Book SynopsisThis book introduces the clinical concept of analytic contact. This is a term that describes the therapeutic method of investigation that makes up psychoanalytic treatment. The field has been in debate for decades regarding what constitutes psychoanalysis. This usually centers on theoretical ideals regarding analyzability, goals, or procedure and external criteria such as frequency or use of couch. Instead, the concept of analytic contact looks at what takes place with a patient in the clinical situation. Each chapter in this book follows a wide spectrum of cases and clinical situations where hard to reach patients are provided the best opportunity for health and healing through the establishment of analytic contact. This case material closely tracks each patient's phantasies, and transference mechanisms which work to either increase, oppose, embrace, or neutralize, analytic contact. In addition, the fundamental internal conflicts all patients struggle with between love, hate, and knowledge are represented by extensive case reports.Table of ContentsIntroduction -- Analytic Contact -- The self-imposed crisis in psychoanalysis: Analytic contact and the goal of psychological healing -- A return to healing -- The technical value of analytic contact -- Redefining psychoanalysis -- Knowledge, Repetition and Resolution -- Conflicts with knowledge -- Analytic contact and the creation of knowledge -- Fear of knowing and the desire for knowledge -- Transference ↔ Counter-Transference Struggles -- Projective identification and reactions to analytic contact -- Separation, idealization and enactments -- The evolution of projective identification -- Summary -- Conclusion

Book SynopsisBased on a two-year research project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), this book explores why many of those involved in racially motivated crime seem to be struggling to cope with economic, cultural and emotional losses in their own lives. Drawing on in-depth biographical interviews with perpetrators of racist crimes and focus group discussions with ordinary people living in the same communities, the book explores why it is that some people, and not others, feel inclined to attack immigrants and minority ethnic groups. The relationships between ordinary racism, racial harassment and the politics of the British National Party are also explored, as are the enduring impacts of deindustrialisation, economic failure and immigration on white working class communities. The book assesses the legacy of New Labour policy on community cohesion, hate crime and respect in terms of its impact on racist attitudes and racist incidents, and explores how it is that racist attacks, including racist murders, continue to happen. The book concludes by using psychoanalytically informed psychosocial concepts to explore examples of how and why race-thinking can be put aside and what it is that needs to happen to get perpetrators to loosen or shed their emotional investments in hatred and violence.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Race, racism, and racially motivated offenders -- Posing the "why?" question -- Recovering the contradictory racist subject -- Understanding the "racially motivated offender" -- Racially aggravated offenders and the punishment of hate -- The unconscious attractions of far right politics -- Rethinking community cohesion -- Zahid Mubarek's murderer: the case of Robert Stewart -- Racism, respect, and recognition -- Conclusion: losing the race

  • A Basic Theory of Neuropsychoanalysis

Taylor & Francis Ltd A Basic Theory of Neuropsychoanalysis

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book introduces a theoretical framework for studying the mind. Specifically, an attempt is made to frame ideas from psychoanalysis and cognitive-social psychology so that they can be taken readily into a realm of neurobiology. Psychoanalytic Theory still represents a very comprehensive theory of the human mind. It includes cognitive, emotional and behavioral variables, plus the idea of unconscious mental operations. The 'pleasure principle and 'repetition compulsion' were Freud's most general concepts of mental functioning. These concepts are renovated to get them "on the same page" with ideas from social cognition and neurobiology.Trade Review'Bernstein's book may be the most sophisticated text currently available for understanding the nature of psychopathology and its treatment through psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, integrating data from neurobiology, psychoanalysis, and developmental psychology. Practitioners of psychoanalysis, cognitive therapy, EMDR - and indeed, psychotherapists of all persuasions - will find much that is transformational in these pages. Bernstein manages to show with greater precision and clarity than has ever been possible before, how the fundamental self-related concepts, formed in early childhood, impact on neurobiology, mood, thought, and behaviour. All of this remains rooted in core principles observed by Freud. I read this with mounting excitement.'- Phil Mollon, PhD, Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst, Member of the British Psychoanalytical Society'W. M. Bernstein is one of the smartest and most divergent thinkers in psychology. In this thoughtful book, Bernstein weaves an intricate argument linking the basic tenets of psychoanalysis, cognitive and social psychology, and neurobiology. The result is a novel model of how the mind works, much of which hinges on the fundamental concepts of the pleasure principle and repetition compulsion. For the serious scholar interested in Freud's impact on modern social and biological processes, this book will be monumentally important. For the more general reader, it will be a valuable introduction to some of the most interesting developments in current psychology.'- James W. Pennebaker, University of Texas at Austin'Like large bureaucratic organizations, scientific disciplines operate in silos. Integration happens in organizations, if at all, at the top by the CEO. With this book, Bernstein has served as CEO of fundamental yet nonintegrated scientific fields that are critical to the human healing process. By wrapping his mind-brain around an enormous amount of disparate knowledge, he has created a new, useful theory that will influence relevant application of neuroscience, psychology, and psychoanalysis for years to come.'- W. • The Enigma of the Suicide Bomber: A

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Enigma of the Suicide Bomber: A

