MIT Press Ltd Brainstorms MIT Press Philosophical Essays on

Book SynopsisAn anniversary edition of a classic in cognitive science, with a new introduction by the author. When Brainstorms was published in 1978, the interdisciplinary field of cognitive science was just emerging. Daniel Dennett was a young scholar who wanted to get philosophers out of their armchairs—and into conversations with psychologists, linguists, computer scientists. This collection of seventeen essays by Dennett offers a comprehensive theory of mind, encompassing traditional issues of consciousness and free will. Using careful arguments and ingenious thought experiments, the author exposes familiar preconceptions and hobbling intuitions. The essays are grouped into four sections: “Intentional Explanation and Attributions of Mentality”; “The Nature of Theory in Psychology”; “Objects of Consciousness and the Nature of Experience”; and “Free Will and Personhood.”This anniversary edition includes a new introductio

Book SynopsisInterdisciplinary perspectives on the capacity to perceive, appreciate, and make music.Research shows that all humans have a predisposition for music, just as they do for language. All of us can perceive and enjoy music, even if we can't carry a tune and consider ourselves “unmusical.” This volume offers interdisciplinary perspectives on the capacity to perceive, appreciate, and make music. Scholars from biology, musicology, neurology, genetics, computer science, anthropology, psychology, and other fields consider what music is for and why every human culture has it; whether musicality is a uniquely human capacity; and what biological and cognitive mechanisms underlie it.Contributors outline a research program in musicality, and discuss issues in studying the evolution of music; consider principles, constraints, and theories of origins; review musicality from cross-cultural, cross-species, and cross-domain perspectives; discuss the computational modeling of

Book SynopsisA thought-provoking argument that consciousness—more widespread than previously assumed—is the feeling of being alive, not a type of computation or a clever hack   In The Feeling of Life Itself, Christof Koch offers a straightforward definition of consciousness as any subjective experience, from the most mundane to the most exalted—the feeling of being alive. Psychologists study which cognitive operations underpin a given conscious perception. Neuroscientists track the neural correlates of consciousness in the brain, the organ of the mind. But why the brain and not, say, the liver? How can the brain—three pounds of highly excitable matter, a piece of furniture in the universe, subject to the same laws of physics as any other piece—give rise to subjective experience? Koch argues that what is needed to answer these questions is a quantitative theory that starts with experience and proceeds to the brain. In The Feeling of

Book SynopsisWhat altered states of consciousness—the dissolution of feelings of time and self—can tell us about the mystery of consciousness.During extraordinary moments of consciousness—shock, meditative states and sudden mystical revelations, out-of-body experiences, or drug intoxication—our senses of time and self are altered; we may even feel time and self dissolving. These experiences have long been ignored by mainstream science, or considered crazy fantasies. Recent research, however, has located the neural underpinnings of these altered states of mind. In this book, neuropsychologist Marc Wittmann shows how experiences that disturb or widen our everyday understanding of the self can help solve the mystery of consciousness.Wittmann explains that the relationship between consciousness of time and consciousness of self is close; in extreme circumstances, the experiences of space and self intensify and weaken together. He considers the emergence of the

Book SynopsisThe unconscious has had a long and chequered history. For at least the last 4,000 years, societies have concocted comforting fables in the face of the recurrent puzzles of human existence - death, dreaming, madness, possession, inspiration - that invariably rely on some notion of the unconscious. Supernatural ''fairy stories'' need some internal proxy or contact point through which the influence of demons and spirits can flow. And without such gods and forces, some psychological machinery is needed to take over their work. But what IS the unconscious? Is it ''God''s viceroy'', the soul? Is it the locked ward of Freudian desire? Is the subliminal mind the source of the sublime emotions of the Romantics? Is is the mental microchip of cognitive science? Or is it simply the brain?Trade ReviewWith wit, weird tales and wonderful metaphors, Claxton illuminates the long dark history of the undermind * Susan Blackmore, author of 'CONSCIOUSNESS: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE MEME MACHINE *It is hard not to feel enticed by a book with such engaging opening words * Steven Rose, GUARDIAN *For anyone who ever wondered why people can be terrified of harmless things, why tunes get stuck in their head or what happens during hypnosis, this vigorously written, fascinating yet accessible book is a must. * IRISH EXAMINER *Intriguing. * FOCUS *

