Book SynopsisThe HST is a workhorse block unit that can be used to make beautiful, timeless quilts. This book shows you the multiple methods for making them (from the slow to the speedy) and combines HSTs with other pieced blocks that complement the triangle blocks. The book is organised into four main sections: patterns that feature Colour, Scale, Patchwork Play and, finally culminating with a chapter on Half-Square Triangles only. This final chapter features an inspirational index of over 12’’ 60 HST block designs and encourages the reader to design their own quilts using a single block or combining a few.Trade ReviewThe Half-Square Triangle (HST) is a quilt making staple. Whilst the HST may be a simple block, it yields complex results. A series of 12 patterns start with a beginner friendly, fast and easy design and progress to more challenging designs. The HST is a basic block unit that can be used to make beautiful, timeless quilts. This book shows you the multiple methods for making them (from the slow to the speedy) and combines the HSTs with other pieced blocks that complement the triangle blocks. The final chapter features an inspirational index of over 60 HST block variations and encourages the reader to design their own quilts using a single block design or combining a few. * Sewing World *In this interesting book all the 12 quilts are entirely made with half square triangles (HSTs). There is an introduction to making HSTs, all are made larger than needed and trimmed to the correct size. The designs progress from simple rows of HSTs to a quilt resembling a medallion quilt made from 3 different sized HSTs. Scrappy HSTs can even be made by sewing 2" squares and small rectangles of fabric together to form squares. A gallery of 60 blocks shows HSTs in different arrangements. There are black and white grids to photocopy and colour. An original approach to a simple block. * British Patchwork and Quilting *Jeni takes the maths out of quilting and makes it easier for you to create amazing designs with half-square triangles. After she has shared her cutting menus so that you can create without having to do the maths, she then builds on this with 12 beautiful step-by-step designs. Each of the designs is presented in it's finished format. You are given details of how the look was created. You are then taken through the materials required, the cutting required and how to assemble the HST's. From there you are given details of how to add the borders. At each stage there are pictures to guide you on your way. I love the modern designs and colours that have been used in each of the projects. However these are only guides so you can make your own look for your own taste. Jeni takes you through everything you need to know about colour & scale. The book is jam packed with different designs that you can use with your HST's. As a newbie to quilting I found this invaluable. I love the fact that you can make the projects or use the information to create your own designs. I love the section on Patchwork Play. It's so much fun and seems such an easy method to create a unique quilt of your own. I also love the fact that you get projects to be able to try new methods out. The block party is filled with an amazing array of block designs. It has so many designs the only problem you might have is trying to pick which blocks you want to start off with. I think this book is one I'll be using time and again. I can't wait to get started on my project and seeing how mine comes out. My fingers are crossed and I am very hopeful that it will turn out well. I am sure it will with all the clear and easy to understand. * Crochet Addict UK *Table of ContentsIntroduction Techniques - Traditional Construction Method - 4-at-a-time Construction Method - 8-at- a-time Construction Method - Trimming Chapter 1: Colour - The affects of colour and fabric choices - Colour basics - Fabric placement quilt pattern - Warm/cool value quilt pattern - Black/white + colour quilt pattern Chapter 2: Size Matters - The affects of scale - Super sized quilt pattern - Two different sized HSTs quilt pattern - Three different sized HSTs quilt pattern Chapter 3: Patchwork Play - Incorporating other elements into a HSTs - String HST quilt - Patchwork HST quilt - Scrappy QST quilt Chapter 4: Half-Square Triangles Only - Index of different 60 HST blocks - Single block quilt pattern - Quarter block quilt pattern - 32 block sampler quilt pattern Chapter 5: Tools & Quilting Basics - Tools specific to HSTs - General quilting tools - Basic quilting techniques Resources & Acknowledgements