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy does someone resolve to take his own life in order to murder other people? What is the state of mind which allows him to commit such a monstrous act? This book explores the mental state that compels certain individuals to perform murderous, suicidal acts and emphasizes that, whereas a suicidal terrorist attack can be described as a crime against humanity, its protagonists cannot necessarily be classified as criminal or insane. There is no such a thing as a "typical" suicide terrorist - each attacker differs in age, sex, family status, culture, and even religion. Indeed, the common elements in suicide terrorism should perhaps be sought not so much in the individuals concerned as in the dynamics rooted in their group, family history or country. It may be extreme situations experienced by the group situations that are either objectively extreme or perceived as such that give rise to paradoxical behaviour at individual level. Psychoanalysis is well placed to consider this terrain. Freud, after all, soon disabused his reader of the belief that the less palatable aspects of psychic life were the exclusive preserve of some aberrant sub-category of people.Trade Review'While De Masi is a committed psychoanalyst, his work is not that of the one-track missionary. His approach, on the contrary, is a humane antidote to zealotry. In keeping with this spirit, he is mindful of the risk that psychoanalysis may claim too much and too fervently, not least in applying itself to politics. I commend this perturbing, challenging, and highly contemporary book: it is a far cry from the twenty-four-hour cycle of rolling news sound bites, a culture to which we become too easily inured.'- Daniel Pick, fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and professor of history at Birkbeck College, University of London; from the Preface'Can psychoanalysts concern themselves with momentous social and political phenomena such as terrorism? What instruments do analysts have at their disposal to respond to the myriad questions which they pose? In this book, Franco De Masi implicitly sets himself this challenge and bravely confronts it, offering us a forceful, eloquent, and at the same time fascinating account. He presents us with an initial exploration of a difficult terrain whose features are both unknown and contradictory; there is never a moment of tedium, and the narrative unfolds like a novel or thriller that is impossible to put down, as we anticipate the final outcome page after page.'- Anna Maria Nicolo, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst; from the ForewordTable of ContentsForeword , Preface , Introduction , A strategic aim , Psychoanalytic contributions , Origins and profile , Martyrdom and the sadomasochistic link , Murder–suicide , The network and filicide , The female suicide bomber , Trauma , Dehumanization , Dissociating emotions , Unique identity and omnipotence , A cannibal God , Terrorism: reversible or irreversible? , Conclusions

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn a series of papers, the author addresses the needs of students, patients, and practitioners of psychodynamic therapies. The work of these professionals with children and with adults is discussed from a pragmatic point of view, stressing the importance of recognizing the needs and capacities of each individual patient. At the same time, the author focuses on the professional's role in the clinical interaction, emphasizing the need to identify and respect what leads him to the consulting room, and what he expects to obtain from this strenuous and demanding type of work. The evolution of psychodynamic theories has led to its being often defined as a new version of the patient's earliest relationship of dependence on a maternal figure. The author discusses the implications of such a formulation and argues that, however correct it may be when referring to a small number of patients, it is important that, for the majority of cases, the professional should aim to help the patient to find and develop his or her independence and self-sufficiency.Trade Review'For more than half a century, Dr A. H. Brafman has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of children and their families. Though modest and tolerant in his thinking - like all good intellectuals - Brafman could never be described as bland. He holds many strong opinions, some highly challenging to orthodoxy; and he shares his theories generously. His collection of papers represents the very best of the independent tradition in contemporary psychological work; and no student can claim to have completed his or her education without having engaged seriously with Dr A. • Comprehensive Dictionary of Psychoanalysis