Book SynopsisIn A Jungian Approach to Spontaneous Drawing, Patricia Anne Elwood provides an accessible and thought-provoking introduction to exploring spontaneous images, focusing on the value of this tool for insight into the unconscious. Illustrated with drawings of clients throughout, the book poignantly demonstrates how one can connect and access the spheres within through drawing, and how this process can reveal the unexpected.Elwood begins by accessibly introducing key Jungian concepts and exploring Jung's belief in the power of spontaneity as an invaluable tool in one's journey to the soul. As well as illuminating spontaneity, an oft-forgotten aspect of Jung's psychology, she explores themes including structure and dynamics, symbols and archetypal patterns.A Jungian Approach to Spontaneous Drawing also examines common motifs including houses, trees and people, and presents extended studies of work with children and adults and how their drawings relate and reveaTrade Review"This is a much-needed book on Image, Symbol, Jung and Therapy. Elwood’s style is very unique in a positive and readable way. The book is paradoxical - it's well anchored in theory, substantial on facts and method and yet poetic and meditative at the same time. Her style pulls the reader in and the reader stays to reflect. I found it to be such a rich experience. This book is an essential resource for analysts, mental health practitioners and graduate students in psychotherapy and art therapy." - John Allan, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada; Jungian analyst, and author of Inscapes of the Child's World: Jungian Counselling in Schools and Clinics"Patricia Elwood’s book invites the reader into the breath-taking creative world of C.G. Jung. Not only does the author offer a comprehensive, very readable, precis of the principal tenets of Jung’s analytical psychology, but at the same time Elwood offers an in-depth appreciation of spontaneous artwork. As the unconscious reveals the wealth of its images, the author leads the reader forward to a deeper understanding of their own self. This fine, insightful book is truly an encounter with the Soul. It is a gift to all explorers of the psyche and spiritual seekers." - Susan Tiberghien, lecturer and author, Writing Towards Wholeness "Following in the tradition of C.G. Jung and Susan Bach, the author demonstrates and explains incredible revelations to be discovered through spontaneous drawing: truly A Window to the Soul! Simple images of trees, houses, human and animal figures are shown to reveal inner dynamics, helping us to better understand the nature of the psyche and its influence on our ways of being."- Dr Robert Hinshaw, PhD, C. Book Synopsis*THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER* What is a dream? Why do we dream? How do our bodies and minds use dreams? These questions are the starting point for this unprecedented, astonishing study of the role and significance of dreams, from the beginning of human history. An investigation on the grand scale, encompassing literature, anthropology, religion, and science, it articulates the essential place dreams occupy in human culture, and how they functioned as the catalyst that compelled us to transform our earthly habitat into a human world. From the earliest cave paintings - where the author finds a key to humankind''s first dreams, which contributed to our capacity to perceive past and future - to cutting-edge scientific research, Ribeiro arrives at startling and revolutionary conclusions about the role of dreams in human existence and evolution. He explores the advances that contemporary neuroscience, biochemistry and psychology have made inTrade ReviewThe Oracle of Night makes a resounding case for the mystery, beauty and cognitive importance of dreams. Ribeiro marshals prodigious evidence to bolster his case . . . This book is the culmination of decades of thought and collaborative work. It's also the expression of remarkable, if sometimes all-over-the-map, scholarship, drawing on history, literature, biology, anthropology, neuroscience, sociology and psychology, among other disciplines . . . His lyrical account is aided by Daniel Hahn's beautiful translation from the Portuguese . . . Delightful . . . You can't help being awed and enchanted by the wonder with which Ribeiro approaches his subject, by the depth of his knowledge and passion. * The New York Times *A comprehensive consideration of the sleeping mind . . . [Ribeiro] offers a capacious examination of the phenomenon of dreaming. The author draws on biology, chemistry, neurophysiology, anthropology, mythology, history, literature, biography, and art-along with myriad examples of dream narratives-to create a rich history of the human mind . . . A stimulating and informative overview. * Kirkus *[Ribeiro] explores hypotheses about the evolutionary value of sleep to humans, presenting a fascinating analysis of the debate about the relationship between sleep and cognitive ability . . . concluding, among other things, that nap rooms would be a valuable addition to school environments. * Publishers Weekly *A groundbreaking history of the human mind told through our experience of dreams-from the earliest accounts to current scientific findings-and the essential role of dreams in the formation of who we are and the world we have made. * Next Big Idea Club *"A sweeping account as tangled and chaotic-and fascinating-as the dreams themselves . . . It reinfuses the dreamscape with beauty, mystery and significance . . . The Oracle of Night takes a breakneck journey through history, from cave paintings and the ancient Greeks to Celtic myths, Egyptian pharaohs, Gilgamesh and Julius Caesar. The text, translated from the Portuguese by Daniel Hahn, moves fluidly from systemic historiography to guesswork and lighthearted extrapolation . . . The result is a curiously hybridized book, at times playful, at times intensely scientific . . . Poetic and visceral." * The Wall Street Journal *

