The present issue gives an insight in the research of displaced persons (DPs) in Austria and Germany. Four contributions focus on the phenomenon of this assumingly largest refugee and immigrant group of Austria's and Germany's recent history from different perspectives and present new approaches. The authors plead for a culture-historical approach and therefore breathe new life into this study field.

After the brutal ending of the Nazi regime the establishment of a democratic post-war order was a major challenge in Austrian politics and society. In addition to general economic problems, Austria faced problems regarding the treatment of both former Nazis and thousands of displaced persons and refugees. The contributions in this journal discuss questions on denazification at universities and schools, the situation of Jewish displaced persons as well as the continuities of antisemitism within the legal analysis of Nazi crimes in the Austrian state Styria.

  • Educating Students with Refugee Backgrounds: A

    Verlag Barbara Budrich Educating Students with Refugee Backgrounds: A

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThis book examines the educational systems into which students with refugee backgrounds are placed when relocated into their new homelands. It discusses the current climate of neo liberalism which pervades schooling in many western countries and the subsequent impact on curriculum focus and teaching strategies. The authors propose ways in which these students can be educated with policies and perspectives which respect diversity and uniqueness, using among others a primary school in regional Australia dedicated to holistic education as an example. Informed by postmodern perspectives on education and its purposes and drawing on the interdisciplinary wisdoms of critical scholars, this book presents a theoretical introduction to the educational landscape as found in many of the countries in which students with asylum seeker and refugee backgrounds are placed as the result of forced resettlement in new homelands. It discusses the impact of reductionist pedagogical and epistemological policies which are the foundations of neo liberalism. It challenges educators and policy makers to see beyond superficial differences and competition and to focus instead on the very significant impact of trauma and loss that these students have experienced as children and young people. The book dares educators at all levels of policy and practice to become truly human again and to consider the role of educational love and care that formed the cornerstones of educational endeavours for authentic pedagogues for decades. The book concludes with a research-based study of a school in a regional Australian town which not only educates with an ethic of pedagogical love and care, promoting a sense of belonging and emotional wellbeing for all students, 30% of which are of asylum seeker and refugee backgrounds, but celebrates high academic standards needed for student success, as well.Table of ContentsFrom the Contents; Introduction; Part A Theory and Education; Chapter 1 Education and Students with Asylum Seeker and Refugee Experiences; Chapter 2 Attempting to understand Other; Chapter 3 School as Community; Chapter 4 Ways of knowing and doing; Chapter 5 Language, oracy and imaginative learning; Part B Educating with wisdom and humanity – A school profile; Chapter 6 Neoliberalism, an ethic of care and holistic education; Chapter 7 Teaching, diversity and trauma; Chapter 8 Global citizenship and cultural identity; Chapter 9 Integral education and epistemologies; Chapter 10 Communities, communication and voices of empowerment;

  • Exile in London: The Experience of Czechoslovakia

    Karolinum,Nakladatelstvi Univerzity Karlovy,Czech Republic Exile in London: The Experience of Czechoslovakia

    15 in stock

    Book SynopsisDuring World War II, London experienced not just the Blitz and the arrival of continental refugees, but also an influx of displaced foreign governments. Drawing together renowned historians from nine countries--the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, the former Yugoslavia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia--this book explores life in exile as experienced by the governments of Czechoslovakia and other occupied nations who found refuge in the British capital. Through new archival research and fresh historical interpretations, chapters delve into common characteristics and differences in the origin and structure of the individual governments-in-exile in an attempt to explain how they dealt with pressing social and economic problems at home while abroad; how they were able to influence crucial Allied diplomatic negotiations; the relative importance of armies, strategic commodities, and equipment that particular governments-in-exile were able to offer to the allied war effort; important wartime propaganda; and early preparations for addressing postwar minority issues.

    Anthem Press The Fleeing People of South Asia: Selections from

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisThe history of human civilizations is also the history of human displacements. From ancient times to the contemporary age, every year millions of people flee from their homes and lands in the face of imminent persecution for physical, social and cultural traits, which they cannot control, or exercising their religious or political beliefs. Large-scale ''development'' projects as well as natural calamities have also caused large-scale displacements followed by ill-managed rehabilitation regimes. As a result, over one percent of the world''s total population today consists of refugees and internally displaced persons. South Asia is the fourth largest refugee producing region in the world. There is a close link between state formation and forced migration in this region. Ethnic violence, development work, natural calamities and climatic changes also make people, especially the indigenous ones, flee and settle in extremely unbearable new and foreign conditions. Women and children constitute the bulk of the displaced population. Refugee Watch, in its decade-long 30-volume journey, has sought to capture the agony, tension and struggle of the refugees and internally displaced in South Asia in its different dimensions. The present Selections are a sincere attempt to grasp the multi-dimensionality of the journal within two covers.

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisSince 2014, the international community has felt overwhelmed by refugees and asylum seekers searching for opportunities in which to rebuild their lives. Indeed, large numbers can result in turmoil and concern in resettlement countries and with national citizens. A climate of fear can result, especially if perpetuated by politicians and media that suggest negative effects resulting from immigration. Caught in the crossfire of social and political disagreements about migration are children, most of whom are not included in decisions to leave their homelands. This edited book examines their academic challenges from the perspective of the six English-speaking refugee resettlement countries. Our hope is not only to compare challenges, but also to describe successes by which teachers and policymakers can consider new approaches to help refugee and asylum-seeking children. Educational Policies and Practices of English-Speaking Refugee Resettlement Countries offers perspectives from established and new scholars examining educational situations for refugees and asylum seekers. The top three resettlement countries are the United States, Canada, and Australia. For its size, New Zealand is also proportionately a country of high resettlement. New to resettlement are the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Thus, this collection includes wisdom from countries that began resettlement during World War Two as well as newcomers to the process. In 2018, UNHCR numbers of displaced people reached a record high of 68.5 million. Policymakers, teachers, social service providers, and the general public need to understand ways to help resettled refugees become productive members in their new countries of residence. Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Turkey: Syrian Refugee Resilience Plan 2018-2019

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisThe Syrian Refugee Resilience Plan (SRRP) is FAO's guiding document to support the Government of Turkey in addressing the needs of Syrians under Temporary Protection (SuTPs) and vulnerable host communities in Turkey. The plan is based on a holistic cooperative approach involving a variety of actors, as well as partnerships with the private sector and local institutions that have been the main service providers for SuTPs and local populations. The plan is structured around five pillars: promoting skills and knowledge for sustainable agricultural livelihoods and food security and nutrition; supporting employability and entrepreneurship in the food and agriculture sector; investing in the sustainable development of the agriculture sector and utilization of natural resources; improving access to social protection; and managing knowledge in the food security and agriculture sector. It aims to directly support the resilience of more than 60 000 households (approx. 300 000 people, of which at least 40 percent are women and women-headed households) from Syrian and host communities in Turkey affected by the crisis. It also includes capacity-building initiatives for national and local government bodies, non-governmental organizations and local institutions, such as associations and cooperatives.
