Springer, India, Private Ltd Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography in
Book SynopsisThis book aims to build concepts and create a solid foundation in the field of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for the general ophthalmologists as well as for the resident trainees and fellows. The chapters are written by leading international authorities in a style comprehensible to a broad audience. Numerous clinical pictures and SD-OCT scans help elucidate various clinical entities.OCT is the optical analog of ultrasound imaging and has emerged as a powerful imaging technique that enables non-invasive, in-vivo, high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging in retinal tissue. A new generation spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) technology has now been developed, representing a quantum leap in resolution and speed, achieving in vivo optical biopsy. i.e. the visualization of tissue architectural morphology in situ and in real time. This book encompasses the role of SD-OCT in both medical and surgical macular disorders. The book is meant coherent and comprehensive for both vitreoretinal specialists as well as general ophthalmologists.Trade Review“The main strengths of this book include an unparalleled collection of unique images with a high accuracy of interpretation, full coverage and detailed explanation of the topic by experts, and up-to-date knowledge of the field. Perhaps a weakness is minor redundancy of disease entities in different chapters by different authors. … this book is well suited for clinicians, clinical scientists, imaging experts, and anyone interested in OCT technology development.”(Igor Kozak, Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Vol. 257, 2019) Table of ContentsOptical coherence tomography: Basic principles of image analysis .- Normal Macula: Focus on IS-OS junction, external limiting membrane and choroidal thickness .- Diabetic Macular Edema.- Retinal Vein Occlusion.- Retinal Artery Occlusion .- Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration .- Wet Age-related Macular Degeneration .- Polypoidal Disease .- Optical Coherence Tomography in Age-related Macular Degeneration Pharmacotherapy .- Juxtafoveal Telangiectasia .- Central Serous Chorioretinopathy .- Idiopathic Epiretinal membranes .- Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome .- Idiopathic Macular Hole .- Surgery for Choroidal Neovascular Membrane and Macular Translocation .- Macula after Retinal Detachment Surgery .- Myopic Foveoschisis.- Retinal Degenerations and Dystrophies .- Retinal and Choroidal Inflammation .- Optic Disc Pit Maculopathy .- Retinopathy of Prematurity .- Posterior Segment Trauma .- Ocular Oncology .- Miscellaneous Retinal Disorders .- Three Dimensional Imaging in Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography .- Intraoperative OCT .- Ultra High Resolution OCT

Oxford University Press, USA Knowledge to Action EvidenceBased Health Care in Context EvidenceBased Health Care in Context
Book SynopsisHealth services can and should be improved by applying research findings about best practice. Yet, in Knowledge to Action?, the authors explore why it nevertheless proves notoriously difficult to implement change based on research evidence in the face of strong professional views and complex organizational structures. The book draws on a large body of evidence acquired in the course of nearly fifty in-depth case studies, following attempts to introduce evidence-based practice in the UK NHS over more than a decade. Using qualitative methods to study hospital and primary care settings, they are able to shed light on why some of these attempts succeeded where others faltered. By opening up the intricacies and complexities of change in the NHS, they reveal the limitations of the simplistic approaches to implementing research or introducing evidence-based health care. A unique synthesis of evidence, the book brings together data from 1,400 interviews with doctors, nurses, and managers, as well as detailed observations and documentary analysis. The authors provide an analysis, rooted in a range of theoretical perspectives, that underlines the intimate links between organizational structures and cultures and the utilization of knowledge, and draws conclusions which will be of significance for other areas of public management. Their findings have implications for the utilization of knowledge in situations where there is a professional tradition working within a politically sensitive blend of public service, managerial accountability, and technical expertise. Knowledge to Action? will be of interest to Academics, Researchers, and Advanced Students of Organizational Behaviour, Public and Health Management, and Evidence-Based Medicine; and also of particular interest to Practitioners, Clinicians, and Public Health Managers concerned with implementing change to clinical practice.Trade ReviewIt represents a breath of fresh air and contains lessons for those both producing and implementing evidence in EBM (Evidence Based Medicine). Although written as an academic book, it's readibility and numerous case studies allow it to drift close to being a 'how to' manual for implementing EBM. British Medicine Journal (BJM) Based on more than 50 studies of attempts to implement evidence based health care in different NHS settings, it provides a comprehensive and thoughtful review... Taylor & Francis Ltd Pioneers in Public Health