Taylor & Francis Ltd Comprehensive Dictionary of Psychoanalysis

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides easy to read, concise, and clinically useful explanations of over 1800 terms and concepts from the field of psychoanalysis. A history of each term is included in its definition and so is the name of its originator. The attempt is made to demonstrate how the meanings of the term under consideration might have changed, with new connotations accruing with the passage of time and with growth of knowledge. Where indicated and possible, the glossary includes diverse perspectives on a given idea and highlights how different analysts have used the same term for different purposes and with different theoretical aims in mind.Trade ReviewRanging from 'abreaction' and 'abstinence' , 'basic rule' and 'beta elements', and 'clarification' and 'conflict' through ' metapsychology' and 'malignant narcissism' to ' xenophobia' and 'zoophilia' , the terms and ideas covered in the book make for a panoramic view of the psychoanalytic universe. The collection is wide-ranging, eclectic, and fundamentally generous: it includes old, new, controversial, odd-sounding, familiar, unfamiliar, all sorts of terms and phrases from the one hundredyears history of psychoanalysis. While generally crisp and pithy, a definition here and there also includes an enderaing anecdote, a wry remark regarding the hidden ironies in the concept at hand, and a deliciously surprising linkage with another idea in the book. The book differs from the psychoanalytic glossaries published so far in five important ways: First and foremost, with the exception of Charles Rycroft's 1976 book , all these glossaries are edited volumes. Second, none of the previous glossaries are as inclusive of analytic ideas from diverse 'schools' and from an internationally representative group of analytic theorists and innovators. Third, there is a steadfastly clinical undertone to this book, something that the other books in this genre lack. Fourth, the list of terms included is much more comprehensive and up-to-date. Finally, the deft admixture of scholarly attitude with an occasional playfulness, even impishness, marks this book as a truly unique contribution."Wearing his erudition with the lightness of a Renaissance humanist and spanning the psychoanalytic universe from 'Abreaction' to 'Zone of proximal development'in beutifully crafted essays, Salman Akhtar proves himself to the lineal descendant of Erasmus and Montaigne. We shall not look uon his like again".-JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHOANALYTIC ASSOCIATION"AKHTAR HAS ASSEMBLED A WONDERFUL ARRAY OF TERMS, MANY OF THEM QUITE EXOTIC, SUPPORTED BY AN EXTRAORDINARY BIBLIOGRAPHY.wE ARE VERY GRATEFUL TO HIM FOR THE MASSIVE AMOUNT OF WORK HE HAS DONE, AND---LET'S JUST ADMIT IT--WE HAVE BORROWED FROM HIS BOOK DOZENS AND DOZENS OF TIME"-Elsee Samburg & Elizabeth AuchinclossEditors of the Forthcoming Psychoanalytic Glossary of the American Psychoanalytic Association.'...destined to become a classic reference book for psychoanalysis and an indispensable part of the library of psychoanalysts, academics and anyone seriously interested in psychoanalysis. This encyclopaedic and accessible work takes a significant step forward in the crucial task of building a common vocabulary for the relatively young discipline of psychoanalysis. Akhtar defines each of the over 1800 concepts, sub-concepts and colloquial words, describes its history from the origin of each term to its current usage, identifies the outstanding issues, cites the relevant literature associated with each entry, synthesizes the views of differing psychoanalytic orientations, and comments on its clinical usefulness. He also includes concepts from "applied" psychoanalysis such as the Holocaust studies, immigration literature, psychoanalytically informed political writing, and culture-specific psychoanalytic ideas from non-Western societies. In addition, Akhtar reviews twenty-six psychoanalytic glossaries, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, and the concordance of the Standard Edition. This is a monumental achievement, a resource to enhance communication worldwide, which sets the standard by which all future dictionaries of psychoanalysis will be judged.'- Donald Campbell (UK)'Salman Akhtar's magisterial compendium of terms and concepts is an extremely useful addition to the world-wide library of psychoanalysis. It offers an extensive view of the field and opens windows to wide-ranging conceptual landscapes. As a result, it will be of great appeal to the academic and the clinician alike.'- Leopold Nosek (Brazil)'...a highly impressive, clear, and objective review of psychoanalytic concepts, controversies, and new developments. The richness of entries, covering authors from the broadest spectrum of psychoanalytic theories, facilitates the reader's orientation through the complex world of well-accepted terminology, as well as through the historically relevant and even idiosyncratic formulations that are scattered throughout the psychoanalytic literature. Akhtar's stance is fair in comparing the use of the same terms by different authors and in summarizing the controversies in a particular realm. His book is easy and enjoyable to read and an occasional subtle, but always respectful, ironic comment conveys the author's view regarding a particular point in an honest yet unintrusive way. The inclusion of an appendix on the previously published glossaries and of an extensive and up-to-date bibliography gives this dictionary a truly scholarly dimension.'- Otto Kernberg (USA)'This well-researched and extremely informative dictionary is not only a dictionary; it is a historical account of our field, a treasure trove of useful references, and a handbook of technical guidelines. Consulting it yields instant knowledge; reading it gives pleasure. It should be in the possession of every psychoanalyst and psychotherapist.'- Henk-Jan Dalewijk (Holland)'In the specific case of dictionaries, the scarce relevance of typology is well known. Specialists point out that the inevitably imprecise limitations in the definition of types render all typologies unsatisfactory. This is not so in the case of the Comprehensive Dictionary of Psychoanalysis by Salman Akhtar. Here, the word 'comprehensive' indicates what distinguishes this work from other, apparently similar, efforts. Besides noting the originality, clarity, and authority of the entries, the reader will find that the themes confronted by the author cover an unusual range of conceptual extension and topical relevance. From a methodological viewpoint, Akhtar creates a new model that deserves the specialist's full attention. He is an author who is well known for the variety of his interests and this, surely, has been the source of inspiration for this important contribution.'- Jorge Canestri (Italy)'The work is of high quality, and will be interesting and useful to those studying or researching in the field of psychoanalysis.'- T.L. Book SynopsisIn his latest groundbreaking book, Peter L. Rudnytsky examines the history of psychoanalysis from a resolutely independent perspective. At once spellbinding case histories and meticulously crafted gems of scholarship, Rudnytsky's essays are "re-visions" in that each sheds fresh light on its subject but they are also avowedly "revisionist" in their scepticism towards all forms of psychoanalytic orthodoxy. Beginning with a judicious reappraisal of Freud and ranging in scope from King Lear to contemporary neuroscience, Rudnytsky treats in depth the lives and work of Ferenczi, Jung, Stekel, Winnicott, Coltart, and Little, each of whom sought to "rescue psychoanalysis" by summoning it to live up to its highest ideals.Trade ReviewWhy has psychoanalysis, beginning with Freud, so often betrayed its own ideals? Who has represented the best in psychoanalysis by refusing to place undue deference to authority - or loyalty to a movement - above the search for truth and concern for the welfare of patients? What are the connections between an analyst's life and work? How can a reconciliation of its claims to be both an art and a science help to ensure the future of psychoanalysis? These are the questions that inspire Gradiva Award winner Peter L. Rudnytsky's latest groundbreaking book. At once spellbinding case histories and meticulously crafted gems of scholarship, Rudnytsky's essays are re-visions in that each sheds fresh light on its subject, but they are also avowedly revisionist in their skepticism toward all forms of psychoanalytic orthodoxy. Book SynopsisTelling Stories? explores the contemporary state of affairs in the understanding and treatment of psychosis. An inclusive approach to mental distress requires that in order to truly understand psychosis we must begin by listening to those who know this from the inside out; the voices and narrative of those who have been condemned as "unanalysable" and mad. Far from being fantastical, the complex stories that are being articulated communicate painful truths and the myriad ways in which the human psyche survives overwhelming trauma. This book is the culmination of an integrated and creative alliance between those on the cutting edge, experientially, in research, diagnosis, and treatment; this multidisciplinary dialogue proposes a new relational and attachment orientated paradigm for the 21st century. In contrast to the containment model that is currently favoured, this advocates listening and talking therapies, and the healing power of a loving relationship, offering those with psychosis the possibility of more nourishing engagement with the world.Table of ContentsCHAPTER ONE Telling stories? 