Channel View Publications Ltd Positive Psychology in SLA
Book SynopsisPositive psychology is the scientific study of how human beings prosper and thrive. This is the first book in SLA dedicated to theories in positive psychology and their implications for language teaching, learning and communication. Chapters examine the characteristics of individuals, contexts and relationships that facilitate learning: positive emotional states such as love, enjoyment and flow, and character traits such as empathy, hardiness and perseverance. The contributors present several innovative teaching ideas to bring out these characteristics among learners. The collection thus blends new teaching techniques with cutting-edge theory and empirical research undertaken using qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods approaches. It will be of interest to SLA researchers, graduate students, trainee and experienced teachers who wish to learn more about language learning psychology, individual differences, learner characteristics and new classroom practices.Trade ReviewWith a decidedly positive outlook on applied linguistics stemming from positive psychology, this volume piques the interest of teachers and researchers alike by shedding light on language learning and empowerment, happiness, resilience, melody, stress reduction and enjoyment as well as success. No wonder that this book is a joy to read! * Kata Csizér, Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary *This volume offers a refreshing perspective on the process of learning and teaching new languages, highlighting the diverse ways in which learners and teachers draw on the many positive aspects of the human condition in their development as users of a non-native language. Without understating the difficulties that trouble language learning, this book provides a well-grounded basis for future studies using theoretical perspectives from positive psychology, and inspires teaching practices that recognize the human potential to thrive and grow. * Kimberley A. Noels, University of Alberta, Canada *This book is about the dynamics of happiness in language learning, the ripples that interact with other ripples, not necessarily in unison, but providing a goal and resources for processes of development. The contributions aim to show the positive sides of language teaching and learning without ignoring or denying the negative ones. They strive to reach a balance that allows for human agency to frame existences and hopes. The authors aim to move beyond the ‘Don’t worry, be happy’ level by using carefully defined concepts and rigorous methodology. * Kees de Bot, University of Groningen, Netherlands *Second language learning is a new area for Positive Psychology and these authors have found that it is a surprising and remarkable aide. * Martin Seligman, Director of the Penn Positive Psychology Center, University of Pennsylvania, USA and author of Flourish: A New Understanding of Happiness and Well-Being - and How To Achieve Them *The book defends itself as a worthy source of knowledge on the theory, research and practice of positive psychology in specific areas of foreign language teaching and learning. I fully endorse and recommend the volume for its expertise and scholarly discipline on the one hand and for the excitement and creativity it encourages on the other. -- Danuta Gabryś-Barker University of Silesia, Poland * SSLLT 6 (3). 2016. 541-546 *MacIntyre et al.’s edited volume is a thorough work on the application of positive psychological principles on applied linguistics and language learning endeavours. The theories reviewed, the data analysed and the practices presented, will certainly appeal to scholars, curriculum developers, language teaching practitioners, teachers’ educators and pre-service language teachers. The volume is accessible and reads quite easily. -- Jose Ignacio Aguilar Río, Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3 University, France * LINGUIST List: Vol-28-382, 2017 *Table of Contents1. Liverpool University Press Affective Disorders: Emotion in Colonial and
Book SynopsisAn Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and through Knowledge Unlatched. Situated at the intersection of postcolonial studies, affect studies, and narratology, Affective Disorders explores the significance of emotion in a range of colonial and postcolonial narratives. Through close readings of Naguib Mahfouz, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, and Upamanyu Chatterjee, among others, Bede Scott argues that literary representations of emotion need not be interpreted solely at the level of character, individual psychology, or the contingencies of plotting, but could also be related to broader sociopolitical forces. We thus find episodes of anger that serve as a collective response to the 'modernity' of wartime Cairo, feelings of jealousy that are inspired by the slave economy of imperial Brazil, and an overwhelming sense of boredom that emerges, in the late eighties, out of the bureaucratic procedures of the Indian Administrative Service. Affective Disorders also explores in some detail the formal consequences of these feelings – the way in which affective states such as anger or jealousy can often destabilize narratives, provoking crises of representation, generic ambivalence, and discursive rupture. By emphasizing the social origin of these