On a daily basis we face deeply ingrained beliefs that our sex determines our skills and preferences, from toys and colours to career choice and salaries. But what does this mean for our thoughts, decisions and behaviour? Using the latest cutting-edge neuroscience, Gina Rippon unpacks the stereotypes that bombard us from our earliest moments and shows how these messages mould our ideas of ourselves and even shape our brains. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen Anna Bianchi's grandchild asked, "Nanny, you do know I'm a girl, don't you?", Anna recognised this as a pivotal, and daunting, moment in their relationship. She knew that to answer her grandchild, who had been assigned male at birth, her own attitudes, assumptions and beliefs about gender would need to be examined. With reassuring honesty and openness, Anna draws deeply on four areas: her own experience, current research, interviews with children and their families, and a discussion of power, both in society and between children and adults. She shows how the inner journey of the adult inevitably impacts on the outer journey of the child and, given the significance of this, offers a step-by-step guide to becoming an ally to the gender-expansive child. For anyone eager to understand their child's gender experience, or to learn how best to accept, support and protect them, this book will provide knowledge, reassurance and the confidence to do so.Trade ReviewAnna Bianchi, in her empathy and wisdom as a grandmother and a scholar, goes deep and wide, from our insides to the outside world, guiding us on the journey of building a circle of support around our gender creative children, whether they be our grandchild, our own child, or every child. With gender expansive children as our leaders, Bianchi teaches us how to achieve the acceptance, advocacy, and activism that qualify us as allies to the children. A must read. -- Diane Ehrensaft, Ph.D., Director of Mental Health, Child and Adolescent Gender Center and author of 'The Gender Creative Child' and 'Gender Born, Gender Made'When author Bianchi's grandson Ruben was only four years old, his 'clarity about his own gender path was apparent to anyone who knew him.' Bianchi, who identifies as cisgender, writes, 'My fears, my politics, my prejudice, assumptions and attitudes were all exposed, caught up, spun around and scattered by this experience.' She then understood that she needed to 'step down as the all-knowing adult and become an apprentice to life instead.' The heartfelt and open text identifies four keys to becoming an ally to the gender-expansive child: listening, imagination, empathy, and courage. Bianchi walks a graceful path, seamlessly exploring her own experience, that of her grandchild, the politics of society, and the human conditions of fear and love. VERDICT In this powerful offering, the author weaves a combination of biography and parental advice into the important topics of safety, labels, bigotry, and forgiveness. Enthusiastically recommended for growing collections on transgender youth. -- Library Journal starred reviewThis book is a warm and insightful read that I will refer back to again and again as my trans son continues through his transition. -- Peg, mother of a trans boyAs a young trans person who is currently transitioning, I feel that books like this are vital in helping people support and understand those in the trans community. -- NiaThis book should be essential reading for anyone who looks after or works with children and young people. It would also be really useful reading for anyone working or interested in the fields of equality and diversity. Anna's writing style draws the reader in to some very personal stories, anecdotes and acts as a useful how to guide to support children and young people questioning their gender identity. The book challenges the reader to go on a deep dive to explore their own thoughts, feelings and unconscious prejudices. The book is also structured as a workbook to support parents and carers of children and young people guiding them on a journey to being truly inclusive parents. Written at a time of challenging debate around gender identity and the rights of transgender people, I cannot recommend this book enough. -- Berkeley Wilde, Director, The Diversity TrustAs the grandmother of a transgender child, Anna Bianchi provides a much needed perspective on an ally's journey through the Gender Matrix. Guided by her own family's process, and by the love for her grandchild, Bianchi gently coaches others to challenge their own gender assumptions, moving not only through acceptance, but towards an actual social transformation. -- Rachel Pepper, LMFT, author of 'Transitions of the Heart' and 'The Transgender Child'Table of ContentsIntroduction: What is the Gender Matrix? 1. Book SynopsisThis is the story of a long-lasting relationship, surviving against the odds. It is the story of Wenn and Beatrice Lawson, born almost twelve years apart in different countries with different cultures, who were both assigned female at birth. After nineteen years of marriage and four children, Wenn entered a same-sex relationship with Beatrice. Little did Beatrice know that twenty-two years later, Wenn would transition from female to male. This unique and honest memoir tells the story of Wenn's transition and Beatrice's journey alongside him.Co-written by Wenn and Beatrice, who are both on the autism spectrum, this book offers a rare insight into an older couple's experience of transition, with particular emphasis on how Beatrice really felt about the changes. Without holding back, they tell the true story of the conflicts, challenges and growing celebration and joy that can arise from transitioning together as a couple.Trade ReviewBooks by Wenn have always explored the frontiers of autism. This is the love story of Wenn and Beatrice that, through the years, became an exploration of gender and identity. I now see an increasing number of clients who are travelling the same road and this will be their travel guide. -- Tony Attwood, Minds and Hearts Clinic, BrisbaneA wonderful multifaceted account of discovering sexuality, exploring gender identity and living with autism, wrapped up in a beautifully honest and inspiring love story of one couple's journey of overcoming obstacles to find each other, to find themselves and to find a way to move forward together. It is impossible not to feel completely privileged to be able to share in their unique experience of undergoing gender transition as a couple. -- Finlay Games (finntheinfinncible), Transgender advocate and educator, and YouTube host and blogger on gender transition, mental health and recoveryOne of the most overlooked areas of autism research is the complex dance between autism, gender, and sexuality. Wenn Lawson's tender, frank, and beautifully observed account of the evolution of his relationship to himself and his beloved Beatrice deals honestly with the complexities of these issues, while also being a touching and deeply human love story. "There are more forms of gender," Lawson writes, "than stars in the sky." Transitioning Together is a brave and pioneering map of this still-unexplored terrain. -- Steve Silberman, author of 'NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and How to Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently'Transitioning Together is a love story with a twist. Or rather two twists. It is the story of Beatrice and Wenn overcoming personal battles to come together as a lesbian couple in the mid-80s, at a time when such things were very frowned upon; and it is the story of the same couple coping when, decades later, Wenn realises that he is transgender - a trans man. Touching and insightful, as trans comes "out of the closet" this is an increasingly relevant story for our times, as individuals must come to terms with how this, too, impacts upon their relationship. -- Jane Fae, journalist and campaignerTable of ContentsVarious Notes on Sex and Gender. Book Synopsis'The book we all need for this moment in time.' CN LESTER'An absolute must read' FOX FISHER'A genius book' LIBRARY JOURNAL REVIEWMuch of society's thinking operates in a highly rigid and binary manner; something is good or bad, right or wrong, a success or a failure, and so on. Challenging this limited way of thinking, this ground-breaking book looks at how non-binary methods of thought can be applied to all aspects of life, and offer new and greater ways of understanding ourselves and how we relate to others.Using bisexual and non-binary gender experiences as a starting point, this book addresses the key issues with binary thinking regarding our relationships, bodies, emotions, wellbeing and our sense of identity and sets out a range of practices which may help us to think in more non-binary, both/and, or uncertain ways.A truly original and insightful piece, this guide encourages reflection on how we view and understand the world we live in and how we all bend, blur or break society's binary codes.Trade ReviewThe authors go to great lengths to make their language and framing inclusive; each chapter features "slow down pages" that invite the reader to "pause and tune in to yourself." 5 in stock

