Oxford University Press Conversations in Critical Psychiatry

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisConversations in Critical Psychiatry brings together an edited selection of interviews published in the Psychiatric Times from 2019 to 2022, updated with new and previously unpublished material. These interviews explore critical and philosophical perspectives in psychiatry by engaging with prominent commentators within and outside the profession who have made meaningful criticisms of the status quo. These conversations advance our understanding of psychopathology and offer a pluralistic vision of psychiatric practice. The series includes interviews with many leading scholars such as Allen Frances, Anne Harrington, Paul McHugh, Nassir Ghaemi, Dainius Puras, Joanna Moncrieff, Jonathan Shedler, Sanneke de Haan, Nev Jones and Kenneth Kendler, among others. The discussions cover a wide array of philosophical, clinical, and scientific topics and present a sweeping overview of psychiatrys relationship to critique. A detailed introductory essay ''Psychiatry and the Critical Landscape'' offers a synthesis of themes and makes the case for mainstream psychiatry to embrace the critical tradition, while urging critical psychiatry to engage with a philosophically informed view of psychiatric science. Given the accessible and rigorous nature of these conversations, this book will be of interest to academics, clinicians, students, service users, and general readers alike.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNow in its Fifth Edition, Neuropsychological Assessment reviews the major neurobehavioral disorders associated with brain dysfunction and injury. This is the 35th anniversary of the landmark first edition. As with previous editions, this edition provides a comprehensive coverage of the field of adult clinical neuropsychology in a single source. By virtue of the authors'' clinical and research specializations, this book provides a broad-based and in-depth coverage of current neuroscience research and clinical neuropsychology practice. While the new edition is updated to include new features and topics, it remains true to the highly-regarded previous editions. Methods for obtaining optimum data are given in the form of hypothesis-testing techniques, clinical tips, and clinical examples. In the seven years since the previous edition, many advancements have been made in techniques for examining brain function and in our knowledge about brain-behavior relationships. For example, a surge of functional imaging data has emerged and new structural imaging techniques have provided exquisite detail about brain structure. For the first time, this edition includes examples of these advancements, many in stunning color. This edition also includes new tools for clinicians such as a neuroimaging primer and a comparison table of the neuropsychological features of progressive dementias. The chapters on assessment procedures include discussion of issues related to test selection and reviews of recently published as well as older test batteries used in general neuropsychological assessment, plus newly developed batteries for specific issues.Trade ReviewOverall this volume is well organized and provides a definitive guide for neuropsychological assessment. A patient-oriented manual for complex trauma survivors.Trade Review"[A] book worthy of [therapists’] time." -- PsychCentral"This book is a much-welcomed tool for working with individuals with complex trauma. Although there are other training manuals that address the treatment of trauma, there is none that deal specifically with the subset of dissociative pathology. This manual is the first of its kind, a hands-on and practical training and skill-building tool for individuals and therapists. . . . The book has a user-friendly approach that is integrative and eclectic and can easily be introduced and incorporated in ongoing treatment. . . . For therapist and clients, navigating complex trauma can feel daunting and confusing with many stops and falls that may leave both feeling discouraged. This book is an anchor for the work, a place to return when uncertainty invades treatment." -- Social Work with Groups"Coping with Trauma-Related Dissociation contains the lucid explanations, practical skills, and collective wisdom of three therapists with decades of experience treating dissociative patients. This book serves as a manual for therapists, a guide for trainers, and a workbook for dissociative disorder patients, delivering an up-to-date blend of the best clinical practices with recent advances in mindfulness therapy and cognitive behavioral approaches to pathological dissociation." -- Frank W. Book SynopsisMentalization-based treatment (MBT) has gained international acclaim as an efficient treatment for patients with borderline personality disorder. The approach is also helpful for other personality disorders and conditions that are difficult to treat, e.g. addiction and eating disorders. MBT consists of a psychoeducational, an individual, and a group therapy component. This is the first comprehensive manual for mentalization-based group therapy. The author has developed the manual in close cooperation with Anthony Bateman and a team of group analysts. It covers all the aspects of MBT which are necessary to produce an informed and qualified group therapist. The book covers the theory behind mentalization and borderline personality disorder (especially its evolutionary roots), the structure of MBT and a discussion of previous experiences with group psychotherapy for borderline patients. The core of the book explains the main principles of MBT-G and provides a powerful means for ensuring that therapists adhere to these principles in a qualified way. The last part contains a full transcript from a real MBT group composed of borderline patients. 1 in stock

Book Synopsis An estimated two to three million people in the United States today were raised by a schizophrenic parent. Brown and Roberts offer a unique book based on interviews with over forty adult children of mothers diagnosed as schizophrenic. Such topics as the isolation their family felt, their chaotic home environments, their present relationships with their mothers, and the lost potential of mother and child are covered. Their stories are fascinating and provide important information to both the mental health community and the lay public. The offspring have been described as having higher rates of increased aggressivity and sibling conflict, but often their circumstances strengthened these children and contributed to artistic and creative talents, resiliency, and high achievements. The authors provide an overview of schizophrenia, behaviors of the affected parent, and the marital relationship of the patient and her non-schizophrenic spouse. As adults, the respondents now shar

Book SynopsisFor more than three decades, the Textbook of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences has been the gold standard for understanding the structural and functional foundations and rapidly evolving knowledge base of neuropsychiatric disorders. In the new edition, the esteemed editors have undertaken a complete reorganization, reconceptualizing the way the material is presented and integrating considerations of neuropsychiatric symptoms, syndromes, and treatments into chapters addressing the neuropsychiatry of neurodevelopmental disorders, acquired neurological conditions, neurodegenerative disorders, and primary psychiatric disorders. The result is a text that flows easily and logically from general principles to specific diagnostic tools and conditions, making it a clinically relevant and eminently practical guide for medical students and residents, psychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists and neuropsychologists, as well as a broad range of professionals who work in diverse clinical settings (e.g., the general hospital setting, physical medicine/rehabilitation hospitals, psychiatric institutes, community mental health centers, alcohol and chemical dependency programs, and outpatient services and doctors' offices). The book possesses a multitude of useful attributes and features: • The new edition is thoroughly compatible with the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.• The chapters are complete unto themselves, allowing for easy retrieval and use by clinicians facing daily challenges in the field. Extensive references allow for further research and study in quieter moments.• Chapters on specific disorders have consistent structures, where appropriate. For example, the chapter on "Autism Spectrum Disorders" has sections on background, prevalence, etiology, neurobiology, clinical presentation, assessment, differential diagnosis, comorbidity, research, interventions and treatment, and medication.• The prestigious roster of contributors boasts both luminaries and emerging leaders in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry, providing readers with diverse perspectives.• The material is supported by scores of tables, graphs, and illustrations, including PET, CT, and MRI images. Neuropsychiatry has come a long way from the days when patients with neuropsychiatric conditions routinely fell through the cracks of the healthcare system. The Textbook of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences provides comprehensive, current, and evidence-based coverage in a forward-looking volume to train a new generation of clinicians in this important work.Trade ReviewThe main focus of this book is on reviewing the various neuropsychiatric disorders, which it does quite well. One chapter that is particularly helpful is on neurobiological bases of cognition, emotion, and behavior, which provides an excellent model for understanding the neurobiology of neuropsychiatric symptomatology. • Shrinks: The Untold Story of Psychiatry

