Psychology: the self, ego, identity, personality Books
ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon The Sarcophagus of Identity: Tribalism,
Book SynopsisGiven the increasing centrality of identity to contemporary politics, James Skellys book provides a critical and useful analysis of the dominant and problematic conceptual bases for self and identity. Inspired in part by his lawsuit against the US Secretary of Defense while serving as an active duty military officer, Skelly argues that our use of language in the construction of identities is unwitting, unreflective, and has engendered horrific consequences for tens of millions of humans. In contrast, he demonstrates our need to overcome sectarian modes of thinking and to engage in much deeper forms of solidarity with others by foregrounding a species identity. This book offers not only an academic reflection on the concept of identity but one that delves into the nature of the self and identity by drawing on Skelly's concrete experience of attempting to present a self-identity opposed to war in the face of the political, psychological, religious, and legal arguments put forth in a year-long legal battle with the United States government. One consequence is that Skelly argues that to create a new and more pacific human sensibility we must help ourselves and others to gain sovereignty over our social worlds and the definition of 'who we are', by arming individuals with the tools necessary to overcome the definitions and categorisations we are subjected to in the construction of traditional notions of 'identity'.

Daimon Verlag Hands: Aspects of Opposition & Complementarity in
Book SynopsisPsychochirology -- the study of personality structure by means of reading the hands -- can reveal the present psychological situation, parental characteristics and influences, inherent and acquired patterns of behaviour and capabilities, inner conflicts of all natures and their potential for integration, as well as possibilities for growth. Each finger and mount portrays a different masculine and feminine archetypal figure, and they are always in flux. Getting to know them becomes a means of self-awareness, and in a therapeutic setting can also be a diagnostic tool. The hand holds our individual myth like a personal key: how can knowledge of this key lead to our own transformation?

Daimon Verlag Personality: The Individation Process in the
Book SynopsisThe world-famous psychiatrist and pioneer of the unconscious, Carl Gustav Jung, never produced a systematic treatment of his own work -- he was always moving forward. And so it became the life-task of his assistant-of-many-decades, Carl Alfred Meier, to gather and present in detail the various aspects of his far-reaching discoveries. This final volume of Meier''s work addresses the human personality in its encounters between consciousness and the unconscious, a process referred to as individuation. In describing such encounters, the author extensively explains the idea of Jung''s psychological types.

Springer The Science of Well-Being: The Collected Works of Ed Diener
Book SynopsisMajor Theoretical Questions Theories about subjective well-being have grown over the past several decades, but have been re ned only slowly as adequate data have been compiled to test them. We can characterize the theories describing happiness along several dimensions. The rst dimension is whether the theory places the locus of happiness in external conditions such as income and status, as many sociological theories do, or within the attitudes and temperament of the individual, as many psychological theories do. Some have maintained that people adapt to all circumstances over time, so that only individual personality matters for producing happiness, whereas others believe that economicandothersocietalfactorsarethedominantforcesinproducingwell-being. Throughout my writings there is a mix of both the internal and external factors that in uence well-being. A second dimension that characterizes scholarship on well-being is the issue of whether the factors affecting well-being are relative or absolute. That is, are there standards used by people at all times and places in judging their lives and in reacting to events? Or are standards dependent on what other people possess, on expec- tions, andonadaptationlevelsbasedonpastcircumstances?Again, thereisevidence supporting the role of both universal and relative standards. People around the globe are probably in uenced by common factors such as friendship versus loneliness, but even these universal in uences on happiness are probably subject to some degree of comparison depending on what the person is used to and what others have. However, some factors might be much more comparative than other in uences, as Hsee, Yang, Li, and Shen (in press) have described.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: “The Science of Well-Being, is a potpourri of papers—literature reviews and theory pieces—that overview the field that Diener helped establish. … Certainly academic researchers interested in well-being will find them extremely useful. … The audience should extend beyond research psychologists and include policy makers as well as interested members of the general public. … the collected works of Ed Diener are timely, impressive, and useful.” (Christopher Peterson, PsycCRITIQUES, Vol. 54 (50), 2009)Table of Contents1. Springer Institutions, Emotions, and Group Agents: Contributions to Social Ontology
Book SynopsisThe contributions gathered in this volume present the state of the art in key areas of current social ontology. They focus on the role of collective intentional states in creating social facts, and on the nature of intentional properties of groups that allow characterizing them as responsible agents, or perhaps even as persons. Many of the essays are inspired by contemporary action theory, emotion theory, and theories of collective intentionality. Another group of essays revisits early phenomenological approaches to social ontology and accounts of sociality that draw on the Hegelian idea of recognition. This volume is organized into three parts. First, the volume discusses themes highlighted in John Searle’s work and addresses questions concerning the relation between intentions and the deontic powers of institutions, the role of disagreement, and the nature of collective intentionality. Next, the book focuses on joint and collective emotions and mutual recognition, and then goes on to explore the scope and limits of group agency, or group personhood, especially the capacity for responsible agency. The variety of philosophical traditions mirrored in this collection provides readers with a rich and multifaceted survey of present research in social ontology. It will help readers deepen their understanding of three interrelated and core topics in social ontology: the constitution and structure of institutions, the role of shared evaluative attitudes, and the nature and role of group agents.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements.- Chapter 1. Springer Handbook of the Sociology of Mental Health
Book SynopsisThis second edition of the Handbook of the Sociology of Mental Health features theory-driven reviews of recent research with a comprehensive approach to the investigation of the ways in which society shapes the mental health of its members and the lives of those who have been diagnosed as having a mental illnessThe award-winning Handbook is distinctive in its focus on how the organization and functioning of society influences the occurrence of mental disorder and its consequences. A core issue that runs throughout the text concerns the differential distribution of mental illness across various social strata, defined by status characteristics such as gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and age. The contributions to this volume shed light on the social, cultural, and economic factors that explain why some social groups have an elevated risk of disorder. They also address the social repercussions of mental disorder for individuals, including stigmatization within the larger society, and for their families and social networks. The second edition of this seminal volume includes substantial updates to previous chapters, as well as seven new chapters on: -The Individual’s Experience of Mental Illness.--The Medicalization of Mental Illness.---Age, Aging, and Mental Health.- -Religion and Mental Health.- -Neighborhoods and Mental Health.- -Mental Health and the Law—and Public Beliefs about Mental Illness. Springer Why Knowing What To Do Is Not Enough: A Realistic
Book SynopsisThis open access book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between “knowing” and “doing” in view of self-reliance, which is more and more often expected of citizens. In today’s society, people are expected to take responsibility for their own lives and be self-reliant. This is no easy feat. They must be on constant high alert in areas of life such as health, work and personal finances and, if things threaten to go awry, take appropriate action without further ado. What does this mean for public policy? Policymakers tend to assume that the government only needs to provide people with clear information and that, once properly informed, they will automatically do the right thing. However, it is becoming increasingly obvious that things do not work like that. Even though people know perfectly well what they ought to do, they often behave differently. Why is this? This book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between ‘knowing’ and ‘doing’. It focuses on the role of non-cognitive capacities, such as setting goals, taking action, persevering and coping with setbacks, and shows how these capacities are undermined by adverse circumstances. By taking the latest psychological insights fully into account, this book presents a more realist perspective on self-reliance, and shows government officials how to design rules and institutions that allow for the natural limitations in people’s ‘capacity to act’. Table of ContentsChapter 1. The importance of mental capacity for self-reliance.- Chapter 2. Self-reliance in everyday life.- Chapter 3. Determinants of capacity to act.- Chapter 4. Self-reliance and situational influences.- Chapter 5. Training and intervention.- Chapter 6. Mental capacities, self-reliance and policy.- Bibliography.

