Book SynopsisThis book draws extensively on the little-known but important Suffragette Fellowship Collection of archive photographs, newspapers, personal correspondence, artefacts and memoirs, to present a vivid picture of Suffragette life. The strength of the book is its rare images of the Suffragette campaign leading to the outbreak of the First World War. The book also documents leading personalities in the Suffragette movement, such as Emmeline Pankhurst, Annie Kenney and Emily Wilding Davison, the behind-the-scenes activities at the Women's Social and Political Union, their public propaganda work, the brilliant set-piece demonstrations and the escalation of militancy from pestering the politicians' to burning down buildings and attacking works of art. The book also explores what happened to these incredible women after their war was won and the vote was granted to them.

Book SynopsisAs identified by Bloomberg Government, the best-performing federal contractors all lobby Congress. We might guess that intuitively. The common perception of Washington, DC, as an insider''s game, persists, and it makes sense that the winners lobby. However, focusing only on best-performing contractors limits the view of what unfolds through congressional lobbying or, more importantly, could unfold for even more companiesif they only recognized that they also have access to Congress. The tools of congressional influence are available to every company, yet the overwhelming majority of federal contractors eschew the opportunity to lobby Congress. Sadly, it's not just that companies often don't know how. • Taylor & Francis Politics by Any Other Name

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book critiques a modern American political system characterized by the partisan weaponization of bureaucratic systems and institutions. Competition for political power in the United States today is not just about winning elections. Competing political forces attempt to win at the polls but they do not bet all their chips on electoral outcomes. Each party has built an institutional bastion within portions of the federal bureaucracy. Each party makes use of judicial and criminal proceedings for partisan purposesâa practice dubbed âœlawfareâ by the national media. And, acting through various surrogates, each party sponsors âœviolence by proxy,â to achieve its ends. To the extent that political struggles are fought outside the electoral arena, ordinary Americans have little or no voice in public affairs. And, unfortunately, in the U.S. today, a good deal of political struggle takes place outside the electoral arena. This book will be used in undergraduate and graduate classes in political parties, electoral politics and in general American government classes.

Book SynopsisAt the turn of the twenty-first century, a tide of nonviolent youth movements swept across Eastern Europe. Young people demanded political change in repressive political regimes that emerged since the collapse of communism. The Serbian social movement Otpor (Resistance) played a vital role in bringing down Slobodan Milosevic in 2000. Inspired by Otpor''s example, similar challenger organizations were formed in Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, and Ukraine. The youth movements, however, differed in the extent to which they could mobilize citizens against the authoritarian governments on the eve of national elections. This book argues that the movement''s tactics and state countermoves explain, in no small degree, divergent social movement outcomes. Using data from semi-structured interviews with former movement participants, public opinion polls, government publications, non-governmental organization (NGO) reports, and newspaper articles, the book traces state-movement interactions in five Trade Review'This work provides a refreshing approach to these electoral revolutions, foregrounding the agency of youth activists and incumbents … this is a well-rounded, thoughtful study of youth movements in the region, and its key take away is to highlight the creativity and skill needed to 'outwit' a government and engage ordinary citizens in mobilization.' Book SynopsisLong-term social and demographic changes - and the conflicts they create - continue to transform British politics. In this accessible and authoritative book Sobolewska and Ford show how deep the roots of this polarisation and volatility run, drawing out decades of educational expansion and rising ethnic diversity as key drivers in the emergence of new divides within the British electorate over immigration, identity and diversity. They argue that choices made by political parties from the New Labour era onwards have mobilised these divisions into politics, first through conflicts over immigration, then through conflicts over the European Union, culminating in the 2016 EU referendum. Providing a comprehensive and far-reaching view of a country in turmoil, Brexitland explains how and why this happened, for students, researchers, and anyone who wants to better understand the remarkable political times in which we live.Trade Review'Whether we like it or not, we are all living in Brexitland. In forensic detail, Sobolewska and Ford plot the long road of social change which led us here. En route, they look ahead to where the UK's explosive culture wars could take us next. Essential reading for those not wearing blinkers.' Adam Boulton, Sky News'Maria Sobolewska and Robert Ford have produced the best account I have read of our cultural civil wars. The work is not just an explanation of the way we live now, but of how we reached a state of institutionalised rage and why peace will be so hard to find.' Nick Cohen, The Spectator and The Observer'Brexitland brilliantly unpicks the old and new forces that shaped our brittle political age. Who is exploiting the anger? And is it with us for good? A fascinating and convincing study: essential reading for anyone wanting to understand why tolerance of the other side in British politics seems to have disappeared. How did our political battleground turn so ugly and intolerant? Brexitland delves deep into decades of history and attitudes to race and ethnic identity to answer that question, and does it with style. Sobolewska and Ford have written the new political bible of our times: how did we stop debating and start shouting? Can normal service resume? Brexitland is a razor-sharp and compelling answer to those questions.' Gary Gibbon, Channel 4 News'A brilliant, original, powerful book. For Remainers, Brexiters or indeed anyone interested in why divided Britain cut itself adrift from the EU, this is unmissable. It is also totally riveting.' Book SynopsisOver the last few decades, we have witnessed increasing incidents of collective action. Collective action is a matter of demand by citizens who are aggrieved, supply by protest organizations/individuals, and mobilization through effective communication networks. This volume elaborates on the processes and mechanisms responsible for these dynamics.Trade Review'A Social Psychology of Protest: Individuals in Action examines the critical question of why some people protest while others (who are often equally sympathetic) do not. Employing the authors' signature individual-level focus, this book is the modern definitive statement on how we can understand the dynamics of 'contextual contestation' through examining how individuals perceive and interpret their structural conditions and move from sympathy to action. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Pussy Riot