Orion Publishing Co Shrinks: The Untold Story of Psychiatry

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisA world-renowned psychiatrist reveals the fascinating story of psychiatry's origins, demise and redemption. Psychiatry has come a long way since the days of chaining 'lunatics' in cold cells and parading them as freakish marvels before a gaping public. But, as Jeffrey Lieberman reveals in his extraordinary and eye-opening book, the path to legitimacy for 'the black sheep of medicine' has been anything but smooth. In SHRINKS, Dr Lieberman traces the field from its birth as a mystic pseudo-science through its adolescence as a cult of 'shrinks' to its late blooming maturity since the Second World War as a science-driven profession that saves lives. With fascinating case studies and portraits of the luminaries of the field, from Sigmund Freud to Eric Kandel, SHRINKS is a gripping and illuminating read. It is also an urgent call-to-arms to dispel the stigma surrounding mental illness and to start treating it as a disease rather than a state of mind.Trade ReviewAs a retort to those that still believe there are no mental disorders, only diverse mentalities, Jeffrey Lieberman's historic and spirited defence of psychiatric diagnoses and treatments has much work to do ... This is a humane guide to psychiatry's internal conflicts and a candid account of its claims to scientific credibility -- Iain Finlayson * THE TIMES *Journeying through the history of psychiatry with Jeffrey A. Lieberman is not unlike being led by Voltaire's indomitable optimist, Professor Pangloss, through the seven years' war and the Lisbon earthquake ... [Lieberman is] a breezy, charming, and genial guide to a field fraught with difficulties ... [He is] an insider, with the kind of experience most professional historians cannot claim -- Lisa Appignanesi * THE OBSERVER *An informative book ... Given that the mind is a fragile faculty and the brain is a delicate organ, it is sobering to discover from his book what a haphazard discipline psychiatry was until the 1970s -- Jack Carrigan * CATHOLIC HERALD *SHRINKS is an excellent way into the world of modern psychiatry: its science, the limits and benefits of its diagnostic systems and treatments, how doctors make good decisions and why they make bad ones. SHRINKS is as thorough as it is lively -- Kay Redfield Jamison, author of AN UNQUIET MINDThe most authoritative exploration I have read of the state of contemporary psychiatry ... It is also the most hopeful. Jeffrey Lieberman's account of the scientific revolution in psychiatry - a revolution that he both participated in and helped to foster - is compelling. But it is his candour, lack of dogmatism, and sensitivity to suffering that will linger in your mind long after you've turned the last page -- Sylvia Nasar, author of A BEAUTIFUL MINDAn astonishing book: honest, sober, exciting, and humane. Lieberman writes with the authority of an expert, but with the humility of a doctor who has learned to treat the most profound and mysterious forms of mental illnesses ... This book brings you to the very forefront of one of the most amazing medical journeys of our time -- Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIESJeffrey Lieberman has produced a masterful behind-the-scenes examination of psychiatry and, by extension, the human condition. His epic narrative charts the unlikely ascent of "the stepchild of medicine" from the earliest parlor-room charlatans of animal magnetism to the contentious Digital Age roll-out of the DSM-5, paralleling Lieberman's own professional transformation from eager psychoanalytic student of Freud to neuroscience-minded president of a reformed American Psychiatric Association. A wise and gripping book that tackles one of the most important questions of our time: what is mental illness? -- Andrew Solomon, author of FAR FROM THE TREE and THE NOONDAY DEMONSHRINKS is an excellent way into the world of modern psychiatry: its science, the limits and benefits of its diagnostic systems and treatments, how doctors make good decisions and why they make bad ones. SHRINKS is as thorough as it is lively -- Kay Redfield Jamison, author of AN UNQUIET MINDThe most authoritative exploration I have read of the state of contemporary psychiatry ... But it is his candour, lack of dogmatism, and sensitivity to suffering that will linger in your mind long after you've turned the last page -- Sylvia Nasar, author of A BEAUTIFUL MINDAn authoritative, often inspiring account of progress in psychiatry, balanced by frank and admirable openness about the field's historical missteps -- Peter D. Kramer, author of LISTENING TO PROZAC and AGAINST DEPRESSIONSHRINKS is a must-read for anyone who cares about the future of mental health care ... I've been a policy-maker and a patient for decades, yet there was much in here I never really understood before. And now that we have mental health parity, that understanding is more important than ever. A smart, important, accessible book -- Patrick J. Kennedy, former US congressman, founder of The Kennedy Forum, and co-founder of One MindOnly someone such as Jeffrey Lieberman ... has both the clinical and scientific vision to write a modern history of the evolution of psychiatry, from its primitive origins to its current promise for the future. This highly readable and fully accessible book puts the history of psychiatry into a modern perspective for the general reader -- Eric Kandel, University and Kavli Professor of Brain Science, Columbia University, and Nobel Prize winner for Medicine and Physiology 2000SHRINKS is a great read and is highly recommended. By combining clinical case histories and theoretical musings, it describes where psychiatry came from and where it is going. The author, a highly respected clinical, research, and academic psychiatrist and recent President of the American Psychiatric Association, does not hesitate to describe the soft underbelly of his profession "as it matured from a psychoanalytic cult of shrinks into a scientific medicine of the brain." Especially interesting are descriptions of the profession's meanderings into intellectual dead ends, from Wilhelm Reich to Thomas Szasz and Daniel Amen. Equally intriguing is the emergence of today's scientific psychiatry which, when practiced skillfully, can afford great relief for many psychiatric disorders -- E. Fuller Torrey, author of SURVIVING SCHIZOPHRENIA