Book SynopsisNearly eleven million Chinese migrants live outside of China. While many of these faces of China’s globalization headed for the popular Western destinations of the United States, Australia and Canada, others have been lured by the booming Asian economies. Compared with pre-1949 Chinese migrants, most are wealthier, motivated by a variety of concerns beyond economic survival and loyal to the communist regime. The reception of new Chinese migrants, however, has been less than warm in some places. In Singapore, tensions between Singaporean-Chinese and new Chinese arrivals present a puzzle: why are there tensions between ethnic Chinese settlers and new Chinese arrivals despite similarities in phenotype, ancestry and customs? Drawing on rich empirical data from ethnography and digital ethnography, Contesting Chineseness: Nationality, Class, Gender and New Chinese Migrants investigates this puzzle and details how ethnic Chinese subjects negotiate their identities in an age of contemporary Chinese migration and China’s ascent.Trade Review“Contesting Chineseness is well organized and structured. The book provides a comprehensive summary of the theoretical background and details on the methodology and offers a nuanced analysis of how the state and people imagine nationality, class and gender in the contestation of Chineseness. Readers find multiple noteworthy ideas, which makes Contesting Chineseness a useful read for anyone interested in ethnicity, race and migration, as well as in new mobilities in Asia.” - Yanxuan Lu, Transitions: Journal of Transient Migration, July 2023Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction: Contesting Chineseness Global anxieties at China’s ascent and the outflow of Chinese immigrants The invisibilities of co-ethnic politics Immigration and the cultural politics of being Chinese Imagining Chinese identity Insider, outsider and digital ethnography Overview of the book 1 Who’s Chinese? Book SynopsisThis casebook provides an overview of two increasingly related aspects of contemporary applied psychology: the exploration of computer-based psychological assessment strategies across cultures and the cross-cultural generalization of psychological constructs and procedures, particularly psychological assessment. In particular, the book is devoted to exploring the cultural generalizability in a Chinese context of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2), and the use of the Minnesota Report for the MMPI-2, the most widely used computer-based MMPI-2 interpretive system. Clinical case examples highlight the cultural convergences and divergences in the use of the Chinese version of the MMPI-2 and the Minnesota Report.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Family Violence in Japan: A Life Course
Book SynopsisThis book provides fresh sociological analyses on family violence in Japan. Aimed at an international audience, the authors adopt a life course perspective in presenting their research. Following a comprehensive overview of family violence in Japan in both historical and contemporary contexts, it then goes on to define the extent and causes of child abuse, intimate partner violence, filial violence, and elder abuse. In doing so, the book is the first of its kind to look at these different types of violence in Japanese families and simultaneously incorporate historical development of individuals and intergenerational factors. Furthermore, its reliance on the life course perspective enables readers to obtain a broader understanding of family violence in the country. Written by five Japanese family sociologists who have identified various major sociocultural characteristics that either induce or suppress family violence in Japan, it is a valuable resource not only to scholars and students of the topic, but also to those specializing in sociology, psychology, anthropology and comparative family studies around the globe.Table of ContentsPreface.- Chapter 1: Introduction: Toward a Better Understanding of Family Violence in Japan.- Chapter 2: Child Abuse: The History and Current State in Japanese Context.- Chapter 3: Intimate Partner Violence: Domestic Violence from Japanese Perspectives.- Chapter 4: Filial Violence: An Unrevealed Problem for Decades.- Chapter 5: Elder Abuse and Family Transformation.- Chapter 6: Conclusion: Prevention and Intervention of Family Violence in Japan.
