Book SynopsisEdited by Michael Hoyt, PhD and Moshe Talmon, PhD. Could a single therapy session be not only helpful but even sufficient for some people? Numerous clinical examples and the research evidence support a definite "Yes!" Drawing from multiple theoretical approaches and cultural contexts, this is the book to read if you want to learn ways to help people as soon as possible - maybe even in one visit. It teaches you to be present in each and every session and offers you various ways of empowering your clients in the here and now. It includes contributions from over twenty experts including Ernest Rossi, Steven Andreas, Dawson Church, Chris Iveson, Douglas Flemons, James Gustafson, Rubin Battino, Bradford Keeney, Jeffrey Young, Arnold Slive, Monte Bobele, Michele Ritterman, Moshe Talmon, Michael Hoyt Bob Rosenbaum and others.Trade ReviewReviewed by Jon Carlson, PsyD, EdD, ABPP, Distinguished Professor, Governors State University. Carefully crafted single session interventions can produce significant and enduring results. Drs. Hoyt and Talmon and their confreres, all experts in this art form, show the reader how to consistently accomplish immediate psychotherapeutic results. Reviewed by Nicholas A. Cummings, PhD, ScD, President, Cummings Foundation for Behavioral Health, and Former President, American Psychological Association. Hoyt and Talmon and their colleagues have not only demonstrated the effectiveness of brief therapy, but theirs is a timely answer to psychotropic medications which seldom are either appropriate or effective. Reviewed by Donald H. Meichenbaum, PhD, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and Research Director of the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment, Miami, Florida. This book will force you to think in a new way about psychotherapy and about the efficacy of single session therapy (SST). It is essential reading for anyone who wants to learn about what can be accomplished in one visit. Any reservations you may hold about SST are thoroughly addressed. This excellent book is filled with a wide variety of case studies, empirical reviews, practical guidelines and personal anecdotes of leaders in the field of SST and walk-in clinics. Kudos to Hoyt and Talmon for bringing this timely collection together. Reviewed by Haim Omer, PhD, Professor, School of Psychological Sciences, Tel-Aviv University. This volume does an excellent job of showing how the single session interventions can be applied not only in themselves, but also as part of a more general mental health policy, helping to reduce wait lists, give an immediate response to immediate needs, and serve as a healthy counterpart to our tendency to think that in therapy, more is always better. Reviewed by Tal Ben Shahar, PhD, international bestselling author of Choose the Life You Want. In a world where we are constantly reminded of the ever-darkening state of mental health, this book provides a ray of hope. The research on single session therapy demonstrates that positive change is not only possible, it is also accessible to all.

Book SynopsisThe Squiggle Foundation has for many years produced Winnicott Studies, a journal which celebrates and reconsiders the work of Donald Winnicott, the groundbreaking pediatrician and psychoanalyst. This is the first time that a monograph has been produced by Winnicott Studies, with the aim of concentrating on just one aspect of his thought. It focuses on one of Winnicott's most enduring and resonant formulations, the True and False Self.Winnicott's classic paper "Ego distortion in terms of True and False Self" is reprinted here together with contributions from some of the most eminent figures in psychotherapy. Val Richards presents some implications for clinical work and thinking; Katherine Cameron discusses the worth of Winnicott's formulation to Lacanians; Francis Tustin relates it to her work with autistic patients; Ken Wright considers its impact on one's personal selfhood; and Nina Coltart uses the insights from philosophy and Buddhism to put our ideas of the self in an entirely new light. Together, these papers make this book indispensable for anyone interested in Winnicott's work.Trade ReviewThe Squiggle Foundation has for many years produced Winnicott Studies, a journal which celebrates and reconsiders the work of Donald Winnicott, the groundbreaking pediatrician and psychoanalyst. Book SynopsisPerson-Centred Practice, the journal of the British Association for the Person-Centred Approach (BAPCA), was established in 1993 and published twice a year until 2004. With all but the latest issues out of print but in demand, PCCS Books in association with BAPCA published this selection of over thirty papers, representing the breadth of international material published in this journal.Trade ReviewThis splendid book should do much to embolden person-centred practitioners so that they can enter the dialogical battle ground with renewed confidence and no little pride in the tradition which they represent. The book's very existence points to a thriving professional association, a flourishing journal and a successful publishing house primarily committed to the advancement of person-centred therapy and its associated activities. This is no mean springboard for the approach at the beginning of the new millennium and we do well to remind ourselves of the strength inherent in all three accomplishments. • PCCS Books Family, Self and Psychotherapy: A Person-Centred Perspective

