  • Paganism in Christian Holidays

New Falcon Publications Paganism in Christian Holidays

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe word Pagan came from the Latin word paganus, which means country-dweller. These rural people often incorporated nature in their belief systems and were polytheistic (believing in more than one God). They differed from most religions in its non-hierarchal (with no paid clergy) and were more equally led by women. Pagans celebrate seasonal festivals and ceremonies. Christians used the term Pagan interchangeably with heathen, as a put down because many country people were not rich or highly educated. In Paganism In Christian Holidays, Wheeler presents evidence that modern Christian beliefs, practices and symbolism borrowed heavily not only from Pagan beliefs, but also from Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Aztec, Hinduism, Buddhism and other ideologies. Do these concepts sound familiar? Blood sacrifice, a triune god, a man-god who had to be sacrificed for society's salvation. Persians believed in Mithra, a great mediator between God and man. He was born on December 25th by a virgin, he died for humanity and was resurrected after being buried. Mithra's holidays were the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox (Christmas and Easter). Years of adversity and oppression pushed the practice of Paganism and other nature-loving belief systems underground. This is a pattern among many indigenous people who were conquered by Christians and were stripped of their right to continue their own religion on penalty of death. Many refused to convert and were killed. And yet customs and symbology from nature-oriented religions can be found throughout Christian beliefs. Many Pagans worshiped in secret to avoid persecution, many including Aleister Crowley worked hard to develop Paganism as a religion and more than a magical movement.

  • The Bible Made Impossible – Why Biblicism Is Not

Baker Publishing Group The Bible Made Impossible – Why Biblicism Is Not

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBiblicism, an approach to the Bible common among some American evangelicals, emphasizes together the Bible's exclusive authority, infallibility, clarity, self-sufficiency, internal consistency, self-evident meaning, and universal applicability. Acclaimed sociologist Christian Smith argues that this approach is misguided and unable to live up to its own claims. If evangelical biblicism worked as its proponents say it should, there would not be the vast variety of interpretive differences that biblicists themselves reach when they actually read and interpret the Bible. Far from challenging the inspiration and authority of Scripture, Smith critiques a particular rendering of it, encouraging evangelicals to seek a more responsible, coherent, and defensible approach to biblical authority. This important book has generated lively discussion and debate. The paperback edition adds a new chapter responding to the conversation that the cloth edition has sparked.Table of ContentsIntroductionPart 1: The Impossibility of Biblicism1. Biblicism and the Problem of Pervasive Interpretive Pluralism2. The Extent and Source of Pervasive Interpretive Pluralism3. Some Relevant History, Sociology, and Psychology4. Book SynopsisThe first comprehensive overview of the life and writings of the Third Karmapa Rangjung Dorje, a revolutionary figure in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.Known for his mastery of teachings across sectarian lines, his treatises on medicine and astrology, and his work as spiritual advisor to the last Yuan emperor of China, Rangjung Dorje (1284-1339) is considered one of the most important and influential figures in Tibetan Buddhist history. First recognized as a tulku, or reincarnated Buddhist master, at the age of five, Rangjung Dorje became the Karma Kagyu lineage holder and instituted the reincarnation-based inheritance structure within Tibetan Buddhism that led to the formation of important lineages of tulkus such as the Dalai Lamas. In this groundbreaking work, Ruth Gamble synthesizes her extensive research on Rangjung Dorje into a sweeping biography covering his life, legacy, and important selected writings. Included in her discussions are Rangjung Dorje''s synthesis of Dzogchen and Mahamudra in his writings, his devotion to spreading the teachings of Buddha nature, and several works never before translated into English. Book SynopsisA compilation of teachings and practices of the Shangpa Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism by one of Tibet''s greatest Buddhist masters. The Treasury of Precious Instructions by Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Taye, one of Tibet''s greatest Buddhist masters, is a shining jewel of Tibetan literature, presenting essential teachings from the entire spectrum of practice lineages that existed in Tibet. Volumes in this series may be engaged as practice manuals while also preserving ancient teachings significant to the literature and history of world religions.  Volume 11 of the series, Shangpa Kagyu, is the first of two volumes that present teachings and practices from the Shangpa Kagyu practice lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. This tradition derives from the female celestial beings, or ḍākinīs, Niguma and Sukhasiddhi and their disciple, the eleventh-century Tibetan yogi Khyungpo Naljor Tsultrim Gönpo of the Shang region of Tibet. The scriptural source material for this practice tradition is twofold: the yogic teachings of the Six Dharmas of Niguma and the nature of mind instructions from the cycle of teachings Amulet Box Mahamudra.  The tantric basis of the Shangpa Kagyu tradition is the five principal deities of the new translation (sarma) traditions and in particular the Five-Deity Cakrasamvara practice. The six parts of this sizable volume include source scriptures, liturgies, supplications, empowerment texts, instructions, and practice manuals composed by Niguma, Virūpa, Tāranātha, the compiler Jamgön Kongtrul, and others.

Book SynopsisA collection of liturgical and instructional practice texts on the Eight Ancillary Path Cycles of the Sakya lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, compiled by one of Tibet''s greatest Buddhist masters. In its eighteen volumes, Kongtrul brings together some of the most important texts on key topics of Buddhist thought and practice as well as authoring significant new sections of his own. Volumes in this series may be engaged as practice manuals while also preserving ancient teachings significant to the literature and history of world religions. Volume 6 of the series, Sakya: The Path with Its Result, Part Two, presents a selection of teachings and practices from the Eight Ancillary Path Cycles of the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The Sakya lineage derives from Virūpa, Dombi Heruka, and other Indian masters, or mahāsiddhas, and passes through Gayadhara and his Tibetan disciple Drokmi Lotsāwa Śākya Yeshe (992–1072).  The practice tradition centers around the teaching and transmission of the Hevajra Tantra and its subsidiary texts. This second volume of Sakya texts contains oral instructions transmitted to Drokmi Lotsāwa by the early eleventh-century Indian masters, Ācārya Vīravajra, Mahāsiddha Amoghavajra, Paṇḍita Prajñāgupta of Oḍḍiyāna, and Paṇḍita Gayadhara. These texts broaden our understanding of how mahāmudrā, the teaching on the nature of mind, is understood and practiced in the Sakya school.

Book SynopsisRelish these direct, experiential meditation instructions from the author of the bestselling Introduction to Tantra.Lama Yeshe tells us that mahamudra is “the universal reality of emptiness, of nonduality” and its unique characteristic is its emphasis on meditation: “With mahamudra meditation there is no doctrine, no theology, no philosophy, no God, no Buddha. Mahamudra is only experience.” He relies on the First Panchen Lama’s well-known Root Text of Genden Mahamudra, which in a few short pages provides the pith instructions for, first, overcoming distraction and resting in meditative stillness on the clarity of one’s own mind, and then, with subtle awareness, penetrating its ultimate nature, its emptiness. As always, Lama Yeshe’s words are direct, funny, and incredibly encouraging. He gets us to go beyond ego’s addiction to a limited sense of self and to taste the lightness and expansiveness of our own true nature.

Book SynopsisAcross Buddhist traditions, the five senses—sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch—are perceived both positively and negatively. Share our eminent scholars’ fascination and deep insight into what makes a sensuous experience good or bad.Following on the exhibition Encountering the Buddha: Art and Practice across Asia at the National Museum of Asian Art, ten eminent scholars present their insights into Buddhism’s fascinating relation with the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch), which careens between delight and disgust, rarely finding a middle way. While much of Buddhist literature is devoted to overcoming the attachment that dooms us to rebirth in samsara, primarily by deprecating sense experience and showing that whatever brings us sensual pleasure leads only to physical and mental pain, in texts such as the Lotus Sutra, sensory powers do not offer sensory pleasure but rather knowledge, clear observation, and ability

Book SynopsisA warm-hearted guide to Buddhist practice for those ready to contend with the reality that enlightenment?the realization of non-self?can?t be achieved by the self.A well-known spiritual saying goes, ?Enlightenment is an accident. But we can make ourselves more accident-prone.? As an authentic American Zen takes shape, enlightenment continues to be misunderstood as a project to be completed, a goal to be achieved, or a prize to be awarded. Tim Burkett?s new book unhooks enlightenment from the hot air balloon of ego and brings it back down to earth.Drawing on stories of his first teacher, the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki (author of Zen Mind, Beginner?s Mind), and Burkett?s decades of practice and teaching, he reveals how to live in the world with a deep joy that comes from embracing the work and play of this very moment. With the wisdom and humor of a seasoned practitioner familiar with all manner of eccentric fixations and silly dead-ends, he offers views and practices we can use to support the paradoxical process of letting enlightenment happen on its own.

Book SynopsisThe Poet's Perfume picks up where Mullaney's last book of poems, 'A Divine Appointment', left off. It is divided into four sections: 1: You & I – Linking Body and Mind 2: You & I & Spirit – Unfolding the Spirit of Man and Humanity 3: You & I & Love – Joining the Soul with Spirit through Love (Spiritual & Physical) 4: Food for Thought & Thought for Food – Contemplations & Reflections. This book explores the different aspects of love; love of life, love of beauty, love of nature, love for oneself, and a deep attraction one feels for another. The poems also probe topics of a starker nature such as suicide, death, and heartbreak. Ultimately, the impression or takeaway after reading this small book of poetic verse is a feeling of gratitude for that miraculous gift of life.If you sit and spend some time with these poems, their words will find their way into your heart and you might notice that they will also refresh and enliven your own undying spirit.
