Peeters Publishers Il Senodos Etiopico. Canoni Pseudoapostolici:
Book SynopsisThe Senodos is one of the largest works in the Ethiopic literature. Probably translated in different times from more Arabic "Vorlagen" and partially arranged according to the Pseudo-apostolic literary gender, it is one of the big canon law collections of the Christian Oriental Churches. In Ethiopia it was the main source of Canon Law and the most authoritative work in ecclesiastical matter since the end of the XIII up to the middle of the XVII century. The Senodos strongly affected the religious history of the early Solomonic Ethiopia and played a particular role in the birth of new religious trends in the crucial centuries from its first appearing (XIII century) up to king Zar'a Ya'qob's age (1434-1468). The present book presents the first critical edition of ten of the eleven texts of the Pseudo-apostolic section of the work (about 90 % of the text is inedited). The critical edition is based on a total average of more than 30 mss. and tries to restore the oldest text and to provide rich evidence of its history. The translation is furnished with references to quotations of the Senodos in other Ethiopic works as well as comparison with the Arabic text.

Book SynopsisThe Syriac version of the Hexaemeron by St. Basil of Caesarea survives in Ms no. 9 of the Syriac collection in the Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai (written before 734 AD), and in fragments, of which the earliest dates from the fifthe century. It predates the surviving Greek manuscripts by four centuries. It is not a literal translation, but expands the text in a discursive manner - as is not uncommon in Syriac. The Armenian version was made from this Syriac text by the seventh century. The Syriac version of the Hexaemeron is thus valuable as a witness to the original, as a text of importance for Syriac literature, and as the intermediary for the wide diffusion of the Hexaemeron in Armenia.

Book SynopsisBorn in Qatar in the early seventh century AD, Isaac of Niniveh (also known as Isaac the Syrian) was the author of a number of very fine writings on the spiritual life which have proved very influential, especially in monastic circles, over the centuries. The first part of his writings was translated into Greek in the ninth century at the monastery of St Saba in Palestine, and thence it found its way into many other languages (including in the twentieth century, Japanese). In 1983 a complete manuscript of the second part, hitherto only partially known, was discovered in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and chapters IV-XLI of these new texts are edited and translated here for the first time. The remaining chapters I-III, which include four sets of Kephalaia on spiritual knowledge, will be published subsequently in CSCO by P. Bettiolo.

Peeters Publishers Deontology and Teleology: An Investigation of the
Book SynopsisThe consideration of normative ethics and methodology is a relatively recent phenomena in Catholic moral theology. Similar to any nascent discussion, having adopted terms and concepts from one conceptual genre, Britisch-analytic philosophy, into a radically other genre, Catholic moral theology, one then needs to begin the work of clarifying how, and to what extent, those terms and concepts contribute to the overall project of moral theology as a science. As Pope John Paul II's encyclical Veritatis Splendor attests, this incorporation has met with a great deal of resistance based on misunderstandings of the nature and purpose of normative ethics and methodology. Deontology and Teleology is a pioneer account which exposes and clarifies many of the terminological and conceptual ambiguities inherent to this discussion. It begins with an investigation of C.D. Broad's meta-ethical division of theories into deontology and teleology, and the epistemological/ontological foundations on which he established this division. An analysis of how and why Broad's theory has been incorporated into Catholic discussions on the foundation and formulation of norms along with the inherent difficulties of such an incorporation is then taken up. Finally, this study argues and substantiates through detailed historical analysis that a fundamental difference between traditionalists and revisionists in their relative perspectives on norms rest in the traditional understanding and moral evaluation of the human act, specifically, the objectum, circumstantiae and finis (fontes moralitates). This is an indispensable resource work for those interested in fundamental moral theology and lays the foundation for pursuing further the complex question of normative ethics in Catholic moral theology.

Peeters Publishers A Healthy Rivalry. Human Rights in the Church
Book SynopsisHuman rights in the Church...The combination, human rights and the Church, is not always an easy one, although church authorities increasingly promote human rights and their meticulous application in civil society. This book aims to describe human rights in the Church as they already exist today (in the 1983 Code of Cann Law, in everyday practice) and as they can be developed in the future. Human rights in the Church could be promoted by the development of a health legal culture and by simulating independent responsibility among the Christian faithful. By using existing canon law as creatively as possible and by promoting reasonable changes with an eye to the future, the quality of internal church life can be improved without endangering theological foundations. Indeed, good legal structures are a matter of justice. Finally, this book is a plea for constructive dialogue in the Church. The faithful and the hierarchy are not enemies. They share a common source of inspiraton which is not vitiated by their choice of rival philosophical or pastoral options. Indeed, a healthy rivalry between committed Christians can be a real gain for the life of the Church. Rik Torfs, Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law K.U.Leuven, Lic. Iur., Not., J.C.L., J.C.D. (Leuven). Before joining the faculty of Canon Law, he taught at the University of Utrecht (K.T.U.). He also teaches at Antwerp University (U.I.A.). He is a member of the Executive Committee of the European Consortium for Church and State Research (Milan) and editor of the "European Journal for Church and State". His research and publications are in the field of general norms of Canon Law, Catholic hospitals and schools, marriage law and the realtions between Church and State.