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn ADHD and the Edison Gene, Thom Hartmann shows that the creativity, impulsiveness, risk taking, distractibility, and novelty seeking that are characteristic of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are not signs of a disorder at all but instead are components of a highly adaptive skill set utilized by our hunting and gathering ancestors. These characteristics have been critical to the survival and development of our modern civilization and will be vital as humanity faces new challenges in the future. Hartmann, creator of the "hunter versus farmer" theory of ADHD, examines the differences in neurology between people with ADHD and those without, sharing recent discoveries that confirm the existence of an ADHD gene and the global catastrophe 40,000 years ago that triggered its development. He cites examples of significant innovators with ADHD traits, such as Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison, and argues that the children who possess the ADHD gene have neurology that is wired to give them brilliant success as artists, innovators, inventors, explorers, and entrepreneurs. Emphasizing the role that parents and teachers can play in harnessing the advantages of ADHD, he shares the story of how Edison was expelled from school for ADHD-related behavior and luckily his mother understood how to salvage his self-esteem and prepare him for a lifetime of success. Offering concrete strategies for nurturing, educating, and helping these children reach their full potential, Hartmann shows that rather than being "problems" such children are a vital gift to our society and the world.Trade Review“Like Edison, Thom Hartmann is a visionary who uses history to illuminate the potential cost to society of shackling unique minds aching to soar. He questions the cultural imperative that compels us to label what is outside the bell curve as pathological rather than extraordinary. In this new edition, Hartmann urges us to nurture the fearlessly innovative child and celebrate their differences. Our futures will ultimately be shaped by those undaunted by the spectra of the impossible--because they have been taught to believe in their own self-worth.” * Ellen Littman, Ph.D., coauthor of Understanding Girls with ADHD *“Instead of pathologizing the differences we call ADHD, we need to value neurodiversity, and Thom’s book shows us in rich detail how and why this is true. Thom’s work can help protect children and adults from the devastating effects of being viewed through a pervasive pathological lens--a much more severe problem than ADHD could ever be!” * Sari Solden, M.S., L.M.F.T., psychotherapist and author of Women with Attention Deficit Disorder and *“Thom Hartmann has made one of the most important contributions to transforming our understanding of ADHD. Thom was the first to consider ADHD in an evolutionary context. He showed that ADHD has not only a significant survival advantage in hunter gatherer societies, but that it also confers powerful advantages in our contemporary civilization. Thom was one of the very first to comment on the link between ADHD and creativity. He will be recognized as a pioneer contributing to the reconceptualization of ADHD from being simply a ‘disorder’ to being viewed as a ‘mode of thought’ characterized by strengths, such as enhanced creativity.” * Richard Silberstein Ph.D., professor emeritus, Swinburne University of Technology *"From the marvelous mind, and lively pen of Thom Hartmann comes this new opportunity to celebratethe magnificent diversity of how we learn to thrive Read it... and start a new conversation with your kids." * Rabbi Hillel Zeitlin, Director, The Maryland Institute for Ericksonian Hypnosis & Psychotherapy *“The very gene associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have helped humans survive sudden climate changes before the end of the ice age. Thom Hartmann explains that children and adults with ADHD have characteristics such as risk-taking, distractibility, creativity and impulsiveness that are ideal for life paths that could well save us in the future. They're ideally suited to becoming entrepreneurs, explorers, inventors, innovators, emergency room physicians and fighter pilots. Drugs are not the answer; nor is the structured education system which has no room for "problem" children. Hartmann has strategies to help parents and teachers bring out the best in so-called hyperactive kids.” * Nexus, February 2016 *“The very gene associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have helped humans survive sudden climate changes before the end of the ice age.…children and adults with ADHD have characteristics such as risk-taking, distractibility, creativity and impulsiveness that are ideal for life paths that could well save us in the future. I found this book insightful, informative and inspirational. The message I took away from this book was: ‘child-hood’ is not a psychological disorder--stop drugging our kids.” * New Dawn, Sandy Brightman, March 2016 *Table of ContentsForeword by Lucy Jo Palladino, Ph.D. Acknowledgments Introduction: A New View for Our Children Genetics and Differences 1993: The Hunter Gene Distractibility Impulsivity Risk-Taking Where Have All the Hunters Gone? • Why Torture Doesnt Work

