Edition Axel Menges The Wings of the Crane, 50 Years of Lufthansa
Book SynopsisText in English and German. The basic features of Deutsche Lufthansa's present corporate image emerged almost 45 years ago. It was created by Otl Aicher, one of the principal figures at the now legendary Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm. Another work by Aicher that spoke to the whole of Germany, as it were (and still does, in rudiments), is the 1972 corporate image for the Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen. The corporate image he created for the Olympic Games in Munich, which made an essential contribution to the ambience of the event, has also remained memorable. Since the ideas developed by Aicher and his colleagues were implemented in the early sixties, the airline has been seen world-wide as a perfect example of a consistently developed corporate image. Aicher based himself on ideas from the Deutscher Werkbund and took the company's entire inventory into consideration: "house colours, pictorial and typographic logos, typeface, graphic and typographic rules and standards, photographic style, quality of support materials, packaging, exhibition systems, architectural characteristics, forms (design) of interior furnishings and equipment, style of work and service clothes". As well as Otl Aicher, numerous other product and graphic designers, fashion designers and advertising and marketing agencies have worked for Lufthansa. They include Otto Firle, whose ideas led to the crane logo, Hartmut Esslinger and his company frog design, Priestman & Goode, Müller Romca Industriedesign, Don Wallance, Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Hans Theo Baumann, Nick Roericht, Wolfgang Karnagel, Topel & Pauser and the bhar design practice, fashion designers Uli Richter, Ursula Tautz and Werner Machnick, Jürgen Weiss, Gabriele Strehle and the Jobis company as well as the agencies Zintzmeyer & Lux, the Peter Schmidt Group, Ogilvy & Mather, Young & Rubicam, Spiess/Ermisch/Abel, Springer & Jacoby, McCann & Erickson and Fanghänel & Lohmann. An exhibition of the same name at the Museum for Applied Arts in Frankfurt deals with the same subject as the book.

Edition Axel Menges BRAUN--Fifty Years of Design and Innovation:
Book SynopsisBraun products have been shown more frequently at exhibitions than those of any other comparable company. Some people find that they reflect basic human values such as authenticity and integrity. For others, they are the very incarnation of German perfectionism. Braun is not merely a trademark; it stands for an all-encompassing concept. For the last five decades, this concept has spawned innovative products with an unprecedented regularity that begs to be explained -- especially as the era spanned by the history of Braun design is not exactly one characterised by continuity. Instead, the second half of the 20th century witnessed a dramatic change in living conditions. Prosperity and greater ease entered our daily lives, but also widespread disorientation and alienation. It is to the credit of those who set the Braun design project in motion that they were able to counteract this feeling of alienation -- which manifested itself to them not least in poorly designed objects of daily use -- with a vision of design reform. There had already been attempts made along these lines. What was new was that a commercial enterprise spearheaded the movement. Also new was the systematic approach, the application of design principles to modern products and the innovative dynamic thus triggered. Finally, the considerable commercial success this design project enjoyed was likewise a revelation. All of this led the company to establish a design department that was not merely an appendage, but rather an active decision-maker in the development of products from the initial idea to realisation. This is how Braun and design became synonymous.

Vitra Design Museum The Vitra Schaudepot: Architecture, Ideas,
Book SynopsisThe Vitra Design Museum Collection is one of the most important design collections in the world. It totals around 20,000 items, including 7,000 pieces of furniture, over 1,000 lighting objects and archives and estates from designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard. In summer 2016, the museum opened a building by architects Herzog & de Meuron to permanently present this collection: the Vitra Schaudepot. The centerpiece of the Schaudepot is a permanent exhibition of more than 400 key objects of modern furniture design from 1800 to the present. This presentation is complemented by smaller temporary exhibitions on themes related to the collection, a material library and an extensive digital catalogue. The Schaudepot constitutes the largest permanent exhibition on modern furniture design and at the same time a ‘transparent design museum’, making visible the work of the museum in all its facets. The publication sheds light on different aspects of the Schaudepot. The iconic building is illustrated in largescale photographs and drawings. The presentation of the collection in the interior is likewise shown using insightful imagery, augmented by a chronological overview of the exhibited objects. Short essays embed the objects within the context of design history and bring to light the curatorial decision-making behind the presented objects. The book is an attractive field guide through the history of furniture design and act as a portal to understand the Vitra Design Museum’s unique collection – at the same time being the publication on one of the latest buildings by star architects Herzog & de Meuron.

Vitra Design Museum Typecasting: An Assembly of Iconic, Forgotten and
Book Synopsis An Assembly of Iconic, Forgotten and New Vitra Characters During Milan’s Design Week 2018, the Vitra exhibition »Typecasting,« curated by Robert Stadler, presented 200 objects in the former sports hall La Pelota in the city’s Brera district. In addition to generous photographic documentation of the event, this eponymous publication , designed by Zak Group, critically investigates how design evolves under the influ ence of social media. By presenting the objects as characters, »Typecasting« is as much about furniture as it is about ourselves. Whereas furniture’s practical function is a given, its representational role has dramatically evolved: furniture and objects become props for self-staging on social media and online.