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLearn crazy quilting, the ultimate art of hand embroidery and embellishment. Nothing shows off beautiful stitching and embellishments like the blank canvas of a crazy quilt. Jenny Clouston's gorgeously illustrated primer shows you how to make your own heirloom crazy quilts. Learn which fabrics, threads, and needles to use; how to piece crazy quilt blocks; how to embroider with thread, ribbons, beads, and other embellishments; how to assemble your blocks into a finished quilt; and more. Trade ReviewMay 14 Crazy quilting can be very free-form and experimental, but there are some essential fundamental techniques which can be finicky and hard to master. Jennifer Clouston's book attempts to demystify the processes involved, and does so very successfully. An interesting potted overview of crazy quilting leads on to effective guides on materials, foundation piecing and seam treatment, and also a rather brilliant idea for storing scissors and thimbles for easy access, which we won't give away here... There's an almost forensic dissection of the constituent parts and techniques for many blocks, accompanied by some excellent, detailed photographs, that will prove extremely instructive and informative for quilters of all levels. Overall the book is a good exploration of a sometimes overlooked, but nevetheless fascinating, area of quilting. * Popular Patchwork *Table of ContentsContents [Chapter title] Acknowledgements Introduction A Brief History of Crazy Quilting Choosing Fabrics and Foundation Piecing Choosing Fabrics Foundation Piecing Requirements for each Crazy Hexagon Method Seam Treatment Requirements Basic Sewing Supplies Needles Threads, Requirements Silk Ribbon Requirements Beading Requirements Embellishing Requirements Crazy Hexagons Hexagon 1 Hexagon 2 Hexagon 3 Hexagon 4 Hexagon 5 Hexagon 6 Hexagon 7 Hexagon 8 Hexagon 9 Hexagon 10 Hexagon 11 Hexagon 12 Hexagon 13 Hexagon 14 Hexagon 15 Hexagon 16 Hexagon 17 Hexagon 18 Hexagon 19 Hexagon 20 Hexagon 21 Hexagon 23 Hexagon 24 Hexagon 25 Embroidery Stitch Dictionary Single Feather Stitch Double or Multiple Feather Stitch Straight Feather Stitch Knotted Feather Stitch Herringbone Stitch Whipped Herringbone Stitch Chevron Stitch Detached Chain - Lazy Daisy Chain Stitch Whipped Chain Stitch Lazy Daisy/Bullion Combination Stitch Weather Stitch Zig Zag Stitch Chain Feather Stitch Fly Stitch Stab or Straight Stitch Fern Stitch Colonial Knot Stitch Pistil Stitch Stem Stitch Blanket Stitch Closed Blanket Stitch Open Blanket Stitch Blanket Stitch Fan or Pinwheel Stitch Up and Down Blanket Stitch Cretan Stitch Whipped Spider's Web Stitch Bullion Knot Stitch Alternating Chain Stitch Cretan and Herringbone Stitch Combination Stitch Silk Ribbon Stitch Dictionaries Threading and Knotting Stitch Threading the Needle Stitch Knotting the Ribbon Stitch Fastening Off Stitch Stab Stitch Twisted Stab Stitch Bent Stab Stitch Whipped Stab Stitch Padded Stab stitch Whipped Chain Stitch Ribbon Stitch Padded Ribbon Stitch Loop Stitch Loop Stitch Bud Plume Stitch Ruched Roses Stitch Coral Stitch Curling Backstitch Stitch Spider Web Rose Stitch Loop Stitch with Colonial Knot Bead Stitch Detached Chain Stitch Bullion Detached Chain Stitch Fishbone Stitch Fern Stitch Split Stitch Beading Instructions A Few Points to Keep in Mind Single Bead Beaded Backstitch Beaded Sequin Beaded pointed Petal Beaded Rounded Petal Bugle and Seed Bead Chain Beaded Tassel Bugle Fan Sequin Fun Bugle Bead Leaf Beaded Chain Beaded Grape Beaded Bee Beaded Feather Upright Bugle Bead Beaded Forget-me-not Beaded Daisy Daisy Chain Freeform Bead Cluster Inspects, Webs and Miscellaneous Embroidery Instructions Dragonfly Spider Round Spider Web Straight Spider web Agapanthus Fushia Detached Chain Butterfly Delphinium Small Beaded Bee with Organza Ribbon Leaves Tiny Beaded Bee Silk Ribbon Bee Detached Chain Ribbon Butterfly Loop Stitch butterfly Ribbon Stitch and Fly Stitch Combination Rose Buds Detached Chain Bud Colonial Knot Bud Embellishment Instructions Buttons Plain Buttons Tied Buttons Bow Buttons Single Bead Button Simple Beaded Button Upright Bugle Beads and Beaded Tassel Beaded Pointed Petal Button Button Cluster Layered Button Stab Stitch Couching Knotted Couched Ribbon Couched Bow Couched Ribbon Garland Charms Couched Braid or Trim Ric Rac String of Beads Freeform Flower with Beads Center Ruched Slik Ribbon Garland Finishing and Joining the Hexagons Requirements for the Completion and Joining of the Hexagon Method Gallery Crazy Quilts Crazy Wall Hangings Crazy bags Crazy Trinket Box Indian Work About the Author