Harvard University Press Why Torture Doesnt Work

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisBesides being cruel and inhumane, torture does not work the way torturers assume it does. As Shane O’Mara’s account of the neuroscience of suffering reveals, extreme stress creates profound problems for memory, mood, and thinking, and sufferers predictably produce information that is deeply unreliable, or even counterproductive and dangerous.Trade ReviewOffers a passionate and informative riposte to those who feel a ‘war on terror’ justifies barbarism. -- Hayden Murphy * The Guardian *Shane O’Mara’s book is a rebuttal to the torture memos that came out a few years ago that justified ‘enhanced interrogation’ methods used in Guantanamo Bay and Northern Ireland. He takes an empirical approach to torture. From a scientific point of view, even before getting into the morality, it is just ineffective. The FBI said the best technique is to get clever interrogators who are good at forming bonds. The analogy he uses is that if you had a computer that had information you wanted you wouldn’t hit it with a hammer because that would affect its recall. Humans work the same way. -- Neil Delamere * Irish Examiner *A powerful, convincing and thought-provoking volume. O’Mara presents us with the overwhelming scientific evidence that torture simply does not work. What is more, it damages memory and is highly likely to produce flawed intelligence. Claims of the utility of torture are no more than ‘cargo cult science.’…The significance of this book is difficult to overstate. Its conveyance of moral outrage as regards the practice of torture is unqualified and it delivers the evidence to repudiate all utilitarian justifications of the practice. It offers science-based pointers to manners of conducting interrogation that are both more effective and compliant with human rights standards. Furthermore, giventhe questions surrounding the utility of all statement-related evidence, it supports the long-standing calls for more focus on such other evidentiary sources as forensics and surveillance. It has a great deal to say to contemporary policy-makers and for police and intelligence services, not least at a moment of enhanced attention to counter-terrorism. The book demonstrates the importance of science in the pursuit of human rights…O’Mara deserves some sort of prize for this work. -- Michael O’Flaherty * Irish Times *Instead of simply providing utilitarian arguments, [O’Mara] argues that there is no evidence from psychology or neuroscience for many of the specious justifications of torture as an information-gathering tool. Providing an abundance of gruesome detail, O’Mara marshals vast, useful information about the effects of such practices on the brain and the body. -- Lasana T. Harris * Nature *Does torture actually work? To be sure, it can compel people to confess to crimes and to repudiate their religious and political beliefs. But there is a world of difference between compelling someone to speak and compelling them to tell the truth… Yet the assumption underlying the ticking time bomb defense is that abusive questioning reliably causes people to reveal truthful information that they would otherwise refuse to disclose. Few scholars have scrutinized this assumption—and none with the rigor, depth, and clarity of Shane O’Mara in his excellent book, Why Torture Doesn’t Work: The Neuroscience of Interrogation… Invoking the relevant science, he shows that torture undermines the very neurocognitive mechanisms requisite for recalling veridical information from memory. -- Richard McNally * Science *If the aim of the torturers is to extract information, they should read O’Mara’s book and adopt gentler methods. CIA and the rest of you, read and note. Neuroscience says your methods don’t work. -- Steven Rose * Times Higher Education *Why Torture Doesn’t Work is a valuable book. O’Mara builds his case like a prosecutor, citing scientific studies and relentlessly poking holes in absurdities and inconsistencies in documents such as the ‘Torture Memos.’ Whether science matters to those who defend torture is another matter, as O’Mara knows: their motivation is often punitive, not practical. But once torture is imposed, the consequences, he says, are that it will be ‘ineffective, pointless, morally appalling, and unpredictable in its outcomes.’ -- Carl Elliott * New Scientist *Takes a scientific look at how the brain operates—or doesn’t—under stress, and points to more humane ways of getting information. -- Claire O’Connell * Irish Times *O’Mara recognizes that there are no clear, consistently successfully approaches to getting reliable information from captives. He makes a compelling case, however, that our current naïve intuitions and macho methods, including conducting interrogations in English to show who is in charge, as well as torture, are counterproductive. And that the training and experience of interrogators currently employed by the CIA is woefully inadequate. -- Glenn C. Altschuler * Psychology Today *A catalog of the scientific evidence of how torture is at best ineffective, usually counterproductive, and always inhumane. In his exhaustive examination of the psychological literature on human (and animal) stress responses, O’Mara combs through numerous studies demonstrating how those stress responses are related to memory retrieval and communication, which are the stated goals of the U.S. military’s ‘enhanced interrogation techniques.’ The author’s main argument—that we could argue forever about the ethics of torture, but the point is moot if the techniques don't even work to solicit the information sought—is confirmed over and over as he works through experiments on the effects of sleep deprivation, pain, drowning, heating, cooling, sensory deprivation, and more. The experiments range from the well‐known obedience experiments of Stanley Milgram to lesser‐known studies that measured the cognitive effects of changes in core body temperature. O’Mara leaves no stone unturned as he meticulously details the procedures and outcomes of each experiment… Everything you never wanted to know—but probably should—about interrogation techniques and outcomes. * Kirkus Reviews *An authoritative analysis. -- Antoinette Brinkman * Library Journal *O’Mara has written a sober, convincing argument that torture is practically worthless and morally disgraceful. * Publishers Weekly *With accurate and compelling neuroscience, this book will be valuable to individuals outside the neuroscience world—in politics, in the military—who should know the scientific basis of torture as they make and execute policy in this area. -- Howard Eichenbaum, Boston UniversityOne of the most powerful arguments one can make against a practice is that it is self-defeating, given its own goals. This is a highly unusual book on torture—terrifically interesting. -- Henry Shue, Merton College, University of OxfordIn a meticulously researched book that reinforces the legal and ethical arguments against torture, Shane O’Mara focuses on its effects on human physiology…As O’Mara shows, torture techniques are mentally debilitating, affecting memory as well as mood, and thereby compromise the capacity of victims to form and deliver a reliable account of any information that they may be withholding. Not only is torture morally deplorable, therefore, but its outcome is also entirely unpredictable…O’Mara capably translates the experimental evidence into accessible language for the general reader. -- Giovanni Frazzetto * Financial Times *Fascinating…Why Torture Doesn’t Work is the empirical case against torture, a reading of scientific research which concludes that torture is a poor method of extracting information, and that the people who argued for it and used it had no idea what they were doing…The message of science, according to O’Mara, is unambiguous: torture makes it harder to obtain useful information, not easier…O’Mara deserves a lot of praise for writing a convincing and moral book. -- Greg Waldmann * Open Letters Monthly *The book takes readers on an extended tour of the brain and the way it functions under the ‘chronic, severe, and extreme stressor states’ produced by forms of torture such as starvation, thirst, sleep deprivation, and waterboarding. O’Mara looks at the scientific literature examining the effects of these grim methods and determines that information obtained using them is inherently suspect…The last refuge in the defense of torture has always been an appeal to elevate pragmatism and security over ethics and the law in the face of a ‘ticking time bomb.’ O’Mara’s book reveals the hollowness of that argument. -- G. John Ikenberry * Foreign Affairs *O’Mara marshals a large amount of scientific literature to make his point. -- Rupert Stone * Newsweek *O’Mara shows that the processes of enhanced interrogation do indeed create such stressful states—interestingly, both in the interrogated person and in the interrogator—that it is enormously destructive not only to the person but to the information; and not only immediately but in the longer term… [The book’s] greatest strength, to me, is the rigor of its evident deductivism and the way this is demonstrated, which seems to act almost as a catechism against those who, with Vice President Dick Cheney, would embrace ‘the dark side’ rather blithely… [It] provide[s] key documents testifying to the assumptions of our time about what constitutes a human being. -- Rebecca Lemov * Times Literary Supplement *

Book SynopsisThe psychiatric profession in Germany changed radically from the mid-nineteenth century to the beginning of World War I. In a book that demonstrates his extensive archival knowledge and an impressive command of the primary literature, Eric J. Engstrom...Trade ReviewEngstrom... reveals how the various dimensions of academic psychiatry—its cognitive content, its treatment and research practices, its curriculum, its tools, its workspaces (clinics, laboratories, lecture halls), and its institutional (medical departments, universities, mental health care in general) and political and social contexts—were all closely interrelated.... Engstrom's interpretations are... nicely detailed. -- Harry Oosterhuis, University of Maastricht * Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences *Engstrom... has produced a fascinating history of the professionalizing of psychiatric practice in modern Germany in this extensively researched book. * Choice *Here we get a detailed look at the beginnings of the professionalization of psychiatry in Germany in the nineteenth century, a concomitant of the medicalization of madness that took place at the same time. -- Michale Beldoch * Cornell Studies in the History of Psychiatry, 2003-2004 *The nineteenth century can rightly be called the century of medicine and biology. With the support of national and provincial governments, clinical medicine and the human sciences flourished in Germany. By century's end, scholars in fields such as pathology, neurology, epidemiology, and experimental psychology could lay claim to being the best in the world. In no other field was the influence of German medicine and science more palpable than in psychiatry.... Eric Engstrom's book is the first to explore this important moment in the intellectual and social history of Germany. With Engstrom, this rather daunting venture is in able hands. To those scholars working in the field of the history of German psychiatry, Engstrom is well-known as a thoughtful and insightful historian, particularly well-informed about the scope of archival materials available to scholars. -- Greg Eghigian, Penn State University * H-Soz-u-Kult *The primary focus of Eric J. Engstrom's book on psychiatry in Germany from roughly the mid nineteenth century to the First World War is the tension between alienists—clinicians whom Engstrom defines as 'an ambiguous blend of physician, judge, father and teacher,' resident with their 'family' of staff and patients in large isolated rural asylums—and the new breed of 'scientific' psychiatrists based in urban clinics affiliated to university medical schools. This tension—never entirely resolved—led to a fundamental shift in asylum culture.... Engstrom must be given credit for achieving what he set out to do. He is a very thorough, undogmatic historian and the book is formidably footnoted and referenced. The prose is serviceable and straightforward, and, while it features much jargon from the social sciences, is never deformed by it. * Times Literary Supplement *