Book SynopsisTrans clients are frequently doubted, misunderstood, infantilised and judged by professionals, and this book presents an approach that ensures psychological wellbeing and trust is built between counsellor and client. This person-centred, affirmative approach is based around unlearning assumptions about gender and destabilising professionals' ideas of 'knowing better' than, and judging the client, so that they can forge a relationship and connection that is on an equal footing. The book explores a range of topics such as the overlap of gender diversity and autism, sex and sexuality, intersectionality, unconscious bias and reflective practice. Essential reading for professionals that want to support trans people's mental health and social wellbeing.Trade ReviewThis excellent book provides therapists, counsellors, and other practitioners with all they need to know about working with trans and gender-diverse clients. Given the current climate of panic and misinformation in this area, the book provides a much-needed counterbalance: a straightforward, accessible, and engaging overview of how sex and gender work, what key terms mean, what is involved in various forms of transition, the impact of transphobia, and the importance of community, among other topics. The chapters covering autism and other forms of neurodivergence, and diversity within trans communities, were particularly welcome. I would heartily recommend this to any clinician or practitioner wanting to improve their knowledge in this area. Absolutely superb. -- Dr Meg-John Barker, author of How to Understand Your Gender and Queer: A Graphic HistoryThis is a deeply inclusive book and a must read for therapists and anyone working with trans and gender diverse people. Book SynopsisAn educational and inspirational book that offers practical guidance for art therapists working with transgender and gender-expansive youth and their families. It provides art therapy goals, recommended treatments and coping skills to use with this client group. Each chapter looks at how art therapy can address a different concern or aspect of the experience, such as transitioning, bullying, and recognizing or building a support system. It includes detailed case studies and cutting-edge art therapy interventions, which help young people to express the emotions surrounding the discovery of gender identity, the transition process, and self-care.Trade ReviewIf you are an art therapist who finds yourself working with a transgender or gender-expansive child or teen and you need a good foundation to support them, this book is for you! Art Therapy with Transgender and Gender-Expansive Children and Teenagers is an excellent introduction to providing affirming therapy from an art therapy lens. Throughout the text, it is clear Shannon Scott-Miller and Kelly Darke are passionate advocates, art therapists, and educators. They break down complex topics into manageable chunks, making it accessible for the art therapist who has not previously worked with transgender or gender-expansive children and teenagers. Scott-Miller and Darke critically look at implicit bias with gender expression and gender identity, giving specific art directives assisting in investigating individual, family and cultural bias in a gentle, yet critically reflexive way. Scott-Miller and Darke provide case studies as examples to aid in the learning process integrating ideas of affirming therapy throughout the book. The developmental stages of gender development and its clinical implications is examined with supporting case studies and references. Gender Dysphoria is highlighted in the text with diverse examples of how art therapy can support treatment. Scott-Miller and Darke look at systems level assessment and support building for the client. Working primarily with transgender clients, I can attest to the importance of assessing for support and the impact of systemic oppression on the mental health of transgender and gender-diverse individuals. Scott-Miller and Darke end the text with critically reflecting on the lack of standards and guidelines within the American Art Therapy Association for working with transgender clients, pushing for more support from the national organization as well as the community to do more research to better support our work with this population. Scott-Miller and Darke lay the foundation that is needed for working with gender-expansive and transgender children and teens in art therapy. Book SynopsisAMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION 2021 STONEWALL HONOR BOOKMeet Kimberly, a regular suburban housewife and mother, whose discovery later in life that she was born intersex fuelled her to become an international human rights defender and globally-recognised activist. Charting her intersex discovery and her journey to self-acceptance, this book movingly portrays how being intersex impacted Kimberly's personal and family life, as well as her career. From uncovering a secret that was intentionally kept from her, to coming out to her family and friends and fighting for intersex rights, her candid and empowering story helps breakdown barriers and misconceptions of intersex people and brings to light the trauma and harmful impact medical intervention continues to have on the intersex community. Written from a non-queer perspective, and filled with much-needed, straightforward information and advice about what it means to be intersex, this is a vital and timely resource for intersex people and their families, as well as the general reader.Trade ReviewYou will laugh, cry, and get furious alongside Zieselman as she beautifully shares her raw and unbelievable story that will change everything you thought you knew about bodies, identities, and the white, straight, well-to-do mother next door. -- Georgiann Davis, PhD, sociology professor, scholar-activist, and author of Contesting Intersex: The Dubious DiagnosisIn XOXY Kimberly Zieselman engages and inspires by sharing the intimate details of her burgeoning awareness at mid-life that she was born intersex, and the incredible journey she has been on to help herself and others. It is a gripping narrative that explores how having had information withheld- and lies told to her by her doctors- even more than her unique biology, has impacted her life. It also chronicles Zieselman's tireless efforts as an advocate and leader to educate those unfamiliar with intersex, and to eradicate the shame, stigma, and discrimination that the 1 in 50 of us who inhabit intersex bodies experience almost daily. She documents how organized medicine continues to perpetuate secrecy and shame by performing harmful and largely irreversible cosmetic surgeries on intersex infants with the singular objective of making their bodies conform to gender norms. Zieselman is a caped and capable crusader for change, and her book is filled with glimmers of hope for the current and future generation of intersex children. This book is for anyone who has ever felt different, or has stood up against judgment or intolerance, and for anyone who wants to understand what's at stake. -- Sherri Groveman Morris, Founder, AIS Support Group USAXOXY makes clear how binary notions of gender and sex embedded in U.S. health care contribute to life-long harms of intersex persons. This candid personal narrative shows us an intersex woman who refuses to be erased and chronicles the flourishing of an intersex movement that she helped build. An important and engaging read. -- Charlene Galarneau, Associate Professor Emerita, Women's and Gender Studies, Wellesley College; and, Senior Lecturer, Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School - Center for BioethicsZieselman's riveting account of secrets and their consequences should motivate physicians to end the damaging, nonconsensual approach to intersex management of children, and inspire many who have endured similar medical trauma. Her turn to activism for intersex people everywhere as director of interACT is nothing short of remarkable. -- Elizabeth Reis, Ph.D., professor of gender and bioethics at the Macaulay Honors College at CUNY, and the author of Bodies in Doubt: An American History of Intersex. An intimate, searing memoir of an intersex life, XOXY lays bare the trauma of being betrayed by the medical profession, and details how one person finds empowerment through community and advocacy. -- I.W. Gregorio, urologist and author of the Lambda Literary Finalist None of the Above. In XOXY Kimberly Zieselman details the shame, secrecy and lies she's faced as an intersex person since her childhood. Her perseverance and strength in the face of an ignorant medical establishment makes for an astonishing story that you won't be able to put down. Kimberly has been advocating for intersex children 2014 as the director of InterACT, an organization focused on ending harmful medical interventions on intersex children, and she played an essential role in helping me tell my own story to the world, for which I will be forever grateful. This book will help readers understand intersex, and the need to protect the bodily autonomy of all intersex individuals. -- Hanne Gaby Odiele, Internationally Renown Model and Intersex ActivistEarly in XOXY, Zieselman writes, "I felt a rush of anxiety, but there was a simultaneous emptiness that was settling into me." That poetic tension is threaded subtly throughout