C & T Publishing Crazy Quilting Dazzling Diamonds: 27 Embroidered
Book SynopsisSew the Dazzling Diamonds crazy-quilt pattern, with 27 diamond-shaped, foundation-pieced blocks! Includes photos and step-by-step instructions.Trade ReviewKathy has done it again and created another fabulous book! Think you know all there is to know about embroidery and crazy patchwork? Then think again as this book offers a new and novel twist: crazy diamond patchwork! This comprehensive book expertly guides you through Kathy’s process of how to create dazzling diamond crazy patchwork! The section on creating the quilt blocks (supplies, construction, and embellishment) is clear, accessible, and easy to follow which step-by-step instructions alongside photos so that you feel supported and inspired to make along too! Following the block constructions, Kathy then guides you through a whole host of fibre embroidery stitches, silk stitches, combining these stitches and adding beads. Again, I adore how each of those sections not only has the written instructions but digital images to show how to create the stitch as well as a photo of the completed stitch. This combination really helps to build a comprehensive guide for creating the stitches. Kathy then shows you how to combine what you’ve learnt (block construction, fibre embroidery, silk embroidery and embellishments) to create her blocks. I love how these are laid out! The block is broken down into the materials/stitches used (with clear digital diagrams) as well as a photo of the finished block – utterly genius and inspirational! This is a truly sumptuous and inspirational book and I’d highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in stitching, embroidery, and patchwork! -- Naomi Clarke * naomialice.com *Make your own quilt using the foundation piecing method, and have fun decorating the seams with embroidery, beads, sequins and more. There are 27 fancy blocks and 56 seams to use for your quilt, all making up into a pattern of diamonds. This is not a beginner’s book but there is plenty of information for fairly novice quilters, including several pages of which fabrics to choose and a guide to seam decoration materials. There are sensible tips for washable options, and the author wisely keeps to the more affordable and easily sourced items. Learn about different types of thread, ribbon, and floss, and how to attach sequins, beads, and buttons in attractive ways. I was impressed by the author’s advice on making the right choices for a washable, affordable, and long wearing quilt. Also included are some instructions on basic embroidery and ribbon stitches, although the author remarks that these are kept to a minimum due to the availability elsewhere of stitch diagrams for beginners. There are fuller instructions with photographs and diagrams for assembling blocks, making up the quilt and more, including ideas for spring and autumn palettes and a printable colour-in blank for planning your quilt, an excellent idea I hadn’t seen elsewhere. The rest of the book contains life-size full-page blocks. On one page is a photograph of the finished block, and facing it is an actual size traceable pattern of the block, plus a small, coloured diagram with letter codes for each motif, relating to a list of stitches and embellishments. At the back of the book is a useful list of websites selling the various items, but this is just for US use. This is a lovely book filled with ideas for crazy quilted seams and blocks whether you want to make the featured quilt or something else. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *

Ohio University Press Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement
Book SynopsisThe story of the American Quilt Trail, featuring the colorful patterns of quilt squares painted large on barns throughout North America, is the story of one of the fastest-growing grassroots public arts movements in the United States and Canada. In Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement Suzi Parron takes us to twenty-five states as well as Canada to visit the people and places that have put this movement on America's tourist and folk art map.Through dozens of interviews with barn quilt artists, committee members, and barn owners, Parron documents a journey that began in 2001 with the founder of the movement, Donna Sue Groves. Groves's desire to honor her mother with a quilt square painted on their barn became a group effort that eventually grew into a county-wide project. Today, quilt squares form a long imaginary clothesline, appearing on more than three thousand barns scattered along one hundred and twenty driving trails. With more than eighty full-color photTrade Review“Barn quilts are America, Mom, and apple pie. If a long, long driving trip is not in your near future to view all these wonderful, creative, sometimes-eccentric works of art, pick up this book. It’s current events and living history, educational, fun, and—most of all—inspiring.” * Seminole Sampler *“Parron’s striking photographs and narrative of her journey on the Quilt Trail bring out the personal and community meaning behind quilts…. The book does justice to its subject, through the charm of its photographs and the many interesting stories behind this public art movement.” * Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine *“Parron's book covers the decade-long history of barn quilt trails and how the fever spread from Adams County, Ohio into 27 states. Since publication, Parron has followed its progress and states that feature the quilt trail has now reached 45 states. As the book unfolds, Parron relates human stories and anecdotes that help readers realize that the barn quilts are so much more than pieces of wood, paint and pretty patterns.” * Acreage Life Magazine *“(W)hat we have here is a larger, older, and all-encompassing American story about how we make claims to places, how we maintain community, and how we uphold shared values…. To tell this story, as Parron and Groves have so thoughtfully done, is to illuminate the extraordinary beauty that often comes from…community and nation-building tasks.” * Northwest Ohio History *“(Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement) is everything that a lover of traditional folk culture could desire. … The reader meets dozens of local heroines (and heroes) who organized the Trails in their communities.” * The Barn Journal *“Parron and Groves have documented these trails with full-color photographs that show how imaginative many artists have become, incorporating butterflies, horses, flags, and other natural and man-made designs within the more abstract geometries of traditional barn quilts. The text profiles many of the artists whose work dazzlingly enlivens America’s farm country.” * Booklist *“A great book to use as a reference to plan a trip or to simply learn more about the (barn quilt) movement and take in the beauty of some of the creations that grace county roads and highways throughout North America.” * The Budget *“Bravo to Suzi Parron and Donna Sue Groves for bringing to light the colorful and rich history of the barn quilt movement. It’s a tale of heart, hope, and deep rural roots…roots that started in Adams County but spread quickly across the land. Parron’s deep research and Donna Sue’s love of the subject provide a unique chapter in America’s art history. Happily, a country road is no longer the same.”“Barn quilts are a perfect fit with our area; they are an excellent companion to the other ag-tourism opportunities in Green County. This has been a great project because it ties the entire county together with an artistic rural theme, promotes county-wide pride, and gets our visitors to all the communities for a true adventure in exploring the roads less traveled along the way.”“The barn quilt project is one of the most successful and satisfying projects we’ve ever been involved with and we’re excited that this book documents the spread of this creative idea across our nation and beyond.”