Book SynopsisPsychiatry is dedicated to understanding mental disorders and helping people struggling with them live fulfilling lives. Although current treatment modalities can be remarkably effective at improving patients' quality of life and mitigating the burden of symptoms for disorders like depression, bipolar disorder, or posttraumatic stress disorder, finding the right treatment for an individual can be a long and fraught process during which symptoms can worsen the risks associated with other health conditions. Precision psychiatry, as outlined in this groundbreaking book, presents a new path forward. By integrating findings from basic and clinical neuroscience, clinical practice, and population-level data, the field seeks to develop therapeutic approaches tailored for specific individuals with a specific constellation of health issues, characteristics, strengths, and symptoms. This guide harnesses the expertise of more than three dozen contributors in diverse areas of interest, including neuroimaging, electrophysiology, neurocognition, behavioral science, machine learning, and pharmacotherapy, to examine the current state of precision medicine in psychiatry and explore future areas of advancement. Numerous case examples illustrate and apply the principles of precision psychiatry to mood and anxiety disorders, as well as schizophrenia, in adult patients, emphasizing the push to develop biomarkers and algorithms that will identify subtypes of patients that may be underserved by conventional therapies. In these pages, educators, trainees, and clinicians will find the latest research in precise classification, treatment planning, and early identification across a spectrum of psychiatric disorders—and the foundation for a future where one-size-fits-all treatments are replaced by modalities optimized for individual patients across all stages of a disorder.Table of ContentsForewordPrefaceIntroductionPart 1: Neuroimaging of CircuitsChapter 1. Book SynopsisRe-released with a new introduction, and to coincide with a film of the same title (directed by the author), Mad To Be Normal is the memoir R. D. Laing never lived to write. In the last two years of Laing's life, he recorded hundreds of hours of conversation with Robert Mullan in which he was determined to be as frank and open as possible, and equally determined to 'put the record straight'. R. D. Laing wrote a number of books during the 1960s which rocked the foundations of conventional psychiatry and galvanized the imagination of millions of ordinary readers. His views were against the grain of conventional psychiatry - his existential approach to madness was controversial, and his work brought into focus matters of individual liberty and the importance of the social context of 'illness'. The greatest accusation he suffered was that he idealised mental misery - something he consistently denied. Mad to be Normal presents Laing's own words, about his work and about his life. It is the most complete record on Laing, by Laing.Entertaining, maddening, surprising, impressive, occasionally scurrilous, and evoking a compelling portrait of the heady and sometimes self-regarding mood of the 1960s and early l970s, this books necessitates a reassessment of Laing and his work; work which is part of a lengthier and on-going process concerned with the routine care of those disturbed in mind.

Book SynopsisA hands-on user’s guide that takes readers step-by-step on a 21-day journey to discover what it means to be truly present and aware in our daily lives. In today’s increasingly fast-paced world it can be difficult to find moments to catch your breath, regain inner balance, and just … be. This simple yet profound guide shows readers how to strengthen their minds by learning to focus attention, open awareness, and develop a positive state of mind — the three pillars of mindfulness practice that research shows lead to greater physical and mental well-being. Packed with guided meditation instructions, practical exercises, and everyday tools and techniques, Becoming Aware offers a simple program to enhance our inner sense of clarity and even our interpersonal well-being.Trade ReviewPraise for Aware: ‘This is a Dan Siegel masterpiece. He integrates decades of science and wisdom about the nature of our mind and optimal well-being into an easy to read personal journey. At the cornerstone is “The Wheel of Awareness,” a simple yet profound visual map of the mind, which enables people, including children, to experience of presence, self knowledge, and compassion. Aware will awaken and enrich your life immeasurably!’ -- Elissa Epel, professor at UCSF, member of the National Academy of Science, co-author of New York Times bestseller The Telomere EffectPraise for Aware: ‘Dan is a brilliant integrator and Aware is a visionary blend of neuroscience, physics, and cutting edge psychology combined with creative approaches to mindfulness and compassion. The practice of the Wheel brings together many skilful and wise elements of meditation, all rolled into one.’ -- Jack Kornfield, author of The Wise Heart and No Time Like the PresentPraise for The Power of Showing Up: ‘Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson have written their best book yet — and that is saying a lot. They have distilled their parenting wisdom — based on neuroscience research and a deep empathy for children’s needs — into a profound concept: showing up. It is one of those great ideas that seems so obvious — but only after someone has shown it to you and spelled it out clearly. Best of all, Siegel and Bryson “show up” for the reader of this book. They know parents, know their fears and anxieties, hopes and dreams. They know that showing up for children is harder than it sounds, and they provide an accessible path to seeing and soothing children and providing them with safety and security.’ -- Lawrence J. Cohen, PhD, author of Playful ParentingPraise for The Power of Showing Up: ‘At a cultural moment when many kids feel more competition with their parents’ devices than with their siblings, Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson have spun a miracle — The Power of Showing Up is the ultimate guide to family reconnection. Clear, profound, and charmingly illustrated, it unravels the challenges of modern parenting and reveals the simple truths about what children really need from the adults in their lives.’ -- Wendy Mogel, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of The Blessing of a Skinned Knee and The Blessing of a B Minus