the book. Zieselman tells her own story mellifluously, but with a sense of palpable unease. After all, the narrative arch is of a woman in her forties learning how she was lied to most of her life, and then learning how that lie was part of a spectacular web of medical misinformation and ill-treatment.If you know the story of how most intersex people have been systemically abused by modern medicine, this will be a read laced with foreshadowing for you. If you don't, some of the most eerily familiar and quotidian passages will expose you to an important, often misunderstood narrative about what it means to be different in this world. There are vignettes about the typical childhood discoveries-the anticipation of getting a period, being studied by classmates at a new school as if an exotic artifact, doing drugs and shoplifting. Zieselman is brutally honest about the vulnerabilities of adulthood, too-from imposter's syndrome at work to anxieties over the chaos of parenting kids with disabilities. These stories all take on a new, textured meaning when the truth is revealed. And then there are plot twists that seem ripped from a science fiction film-Kafkaesque half-truths from your parents, a doctor telling a 16-year-old her vagina is too small for her future husband to be sexually satisfied, and that nagging feeling that, even as you get older and wiser, what seems to be everyone else's reality isn't quite the same for you. Even in these moments, Zieselman delivers her story of trauma with alacrity. At one point, the teenage author-narrator is told there's only one other person in the world like her-a mysterious woman in Canada. She becomes a minor character for the rest of the book-at once desperate and comedic. And in joining Zieselman on her journey in XOXY, you get to take one of your own, and meet the intersex community. A community formed around trauma, strengthened by validation, and liberated by too-often still-elusive truth and justice. This book is part not only of an individual's life, but of a movement. It's a movement demanding the simplest of things-truth, autonomy, dignity. You'd be forgiven for assuming the memoir of a white straight cisgender woman in Massachusetts wouldn't be a story of profound self-discovery in a marginalized community; you'd also be wrong. Therein lies the power of XOXY-in a raw narrative, Zieselman delicately guides you through her own journey as an intersex woman, a mother and a lawyer, and perhaps a not-so-unlikely activist. -- Kyle Knight, Senior Researcher, Human Rights WatchXOXY is a remarkable testimonial to the power of truth and connection to alchemize shame into empowerment. Overcoming the trauma of discovering in adulthood that surgeons lied to her when she was a teenager and removed her gonads without her knowledge or permission, Kimberly Zieselman refused to remain an invisible member of a "silent majority" long assumed by doctors to be satisfied with their treatment. This is the story of how she transformed herself into a fierce international advocate who champions the human rights of intersex children everywhere to discover for themselves who they want to be. -- Arlene B. Book SynopsisWithin these pages James K. Beggan puts forward a novel approach to understanding sexual harassment by high value superstars in the workplace. The approach integrates ideas derived from evolutionary theory, utility theory, sexual scripting theory and research on the regulation of emotion. Besides providing a better understanding of the phenomenon, the book aims to contribute to the development of better techniques to prevent sexual harassment. Recently, credible allegations of sexual misconduct against high profile figures have dominated the news. Sexual harassment has become an important issue for leaders and those who study leadership. The author presents a new approach to understanding sexual harassment in the #MeToo era that integrates research from a diverse range of areas typically ignored by researchers. Ideas derived from this new approach are used to propose more effective methods for the elimination of sexual harassment in the workplace. The book also addresses how efforts to prevent sexual harassment may interfere with the free expression of sexuality and ultimately threaten the rights of the individual. Academics and journalists interested in understanding sexual harassment, including graduate students, and undergraduates enrolled in upper division specialized courses in gender relations will find this book to be innovative and informative.Table of ContentsContents: 1. Book Synopsis''Every parent needs to read this'' Helen JoyceUntil just a few years ago, gender dysphoria severe discomfort in one's biological sex was vanishingly rare. It was typically found in less than .01 percent of the population, emerged in early childhood, and afflicted males almost exclusively. But today whole groups of female friends in colleges and schools across the world are coming out as ''transgender''. These are girls who had never experienced any discomfort in their biological sex until they heard a coming-out story from a speaker at a school assembly or discovered the internet community of trans ''influencers''.Unsuspecting parents now find their daughters in thrall to YouTube stars and ''gender-affirming'' educators and therapists, who push life-changing interventions on young girls including medically unnecessary double mastectomies, and hormone treatments that can cause permanent infertility.Abigail Shrier, a writer for the Wall Street Journal, has talked to the girls, their agonised parents, and the therapists and doctors who enable gender transitions, as well as to ''detransitioners'' young women who bitterly regret what they have done to themselves. Coming out as transgender immediately boosts these girls' social status, Shrier finds, but once they take the first steps of transition, it is not easy to walk back.

In the same period, the number of referrals exploded and the profile of the patients changed: from largely pre-pubescent boys to mostly adolescent girls, who were often contending with other difficulties. Book SynopsisIn Fluid, revolutionary fashion designer Harris Reed introduces the world to a new era in fluid fashion. At the centre of Harris Reed’s sartorial journey has always been his desire to change the way people express their identities through clothing. Fluidity’s essence is adaptable, evolutionary, and dynamic, and Harris’s work constantly disrupts the divide between men's and women's clothing. His pieces have been worn by Harry Styles, Adele, Sam Smith, Iman, and Beyoncé—and with each piece he has generated an instantly iconic cultural moment, pushing conversations about gender expression into the mainstream. Fluid examines historical antecedents of fluidity, questions old power structures, and urges people to find their authentic selves in this new avenue of fashion. With stunning photography, resplendent fashion, and illustrations of Harris's design process, Fluid takes readers beyond the idea of clothes as mere garments, reasoning that clothes are a nexus of art, philosophy, and history that can be used to help shape our culture and challenge understandings of gender. With this book, Harris Reed affirms that fluid is the future of fashion.

Book SynopsisFrom the Father Stunter Culture that says fathers are less than to masculinity narratives telling men theres only one way to be a father -- lets face it -- fathers are dealt a short shaft. The truth? We need fathers more than ever. We''ve an urgent task to set things right with, and for, fathers. And its one that must be done. If you don''t agree; this book is not for you. SPUNK: A Manifesto Modernising Fatherhood elevates the conversation about modern fatherhood beyond the nuts and bolts of daddy daycare as it goes deep inside how men view their fathering as they attempt (day in, day out) to be a dad to their kids. Inside SPUNK you will discover more than a thousand men revealing what it means to be a father in this fast-changing world. Through a combination of brand-new research married alongside portraits from acclaimed podcast, School for Fathers, men uncover how much being a father is a whole new, often confusing, ballgame. Fathers are simultaneously stunted by outdated structures while held tight to fixed notions of manhood leaving them (and us) in something of a hot mess. SPUNK is a pragmatic tell-all of why fathers behave in the ways they do and a problem-solving roadmap for the kind of fatherhood men are already shooting for but struggling to grasp. The kind of fatherhood our children yearn for and deserve. Using data from fathers globally, SPUNK provides answers to: What kind of SPUNK do modern fathers need? How do fathers with this SPUNK raise their children? Why SPUNK will lead the way to a more authentic and fulfilled fatherhood identity. This straight-shooting book offers practical alternatives to sucking up the same old BS from the world we live in -- the media, policies, laws and workplace structures -- that attempts, relentlessly, to control what fathers are (not) capable of. Compassion, candour and radical father-allyship form the foundation of change as we collectively must ask, whats needed now for a better future for fathers and our children? The answer is SPUNK.