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFamily, Self and Psychotherapy is a comprehensive person-centred look at the family as the essential element of society, and is valuable reading for professionals and volunteers working with families, children and individuals. Explores our human need to be inter-connected and its implications for both individual and family therapy. The volume is informally divided into three sections. The first section deals with the centrality of the family to our species as a whole and to us as individuals. The next addresses the optimistic philosophical foundations of the person-centred approach: the tapestry of the self and its core drive towards psychological well-being. The last section - the heart of the book - deals with the principles and pragmatics of the person-centred approach to working with individuals and families. Gaylin asserts that therapeutic relationships are more liely to thrive when viewed from this positive perspective especially when therapy operates within the individual's family context.Trade ReviewHe writes about the very essence of the Person-Centred Approach with consummate ease and strolls up to what could have been a real problem with this book: can you have a Person-Centred Approach to the family? His step scarcely falters as he begins to outline one of the central themes of his book (and of all our work?) which is that our individuality is achieved/defined/made visible in our relationships and, to borrow a Natiello-ism in our 'connections'... This book is like an oyster. It contains many, many pearls. • PCCS Books An Uneasy Dwelling: The Story of the Philadelphia

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisProviding places of asylum has been at the heart of the Philadelphia Association's endeavours for more than 40 years. Hundreds of men and women, whether formally designated 'mentally ill' or experiencing serious emotional distress to the point where they can no longer cope, have found in our houses a haven, a place where, in the company of others, they are allowed to go through whatever they have to go through, in their own time and in their own way, free from the well-meaning interventions of psychiatry or family. The most famous of these was undoubtedly the first, Kingsley Hall, which opened in 1965 and which has come to have an almost iconic status in the world of what has come to be called critical (or less accurately anti-) psychiatry. When Kingsley Hall closed in 1970 (when the lease expired) the PA's attempt at providing a radically different approach to the treatment of those in states of severe emotional distress did not come to an end, as many people seem to believe. Rather it took different forms and has continued to this day.The weekend that the PA moved out of Kingsley Hall, a new community opened and more than 15 houses have been run under our auspices since and several hundred people have spent some time in them. The houses have been an inspiration to many others too. Despite our longevity and the radically different nature of our project, surprisingly little has been written about our endeavours in this respect, a few book chapters and articles, and an unpublished PhD thesis. The Philadelphia Association (PA) has never been good at self-promotion. In part this was an understandable reaction to the period when the PA was most closely identified with one of its founders, the highly public figure of RD Laing, but it has meant that what we do - which is arguably unique in its field - has felt at times like a guilty secret. This book is an attempt to correct that.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction 1. Kingsley Hall: 'Something was shown there' 2. The community network, 1970-2006 3. • PCCS Books The Life of Things: Therapy and the Soul of the World

