Book SynopsisWith this edition, previously unknown French-language letters by Juliane Franziska von Buchwald, first lady-in-waiting to Luise Dorothea von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg, are presented for the first time in an annotated German translation. In the summer of 1738, under the guise of concern for her mother, Frau von Neuenstein, governess at the court of Württemberg, she began to correspond with Christoph Dietrich von Keller. As a lawyer and envoy of Württemberg at the court in Vienna, he was about to embark on one of his numerous political missions, which not only interested Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. The letters of Buchwald, who describes herself as an agent, accompany the time of the War of the Austrian Succession with ever more sophisticated encryption, embedded in a choreographed communication strategy. The correspondence with Keller, who was already praised by contemporaries as a brilliant letter writer, ended in 1750 shortly before he was appointed to the Gotha Privy Councilor and as a result of the almost complete blindness of Buchwald after an unsuccessful eye operation.

Die hier größtenteils erstmalig aus den Nachlässen Diltheys und seiner zahlreichen Briefpartner edierten und kommentierten Briefe geben Aufschluss über die Lebens- und Arbeitssituation Diltheys während seiner letzten zehn Jahre als ordentlicher Professor der Philosophie an der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Juli 1905. Einen inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt der Briefe dieses Bandes bildet durchgehend vor allem Diltheys Initiierung, Organisation und Leitung der Kant-Akademieausgabe. Ein weiterer Arbeitsschwerpunkt Diltheys liegt seit ca. 1900 in seinem Engagement für die Durchführung einer interuniversitär geplanten Leibniz-Akademieausgabe und seinen damit zusammenhängenden eigenen Forschungen, Aktivitäten und Schriften. Neben diesen beiden Großprojekten, an denen Dilthey maßgeblich und federführend beteiligt war, arbeitete er unermüdlich am zweiten Band des Lebens Schleiermachers und der Fortsetzung zur Grundlegung der Geisteswissenschaften parallel weiter, in der Hoffnung beides noch fertigstellen zu können. Die Analyse von Tagebüchern von Jugendlichen der Kinderlandverschickung als auch von Angehörigen von NS-Jugendorganisationen zeigt, dass zwischen ideologischen Vorgaben der richtigen Darstellung des Nationalsozialismus und realer Textproduktion erhebliche Diskrepanzen bestanden. Die Darstellung des KZ-Arztes Peter Hofer in Eugen Kogons SS-Staat offenbart eine weitere Sicht auf die NS-Zeit und zeigt die Notwendigkeit quellenkritischer Lektüre auch von Berichten ehemaliger KZ-Häftlinge. Die bisherige Dekonstruktion dieser das Bild der Konzentrationslager prägenden Publikation wird hier fortgesetzt, zugleich werden Forschungsdesiderata der KZ-Geschichte deutlich. Die sich im ersten Nachkriegsjahrzehnt verändernden Sichtweisen ehemaliger Nationalsozialisten auf die Entnazifizierungsbemühungen in Österreich zwischen Entlastungsstrategien, Selbstviktimisierung und Forderungshaltung eröffnen einen Blick auf das Fortleben nationalsozialistischer Wertevorstellungen in der Zweiten Republik durch die fatale Integration in das österreichische Opferkollektiv. Diaries are an important source of the individual's experience of dictatorship, also with reference to the Nazi Volksgemeinschaft (people's community). The analysis of both diaries of young adults evacuated to the countryside during the war (Kinderlandverschickung) and members of Nazi youth organizations shows considerable discrepancies between the ideological principles of the correct presentation of Nazism and real text production. The portrayal of Peter Hofer, concentration camp doctor in Eugen Kogon's SS-Staat (The Theory and Practice of Hell), not only reveals a further perspective of the Nazi era but also the necessity of a source-critical reading, even of reports of former concentration camp prisoners. The previous deconstruction of this publication, which shaped the image of the concentration camps, is continued here, while research desiderata of the concentration camp history become clear. The changing views of former Nazis on the denazification efforts in Austria in the 1950s, between relief strategies, self-victimisation and demands, give insights in Nazi value systems in the Second Republic through the fatal integration into the Austrian victim collective.

Book SynopsisIn 2001 the British Museum acquired the first of two ancient Egyptian stelae from the collection of the traveller Edward Roger Pratt (1789-1863) of Ryston Hall, Norfolk, and discovered his 1832-34 unpublished journals for Greece and Egypt and the 136-page album with his own drawings, watercolours, and paper impressions of bas-reliefs from a solo Nile voyage to the Second Cataract. Pratt recorded ancient monuments and sites, many later damaged or destroyed. In Greece Pratt travelled widely and adventurously with scholarly architects and artists studying ancient Greek sites, while in Egypt his guides were the works of the French Egyptologists Jean-François Champollion and Dominique Vivant Denon. A gregarious and enthusiastic traveller, Pratt was supported by extensive consular networks, expatriate communities and other travellers. In this volume his life and travels are reconstructed from his many journals, the travel journals for Greece and Egypt are transcribed and annotated, his maps and plans reproduced, his dispersed antiquities collection reconstructed, and the album drawings are identified and published in colour.