Vitra Design Museum Plastic: Remaking Our World: Remaking Our World
Book SynopsisPlastic has shaped our daily lives like no other material. Originally associated with convenience, progress, even revolution, today plastic seems to have lost its utopian appeal. Plastic is everywhere, yet most conspicuous as waste and as a key factor in the global environmental crisis. This book examines the success story of plastic in the twentieth century and at the same time presents the different discourses on how we should manage the waste the material produces and also find solutions that take into account its entire life cycle in the future. Mark Miodownik, Susan Freinkel, and Nanjala Nyabola each contribute an essay that sheds light on the history of plastics from 1850 to today. A material-rich visual chronology illustrates how consumers’ perception of plastics has changed over the decades. Brief descriptions of a selection of 50 objects examine the importance of plastics for material culture. Reprints of fundamental texts about the history of plastics—for example by Alexander Parkes and Roland Barthes—provide a context from the history of ideas. The book reflects the current discourse and state of research on plastic with numerous individual interviews and panel discussions that were held with designers, representatives from industry, researchers, and environmental activists. Underpinning these conversations are comprehensive data visualizations on plastic production and consumption, recycling.

Cappelen Damm Akademisk Idea Work: Lessons of the Extraordinary in
Book SynopsisWhat does it take to find oil in an area where many have tried, but failed? What does it take to design buildings that become prize-winning cultural landmarks? And what can the best architects, oil explorers, business lawyers, journalists, and business developers within banking and trading analysis have in common? Idea Work can provide the answers. This book builds on a four-year research project and describes what extraordinary idea work looks like in practice. The authors take you behind the scenes of some of Norway''s leading companies and show how surprisingly similarly they work when they are working creatively to develop and realise new ideas. The book gives us, for example, a glimpse of how Snøhetta designed the Opera and the 9/11 memorial, and how explorers at Statoil discovered the most oil of all oil companies in the world in 2011. Narratives are presented on how prepping, sketches, pin-ups, drama, wonder, and punk are important aspects of the extraordinary. Examples are supported by theory, placing this book at the forefront of international research. Idea Work will appeal to practitioners as well as students. It recounts engaging stories from actual production processes and combines new theoretical perspectives with practical advice. It will also be of interest to anyone working with development, particularly with developing new ideas. From a professional standpoint, this book is an uncommon contribution to describing and understanding creativity as something collective and grounded in everyday activity.

The volume investigates Aldo Rossi’s activity in the design sector in its entirety, presenting the furnishings and objects designed and manufactured from 1960 to 1997. Among these, some pieces well known to the public stand out, such as the La Conica and La Cupola coffee makers by Alessi, the Cabina dell’Elba by Bruno Longoni Atelier d’Arredo or the Paris chair by Unifor, just to name a few. The analysis of this production, which also includes unpublished projects and prototypes, highlights the continuous and constant relationship with architecture, while the technical drawings and photographic and archival documentation help to restore the history of each piece. The volume includes a critical essay by Domitilla Dardi. Text in English and Italian.Trade ReviewChosen as one of Airmail’s 28 Best Coffee-Table Books of 2022 Airmail - Airmail

Silvana Robert Mathieu: Luminaires rationnels
Book SynopsisThe greatest designer of French lighting, Robert Mathieu, is still little known to the general public today due to the rarity of his pieces on the market, highly sought after by specialised collectors. Unlike a traditional designer, Robert Mathieu not only designed his lights, but he made them, like an artist, in his studio on rue de Charenton in Paris. Here there is no publisher, but a dropper production close to that of a work of art, sometimes less than eight copies. What is remarkable about Robert Mathieu is on the one hand his unique creativity in France, because he has designed more than 200 models, but also the very high quality of execution of his pieces which are still in perfect condition today. This unpublished monographic work is born after 10 years of preparation. Between the beautiful art book and the catalogue raisonné, it presents all the known models of this lighting artist, illustrated by studio photographs and period documentation or non-professional photographic testimonials, because a large number of the creations by Robert Mathieu have never been seen before. Text in English and French.

Skira Guzzini: Infinite Italian Design
Book Synopsis100 years of history of one of the most innovative companies promoting Italian design. This book describes the development of the Guzzini’s company: 100 years of history set out in fascinating details, with a succession of protagonists of Italian and international culture such as Gillo Dorfles, Oscar Farinetti, Aldo Bonomi, Robin Levien, Angeletti Ruzza, Karim Rashid, and many other leading designers. The seed of innovation was already present in Fratelli Guzzini from the year of the company’s birth in 1912. This seed of innovation was made fertile by Enrico Guzzini, a man who drew upon his experiences to set about re-launching an ancient craft, producing elegant ox horn items. From that time on, the company’s history has been characterized by a series of decisively innovatory milestones. With the introduction of moulded acrylics at the beginning of the 1960s, the company showed a more open approach to business by importing the creative concepts of some of the best minds in design. This was followed by the development of the bicolour project in the 1980s, then the leap to gas-assisted injection in the 1990s, to current research on new plastic materials, usefully combining them with futuristic acrylics or more classical traditional materials, such as porcelain, glass, steel and wood, and with the work of the most talented contemporary designers. The result is a vast catalogue of all types of items beautifully designed but easy to use, familiar, inexpensive, extremely practical, and recyclable.