  • Narcissism and Its Discontents: Diagnostic

American Psychiatric Association Publishing Narcissism and Its Discontents: Diagnostic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe definition of narcissism can be a moving target. Is it an excess of self-love? Profound insecurity? Low self-esteem? Too much self-esteem? Because of the multifaceted nature of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), treating this disorder presents clinicians with a range of wholly unique challenges. Narcissism and Its Discontents recognizes the variable nature of NPD and provides a template for adjusting treatment to the patient rather than shoehorning the patient into a manualized treatment that may prove to be less effectual. This guide offers clinicians strategies, including transference and countertransference, to deal with the complex situations that often arise when treating narcissistic patients, among them, patient entitlement, disengagement, and envy. The authors provide a skillful integration of research and psychoanalytic theory while also addressing psychotherapeutic strategies that are less intensive but also useful—being cognizant of the fact that a majority of patients do not have access to psychoanalysis proper. A chapter on the cultural aspects of narcissism addresses the recent societal fascination with NPD in the discourse on politics and celebrity, particularly in the age of social media. Regardless of the treatment setting—psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, partial hospital, or inpatient—clinicians will find a wealth of approaches to treating a diverse and challenging patient population in Narcissism and Its Discontents.Trade ReviewNPD is a difficult entity to diagnose and treat. Even defining narcissism can be a daunting task, given its many "faces," its continuity with healthy self-interest and confidence, and its changing nature both throughout development and in the same patient faced with different environmental stressors. Thus, the authors' ability to cover all these topics and to create a multifaceted image of a narcissistic patient in only 150 pages is truly impressive. Most importantly, the book teaches how to think about NPD conceptually, taking into account each patient's unique character traits and circumstances. With that said, it would be impossible to cover everything related to NPD in a short book, and interested readers may want to look elsewhere to deepen their understanding of the topics this book covers. The authors provide plentiful references to encourage further exploration. It is important to note that, however broad, the focus is still primarily on psychoanalytically-oriented theories. While the role of other treatment modalities, such as group and couple therapies, is briefly discussed, other therapeutic techniques, including CBT and DBT, appear to be beyond the scope of this book. However, this is a comprehensive overview of NPD from multiple vantage points that is short, easy to read, and full of memorable examples that most clinicians can relate to. -- Marina Bayeva, M.D., Ph.D. * Doody's Book Review *This is a very timely and helpful contribution for clinicians and psychotherapists independent of the stage of their careers. It is also a most instructive and needed educational guide on the range of narcissistic pathology and its treatment. -- Elsa Ronningstam, Ph.D. * Journal of Psychiatric Practice May 2019 *Table of ContentsAbout the AuthorsPrefacePart I: Diagnostic DilemmasChapter 1. Book Synopsis‘Highly eloquent, fascinating and deeply compassionate’ Henry Marsh, author of Do No Harm We cannot know how to fix a problem until we understand its causes. But even for some of the most common mental health problems, specialists argue over whether the answers lie in the person’s biology, their psychology or their circumstances. As a cognitive neuropsychiatrist, Anthony David brings together many fields of enquiry, from social and cognitive psychology to neurology. The key for each patient might be anything from a traumatic memory to a chemical imbalance, an unhealthy way of thinking or a hidden tumour. Patrick believes he is dead. Jennifer's schizophrenia medication helped with her voices but did it cause Parkinson’s? Emma is in a coma – or is she just refusing to respond? Drawing from Professor David’s career as a clinician and academic, these fascinating case studies reveal the unique complexity of the human mind, stretching the limits of our understanding.Trade Review‘David’s stories are fascinating, and he does something quite remarkable with his tone. Here the obvious comparison is to the neurologist and prolific writer Oliver Sacks... Rarely have I read a book whose title is so true. Reading it was like standing on the edge of a great chasm and seeing how easily an unforeseen mishap could send any one of us tumbling in.’ -- New York Times‘A deeply moving book.’ * BBC Science *‘The first thing that comes across from the stories is David’s obvious compassion for his patients. This is typified not just by his thoughtful medical interventions and the doctor-patient conversations he recounts in vivid detail, but also by his willingness to raise hell with the relevant bureaucrats when pointless rules get in the way… David’s case studies are illuminating and benefit considerably from his warm, self-deprecating style.’ -- Dr Stuart Ritchie, Sunday Times‘A highly eloquent, fascinating and deeply compassionate book about the continuing mystery of mental illness and the cruel fallacy of seeing it as somehow less real and deserving than so-called physical illness.’ -- Henry Marsh CBE, neurosurgeon and author of Do No Harm'I was expecting this to make my brain hurt, but I was immediately hooked on it...A witty, humane and fascinating book.' -- Jo Brand‘The book leads the reader through each individual case with literary ease and clarity of explanation, generating understanding and a familiarity, as the reader becomes acquainted with each patient through his gentle, observant, often witty and always engaging narrative.’ -- Fortean Times‘Few are better suited to tell the story of our mental lives than Anthony David. He has written a beautiful, intimate book of the stories he's seen, one that probes at the nexus of the biological and societal...In his shoes, we get to step into the private realm of the psychiatrist's office, and often into the lingering questions left in the psychiatrist's mind.’ -- Dr David Eagleman, neuroscientist at Stanford University and author of Incognito and The Brain‘David writes interestingly and in detail (with the patients' permission) about the disorders which his seven patients suffer and the way these affect their lives. He tells of his own actions, the questions he asks, the responses of the patients to his investigations and treatments, and his difficulties in finding the causes of their disorders. He is honest, too, about his successes and failures […] David's interactions with his patients bring this book to life. He is interested in his patients as individuals and wants to work with them to find the cause of the problem and the most effective treatment […] In the end, looking at the functioning of the brain may be like looking into the abyss, but with this book David hopes to 'demystify psychiatry' and 'help us to change things for the better'.’ * Midwest Book Review *‘An illuminating, thoughtful and humane encounter with the human mind.’ -- Nathan Filer, author of This Book Will Change Your Mind About Mental Health‘Some years ago I told the BMJ that the three biggest influences on me were Anthony Clare, Anthony Soprano and Anthony David. The first sadly is no longer with us, the second never existed, but I am delighted to say that the third has just produced the book we knew he alone could. It’s a classic – warm, erudite, and endlessly fascinating. It reminds me of Oliver Sacks in his prime, and there is no higher praise.’ -- Sir Simon Wessely, Professor of Psychological Medicine, King's College London‘What an insightful and heartfelt book. Professor David's seven in-depth cases expose both the rifts and junctures of the brain and the disordered mind. By emphasizing the subjective inner life of his patients, he provides a welcome antidote to the reductionist thinking of modern medicine while still adhering to sound principles of neuroscience.’ -- Dr Alan Ropper, Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School and author of Reaching Down the Rabbit Hole: Extraordinary Journeys into the Human Brain'Anthony David brings alive the specialist language of neuropsychiatry – the medical domain where the brain meets the mind – in a series of erudite, insightful and sympathetic accounts of individual patients and their families. This book is written on the basis of a lifetime’s clinical experience but readable by anyone who wants to know more about some of the most challenging and perplexing disorders of consciousness, thought and emotion.' -- Dr Edward Bullmore, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Cambridge‘This powerful book can help everyone understand our minds better.’ -- Dr Rahul Jandial, author of Life Lessons from a Brain Surgeon'[R]eaders will be captivated... Fascinating stories from the practice of a skilled neuropsychiatrist.' -- Kirkus (Starred reviews)'Displaying intellectual curiosity and pragmatic compassion, David focuses on cases in which the physiological and the psychological converge… Readers will come away from this thoughtful work feeling a sense of connection to both the patients profiled and the practitioners who aim to understand them.' -- Publishers Weekly'Readers seeking a realistic approach to understanding the potential causes of mental illness will appreciate David’s thought-provoking reflections, as will mental health professionals and fans of Oliver Sacks’s The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.' -- Library Journal

