  • A Beautiful Mess

SPCK - Monarch A Beautiful Mess

Book SynopsisGod's divine order is so much bigger than our plans. You don't build a life or a church, you grow it. A book about expecting more.Trade Review“Christians are holy troublemakers, God's counterculture, people who refuse to accept the world as it is and insist on moving the world towards what it should be. This book is not just about how God can fix your life... it's about how God might mess you up. A Beautiful Mess is a beautiful book, coming from a woman whose life and work I have long admired.” -- Shane Claiborne"In this book, Danielle Strickland proves that she is not just a rather unusual bundle of Jesus-energy on steroids, but a deeply reflective monastic who is adept at finding meaning in the mess we call life." -- Alan Hirsch“This is a challenging and thought-provoking book that highlights how many of us have made an idol out of order and control. In her straight-talking style Danielle dares us to embrace the ups and downs of life, and to let go of our need to be in the driving seat, in order to see new life and growth. As always her words are full of her inspiring and infectious love for Jesus and hunger to see the world changed in his name. If you like things neat and tidy, buy this book and be reminded of the beauty and joy to be found in embracing chaos and giving over control to God.” -- Mike Pilavachi, Soul SurvivorTable of ContentsContentsAcknowledgments 9Introduction 11Chapter1 Inevitable Chaos 132 Order Addicts Anonymous 233 Kicking at Darkness 434 Think Bigger 575 Holding the Landing 716 Seasons 817 Life: Mind-blowing Simplicity 918 Humanity 1019 Rest: In Defiance of Slavery 111Conclusion 119Endnotes 123

  • Dont Beat Yourself Up Learning the Wisdom of

SPCK Publishing Dont Beat Yourself Up Learning the Wisdom of

Book SynopsisAll of us feel guilty when things go wrong. But instead of beating yourself up, take a deep breath, and learn ...Trade Review“Compelling, warm, practical and utterly inspirational.” -- Jeff Lucas“Too often faith becomes the boxing glove we use to beat ourselves up. For those who feel battered, defeated, overwhelmed and diminished this book offers a much needed hand up.” -- Dr Russell Rook“Nice one Tarn. Your honesty and humility are compelling and personally challenging.” -- Rev Carl Beech“Tania is a courageous and transparent warrior of hope-filled truth who, in these pages, takes us past polite conversation into the kind of honest discussion about tough issues that most of us long to have, but few of us actually experience. Every chapter reads like a coffee-fuelled chat with a fantastic friend.” -- Cathy Madavan“Anyone who can get the word `codswallop’ naturally into a book, and recommends that `it is better to eat a Mars Bar with good friends, than to eat broccoli alone’ gets my vote!” -- Bex Lewis“Full of grace and truth, this book will take you to the heart of God.” -- Rob Peabody“Tania’s concept of Kindsight will help you to see your past through the lens of the grace of God. She offers us a great gift.” -- Dr Krish Kandiah"Wow, a book that tells it as it is. If you hunger for reality and honesty, if you value relationships and life as much as I do, you will love this.” -- Vicky Taylor“Inspirational and completely unforgettable - I couldn't put it down.” -- Rachel Gardener“Tania holds the heavy extremes of great strength and great vulnerability without fumbling over or dropping either. Her honesty and hard-won wisdom are life and joy-giving. Long may she bless us by sharing them!” -- Abby Guinness, Event Director, Spring HarvestAnyone who knows Tarn will recognise her style instantly. She writes as she speaks, and her strong and deliberate addressing of taboo subjects so personally will set the reader free of their religious spirit and/or their own personal struggles in these areas. Tarn has such freedom in her own heart and it flows, nay, floods out of the book. It’s time such a book was written by someone with the respect and value she has in the Christian world. Leave it to Tarn to not just break through the barriers, but blow’m sky high. Her coining of the word `kindsight’ is nothing short of beautiful and the determination with which she practices what she preaches is a testimony to the power of the God she serves. Her love for people, friends, total strangers, and her two beautiful boys gives courage to those of us who look on as she journeys through life. If I could describe this book as just one thing, it would be HONEST. It is radically, freeingly, empoweringly, encouragingly, over the top honest and no reader can sit with it without being changed for the good, without wanting to know God more courageously and more deeply. This is a woman who knows the heart of God in a most beautiful way. I’m going to buy a dozen copies and give them away ... captives can turn into mighty warriors; Tarn is living proof. -- Bev Murrill, Director, Christian Growth International“Well done for picking up this volume! This is an intensely practical, down-to-earth, life-researched book, which has been forged in some of the deepest and darkest experiences of life; Tania has been through them all and her dogged faith in the Lord Jesus to not only bring her through, but also to make something profoundly precious out of them, is the basis of the wisdom you will unearth as you read these chapters. I have had the privilege of seeing how Tania has tackled some of the things life has thrown at her and I have grown in profound admiration for her; she is a shining star and proof that what she writes about works. As you read this book you too will learn how to be kind to yourself as you work with the Holy Spirit to bring healing, wholeness and strength to your life.” -- Anne Coles, New WineTable of ContentsContentsAcknowledgments 9Foreword 11Introduction 131 On Missing the Point of Church 192 On Families that Implode 353 On Shame and All Its Secrets 534 On Coping Strategies that Hurt and Forgiveness that Heals 695 On Falling in Love: The Pain of Again and Again 916 On Sex: The Good, the Bad and the Average 1117 On Porn and Masturbation 1358 On Finally, Choosing Comrades Well 1539 On the Incomprehensible: Stories of Injustice 17510 On Learning to Live through Crushing Loss 197Useful contacts and resources 215Text credits 223