Book SynopsisThe public health movement involved numerous individuals who made the case for change and put new practices into place. However despite a growing interest in how we understand history to inform current evidence-based practice, there is no book focusing on our progressive pioneers in public health and environmental health. This book seeks to fill that gap. It examines carefully selected public and environmental health pioneers who made a real difference to the UKâs health, some with international influence. Many of these pioneers were criticised in their life-times, yet they had the strength of character to know what they were doing was fundamentally right and persevered, often against many odds. Including chapters on: Thomas Fresh John Snow Duncan of Liverpool Margaret McMillan George Cadbury Christopher Addison Margery Spring Rice and others. This book will help readers place pioneers in a wider context and to make more sense of their academic and practitioner work today; how evidence (and what was historically understood by it) underpins modern day practice; and how these visionary pioneers developed their ideas into practice, some not fully appreciated until after their own deaths. Pioneers in Public Health sets the tone for a renewed focus on research into evidence-based public and environmental health, which has become subject of growing international interest in recent years. Trade Review'[a] timely and inspiring book' Environmental Health News"The authors of the 12 contributions to this readable book were asked to write about a pioneer for whom they had great regard, with an overall theme of examining how history informs current evidence-based policy. The result is an overdue focus on the important role environmental health plays in shaping modern themes in the UK and elsewhere, as well as giving insight into the profound effects on beliefs and actions that arise from the era, values and attitudes into which we are born … (Chadwick’s) well documented work is dealt with in Stewart’s excellent introduction, while the chapters cover lesser known pioneers... Even if you know about some or all of these pioneers, you will find new insights and fascinating facts about their lives and works. Stewart’s conclusion to these inspiring accounts is that the battles for public health resonates with our contemporary activities and that some supposedly ‘old fashioned’ views are more progressive, radical and forward thinking than those held by many who are in a position to do something about public health today’. This is a great book not only for students and new professionals but also for environmental health and public health practitioners. It will be invaluable for teaching. Stewart cites the historian Virginia Berridge’s observation that ‘history needs to be part of the process of evidence-based policy’. This book will convince you of this view and may help to develop the next generation of reformers and policy makers." Taylor & Francis Ltd What do I say next Everyday Mental Health
Book SynopsisA significant problem experienced by some GPs and many trainees and other primary care health professionals is the challenge of completing a useful and safe consultation with patients with mental health problems within the constraints of a standard-length appointment. These challenges may arise from a lack of specific expertise in this area, poor training in the relevant skills and, perhaps, the attitude that there is not much that the primary care practitioner can do to help. This new book focuses on enhancing the repertoire of communication skills available for mental health consultation, providing a range of tools and techniques drawn from accepted models, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), transactional analysis (TA), motivational interviewing and acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), illustrating how to apply these within a typical 10- to 12-minute primary care consultation.Key features:enhances the repertoire of communication and cons

Taylor & Francis Value Management in Healthcare
Book SynopsisOur current healthcare system is broken. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) predicts healthcare costs could increase from 6% to 14% of GDP by 2060. The cause of this increase is due to (1) a global aging population, (2) growing affluence, (3) rise in chronic diseases, and (4) better-informed patients, all of which raises the demand for healthcare. In 2006, Michael Porter and Elizabeth Teisberg authored the book Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results. In it, they present their analysis of the root causes plaguing the healthcare industry and make the case for why providers, suppliers, consumers, and employers should move toward a patient-centric approach that optimizes value for patients. According to Porter, value for patients should be the overarching principle for our broken system. Given the current state of global healthcare, there is urgency to achieve widespread adoption of this new approach. The updated second edition of this book discusses two major issues driving the importance of value-based care. The first is the emergence of artificial intelligence, which has the potential to significantly impact and enhance value-based healthcare in several ways such as delivering personalized medicine, predictive analytics for patient outcomes, and improving population health management. The second issue is why value-based care continues to struggle in scaling. While value-based healthcare has shown promise in improving patient outcomes and controlling costs, there have been challenges in implementation such as transitioning from the traditional fee-for-service model, data interoperability issues, and limited standardization of health outcomes. These challenges do not necessarily mean that value-based healthcare has failed. Instead, they highlight the complexities of the work involved and the need to follow a process as provided in this book. The intent of this book is to equip all healthcare delivery organizations with a guide for putting the value-based concept into practice. With updated material and case studies, this book defines the practice of value-based healthcare as value management. The book explores Mr. Porterâs value equation (Value = Costs/Outcomes), which is central to value management, and provides a step-by-step process for how to calculate the components of this equation. On the outcomes side, the book presents the value realization framework, which translates organizational mission and strategy into a comprehensive set of performance measures and contextualizes the measures for healthcare delivery.
