Open University Press Disability Discourse
Book Synopsis* Why has 'the discursive turn' been sidelined in the development of a social theory of disability, and what has been the result of this?* How might a social theory of disability which fully incorporates the multidimensional and multifunctional role of language be described?* What would such a theory contribute to a more inclusive understanding of 'discourse' and 'culture'?The idea that disability is socially created has, in recent years, been increasingly legitimated within social, cultural and policy frameworks and structures which view disability as a form of social oppression. However, the materialist emphasis of these frameworks and structures has sidelined the growing recognition of the central role of language in social phenomena which has accompanied the 'linguistic turn' in social theory. As a result, little attention has been paid within Disability Studies to analysing the role of language in struggle and transformation in power relations and the engineering oTrade Review"Most new books recycle existing thought, but occasionallya book comes along which offers a new set of ideas and a fresh perspective. This international compilation does both: it provides the familiar alongside the normal." - The Times Educational Supplement "Disability and the Dilemmas of Education and Justice pulls no punches. It is a relentless critique of our current special educational needs system and of those who work in it." - Special Children "A thought provoking and interesting book, that raises many valuable issues. Certainly worth a read for all involved in special education." - Education Review "I have for over 30 years been concerned with the education of students with a variety of disabilities and of various degrees of disability, andbelieved that I had acquired a knowledge of most of theproblems experienced by disabled people. However, after reading the essays containedin this book my eyes have been opened to a myriad of other problems experienced by them, and for me the essays have opened up new avenues of thought on education as it affects disabled students. The writing of this book has long been overdue." - EducationToday "...a must for students...It brings special needs into the wide cultural arena which seems to me to be where it must be located as we moveinto the twenty-first century." - British Educational Research Journal "This book is stronglyrecommendedto anyone involved in special education." - Educational Research "...a book that will inform and enlighten even the most veteran and knowledgeable members of the special education profession...At the same time, it is written in sufficient detail and with enough background information to allow its ideas to be accessible to newcomers or lay readers. Its authors'perspectives are fresh, informed by multiple sources and disciplines." - Qualitative Studies in EducationTable of ContentsSeries editor's prefaceIntroductionreclaiming language in disability studiesPart one: Personal narrativesInside aphasiaThe wind gets in my wayI am more than my wheelsDepressed and disabledsome discursive problems with mental illnessNarrative identity and the disabled selfPart two: The social creation of disability identityWhy can't you be normal for once in your life? Taylor & Francis Illuminating The Dark Side of Occupation
Book SynopsisThis innovative volume introduces Twinleyâs concept of âThe Dark Side of Occupationâ. Focused on less explored and under-addressed occupations, it is an idea which challenges traditional assumptions around the positive, beneficial, health-promoting relationship between occupation and health. Emphasising that peopleâs individual experiences of occupations are not always addressed and may not always be legal, socially acceptable, or conducive to good health, the book investigates how these experiences can be explored theoretically, in practice and research, and in curriculum content for those learning about occupation. Beginning with a discussion of some assumptions and misunderstandings that have been made about the concept, the substantive chapters present and analyse tangible examples of the conceptâs applicability. This ground-breaking and practice-changing text provides ideas for future research and highlights contemporary, internationally relevant issues and concerns, sucTable of Contents1.The Dark Side of Occupation: An introduction to the Naming, Creation, Intent, and Development of the Concept Section I Theorising the Dark Side of Occupation 2.The Dark Side of Occupation: Accumulating Insights from Occupational Science 3.The Dark Side of Occupation: An Historical Review of Occupational Therapy 4.The Whole of the Moon: How Our Occupational Lens Helps or Hinders Our Exploration of the Dark Side of Occupation 5.Ontological and Epistemological Considerations in Understanding Occupations in Extreme and/or Oppressive Contexts: "Doing Non Violent Resistance" in Palestine Section II Researching the Dark Side of Occupation 6.Homelessness and Occupation 7.Occupational Transition from Smoker to Non-Smoker: The Perceived Consequences in Women’s Lives 8.Self-Defeating Behaviour in an Individual with Borderline Personality Disorder from An Occupational Perspective 9.Exploring the Impact of Childhood Sexual Abuse Trauma in the Context of the Occupation of Work Section III Occupational Therapy Practice 10.Challenges for Occupational Therapists Working with Clients who Choose Illicit, Immoral or Health-Compromising Occupations 11.Substance Use and Recovery as Part of Daily Life: A Zimbabwean Perspective of Substance Use as an Occupation among Young Adults Living with HIV 12.The Dark Side of Occupation in an Eating Disorder Intensive Day Service 13.Occupational Engagement in Forensic Settings: Exploring the