  • Lucas Cranach: A-Z

    Hatje Cantz Lucas Cranach: A-Z

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLucas Cranach the Elder created around 500 works during his lifetime. With his portraits of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchton and as court painter to Frederick the Wise, he became one of the most sought-after painters of the Reformation. At the same time, Cranach was the first to translate the Italian Renaissance tradition of the life-size nude into art north of the Alps; his lascivious, barely veiled depiction of Venus, the goddess of love, bears witness to this. On the occasion of the large Cranach exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Austrian writer Teresa Präauer explores the work of this busy prince of painters from A to Z. She focuses not only on Cranach's art, but also on the society that surrounded him, the subjects he painted, and the events that shaped his development.

  • Robert Motherwell: Pure Painting

Hatje Cantz Robert Motherwell: Pure Painting

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn intensely intellectual painter, Robert Motherwell is renowned for his distinctive Abstract Expressionist style. The seminal artist permeated his gestural works with an expressionism and austerity reflective of the human psyche; at the same time his oeuvre addressed political and humanitarian themes. Robert Motherwell: Pure Painting is an in-depth exploration of his artistic practice. Leading art scholars examine the American artist’s turn from Surrealism to abstraction and analyze the major series that developed over his fifty-year career. The catalogue studies the dialogue between Motherwell’s art and the nineteenth-century French painting tradition, investigates his relationship to Spanish techniques and processes, with an emphasis on their underlying political significance, and delves into Motherwell’s use of ochre pigment, with its evocation of both deep geological time and avant-garde practices.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisConrad Felixmüller (1897–1977) is regarded as one of the most important representatives of the Second Generation of German Expressionism. He celebrated initial major successes with his art during the Weimar Republic. This volume illustrates the life and work of this unusual artist, whose creative career reflects more than half a century of art and contemporary history. In January 1919 Felixmüller founded the avant-garde Dresdner Sezession Gruppe 1919, whose members also included Otto Dix and Peter August Böckstiegel as well as other fellow artists. The works from the early 1920s reflect not only his interest in these people but also his political commitment. Under National Socialism Felixmüller’s works were proscribed as “degenerate”; after 1945 he endeavoured to continue his work in the GDR, albeit under new auspices. Ten years before his death, Felixmüller moved to West Berlin, where he lived to see the rediscovery of his work.

  • Cranach: The Early Years in Vienna

Hirmer Verlag Cranach: The Early Years in Vienna

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAround 1500, Lucas Cranach the Elder steps onto the world stage – in Vienna. The publication explores this, the artist’s earliest period of work and presents all the paintings he produced during this time, their expressiveness radically different from the courtly-elegant compositions he subsequently produced as court painter in Wittenberg. Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1553) produced his earliest works around 1500 in Vienna, shortly before moving to Wittenberg to become court painter to the Elector of Saxony. These brilliant paintings, drawings, and woodcuts document both the thirty-year-old’s close contacts with the humanist circles of Konrad Celtis and Johannes Cuspinian, and identify him as a precursor of the so-called Danube School.

Book SynopsisHow do artists ensure that their works will still be known in later centuries? How do they reach a public in distant places? In around 1600 the answer was: via prints. Through their exceptional works and marketing strategies in this medium, Hendrick Goltzius (15581617) and Peter Paul Rubens (15771640) earned international and lasting success. Engravings are easy to reproduce and distribute, and so in around 1600 they became the perfect ambassadors for artists. With a selection of 140 brilliant engravings, this volume shows that Goltzius and Rubens were highly innovative and strategically astute in their use of this medium, seeking to beguile their audience, arouse desires and disseminate their own new artworks. In addition to their paintings, the engravings became sought-after collectors' items which played a decisive part in the promotion of the careers of both artists.

Taschen GmbH Hiroshige & Eisen. The Sixty-Nine Stations along

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Kisokaidō route through Japan was ordained in the early 1600s by the country’s then-ruler Tokugawa Ieyasu, who decreed that staging posts be installed along the length of the arduous passage between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. Inns, shops, and restaurants were established to provide sustenance and lodging to weary travelers. In 1835, renowned woodblock print artist Keisai Eisen was commissioned to create a series of works to chart the Kisokaidō journey. After producing 24 prints, Eisen was replaced by Utagawa Hiroshige, who completed the series of 70 prints in 1838. Both Eisen and Hiroshige were master print practitioners. In The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaidō, we find the artists’ distinct styles as much as their shared expertise. From the busy starting post of Nihonbashi to the castle town of Iwamurata, Eisen opts for a more muted palette but excels in figuration, particularly of glamorous women, and relishes snapshots of activity along the route, from shoeing a horse to winnowing rice. Hiroshige demonstrates his mastery of landscape with grandiose and evocative scenes, whether it’s the peaceful banks of the Ota River, the forbidding Wada Pass, or a moonlit ascent between Yawata and Mochizuki. Taken as a whole, The Sixty-Nine Stations collection represents not only a masterpiece of woodblock practice, including bold compositions and an experimental use of color, but also a charming tapestry of 19th-century Japan, long before the specter of industrialization. This TASCHEN XXL edition revives the series with due scale and splendor. Sourced from the only-known set of a near-complete run of the first edition of the series, this legendary publication is reproduced in the finest quality, bound in the Japanese tradition and with uncut paper. A perfect companion piece to TASCHEN’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, it is at once a visual delight and a major artifact from the bygone era of Imperial Japan.Trade Review“A masterpiece of Japanese woodblock prints, an exquisitely designed illustrated book.” * Kulturzeit *“An incredible ticket to travel.” * L’Express *“Spectacular views, local delicacies, hot spring baths, and other more carnal pursuits.” * The New York Times *