Hilary Rose, THES'A witty and meticulously researched exposé of the sloppy studies that pass for scientific evidence in so many of today's bestselling books on sex differences.' Carol Tavris, TLSGender inequalities are increasingly defended by citing hard-wired differences between the male and female brain. That's why, we're told, there are so few women in science, so few men in the laundry room - different brains are just suited to different things. With sparkling wit and humour, Cordelia Fine attacks this 'neurosexism', revealing the mind's remarkable plasticity, the substantial influence of culture on identity, and the malleability of what we consider to be 'hardwired' difference. This modern classic shows the surprising extent to which boys and girls, men and women are made - not born.Trade ReviewWe are all in [Fine's] debt. She has the expertise to check the research references cited by academic as well as popular books on the subject, and she has the clarity and wit to impart her findings to the lay reader. She exposes shockingly lightweight research that is taken seriously and nuanced research that is misreported. -- GuardianThe hard data is illuminating, and engaging, but Fine manages a light touch throughout. This is a truly startling book. -- Independent on SundayTwo books came out this year (2010) which, in the long-term, could change how we view gender for ever. ... Cordelia Fine's 'Delusions of Gender: The Real Science Behind Sex Differences' (Icon Books) finally debunked the myth that men and women's minds are significantly different .... Both books were favourably reviewed and hotly discussed. Over time their conclusions could have far-reaching consequences as significant as 'The Female Eunuch.' -- Viv Groskop, GuardianA fascinating subject. A bracing argument. -- Evening Standard'Delusions of Gender' ... carefully and with great precision demolishes the nonsense that pervades the popular and technical literature pretending to be scientific fact, exposing it as truthiness which is nowhere close to truth. ... 'Delusions of Gender' is an excellent place to start. -- Professor Judy Roitman, Association for Women in Mathematics NewsletterFine is fun, droll yet deeply serious. Setting a cracking pace, Delusions tackles the power of implicit association (those unconscious associations we make about men and women) and of negative stereotyping, plus the empathising/systematising theory proposed by psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen, and the messy world of brain scans and genetic research. Her conclusion: we are in thrall to "neurosexism". -- New ScientistThe result of Fine's irritation is a witty and meticulously researched exposé of the sloppy studies that pass for scientific evidence in so many of today's bestselling books on sex differences... Can we stop talking about brains now? Those who can't, and anyone else who would like to know what today's best science reveals about gender differences - and similarities - could not do better than read this book. -- Carol Tavris, TLS['Brain Storm' and 'Delusions of Gender' are] well-informed, well-argued and (for science books, perhaps unusually) well-written interventions in ... one of the most important debates in current sexual politics. -- Trouble and Strife JournalIf you believe that the tide of blue and pink that greets children whenever they walk into a toy or children's clothes shop is just about colours ... think again. -- Working MumsThis is a book with such a large scope that it's near-impossible to overestimate its importance. Much like 'The Spirit Level' did for socio-economics, this book ropes together decades' worth of studies on gender differences and casts a cool, calm eye (and an arched brow) over them all... This book will cast a light on gender assumptions you didn't know you had, and it's hilarious - with chapter titles such as 'We Think, Therefore You Are' and 'Sex and Premature Speculation,' Dr Fine is a brilliant tour guide - making light, fun and engaging work of the research. By debunking the rubbish, this book opens up possibilities for a (slightly) clearer vision of the future. Not to be missed. -- Fat QuarterIn 'Delusions of Gender' Cordelia Fine does a magnificent job debunking the so-called science, and especially the brain science, of gender. If you thought there were some inescapable facts about women's minds - some hard wiring that explains poor science and maths performance, or the ability to remember to buy the milk and arrange the holidays - you can put these on the rubbish heap. Instead, Fine shows that there are almost no areas of performance that are not touched by cultural stereotypes. This scholarly book will make you itch to press the delete button on so much nonsense, while being pure fun to read. -- Emeritus Professor Uta Frith, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London, Research Foundation Professor, University of Aarhus'Cordelia Fine has a first-rate intellect and writing talent to burn. In her new book, Delusions of Gender, she takes aim at the idea that male brains and female brains are "wired differently", leading men and women to act in a manner consistent with decades-old gender stereotypes. Armed with penetrating insights, a rapier wit, and a slew of carefully researched facts, Fine lowers her visor, lifts her lance, and attacks this idea full-force. Whether her adversaries can rally their forces and mount a successful counter-attack remains to be seen. What's certain at this point, however, is that in Delusions of Gender Cordelia Fine has struck a terrific first blow against what she calls "neurosexism". -- Professor William Ickes, author of 'Everyday Mind Reading: Understanding What Other People Think and Feel.'Fine turns the popular science book formula on its head. -- USA TodayThe author, Cordelia Fine, who has a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience from University College London, is an acerbic critic, mincing no words when it comes to those she disagrees with. But her sharp tongue is tempered with humor and linguistic playfulness, as the title itself suggests.... It's too late to tell that to Dr. Sax, a proponent of single-sex education, who cited the Connellan study as evidence that 'girls are born prewired to be interested in faces while boys are prewired to be more interested in moving objects.' But it's not too late to read this book and see how complex and fascinating the whole issue is. -- New York TimesSo both sexes should rejoice at Cordelia Fine's new book, Delusions of Gender, a vitriolic attack on the sexism masquerading as psychology that is enjoying a renaissance. -- Rosamund Irwin, London Evening StandardImpeccably researched and bitingly funny. -- Rosamund Irwin, London Evening StandardFine's tone is witty but the citations are detailed and the bibliography extensive...This book is an entertaining weapon in that fight (for education and social justice) and will make a nice "thwok" sound bouncing off the heads of sexists. -- Sarah Ensor, Socialist reviewFine's conclusions provide a timely warning against taking too seriously the deluge of books and articles that would have us believe that men are biologically advantaged when it comes to mathematics, racing, driving or map reading - and that women are naturally more intuitive and nurturing, so better at childcare and multitasking. -- Claire Jones, GuardianIn Delusions of Gender the psychologist Cordelia Fine exposes the bad science, the ridiculous arguments and the persistent biases that blind us to the ways we ourselves enforce the gender stereotypes we think we are trying to overcome. -- Terri Apter, GuardianFine eviscerates both the neuroscientists who claim to have found the answers and the popularisers who take their findings and run with them. -- Katherine Bouton, Deputy Editor of New York Times Magazine.Timely and provocative, her argument is also excellent at debunking oversimplified theories, for instance, that biology is destiny. -- MetroA well-stocked armoury that includes extensive research, sharp whit and a probing intelligence, and which refuses to be satisfied with the delusional myth-making that often passes for popular science. -- MetroFine offers persuasive proof that many of the claims we commonly swallow about male and female brains are based on very bad science indeed. Her entire book ... is worth a read, and perhaps should be taught in high school and college science classes. Maybe if young women were exposed to the truth about their brains, they'd no longer feel like they had to chuck their gender overboard in order to pursue their dreams. -- Anna North, JezebelWith Delusions of Gender, we welcome a brilliant feminist critic of the neurosciences ... In a book that sparkles with wit, which is easy to read but underpinned by substantial scholarship and a formidable 100-page bibliography, she attacks the ready generalisations on sexual differences made by neuroscientists and their media exegetes ... every page of Fine's brilliant, spiky book reminds us that science is part of culture and that the struggle against sexism in the neurosciences and the struggle against sexism in society are intimately linked. Read her, enjoy and learn. -- Hilary Rose, THESAn excellent introduction to the scientific method ... mind-opening ... prepare to be a relative expert on the subject. -- British Neuroscience Association BulletinA pinnacle piece of feminist literature, which I thoroughly recommend and could quote all day. -- Fran Hall, Huffington Post[a] brilliant debunking of "neuro-sexism" ... a powerful case that who we are is much more closely attuned to the culture that surrounds us, than to the biology of our brains. -- MslexiaFor anyone interested in the brain, research methods, applied science, gender, parenting, the workplace, human nature or general sass, this book is an absolute must read. -- Cyndi Chen, Huffington PostPopular science writing at its best ... beautifully and accessibly written ... Book SynopsisSexuality is a fascinating phenomenon. Familiar to us all, it pervades the personal, social and cultural areas of life; it also remains an elusive and confusing aspect of our existence. Within a range of disciplines, gender studies, psychology, psychoanalysis and sociology to name but a few, great strides have been made in enriching our understandings of sexuality and it's wide variations of practice, identity, orientation and relationship forms, across context and across culture. The understandings that existential philosophy and psychotherapy can contribute have often been overlooked as they frequently languish one by one, in hard to access journals. Book SynopsisThis book uncovers normative assumptions, practices and discourses as central to the production of difference which manifests as gender and sexual inequality and other forms of disadvantage and discrimination in health and healthcare. The strength of these perspectives is in critiquing the increasing power of biomedical sciences in order to contest the hegemony of unexamined healthcare assumptions that deny difference and thereby sustain inequality. These queer and critical theories trouble neoliberal healthcare economics and biomedical scientific norms that operate in every sphere of healthcare, providing a range of radical tools to destabilise, deconstruct or reimagine binaries, discourses, normative categories or moral ideals prevalent in the pursuit of health.Trade ReviewThis engaging, troubling, and beautifully-written book dives into the assumptions and paradoxes that shape our experiences of health care. It challenges systems of classification that attempt to reduce human complexity to a label by recognizing the fluid, hybrid nature of contemporary identities. Thus, it expands our understanding of queer theory and queer practice that aims to "undo normativity". The integration of theory and narrative is masterful, and the book's messages are both timely and timeless. • Gender Dysphoria: A Therapeutic Model for Working

Karnac Books Gender Dysphoria: A Therapeutic Model for Working

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn recent years, there has been an explosion in the number of children and young people who diagnose themselves as gender dysphoric, or trans. In the UK, and worldwide, there is a growing tendency to refer them on to ‘specialist’ gender services almost as soon as they express any confusion or distress about their biological sex or gender identity. Due to the rapidly rising numbers and various pressures on the system, patients are increasingly likely to be offered life-altering medication and/or surgical treatments, often with little exploration of their emotional world. As so little is yet known or understood regarding this increase in gender incongruent patients, it seems precipitous to proceed onto physical treatments before any assessment work is undertaken. Many who present as gender dysphoric have complex needs with comorbid problems such as autism, histories of abuse or trauma, social phobias, depression, eating disorders, and other mental health symptoms. Therefore, all aspects of the individual’s life deserve thorough assessment and therapeutic work. This book is aimed primarily at clinicians working in the field to provide a model for understanding, assessing, and treating gender dysphoria. The model uses a psychoanalytic framework to help explain disturbed states of mind and how psychic defences can be enlisted unconsciously to avoid overwhelming psychic pain. This offers professionals a way of trying to think with, and offer understanding to, their trans identifying clients. Clinical examples are given to illustrate these processes and promote the understanding of transgender children, adolescents, and young people and their internal worlds, their thinking, and their interpersonal relationships. As well as clinical exploration and understanding, the book includes an overview of the current political, social, and clinical environments which have all impacted on the clinical care of trans identifying individuals. As well as professional and trainee clinicians, this book might also prove useful to parents, other professionals, and possibly the gender dysphoric person too.Trade ReviewIn this timely, necessary book, Susan and Marcus Evans provide key insights into what adequate psychotherapeutic explorations of gender dysphoria should look like […] This book is a must-read not only for those working with gender dysphoria but also those who wish to expand their thinking on this cutting-edge work when dealing with the unbearableness of catastrophic anxiety. -- Hessel Willemsen, International Journal of Forensic Psychotherapy, 4:2This book is as thoughtful as it is necessary. Every responsible clinician and therapist who treats children and adolescents must read it – and read it carefully. -- Abigail Shrier, journalist and author of ‘Irreversible Damage: Teenage Girls and the Transgender Craze’I highly recommend this sensitive and timely book to laypersons and professionals who are interested in learning about the complex, controversial, and contemporary subject of gender dysphoria. The authors, Susan and Marcus Evans, are open, compassionate, non-judgemental, and able to tolerate uncertainty in their understanding of those who experience gender dysphoria, are transitioning, or detransitioning. Their psychoanalytically oriented therapeutic model takes into account the individual’s development, family, culture, and political environment. I think the reader will especially appreciate the additional attention paid to the response of adolescents, emotionally unstable personality disordered people, and suicidal individuals to gender dysphoria. -- Donald Campbell, past President of the British Psychoanalytical Society and former Secretary General of the International Psychoanalytical AssociationGender dysphoria is increasingly being seen as a part of the spectrum of human diversity. This has resulted in a profoundly reductionistic and decontextualised clinical approach to gender distress. The authors draw on their extensive clinical experience to illustrate how gender dysphoria cannot be understood without understanding the developmental and relational contexts within which it arises. Their detailed case examples document the unique psychic landscapes of people suffering gender dysphoria, illuminating how the ubiquitous “born in the wrong body” conceptualisation can leave vast areas of historical and current lived experience unaddressed. The authors utilise a psychoanalytic lens to understand the experience of both patient and therapist in therapeutic work with gender dysphoria, in a way that is both accessible and insightful. This will be an invaluable reference for those seeking to go beyond the surface to work at depth with gender dysphoria. This work is remarkable for its bravery in presenting a perspective on gender dysphoria that is increasingly being excluded from social and clinical discourse. -- Roberto D’Angelo, Training and Supervising Analyst, Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles and President of the Society for Evidence-Based Gender MedicineThis clear, excellent, clinically based account is very timely. It will help those who want to find their way through the confusing and often contentious writings on the subject of gender identity. It is well founded on experience of helping and working with people who do not feel at home in their bodies, particularly in regard to their sexual identity. They bring to the subject an unusual amount of clinical experience of this specialised psychological area. I strongly recommend it to those in the psychological, medical, and social fields, as well as to anyone who wants an informed account of a confused and confusing subject. -- Dr Ronald Britton, FRCPsych, Distinguished Fellow, British Psychoanalytical SocietyGender Dysphoria is a thoughtful and timely contribution to the current controversy around gender dysphoria, how it is thought about and how it is treated when help is sought. […] The book would clearly be of interest to anyone working with this client group, but I also found it a valuable resource in terms of thinking about the adolescent state of mind. […] Gender Dysphoria is an important book and a valuable contribution to the current debate. The book would grace the shelf of any trainee or practising therapist. -- Helen Lowe, registered member of BACP – BACP Healthcare Counselling and Psychotherapy Journal Jan 2022'What distinguishes the transgender from the gender dysphoric? Research in this area is not as advanced as we would like, and there is a dearth of good data. While this book does not reflect on gender dysphoric individuals for whom transition may be the right decision and have a positive outcome, it does add a great deal to the argument that careful thought is vital in the process of considering such a move. Transition may, or may not, be in the best interests of the individual. But maintaining a position of neutrality and enquiring curiosity, neither pro- nor anti-transition but pro-thought, is a point repeatedly made by the authors.' -- Alan Colam, International Journal of Psychoanalysis, 2023, (104)(6):1139-1142Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface by David Bell Foreword by Stephen B. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe increase in the number of non-binary children and adults in our society raises important treatment questions as well as much controversy. It seems essential that analysts and candidates grapple with the challenges this change in society presents. As we struggle in our psychoanalytic societies to diversify our membership and broaden our understanding of difference, this collection offers an opportunity for further discussion and study of one of the most important issues of our time. The opening essay by editor Shari Thurer provides a clear overview of recent cultural changes and the evolution of thinking about gender identification by the American Psychoanalytic Association. Next is an autobiographical essay by long-term non-binary individual Robin Haas plus a clinical reflection on Haas’ contribution by Rita Teusch. A recent account of an individual becoming non-binary from Francesca Spence is followed by the reactions of their parents, L. Harry Spence and Robin Ely. After that are psychoanalytic thoughts about the body and gender by Malkah Notman and reflections on gender from Dan Jacobs. The book ends with an extensive bibliography on the subjects of transsexuality and non-binary gender by Oren Gozlan Beyond the Binary: Essays on Gender introduces readers to current ideas about gender fluidity and choice, as well as giving voice to those who have chosen to be non-binary. This is a must-read for all practising clinicians that will help broaden their perspective on this growing issue. This is the fourth publication sponsored by the Library Committee of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and the first published by Phoenix.Trade Review‘Gender is always arriving, and psychoanalysts seem always to be chasing its coattails. Most often this chase has been an effort to corral gender: to capture, categorize, and conclude. Beyond the Binary – a collection of essays written as history, memoir, guide, critique, bibliography – works to move past the capture of categories. This monograph is possessed of a beguiling intimacy that engages the reader to rethink gender, gendered embodiment, and the analytic enterprise in listening to gender, its vicissitudes, and discontents.’ -- Ken Corbett, Clinical Assistant Professor, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy‘Beyond The Binary is a deeply personal and beautiful collection of reflections about contemporary understandings of gender in the psychoanalytic community. Eloquently written and accessible to all who are curious, it impresses through its inclusivity and compelling engagement between the reader and its authors.’ -- Dr Daniel Anderson, psychiatrist and group analyst, author of 'The Body of the Group: Sexuality and Gender in Group Analysis'‘Psychoanalysis originated within a nineteenth-century, binary view conflating sexuality with gender. In this matrix, Freud hypothesized a biological, drive-driven, cross-cultural universal theory of mind. Times have changed. Today’s nontraditional gender presentations instead rely on individual subjectivities that call into question universalizing, cisnormative beliefs. These new clinical presentations also challenge psychoanalysts to move beyond procrustean developmental theories, theories that all too frequently lead to countertransferential impositions of therapists’ subjectivity onto patients. Beyond the Binary offers a good introduction for therapists wishing to rethink what they think they know about gender and how it affects their clinical practices.’ -- Jack Drescher, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University, Adjunct Professor, New York University, Training and Supervising Analyst, William Alanson White InstituteTable of ContentsIntroduction Rita Teusch 1. Book SynopsisLife for girls is a battle of contrasting expectations, being told you should be 'empowered' but also be a 'good girl', putting others first but still striving for perfection yourself. This conflict, internalizing expectations of an impossible standard, has lead to an explosion in mental-health and anxiety-related disorders in young women. The traditional narrative of education feeds the perception that girls are good. They achieve, work hard, are co-operative. They achieve better grades. But where do these high achievers disappear to? They aren't becoming CEOs, politicians or social leaders. Women are still disproportionately the family carers and domestic managers. This book explores: * research around biological difference, and how our schools encode gendered expectations. * how our curricula can provide role-models as well as modes of thinking, valuing traditionally feminine traits as equal to masculine * using psychological approaches to develop girls' independence. * how school systems and leadership can model approaches to encourage all students to create a gender-balanced environment. With practical questions and suggestions at the end of each chapter, this book is a guide to the research and a tool to help teachers and leaders shape a genuinely empowering school experience for young women.

    2 in stock

Book Synopsis'A revolution is underway in how we think about human variation. It has the potential to transform the social and political landscape, sweeping away walls and fences that stop so many people from fully participating. Psychotherapy should be in the vanguard of this revolution, but it isn't,' writes Nick Totton in this bold analysis of human difference. His aim is to challenge and also help the reader who self-defines as 'normal'- be they talking therapist, body therapist, client or anyone else - to interrogate their own normality, and hopefully to relinquish the word and all the privileges it brings. It is time, he writes, 'to dismantle that identity, pull down that statue, abandon that high plinth and rest on the solid ground of difference'. Then, he argues, psychotherapy practitioners may be in a position to learn from their clients how best to work with them. The book addresses differences of bodily capacity, gender and lifestyle differences, differences of skin colour and neuro differences. It also tackles differences between the human and non-human beings who inhabit the Earth. Totton's call is for recognition that we share this planet, and that creating standards of 'normality' leads to exclusion as well as inclusion, with all the psychological and other harms that brings.Trade Review'Clinically, this book is a must-read. Nick Totton wants therapists to be aware of their destructive potential if they fail to manage the idea of normality in their work – and in their lives. Some readers might protest that they are just too sophisticated to believe in any such notion. They are wrong. If we are honest, we are often servants of the normal. We ignore the shadow implications when we refer to ‘appropriateness’ or ‘maturity’ or ‘individuation’ or ‘the depressive position’. Crucially, we need to see through the idea of tolerance to recognise that difference and plurality is all there is. Totton has managed once again to blend theory and practice to the benefit of clinicians of all levels of experience. The book is a call for discussion and for action lest we continue to do damage while seeking to do good.'-- Professor Andrew Samuels, author of Persons, Passions, Psychotherapy, Politics -- 'In this radical and beautifully emancipatory work, Nick Totton dismantles the concept of ‘normal people’, shows how the cultural construction of ‘normality’ lurks at the root of multiple forms of social power inequality and alienation, and makes a compelling case for abandoning the whole notion that anyone is ‘normal’ so that we can more fully embrace human variation and equality. Although Totton is a noted psychotherapist and concludes each section of the book with insights on integrating these ideas into therapy, Different Bodies is really for everyone – a must-read for students and professionals in the social sciences, for educators and managers, and for anyone who’s ever thought of themselves as ‘normal’ or worried that they weren’t. Written in clear, friendly, accessible language, this book is a crowning achievement of Totton’s long and brilliant career – a book with the power to change lives and help us to usher in a better tomorrow.' -- Nick Walker, PhD, author of Neuroqueer Heresies -- 'This groundbreaking book offers a necessary re-orientation for body psychotherapy that challenges from the inside notions to do with normativity. I read it with relief, finding in it anchors and stepping stones to explore what inclusivity means from an embodied intersectional perspective. I appreciate the searingly enfleshed way Totton challenges us to look at our biases, reminding us that the main site of oppression is in our bodies, and that our cognitive bias towards the normative body has to be resolutely unpacked so that there is a possibility of critiquing and changing our own somaticism and normativism. I see this work as essential reading for psychotherapy students. It will be on our reading list for sure.' -- Anne Marie Keary , Course leader, Body and Intersectionality, Minster Centre, London -- 'In Different Bodies, Nick Totton takes the bubbling concerns, challenges, identified and unidentified blindspots in perceptions of bodies, gathers the threads