Flame Tree Publishing Liz Somerville Wall Calendar 2025 Art Calendar
Book SynopsisPainter and printmaker Liz Somerville graduated from Winchester School of Art in 1988 with a degree in textile design and spent sixteen years working as a designer in London, before moving to Dorset and becoming a full-time artist. Her work has been exhibited widely in galleries and exhibitions within the UK, including The Royal West of England Academy in Bristol and the Russell-Cotes Museum in Bournemouth. Liz relishes creating scenes with a story for the viewer to find, and is drawn to the lie and flow of the land, unexpected colour, traces of past use, texture and form. She mixes print and paint, which lends a fluid quality to the sometimes static nature of a conventional print. This calendar showcases 12 of her striking landscapes. The datepad features previous and next months views in this art calendar. Printed on FSC-certified paper, with plastic-free packaging.

Figure 1 Publishing Echoes of the Supernatural: The Graphic Art of
Book SynopsisOver six decades of brilliant prints and paintings from the most prominent Northwest Coast artist of his generation.Finalist for the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize, a BC & Yukon Book Prize Since leaving Haida Gwaii to study art in Vancouver—where he carved argillite with Bill Reid in a department store and hand-sold prints on the UBC campus—Guud sans glans, Robert Davidson has moved between two worlds. As a host of Potlatches, carver of masks and totem poles, and performer and teacher of traditional Haida songs and dances, he has been one of the driving forces in the resurgence of Haida culture in the aftermath of colonization. As an artist working in serigraphs, acrylic, wood, silver, and aluminum to preserve and breathe new life into Haida formline, he has become among the most respected, celebrated, and thrilling artists in the country, if not the world.Echoes of the Supernatural is the first publication in over forty years to offer a comprehensive visual retrospective of his astonishing career. It includes new photography of over 150 prints, as well as images of over fifty paintings; numerous painted woven hats, painted and carved sculptures, jewellery, aluminum sculpture; and dozens of archival photos. His long-time gallerist Gary Wyatt, who worked closely with Davidson in shaping the book and received full access to his archives, details the artist’s life and career, and offers insights on the work based on extensive new interviews. A foreword by Karen Duffek situates the contours of Davidson’s practice within the broader Northwest Coast art world. Trade Review"The book is a visual marvel, with its bold colours and the dramatic curves of Haida formline, aspects that are incorporated into its design, including the stunning cover."—Galleries West"This singularly gorgeous book showcases the extraordinary work of Guud San Glans Robert Davidson, one of the world’s most innovative and influential contemporary Indigenous artists. Echoes of the Supernatural is art publishing at its best, delivering a volume of breath-taking textual and print quality"—British Columbia Review"Since the 1960s, Guud san glans Robert Davidson has been instrumental in the renaissance of Haida art and culture and has long been appreciated as one of the most inventive artists working within Haida artistic traditions." —Broadway World"A stunning and interesting collection of Davidson’s prints, paintings, and drawings."—Calgary Herald"Robert Davidson is a modern master who helped spark a renaissance."—Vancouver Sun"Davidson described his role in the resurgence of Northwest Coast art and culture as one of not only solving the "puzzle", but of bringing it back.—Stir"A big and bountiful book, by independent writer and curator Gary Wyatt, it is jointly published by the VAG and Figure.1—not as a catalogue to the show but as a separate and distinct record of Davidson’s astounding achievements in two-dimensional art forms."—Preview Art Magazine