  • Interpreting Dreams and Visions

SPCK - Monarch Interpreting Dreams and Visions

Book SynopsisHow to understand what God is saying to you. A resource for interpretation, with exercises.Trade Review"A dynamic and fresh approach to a spiritual resource long neglected." - Rev Dr Russ Parker"Quoting the prophet Joel on the day of Pentecost, the apostle Peter underlined that dreams and visions were to be one of the primary ways in which God would communicate the revelation of His heart to His people under the New Covenant. Nevertheless, the interpretation of dreams and visions has often been marginalized and overlooked or even rejected in the Church; either because it was misunderstood, or simply because the necessary tools were missing. In this incredibly practical and down to earth book, Liz Evans combines her years of personal experience, with proven biblical wisdom and fascinating practical examples and exercises, to provide the reader with a comprehensive handbook that will serve many seeking to grow in their understanding of how, when and to whom God speaks through dreams and visions. I commend it wholeheartedly!" - Wes Hall, Principal, Revival Training Center of Stuttgart, Germany"Having worked with Liz on a number of occasions and welcomed her to teach dream interpretation at our church, I am delighted that she has now made her work available through this book. Liz's ministry is solidly bible based, highly inspirational and easily accessible to everyone. Above all her passion for Jesus, love for people and integrity for truth, combined with amazing spiritual sensitivity, makes her prophetic ministry unique and trustworthy. This book is an essential tool for anyone serious about interpreting dreams and taking this ministry into the market place. The potential is both transformational and limitless." - Revd Clive W. • The Axe and the Tree

