  • By the Bundle: Turn Precuts into Patchwork with

Lucky Spool Media By the Bundle: Turn Precuts into Patchwork with

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNo quilter can resist a stack of beautifully co-ordinated fabrics all neatly folded into a bundle and tied with a bow. As more fabric stores specialise in combining and marketing their own custom bundles of fat quarters, it leaves many quilters with just a ‘taste’ of many fabrics in the form of these 18 x 22’’ cuts (called fat quarters) but not really enough to make an entire quilt out of. Emma, a former fabric shop owner in Australia herself, inspires quilters to create one of her 12 quilts specifically designed to showcase these fabulous cuts whether they are from a single fabric collection or a complementary combination of many fabric lines. Emma’s patterns cross over beautifully between the modern and the new traditional quilt maker alike.Trade ReviewYou fell for the fabric and bought the bundle and it’s sitting on the shelf. Occasionally you dream about what to make, you take it down and smile at the colours and patterns, you even fondle the bundle, and then put it back on the shelf. Untie it and unleash it with this fabulous book. Create 12 quilts with pre-cuts. I don’t have 12 pre-cuts – should I buy more? These fat-quarter friendly projects will help you de-stash, or send you running to the quilt shop for more. The book explains what a fat quarter is, and then gets straight into the projects. The photography is breath-taking. The contemporary designs will speak volumes to the modern woman and quilt artist. The ideas are mainly geometric and colourful. Some of them could even be mix and match taking a row from several designs. I love Nellie Gray for its mix of white, grey and yellow. Star Burst is out of this world. All the designs are very handsome and desirable. You get block size and quilt size; materials, cutting and assembling with photos and diagrams and at least two photos of the finished quilt. At the back of the book, there’s how to finish everything off and templates. Recommended. * Yarns and Fabrics *A brilliant book that inspires you to use the collections of fat quarters you have. Emma's use of design is beautiful. The designs are clean and bright and inspiring. I love her use of colours and prints. I love the fact that she can use busy prints but by using calm and bright colours she makes a quilt that stands out. I think the book is designed for quilters that are used to following patterns to create amazing designs. The designs use everything from basic squares to more complicated shapes. This means that each quilter will find a quilt to produce at their level. I think the book would be fantastic to expand your skills. You could work your way through the book and expand your skills as you go. There are clear instructions with pictures and diagrams to support you. I can honestly say there isn't a quilt within the book that I wouldn't like to make. I love Emma's bundle of tips at the back of the book. They are so useful and easy to digest. It's brilliant when crafters pass on their hints and tips as it makes life so much easier for us newbies. There are 12 different projects packed into this book. Each of them uses different fabric with different designs and different uses of shapes in the quilts. You will be amazed how different fat quarters and shapes can create some amazing designs. http://www.crochetaddictuk.com/2016/10/by-bundle-lucky-spool-media-book-review.html * Crochet Addict UK *

