  • Gossamer Years: Love, Passion and Marriage in Old

Tuttle Publishing Gossamer Years: Love, Passion and Marriage in Old

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis"A self-portrait devastating in its honesty…written passionately and without a thought to how readers might judge her actions."—Donald KeeneGossamer Years is a remarkably frank diary written by an unnamed noblewoman in Tenth-century Japan—the same period as Murasaki Shikibu's celebrated Tale of Genji. In her diary, the author describes her tempestuous and unhappy marriage and growing indignation at the many rival wives and mistresses taken by her husband, as was commonplace at the time. Too impetuous to play the role of a subsidiary wife, the author protests the marriage system in one of Japanese literature's earliest portrayals of the difficulties faced by women in a male-dominated society. Skillfully translated by Edward Seidensticker, a preeminent scholar of Japanese literature, this book represents an extraordinary flowering of realistic expression in ancient Japan and an attempt, unique for its age, to treat the human condition with frankness and honesty.A new introduction by Japanese literary scholar Dennis Washburn provides valuable insights into the author's world and examines the book's lasting importance. With dozens of beautiful images illustrating court life in the Heian period, Gossamer Years is a timeless and intimate glimpse into married life and social mores in traditional Japan.Trade Review"Just like The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, this is a diary from Heian Era of Japan, although unlike Sei Shonagon and Murasaki, this diary takes place prior to when they got to shine, and I can't help but get the feeling that it influenced Murasaki Shikibu a lot. …the supplemental information added by the translator is very helpful. PS, love the cover." --Svetlana's Reads and Views

Luis Chitarroni

Book SynopsisThe correspondence between Kamma Rahbek (1775-1829) and the writer and scholar Christian Molbech (1783-1857) is one of the most interesting human documents from the time of the Golden Age. Almost day by day we are witnessing an intense and conflict-ridden friendship that only lasted from the spring of 1813 to the end of 1814. The 302 letters throw light on the thoughts of two widely different personalities on life and on the individual at a critical time when Denmark was facing national bankruptcy and had lost Norway after the Napoleonic wars. Moreover, the correspondence is an important source of the history of a civilisation. The wise and witty letters from Kamma Rahbek are full of small vivid accounts of some of the days at Bakkehuset, a farmhouse that Kamma made into a rendezvous of the leading poets and public figures of that time. Oehlenschläger, Grundtvig and J P Mynster are just a few of the regular visitors. We are told of her literary interests, musical talents and her interest in flowers which mad

Book SynopsisThis fourth volume of J P E Hartmann og hans kreds. En komponistfamilies breve 1780-1900 (J.P.E. Hartmann and his Circle. The Correspondence of a Composer Family 1780-1900) contains hitherto unknown letters which have been privately owned until now. The particular focus is on J P E Hartmann's son Emil Hartmann and his struggle for recognition as a composer and not because of his relatives. The letters elucidate this struggle and provide a wealth of information on both the everyday life and the musical scene in the second half of the 19th century in which Emil Hartmann travelled a great deal in Germany where he was a well-known figure. Thus, letters from German celebrities, such as Richard Strauss and Max Bruch are included.

Damiani Ernst Haas. Letters & Stories

Book SynopsisInge Bondi combines her recollections with Ernst Haas' letters, poems, photos, to narrate Haas's 40 year photography career. The book is in itself a letter from Bondi to Haas. "[S]heds new light on the life of renowned Magnum photographer, Ernst Haas, while at the same time showcasing his art... It also tells the story of one of photography's great innovators, who always trod his own path." - Black+White Photography Writer Inge Bondi sheds fresh light on the life of her close friend and colleague, the Austrian American photographer Ernst Haas (1921–86), whom she first met in New York’s Magnum offices in 1951. Bondi shares unique memories of this brilliant and very private man alongside reproductions of his letters, poems, photographs, and ephemera, revealing for the first time details of his harrowing war years and complex personal life. The book’s 13 chapters cover Haas’ Homecoming Prisoners of War (1947), which prompted Robert Capa to invite him to join Magnum Photos; pioneering color reportage for Life and Vogue, featuring his blurred portraits of bullfighting and saturated images of New York; and his work on film sets, including The Bible, which led to the publication of Haas’ groundbreaking and acclaimed 1971 photobook The Creation.

Book SynopsisIusti Lipsi Epistolae. Pars IX contains the correspondence of 1596 and is edited by Hugo Peeters. Lipsius is finally feeling more at home in his native country: his financial situation has approved thanks to the title of historiographus regius involving an annuity of 1,000 florins, and the arrival of several contubernales, promising students accommodated at his home who will receive an almost constant training in Latin. The first part of the year finds him still occupied by the final details of the Poliorcetica, a sequel to De militia Romana expounding on war engines and siege tactics, which he dedicated to Prince Bishop Ernest of Liège. Near the end of the year he was focusing on a new project, the Monita et exempla politica, a practical sequel to the political theories elaborated in the Politica, which he intended to dedicate to Albert of Austria, the newly arrived governor of the Netherlands.

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 2001 the British Museum acquired the first of two ancient Egyptian stelae from the collection of the traveller Edward Roger Pratt (1789-1863) of Ryston Hall, Norfolk, and discovered his 1832-34 unpublished journals for Greece and Egypt and the 136-page album with his own drawings, watercolours, and paper impressions of bas-reliefs from a solo Nile voyage to the Second Cataract. Pratt recorded ancient monuments and sites, many later damaged or destroyed. In Greece Pratt travelled widely and adventurously with scholarly architects and artists studying ancient Greek sites, while in Egypt his guides were the works of the French Egyptologists Jean-François Champollion and Dominique Vivant Denon. A gregarious and enthusiastic traveller, Pratt was supported by extensive consular networks, expatriate communities and other travellers. In this volume his life and travels are reconstructed from his many journals, the travel journals for Greece and Egypt are transcribed and annotated, his maps and plans reproduced, his dispersed antiquities collection reconstructed, and the album drawings are identified and published in colour.

    2 in stock
