Springer Verlag, Singapore The Art of Co-Creation: A Guidebook for
Book SynopsisThis book illustrates how to design and implement co-creation, a powerful form of collective creativity that harnesses the potential of teams and can generate breakthrough insights. Skilled leaders and facilitators can utilize this approach to unleash the creative potential of their organizations. Drawing from years of applied research, the authors bring together insights from the fields of design and organizational development into an evocative and pragmatic “how-to” guidebook. Taking a human-centred rather than process oriented perspective, the book argues that experience design separates true co-creation from other forms of collective efforts and design thinking. Collective moments of creative insight emerge from the space between, an experience of flow and synchronicity from which new ideas spring forth. How to create and hold this space is the secret to the art of co-creation. Collective breakthroughs require stakeholders to undergo a journey from the world of their existing expertise into spaces of new potential. It requires leaders moving from a position of dominating space to holding the space for others, and developing core capacities such as empathy and awareness so that teams can engage each other co-creatively. This book uncovers the secrets of this journey, enabling process designers to develop more effective programs. Columbia University Press The Suicidal Person
Book SynopsisKonrad Michel, a leading psychiatrist and acclaimed expert, draws on decades of experience to offer necessary new ways of understanding—and preventing—suicide.Trade ReviewCompelling, compassionate, and comprehensive. Not only is Konrad Michel’s book a must read for clinicians and researchers but it is written so accessibly that anyone affected by suicide will benefit from The Suicidal Person. Michel takes the reader on a journey of his career, what he has learned, the development of his innovative treatment but also his experiences of loss, including the devastating loss of his son to suicide. An incredible synthesis of forty years of research and practice. -- Rory O'Connor, University of Glasgow, author of When It Is Darkest: Why People Die by Suicide and What We Can Do to Prevent ItIn his extraordinary book, The Suicidal Person, Dr. Konrad Michel has written a unique volume that fully displays his decades of clinical acumen, innovation in clinical research, leadership in the field, as well as his humanity and wisdom. Dr. Michel has an uncanny ability to integrate noteworthy clinical insights and scientific truths, while writing with a common touch that makes this book both readable and relatable. This text is relevant to a remarkably wide audience from clinical professionals, to researchers, to people who struggle with suicide, and to those who are touched by suicide either directly or indirectly. This book is a treasure—a gift actually—to anyone who cares about the human condition, the perils of suffering, the promise of recovery and life. -- David A. Jobes, professor of psychology and director of the Suicide Prevention Laboratory, The Catholic University of America, Washington DCDr. Michel offers a rare blend of clinical wisdom, poignant personal experience, empirical evidence, and essential practicality in a compelling volume that will prove invaluable to clinicians assessing and treating those struggling with suicidality. This book represents the distillation of three-plus decades of clinical work and applied research into an easy to understand and deliver model for the care of those questioning the value of life. Most importantly, it’s an approach that recognizes the enduring vulnerability of being human, our unavoidable connections to one another, and that compassion is the necessary foundation to reducing the tragedy of suicide. Michel’s practical and empirically informed approach is applicable across all clinical contexts and should be a must-read for anyone working with suicidal individuals. -- M. David Rudd, Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and President Emeritus, University of MemphisThe Suicidal Person chronicles Konrad Michel's lifelong quest to find a new way of helping self-destructive patients. Trained as both empirical scientist and empathic psychotherapist, Dr. Michel has over a five-decade career sought out the most brilliant thinkers in contemporary suicidology and joined with them to reconceptualize the suicidal mind. He integrates both biological and psychological perspectives in a deceptively simple treatment method that emphasizes the therapist's intensely respectful curiosity about the suicidal patient's experience and their collaboration as equals in developing a shared understanding of that experience. Dr. Michel's humble yet powerful approach offers patients liberation from the life-threatening vortex of suicidality. -- J. Michael Bostwick, professor of psychiatry, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and ScienceThe Suicidal Person is a remarkable hybrid of autobiographical, scientific, clinical, and theoretical gems based on Dr. Michel's decades of experience. It will deepen your understanding of how people can become suicidal—and how you can help. Suicidologists, clinicians, psychotherapy students, loved ones, and people who themselves have suicidal thoughts will all benefit from learning about Dr. Michel’s journey and his compassionate, client-centered treatment for people in danger of suicide. -- Stacey Freedenthal, author of Helping the Suicidal Person: Tips and Techniques for Professionals and Loving Someone with Suicidal Thoughts: What Family, Friends, and Partners Can Say and DoOffers much research-based, sound advice for clinicians on how to engage patients more effectively, making therapy more helpful in stemming the suicide tide. * Choice Reviews, the American Library Association (ALA) *Table of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction1. Harvard University Press A History of Data Visualization and Graphic
