Nova Science Publishers Inc Handbook on the Psychology of Self-Esteem
Book SynopsisSelf-esteem is a widely studied topic within psychology. Recently, the connections between self-esteem and important life outcomes have been debated because studies have produced inconsistent findings. Many of these inconsistencies may be due to the fact that most studies have focused on self-esteem level without incorporating other aspects of self-esteem. This books provides information on using the temporal stability of self-esteem to better understand feelings of self-worth; variations in multi-dimensional physical self-concept; religion and self-esteem; self-esteem as a predictor of academic success in health professional degree students; effects on the level and relations of self-esteem in the early transition to secondary school in Germany; the role of siblings for children''s self-esteem; and several other topics.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Relationship Paradox: The Spiritual Quest for
Book SynopsisThis book is an exploration into the dynamics of interpersonal relationships, and how the spiritual quest for union is tempered by the human desire for freedom. Since being in an intimate relationship is not the cause of happiness, a major focus of this book is to help the readers understand the need to take responsibility for their own happiness. Only when people learn to understand their own happiness, regardless of being in a relationship, will they be able to cultivate a successful relationship because they want a relationship, and not because they think they need a relationship to be happy.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Psychology of Shame: New Research
Book SynopsisTo "feel ashamed" is perhaps one of the most studied human emotional experiences. Ironically, there is no agreement yet on what people mean when they say that they "feel ashamed". This can be reflected not only in the numerous definitions of the feeling but also in the numerous subjective understandings of it. In psychology, there are multiple definitions of shame. For example, Freud argued that shame was a reaction formation against sexual desires. In his eyes, the expression; "I feel ashamed" should be understood as being in the midst of an internal fight against pleasurable desires. In the later, psychodynamic tradition, the expression "I feel ashamed" should be understood as a scorning feeling that disable the client. This book discusses the psychology of shame. It explains the connection between shame and eating disorders; the role of shame in intimate and sexual violence; the psychological distress shame may cause in performing artists and athletes; positive interpersonal consequences of shame; the path to gelotophobia; the true meaning of feeling ashamed; and shame and masculinity in early China.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Emotional Intelligence: Current Evidence from
Book SynopsisIn the last two and a half decades, the concept of Emotional Intelligence has not only gained acceptance in the scientific community, but exploded all over the place, becoming a popular term used (and abused) by everyone. As the concept matured, two things happened: On one hand, more and more empirical evidence supported the concept''s applicability in a broad range of contexts and settings. On the other hand, the evidence put the early expectation of the concept in perspective, humbling pioneering claims of EI being the concept accounting for everything that traditional concepts (like intelligence, personality etc.) did not. Emotional intelligence has come of age, and as evidence explores new frontiers, practitioners explore the utility of EI-based intervention programs. So -- what''s new with Emotional Intelligence? This is exactly the aim of this book -- to provide readers interested in this new, promising concept, an updated view of research, and practice based on various models and views of the concept focusing on three fields in which progress seems to be most exciting: Psychophysiology and health, education and work and organisational life. Authors from around the world offer their diverse views, rich palettes of application and practice and raise questions that will lead future research and add to our understanding of the world.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Handbook on Emotion Regulation: Processes,
Book SynopsisEmotion regulation (ER), which refers to the ability to identify, experience, modulate, and express emotions, is critical to adaptive functioning. Although the term ER has been used synonymously with coping strategies, affect regulation, and self-regulation, it is important to differentiate ER from these other constructs to ensure optimal construct validity and accurate measurement. To this end, ER has been defined as "the process by which individuals influence which emotions they have, when they have them, and how they experience and express these emotions" (Gross, 1998 p. 275). Emotion is experienced in three primary ways: behaviourally, physiologically, and experientially (Gross, 1998); therefore, ER refers to strategies that alter these three aforementioned emotional processes. This book discusses the processes, cognitive effects, and social consequences of emotion regulation.