SPCK Publishing The Axe and the Tree

Book SynopsisThe slaughter of thirteen innocent people at a Mission school in Zimbabwe shocked the world.Trade Review"I could not put the book down nor could I read it without tears in my eyes. The strength of the story that Steve tells is that he is also part of it, he knew the people he writes about and he brings each character to life as if they were alive today. I am indebted to his diligence in unearthing history and telling it accurately. This book will never be old." -- Paul Hudson, Elim International Missions Director"Your book moved us to tears. It is so well written, so well researched, and does not flinch from the hard political and theological questions raised by the massacre. A significant contribution to the history of Christian mission." -- David and Rosemary Harley, OMF“This book is a moving account of triumphant faith in endeavour and suffering for the cause of Christ and his kingdom. It is thoroughly researched and impressively written by a first hand observer of events which drew the attention of the world to the work of Christian missions.” -- Prof Don Evans, Bioethicist, University of Otago, New Zealand"This story of a Christian community, vividly brought to life through the memories of a missionary family, offers a compelling example of forgiveness and redemption in the face of one of the darkest moments of Zimbabwe’s recent past. Through it we come to understand the deep roots of the Zimbabwean Church.” -- David Maxwell, Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History, Emmanuel College, Cambridge“Tragedy, triumph, tenacity; grace and faith; suffering beyond words, with love for the Lord, his gospel and his people: this book has them all. A biography like this is never simply a joyful romp through a happy life, and you stare into hell as well as into heaven. But the thread of tenacious faith, no matter what, is visible from start to finish, and behind that the reality of God's love and grace that makes such faith a gift from himself. Read – and pray for Zimbabwe.” -- Rose Dowsett, Vice-Chairman of the WEA's Mission Commission"Steve pours heart and mind into the most moving of quests: the mystery of God’s ways in the face of palpable evil and suffering and faith." -- Fiona Barnard Smith, Chaplain, St Andrews University"A book that plumbs the depths of human sin and suffering and scales the heights of God's grace and the power of forgiveness. I wept tears of sadness at the terrible suffering this book describes; tears of joy at the power of forgiveness it conveys." -- Rev. Rupert Standring, Vicar of St Peters Church, Fulham"An exploration of the brutal killing of children and adults in 1970s Zimbabwe - by turns memoir, missionary biography, crime investigation, and political history - this book is unflinching in its record of detail and inspirational in its quest for meaning and redemption." -- Rev. Dr. Warren Beattie, Lecturer in Mission Studies, All Nations Christian College“Wikipedia will give you an horrific picture of some of the victims of the slaughter of Elim missionaries and their children in 1978 in what is now Zimbabwe. Steve Griffiths, with sensitivity, warmth and a great literary style has told this story in the broader context of missionary work and his own parents' ministry there. The book breaths a love of Zimbabwe and its people and shows how through forgiveness God can work to bring something beautiful even out of the ugliness of murder. A book to challenge and encourage.” -- Rev. Ray Porter, Director of World Mission Studies, Oak Hill College“A vivid, heartbreaking, yet ultimately hopeful account of what happens when the horrors of humanity are met with the power of God’s forgiveness. I have not met anyone else with his knowledge and understanding of the Church and people of Asia. He has experienced missionary life first hand, his research is legendary, and he appreciates the challenges of going to the unreached. Paul has been an invaluable friend, partner, and advisor to AsiaLink since our inception. If you meet Paul, you will know that overriding all of this is his God-given desire to see Asia’s billions saved from eternal death.” -- Colin Dudgeon, AsiaLink, United Kingdom“We are grateful to Paul Hattaway and Asia Harvest for providing millions of Bibles to the