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book investigates what was distinctive about the predisposition to psychosis Freud posited in Daniel Paul Schreber, a presiding judge in Saxony's highest court. It argues that Freud's 1911 Schreber text reversed the order of priority in late nineteenth-century conceptions of the disposing causes of psychosis - the objective-biological and subjective-biographical - to privilege subjective disposition to psychosis, but without returning to the paradigms of early nineteenth-century Romantic psychiatry and without obviating the legitimate claims of biological psychiatry in relation to hereditary disposition. While Schreber is the book's reference point, this is not a general treatment of Schreber, or of Freud's reading of the Schreber case. It focuses rather on what was new in Freud's thinking on the disposition to psychosis, what he learned from his psychiatrist contemporaries and what he did not, and whether or not psychoanalysts have fully received his aetiology.Trade Review'Thomas Dalzell studies with precision the position of the best of classical psychiatry, as well as that of Freud and finally of Lacan. At the same time he does homage to a remarkable opus which was the object of these labours, that of a madman who, in his delirium and suffering, had enough humanism to leave to the savants a unique document made for their enlightenment.'- Dr Charles Melman, psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, director of teaching in Lacan's Ecole freudienne de Paris, and founder of L'Association Lacanienne Internationale, from the Preface'This work is novel, original, and exciting. Some of the short chapters include:How to choose a personal psychoanalystHow to do an initial interviewHow to listen to a patientHow to recognize and understand self-states, multiple identities, true and false selves, etc.How to tell what the transference isHow to deal with the sadomasochistic transferenceHow to understand the need for recognitionHow to think about analytic processHow to practice holistic healingHow to refer a patient for medicationHow to get paid for your workHow to manage vacations, weekends, illnesses, no-shows and other disturbances of continuityWhile trying to give simple answers to sometimes very difficult questions, it is written at a level of sophistication that may make it of interest even to experienced practitioners.Trade Review'This book is a little gem; words of practical wisdom by a master clinician. Sheldon Bach has long been regarded as an analyst's analyst, a voice of experience that transcends categorization into singular schools of thought. Here is his advice for the beginner, the fundamentals of clinical practice, of holistic healing, and of the therapist's own self-care.'- Lewis Aron, PhD, Director, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis'Dr Bach's book is perhaps the quintessential volume on how to proceed as a psychoanalytic therapist. It is, however, much more than that; it is a book that contains the wisdom of a master clinician delivered in a manner that is readily accessible at many different levels. On a first reading, one might think that, yes, this is very helpful and I am glad to have received this guidance. On a second reading, one begins to realize that a view of psychoanalysis is subtlyinculcated in the text and that the depth and scope of the material stirs one to consider some of the basic concepts in our field in a new light. It is a book for the young clinician to help them begin to find their way, and a book for older clinicians to help them more fully understand the pathways that they have traversed.'- Steven J. Book SynopsisIn this important new collection of essays, Jonathan Sklar argues that the founding tension between Freud's commitment to interpretation and Ferenczi's extra parameter of 'being in the experience' has a central place/key role to play in contemporary psychoanalytic debate, and that this tension can best be understood by returning to the place of trauma in psychoanalysis. Taking this debate into the heart of the clinical setting, a set of extensive, penetrating and often disturbing case studies examine the evocation of the real as early trauma for many patients and its subsequent mental development - a case of schizophrenia, a man with a severe Tic (spasmodic Torticollis), and a neurotic with a somatic resistance to ending a long analysis.Trade ReviewWith an introduction by Christopher Bollas and contributions by Michael Parsons.'In this marvellous work, Jonathan Sklar achieves the rare feat of integrating a highly sophisticated and scholarly treatment of key concepts of clinical psychoanalytic theory, as argued by many contributors to the field including Freud, Ferenczi, and Sklar himself, with the most elegant clinical vignettes, demonstrating the arduous work of everyday clinical practice. Many of the theoretical arguments are based on the work of European (primarily British) thinkers, and analysts not as familiar with them will find a superb synthesis of their positions. It is hard to imagine, however, that every psychoanalyst - from the most seasoned to the beginner - would not benefit from the study of this book. Beautifully written and richly textured, I would advise savouring a few pages at a time, not only for the sheer pleasure of enjoying the material, but also in order to be able to assimilate the wealth of insights contained in each paragraph. This is a book to come back to over and over again.'- Edward Nersessian, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Weil-Cornell Medical College, Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst, The New York Psychoanalytic Institute'Landscapes of the Dark is a meditation on the meanings and practice of psychoanalysis which reaffirms free association and history in the clinical encounter and beyond. Jonathan Sklar's concern is trauma in the individual as it makes itself felt in psychotic moments or "enactments", in "flitting thoughts" or silence; manifestations of the transfer of thought from unconscious to unconscious in the consulting room, which shape and determine the patient's movement through daily life and which stem from the tension between real event and trauma in the mind of the analysand. The analyst listens, pays patient attention to several temporal dimensions at once, and his capacity to bear the powerful emotion which fills the room - like a symphony, a poem, or sometimes a dark, cold, landscape - are his contribution to the arduous work of analysis. Here are insights to cherish: who can forget the woman who left the scarlet handkerchief pinched between two doors; the child alone downstairs in the lounge while her mother continually "took to her bed"; or, indeed, the analyst enduring despair? Sklar reflects on real events that scar modern history. His work in the European Psychoanalytic Federation (which now includes the Middle East, parts of Africa and more) demonstrates the ways in which inner and outer worlds are indissoluably linked. Everyone interested in how the mind works should read Landscapes of the Dark; Sklar breathes new life into its tensions, faultlines, and sources of creativity.'- Sally Alexander, Emeritus Professor of Modern History, Goldsmiths, University of LondonTable of ContentsPrologue , Introduction , The rebirth of history and trauma in psychoanalysis , Formulation of interpretations in clinical practice , Hysteria and mourning—a psychosomatic case , Trauma, psychosis, and regression: the psychoanalytic treatment of a schizophrenic patient , Daydreams, dreams, and trauma , Psychosomatics and technique , Somatic resistance to termination: the contemporary use of “active” technique , The life cycle of the psychoanalyst: reflections on a seminar for newly qualified analysts 1 , Epilogue

