New Directions Publishing Corporation Angels Saints With a Guide to the Illustrations
Book SynopsisA gorgeously illustrated co-publication with Christine Burgin by “one of the world’s great essayists” (The New York Times). With a guide to the illustrations by Mary Wellesley.Trade Review"A fanciful, wickedly inventive and poignant conjuration. Weinberger has made an infidel’s Book of Hours in an attempt to reinterpret a world that is more alien and insecure by the day, to imagine some things beyond the reach of search engines." -- Marina Warner - London Review of Books"Eliot Weinberger’s Angels and Saints is glorious— a deeply scholarly and playful work, in which the mind of an essayist meets the sensibility of a poet. It is as lovely an object as its subject might require, illustrated by the grid poems of Hrabanus Maurus (circa 780–856), with an additional note on their complexities by Mary Wellesley." -- Anne Enright - NYRB"Weinberger delivers a meditation on the nature of angels and saints, illustrated with gorgeous reproductions of the works of ninth century German Benedictine monk Hrabanus Maurus. An interpretation of angels concludes with a beautifully laid out 'angelology,' naming various angels and their powers, such as Mach, who can make one invisible. The rest of the volume is devoted to the stories of saints—some of which are quite lengthy, such as the biography of Saint Therese. Others are as brief as a sentence. (For John the Almsgiver, 'He never spoke an idle word.') Academic and lay readers interested in Christian thought will enjoy Weinberger’s eclectic homage to angels and saints." -- Publishers Weekly (starred)"Like Thomas Aquinas before him, Weinberger is a brilliant scholar in a dark age." -- Rain Taxi"My favorite essayist is Eliot Weinberger. His remarkable breadth of calm concern is impressive." -- Gary Snyder - The New York Times"In Angels & Saints, the beauty of Weinberger’s prose is itself given a visual counterpoint in the multi-colored grid poems of ninth-century Benedictine monk Rabanus Maurus. Each of his sentences thrums with its own vitality. Each subject feels like it’s been granted a second life in text." -- Scott Beauchamp - Washington Examiner"Eliot Weinberger is a master essayist, a furious thinker and an exceptionally elegant writer." -- Jenny Diski

The University Press of Kentucky The Holy Profane Religion in Black Popular Music
Book SynopsisExplores the strong presence of religion in the secular music of 20th-century African Americans. Analyzing lyrics and the historical contexts that shaped them, Teresa L. Reed examines the link between West-African musical and religious culture and the way African Americans convey religious sentiment in styles ranging from blues to gangsta rap.Trade ReviewWell told and full of strong anecdotes, Reed's book is a fine example of how the study of popular culture can be informed by the study of religion. - Publishers Weekly; ""Her treatment is, of necessity, multi-disciplinary, providing data and challenging ideas that will attract the attention of individuals well past the fans of pop culture."" - Choice

The Catholic University of America Press Preaching in the Age of Chaucer Selected Sermons
Book SynopsisOffers translations of twenty-five Latin sermons written between 1350 and 1450, which demonstrate how preachers constructed them and shaped them to their own purposes. This book contains a general introduction and short historical notes on the individual selections.Trade ReviewThese sermons are difficult to acquire, often hard to translate, and very hard to teach. Wenzel's collection will go a long way toward enhancing the classroom experience of many teachers and students. Wenzel is a superb translator. The texts are a pleasure to read, written in a light, accessible style that flows beautifully. - Maura Nolan, University of California, Berkeley ""This book is immensely illuminating! Wenzel's mastery of the field is reflected in the bountiful and fruitful ways the selected sermons interrelate, and his translations are beautifully done."" - Theresa Gross-Diaz, Loyola University Chicago

Rutgers University Press Churches and Charity in the Immigrant City
Book SynopsisIn addition to being a religious country--over ninety percent of Americans believe in God--the United States is also home to more immigrants than ever before. Churches and Charity in the Immigrant City focuses on the intersection of religion and civic engagement among Miami''s immigrant and minority groups. The contributors examine the role of religious organizations in developing social relationships and how these relationships affect the broader civic world. Essays, for example, consider the role of leadership in the promotion and creation of 'civic social capital' in a Haitian Catholic church, transnational ties between Cuban Catholics in Miami and Havana, and several African American congregations that serve as key comparisons of civic engagement among minorities. This book is important not only for its theoretical contributions to the sociology of religion, but also because it gives us a unique glimpse into immigrants'' civic and religious lives in urban America.Trade ReviewAny future research on immigrant religion will be guided by the insights in this important book. -- Helen Rose Ebaugh * author of Religion and the New Immigrants: Continuities and Adaptations in Immig *A stunning achievement! The volume offers rich detail and illuminating theory. One of the best books ever written on religion, immigration, and civic life. -- Thomas A. Brigham Young University Press On This Day
Book SynopsisThe Yaysmawurk' is an Armenian liturgical collection of brief saints' lives arranged according to the day on which they were celebrated in the annual church calendar. The first Yaysmawurk' was translated from an existing Greek liturgical collection, the Synaxarion, where the lives are all collected. In fact, it is common knowledge that this Greek collection was the basis for nearly all such liturgical collections of the lives of the saints throughout the early Christian world; however, it was not a mere translation. Rather, it constituted a logical culmination of a long and steady development in the Armenian Church of what scholars today like to call the cult of the saints. This volume in the On This Day series collects the entries for March.
