  • Promoting the Health of the Community: Community

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Promoting the Health of the Community: Community

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCommunity health workers (CHWs) are an increasingly important member of the healthcare and public health professions who help build primary care capacity. Yet, in spite of the exponential growth of CHW interventions, CHW training programs, and CHW certification and credentialing by state agencies, a gap persists in the literature regarding current CHW roles and skills, scope of practice, CHW job settings, and national standards. This collection of contributions addresses this gap by providing information, in a single volume, about CHWs, the roles CHWs play as change agents in their communities, integration of CHWs into healthcare teams, and support and recognition of the CHW profession. The book supports the CHW definition as defined by the American Public Health Association (APHA), Community Health Worker Section (2013), which states, “A community health worker is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served.” The scope of the text follows the framework of the nationally recognized roles of CHWs that came out of a national consensus-building project called “The Community Health Worker (CHW) Core Consensus (C3) Project”. Topics explored among the chapters include: Cultural Mediation Among Individuals, Communities, and Health and Social Service Systems Care Coordination, Case Management, and System Navigation Advocating for Individuals and Communities Building Individual and Community Capacity Implementing Individual and Community Assessments Participating in Evaluation and Research Uniting the Workforce: Building Capacity for a National Association of Community Health Workers Promoting the Health of the Community is a must-have resource for CHWs, those interested in CHW scope of practice and/or certification/credentialing, anyone interested in becoming a CHW, policy-makers, CHW payer systems, CHW supervisors, CHW employers, CHW instructors/trainers, CHW advocates/supporters, and communities served by CHWs.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction (Authors: Julie St. John, Wandy Hernandez, Susan Mayfield-Johnson, Lee Rosenthal, Carl Rush) a. Book SynopsisThis book is the first to focus on sex- and gender-based analysis (SGBA) in public health, addressing the dearth of thinking, practice, and publication on SGBA and public health. The Canadian government is a global leader in seeking gender equity and mandating SGBA in federal initiatives, programs, and policies, continuing to advocate for the uptake of SGBA. However, there is differential uptake of SGBA in many fields, and public health is lagging behind. This book analyses the movement toward SGBA in Canada and internationally, highlighting some key examples of public health concern such as HIV/AIDS and tobacco use.An international group of experts in the fields of SGBA, public health, program evaluation, policy development, and research comprise the authorship of the book. Collectively, the team of authors and editors have deep expertise in SGBA and public health nationally and internationally and have published widely in the SGBA literature.Topics explored among the chapters – organized under three thematic content areas: the SGBA terrain in public health, illustrative examples from the field, and the implications of SGBA in public health – include: Sex- and Gender-Based Analyses and Advancing Population Health Beyond “Women’s Cancers”: Sex and Gender in Cancer Health and Care Women, Alcohol and the Public Health Response – Moving Forward from Avoidance, Inattention and Inaction to Gender-Based Design Understanding Pandemics Through a Sex- and Gender-Based Analysis Plus (SGBA+) Lens Sex- and Gender-Based Analysis and the Social Determinants of Health: Public Health, Human Rights and Incarcerated Youth Gender-Transformative Public Health Approaches Sex- and Gender-Based Analysis in Public Health is an important text for graduate-level students and trainees as well as public health practitioners in a variety of disciplines such as health promotion, nursing, health administration, public administration, sociology, political science, gender and women’s studies. • The Science and Politics of Covid-19: How

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Science and Politics of Covid-19: How

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is a fresh and readable account of the Covid-19 pandemic and how scientists and medical doctors are helping governments to manage the crisis. The book contains interviews and exchanges with dozens of scientists, doctors, experts, government representatives, and journalists. Why do some of the most scientifically advanced countries have the highest Covid-19 mortality? During the pandemic, the research community has been at the heart of—and actor in—a global scandal. Why has science failed? With the help of numerous testimonies from China, France, the UK and the USA in particular, the book provides an insider’s view on this major crisis. Although the governments of these countries based their Covid-19 strategy on science, scientists failed to have a decisive influence on decision-makers—except in China—, which created genuine “time bombs.” The accelerated development of vaccines does not erase past months’ errors. The crisis led to the development of “science politics” at an unprecedented rate. More worryingly, experts themselves acknowledge that they did not rise to the challenge. Covid-19 also highlighted the weakness of democratic regimes and the power of technocapitalism. Countries pulled down their blinds, locked their doors, and promoted national approaches rather than international cooperation. The author proposes to set up an international framework on health risk to co-construct decision-making. He advocates political distancing in order to put the basics first: develop science, fight ignorance. The author, Michel Claessens on the Science for Policy Podcast from SAPEATable of ContentsA Microscopic Killer.- COVID-19 Diary.- Geopolitics of the Coronavirus.- Political Distancing.