emotions, and by analysing their influence on literary discourse, this study provides a deeper understanding of the relationship between various sociopolitical forces and the affective and aesthetic 'disorders' to which they give rise.Trade Review‘Affective Disorders is a skilful, impeccably researched contribution, with much to offer to affect studies, narratology, and postcolonial work on emotion.' Alice Millington, Journal of Postcolonial Writing'The project [is] an ambitious one given the author deals with two independent empires, three disparate centuries, and four different countries. As one proceeds through the riveting pages of the book, however, one realizes the scholarly acumen and academic rigor that Scott brings to bear on his work [...] that undoubtedly make it a pleasurable read. [...] One must acknowledge [its] nuanced, compelling, and erudite arguments. Collective Ink Emotional Repatterning: Healing Emotional Pain by
Book SynopsisWe have access to many tools to help us deal with the rising tide of anxiety and depression: psychotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), medication, meditation, positive affirmations. These methodologies are increasingly popular and have been able to bring some relief to many. But in terms of permanent, deep change, these options are sorely limited because they work solely with the conscious mind rather than with the underlying subconscious beliefs that drive our behavior. Recent research on the brain has revealed that we are only aware of 5% of our brain activity, while the other 95% is subconscious. So, unless we work with both our conscious mind as well as our subconscious mind, we may find some decrease in our pain, but we will continue to struggle. Emotional Repatterning: Healing Emotional Pain by Rewiring the Brain provides insights, stories and examples from Lisa Samet's life and the lives of her patients, as well as practical tools to uncover the subconscious beliefs that are holding us back. It deepens the reader’s understanding of their own mind – the patterns of thinking and deep-seated beliefs that keep them feeling stuck and unhappy – and teaches skills to change both their thinking at the conscious level and their beliefs at the subconscious level.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Epistemology, Ethics, and Meaning in Unusually Personal Scholarship
Book SynopsisThis book uses Viktor Frankl’s Existential Psychology (logotherapy) to explore the ways some professors use unusually personal scholarship to discover meaning in personal adversity. A psychiatrist imprisoned for three years in Nazi concentration camps, Frankl believed the search for meaning is a powerful motivator, and that its discovery can be profoundly therapeutic. Part I begins with four stories of professors finding meaning. Using the case studies as a foundation, Part II investigates issues of epistemology and ethics in unusually personal research from an existential perspective. The book offers advice for graduate students and faculty who want to live and work more meaningfully in the academy.Table of Contents1. Introduction to Mesearch2. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Exploring the Translatability of Emotions:
Book SynopsisThis book offers an in-depth, cross-cultural and transdisciplinary discussion of the translatability of social emotions. The contributors are leading philosophers, semioticians, anthropologists, communication and translation theorists from Europe, America and Australia. Part I explores the translatability of emotions as a culturally embedded social behaviour that requires a contextualized interpretation of their origins and development in different social and cultural settings. These studies make useful preparations for the studies introduced in Part II that continue investigating the cultural and sociological influence of the development of social emotions with a special focus on the dialogical relation to the body and to others. Part III presses on delving into specific types of emotions which underscore social interactions at both the community and individual levels, such as dignity, (im-)politeness, self-regard and self-esteem. Finally, Part IV offers a further development on the preceding parts as it discusses problems of translation, expressibility and mass-medial communication of emotions. This book will engage translation scholars as well as those with a broader interest in the study and interpretation of emotions from different fields, perspectives and disciplines.Trade Review“This informative and up-to-date volume is an essential read for those interested in the interaction of emotion with language, meaning, consciousness, social practices and translation, particularly from a cross-cultural and transdisciplinary perspective. It provides valuable insights into the translatability of human emotions and serves as a foundation for further research and advancement in this emerging field.” (Yanjin Liu, Emotions: History, Culture, Society, Vol. 7 (1), 2023)“This volume’s strengths are, first and foremost, the fascinating nature of the topics. For those of us who are not widely read in the semiotics of emotions, we can delve into just about any chapter … . Another strength is the breadth and depth of the authors’ and editors’ knowledge. … it’s easy to see how this collection of essays would provide stimulating reading for graduate students and researchers in translation studies … .” (Derrin Pinto, Hispania, Vol. 106 (2), June, 2023)Table of ContentsIntroduction, Susan Petrilli.