Book SynopsisStatistical graphing was born in the seventeenth century as a scientific tool, but it quickly escaped all disciplinary bounds. Today graphics are ubiquitous in daily life. Michael Friendly and Howard Wainer detail the history of data visualization and argue that it has not only helped us solve problems, but it has also changed the way we think.Trade ReviewThe invention of graphs and charts was a much quieter affair than that of the telescope, but these tools have done just as much to change how and what we see. -- Hannah Fry * New Yorker *An indispensable account of how important practitioners of data visualizations write the history of their field. -- Crystal Lee * Information & Culture *We live in an era of data dependence—never before have graphic representations of data been as essential and sought after as at this moment…There has not been a publication of this scope on the evolution of graphic representation of qualitative and quantitative data since Funkhouser’s work…Scholars, practitioners, lovers of statistics and data visualization, and anyone interested in understanding the methods and techniques of today will benefit from understanding the innovations that brought us to where we are. -- María del Mar Navarro * Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation *A thoughtful and well-written introduction to the world of data visualization and its history. -- Bill Satzer * MAA Reviews *An intellectually fascinating book…The audience for this book is wide. It would be useful to professionals and to professors in many departments such as psychology, sociology, economics, biology, physics, and any department that uses graphs to display quantitative information. It is a book to broaden your knowledge and offer interesting asides for lectures and meetings…Consult it frequently to learn of the stories of the developers of the many graphic methods we use today. -- Malcolm James Ree * Personnel Psychology *A marvel of research scholarship…This is the sort of book that one can browse and sample in bite-size chunks as the mood seizes, encountering curious delights while doing so. -- Bert Gunter * Significance *A masterly study of graphic innovations, their context, and their scientific use. This brilliant book, without equivalent, is an indispensable read. -- Gilles Palsky, coauthor of An Atlas of Geographical WondersFriendly and Wainer are the Watson and Crick of statistical graphics, showing us the history of the DNA structure that is the code of life for innovative visualizations. -- Ben Shneiderman, founder of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab, University of MarylandData expertise is a fundamental prerequisite for success in our digital age. But exactly how, and when, have we learned to draw conclusions from data? For decades, Michael Friendly and Howard Wainer have been studying how data has informed decision-making, through visualization and statistical analysis. Replete with mesmerizing visual examples, this book is an eye-opening distillation of their research. -- Sandra Rendgen, author of History of Information GraphicsMichael Friendly and Howard Wainer have given us a wonderful history of the dazzling field of data visualization. They bring new life to ancient death statistics and describe the artistic poetry used to display numbers. An intriguing story of how we have learned to communicate data of all types. -- Stephen M. Stigler, author of The Seven Pillars of Statistical WisdomTwo of the most distinguished scholars of data visualization give us a glimpse of ancient attempts to quantify the world, before revealing the century-long revolution that led to the invention of modern statistics and many of the graphical methods we use today. I learned a lot from this book, and I think you will too. -- Alberto Cairo, author of How Charts Lie: Getting Smarter about Visual InformationFriendly and Wainer demonstrate the amazing progress that has been made in data graphics over the past two hundred years. Everybody does it, buTrade Review"Throughout his 50-book career, Tilly liked to squint hard at social life and find simple patterns. [In Credit and Blame] his undogmatic schematizing could reshape our judgments about what might have been obvious to begin with."--Alexander Star, New York Times Book Review "Drawing upon sources as disparate as Dostoyevski, Darwin, water-cooler conversations and truth commissions, Tilly illustrated how assigning credit and blame stems from and redefines 'relations between the creditor and the credited, the blamer, and the blamed.' Tilly astutely analyzes how people accept credit and society assesses blame, and the commonalities between the two. University of Minnesota Press The Affect Lab: The History and Limits of
Book SynopsisExamines how our understanding of emotion is shaped by the devices we use to measure it Since the late nineteenth century, psychologists have used technological forms of media to measure and analyze emotion. In The Affect Lab, Grant Bollmer examines the use of measurement tools such as electrical shocks, photography, video, and the electroencephalograph to argue that research on emotions has confused the physiology of emotion with the tools that define its inscription. Bollmer shows that the psychological definitions of emotion have long been directly shaped by the physical qualities of the devices used in laboratory research. To investigate these devices, The Affect Lab examines four technologies related to the history of psychology in North America: spiritualist toys at Harvard University, serial photography in early American psychological laboratories, experiments on “psychopaths” performed with an instrument called an Offner Dynograph, and the development of the “electropsychometer,” or “E-Meter,” by Volney Mathison and L. Ron Hubbard. Challenging the large body of humanities research surrounding affect theory, The Affect Lab identifies an understudied problem in formulations of affect: how affect is a construction inseparable from the techniques and devices used to identify and measure it. Ultimately, Bollmer offers a new critique of affect and affect theory, demonstrating how deferrals to psychology and neuroscience in contemporary theory and philosophy neglect the material of experimental, scientific research. Retail e-book files for this title are screen-reader friendly with images accompanied by short alt text and/or extended descriptions.Trade Review "Moving compellingly through a series of instruments drawn from the histories of experimental psychology, psychiatric photography, and spiritualism, Grant Bollmer provides an important materialist rebuke to the liberatory strain in affect theory, which frequently treats affect as ‘an eternal truth of the body rather than a momentary fragment.’"