Book SynopsisElija, east-Syrian (nestorian) bishop of al-Anbar west of Baghdad flourished in the first half of the Xth century. His voluminous Ktaba d-Durrasa (Book of Instruction) is composed of metrical stanzas and consists of thirty centuries (therefore known as Ktaba d-Ma'wata), arranged in ten Memre. It is a work of didactic poetry, deeply influenced by Dionysius the Areopagite and his theory of symbolism. We meet a manual of theoria based on Scripture, nature and tradition addressed to monks (and clergy?) and reflecting their hierarchical order of illumination. Of special interest are the large portions with mainly typological explanations of the AT and the NT. From 19 manuscripts of western and eastern libraries a solid text (the common archetype of ca. the 12th/13th century) is established. The second part (Memre IV-VI) is in preparation.

Book SynopsisThe Ethiopian monastic movement imspired by the Tigraean monk Ewostatewos of Dabra Sarabi (1273-1352) introduced the need for a religious reform in the northern provinces of Hamasen and Sara'e (modern Erythrea). Over approximately a century's time, Ewostatewos' preaching and rule spreaded to the whole country and finally was accepted by the king and the metropolites (1450), despite the controversy on observing the Sabbath, a practice which is still alive today in the Ethiopian Church. About 1338, Ewostatewos was forced to leave the country and to deliver his community to his senior disciple Absadi, who led it until he died (1381). Absadi was born in the first half of the XIVth century and about 1374 he founded one of the most important monasteries of northern Ethiopia, Dabra Maryam, in the Qwahayn district of the Sara'e region. The Life of Absadi is edited for the first time together with the long colophon of a Gospel belonging to Dabra Maryam, written in 1408/9 by a monk called Yostinos. Being the oldest hagiographical work coming from the Ewostatewosite milieu and one of the most ancient of the whole Ehtiopian literature, the Gadla Absadi gives new interesting data on a still little known phase of the religious history of Ethiopia, between the reign of Amda Seyon (1314-1344) and Dawit (1379/80-1413).

Book SynopsisPapers presented at the Twelfth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 1995 (see also Studia Patristica 30, 31, 32 and 33). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Book SynopsisPapers presented at the Twelfth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 1995 (see also Studia Patristica 29, 30, 31 and 32). The Twelfth International Conference on Patristic Studies met in Oxford from 21 to 26 August 1995. These gatherings have assembled at four-yearly intervals since 1951. At each the number of papers presented has been greater than the previous occasion, and the size of the assembly is now limited only by the capacity of the buildings available. Some 650 scholars attended the 1995 Conference, including delegates from Russia, Georgia, India, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, as well as from North America and most countries in Europe. Papers were given in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish, and are normally printed in the language in which they were delivered. Some were fully developed lectures lasting for nearly an hour; the majority were communications of 12 minutes' duration: and a few came in between. These volumes contain 284 of the papers, including most of the lectures given in full session, viz. the Inaugural Address by Dr. H.D. Saffrey on 'Theology as a Science'; Prof. Dr. Suso Frank, 'John Cassian on John Cassian'; Prof. Dr. O. Skarsaune; 'Is Christianity Monotheistic ? Patristic Perspectives on a Jewish-Christian Debate'; and Prof. A. Louth, 'St. Maximus the Confessor: Between East and West'. Others report the finding of unpublished texts, deal with particular points, or present broad interpretations, sometimes original in character. For the first time a number of illustrations are included, reflecting the growing interest in iconography.

Book SynopsisThe main part of this work is a detailed inventory of interpretations of Gen. 4.1-17. The exegesis related to each verse is presented quoting sources century by century, first Greek, then Syriac texts. The book introduces early Jewish, Christian and Gnostic exegesis, and on the basis of the inventory, it studies selected themes in the two genres: commentaries and homilies; Greek as opposed to Syriac exegesis, the use of speeches, especially fictive speeches in the dramatized homilies, main themes related to the character of Cain, and the interrelationship of sources. The book will be of interest for students of theology, history of religion, as well as for anyone studying the history of exegesis, art and literature.