and pulls the whole concept of embodiment forward in one agile movement. This book is deft, provocative and refreshingly alive in its engagement with the fast-developing field of thinking about diversity. This is an astute synthesis of ethics, therapy, social justice, philosophy, feminism, queer thinking, anti-racism, disability theory, neurodiversity research, literature, political analysis, ecology and much more… Totton manages the extraordinary feat of being both erudite – with a stunningly broad range of references – and yet very down to earth and clear in his writing. He addresses the complexities, contradictions, and the endemic prejudices that have shaped our modern culture. But – to use his image – he is willing to pull down the statue. He re-examines the foundations and proposes – with humility and full acknowledgement of others’ contributions – new ways of thinking and languaging around many aspects of diversity. This is a book everyone needs to read – it goes so wide that I guarantee no one can say they understand all this or they have heard it before. Nick Totton brings into the foreground the voices of a dynamic, articulate, colourful, rebellious and celebratory countermovement. This is a radical updating of what embodiment means and can be.' -- Roz Carroll, co-editor of What is Normal? Psychotherapists Explore the Question -- 'Different Bodies is an invitation and clarion call to go beyond questioning and reflecting into a far deeper and more vulnerable place of confronting our own pictures and ways of processing. Nick brings everything he has to this invitation – his passion, strength, determination to understand more, his humility and his humanity. He also brings a compassionate understanding of how he, you, they and I can struggle to embrace our much-needed relational development. I experience his book as inviting me into the unknown, over and over. It is a glorious and difficult challenge, framed in the honouring of many writers, thinkers and activists and moving what is seen as the marginal to the centre. I am deeply grateful for Nick's critique and his support for us all to do better.' -- Carmen Joanne Ablack, President of European Association for Body Psychotherapy and Director of Psychotherapy Gestalt Centre London -- 'Nick challenges our concepts of normality, normal bodies, normal brains, normal genders and invites us to examine ourselves, rather than focus on others. Exploring gender and neurodiversity is very on-point, and for therapists this is absolutely essential reading right now. The book is informative and challenging. Heartily recommended! Especially if you are cisgender, heterosexual and neurotypical.' -- Dominic Davies, trainer, clinical sexologist and practice consultant, founder of Pink Therapy -- 'Nick Totton’s Different Bodies is a welcome contribution to psychotherapy. It invites us to question what counts as normal and how ideas about normality impact psychotherapeutic work with clients. Using critical race theory, disability studies, queer theory, transgender studies, body and animal studies, Totton asks what it means to be human. He advocates for a turn to animals and animal studies along with nature to displace ‘human supremacy’ in the psychotherapeutic encounter. This book will be of interest to psychotherapists interested in ethics, environmentalism. and social justice. It will also appeal to those who live by choice, or necessity, outside and apart from white, masculine, cisgender, able-bodied, and heterosexual ideas about normality.' -- Sheila L. Simon & Schuster Sorted: Growing Up, Coming Out, and Finding My

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisAn unflinching and endearing memoir from LGBTQ+ advocate Jackson Bird about how he finally sorted things out and came out as a transgender man. When Jackson Bird was twenty-five, he came out as transgender to his friends, family, and anyone in the world with an internet connection. Assigned female at birth and raised as a girl, he often wondered if he should have been born a boy. Jackson didn’t share this thought with anyone because he didn’t think he could share it with anyone. Growing up in Texas in the 1990s, he had no transgender role models. He barely remembers meeting anyone who was openly gay, let alone being taught that transgender people existed outside of punchlines. In this “soulful and heartfelt coming-of-age story” (Jamia Wilson, director and publisher of the Feminist Press), Jackson chronicles the ups and downs of growing up gender-confused. Illuminated by journal entries spanning childhood to adolescence to today, he candidly recalls the challenges and loneliness he endured as he came to terms with both his gender and his bisexual identity. With warmth and wit, Jackson also recounts how he navigated the many obstacles and quirks of his transition––like figuring out how to have a chest binder delivered to his NYU dorm room and having an emotional breakdown at a Harry Potter fan convention. From his first shot of testosterone to his eventual top surgery, Jackson lets you in on every part of his journey—taking the time to explain trans terminology and little-known facts about gender and identity along the way. “A compassionate, tender-hearted, and accessible book for anyone who might need a hand to hold as they walk through their own transition or the transition of a loved one” (Austin Chant, author of Peter Darling), Sorted demonstrates the power and beauty in being yourself, even when you’re not sure who “yourself” is.Trade Review“A soulful and heartfelt coming-of-age story that celebrates the enduring power of self-determination and dignity.” —Jamia Wilson, Director and Publisher of the Feminist Press“Jackson Bird doesn’t have to share his life or any details about his transition with us, but we are so fortunate that he has. He’s an incredible educator in the field of gender and sexuality where his patience and good-humor make everyone feel included in the conversation. This book is a particularly valuable resource for anyone looking for insights into the trans experience in order to support their loved ones.” —Paul DeGeorge, Harry and the Potters"[Bird's] tale of self-realization is one he fearlessly and relentlessly shares with the world—and the world is better for it. So it's no surprise that Sorted is as fresh, clear, funny, and essential as the man himself." —Melissa Anelli, New York Times bestselling author of Harry, A History“I wish I had read this book ten years ago–or, better yet, I wish everyone around me had read it. Bird is a gentle and charming narrator, weaving the story of his own life together with enough educational asides to ensure that all of his readers can follow along. Sorted is thoughtful and affirming in its examination of evolving trans narratives and terminology, honoring both the past and present of trans identity. A compassionate, tender-hearted, and accessible book for anyone who might need a hand to hold as they walk through their own transition or the transition of a loved one.” —Austin Chant, author of Peter Darling

Book SynopsisThis book analyzes men’s experiences and perceptions regarding their participation in infidelity and offers a glimpse into the inner workings of their most intimate relationships, as well as the ways men negotiate marriages that fall short of their expectations.Using a sample collected from the online dating service Ashley Madison, this book finds that contrary to gendered social scripts, the men in this study described motivations for outside partnerships that were not rooted in the desire for sexual pleasure or variety. Rather, men described those relationships as an outlet to soothe their bruised egos, receive attention and validation from a romantic partner, and to fight their feelings of emasculation. These infidelities thus provide support and praise, and aid in the processing of complex emotions. This in-depth analysis provides a unique insight into men’s experiences of sexuality and masculinity, and will be of keen interest to those seeking to understand male infidelity from a sociological perspective, across gender studies, psychology, counselling, and beyond.Table of ContentsChapter 1 The C-Word (Cheater): Infidelity as the Ultimate Threat Chapter 2 Researcher Seeks Cheating Husbands: Recruiting a Closeted Population Chapter 3 “Men need their egos pumped up regularly”: Primary Partnerships Sow the Seeds of Men’s Doubt Chapter 4 “We need a witness to our lives”: Outside Partners as Outsourced Relational Managers Chapter 5 “If I was a good enough man, she’d be jumping on top of me, right?”: Marital Beds Breed Self-Doubt Chapter 6 “I seek a partner who actually wants me to make up for lost time”: The Girlfriend Experience in Outside Partnerships Helps Reduce FOMO Chapter 7 “Guys who suck in bed are the butt of jokes”: The Pressure to Perform Chapter 8 “It’s my job to make her orgasm”: Women’s Orgasm Provision as Responsibility and Special Skill Chapter 9 So, What Does all of this Mean Anyway?: Making Sense of Men’s Participation in Infidelity