Taschen GmbH Hokusai. Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisMount Fuji has long been a centerpiece of Japanese cultural imagination, and nothing captures this with more virtuosity than the landmark woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). The renowned printmaker documents 19th-century Japan with exceptional artistry and adoration, celebrating its countryside, cities, people, and serene natural beauty. Produced at the peak of Hokusai’s artistic ambition, the series is a quintessential work of ukiyo-e that earned the artist world-wide recognition as a leading master of his craft. The prints illustrate Hokusai’s own obsession with Mount Fuji as well as the flourishing domestic tourism of the late Edo period. Just as the mountain was a cherished view for travelers heading to the capital Edo (now Tokyo) along the Tōkaidō road, Mount Fuji is the infallible backdrop to each of the series’ unique scenes. Hokusai captures the distinctive landscape and provincial charm of each setting with a vivid palette and exquisite detail. Including the iconic Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa (also The Great Wave), this widely celebrated series is a treasure of international art history. Among only a few complete reprints of the series, this XXL edition pays homage to Hokusai’s striking colors and compositions with unprecedented care and magnitude. Bound in the Japanese tradition with uncut paper, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji presents the original 36 plates plus the additional 10 later added by the artist. The perfect companion piece to TASCHEN’s One Hundred Views of Edo and The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaidō, this publication paints an enchanting picture of pre-industrial Japan and is itself a stunning monument to the art of woodblock printing.Trade Review“Shares the late great’s fascination with the dormant volcano through his original series of 36 prints.” * mymodernmet.com *“A visually stunning reproduction of the great Japanese printmaker’s most famous series.” * The Times *“The year’s most beautiful art volume celebrates Hokusai’s big wave, snow-capped peak, tourists on the bridge, not just as beloved images but for the exquisite craft of woodblock printing. An object of luxurious, tactile delight — Japanese traditional binding, uncut paper, silken box with wooden closures — enhanced by insightful commentary.” * The Financial Times *“From the age of five, I have had a mania for sketching the form of things.” * Hokusai *“ [Thirty-Six views of Mount Fuji] will enable you to get closer to Hokusai’s beauty and genius.” * creativeboom.com *

Getty Trust Publications Sam Francis - The Artist's Materials

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAmerican artist Sam Francis (1923-1994) brought vivid colour and emotional intensity to Abstract Expressionism. He was described as the "most sensuous and sensitive painter of his generation" by former Guggenheim Museum director James Johnson Sweeney, and curator Howard Fox called him "one of the acknowledged masters of late-modern art." Francis's works, whether intimate or monumental in scale, make indelible impressions; the intention of the artist was to make them felt as much as seen. At the age of twenty, Francis was hospitalised for spinal tuberculosis and spent three years virtually immobilised in a body cast. For physical therapy he was given a set of watercolours, and, as he described it, he painted his way back to life. The exuberant colour and expression in his paintings celebrated his survival; his five-decade career was an energetic visual and theoretical exploration that took him around the world. Francis' idiosyncratic painting practices have long been the subject of speculation and debate among conservators and art historians. Presented here for the first time in this volume are the results of an in-depth scientific study of more than forty paintings from the late 1940s to early 1990s, which reveal new discoveries about his creative process, inventive techniques, and specially formulated paints and binders. The data provides a key to the complicated evolution of the artist's work and informs original art historical interpretations.

Book SynopsisHow the influential American art historian used his print collection to theorize body language and the concept of the copy Beginning in the early 1960s, with only the meager budget of a part-time art history professor, Leo Steinberg (1920–2011) amassed a collection of more than 3,500 prints spanning the medium’s 500-year history in the West. Steinberg’s prints formed a visual library that shaped his scholarship in fundamental ways. His collection, incorporating the work of artists both famous and obscure, illuminates his claim that before photography, prints functioned as the "circulating lifeblood of ideas," disseminating figures and styles across boundaries. Through close observation of his prints, Steinberg developed some of his most innovative arguments about the instructive richness of the copy and the expressive potential of body language. This lavishly illustrated volume examines the development of Steinberg’s remarkable collection and its role in his scholarship. It also serves as an introduction to the history of Western printmaking that these works broadly encompass.