  • More Happy Quilter Variety Puzzles—Volume 3: 60+

    C & T Publishing More Happy Quilter Variety Puzzles—Volume 3: 60+

Book SynopsisKeep your mind sharp and have fun with over 60 completely new word puzzles for quilters and sewists, including crossword puzzles, word searches, Criss Crosses, and more! Great for guilds, classes, shop hops, and more. Give your favourite quilter or sewist the gift of entertainment with an activity book made just for them.Trade ReviewIf you are a keen quilter who also loves doing puzzles this should hit the spot. There are over sixty large print puzzles in this good sized book all with a quilting theme. Printed on smooth bright white paper and heavy enough to fall open and stay put, this is a user friendly book with very visible black print, although not all of it is large. Much is the same size you see in any other magazine sized puzzle book, but on better paper and blacker type. There are seven different types of puzzles in here, all of the word variety. You won’t find any of the more recent Japanese type such as sudoku or han-jie, but instead plenty of logic problems, kris kross, crosswords, word searches and three other types. If you don’t know how to solve any of these there are instructions at the front, and for checking answers (or when stuck) all solutions can be found at the back. Some quilting knowledge is required to solve several types of puzzles such as crosswords and anagrams, and puzzles are graded according to difficulty with the easiest at the front. The paper is better quality than that found in the average puzzle magazine or book, making it easier to erase mistakes and not be left with a hole. I am a puzzle addict who is always looking for something new and I enjoyed the quilting theme, paper quality and a new type of puzzle (to me anyway) that combines a crossword with a word search. Of course you can buy a cheap puzzle book for a lot less than $10 but not if you want themed puzzles or good quality paper. It would make an ideal gift if you can bear to part with it! -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *

Book SynopsisCreate unique art quilts of your favourite places – and the places you want to go! Meri Henriques Vahl shares her simple yet unique method for quilting realistic nature scenes and villages from fabric.Trade ReviewMany quilters make landscape quilts, but Meri Henriques Vahl’s landscape quilts have won several prestigious prizes. Why do they stand out? Because her landscapes are natural and realistic, and she is able to bring the scenes she creates to life by incorporating figures into them. In the first part of this book Meri describes the raw edge collage technique she uses to create the background scenes in her quilts. A scene can be based on a favourite photograph or any other type of image, and Meri reveals she uses images taken from a trawl through the internet in her own work. It seems too that any type of material that is the ‘right colour’ can also be used in this collage process, and nothing needs to be stuck down until you have achieved a result that you are happy with. Then, the whole picture is covered with a fine tulle to keep everything in place before being enhanced with the stitching that holds the work together. Finally, in this first section of the book there are instructions for a simple landscape collage project, that the reader can make to familiarize themselves with the technique. The second part of the book is dedicated to the unique technique Meri has devised to create the people she places in her quilts. This she calls her paper doll technique. Using a photograph or other image each person is first copied onto cotton fabric and then the image is slowly built-up using water colour pencils, before finally being dressed in the appropriate chosen fabrics. The whole technique is a complex one, but Meri gives clear instructions to help with each stage of the procedure. Meri also expands on how this same paper doll technique can be used for precise architectural features, animals, or other structures that you wish to include as part of your landscape. In this book Meri has found a way of breaking down and explaining her intricate methods of landscape construction in a way that makes them easy to understand and follow. It is illustrated with beautiful photographs of her quilts that augment this text. There are also some photographs of quilts made by some of her students, so perhaps using this book we can all have a go at making a prize-winning landscape quilt. -- Lis Tate, Library Officer * The Quilters’ Guild *A guide to making quilts inspired by photographs using fabric collage with tulle overlay and the author's Paper Doll technique to make realistic images. In the introduction, Meri discusses how she came across the collage tulle method of creating landscapes. This led to her development of her paper doll technique to bring lifelike imagery into the creations. The general method is described including design considerations and the adding of soft embellishments. Stitching, and how this can enhance an image, is then covered. An example landscape project is provided for you to try. The paper doll technique is covered in detail. This is where an image is drawn and coloured, ideally on a batik or similarly tightly woven background with a fusible foundation. This method can be applied to buildings and other features of your landscape. Squaring up your quilt, adding borders and binding are all covered and the main concept is that there are no rules. This is a clear instruction book for those interested in making quilt landscapes. -- British Patchwork and Quilting * British Patchwork and Quilting *

  • Contemporary Quilt Art An Introduction and Guide

Indiana University Press Contemporary Quilt Art An Introduction and Guide

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisA guide to the contemporary art of quilting for quilters and collectors alike. It illustrates the various styles of quilt art, introduces artists, and discusses aspects of their art. It gives an overview of exhibition and marketing opportunities and lists art quilt organizations at the national, regional, and local levels.Trade ReviewToday's quilts are not just family heirlooms stored in a trunk. The concept of quilts as an art medium has created the terms "quilt art," "contemporary quilts," "studio quilts," and "art quilts." Quilts have become fiber or textile arts, part of a larger movement of crafts to fine arts status. Quilters are now artists who make wall hangings, study color and design, and display their work in galleries. Quilts are made with nontraditional materials and can be enhanced with embellishments, paint, photo transfers, or other media. Collectors and museums are acquiring quilts and displaying them as art. In this handsome book, independent scholar Lenkowsky reviews the history of the studio quilt and offers a critical discussion of the work of 19 prominent quilt artists. This very useful volume provides a guide for buyers and collectors, a glossary, a short bibliography, and biographies of the featured artists. Also offered is information on how to learn more about collecting, buying, and commissioning studio quilts, along with material on practical matters such as displaying, storing, and insuring quilts. Lushly illustrated, this volume is a feast for the eyes that will help to inspire not only quilters but also artists in other media. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. -- N. J.