Book SynopsisFace-to-face with differences in the analytical relationship analysts frequently confront the limitations of their theories. In this new book Mary Lynne Ellis and Noreen O'Connor move to the heart of 21st century intertwining of psychoanalytical and philosophical critical reflections. They highlight how philosophical perspectives on language, embodiment, time, history, and conscious/unconscious experiences can contribute to clinical interpretations of gender, sexuality, race, age, culture, and class. Vital to Questioning Identities: Philosophy in Psychoanalytic Practice is its emphasis on clinical material, and on attentiveness to the uniqueness of individuals' articulations of their desires and identities.Trade Review'This welcome book shows up some of the mistaken beliefs about identities and particularly sexual minorities held in the psychoanalytic profession... When engaging with the reality of racism in patients' lives is seen as delving into sociology and beyond the remit of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, there is cause for concern. Ellis and O'Connor's work is lively and well referenced. Unusually, the case examples are diverse, drawn from a variety of class and ethnic backgrounds... The authors have positioned themselves in such a way that they can think about people's lived experiences as clinicians and also rigorously use both philosophical and psychoanalytic work to examine the therapeutic process. Like Wild Desires and Mistaken Identities it will provoke a great deal of thought and discussion.' - Lennox K. Thomas, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, BAP, Nafsiyat, UK. 'This excellent book offers a revision of psychoanalytic theory. In a compassionate account of individual human experience Ellis and O'Connor locate their inspiring insights within the context of 20th century philosophy. They propose appreciation of individual identities within culture. Gender, sexuality, sexual orientation, as well as attitudes to race, are perceived as potentially fluid. The discourse challenges fixed notions and is animated with lively clinical examples. This is an innovative contribution and will appeal to a wide range of readers including clinicians and theorists, students and experienced practitioners; indeed all who are interested in psychoanalysis.' - Professor Joy Schaverien, Ph.D., Jungian Psychoanalyst in private practice. Author of Desire and the Female Therapist and The Dying Patient in Psychotherapy'In this original book Ellis and O'Connor argue for the critical importance of an encounter between psychoanalytic and contemporary European philosophical texts such as those of Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, and Foucault, as well as of race and cultural theory. Their sensitive and engaging case illustrations show how this encounter can help us to generate more nuanced interpretations of an individual's sense of identity and difference in the analytical relationship. They offer a dynamic portrait of the socio-historical specificity of a person's lived embodiment in the co-created space of the analytic dyad. I believe this work will be an important contribution to the growing integration of psychoanalysis with the socio-cultural field.' - Jessica Benjamin, Psychoanalyst, Professor, NYU Postdoctoral Psychology Program. Author of Shadow of the Other: Intersubjectivity and Gender in Psychoanalysis'This is an intellectually brilliant work for it powerfully questions the psychoanalytic tradition that held philosophical thinking suspect... Ellis and O'Connor emphasize attentiveness to the singularity of psychic suffering, but also take it as the suffering of an embodied being in the world... This new practice challenges the deep-seated belief that "we need to know who we really are in order to be able to live". I hope that it can be translated into all the languages of the world... The task of relating a singular suffering to a context in the world is a great task, one in which psychoanalysis and philosophy must always accompany each other.' - Zeynep Direk, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy, Galatasaray University, Istanbul. Author of Levinas and Kierkegaard: Ethics and Politics (in Kierkegaard and Levinas: Ethics, Politics and Religion, edited by Wood and Simmons). 'This book is an ethically challenging and philosophically adventurous work... Ellis and O'Connor explore how philosophical questions of time, embodiment, experience and otherness can be posed in and through psychoanalytic practice. This book is a delightful read.'- Sara Ahmed, Professor of Race and Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths College and author of Queer Phenomenology: Orientations, Objects and Others and The Promise of Happiness'This revolutionary book represents an absolutely vital intervention. It works productively, creatively, and provocatively in the spaces between philosophy and psychoanalysis... Interdisciplinary in the best way it allows philosophy to confront psychoanalysis, and it uses psychoanalysis in new, inventive ways as a result of that encounter.'- Tina Chanter, Professor of Philosophy, DePaul University, Chicago. Book SynopsisThe author believes the discovery of psychoanalysis cannot be separated from Freud's self-analysis and the foundational act of writing about his own dreams. Now that the hype, the 100 years of excitement and building up of the institution of psychoanalysis, is in decline, the time seems ripe for a return to the question of the truth of the discovery of the unconscious. This book seeks to take up this crisis and return psychoanalysis to a discourse relevant to contemporary thought as a more personal story of what it means to become a psychoanalyst. The work is divided into three sections, each organized around a major thinker whose work is defined by a definitive engagement with psychoanalysis: Adorno, Lacan and Badiou. Each section is marked by a careful reading of these thinkers, attempting to deconstruct their understanding of psychoanalysis, including how this work has shaped the author's identity as a psychoanalyst.Trade Review'Jamieson Webster's reflections on psychoanalysis have a crystal clarity. As a writer, she introduces us time and again to the moment that inaugurates desire, including the desire for psychoanalysis. Her paragraphs move in a set of careful sequences that call into question their own possibility, registering at every juncture the seriality and detours of desire itself, a desire registered in psychoanalytic theory and practice, but also, clearly, in the practice of reading itself. Although she deftly and economically recapitulates the major philosophical questions implied by psychoanalytic practice, she also shows us why and how they dawn on us, what captures our attention, and what remains enigmatic. In this way, we are solicited to read with her, to follow a set of paths with no one outcome, and so to move away from dogmatic conceptions of psychoanalysis to an embodied and relational encounter with texts and the persistent and opaque desires they register. With great conceptual lucidity and argumentative edge, Webster brings us close to that passionate knowledge that is psychoanalysis and that defies every systematization.'- Judith Butler, author of Giving an Account of Oneself and Undoing Gender'This unique book shows us how psychoanalytic writing can be reinvented. Neither traditional academic discourse nor clinical case, it pursues the question of desire through a perpetual process of unbalancing the boundary we might expect between form and content. Thought-provoking, unnerving, and spunky, it will interest anyone working in the field of psychoanalysis.'- Darian Leader, author of The New Black: Mourning, Melancholia and DepressionTable of ContentsPreface -- Fatigue and haste -- Adorno -- Angels of disenchantment -- Lacan -- Instructions on how to fell a tree -- Badiou -- Last remarks