Occupational Experiences of Men Living within a Forensic Mental Health Unit 14.The Development of an Assessment which Provides a Practical Application of the Concept of the Dark Side of Occupation for Practitioners and Students Section IV Occupational Therapy Education 15.Occupational Therapy Sounds Too Nice: Reflections from a Recently Trained Occupational Therapist 16.The Dark Side of Studying at University 17.How the Dark Side of Occupation can be Instructed in a Course: Learning from Occupational Therapy 18.Not Everything is Rosy and Not Everyone Wants to Fix their Garden: An Australian Example of Integrating the Dark Side of Occupation into Curriculum for Final Year Students 19.The Value of Exploring the Dark Side of Occupation in Pre-Registration Occupational Therapy Education, Using Homelessness as a Case Study 20.The Dark Side of Occupation: A Conversation of our Evolution and our Future

Taylor & Francis The Invisible Brain Injury Cognitive Impairments
Book SynopsisThe Invisible Brain Injury recounts, in her own words, the experience of Aurora Lassaletta, a clinical psychologist who suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) after a traffic accident. Presenting her unique dual perspective as both a patient and a clinician, Aurora highlights the less visible cognitive, emotional and behavioural symptoms common to acquired brain injury (ABI).This moving account showcases Auroraâs growing awareness of her impairments, their manifestation in daily life, how they are perceived, or not, by others and the tools that helped her survive. Each chapter combines Auroraâs perspective with the scientific view of a professional neuropsychologist or physiatrist who provide commentaries on her various symptoms. This book is valuable reading for professionals involved in neurorehabilitation and clinical neuropsychology and for clinical psychology students. It is a must read for ABI survivors, those around them and clinicians, who are all an essential part of the rehabilitation, adjustment and acceptance process involved with ABI. Trade Review'Aurora Lassaletta writes an insightful and engaging account of the consequences of her brain injury which is truly inspiring. This book succinctly describes and demonstrates with such clarity the invisible consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that so many experience but find it tricky to explain. Throughout the book she takes us on a journey through these consequences and how she comes to learn to work with them to lessen their impact on her day-to-day life. Her honesty and openness about the ongoing process of acceptance and reflections on identity within this context is so important in gaining insight into the psychological challenges faced following a TBI. This book will be of great value to those who have experienced a brain injury and their families as well as clinicians and researchers working in the field. I would encourage everyone to read this book who has experience of or interest in the impact of acquired brain injury. Thank you for sharing your experiences.' - Fiona Ashworth, DClinPsych, AFBPsS, Anglia Ruskin University, UK'Wow! This book captures the essence of the brain injury experience brilliantly. It is written in clear language that is easy to read and digest, addressing all the common challenges that people with brain injuries and their families go through in a way that few other such books have done. As both a clinical psychologist and a brain injury survivor, Aurora Lassaletta uniquely applies insightfulness and keen observation to her personal journey from "normal life" to injury and on through years of rehabilitation and personal growth. Her message of perseverance and hard work and hope is an inspiration not only for survivors and their families, but also for professionals, who will undoubtedly re-think their stereotypes of rehabilitation as mostly impairment-based and only relevant in the acute stages of injury. I can’t wait to have the book in hand to recommend to my colleagues and clients with brain injuries alike.' - Jill Winegardner, PhD, Director of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio, USA'This book, written by a colleague, provides a moving, honest and brave account of the experience of suffering a traumatic brain injury. The narrative and commentary vividly brings to the reader the sheer determination, professional support, and resilience required to make the long journey back to living a meaningful life after suffering a traumatic brain injury. It is essential reading for all of those interested in the real story of what long-term rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury actually entails for many people.' - Rudi Coetzer, DClinPsy, School of Psychology, Bangor University, UK.'Aurora Lassaletta writes an insightful and engaging account of the consequences of her brain injury which is truly inspiring. What I particularly liked was the last section that looked at how people cope with this life threatening and life changing experience and how the experience can produce often uplifting positive and personal growth experiences." – Dr. Trevor Powell, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, UK"This book not only provides very practical accounts of the experiences of those who have suffered from SAH, but it is written with compassion and insight. It effectively provides a very useful guide through the difficulties that might be encountered by those who have experienced SAH, and so ought to be essential reading not only for the survivors of SAH but also professionals, friends and families who are involved." - Dr. David W. Jones, Principal Lecturer, University of East London, UK"The author has put time and dedication into giving people who have survived a subarachnoid haemorrhage a voice. Only through such an approach, the holistic needs of those surviving this condition can be truly identified, and as such is invaluable... This is an excellent text, well presented in a logical format and natural writing style. It contributes significantly to a gap in the literature." - Neal Cook, British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, October 2008Table of ContentsPreface. The Dented Image. Part I: Setting the Scene. Elsevier Health Sciences Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy Adults and