Book SynopsisThis handbook is intended for clinicians with a range of expertise who employ a psychodynamic orientation in the assessment and/or treatment of patients with personality pathology. Well documented and articulate, this manual is appropriate for everyone from students of psychotherapy to experienced clinicians seeking to refine their practice. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Personality Disorders: A Clinical Handbook gathers in one place the psychodynamic psychotherapy thinking on each of the Axis II personality disorders. This includes the work of 22 contributing writers in addition to the three primary authors, John F. Clarkin, Ph.D., Peter Fonagy, Ph.D., and Glen O. Gabbard, M.D. The material presented here is available elsewhere but, until now, not all in one place. The focus of the book is the psychodynamic conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of the personality disorders as currently described in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR). Included are 16 chapters in three sections: Defining Personality Pathology, Treatment Approaches, and Research for Future Directions. The background of models of personality and its pathology comprises Section I. Section II contains chapters on the treatment of specific personality disorder constellations. These treatment chapters provide information on the relevant empirical research, patient phenomenology and psychodynamics, treatment strategies, and techniques, woven together with clinical illustrations and vignettes. Section III includes a summary of the existing treatment outcome research and a glimpse of the diagnostic procedures in the near future. Each of the chapter authors has had extensive clinical, and sometimes research, experience with the assessment and treatment of one of the personality disorders described. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Personality Disorders: A Clinical Handbook is, as titled, a practical handbook and guide to clinicians with real-world applications. • Every patient a clinician treats has personality issues, if not a personality disorder. This book provides strategies and techniques for addressing personality issues• DSM-IV-TR is proceeding to DSM-V. This collection of papers provides up-to-date information on how the personality disorders will be handled in the upcoming DSM-V• The authors provide summaries of key concepts and suggested readings of particular value to residents and students in other disciplines The authors suggest that new research and reviews indicate, to the surprise of many, that psychodynamic treatments are effective for these personality disorders, and its impact is as great as, that of cognitive-behavioral treatments.Trade ReviewThis collection of well-written, concise articles by international leaders in the field is a thorough exploration of the psychodynamic treatment of personality disorders. The volume provides a comprehensive overview of the filed as well as practical information that is expected from a clinical handbook. In addition to an extensive bibliography, each chapter includes a short list of suggested readings. -- David I. Joseph M.D. * The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry *Table of ContentsPreface. The New York Review of Books, Inc Three Christs Of Ypsilanti

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOn July 1, 1959, at Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, the social psychologist Milton Rokeach brought together three paranoid schizophrenics: Clyde Benson, an elderly farmer and alcoholic; Joseph Cassel, a failed writer who was institutionalized after increasingly violent behavior toward his family; and Leon Gabor, a college dropout and veteran of World War II. The men had one thing in common: each believed himself to be Jesus Christ. Their extraordinary meeting and the two years they spent in one another’s company serves as the basis for an investigation into the nature of human identity, belief, and delusion that is poignant, amusing, and at times disturbing. Displaying the sympathy and subtlety of a gifted novelist, Rokeach draws us into the lives of three troubled and profoundly different men who find themselves “confronted with the ultimate contradiction conceivable for human beings: more than one person claiming the same identity.”

Book SynopsisWhat challenges do 6-7-year-olds face as they learn new skills and face different social situations? How do their perceptions of the world change? How can we best support them in their move towards greater independence? This accessible book provides a wealth of information to help parents, educators and carers better relate to children at this exciting, yet demanding, stage of development. From the new-found sense of rivalry between siblings or classmates, to the anxieties children feel when making new friends, Corinne Aves offers guidance on encouraging children's development and helping them to cope with changing expectations of their behaviour. She discusses the various struggles in these children's lives – such as the conflict between a child's continuing desire to please his parents and the pressure to follow the leads of his friends – and gives tips for supporting children's increasing understanding of morality. Chapters on both school and family life explain the need for discipline and order in 'middle childhood', while specific areas of development such as reading skills and learning difficulties are addressed with sensitivity and insight. Understanding 6-7-Year-Olds will prove an enlightening read for anyone hoping to better understand children at this important stage of their lives.Trade ReviewClearly based on a strict psychoanalytical perspective, this UK book is also grounded in the everyday experiences of children and informed by a lively commitment to their well-being... Not only a useful tome but also humane, intelligent and endlessly thought-provoking. -- Youthinmind.co.ukAves, a child psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic, describes the experiences of six and seven year olds and how parents and educators can understand them and help them develop. In this slim volume, she explains their changing perceptions of themselves, how they understand their role in the family, school experiences and social interactions, learning to read, and their unique anxieties. -- Book NewsAs my youngest child is just coming up to her sixth birthday I was hoping to gain a new insight into her world with this book. I wasn't disappointed, as a Childcare provider we aim to treat all children as individuals but most of our training seems to be aimed at the 0-5 age range. There is a tendency to feel that older children are moving along happily and unless there are any obvious problems they can be slightly overlooked. This book was fascinating explaining the physical and mental changes that children undergo during this time. Moving from being a young child with a belief in the magical side of life to an independent learner finding their way in the world. Corinne Aves has observed children at school and during play and includes anecdotes from home as well to illustrate her points.Written in a friendly, approachable style this book would be suitable for parents, however I feel it is aimed the key stage one teachers more specifically. -- National Childminding AssociationTable of ContentsContents: Foreword, Jonathan Bradley. • Hoarding Disorder: A Comprehensive Clinical Guide

American Psychiatric Association Publishing Hoarding Disorder: A Comprehensive Clinical Guide