Book SynopsisThe chapters in this volume cover a wide range of topics that concentrate around four themes: transitional change in therapeutic communities; in working conferences for professional development or training; in organisation consulting with an emphasis on organisational learning; and in self studies of working systems in action. In all these psychic activities, "time and space" were created to allow for transitional processes to become alive. A therapist, a manager, a consultant or a layman may create conditions that facilitate or hinder human beings to become engaged in these normal, healthy processes, but the persons concerned undertake the basic psychic work.'It is encouraging to notice that more and more clinical institutions, organisations and even professional associations are becoming aware of the important and complex interactions between psychic processes and organisational realities. The engagement in transitional processes, however, demands courage. Courage that is proper to any pursuit of truth and social justice. At times, this search generates excitement, at other times we become scared by the realities we discover. Sometimes we need to cast aside certain realities to imagine and invent new things and subsequently face them again to make effective use of whatever we created. Book SynopsisThe field of child and adolescent psychotherapy is still relatively young and its short history has resulted in a paucity of mental health services for this neglected group. There is a distinct lack of research, evidence and treatment facilities, and yet in order to produce mentally healthy, undamaged adults of the future, this must surely be one area to concentrate resources on.The Cassel Hospital, and this book in particular, seek to redress the balance, and consequently, the chapters in this book follow a diverse path, on subjects ranging from Munchhausen Syndrome by proxy, to abuse within the home, relations within families and borderline adolescents. Various clinical cases are described in this much-needed volume that invites the reader to experience and learn from the life in a hospital that is often seen as the "last resort" of treament for many children and adolescents. The Internal and External Worlds of Children and Adolescents provides a thoughtful perspective on mental health services for one of the most neglected groups in society - our children and adolescents.Trade Review'The Cassel Hospital offers a very different kind of treatment from that provided by "traditional" psychiatry. Book SynopsisInside Lives belongs to the heart of the thinking and working of the Tavistock Clinic. Its aim is to bring psychoanalytic theory to life, to make it accessible to a much wider range of readers, both lay and professional, than would normally be familiar with this kind of approach. In the simplest of terms it tells the most complex of stories: the story of the internal development of a person from infancy to old age. In so doing, it reflects and encompasses the generational structure of the clinic as a whole, tracing the interacting influences - between infant, child, adolescent and adult - on the nature and quality of emotional growth and development. This book provides a perspective on the relationship between psychoanalytic theory and the nature of human development, which is not currently available in written form. Following the major developmental phases from infancy to old age, the author lucidly explores those vital aspects of experience, which promote mental and emotional growth and those which impede it. In bringing together a wide range of clinical, non-clinical and literary examples it offers a detailed and accessible introduction to contemporary psychoanalytic thought and provides a personal and vivid approach to the elusive question of how the personality develops.Trade Review'A remarkable achievement.'- Edna O'Shaughnessy'...with wisdom and compassion . essential reading for any parent or caregiver.'- Sylvia Ann Hewlett'In straightforward, jargon-free language the author explores, describes and reflects on the vicissitudes of emotional life from within the womb to later adulthood and the final stages of life. writes with great humanity and wisdom, both in vignettes and the analysis of them, creating a work of lasting value.'- Journal of Social Work Practice'The difficulty I have found in reviewing is that it is hard to adequately convey the scope, the richness, depth and literary beauty of this book.'- Journal of Child PsychotherapyTable of ContentsSeries editors’ preface -- Foreword to the second edition -- Author’s note -- A historical note -- Introduction -- States of mind -- Beginnings -- Infancy: containment and reverie -- Infancy: defences against pain -- Early childhood: weaning and separation -- Latency -- Models of learning -- The family -- Puberty and early adolescence -- Mid-adolescence: a clinical example -- Late adolescence: fictional lives -- The adult world -- “The later years” -- The last years -- Appendix