Manchester University Press Perspectives on Contemporary Printmaking:
Book SynopsisThis anthology, the first of its kind, presents thirty-two texts on contemporary prints and printmaking written from the mid-1980s to the present by authors from across the world. The texts range from history and criticism to creative writing. More than a general survey, they provide a critical topography of artistic printmaking during the period. The book is directed at an audience of international stakeholders in the field of contemporary print, printmaking and printmedia, including art students, practising artists, museum curators, critics, educationalists, print publishers and print scholars. It expands debate in the field and will act as a starting point for further research.Trade Review‘This will be a significant and important contribution to the field and practice of printmaking and print media. The volume will be vital in MFA professional practice classes, and on theory and art historical courses.’Mary Hood, Artist‘Dr Ruth Pelzer-Montadas publication is an excellent compilation of selected text spanning 3 decades. This topographical discourse points to essential aspects concerning the critical discussions and the debates on contemporary print and printmaking and the tectonic shift of it.’Jan Pettersson, Professor, Head of Print & Drawing, Department for Art & Craft, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Norway‘Combining the methodology of a practicing printmaker with the perception of a theorist, Pelzer-Montada assembles key texts on printmaking and print cultures into a comprehensive anthology of writings that reveals the depth and range of thinking and debate on this subject. A long overdue critical framing of print art, this book fulfills the need for a re-evaluation of the importance and ubiquity of print, mapping out its potential in a “post-print” society. […] These writings establish a genealogy of print grounded in society’s desire to maintain, record and disseminate its reflective thinking processes – that have ultimately shaped and evolved our need to communicate.’Andrew Folan, Head of Print, National College of Art and Design, Dublin‘Perspectives on contemporary printmaking is a brilliant book! A manual like this has been longed for both in the academic world and in the studios and printshops; most thoughtful theoretical analysis of printmaking art, assembled into a single anthology. It is informative, well-organized, and knowledgeable. I particularly enjoyed the carefully formulated division into four separate parts, accompanied with Ruth Pelzer-Montadas insightful introductions. It’s already a classic, the only of its kind. Highly and cordially recommended!’Annu Vertanen, artist, professor in printmaking, University of Arts, Helsinki'Perspectives on contemporary printmaking, edited by Ruth Pelzer-Montada, is an excellent, lively collection of 32 essays focusing on the status, ontology and philosophy of print in the contemporary arena […] The varying voices are all engaging, some challenging, some beautifully articulated, provoking rumination and providing ammunition for making print the centre of our conversation.'Wuon-Gean Ho, Printmaking Today (Winter 2018)‘In this compact impressive tome, the editor has grouped together relevant themes and writings, which form a kind of activist’s bible or tool of resistance to not only make sense of what has occurred these last thirty years, but to assert why it matters and why printmaking is still an active participant of change and a vital force of ideas. In many ways, this astute editor enables a better understanding of how knowledge is inextricably linked to the print form as she traces an unbroken seam of print production from its origins through to today.’Imprint -- .Table of ContentsIntroductionPart I: GenealogyBeat Wyss – Fragments for an art history of media: electr(on)ic thinking (1997)Ernst Rebel – The technical gaze: the parallel world of photography (2003)Frances Robertson – Post-print culture? Getty Trust Publications Sam Francis - The Artist's Materials
Book SynopsisAmerican artist Sam Francis (1923-1994) brought vivid colour and emotional intensity to Abstract Expressionism. He was described as the "most sensuous and sensitive painter of his generation" by former Guggenheim Museum director James Johnson Sweeney, and curator Howard Fox called him "one of the acknowledged masters of late-modern art." Francis's works, whether intimate or monumental in scale, make indelible impressions; the intention of the artist was to make them felt as much as seen. At the age of twenty, Francis was hospitalised for spinal tuberculosis and spent three years virtually immobilised in a body cast. For physical therapy he was given a set of watercolours, and, as he described it, he painted his way back to life. The exuberant colour and expression in his paintings celebrated his survival; his five-decade career was an energetic visual and theoretical exploration that took him around the world. Francis' idiosyncratic painting practices have long been the subject of speculation and debate among conservators and art historians. Presented here for the first time in this volume are the results of an in-depth scientific study of more than forty paintings from the late 1940s to early 1990s, which reveal new discoveries about his creative process, inventive techniques, and specially formulated paints and binders. The data provides a key to the complicated evolution of the artist's work and informs original art historical interpretations.

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Cutting Edge: Modernist British Printmaking
Book SynopsisA vividly illustrated catalogue of linocuts by the Modern British printmakers of the Grosvenor School of Art. The Grosvenor School of Modern Art was founded by the influential teacher, painter and wood-engraver Iain McNab in 1925. Situated in London’s Pimlico district, the school played a key role in the story of modern British printmaking between the World Wars. The Grosvenor School artists received critical acclaim in their time that continued until the late 1930s under the influence of Claude Flight who pioneered a revolutionary method of making the simple linocut to dynamic and colourful effect. Cyril Power, a lecturer in architecture at the school, and Sybil Andrews, the School Secretary, were two of Flight’s star students. Whilst incorporating the avant-garde values of Cubism, Futurism and Vorticism, the Grosvenor School printmakers brought their own unique interpretation of the contemporary world to the medium of linocut in images that are strikingly familiar to this day. They are included in the print collections of the world’s major museums, including the British Museum, the MoMA in New York and the Australian National Gallery. Cutting Edge, which accompanied an exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, illustrates over 120 linocuts, drawings and posters by Grosvenor School artists; its thematic layout focuses on the key components which made up their dynamic and rhythmic visual imagery. For the first time, three Australian printmakers, Dorrit Black, Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme - who played a major part in the Grosvenor School story - are included in a major museum exhibition outside of Australia.Table of ContentsDirector’s Foreword – Jennifer Scott Preface – Gordon Samuel Life in Linocuts: The Printmakers of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art – Hana Leaper 1. Prestel Hokusai: Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji
Book SynopsisHokusai’s series depicting Mount Fuji is widely considered to be the pinnacle of his career. This beautiful boxed accordion- fold edition comprises the full set of forty-six prints (the original thirty-six and ten more that were completed later) and features a luxurious silken binding along with a separate explanatory booklet. The book and booklet are packaged in an elegant slipcase. Devoted entirely to landscapes, Hokusai’s series shows Mount Fuji from various viewpoints, framed in different ways. An indefatigable traveler who was passionate about nature, Hokusai explored every vantage point and season at the volcano. He presented it both as a solitary and majestic snow-capped peak and as a smaller object on a distant horizon. Hokusai also portrayed the mountain as an element in Japanese daily life and as an imposing force of nature that can be peaceful and beneficent, or ferocious and unforgiving. These impeccably reproduced prints invite readers to examine Hokusai’s virtuosic use of color and composition, his talent for contrasting perspectives, and his interest in the dueling roles of man and nature. An exquisite objet d’art, this volume is the perfect vehicle for appreciating Hokusai’s crowning achievement in all its lasting and subtle beauty.Trade Review"Hokusai: Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, compactly presented in a handsome slipcase, opens up like a nigh-on infinitely expandable concertina of a book...This magnificent suite of woodblock prints feels as homey as it is exalted." —Hyperallergic"Hokusai: Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, compactly presented in a handsome slipcase, opens up like a nigh-on infinitely expandable concertina of a book, in wave after wave after wave of images of daily life as it proceeded in the eye of that dreamily cloud-wreathed sacred mountain...This magnificent suite of woodblock prints feels as homey as it is exalted.