people of China. We cannot find words to express our thanks for the unselfish giving of those who have provided the Word of Life to us.” -- Brother Chen, senior house church leader, China“I would like to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Paul Hattaway and Asia Harvest for their generous help in providing Bibles to untold thousands of poor Christians throughout India. Multitudes of Indian believers greatly appreciate their love and partnership.” -- Brother Pankaj, ministry leader, India“We are very blessed to have labored for a number of years with Paul Hattaway in providing support to hundreds of faithful and fruitful native missionaries. Paul is one of the great unsung heroes in God’s vineyard. His research into unreached peoples across Asia has impacted the work of many mission agencies, including ours. For a missionary who has worked quietly in the shadows, his ardent advocacy for native missionaries has been highly exemplary. We love and esteem our dear brother.” -- Carl Gordon and Bo Barredo, Co-founders, Advancing Native Missions“Joining hands with Paul Hattaway and Asia Harvest has dynamically increased the speed by which remote unreached people groups throughout the Himalayas are being reached. Through their loving support, Asia Harvest has accelerated the gospel among those who have never heard of Christ at the top of the world.” -- Sarwochcha Himal, The Footstool Project, Nepal“Over the past twelve years we have seen the powerful and lasting impact Paul Hattaway and Asia Harvest have made for Christ Jesus among the Vietnamese people. Paul’s driving passion for being about his Father’s business, combined with his insight and deep understanding of the spiritual needs of our nation, are a great blessing that has resulted in much fruit for the kingdom of God.” -- Joshua and Ruth Nguyen, ministry leaders, Vietnam“Paul Hattaway is a man with a clear focus and passion for the lost. Even after experiencing some health challenges, he has continued to pursue the dream God placed in his heart. This book is the expression of his life calling. I am glad God brought Paul into our lives. Through our partnership, we have planted many churches throughout Indonesia.” -- Paulus Wiratno, Founder, Mercy Indonesia“Paul Hattaway and his co-workers have been a tremendous help to our young church planters among unreached people groups in Cambodia. They have aided our workers as they take the Good News of Jesus Christ to villages that have never heard the gospel even once. We thank you with all our hearts!” -- Joni Wise, Paraclete Ministries, Cambodia“Paul Hattaway and his ministry have been a great source of encouragement in empowering church planters among some of the most unreached people groups in the Philippines. Their partnership has been instrumental in major breakthroughs for the kingdom of God. May the Name of Jesus be praised.” -- Paul Ignacio, HIS1040 Ministries, Philippines“Our primary goal is to reach the unreached with the gospel of Jesus Christ as we shine God’s light to the 150 million people of Bangladesh. Together with Paul and his co-workers we have spread the Good News to the four corners of our country. We deeply appreciate our partnership.” -- Brother Swapon, Ministry leader, Bangladesh“The tens of thousands of Bibles that Paul Hattaway and his team have provided for the people of Myanmar are amazing to us and are of the greatest benefit. We have uncountable blessings because of the Scriptures we have received, as only the Bible can transform our country. We are deeply thankful for the blessing Paul has been to our nation for many years.” -- Brother Joseph, Ministry leader, Myanmar (Burma)“We are humbled by the support of Paul Hattaway and Asia Harvest to our ministry in Sri Lanka. Literally millions of Scriptures have gone out from here all over the Indian subcontinent because of Paul’s vision and heart to extend the kingdom of God.” -- Daniel Kort, New Life Literature, Sri Lanka“I first worked with Paul and Asia Harvest in 1992, delivering Bibles to house churches in China. We have increased our partnership together, as we intensify our commitment to providing God’s Word.” -- Gary Russell, Founder, China Harvest Inc“Paul Hattaway’s zeal and dedication for reaching the unreached has highly motivated us. • The Hum of Angels