—David Parisi, author of Archaeologies of Touch: Interfacing with Haptics from Electricity to Computing "The Affect Lab argues that beneath affect theory lies media. Far from being natural or biological—and, most fundamentally, far from being universal—affect is the product of the concrete technical operations that are necessary to access it in the first place. By challenging affect theory to examine its own technical basis, The Affect Lab will reboot the field for our times and, in the process, fundamentally change our views of how affect operates and the roles it plays in lived experience."—Mark B. Several interviews with well-known soccer coaches, managers and former players complement these findings from psychology and sport science. It deals with phenomena such as the home field advantage, creativity on the field, extreme emotional situations, the limits of visual perception, group dynamics and modern leadership. In order to understand this field, the book also explores its intersections with race, class, gender, sexuality, age, disability, ethnicity, migration and beyond. In addition to thinking through terminology and history, this book will aim to unpack three key myths which often guide Fat Studies, showing that:1) fat is a meaningful site of oppression intersected with other forms of discrimination and hatred;2) to be fat is not a choice (but also that a discussion of choice is itself problematic); and3) fat cannot be unambiguously correlated with a lack of health.Fat Studies: The Basics is a lively and accessible foundation for s

San Francisco Chronicle'… In this massive study Nussbaum takes the perennial boxing match between thought and perception to a brilliant new register … it has the feel of a major achievement.' Publishers Weekly'… a brave and civilized book. And at a time when we need above all an understanding of political emotions its subject could not be more welcome.' The New Republic'… unites in an original and altogether personal way the philosophy of the emotions with the texture of life and the experience of art … The book shows an impressive familiarity with the classics, with psychology, with anthropology, with the law and with its own version of psychoanalysis.' Los Angeles Times Book Review'[Nussbaum] is among America's most prolific and prominent public intellectuals, with many causes to her credit, to all of which she brings extraordinary scholarly and liberal credentials … it is a brave and civilized book. And at a time when we need above all an understanding of political emotions, its subject could not be more welcome.' The New Republic'It is an awesomely ambitious and unabashedly personal book. It contains … three elegant studies of the role of the emotions in human flourishing … this is a magnificent book … this book stands apart, if only as a kind of culmination of her work so far.' Mind'Several disciplinary establishments are bound to be shaken by this book, and most of all the scholars, scientists, and writers in the always emergent field of human emotion … almost all will be amazed by the extent to which Nussbaum can sweep feeling up into thinking and judging.' Common Knowledge'… it is fitting that perhaps the most considered recent contribution to the field has been made by Martha C. Nussbaum, a philosopher whose considerable powers of thought have brought some much needed clarity and depth of thought into this complex and controversial field … appreciate the breadth of scholarship, the awesome ability to synthesize ideas from a range of disciplines without becoming facile, the elegance of the argument and the clarity of the writing. It is a book to read slowly, with care, and with plenty of pauses for reflection … she is keen to develop a social theory of emotion, which is a major contribution to the is debate.' Auto/Biography'… thrilling and satisfying.' A. M. C. Casiday, University of Durham'… an awesome tour de force of philosophical inquiry … some marvelous intellectual architecture …'. getAbstractTable of ContentsPart I. Need and Recognition: 1. Book SynopsisPersonality psychology is a field devoted to the study of all that it means to be human, and with Personality Psychology 8e, Larsen and Buss capture the excitement of the discipline. This text is unique in two significant ways. First, rather than arranging their text around the traditional grand theories of personality, Larsen and Buss instead used a framework of six domains of knowledge about personality functioning: the dispositional domain, the biological domain, the intrapsychic domain, the cognitive-experiential domain, the societal and cultural domain, and the adjustment domain. Research in the field reinforces the fact that these domains effectively organize the key theories within personality psychology. In addition to the six major organizing themes, Personality Psychology 8e also differs from other personality texts in the importance placed on culture, gender, and biology, areas of personality scholarship that have shown substantial growth in recenTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction to Personality Psychology Chapter 2: Personality Assessment, Measurement, and Research Design Part 1 The Dispositional DomainChapter 3: Traits and Trait TaxonomiesChapter 4: Theoretical and Measurement Issues in Trait PsychologyChapter 5: Personality Dispositions over Time: Stability, Coherence, and Change Part 2 The Biological DomainChapter 6: Genetics and Personality Chapter 7: Physiological Approaches to Personality Chapter 8: Evolutionary Perspectives on Personality Part 3 The Intrapsychic DomainChapter 9: Psychoanalytic Approaches to Personality Chapter 10: Psychoanalytic Approaches: Contemporary Issues Chapter 11: Motives and Personality Part 4 The Cognitive/Experiential DomainChapter 12: Cognitive Topics in Personality Chapter 13: Emotion and Personality Chapter 14: Approaches to the Self Part 5 The Social and Cultural DomainChapter 15: Personality and Social Interaction Chapter 16: Sex, Gender, and Personality Chapter 17: Culture and Personality Part 6 The Adjustment DomainChapter 18: Stress, Coping, Adjustment, and Health Chapter 19: Disorders of Personality ConclusionChapter 20: Summary and Future Directions