Book SynopsisThis book provides a feminist psychological analysis of contemporary resistance to sexual harassment in and around #MeToo. It explores how women’s assumed empowerment in postfeminist and neoliberal feminist discourses has shaped understandings of sexual harassment and social responses to it. This exploration is grounded in the trajectories of feminist activism and psychological theory about sexual harassment. Lazard addresses the gendered binary of female victims and male perpetrators in contemporary victim politics and the treatment of perpetrators within postfeminist and neoliberal frames. In doing so, the author unpacks the cultural conditions which support or deny who gets to speak and be heard in #MeToo politics. This book will be a valuable resource not only for scholars and students from within the psychological sciences and gender studies, but for the wider social sciences and anyone interested in the psychological grounding of the #MeToo movement.Trade Review“Lazard effectively demonstrates how entrenched assumptions around normative heterosexuality are, and how extensively neoliberal ideologies and intersecting power relations have shaped our understanding of sexual harassment and victimisation. Accordingly, readers are provided with effective conceptual tools with which to analyse the #MeToo movement and its impact on society. This book is a very welcome addition to the literature on sexual violence and feminist thought and deserves a place on every researcher’s bookshelf.” (Lois Catrin Donnelly, Feminism & Psychology, Vol. 32 (1), 2022)“This book would be of greatest interest to those who want to learn more about feminism, postfeminsm and neoliberal feminism and the approach of each to victimization.” (Renata Miljević-Riđički, International Journal of Emotional Education, Vol. 14 (1), June, 2022)Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction -#MeToo and feminismsChapter 2: Workplace Harassment, Hollywood’s Casting Couch and Neoliberalism Chapter 3: Women, Sexual Harassment and Victim Politics Chapter 4: The Sexual Harassment of Hollywood Men Chapter 5: Sexual Harassment and Sexual Predators in Neoliberal Times Chapter 6: Conclusion - Sexual Harassment and Speaking Rights

Book SynopsisThis book challenges the perception of the psychiatric chart as a neutral and objective text. The chapters included in this book coalesce to reveal the psychiatric chart as a text that is, in fact, “storied” by institutional ideology that reflects, reinforces, reinterprets, and, at times, resists gendered, raced, sexualized, and classed norms, values, and presuppositions. Intersectional analysis highlights the nuanced ways in which dominant ideologies are activated in chart documentation to produce qualitatively specific psychiatric narratives of distress and related responses in the psychiatric institution. The book serves as a much-needed resource for mental health professionals, education and training programs, and researchers that meaningfully takes into account the social and structural materiality of people’s lives and its impact on experiences of distress. It will also appeal to scholars investigating equity in health care across the fields of Critical Psychology, Disability Studies, Social Work, Allied Health, Mad Studies and Social Justice.Trade Review“The volume should be of interest to a readership concerned with interdisciplinarity and dialogue across academic and practitioner disciplinary boundaries. In it, Ella Ben Hagai and Eileen Zurbriggen explore foundational ideas from queer thought and transgender theory including the instability of gender, variation in sexualities, intersectional theory, and trans writers’ rejection of the “born in the wrong body” narrative. Book SynopsisTraditionally, men’s mental health woes have been attributed to male stubbornness and rigid notions of masculinity. However, there is growing recognition that mental health issues in men are socially determined by a range of factors including family, educational, occupational, and legal issues. These and a variety of other social issues have been collectively labelled ‘men’s issues’ and are being increasingly linked to negative men’s mental health outcomes. This book gives an overview of men’s mental health as well as related men’s issues, adopting a public-health-inspired approach examining the research linking social exposures and mental health outcomes. The book is unique in that it synthesizes and explores men’s issues, men’s mental health, and social determinants in a holistic and integrated manner through assessment of the social scientific and psychiatric literature. In this book, the author discusses the social determinants of men’s mental health and accompanying psychosocial interventions, moving beyond one-dimensional discussions of masculinity. Book SynopsisThis book urges those invested in social justice for 2SLGBTQ people to interrogate the biomedical model of mental illness beyond the diagnoses that specifically target gender and sexual dissidence. In this first comprehensive application of Mad Studies to queer and trans experiences of mental distress, Pilling advances a broad critique of the biomedical model of mental illness as it pertains to 2SLGBTQ people, arguing that Mad Studies is especially amenable to making sense of queer and trans madness. Based on empirical data from two qualitative research studies, this book includes analyses of inpatient chart documentation from a psychiatric hospital and interviews with those who have experienced distress. Using an intersectional lens, Pilling critically examines what constitutes mental health treatment and the impacts of medical strategies on mad queer and trans people. Ultimately, Queer and Trans Madness: Struggles for Social Justice explores the emancipatory promise of queer and trans madness, advocating for more resources to respond to crisis and distress in ways that are non-coercive, non-carceral, and honour autonomy as well as interdependence within 2SLGBTQ communities. Book SynopsisThis edited book presents a comprehensive guide to the research, challenges and differing perspectives within mental health for sexual minority populations in the UK. Drawing on clinical, social, health and community psychology perspectives, it brings the urgency of this topic back to the fore, providing insight into some of ways we understand and make sense of the increased prevalence of poorer mental health in these populations. Using an intersectional approach, a broad range of experts from across academia and practice explore the specific threat and discrimination faced by sexual minorities and investigate the high prevalence of poor mental health, health risk behaviours and psychological distress in these groups. The volume also offers innovative insight as to ways in which the disparities experienced by sexual minorities may be addressed. Ideal for practitioners in mental health and sexuality, as well as psychologists, policy makers, and academics alike interested in mental health, sexuality, public health, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, or counselling, this collection features wide array of qualitative and quantitative sources to describe the current state of the art with an interdisciplinary lens.Table of ContentsWhat: Introduction1. Book SynopsisThis book is amongst the first of its kind in presenting a case study of voyeurism from a forensic psychology perspective and within the societal context. Simon Duff provides an in-depth description of the assessment, formulation, and treatment of a voyeur and offers a theoretical basis for the behaviour. The book begins by covering a variety of explanations and previous treatments for voyeurs, including learning theories and the aversive treatments that they give rise to. It then moves on to focus on one specific case study, a young man who has exhibited diversity in his voyeuristic offending, before examining relevant details of his experiences in order to develop a formulation of his thinking and behaviour. The formulation and resultant intervention are clearly and accessibly presented, followed by a discussion of how this case provides direction for further research, developments in our theoretical basis for understanding voyeurism, and directions for assessment and intervention.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction.- Chapter 2 Voyeurism in context.- Chapter 3 Voyeurism.- Chapter 4 Explanations of voyeurism.- Chapter 5 Approaches to treatment.- Chapter 6 The case study: KS.- Chapter 7 Clinical analysis and formulation.- Chapter 8 Intervention.- Chapter 9 Outcomes and discussion.

Book SynopsisThis empirical study describes and analyzes adolescents’ affective and cognitive processes involved in learning mathematics. Correlation-regression statistics reveal that positive emotions positively correlated with learning strategy use, whilst negative emotions negatively correlated with learning strategy use in general; math self-concept and achievement values positively correlated with positive emotions, and negatively correlated with negative emotions. In addition, math achievement was compromised in particular by negative environmental factors and negative affect. Furthermore, math self-concept was found to mediate the impact of environmental factors on emotions. Since math self-concept could buffer negative learning environment’s impact on negative affect, maintaining and enhancing students’ math self-concept is important in both school and home contexts.Table of ContentsContents: Affective aspects of learning – Adolescents’ affective, motivational, and cognitive processes in learning mathematics – Math self-concept – Achievement values – Achievement emotions and motivation – Learning strategies – Self-regulated learning – Learning environment – Dynamic affective-cognitive learning processes and outcome model – Pedagogical implications: multiple channels to support development and enhance achievement – Cultural impact on achieving motivation and emotions.