A creative lifestyle implies learning to be the authors of our own lives and a creative approach to our inner lives and our social environment gives us coherence and authenticity. This book derives creative principles for counselling and psychotherapy from practical modern approaches in these fields, as well as from psychoanalysis, hermeneutics, and new concepts of creativity itself. The creative attitude central to this represents an integrative basis for the differential application of various counselling and treatment techniques. Creative counselling serves to assist in coping with distress and clearly defined conflicts, and encourages personal and professional development.Creative psychotherapy is an aspect of dynamic, analytic and integrative psychotherapy. In a highly imaginative development of these models of thought, the distinguished clinician Gianna Williams, one of the leading figures in the field, elucidates the psychodynamics of these processes in the context of impairment of dependent relationships and of eating disorders in both men and women. This is a timely and brilliant account of an area of psychopathology that is rapidly growing in significance. The author provides a subtle understanding of some of the obstacles, which stand in the way of patients seeking and receiving therapeutic helpInternal Landscapes and Foreign Bodies explores the problems which arise in forming and sustaining intimate relationships. This book is based on Gianna Williams' work over many years in the Tavistock Clinic, including work in the Eating Disorders Workshop of the Adolescent Department. It examines how dependency is defended against in a variety of ways, which involve refusing to take in good experiences, by keeping some relationships at bay and controlling others. Dreaming and Thinking brings together an unusually rich set of essays which illustrate a range of approaches to dream analysis in contemporary analytic practice. Book SynopsisThis book focuses on the understanding of the epistemological roots of attachment theory, conceptualised as psychoanalytic paradigm, which highlights the movement away from a 'one-person psychology' to a multi-person psychology'. In this context, attachment theory is viewed as a theory of processes, across generations and across the dynamic interaction between the individual and his 'worlds of others' (including parental figures, offspring, the sexual partner, the group and society). This position is congenial with contemporary philosophical and developmental ideas and recent advances in the neurosciences. It is also a contribution to British Independent Psychoanalytic thinking, the so-called 'relational schools of psychoanalysis' and group analysis. This book involves: A didactic formulation of the basic principles of attachment theory as a psychoanalytic paradigm. Critical discussions of controversial issues in psychoanalysis (such as theories of intersubjectivity, thinking and motivation, the role of the historical reconstruction in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and the relation between attachment and sexuality), viewed from an attachment perspective. An exploration of the clinical implications of these concepts. Book SynopsisThe purpose of the Whurr series in Psychoanalysis edited by Peter Fonagy and Mary Target of University College London, is to publish clinical and research based texts of academic excellence in the field. Each title makes a significant contribution and the series is open-ended. The readership is academic and graduate students in psychoanalysis, together with clinical practitioners, in Europe, North America and indeed worldwide. This book brings together a number of international writers who are concerned with understanding and treating psychoses. The orientation of the book is psychoanalytic, but it is also cognisant of the need for a multi-disciplinary approach to these disorders for which there remains no comprehensive cure. One of the greatest obstacles clinicians and patients face lies less in our ignorance than in failure by mental health services to integrate existing knowledge into workable treatment plans. Too often clinical disciplines (psychiatry, psychoanalysis, clinical psychology, neuropsychology, nursing etc.) work separately rather than together, employing languages that are mutually incomprehensible. As a result, patients are unlikely to have their different needs properly met. At the heart of the multi-disciplinary approach lies the therapeutic relationship between patient and psychoanalyst, psychodynamically-minded psychiatrist or psychotherapist. Detailed clinical cases are presented together with contemporary conceptualisations of psychotic states.Table of ContentsA Rationale for The Psychoanalytically Informed Psychotherapy of schizophrenia and Other Psychoses. Book SynopsisThe ways we know, think and believe about a whole variety of key areas - different forms of discourse, psychotherapy as well as religion - have much more in common than is usually perceived. Through a series of fascinating parallels running across different disciplines, Jacobs demonstrates the possible analysis of modes of thinking and belief - from intuitive pre-thinking, through authoritative-driven thinking and belief, and personal and polymathic knowledge, to unknowing, the last concept being one that is shared by Bion, Winnicott and major mystical tradition. Using this theoretical model the book provides a map to how clients and indeed therapists might think and believe, suggesting ways in which they may be supported as they shift through different modes, with all the anxiety that disillusionment brings.Table of ContentsPreface. • Attachment Theory and the Psychoanalytic Process