Peeters Publishers Deuteronomy and Deuteronomic Literature:
Book SynopsisThe volume is presented to Professor C.H.W. Brekelmans in celebration of his 75th birthday. The editors were of the opinion that there could be no better way to honour Chris Brekelmans than with a collection of articles treating the "Deuteronomic" traditions found in the Book of Deuteronomy as well as in the so-called Tertrateuch, and Deuteronomistic History. In the past years, a renewed impetus has been given to the development of Deuteronomic Studies. The present Festschrift aims at contributing to the current debate which has a special interest in methodological questions regarding the identification and characterization of "Deuteronomistic" texts in the aforementioned complexes of Old Testament writings. The volume is divided into four sections. The first section offers a collection of articles which focus on the Book of Deuteronomy itself. The second section contains contributions dealing with Deuteronomic History. The third section is devoted to the relationship between the Deuteronomic - in the largest sense of the word - traditions and the Tetrateuch. The fourth and final section presents a collection of articles on a number of important issues, each of which offers its own direct or indirect contribution to the study of the Deuteronomi(sti)c literature and its relationship to the remaining texts of the Old Testament.

Peeters Publishers J.W. Wenham - Inleiding Tot Het Grieks Van Het

Peeters Publishers Symbols of Transcendence: Religious Expression in
Book SynopsisThe dynamic of religious expression employs symbolic language, actions, and art. These symbols are symbols of transcendence because it is transcendence which is the unique referent that sets apart symbols which give rise to religious understanding from symbols which do not. The main objective of this book is to demonstrate that in Louis Dupre's work all religious expression, insofar as it has a transcendent reference, is intrinsically symbolic. Religious language is never purely objective nor purely subjective, but a dialectical relation with a transcendent dimension. True to the teachings of Dupre, this book uncovers that without a transcendent referent, religious symbols lose their religious significance. This is the plight of the (late-post)modern condition which resulted from the fracturing of nature into its cosmic, human and transcendent components. To regain a sense of transcendence the believer is forced to make an inward turn akin to the mystical practice of past ages. This does not recover a sense of transcendence for culture but can do so for the believer's personal spiritual life.

Peeters Publishers Irenaeus' Use of Matthew's Gospel in Adversus
Book SynopsisThis book shows how Irenaeus creatively selects and develops distinctive Matthean material, within his interpretive networks of other biblical texts in order to verbally and conceptually oppose the theses of the heretics and provide helpful language for his expression of the church's faith. He is attracted to this Matthean material not because it holds an extraordinary place in the canon, but because in his view each gospel makes a distinctive, but equal contribution to the church's canon and polemic. Irenaeus sees some of Matthew's distinctive contributions in terms of language which emphasizes Christ's humanity and virgin birth, explains the theological and economical unity of the two covenants, and opposes the heretics' cosmological, anthropological, Christological, theological, and economical dualism. Although the bishop works within the framework of the church's tradition, the interpretive inter-textual networks he builds, his magnification of particular terms, and his polemic against dualism demonstrate his creative, anti-heretic innovation. Rarely, does he ever merely repeat the thought of a predecessor. Irenaeus exegetes Matthew for the church within a particular milieu, using a methodology of inter-textual connection common to his milieu, and developing theological language which counters the heretics of his milieu.

The International Q Project's presentation of the critical text of Q 12:8-12, together with the exhaustive history of research on which it is based, will considerably enhance research in the Sayings Gospel Q, the historical Jesus, and New Testament christology. The databases and evaluations are an expanded and revised version of those presented and discussed at the meetings of the International Q Project in New Orleans 1990 (Q 12:10), San Francisco 1992 (Matt 10:23), Washington 1993 (Q 12:8-9), and Rattenbach/Niederbayern 1994 (Q 12:11-12). Book SynopsisWhile the history of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) has been a very popular theme among researchers in Italy and other countries, it first became the subject of scholarly research in Russia at the conference held in Moscow in 1995: "Vatican Council II: The View from Russia". The opportunity to undertake research in the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Council for Religious Affairs, and other departments made it possible to present a number of papers and communications which disclosed the attitude of the Soviet leadership towards the Council, discussions about the Council in the upper echelons of the Russian Orthodox Church, ...The holding of the conference was of great scholarly importance for Russian historians. First, it was an important part in the realization of a research programme on the history of world religions. Second, the vast historical problem of "Religion, Church and Power" was raised at the conference. Third, this topic is one of the elements of general research being undertaken on the history of the Soviet state and society as a whole. Fourth, the conference and the problems it raised undoubtedly have contemporary significance. Today, when problems of relations between Orthodoxy and Catholicism, the Russian Orthodox Church and the Vatican are provoking interest and raising disputes and discussions, addressing the comparatively recent history of these relations may be useful in providing evidence of historical experiences and precedents.