Investigating the relevance/importance of considering different cultural backgrounds and 2. By introducing emergent findings on self-kindness and 3. By highlighting the significance of self-care. Authors'' of the other chapters examine pain, compassion and the importance of two-way motivational communication in the medical field between patient and physician and the positive correlation between compassion, and physiological and psychological health.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Humor: Emotional Aspects, Role in Social
Book SynopsisExpression of humor begins at an early age in humans and it arises from both cognitive and social-emotional developmental origins. This book presents research on the emotional aspects, role in social interaction, and the health effects of humor. Chapter One begins with a discussion on social-emotional and cognitive aspects of humor, and suggests that the interactions among these developmental factors provide impetus for the expression and appreciation of humor, even during early childhood. Chapter Two supports the Theory of the Absurd and the Empowerment theory as a framework of unfolding the clowning behaviors of a kindergartener and provides a positive way of considering clowning during the early childhood years highlighting its importance to play and social empowerment. Chapter Three studies the impact of humor of closeness to neighbors. Chapter Four aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the fields of social cognition, identity, and humor within adolescence. Chapter Five explores some of the ways that humor may influence workplace health and well-being, while also addressing some of the problematic aspects of humor use. Chapter Six explores areas of healthcare where the deployment of humor or response to patient-initiated humor and/or laughter by a health profession would be considered inappropriate by their peers and/or their patient and/or the patients'' family and friends. Chapter Seven analyses instances of a specific kind of humor that has been identified as jocular mockery because of its frequent occurrence in intimate and close relationships among friends.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Psychology of Gratitude: New Research
Book SynopsisGratitude is a disposition or mood that enables people to respond positively for the benefits they receive from people, nature, or a moment of peaceful bliss. Past research has recognized gratitude as one of the most important virtues a person can have. It has been demonstrated that there are psychological, interpersonal, personality, and physical benefits to being grateful. Chapter One of this book provides an overview of what previous gratitude research has shown, what present research introduces to the literature, and what future research needs to enhance the theoretical understanding of gratitude development in youth. Chapter Two explores the correlations between filial acts and parenting practices. Chapter Three taps into the unique function of routine household chores as a vital means in developing gratitude in children, which plays a key role for an affective family bond between parents and their children. Chapter Four explores whether gratitude explains variance in loneliness after controlling for socio-demographic factors, the Big 5 factors, and life satisfaction. The final chapter reviews the role of both dispositional gratitude and envy on career adaptability in young adults.

Mandrake of Oxford Dreams: Exploring uncharted depths of
Book SynopsisMany people are interested in dreams but few have much of interest to say about them. This book is different and worth attention. It began as a simple question, any one of us might ask: Why do some people have success and money, while others spend their lives scraping spare change together for the most basic of things? Why do certain people always seem to make the right decisions & come out on top, even when they get some things wrong? (p8) The surprising answer lay in the world of dreams, their interpretation and of how some dreamers have made self-analysis such as useful personal resource. The author shares many personal experiences as well as those drawn from a general survey of peoples dream world. She explores the entire scene from Sigmund Freud up to more recent guides for the perplexed. She goes deep, revealing over 100 dream symbols, anything from new houses, through dream lovers to aliens. Not revealing the content of a dream to another, at least until you have interpreted and gained from it. This, just one secret she gleaned. Dreams are postcards, straight from your subconscious, telling you about you. One of her informants told a colleague, whom she had hitherto trusted, of a strange dream she had just had about a mutual colleague. then watched mortified as her otherwise trusted but obviously jealous colleague, strode boldly to the dream subject, and told them all the gory details. But the dream was not necessarily about anyone in particular, their appearance was most likely the personification of anxiety about an unfamiliar working environment. A secret unwanted admirer or personification of someones angst - better not say anything? The author is drawing upon the wisdom of sages and writers from times past. All of which shows how dreams reveal the blocks that are holding one''s life up. Along the way, she explores those uncharted depths of consciousness. And shows how successful people have always tuned into the subconscious, conversing with so-called dream counsellors who really did change their future.

Book SynopsisTrauma has become a hotly contested topic in literary studies. But interest in trauma is not new; its roots extend to the Romantic period, when novelists and the first psychiatrists influenced each others' investigations of the "wounded mind". This book looks back to these early attempts to understand trauma, reading a selection of Romantic novels in dialogue with Romantic and contemporary psychiatry. It then carries that dialogue forward to postmodern fiction, examining further how empirical approaches can deepen our theorizations of trauma. Within an interdisciplinary framework, this study reveals fresh insights into the poetics, politics, and ethics of trauma fiction.