International Quilt Study Center & Museum Nancy Crow: Drawings: Monoprints and Riffs
Book SynopsisNancy Crow: Drawings: Monoprints and Riffs is a beautifully illustrated catalog showcasing the newest work of renowned artist Nancy Crow. Over the last decade Crow has transformed her quiltmaking by developing a unique monoprinting technique. Monoprinting on cotton fabric, she focuses on drawn lines, layered one upon another, that result in a complex visual tangle. The work in this series simultaneously produces both clarity and depth. In her Riff and Drawing: Riff series, Crow has continued to explore her “drawing with fabric” approach. In these works Crow improvisationally cuts through layers of highly saturated hand-dyed fabrics, creating crisp forms with slight curves and undulations caused by subtle movements of her arm, which are then stitched together in dynamic compositions. This catalog includes Crow’s descriptions of these innovative techniques as well as candid musings on her personal journey as a driven, passionate artist. In addition, Crow’s work is discussed in an essay by Jean Robertson, Chancellor’s Professor Emerita of Art History at the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University–Purdue University. Also featured is a foreword by David Hornung, professor of art and art history at Adelphi University, New York. The catalog accompanies a 2020 exhibition of Crow’s work at the International Quilt Museum, University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

International Quilt Study Center & Museum Abstract Design in American Quilts at 50
Book SynopsisFifty years after its debut, the exhibition Abstract Design in American Quilts is remembered as a pivotal moment in the intersecting histories of art, craft, and design. Installed at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art in 1971, the exhibition presented traditional American pieced quilts on walls more commonly used to display modern art such as abstract expressionist paintings. The exhibition, curated by Jonathan Holstein and Gail van der Hoof from their own collection, unexpectedly struck a chord with museumgoers and art critics alike, breaking attendance records and subsequently traveling to museums across the United States, Europe, and Japan. With Abstract Design in American Quilts at 50, an exhibition series that includes an installation of the original quilt group, the International Quilt Museum at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln reexamines the half-century impact of this watershed exhibition. In five essays, leading quilt scholars assess the areas upon which the exhibition, in its various iterations, had its greatest impact, most notably the growth of quiltmaking across the United States and in art circles. The essays also discuss broader cultural phenomena that produced an environment in which quilts and other forms of material culture could be viewed and valued in new ways.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Pennsylvania Patchwork Pillowcases Other Small
Book SynopsisThe German immigrants to Southeastern Pennsylvania developed a rich and very colorful quilting heritage after they arrived in America. This book focuses on a rare subset of that tradition--the patchwork pillowcase. If antique Pennsylvania quilts number in the thousands, patchwork pillowcases number in the hundreds. Gathered from private collectors and museums, the pillowcases presented here were made from about 1820 to 1920. Over 250 color photos showcase a huge assortment of nineteenth century printed fabrics used in both pieced and appliqué pillowcases. Quilt designs range from a simple four-patch to a complex carpenter''s wheel, while color schemes range from reserved red and white to bold pink and cheddar. This book will delight the quilt historian and inspire the quilt-maker.