- Part I: On the Transaltability of Emotions.- Alterity and the Translatability of Emotions as the Foundation of Self, Language and Living Together; Susan Petrilli and Augusto Ponzio.- Why Emotions Translate, but Feelings Do Not: Insights from Peirce; Winfried Nöth.- Feeling and Its Unfolding; Lucia Santaella.- Body, Emotion and Semiosis: Translating Emotion into Action; Jacques Fontanille.- Part II: Speaking Emotions Listening to the Body and to Others.- Emotions as Discourse; Alphonso Lingis.- On a Biology of Emotions and Its role in Cultural Evolution; Elize Bisanz.- Emotion, Culture, and the Nature of Truth: For a Dialogical Philosophy; Wayne Cristaudo.- Part III: Becoming Conscious of Emotions and Social Conditioning.- Self-Regard and Disregarded Selves: A Peircean Approach to Several Social Emotions; Vincent Colapietro.- Language, Pragmatics, and Emotions: The Case of Impoliteness; Frank Nuessel.- Saving-Face: The Nonverbal Communicology of Basic Emotions; Richard Lanigan.- Part IV: Expressing Emotions between Mass-medial and Rhetorical Figures.- Emotional Wellbeing and the Semiotic Translation of Emojis; Marcel Danesi.- Transmediality and Translation of Emotions; Peeter Torop.- The Translator’s Mobilization of Social Emotions: A Behavioral-Economic Approach to the Rhetoric of Translation; Douglas Robinson

Book SynopsisHelp young children understand that it's okay to establish personal boundaries and change their minds. Physical and emotional awareness are key foundations of consent. We Check In with Each Other gives children a vocabulary to understand that they can change their minds at any time, develop and communicate personal boundaries, and build their social and emotional skills. The second book in the We Say What's Okay series, We Check In with Each Other follows Harrison as he checks in with himself and with his classmates throughout the day to see if they're still having fun and feeling safe. Using the book as a read-aloud, educators and families can model the language Harrison's teachers use to support children as they learn to listen to their body signals and respect the personal boundaries of others. The author, who hosts workshops and trainings on teaching consent for families and early childhood educators around the country, offers additional activities in the back of the book. Digital content includes a song from Peaceful Schools with downloadable audio files and sheet music. We Say What's Okay Series Teach the building blocks of consent in a child-friendly and developmentally appropriate way. Centered on a class of preschoolers, this series helps teach young children the social and emotional skills they need to understand the complexities of consent. Each book covers a consent theme, such as how to recognize the physical sensations that emotions create, look for body language cues, ask for and listen to choices, and know that our bodies have value. With believable, everyday situations and diverse characters, children can see themselves and others reflected in each story--and develop a vocabulary to communicate consent and feelings. Every book in the series is accompanied by a song from Peaceful Schools with downloadable audio files and sheet music.Trade Review"I really love the repetition of the messaging and the many examples the story offers to express the importance of checking in and communication that supports ongoing consent and body boundaries. And the informative breakdown in the back for caring adults is such a valuable support."--Melissa Pintor Carnagey, LBSW, founder of Sex Positive Families "I'm so thankful for this book that teaches the concept of checking in; this is an important step for consent. Lydia has once again created a diverse, inclusive, and easy to understand children's book that tackles an incredibly complex topic in a way that will make it tangible for children of all ages. I plan on using this book often with families, parents, and children to explore the topic of consent. Well done!"--Heather C. Thompson, MS, LPC, RPT, A Safe Place to Grow Counseling "Whether you're a parent, caregiver, or teacher, We Check In with Each Other is a three-for-one when it comes to helping children learn foundational lessons in consent! Throughout his school day, Harrison checks in on his feelings, checks in on his peers' interests, and accepts his peers' choices, even when that means there's a change in plans. This colorful book is foundational to some of the most important nuances that help kids develop healthy relationship skills they can use now and in the future."--Sarah Casper, founder of Comprehensive Consent

University of Minnesota Press The Affect Lab: The History and Limits of