  • A Multidisciplinary Approach to Capability in Age

Springer Nature Switzerland AG A Multidisciplinary Approach to Capability in Age

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book provides insight on how to interpret capability in ageing – one’s individual ability to perform actions in order to reach goals one has reason to value – from a multidisciplinary approach. With for the first time in history there being more people in the world aged 60 years and over than there are children below the age of 5, the book describes this demographic trends as well as the large global challenges and important societal implications this will have such as a worldwide increase in the number of persons affected with dementia, and in the ratio of retired persons to those still in the labor market. Through contributions from many different research areas, it discussed how capability depends on interactions between the individual (e.g. health, genetics, personality, intellectual capacity), environment (e.g. family, friends, home, work place), and society (e.g. political decisions, ageism, historical period). The final chapter summarizes the differences and similarities in these contributions. As such this book provides an interesting read for students, teachers and researchers at different levels and from different fields interested in capability and multidisciplinary research.Table of ContentsChapter 1. The cases highlight diverse ethical challenges and provide lessons for the various options available for policymaking. Cases are drawn from many fields, including artificial intelligence, space science, energy, data protection, professional research practice and pandemic planning. Case studies are particularly helpful with ethical issues to provide crucial context. This book reflects the ambiguity of ethical dilemmas in contemporary policymaking. Analyses reflect current debates where consensus has not yet been achieved. These cases illustrate key points made throughout the PRO-RES EU-funded project from which they arise: that ethical judgement is a fluid enterprise, where values, principles and standards must constantly adjust to new situations, new events and new research developments. This book is an indispensable aid to policymaking that addresses, and/or uses evidence from, novel research developments.Table of ContentsChapter1. • The Patient as a Person: An Integrated and Systemic Approach to Patient and Disease

Springer International Publishing AG The Patient as a Person: An Integrated and Systemic Approach to Patient and Disease

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the current era, evidence-based medicine and various supporting technologies dominate everyday clinical practice, according to a disease-centred, as opposed to patient-centred, approach. They have obviously improved the clinical management of diseases and it is therefore unreasonable to think of a medicine in which they are not considered fundamental. In fact, the strength of the new medicine should be to adapt scientific knowledge to a specific clinical case. This book therefore looks at the prospect of a new 'person' centred medicine, which stands alongside the 'disease' and 'patient' centred medicine, which pays special attention to the subjectivity of scientific knowledge and the relationship between doctor and patient. It is important to emphasise that this book is written by several hands, i.e. by experts from different fields, doctors, philosophers, architects, sociologists, art critics, physicists and engineers. This is with the intention of providing as broad a perspective as possible on the doctor-patient relationship. Due to its translational and multicultural approach to the subject, the book will be of interest to a wide readership, from medical experts to students, psychologists, philosophers and institutional actors.Table of ContentsSection 1 - Between the doctor and the patient1. • Climate Sensitive Adaptation in Health: Imperatives for India in a Developing Economy Context

Springer, India, Private Ltd Climate Sensitive Adaptation in Health: Imperatives for India in a Developing Economy Context