Oxford University Press Emotional Truth
Book SynopsisThe word truth retains, in common use, traces of origins that link it to trust, troth, and truce, connoting ideas of fidelity, loyalty, and authenticity. The word has become, in contemporary philosophy, encased in a web of technicalities, but we know that a true image is a faithful portrait; a true friend a loyal one. In a novel or a poem, too, we have a feel for what is emotionally true, though we are not concerned with the actuality of events and characters depicted. To have emotions is to care about certain things: we can wonder whether those things are really worth caring about. We can wonder whether our passions reflect who we are, and whether they constitute fitting responses to the vicissitudes of life. So there are two aspects to emotional truth: how well an emotion reflects the threats and promises of the world, and how well it reflects our own individual nature. That is the starting point of this book, which looks first at the analogies and disanalogies between strict propositional truth and a looser, generic sense of truth. As applied to emotions, generic truth is closer to those original meanings: as in a portrait''s fidelity or friend''s loyalty. Taken in this sense, the notion of emotional truth opens up large vistas on areas of life essential to our existence as social beings, and to our concerns with beauty, morality, love, death, sex, knowledge, desire, coherence, and happiness. Each of those topics illustrates some facet of the dominant theme of the book: the crucial but often ambivalent role of our emotions in grounding and yet also sometimes undermining our values. Emotions act, in holistic perspective, as ultimate arbiters of values where different and independently justified standards of value compete.Trade ReviewWhether it is in the discussion of emotions in experiences of art, the way that emotions factor into explaining self-love and self-hate, or their role in relationships of love and friendship, [the author] eschew[s] simple metaphors and offer[s] detailed analysis complete with helpful diagrams and summaries that illustrate a sustained and intimate engagement with these complex and engaging topics. The essays, all written with Sousan flair and trademark themes, range widely over topics in emotion theory. * Robert C. Oxford University Press What Is This Thing Called Happiness
Book SynopsisAccording to an ancient and still popular view -- sometimes known as ''eudaimonism'' -- a person''s well-being, or quality of life, is ultimately determined by his or her level of happiness. According to this view, the happier a person is, the better off he is. The doctrine is controversial in part because the nature of happiness is controversial. In What Is This Thing Called Happiness? Fred Feldman presents a study of the nature and value of happiness. Part One contains critical discussions of the main philosophical and psychological theories of happiness. Feldman presents arguments designed to show that each of these theories is problematic. Part Two contains his presentation and defense of his own theory of happiness, which is a form of attitudinal hedonism. On this view, a person''s level of happiness may be identified with the extent to which he or she takes pleasure in things. Palgrave MacMillan UK Psychology in the Bathroom
Book SynopsisPresenting cutting-edge science in a playful manner, this exploration of a topic that has been veiled by taboo, the psychology of excretion, surveys an assortment of embarrassing processes, shameful disorders and disgusting habits taking the reader on a tour of the history and literature of elimination.Trade Review"Dr. Haslam should be congratulated for creating a unique compendium of information that is so entrenched in our human behavior but rarely thought about or discussed. Psychology in the Bathroom details a wide range of behaviors that are linked to excretory function. Topics such as the 'anal' personality, latrinalia (toilet graffiti, flatulence, scatologic swearing (potty mouth) and medical conditions like irritable bowel syndrome are well covered with regard to their history, psychology and gender and cultural differences in their societal expression. Some topics, like whether the toilet seat should be up or down is nicely discussed in a balanced attempt to solve a seemingly unsolvable domestic problem. I highly recommend this book to psychologists, health care professionals and anyone else interested in understanding such difficult to obtain areas of knowledge." - Douglas A Drossman, Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA and Past President of the American Psychosomatic Society. "Why is it that the psychological study of eating and sex enjoy so much attention from psychologists and the general public, while a no-less universal feature of human experience is ignored? Psychology in the Bathroom argues persuasively for the importance of this overlooked topic, then comprehensively rectifies its neglect. In doing so, this glorious, witty and unerringly pitch-perfect book offers an unusual and compelling window to the human psyche. With a scope far grander than its subject matter, this meticulously researched and wide-ranging study of excretion and related phenomena, both typical and pathological, integrates fascinating and often surprising insights from intersections with psychoanalytic theory, clinical research, the study of emotion, the intimacy of body and mind, language, gender and more. Beautifully written with unfailing clarity, sensitivity and humour, this important, captivating and charming exploration of the psychology of a universal phenomenon is a must-read for researchers, clinicians and general readers alike." - Cordelia Fine (author of Delusions of Gender), Associate Professor, Melbourne Business School, Australia "Imagine if 10% of human nature had been walled off from science by an irrational taboo. Wouldn't you want to peek in and see what was hiding back there? In this extraordinary book, Nick Haslam kicks down the bathroom door and follows the plumbing lines wherever they lead. It's great fun to read - a roller coaster ride through body, mind, and soul." - Jonathan Haidt, Professor of Psychology, University of Virginia, USA "Beautifully written with unfailing clarity and truly enviable humour, this important, captivating and charming exploration of the psychology of a universal phenomenon is a must-read for researchers and general readers alike." - The Psychologist "Toilet reading' of a high order." - Nature "James Bond conducts a sex life that leaves little to the imagination. But does the virile Mr Bond ever use the toilet? The answer is no. Not in literature, movies or television, with rare exceptions...It is high time that psychiatrists have a clear view on the issues involved with toileting, and a book by Professor Nick Haslam, a social psychologist at Melbourne University, is an excellent introduction."