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewNow in its fourth edition this text is a must for all physiotherapy students. The chapters are well laid out, and all of the information is explained in an easily understandable way. This new edition provides the most up to date information for clinical practice from paediatrics through to the elderly. Chapter six is particularly useful, it provides the reader with case studies and then works through a logical way of problem solving along with introducing the reader to specific outcome measures. All in all a must have text!!!! - Laura Culpan, Physiotherapy Student, University of Bradford This book is a must have for respiratory learning as it is clear and concise and contains both adults and paediatric care. The clear diagrams make it easier to learn and the chapters cover core subjects for example assessments, techniques, paediatrics, ventilation and many more. Throughout the authors have made small summary physio points which will be useful when revising for a particular topic. The authors have also used flow charts and pictures to put across some of the information which is very useful for visual learners. I would very much recommend this book as it contains all of the information needed for respiratory at university and during your career. - Charlotte Barrett, Physiotherapy Student, Cardiff University, UK. Overall this is a good all-round, evidence based resource to use whilst studying or if newly qualified that covers all the main aspects of respiratory and cardiac physiotherapy. It is a great place to start when writing case studies in this field. This book is structured in the familiar style that we have come to know Elsevier for: a logical and clear design that is well laid out with the text presented in a variety of formats and supported with photographs, drawings and diagrams. The sections covering surgery, again provide good information for the student, particularly things like commonly used drugs and side effects, terminology and common procedures that are likely to be encountered. Finally, there are a number of handy images stored online that can be used in your presentations but perhaps this facility would have been better with a few more resources available, such as quizzes or tests to assess knowledge. - Linda Wilkinson, Physiotherapy Student, University of Southampton, UK. As a 1st year physiotherapy student, I've been able to use this book to understand the pathophysiology of cardiorespiratory problems as well as their clinical management. It's also well structured, beginning with the assessment of a cardiorespiratory patient and covering assessment tests and techniques and their interpretation. I also like that it has separate sections for paediatrics and adults and also has a good overview of types of surgery. I feel that this book is not only useful to me now but will be essential when I go on placement, as a reference to clarify and build on my day-to-day learning. I would recommend this text to anyone looking for a good overall cardiorespiratory text. - Mayuri Butchart, Physiotherapy Student, King's College London, UK. Book SynopsisIn an era in which the medicalization of mental health troubles and treatment has been settled for several decades, little is known about how this biomedical framework affects practitioners’ experiences. This book explores how practitioners make sense of a field that has shifted rapidly in just a few decades.Trade Review"This is a compelling project. Too often sociologists assume that the blueprint laid out by the DSM is equivalent to practice. This colors our discussions of medicalization in general, perhaps leading us to overstate its reach and breadth and obscuring the ways it is negotiated in practice. By delving more deeply into these practices – and the reasoning behind them – Smith’s research has great potential to bring nuance to the discussion of medicalization. The book wants to go beneath our general discussions of medicalization to see how it plays out in practice. Through a comparison of three groups of clinicians, she reveals the distinct dilemmas clinicians face, as well as their responses to the prevailing paradigm in practice. These play out in often unanticipated ways." -- Owen Whooley * author of Knowledge in the Time of Cholera: The Struggle over American Medicine in the Nineteenth Ce *"Dena Smith provides us with an analysis of the medicalization of mental disorder, and its impact on the conceptions and treatments in psychiatry. Basing her work on 43 interviews with mental health professionals, Smith provides new insights on the role of medicalized perspectives on psychiatric work.” -- Peter Conrad * Brandeis University *"Highly recommended." * Choice *Table of ContentsFrom meaning-making to medicalization Practitioner portraits and pathways to practice The promise of 'imperfect communication' and the 'prison' of rigid categorization : the DSM in practice Etiological considerations and the tools of the trade : the role of medication and talk therapy in practice The consequences of the biomedical model for practice and practitioners : psychodynamic therapy in a biomedical world Conclusion : the dangling conversation : ambiguity in mental health practice
