Taylor & Francis Ltd The Study of European Ethnology in Austria
Book SynopsisThe study of ethnology or 'Volkskunde' in Austria has had a troubled past. Through most of the 20th century it was under the influence of the so-called Viennese 'Mythological School' and the controversy between the two opposing branches, the 'Ritualist' and the 'Mythologists'', set much of the agenda from the 1920s until long after the World War ended in 1945. The volume examines two Austrian characters, Richard Wolfram and Karl Haiding, and the impact of their research and sets them in the context of Austrian ethnology before, during and after the war years. The book concludes by examining the present day ethnological outlook in the country.Trade Review'Based largely on recently opened archives, interviews, and intense new research, Dow and Bockhorn offer an intriguing account of the development of Austrian folkloristics and related fields of great interest to students of the history of humanistic disciplines and of intellectual history generally...Dow and Bockhorn have provided here rich and complex basic materials for a variety of future researchers.' Professor Joseph Harris, Harvard University, USA 'This very thorough study, solidly based on archival as well as published sources, is an outstanding contribution both to folkloristics and the history of the scholarly social sciences in the German-speaking countries. The authors are to be thanked for providing us with another in the series of books which greatly revise and extend the history of the topic...' Dr Stephen D. Corrsin, Wayne State University, USA 'No doubt, this study of the history of Austrian Volkskunde will, by its nature, appeal to expert folklorists...Highly informative and eminently readable, the volume is an important contribution to the understanding of 20th century Austria.' Taylor & Francis Ltd Taking Space Seriously Law Space and Society in
Book SynopsisThis perceptive study investigates the different ways in which the state deals with various social groups through the mechanisms of space. By means of case studies involving three social groups within Israel''s multicultural society - the Sephardim, the Bedouin-Arab minority and the ultra-Orthodox community of Jerusalem - the different roles played by political space in legal analysis are revealed and analyzed. Issachar Rosen-Zvi then unearths the unifying logic underlying the disparate legal treatment of political space, brought to light by the case studies. The law treats political space differently depending on the social group involved, an attitude that, the author argues, can be traced back to early Zionist thinking. He concludes that a reform of local government law is required, to correct the segregated system of political space and the separate and unequal distribution of political power and economic resources that accompany it.Trade Review'This is an insightful and original study of the way in which politics, culture, and tradition, have molded the legal and political definitions of space within Israeli society. It's techniques and methods are rich in implications, that go far beyond the confines of the case-studies which form the body of the book. The book will be of great value to scholars who are interested in the politics of Israel, and also to those who are concerned more generally with the relationship between a legal system and the society in which it is located.' Professor Lawrence M. Friedman, Stanford University, Stanford California, USA 'This is a subtle, thoughtful and original treatment of how Israeli law has dealt with social group conflicts and hierarchies in the context of land use and political jurisdiction - an impressive study in the new interdisciplinary field of law and geography.' Professor Thomas C. Grey, Stanford Law School, USA '...highly original, penetrating and stimulating analysis of Israeli experience.' The Law and Politics Book Review '...illustrates how the space concept is used by different social groups to increase or consolidate their political and economic power.' International Journal of Environment and PollutionTable of ContentsContents: Introduction; Invisible spaces: the case of the Arab-Jews; The re-emergence of space: the case of the Bedouin; Spaces of ambivalence: the case of the ultra-orthodox; Spaces of identity: Zionist ideology and the social production of political space; Toward a reform of local government law; Epilogue; Bibliography; Index.

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Empty Church Revisited Explorations in
Book SynopsisWhen did churches start to appear more empty than full - and why? The very physicality of largely empty churches and chapels in Britain plays a powerful role in popular perceptions of ''religion''. Empty churches are frequently cited in the media as evidence of large scale religious decline. The ''Empty'' Church Revisited presents a systematic account of British churchgoing patterns over the last two hundred years, uncovering the factors and the statistics behind the considerable process of decline in church attendence. Dispelling as myth the commonly held views that the process of secularization in British culture has led to the decline in churchgoing and resulted in the predominantly empty churches of today, Gill points to physical factors, economics and issues of social space to shed new light on the origins of empty churches. This thoroughly updated edition of Robin Gill''s earlier work, The Myth of the Empty Church, presents new data throughout to explore afresh the paradox oTrade Review'This is a necessary text and classic intervention in debates over secularisation, forcing us to revise many assumptions, as well as showing the importance of the economics of over-provision.' David Martin, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, London School of Economics 'This is the second edition of The Myth of the Empty Church, a seminal work from 1993 and long out of print. While unchanged in structure, it is no mere reprint, incorporating additional research by Gill and taking account of recent contributions to the secondary literature... this remains an impressive piece of empirically grounded scholarship, which has rightly established itself as a modern classic of English religion.' Theology 'This is a fascinating work richly littered with questions for the historical researcher... But it will also prove thought-provoking for contemporary Church leaders...' Modern Believing Reviews of the first edition - 'Myth of the Empty Church': 'Robin Gill is among the handful of theologians who are truly adept in the generation and use of social science data. Gill is the best in his cadre.' The Journal of Religion 'Professor Gill's new study of churchgoing statistics and patterns ought to be on the reading list of every theological college and studied by all those who want to arrest the pattern of decline. Raising clergy morale would contribute greatly to improving the situation. Gill's research and lucid exposition of its results have done a service to all. It ought to be the starting point for any future proposals made by the mainstream churches for church growth in the years to come.' The Church of England Newspaper 'Robin Gill argues...that there are too few Christians in Britain partly because there are far too many churches. Professor Gill argues that the ideological forces of secularisation and commercialism which are conventionally supposed to explain the decline of religious observance in England, are much greater in North America. (His) remedies involve a professionalisation of the Church of England's response.' The Independent 'This is a most striking study. Dr Gill has managed to dig up an impressive array of statistics about church attendances at different points during the period.' The Expository Times 'Gill has identified an important cause of church decline, and the book is a valuable contribution to a growing historical debate.' History 'Gill's argument is composed of a number of intricately interwoven threads, one being that decline in church attendance was, in a significant number of instances, preceded by empty churches.....Gill's final chapter offers a number of suggestions as to how the analysis that he has presented points to ways in which the Church of England might try to get round the structural and economic mess in which it currently finds itself.' The Times Education Supplement 'The data that are presented repay careful attention and we must be grateful for the energy and persistence whihc have been shown. The author wishes his conclusions to be absorbed by the churches today, since he is clear that there is nothing inevitable about the continuing decline in church attendance. This stimulating and challengingly polemical book is addressing a variety of audiences.' Journal of Ecclesiastical History 'This book promises the biggest shake up in our understanding of why churches are empty for thirty years. It is a book which will demand our attention, whether we like it or not.' It will also be of interest to those concerned with the theology or anthropology of death... this is a very good book on an important subject.' Reference Reviews 'It is to the credit of the editors that they have brought together under a single title such a diverse collection of essays, explanations and obituaries. The book represents a fine collection of writings from all around the world that will be of interest to anybody concerned with cremation.' Pharos International '... a well-conceived and well-produced volume that will be helpful in the contemporary debate regarding the morality of the practice of cremation.