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book focuses on the risks that climate change poses for the health sector. It discusses the current vulnerabilities to climate-sensitive diseases, the resultant mortality and morbidity in human populations, the projected risks in connection with increasing global warming, and the options for tackling the adverse impacts of climate change. Adapting to climate change so as to effectively address the risks for and adverse impacts on the health sector requires an in-depth understanding of current deficits in health sector preparedness for climate-sensitive illnesses, as well as future plans and programs for increasing adaptive capacity and building resilience. The book situates climate and health adaptation concerns in the broader context of developing countries, providing insights that can be useful for other countries as well, helping them further their health adaptation efforts. In India, poverty and inadequate access to basic water, health and sanitation services combine with climate-related events to adversely impact health outcomes. Three case studies on the occurrence of heat stress, flooding, and extreme cyclonic events in India are presented along with a critical assessment of the level of preparedness and capacity of healthcare facilities to respond to the threats posed by climate change. The book presents the key challenges faced in reducing the risks posed to the health sector by climatic factors, and highlights the most important opportunities for promoting resilience and adaptation to achieve sustainable development.Dr. Dasgupta’s excellent book reviews the health risks of climate change, outlines an operational framework for health adaptation, and describes the socioeconomic context for adaptation in India. - Kristie L. EbiProfessor, Departments of Global Health, and Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, University of Washington, USAThis pioneering work contributes to an the understanding of the preparedness in India to manage health risks from such (climate) change on the basis of detailed data analysis, both from large national surveys and contextualized field based surveys.- Kanchan ChopraFormer Director and Professor, Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi, IndiaTrade ReviewClimate change is already causing morbidity and mortality, with risks projected to increase significantly in coming decades if no additional public health preventions are implemented. The impacts disproportionally affect populations in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Dasgupta’s excellent book Climate Sensitive Adaptation in Health: Imperatives for India in a Developing Economy Context reviews the health risks of climate change, outlines an operational framework for health adaptation, and describes the socioeconomic context for adaptation in India. Managing the current burden of climate-sensitive health outcomes, such as undernutrition, malaria, and diarrheal disease, means ensuring universal access to safe water, improved sanitation, vaccination, and child health services, and enhancing disaster risk management as extreme weather and climate events increase in frequency and intensity. Developing effective and efficient longer-term adaptation policies and programs requires capacity building at local to national levels, enhanced and sustained surveillance, early warning systems, and research and development. The book provides much needed critical and practical insights for facilitating the transition to climate-resilient health systems. - Kristie L. Ebi Professor, Departments of Global Health and Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences, University of Washington, USAThis is a forward looking volume focusing on the interface between health policy and climate change, a subject little researched in India. Climate change is expected to result in an increase in extreme events such as cyclones, floods and heat waves. This pioneering work contributes to an the understanding of the preparedness in India to manage health risks from such change on the basis of detailed data analysis, both from large national surveys and contextualized field based surveys. The in-depth analysis provides insights into interventions required in health policy in the short run and directions for an innovative design of adaptation measures in the longer run. The study, a first of its kind will be of interest to experts in health policy and researchers working on climate change, adaptation measures and sustainable development. - Kanchan ChopraFormer Director and Professor, Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi, India Table of ContentsIntroduction: Climate Risks in the Health Sector.- Climate Change Adaptation: The International Experience in Health.- Developing Economy Context for Adaptation Decision-Making.- Understanding Associations: Health, Socio-economic Wellbeing & Climate.- Analysing the Interface in Indian Plans and Policies.- Criticality of the Field: Three Case Studies.- Conclusion: Integrating Sustainable Development and Health Adaptation.