John Wiley & Sons Inc Attachment Theory and the Psychoanalytic Process

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAttachment theory, the brainchild of child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst John Bowlby, has begun to have a worldwide impact among clinicians within the last ten years. This interest marks a departure from the early fate of attachment theory. At first shunned by the psychoanalytic community, Bowlby's brilliant and groundbreaking effort to recast basic psychoanalytic concepts within system theories and a new, ethologically based model of the importance of affectional ties across the life span was taken up by a group of gifted developmental researchers. Empirical research not only tested and confirmed many basic propositions of attachment theory, but also extended Attachment theory in unexpected and creative ways. Bowlby was surprised and gratified by this turn of events, but also disappointed that his intended clinical audience has not taken the theory and run with it. This edited book is in part a testament to the fact that clinicians are beginning to do just that; they are taking Attachment theory and research creatively to examine clinical issues. In doing so, new vistas and hypothesis are being put forward showing that Attachment theory is alive and well. In this volume the editors gathered a distinguished group of clinician-scholars from around the world (Argentina, Italy, Mexico, UK, USA and Spain) to examine and extend Bowlby's legacy. The book should be of interest to clinicians regardless of their orientation. Attachment theory cuts across boundaries of clinical modalities-individual, group or family therapy-and orientations-psychoanalytic, cognitive or behavioural. The book should also be of interest to researchers who may find the heuristic value of clinical insights a valuable addition to the legacy of Attachment theory.Trade Review"A genuine opportunity to catch up with major developments…may offer a useful resource for some time to come." Book SynopsisPsychoanalytic psychotherapy faces multiple challenges in the new millennium. How can it organize, teach and offer therapy in ways that are relevant to the diverse complex and social and cultural groups of people who seek psychological help? How should it adapt to demands for accountability and evidence? How can it cope in a climate of competition and market share? Should it cleave to medicine or abandon it? Define itself as a science or an art or an ethical practice? This wide-ranging work takes up some of the pressing cultural, political, organizational and ethical issues for psychoanalytic psychotherapy, placing them firmly in a clinical context. The contributors examine a range of issues from the experiences of a particular group of people in therapy (children, immigrants, gay men, short-term clients), who may challenge psychoanalytic assumptions, to the difficulties psychoanalytic psychotherapy has in organizing itself creatively in a risk-averse culture, and to the openings and connections with other disciplines that may extend and enliven critical work. Book SynopsisIn this engaging introduction, Josh Cohen argues that Freud shows above all that any thought, word or action, however apparently trivial, can invite close reading. Indeed, it may be just this insight that provokes so much opposition to psychoanalysis. By reading short extracts from across Freud's work, addressing the neuroses, the unconscious, words, death and (of course) sex, How to Read Freud brings out the paradoxical core of psychoanalytic thinking: that our innermost truths only ever manifest themselves as distortions. Read attentively, our dreams, errors, jokes and symptoms - in short, our everyday lives - reveal us as masters of disguise, as unrecognizable to ourselves as to others.

Book SynopsisIn "The Fragile Self" Dr Mollon argues that psycho-analysis requires an adequate theory of self in order to address effectively those states of mind in which a disturbed sense of self is prominent. He discusses disorders of the self from a variety of points of view, drawing particular attention to the work of Kohut and describing its strengths and limitations. Mollon argues that a broader "taxonomy" of disturbances of self is required and goes on to develop his own thesis that the patients in psychotherapy or analysis are often unconsciously seeking a needed development-enhancing response from the therapist. The therapist' s task is to recognize what this need is and to articulate it to the patient. In this way, the hitherto lonely and unreached parts of the personality can be contacted amd integrated. In exploring these issues, many aspects of psycho-analytic process and technique are re-examined.Table of ContentsThe Self. Narcissism. The Narcissistic Effects. Narcissistic personality.