Book SynopsisJapanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) was one of the most influential artists working in the genre of ukiyo-e, `pictures of the floating world', in late eighteenth-century Japan, and was widely appreciated for his prints of beautiful women. In this book, Julie Nelson Davis draws on a wide range of period sources, makes a close study of selected print sets and reinterprets Utamaro in the context of his times. Offering a new approach to issues of the status of the artist and the construction of gender, identity, sexuality and celebrity in the Edo period, and now in an updated edition containing a new preface and many new images, this book is a significant contribution to the field, and will be a key work for readers interested in Japanese arts and cultures.Trade Review"By offering [a] new approach to the constructions of identity, to the roles of gender, sexuality and celebrity in the Edo period, Davis here makes a significant contribution to the field in showing us the constructed nature of the spectacle of beauty . . . her publishers have done her proud. Reaktion Books are always beautifully designed and this one, with its full-color illustrations from all the Utamaro series, its art paper and its elegant binding is one of the best."-- "Japan Times, on the previous edition" "Handsomely produced and copiously illustrated. . . . Davis has written a book that skillfully synthesizes a broad range of historical, cultural and artistic data that underscore the degree to which the conventional understanding of the floating world artist is an illusion constructed with the collusion of the viewer. General reader and scholars alike will appreciate her careful analyses of the multi-layered visual and verbal meanings of Utamaro's most familiar print series."-- "Print Quarterly, on the previous edition" "This beautifully illustrated volume presents an engaging argument which will be of interest to a readership with prior knowledge of Edo art history."-- "Art Book, on the previous edition" "Davis provides a succinct and credible overview of Utamaro's career, one devoid of the romanticized drama found in most treatments of this artist . . . Drawing on the research of Edo culture specialists, Davis treats the reader to a series of interesting and informative essays on such topics as the publishing industry, the Tenmei-era gesaku community, the history of the Yoshiwara and its protocols, the pseudoscience of physiognomy, and the Kansei reforms."-- "Monumenta Nipponica, on the previous edition" "Utamaro and the Spectacle of Beauty makes a significant contribution to the field of ukiyo-e studies by aptly showing that past readings of Utamaro as one au fait with the life of women has limited our understanding of the complexity of social factors that led to such a construct. By approaching her reading of the Utamaro style as the concept of a publishing industry geared to catering to the needs of the market, Davis opens up a broader reading of his work that reveals much about cultural and societal attitudes, particularly those related to the perception of women in the male-dominated Edo society."-- "Japanese Studies, on the previous edition"Table of ContentsIntroduction: Utamaro, Ukiyo-e and the City of Prints 1 Constructing the Artist Known as Utamaro 2 `Pictures of Beauties' and Other Social Physiognomies 3 Behind the Brocade and Other Yoshiwara Illusions 4 Utamaro and the Feminine Spectacle 5 Making History into the Pageant of the Floating World References Works Cited Acknowledgements List of Illustrations Index

Book SynopsisThe artist Angie Lewin has a unique vision of the natural world. Her hugely popular prints depict in intricate detail the native flora of a variety of environments, from salt marsh and Highland loch, to flower-strewn meadow and wild garden. Lewin finds beauty in each landscape, whatever the season, and is particularly inspired by plant forms: slender reeds, stately goatsbeard, spiky teasels and sculptural seed heads. 'Plants and Places' presents over 70 of Lewin's beautifully crafted linocuts and wood engravings. The works are grouped according to habitat such as coast, woodland and hedgerow, and garden together with drawings, paintings and collages from Lewin's sketchbooks of grasses, seed pods, seaweed, shells and other objects that she has collected on her walks. In an engaging introduction, Leslie Geddes-Brown meets Lewin in her studio, discusses her artistic inspirations and her fascination with plants, and describes how she creates her prints.Trade Review'Beautifully crafted linocuts and wood engravings' - Home & Interiors Scotland 'A delight for gardeners and nature lovers' - Elle Decoration 'Irresistibly wonderful prints from Angie Lewin' - Gardens Illustrated 'A beautifully illustrated book' - The Lady '... there is something enchanting about Lewin"s work... it is neither faithful reproduction nor whimsical reinterpretation, but homage to the intricate details of nature, once removed from realistic images' - nonsuchbook.typepad.com 'A delight for gardeners and nature lovers' - Elle Decoration 'Irresistibly wonderful prints from Angie Lewin' - Gardens IllustratedTable of ContentsIntroduction Coast Woodland and Hedgerow River and Loch Meadow and Garden Studio List of Works