Lion Hudson The Hum of Angels

Book SynopsisIlluminating what the Bible says about one of God's most magnificent and misunderstood creations.Trade Review"Books on the angelic in the Bible are usually of varying quality - so fluffy and story-filled they lack a coherent basis in Scripture, or so impenetrably philosophical one can't apply them to the normal Christian life. Scot McKnight's The Hum of Angels carefully avoids all these pitfalls and presents a sound and balanced biblical vision of God's angelic realm and its work. He helpfully reimagines the ministry of angels, while keeping his work rooted in and framed by Scripture. The Hum of Angels is a worthy addition to the library of anyone wanting a solid, insightful, and scriptural view of God's angelic ministers." Jonathan Macy, author of 'In the Shadow of His Wings' and minister in the Church of England."Angels are everywhere! Until I read this book, I must confess that even as a Bible teacher I'd missed how ever-present angels are at key junctures and in critical ways throughout the biblical story. As a pastor, I'd been mostly blind to the angels all around us (which most people in our church body, statistics show, more readily see). This wonderful book opened not only my eyes but my ears to the beautiful hum of angels surrounding us - a harmony that points us to the melody of Jesus at the center." Joshua Ryan Butler, pastor at Imago Dei Community, Portland, Oregon, and author of 'The Skeletons in God's Closet' and The Pursuing God"I make a practice of reading everything Scot McKnight writes because I learn so much from his bright mind and generous spirit. His work exemplifies an intelligent, rich way of understanding the Bible; and this wonderful book is no exception. After having read The Hum of Angels, I'll walk through my day with more awareness of God's loving presence and comfort, and more hope because of it." Shauna Niequist, New York Times best-selling author of Present over Perfect"In The Hum of Angels, Scot McKnight invites us to consider the active and significant role angels play on the pages of Scripture and in fulfilling the purposes of God today - not for the sake of information, but for the sake of hope. How easy it is for us, from our groundlevel perspective, to give discouragement and despair the upper hand. This reminder of the powerful activity of myriads of God's angels on our behalf is one more reason for hope to thrive in the future of God's ultimate victory over evil. Book SynopsisOne of the major debates in English cultural, literary and religious history concerned whether or not the Bible should be translated into English.Trade ReviewThis is an important body of texts that needs to be available in a convenient modern format. These materials are of fundamental significance for the English debate about translation of religious materials into the vernacular in the early fifteenth century. Vincent GillespieFor almost all these texts, Dove represents the first complete, published critical edition; moreover, the edition is exceptionally easy to use, with text, glosses and biblical references, and apparatus appearing side-by-side on each page. J. Patrick Hornbeck, Ecclesiastical History, Volume 63/3 * Ecclesiastical History, Volume 63/3 *The texts are admirably edited. ... in the clarity of its presentation and a generous use of space, this is a most user-friendly volume (on the same lines as Exeter’s excellent The Idea of the Vernacular: An Anthology of Middle English Literary Theory 1280-1520, published in 1999). It is one of the most useful I have come across for some time—the sort that prompts the question, why has this not been done before? It should become an essential sourcebook for future work on the Bible in English in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and is a fitting tribute to a fine scholar, who died with so much more still to give. Richard Marsden, The Medieval Review, 12.05.15 * The Medieval Review, 12.05.15 *Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION: • discusses the context and significance of the debate about the English Bible • outlines the contents, authorship, date and manuscript tradition of the texts in this edition • considers the extent to which the texts may be seen as Wycliffite, and the interplay of orthodoxy and non-orthodoxy in the Bible debate and in pre-1409 England. TEXTS: 1. The Prologue to the Wycliffite Bible 2. The Prologue to Isaiah and the Prophets 3. Twelve tracts advocating translation in Cambridge University Library Ii. 6. 26 4. First seiþ Bois 5. The holi prophete Dauid 6. Glossed Gospel prologues and epilogues 7. ‘In þe bigynnyng of Holi Chirche’ 8. The commentary focuses on elucidating context and meaning; textual and linguistic questions will be addressed where they affect meaning. Where the literal meaning may not immediately be clear to a reader moderately familiar with Middle English, translational glosses is provided alongside the text. Boydell & Brewer Ltd Women Saints Lives in Old English Prose

Book SynopsisTranslations of eight saints' lives, giving an insight into women's religious culture in Anglo-Saxon England.Devout, virtuous and independent, the heroines of Old English saints' lives (one of the most popular literary genres of the middle ages) provided exemplars of personal and public inspiration for medieval Christians. The eight lives translated here are the earliest known vernacular accounts of the biographies of Æthelthryth, Agatha, Agnes, Cecilia, Eugenia, Euphrosyne, Lucy, and Mary of Egypt. They depict women escaping unwanted marriages, communicating with male relatives, acquiring an education, living autonomously as hermits, and achieving positions of leadership; such lives document not only the importance of spiritual faith to early Christian women, but also testify to how these women (and their audience) employed faith as a tool for empowerment. Each life is preceded by a brief description of the saint's cult from its early Christian origins to its presence in Anglo-Saxon culture. The translationis accompanied by an introduction establishing the general background for the genre, the conventions of women saints' lives, and women's religious culture in Anglo-Saxon England; and an interpretive essay exploring the relationships between explicit presentations of the female body and the strength of spiritual authority as exhibited in these texts completes the volume. Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Christian Tradition in AngloSaxon England