Book SynopsisExamines how our understanding of emotion is shaped by the devices we use to measure it Since the late nineteenth century, psychologists have used technological forms of media to measure and analyze emotion. In The Affect Lab, Grant Bollmer examines the use of measurement tools such as electrical shocks, photography, video, and the electroencephalograph to argue that research on emotions has confused the physiology of emotion with the tools that define its inscription. Bollmer shows that the psychological definitions of emotion have long been directly shaped by the physical qualities of the devices used in laboratory research. To investigate these devices, The Affect Lab examines four technologies related to the history of psychology in North America: spiritualist toys at Harvard University, serial photography in early American psychological laboratories, experiments on “psychopaths” performed with an instrument called an Offner Dynograph, and the development of the “electropsychometer,” or “E-Meter,” by Volney Mathison and L. Ron Hubbard. Challenging the large body of humanities research surrounding affect theory, The Affect Lab identifies an understudied problem in formulations of affect: how affect is a construction inseparable from the techniques and devices used to identify and measure it. Ultimately, Bollmer offers a new critique of affect and affect theory, demonstrating how deferrals to psychology and neuroscience in contemporary theory and philosophy neglect the material of experimental, scientific research. Retail e-book files for this title are screen-reader friendly with images accompanied by short alt text and/or extended descriptions.Trade Review "Moving compellingly through a series of instruments drawn from the histories of experimental psychology, psychiatric photography, and spiritualism, Grant Bollmer provides an important materialist rebuke to the liberatory strain in affect theory, which frequently treats affect as ‘an eternal truth of the body rather than a momentary fragment.’"—David Parisi, author of Archaeologies of Touch: Interfacing with Haptics from Electricity to Computing "The Affect Lab argues that beneath affect theory lies media. Far from being natural or biological—and, most fundamentally, far from being universal—affect is the product of the concrete technical operations that are necessary to access it in the first place. By challenging affect theory to examine its own technical basis, The Affect Lab will reboot the field for our times and, in the process, fundamentally change our views of how affect operates and the roles it plays in lived experience."—Mark B. Cambridge University Press The Psychology of Happiness A Good Human Life
Book SynopsisWhen Thomas Jefferson placed 'the pursuit of happiness' along with life and liberty in The Declaration of Independence he was most likely referring to Aristotle's concept of happiness, or eudaimonia. Eudaimonia is not about good feelings but rather the fulfilment of human potentials. Fulfilment is made possible by virtue; the moderation of desire and emotion by reason. The Psychology of Happiness was the first book to bring together psychological, philosophical, and physiological theory and research in support of Aristotle's view. It examines the similarity between Aristotle's concept of virtue and modern cognitive theories of emotion. It discusses the discovery of human potentials, the development of virtue and its neurological basis, the mistaken idea that fulfilment is selfish, and several other issues related to the pursuit of a good human life.Trade Review'Franklin … reaches his own synthesis of Aristotle's philosophy and scientific psychology. This means that this book is suited for at least two audiences. It is an excellent introduction to Aristotle's philosophy and the ideas in psychology, which are relevant for thinking about the good life. Above that it is interesting for people who look for a synthesis in the burgeoning field of happiness research, and who do not like the hedonistic variants of happiness.' Basic Books What Doesnt Kill Us The New Psychology of
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewTerry Waite CBE "We live in a world in which suffering is endemic. In this book Stephen Joseph sounds a hopeful note. Suffering need not destroy." Robert J. Wicks, Professor, Loyola University Maryland, and author of Bounce: Living the Resilient Life "What Doesn't Kill Us seamlessly combines needed inspiration and the most advanced information about the new psychology of posttraumatic growth for those who have experienced great suffering. Stephen Joseph, one of the leading experts in the world on trauma, resilience, and growth, offers both compelling stories and practical information. What Doesn't Kill Us is a book of wisdom--both for those who have undergone great stress as well as for those who love and treat them. It is psychology at its best: honest, hopeful, helpful, and based on sound serious research. Reading it makes me proud to be a psychologist." Donald Meichenbaum, PhD Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and Research Director of the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment of Victims of Violence, Miami, Florida "Traumatised individuals have a story to tell, as well as re-author. Professor Stephen Joseph is compassionate, attentive listener and a sensitive and scholarly conveyer of this narrative process. He has ably blended his many years of research and clinical practice into an enlightened story of post traumatic growth. This a book that should be read by all who encountered trauma and those who love and treat them. Kudos to Professor Joseph for providing a needed new direction for the treatment of those who experience [posttraumatic stress disorder] and related challenges. This book is a clarion call for a Constructive Narrative Perspective to psychotherapy, filled with pathos and hope." Dr Gill Hicks MBE, survivor