  • Springer Problems in Social Care

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book has been written primarily for general practitioners; it describes the social problems which are presented by patients to their doctors for help and advice. The aim of the book is to help the doctor manage these problems, both through his own interventions and by involving or referring the patient on to other agencies. While the more common problems have been considered in detail, those rarely encountered have been omitted. The book also concentrates on help available from non-medical sources, as these will be less familiar to the general practitioner than other medical or nursing services. There is often a close association between social difficulties and health problems, both physical and psychiatric. It is, there fore, vital that an attempt is made to meet the social needs of patients in order to promote good physical and mental health. R. H. Corney 8 Series Foreword This series of books is designed to help general practitioners. So are other books. What is unusual in this instance is their collect ive authorship; they are written by specialists working at district general hospitals. The writers derive their own experi ence from a range of cases less highly selected than those on which textbooks are traditionally based. They are also in a good position to pick out topics which they see creating difficulties for the practitioners of their district, whose personal capacities are familiar to them; and to concentrate on contexts where mistakes are most likely to occur.Table of ContentsPreface.- Series Foreword.- 1 Social problems — the key role of the doctor.- 2 The social services and sources of help for social problems.- 3 Children and young people.- 4 Problems of adult and family life.- 5 The elderly.- 6 The physically disabled.- 7 Mental illness and handicap.- 8 Housing problems.- 9 Financial, employment and legal problems.- Appendix 1 General co-ordinating bodies and sources of information.- Appendix 2 Voluntary organizations: children and young people.- Appendix 3 Voluntary organizations: adult and family life.- Appendix 4 Voluntary organizations: the elderly.- Appendix 5 Voluntary organizations: the physically disabled.- Appendix 6 Voluntary organizations: the mentally disordered.- Appendix 7 Voluntary organizations: housing problems.- Appendix 8 Voluntary organizations: financial, employment and legal problems.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAlthough we have no good definition of 'health', all people have their own ideas of whether they are healthy or not. Based on personal experience and knowledge each person comes to accept that within themselves there is a normal range of feelings and performance, departure from which could be considered abnormal or unhealthy. Despite the many amazing technological advances made over recent decades it cannot be said that access to advanced medical care is the main determining factor in the healthiness or otherwise of a society. Even in these modern times most diseases and health problems are non-curable in the strict sense, and the scope for effective prevention of disease is more limited than some enthusiasts suggest. Individuals must appreciate the limitations of modern medical care and, while seeking to use the care available to best possible effect, accept that the responsibility for trying to prevent major disease rests in their own hands. In this book we have tried to present a balanced and realistic picture of the many factors that must be taken into account if optimum disease prevention and health maintenance are to be achieved. Book SynopsisWHY WE MUST PRACTISE TRANSCULTURAL MEDICINE Health professionals and GPs should concern themselves with ethnicity, religion and culture as much as with the age, sex and social class of their patients. Transcultural medicine is the knowledge of medical and communication encounters between a doctor or health worker of one ethnic group and a patient of another. It embraces the physical, psychological and social aspects of care as well as the scientific aspects of culture, religion and ethnicity without getting involved in the politics of segregation or integration. English general practitioners and health professionals tend to regard everyone as English, and to assume that all patients have similar needs. Would that it were as simple as that! For economic reasons - based on supply and demand - the mass migration of working populations from the new Commonwealth countries, along with their dependent relatives (including their parents) to Britain took place during one decade - the 1960s. Broadly speaking, the workers were in their thirties and forties, and their dependent parents were in their fifties and sixties. All these will, of course, be 30 years older in the 1990s.Table of ContentsI: General Aspects.- 1. Avoiding communication problems.- 2. Ethnic terminology and occupations.- 3. Book SynopsisThe need to improve maternal and child health care may be the most important global health need of the remaining years of the twentieth century. It is central to the World Health Organization's (WHO) goal of Health for All by the Year 2000. The vast majority of births occur in developing countries, where maternity care is often rudimentary. The rates of maternal and infant morbidity and death for these countries are extremely high but much of the morbidity and death is preventable, even with the limited resources available for health care in many parts of the world. The resources devoted to maternal and child care should be greatly expanded, but even the most hopeful projections will leave a wide gap between human needs and available services. WHO estimates that two billion deliveries in the remaining two decades of this century will not be attended by a trained person. At a minimum, it is probable that two million of these women will die in childbirth. There were approximately 130 million births in the world in 1980.Table of ContentsSection I: High-Risk Pregnancy.- 1 Childbearing after age 35: Its effect on early perinatal outcomes.- 2 Development of an index of high-risk pregnancy.- 3 Improving obstetric care by training traditional birth attendants, Fortaleza, Brazil.- Section II: Cesarean Delivery.- 4 Cesarean delivery in selected Latin American hospitals.- 5 Deliveries after cesarean birth in two Asian university hospitals.- 6 Management of breech presentations: vaginal or abdominal delivery?.- Section III: Birth Spacing: Determinants and Consequences.- 7 Child survivorship and pregnancy spacing in Iran.- 8 Infant and child survival and contraceptive use in the closed pregnancy interval.- 9 The effect of birth interval on perinatal survival and birth weight.- Section IV: Family Planning Services in the Maternity Hospital.- 10 Desire for additional children and contraceptive plans.- 11 Postpartum sterilization in Sao Paulo State, Brazil.- 12 Access to sterilization in two hospitals in Honduras.