Book SynopsisEssays exploring a wide array of sources that show the importance of Christian ideas and influences in Anglo-Saxon England.A unique and important contribution to both teaching and scholarship. Professor Elaine Treharne, Stanford University. This is a collection of essays exploring a wide array of sources that show the importance ofChristian ideas and influences in Anglo-Saxon England. The range of treatment is exceptionally diverse. Some of the essays develop new approaches to familiar texts, such as Beowulf, The Wanderer and The Seafarer; others deal with less familiar texts and genres to illustrate the role of Christian ideas in a variety of contexts, from preaching to remembrance of the dead, and from the court of King Cnut to the monastic library. Some of the essays are informative, providing essential background material for understanding the nature of the Bible, or the distinction between monastic and cleric in Anglo-Saxon England; others provide concise surveys of material evidence orgenres; others still show how themes can be used in constructing and evaluating courses teaching the tradition. Book SynopsisPenitential practice in the Holy Roman Empire 900-1050, examined through records in church law, the liturgy, monastic and other sources. This study examines all forms of penitential practice in the Holy Roman Empire under the Ottonian and Salian Reich, c.900 - c.1050. This crucial period in the history of penance, falling between the Carolingians' codification of public and private penance, and the promotion of the practice of confession in the thirteenth century, has largely been ignored by historians. Tracing the varieties of penitential practice recorded in church law, the liturgy, monastic practice, narrative and documentary sources, Dr Hamilton's book argues that many of the changes previously attributed to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries can be found earlier in the tenth and early eleventh centuries. Whilst acknowledging that there was a degree of continuity from the Carolingian period, she asserts that the period should be seen as having its own dynamic. Investigating the sources for penitential practice by genre, sheacknowledges the prescriptive bias of many of them and points ways around the problem in order to establish the reality of practice in this area at this time. This book thus studies the Church in action in the tenth and eleventh centuries, the reality of relations between churchmen, and between churchmen and the laity, as well as the nature of clerical aspirations. It examines the legacy left by the Carolingian reformers and contributes to our understanding of pre-Gregorian mentalities in the period before the late eleventh-century reforms. Book SynopsisAn account of how, in certain parts of sixteenth-century England, challenges to conventional piety anticipated the Reformation. Here is a richly detailed account of the relationship between Lollard heresy and orthodox religion before the English Reformation. Robert Lutton examines the pious practices and dispositions of families and individuals in relationto the orthodox institutions of parish, chapel and guild, and the beliefs and activities of Wycliffite heretics. He takes issue with portrayals of orthodox religion as buoyant and harmonious, and demonstrates that late medieval piety was increasingly diverse and the parish community far from stable or unified. By investigating the generation of family wealth and changing attitudes to its disposal through inheritance and pious giving in the important Lollard centre of Tenterden in Kent, he suggests that rapid economic development and social change created the conditions for a significant cultural shift. This study contends that in certain parts of England by the early sixteenth century piety was subject to dramatic changes which, in a number of important ways, anticipated the Reformation. • English Catholic Exiles in Late SixteenthCentury

Boydell & Brewer Ltd English Catholic Exiles in Late SixteenthCentury

Book SynopsisAn investigation of the activities of Catholic exiles in Paris, showing them to have a wider influence on both sides of the Channel.Religious exile was both a familiar and a deeply discomforting phenomenon in Reformation Europe. In the turbulent context of the later sixteenth century, a group of English Catholic exiles in Paris became a source of serious concern to the Protestant government at home and a destabilising presence in their host environment; their residence in Paris coincided with and contributed to a crisis in authority for the French Crown, and the buildup to the Spanishenterprise of England. This book uses a range of evidence from both sides of the Channel to investigate the polemical and practical impact of religious exile. It reconstructs the experience and priorities of the English Catholic laity and clergy in Paris, moving beyond contemporary stereotypes of the exiles, and the traditional historiographical view of English Catholicism as isolated and introverted. It emphasises the importance of placing English Catholic experience into a broader European context, shedding light on the significant place of France in their activity, thus offering a new angle entirely on the relationship between England and the continent in the early modern period. • Atheism Religion and Enlightenment in

