Book SynopsisMit seinem Commentarius in Apocalypsin hat Oecumenius (Ende des 6. Jh.s) als erster in der griechischen Literatur das Buch der Offenbarung mit einer vollstandigen, koharenten Exegese versehen. Seine Arbeit, die den zwei anderen grossen byzantinischen Apokalypse-Exegeten Andreas und Arethas von Caesarea bekannt war, und wodurch sie sogar inspiriert wurden, erklart systematisch und in lauter allegorischer Weise das ganze Bibelbuch, versucht dessen logisch-temporalen Zusammenhang nachzuweisen, und betont in einer Zeit, wo der Streit uber die Kanonizitat noch nicht geschlichtet war, wie harmonisch es an die ubrigen Schriften, insbesondere die johanneischen, anschliesst. H.C. Hoskier hat das Verdienst, dass er fur die editio princeps dieses Kommentars gesorgt hat. Seine Ausgabe wurde aber wegen einer Anzahl von Mangeln nicht rein positiv empfangen, und vor allem die schmale handschriftliche Grundlage, auf der sich seine Edition stutzte loste Kritik aus. In der neuen Ausgabe von M. De Groote wird allen Punkten der geausserten Kritik grundlich Rechnung getragen. Im Vorwort zeigt der Autor ausfuhrlich wie die fruhere Edition emendiert werden konnte, bespricht dann die handschriftliche Uberlieferung, die aus neun Haupthandschriften und einer ganzen Reihe skundarer Zeugen besteht, baut das stemma codicum auf und erlautert die ratio edendi. Der Kommentartext, ursprunglich in zwolf Kapitel eingeteilt, aber aus praktischen Erwagungen und auf Grund des Inhalts mit einer weiteren Unterteilung in Paragraphen versehen, wird mit einem ausfuhrlichen Apparat prasentiert. Als supplementum folgt die Ausgabe der Scholien, d.h. kurzer Auszuge aus dem Kommentar, die in anderen als den eigentlichen Oecumenius-Handschriften uberliefert worden sind. Die Edition schliesst mit einem index biblicus, einem index fontium et locorum conferendorum, und einem index locorum parallelorum in Andreae et Arethae commentariis.

Book SynopsisBesides their insistence on praxis and the application of the Word of God to a given situation, Liberation Theologies make ample use of tools of analysis to uncover root causes of oppression. Now, it is precisely with respect to these tools that Liberation Theologies today find themselves on shifting grounds. In intra-ecclesiastical circles cultural concerns have come to replace socio-economic analysis, whereas after the implosion of the East Bloc the liberationists proper also pay more attention to the issues of gender, ecology, and indigenous movements. The contributions to this volume, originating from various continents, discuss to what extent this shift in emphasis is desirable, and acceptable, and conclude that the cultural focus cannot possibly invalidate but only enrich and complete the socio-economic analysis. They, moreover, try to assess the developments in light of globalization (economics, informatics), on the one hand, and postmodernity on the other. Given the impact of western culture politics, the question arises as to whether the native cultures will succeed in keeping up their religious core values and structures of solidarity - two elements so indispensable for liberative commitments.