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat would psychology look like if we took the planet seriously? Ecopsychologists are, on the whole, more interested in our relations with the earth than our relations with each other. They find little inspiration in conventional psychology, and generally have little to say about individual counselling and psychotherapy, finding it at best irrelevant and at worst a wasteful indulgence in a situation which demands a focus on stopping the damage we are doing to the earth. Meanwhile, counsellors continue to work as though counselling is essentially an exercise carried out in private between two individuals, irrespective of our place in the wider ecosystem. These two points of view rarely meet in discussions of the human predicament, but they are brought together lucidly and coherently in The Life of Things. Bernie Neville takes both personal counselling and the planet seriously. He gets his inspiration from philosophers and psychologists who have puzzled over our relationship to the planet and each other. Arne Naess, Alfred North Whitehead, Jean Gebser, Carl Rogers and Carl Jung have had a significant influence on his thinking. These five thinkers all have enthusiastic followers, but rarely do they talk to each other. The Life of Things may be unique in fitting all five between the same covers. It is unique also in its achievement of dealing with these rich, diverse and complex ideas with eloquence and clarity.Trade ReviewA vital antidote to the oversimplifications of many current approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. Bernie Neville rescues the great Carl Rogers from the clutches of psycho-technologists (on the one hand) and eco-romantics (on the other), and redirects us to the necessary complexities and ambiguities of the counsellor's roles. Bernie Neville is that rare sage: one who can write clearly about subtle things without doing damage to the subtlety. This book is a joy to read - and a provocation to think more deeply. Guy Claxton, Author of The Wayward Mind: An Intimate History of the Unconscious This is a stunningly original book that makes bold and imaginative connections among seminal thinkers born millennia apart. Neville expands the boundaries of person-centered discourse to include new intellectual company ... Rogers' transformative vision of human consciousness as a manifestation of an evolutionary trajectory and of person-centered encounter as site of cosmic alchemy is lovingly and fiercely reanimated here. Out of stock

Book SynopsisAn honest and accessible insight into the often closed world of psychotherapy. This book is a memoir of the author's professional life as a psychologist and psychotherapist. It shows his progression from a hard-nosed behaviour therapist with a strong commitment to science to a psychodynamic therapist with an interest in narrative. Along the way he shows the way the main schools of psychotherapy (behavioural, cognitive, psychodynamic) work, drawing on case material from his professional practice. He shows the mistakes he made and the lessons he eventually learned from his patients. His focus on clinical cases enables readers to see psychotherapy in operation and get drawn into the ups and downs of trying to help some fascinating and often tricky people who rarely conform to what is expected of them. The book is free of jargon and can be enjoyed without any prior knowledge of psychology or psychotherapy. It is designed to entertain and inform the general readership about the mysterious world of psychotherapy, what goes on behind the consulting room door. It will be of particular interest to the increasing number of people who encounter psychotherapy either through their own experience of seeking help or the experiences of family and friends or through reading of popular books such as those of Oliver James and Irving Yalom. It should also prove invaluable for those interested in training as a clinical psychologist, counsellor or psychotherapist.Table of ContentsAUTHOR’S NOTE PREFACE SECTION I: GETTING MY HANDS DIRTY CHAPTER ONE - Beginnings CHAPTER TWO - A suitable case for treatment CHAPTER THREE - Getting my hands dirty CHAPTER FOUR - How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb? • Momentum Press A Systematic and Integrative Model for Mental Health Assessment and Treatment Planning

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book sets the stage by providing a clear, systematic, and integrative model for mental health assessment and treatment planning that can be used in a variety of clinical settings, with a diverse adult clinical population. The authors advocate for the importance of considering all aspects of evidence-based practice (i.e., best available research, clinician's expertise, and experience, as well as clients' preferences and idiosyncrasies) when conducting assessments and delivering psychological treatments. Special attention is also given to the interdisciplinary aspects of delivering mental health care in today's fast-paced environments. If you are a seasoned clinician or a beginner therapist, you will surely find this book useful because it provides a general map that can be used regardless of your specific theoretical orientations. The applied nature of the content makes it easy and valuable for readers who wish to apply psychology integration to their own practice. Case vignettes have been developed to help readers gain a better understanding on how to apply the integrative interprofessional framework into their practice. Finally, professors and supervisors will also find this book worthwhile as the authors incorporated a chapter on the supervision and evaluation of assessment and treatment planning competencies.