Book SynopsisThis monograph is the product of an interdisciplinary experiment--an artistic experiment and a psychological experiment--focused on dreams. Inspired by the prevalence of dream imagery and dream logic in surrealist art, the authors asked 100 art students to create digital images representing critical scenes from one of their dreams, then to create a surrealist collage from the digital images. The resulting collages tend to capture the surreality envisioned in actual works of surrealist art, as two collages included in the book illustrate. Inspired also by the psychological problem of studying other minds, the authors asked the 100 art students to describe their dream in writing, to interpret their dream, and to complete two personality measures: the Short Form of the Boundary Questionnaire and the Brief Symptom Inventory. The art students'' scores on particular personality scales were found to be statistically associated with particular dream aspects, many of which are visually observabTable of ContentsAn Interdisciplinary Experiment on Dream Imagery Experimental Methods Artistic Experiment: Surrealism and the Boundaries between Subconscious Dreaming and Reality Penetration of the Boundaries between Dream and Reality Quest for Archetypal Manifestations of Subconscious Impulses Use of Collage to Make Incongruities Compatible Conclusions from the Artistic Experiment Psychological Experiment: The Problem of Other Minds and the Visual Content of Dreams Connections between Emotions Underlying a Dream and Visual Aspects of the Dream Connections between Symptoms of Psychopathology and Visual Aspects of the Dream Conclusions from the Psychological Experiment Appendix with 100 Artists’ Verbal Descriptions, Interpretations, and Digital Images of Their Own Dreams References Index to Dreams

Book SynopsisUp until now, we have had little knowledge of what the state of unconsciousness was like from the patient's point of view. Surprisingly, in a state considered void of human experiences, Lawrence found that the events subjects reported were extraordinary. Her research in hospital units and in the literature reveals that more than 70% of the individuals who regain consciousness remember events during their unconscious period. They heard and understood conversations, had inner dialogues, recognized their emotions, and went out of their bodies. As would be expected, some of the patients' experiences are the now-recognized classic NDEs (near-death experiences). The author also includes descriptions of related research from nursing, medicine, psychology, and parapsychology. The phenomena described in the book are not easily explained by the paradigm of one discipline. It is the author's point of view that because the phenomena crosses the lines of many disciplines, the aTable of ContentsIntroduction Historical Theories, Assumptions, and Beliefs Paradigms of the Disciplines: Medical Science, Psychology, Parapsychology, and Physics Carol's Experience Total Unconsciousness Perceived Unconsciousness Inner Awareness Distorted Consciousness Extrasensory Experiences Out-of-Body Experiences Near-Death Experiences Near-Death Visits The Grim Reaper Pronounced Dead but Still Alive Conclusions, Current Research, and Clinical Implications Appendix: Further Evidence for Veridical Perception during Near-Death Experiences References Index