  • Amish Quilts

Johns Hopkins University Press Amish Quilts

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBy thoroughly examining all of these aspects, Amish Quilts is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history of these beautiful works.Trade ReviewThe gap between what artisans intend and what dealers and owners come to believe is entertainingly conveyed in this study by the textiles historian Janneken Smucker... The book is timely since the history of folk art collection is under scrutiny. The New York Times Just as people who buy the New Yorker for its cartoons feel they've gotten their money's worth without reading beyond the punch lines, readers may take this up for the pictures alone: they are sumptuous... [Smucker] writes appealingly and clearly, always defining quilt jargon and explaining cultural mores as she tells of the seemingly humble Amish quilts and the people who have loved them. Publishers Weekly (starred review) It is handsomely and colorfully designed, playing on the theme of Amish quilts... Highly recommended. Choice The story of the rise of Amish quilts tells us more about the values of the art world than it does about the Amish. Yet it is a story that reminds us that constraint fosters creativity, and scarcity creates desire. First Things A fascinating social history of the Amish quilt phenomenon. Homespun As a history of the Amish quilt as an art object and a study of the commercialism of products imbued with Amishness, this work is invaluable. Smucker's exploration of how non-Amish collectors have been able to define and impose value on Amish products and how dealers, Amish and non-Amish, have appropriated the appeal of 'Amishness' while trading on stereotypes sheds much light on how mainstream society constructs the identity of minority ethnic groups. Journal of Mennonite Studies This compelling book looks closely at one form of material culture-Amish quilts-illuminating both their particular role in American history and the holistic methods by which to examine material culture... The book is well written and organized, thoroughly researched, and beautifully illustrated... It provides an important material culture case study, reminding us to look carefully at multiple cultural contexts as we build historical narratives. Journal of American History A fascinating story of the influence that the art world and commercial demands can have on a craft. Smucker debunks the theory that all Amish quilts are dark and cautions the reader against falling into the trap of generalisation when discussing their design. It is a refreshing examination of the story of Amish quilts that highlights how the art world has defined their value. Textile History Amish Quilts presents a story that lives up to its subtitle's promise, explaining how these fabric creations have become American icons. Without sentimentality, she unfolds the events that have been too long packed away, revealing the actions and motives of many of the people who played significant roles in the creation of the quilt market and of making new meanings for these objects. The Mennonite Quarterly Review Smucker's engaging writing style and keen sense of American history and consumerism makes this book suitable for academic libraries that service art and fashion programs, textile collections and museums, and public repositories in communities where craft is integral to daily life. Art Libraries Society of North America Smucker has combined meticulous scholarship, clear presentation, and thoughtful analysis to give general readers, museum curators, art historians, and material culture specialists the wherewithal to consider such claims of authenticity. Winterthur Portfolio Janneken Smucker provides a fascinating account of Amish quilts by placing the quilts into the context of history, culture, art, economy, and community. Your favorite instructors, Carrie and Harriet Hargrave, are back in this fifth book of the best-selling Quilter’s Academy series. Embrace the beauty of medallion quilts as you study historic and award-winning examples. Learn advanced techniques and precision drafting and math that naturally build upon everything you’ve learned thus far. Working through the lessons at your own pace, you’ll be challenged and inspired to design your own medallion masterwork.Trade ReviewThe fifth volume of this ongoing series focuses on medallion quilts, a traditional quilt design that is experiencing a renaissance among modern quilters. The goal of the series is to provide quilters with comprehensive information about quilting techniques and history via a series of lessons that build upon one another. The coverage is broad, including tutorials, historical background, projects, and tips for better quilting, and the authors cover everything from types of medallion quilts to tips for piecing borders to techniques for designing medallion quilts that are balanced and attractive. Both Hargrave and Hargrave-Jones are experienced quilt designers and authors, and their mastery of the topic shines throughout. The projects are easy to customize based on personal taste—the authors purposely used traditional fabrics for a timeless effect—and by the end of the book, quilters will have a repertoire of skills that will allow them to create their own custom medallion quilts. Book SynopsisTriangles, hexagons, diamonds, and more! Learn to measure, rotary cut, and machine piece 60° shapes with ease. Sew 15 interesting angular quilts with no templates, no Y-seams, and no paper piecing! Any 60° triangle ruler or straight ruler with a 60° mark works with these patterns. Arrange blocks in straight rows or kaleidoscope layouts for wildly different looks. After learning triangle grid basics, you’ll be able to design your own angled blocks and quilts.Trade ReviewGet started with tools, fabrics and basics. This book teaches angles - triangles, trapezoid, diamond, parallelogram and jewel, plus strip-pieced quilts and a primer 'design your own blocks'. Each 60° shape section has great quilt patterns. The 60° shape is thoroughly explored through techniques and possibilities. Sheila has the same design philosophy as myself: one thing leads to another. Standard sizes make strips easy to rotary cut and piece. The colour section is basic with one glaring error, blue does not face yellow on the colour wheel. Basic quilting techniques include cutting, seam sewing, chain piecing. This book comes into its own when we get to the lessons. Great grids, instructions and quick reference charts, super blocks and fantastic quilts. Marks out of 10 - A plus for the quilt designs; as a designer myself I would still love to sit down and make most of these. Highly recommended as a thorough grounding in 60° shape, ease of use, inspiration for all levels and 15 wonderful quilt designs. -- Karen Platt * Amazon *

Book SynopsisLearn about Civil War friendships across the Mason-Dixon line while you create your own historically inspired friendship quilt with 12 album blocks. Journey through time with Barbara's historical profiles of women from the South and North. Dive into history with historical images and quilt blocks that were popular during the Civil War.Trade ReviewI love quilting history and this book gives us 12 blocks, detailing the history of the women behind them. This quilt is about love and friendship, and while some of the stories about the women are not always happy, their tragedies add to the creation of each block. Of course, in those days the women did not have an endless supply of beautiful fabric, instead using remnants of old dresses and shirts of family members. This again makes the quilts unique and personal. I love the idea of using old clothing, giving each block a memory of a person or event. Each block has full instruction and templates where necessary. You can use one or two blocks for your quilt or make one each of the 12 to create something precious and amazing. The ideas are endless and using your own colours and designs each quilt will be a unique heirloom for generations to come. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *