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Atheism Religion and Enlightenment in

Book SynopsisAn investigation into the influence of, and reaction to, the atheistic writings of the baron d'Holbach. The Baron d'Holbach, a prominent figure in the French Enlightenment, is best known for his writings against religion. His prolific campaign of atheism and anti-clericalism, waged from the printing presses of Amsterdam in the yearsaround 1770, was so radical that it provoked an unprecedented public response. For the baron's enemies, at least, it suggested the end of an era: proof that the likes of Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau were simply a cabal of atheists hell-bent on the destruction of all that was to be cherished about religion and society. The philosophes, past their prime and under fire, recognised the need to respond, but struggled to know which way to turn. France's institutional bodies, lacking unity and fatally distracted, provided no credible lead. Instead, the voice of reason came from an unlikely source - independent Christian apologists, Catholic and Protestant, who attacked the baron on his own terms and, in the process, irrevocably changed the nature of Christian writing. This book examines the reception of the works of the baron d'Holbach throughout francophone Europe. It insists that d'Holbach's historical importance has been understated, argues the case for the existence of a significant "Christian Enlightenment" and raises questions about existing secular models of the francophone public sphere. Book SynopsisThe voices of non-conformity are brought to the fore in this new exploration of late seventeenth-century politics, religion and literature.2022 Richard L. Greaves Prize Honourable MentionWhilst scholars have recently offered a much deeper and more persuasive account of the centrality of religious issues in shaping the political and cultural worlds of Restoration England, much of this has been broad-brush and the voices of individual established Church figures have been much more clearly heard than those of dissenters. This book offers a fresh and challenging new approach to the voices that the confessional state had no prospect of silencing. It provides case studies of a range of very different but highly articulate dissenters, focusing on their modes of political activism and on the varieties of dissenting response possible, and demonstrating the vitality and integrity of witnesses to a spectrum of post-revolutionary Protestantism. It also seeks, through an exploration of textual culture and poetic texts in particular, to illuminate both the ways in which nonconformists sought to engage with central authorities in Church and State, and the development of nonconformist identities in relation to each other. GEORGE SOUTHCOMBE is Director of the Sarah Lawrence Programme, Wadham College, Oxford.Trade ReviewThis fine and original study is a model of academic prose: lucidly argued, precise without being pedantic, fully and impeccably substantiated, scrupulous and generous in acknowledging the work of other scholars, with an admirably inclusive bibliography of the relevant secondary literature. * THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY *Southcombe in general is drawn to close engagement with the poetry produced by his exemplars, unsurprisingly perhaps, given that he is the editor of a three-volume anthology, English Nonconformist Poetry, 1660-1700 (2012); he is a master of reading the almost unreadable. Certainly this monograph refreshes our notions about the culture of Restoration dissent. * Milton Quarterly *[T]his volume will commend itself to historically minded readers of Restoration literature and has the merit of debunking some cliches, such as the dissenters' "spirit of defeat." . . . Book SynopsisThe primacy of the bishop of Rome, the pope, as it was finally shaped in the Middle Ages and later defined by Vatican I and II has been one of the thorniest issues in the history of the Western and Eastern Churches. This issue was a primary cause of the division between the two Churches and the events that followed the schism of 1054: the sack of Constantinople by the crusaders in 1204, the appointment by Pope Innocent III of a Latin patriarch of Constantinople, and the establishment of Uniatism as a method and model of union. Always a topic in ecumenical dialogue, the issue of primacy has appeared to be an insurmountable obstacle to the realization of full unity between Roman Catholicism and the Orthodox Christianity. In this timely and comprehensive work, Maximos Vgenopoulos analyzes the response of major Orthodox thinkers to the Catholic understanding of the primary of the pope over the last two centuries, showing the strengths and weaknesses of these positions.Covering a

Joseph L. Book SynopsisA very useful source for the history of the early 20th-century church. JOURNAL OF ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY Daily preoccupations of the bishop cast light on church and society in and around Lincoln before and during the first worldwar.Bishop Edward Lee Hicks' diary offers an honest picture of the daily life of a bishop in the period immediately before and during the first world war, a portrait of church and society in a largely rural diocese in the last phase before the radical transformation which the `Great War' hastened. The diary presents a largely church-centred picture; but it is also valuable as a personal view of such matters as Lincolnshire social life including the impact of war on the county, conditions of travel at the beginning of the era of the motor car, characteristics of the clergy, and frequent comment on items of archaeological and antiquarian interest.Canon GRAHAM NEVILLEwas Canon andPrebendary of Lincoln Cathedral from 1982-1987.Trade ReviewThis private diary offers a fascinating glimpse of the day-to-day life of a bishop in the early decades of the twentieth century... Illuminating and helpful...a very useful source for the history of the early twentieth-century Church of England. * JOURNAL OF ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY *Table of ContentsThe text of the diaries: volume I - June 24 1910-June 12 1915; volume II - June 15 1915-April 20 1919.

Book SynopsisThe minutes of the Corporation provide fascinating detail of the local impact of hostilities on the social and economic life of the town.Grantham had considerable local importance as a garrison town for both sides during the first Civil War. Its situation on the Great North Road gave it additional military and strategic significance. The Hallbook contains the recorded minutes of Grantham Corporation; it reflects the fates of successive aldermen who joined the Royal forces, went as hostage to Lincoln, and suffered imprisonment in Nottingham castle, and it provides a fascinating glimpse intothe lives of the townspeople during this time of crisis. Householders were forced to pay taxes to both sides in the war, as well as shouldering their normal burden of taxation. Besides contributing to poor relief, their time and talents were also in demand for many tasks, including paving the streets, reinforcing the banks of the Witham, maintaining the town wells, doing watch and ward, paying quarteridge, and removing refuse from the streets. This latestvolume of the Lincoln Record Society provides much evidence about the local impact of hostilities on the social and economic life of the town.Trade ReviewDeserves the attention of anyone interested in urban history at this critical juncture in English history. * SIXTEENTH CENTURY JOURNAL *

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Registers of Henry Burghersh 13201342

Book SynopsisBurghersh revealed as conscientious diocesan; new light on his involvement in invasion of Isabella and Mortimer in 1326.Henry Burghersh, bishop of Lincoln from 1320 until 1340, has not been treated kindly by historians. The largely hostile view expressed by early fourteenth-century chroniclers gives us a portrait of a man promoted to the office ofbishop solely as a result of family influence and royal intervention, but who subsequently betrayed the monarch who had favoured him, lending support to the rebellion of Thomas of Lancaster in 1322 and plotting with Queen Isabellato overthrow her husband. This edition of Burghersh's episcopal register reveals a different character. The bishop emerges as a conscientious diocesan and an administrator of considerable ability, while the evidence of his itinerary throws new light on the question of his involvement in the invasion of Isabella and Mortimer in 1326. The volume includes the first part of Burghersh's institution register, comprising admissions of clergy to parochial benefices, appointments of heads of religious houses, and ordinations of vicarages and chantries in the archdeaconries Northampton, Oxford, Bedford, Buckingham and Huntingdon. Dr NICHOLAS BENNETT is Vice-Chancellor and Librarian of Lincoln Cathedral.Trade ReviewDr Bennett has maintained the high standards of his first volume; his labours will be much appreciated, and his work much used. * LINCOLNSHIRE HISTORY & ARCHAEOLOGY *