Book SynopsisAccounts of hoarding behaviors have appeared in literature, as far back as 319 B.C.E. in the writings of Aristotle's student Theophrastus; in the news, like New York's infamous Collyer brothers in the 1940s; and more recently in popular reality television series. But it wasn't until the publication of DSM-5 in 2013 that hoarding was classified as a disorder in its own right rather than as a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. In this single source, readers can access the most up-to-date comprehensive information on what is known about the disorder. Drawing on the authors' own clinical experiences as well as the latest published research, Hoarding Disorder: A Comprehensive Clinical Guide examines key features of the disorder and treatment approaches, such as: • Phenomenology, including diagnosis, comorbidities, and assessment• Etiology, from both a cognitive-behavioral and a neurobiological perspective• Psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatments, from cognitive-behavioral therapy, harm reduction strategies, and community approaches to the efficacy of specific drugs• Challenges, including working with elderly patients, managing cases of animal hoarding, and distinguishing and addressing squalor Key points for each chapter and numerous case studies will help readers easily reference and retain information, and the appendices feature useful symptom rating scales that can be applied to practice. For psychiatrists, psychologists, human service and other mental health professionals, peer support counselors, community advocates, and professionals in training, this invaluable book will improve the reader's knowledge and skill in treating patients with hoarding disorder, both those with straightforward presentations and those with complicated ones.Table of ContentsAbout the Authors PrefaceAcknowledgments Part I: Phenomenology Chapter 1. Book SynopsisOver recent decades, attachment theory has come to be seen as fundamental to understanding not only childhood development and how people survive and grow, but also the capacity of partners, parents and carers to offer safe and consistent care, particularly under difficult conditions. Book SynopsisUnlocking the Nature of Human Aggression is a neuropsychoanalytic and scientific exploration of aggression and argues for its central role in psychopathology and the genesis of individual symptoms, as well as in broader systemic conflicts and violence. Adrian Perkel creates a unique theoretical approach to the various manifestations we encounter of individual, group, and geo-political aggression and destructiveness. Based on psychoanalytic investigations of this dynamic and Freud's incomplete exploration of this human drive, this book seeks to understand the science of aggression that Freud himself suggested would be possible with time and scientific development. Perkel investigates the commonplace inversion of the perpetrator and victim narratives, navigating through the complexity of how the aggressive drive, often driven by feelings aimed at homeostatic regulation, challenges the perception of any objective view of who is perpetrator and who victim. He includes hiTrade Review"This book is an essential read for clinicians who work psychotherapeutically with individuals, couples and families, as well as for academics and the general reader interested in deepening their understanding of how the two psychic drives, sexuality and aggression, interact and can affect individuals, communities, and humanity as a whole. The author presents complex psychoanalytic and neuroscientific ideas in an uncomplicated and straightforward way, effortlessly deepening our understanding of historical and current geo-political aggressions from a theoretical and neurobiological viewpoint."Dr Amita Sehgal, MA, PhD, Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, The Balint Consultancy, London. "Dr Perkel offers us an outstanding exploration of human aggression that draws on selected psychoanalytic and neuroscientific sources. Particularly impressive is the way in which he weaves clinical and sociohistorical material into his theoretical discussion. Book SynopsisA clear and comprehensive review of contemporary psychodynamic theory and clinical practice for both novice and experienced therapists. Covering the key applications of psychodynamic psychotherapy to a range of presentations and guiding the reader through the psychodynamics of staff-client relationships and the development of reflective practice--Trade Review'Unlike psychoanalytic authors whose writing is oriented mainly toward colleagues with extensive analytic training, these contributors intend their chapters to reach audiences that may be new to a psychoanalytic frame of reference, or sceptical of it, or confused by it. Somehow, they have also made the book interesting and clinically relevant to experienced psychoanalytic readers … I know from experience that it is not easy to produce a multi-authored compendium whose final product embodies an overall continuity and integration, and so I am impressed that the authors of this volume have managed that feat. I urge readers of all mental health disciplines, professional involvements, and theoretical orientations to spend time with this worthy and important book. I think you will find it as fascinating and clinically helpful as I did.' Nancy McWilliams, Ph.D., Distinguished Retired Professor, Rutgers Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology'I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found it accessible and informative. The various authors conveyed the principles, practices, research, theories, and history of psychoanalysis in a way that was engaging and easy to understand, even for those such as myself, from outside the field. For clinicians (specialists and generalists alike) understanding the unconscious processes taking place in the consulting room can be invaluable in delivering effective care to our patients, and this book was able to provide insights into this important area.' Dame Clare Gerada, President, Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), PRCGP FRCPsych FRCP (Hons)'This excellent book does exactly what it says it will; to be a guide to what psychodynamic psychotherapy is, how to do it well and for whom it works best. For too long, psychodynamic psychotherapy has been plagued by what we now might call 'deep fakes'; first, that the idea that psychological therapists who think this way holds strange and esoteric sets of beliefs about how the mind works, and second, that there is no evidence that treatments based on this paradigm might be helpful. This helpful book outlines why both ideas have been conclusively proved wrong. I have no doubt that the future of psychiatry needs to be psychodynamic, and this book shows why psychodynamic thinking applied to psychiatry not only makes it more interesting, but makes us as psychiatrists more human and more effective.' Book SynopsisDesigned as a companion to the Forensic Psychiatry (Oxford Specialist Handbook), Second Edition, this new casebook complements the domains of both theory and practice put forward in the handbook, but also works as a standalone volume for those who wishes to enhance their decision making in cases they may confront in their discipline. Organised into three sections, the casebook allows the practitioner to think through not only the technical medical aspects of real-life clinical cases, but also the legal and ethical aspects. Part A provides an introduction to the theory and practice of decision-making; Part B presents cases across clinical, legal, and ethical domains; and Part C offers frameworks for critiquing decisions. This robustly discursive approach to a fact-based but also value-laden discipline enhances the opportunity to put knowledge into practice. The Oxford Casebook of Forensic Psychiatry expresses the concept that ''knowing is the only part of deciding'', offering an essential practitioner''s guide to decision making in clinical, forensic, and legal psychiatry.Table of ContentsPart A: Decision making A.1: Decision making theories A.2: Decision making in practice Part B: Cases B.1: Clinical cases B.2: Ethical cases B.3: Criminal law cases B.4: Civil law cases B.5: Mental capacity and mental health law cases Part C: Critiquing decisions C.1: The critique matrix C.2: Legal critiquing in general C.3: A case study of critiquing clinical decision making within multiple paradigms C.4: Other specific critique paradigms C.5: Conclusion: self-critique as the gold standard