of the London Bombings, July 7, 2005 "What Doesn't Kill Us -- indeed does and can make us stronger as brilliantly presented by Professor Stephen Joseph and lived throughout my every day." Dr Kate Hefferon, Senior Lecturer, University of East London and author of Positive Psychology: Theory, research and applications "This is the book we have been waiting for Stephen Joseph to write. With decades of experience and knowledge, Joseph presents the wonderfully complex world of posttraumatic growth in an accessible and personable way. Not only does the book provide the most-up-to-date research, What Doesn't Kill Us offers tangible approaches to developing growth after trauma; a feat that will be valued by many." Dr Nigel Hunt, Associate Professor in Health Psychology, University of Nottingham "This is a caring and thoughtful account, arguing for the normality of post-traumatic stress as a process of adaptation. Professor Joseph presents a personal and positive perspective, showing how people can come through painful experiences and live fulfilling lives... His THRIVE model provides a coherent approach to helping traumatised people." Elaine Iljon Foreman, author of Fly Away Fear: Overcoming Your Fear of Flying "Convincingly challenging, highly enlightening, and compulsively readable, What Doesn't Kill Us is thoroughly recommended for both those who have and have not experienced trauma. A transformational new perspective." Elaine Fox, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at University of Essex "What Doesn't Kill Us is an insightful and entertaining account of the new psychology of resilience. Stephen Joseph brilliantly combines personal anecdote with cutting edge psychology to explain why all of us have the capacity to triumph over adversity. A must read if you ever wondered why most of us rebound so well after disaster, What Doesn't Kill Us is an invaluable guide for anyone wanting to know how to cope with trauma." Richard Bentall, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Liverpool "In this fascinating book, Stephen Joseph maps out the rarely explored positive consequences of trauma, reminding us that growth is possible even in the most adverse circumstances. Although essential reading for clinicians working with traumatized patients, What Doesn't Kill Us is so accessibly written that it should appeal to anyone interested in the human condition." John Harvey, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, University of Iowa "In What Doesn't Kill Us, Stephen Joseph brings his expertise as one of the world's most prolific and influential scholars of trauma and over two decades of clinical experience to bear in producing a literate and compelling book on growth from and through adversity. The book is replete with powerful story-lines of people who persevered in the face of great pain and loss: From Michael J. Fox to Viktor Frankl we learn how survivors lived Nietzsche's dictum of what doesn't kill you can make you stronger. Joseph gives voice to the non-famous and famous alike as he tells stories of survival and thriving, both in personal and global crises. All the while, the book is highly educational about the dynamics of posttraumatic growth and related concepts. It is a rare feat to produce a book that will appeal and be useful to the general public, as well as scholars and practitioners. Joseph has done so." Mick Cooper, Professor of Counseling, University of Strathclyde "Beautifully written, drawing on leading-edge scientific research to reveal one of humankind's noblest qualities: the capacity to find meaning and growth in the face of near-unbearable suffering." Stephen Regel, Honorary Associate Professor/Co-Director Centre for Trauma, Resilience and Growth, School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Nottingham "Stephen Joseph's book is inspirational and, not just for the lay reader but also for all therapists, regardless of their theoretical orientation, as trauma in inherent part of their work. It goes far beyond the narrow confines of current clinical approaches to working with trauma and posttraumatic stress and challenges all clinicians to think about what we actually say and do in the consulting room. He takes us along the path of post traumatic growth as an experienced and perceptive guide, opening up many new thought provoking therapeutic possibilities and avenues to facilitate post traumatic growth rather than merely deal with symptomatic change. His chapter on signposts to the facilitation of growth following adversity, through the acronym THRIVE has a simple elegance that everyone can adopt in our current uncertain times. To say that it is essential reading would be an understatement. It is essential as a survival guide to life." Vaughan Bell, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London "In an area beset by wishful thinking, Stephen Joseph makes the scientific case for how difficult times can lead to personal growth. What Doesn't Kill Us is a well argued and well evidenced challenge to the idea that trauma is necessarily a curse." Publishers Weekly "Informative and thoughtful." Kirkus Reviews "A sure-to-be-controversial, provocative challenge to prevailing wisdom on how to deal with stress." New York Journal of Books "What Doesn't Kill Us is accessible for all readers... Well worth the time to read, digest, and utilize in one's daily life."