Book SynopsisThis book captures the evolution of consumerism in the human services. By addressing the changing roles and contributions of consumers (those working within human service organizations and systems and those working outside of those organizations and systems) the author offers an encompassing framework of consumerism. Book SynopsisAlthough social scientists and practitioners have shown an increased interest in the inclusion of trans persons in recent years, the current position of this group in the (medical/psychological/nursing) care system remains under-researched. Studies tend to merge the issues of gender diversity and sexual diversity, rendering the lived experiences of trans persons invisible. In addition, trans people often face a discriminatory environment in which they are pathologised and stigmatised as mentally ill. This anthology addresses trans people's access to healthcare from a transnational perspective, and offers courses of action to improve nursing, medical, therapeutic, and social care for trans persons. Most contributions of this book are written from a lived trans experience.

  • The Pasteurization of France

Harvard University Press The Pasteurization of France

Book SynopsisAlmost every town in France has a street named for Louis Pasteurbut did he alone stop people from spitting, persuade them to dig drains, influence them to get vaccinated? Latour makes the case that Pasteur's success depended upon a network of forces including the public hygiene movement, the medical profession, and colonial interests.Trade ReviewEverything [Latour] writes is provocative, important and worth the closest scrutiny… The radical originality and wit of Latour’s approach is hugely attractive. -- Steven Shapin * Nature *Bruno Latour [is] one of today’s most acute, if idiosyncratic, thinkers about science and society… [His] prose is often amusing… But the charm should not blind the reader to the serious intent. Mr. Latour is aiming at one of the late twentieth century’s biggest problems. He is trying to provide a way of talking about science and society that does not start from the differences between them: to break down the barrier between them that started to go up in the seventeenth century. * The Economist *Bruno Latour delights some of us and infuriates others, but either way he has, for the past decade, been one of the most brilliant and original writers about science. -- Ian Hacking * Philosophy of Science Journal *The Pasteurization of France offers everything one wants from a book. It is immensely stimulating, intelligent, and funny. Stylistically, it is dazzling, sometimes splendid. It offers a bold and light-hearted approach to problems that bedevil everybody trying to write historical accounts of scientific innovation in the wake of structural, poststructural, grammatological, sociological, anthropological, and narratological critiques of history. -- Elizabeth A. Williams * Social History of Medicine *Latour has written a complex and provocative book. His insight into the way in which Pasteur transformed social relations in France and its colonies by introducing a new agent, the microbe, is fascinating. -- Lindsay Wilson * Journal of Social History *Table of ContentsPART 1: WAR AND PEACE OF MICROBES Introduction. • Drug Dealer MD

Johns Hopkins University Press Drug Dealer MD

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLembke concludes that the prescription drug epidemic is a symptom of a faltering health care system, the solution for which lies in rethinking how health care is delivered.Trade ReviewA thought-provoking study that all healthcare professionals and patients should read. Library Journal ... a story with mythic resonance. Times Higher Education "... excellent... It's a short book, concisely written, giving plenty of examples of patients' stories while at the same time showing trends in policy and national practice." Metapsychology Drug Dealer, MD offers a fresh, comprehensive perspective on addiction and prescription drugs. The patient narratives provide compassionate, albeit sometimes extreme, examples of how the medical field has failed patients, while the data provide the facts needed to prove that this truly is a system failure rather than any one person's fault. This thought-provoking book should be a must-read for medical trainees, providers, and health policy leaders working at the forefront of addressing the prescription drug epidemic. Health Affairs Anna Lembke sheds light on the rise of prescription drug addiction in the USA, fuelled in part by the actions of doctors and the structure of the US healthcare system. London School of Economics Review of Books ... The book is written in a clear, easy-to-read style with lay readers in mind. Pharmaceutical Journal ... once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Drug Dealer, MD ... the most important medical book of the decade. -- Abigail Zuger Undark As far as I am concerned, "Drug Dealer, M.D.," in less than 200 unassuming, readable, and carefully referenced pages, may be the most important medical book of the decade for finally getting the story of this epidemic exactly right... every doctor and concerned citizen can take a first step in the right direction by reading Anna Lembke's book.Table of ContentsContents1.