Book SynopsisBoth more and less than a band, Pussy Riot is continually misunderstood by the Western media. This book sets the record straight. After their scandalous performance of an anti-Putin protest song in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior and the imprisonment of two of its members, the punk feminist art collective known as Pussy Riot became an international phenomenon. But, what, exactly, is Pussy Riot, and what are they trying to achieve? The award-winning author Eliot Borenstein explores the movement's explosive history and takes you beyond the hype.Trade ReviewIn just over a hundred sparkling and witty pages, [Borenstein] takes readers inside the remarkable evolution of Pussy Riot... Along the way, Pussy Riot offers crisp insights into Russian feminism, performance art in the media age and the problem of anonymity in a world in thrall to celebrity. * Times Literary Supplement *This is recommended reading for anyone interested in history, feminism, politics and art movements. * Europe-Asia Studies *Eliot Borenstein takes readers trough the fascinating discussion triggered by the Pussy Riot in and after their famous ‘punk prayer’. Does contemporary protest have to be spectacular? What happens when protesters become celebrities? How feminist Pussy Riot eventually are? And what lessons can we learn from ‘speaking punk to power’? A must read for everyone interested in art and politics. * Ivan Gololobov, Lecturer in Politics and Russian Studies, University of Bath, UK *Eliot Borenstein succinctly explains what made Pussy Riot a global phenomenon. He uncovers the complex context of the affair which builds off the interplay between political protest, prank and parody, language taboos, post-modernist art activism, performance, dissidence, punk, the subversive politics of the female body, religion, and church. * Elena Gapova Professor of Sociology, Western Michigan University, USA *Borenstein shows the need to understand Pussy Riot not just as activists, but transgressive actionists, who played with meaning, context, and syntax to say no to the Putin regime's authoritarian performance. Unmasking the layers of meaning, the book takes the analysis through their improvisational, multivocal, and sometimes problematic transformation and ends with its own radical claim that Masha and Nadya continue to speak punk to power. * Janet Elise Johnson, Professor of Political Science, Brooklyn College CUNY, USA *Unlike other accounts that have tried to unmask Pussy Riot, Eliot Borenstein sets a radically different agenda. Comfortable with the complexities and inconsistencies of the Pussy Riot phenomenon, he evaluates what it takes to fight the oppressive political regime in Russia. Borenstein’s unique blend of wit, compassion and critical analysis makes this a highly engaging and enjoyable read. * Marina Yusupova, Postdoctoral Researcher, Newcastle University, UK *Table of ContentsList of Images Introduction: Foolish Inconsistency 1. These events have been an important part of the battle to combat racism, authoritarianism, and xenophobia in Trump's America. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone invested in the fight for social justice. Welch highlights examples of social justice work accomplished at the institutional level. In her groundbreaking book, Caroline Heldman emphasizes that consumer activism is a democratizing force that improves political participation, self-governance, and the accountability of corporations and the government. She also investigates the use of these tactics by conservatives.Heldman analyzes the democratic implications of boycotting, socially responsible investing, social media campaigns, and direct consumer actions, highlighting the ways in which such consumer activism serves as a countervailing force against corporate power in politics. • How Elites Ate the Social Justice Movement

Simon & Schuster How Elites Ate the Social Justice Movement

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn eye-opening exploration of American policy reform, or lack thereof, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement and how the country can do better in the future. In 2020, while the Covid-19 pandemic raged, the United States was hit by a ripple of political discontent the likes of which had not been seen since the 1960s. The spark was the viral video of the horrific police murder of an unarmed Black man in Minneapolis. The killing of George Floyd galvanized a nation already reeling from Covid and a toxic political cycle. Tens of thousands poured into the streets to protest. Major corporations and large nonprofit groups—institutions that are usually resolutely apolitical—raced to join in. The fervor for racial justice intersected with the already simmering demands for change from the #MeToo movement and for economic justice from Gen Z. The entire country suddenly seemed to be roaring for change in one voice. Then nothing much happened. In How Elites Ate the Social Justice Movement, Fredrik deBoer explores why these passionate movements failed and how they could succeed in the future. In the digital age, social movements flare up but then lose steam through a lack of tangible goals, the inherent moderating effects of our established institutions and political parties, and the lack of any real grassroots movement in contemporary America. Hidden beneath the rhetoric of the oppressed and the symbolism of the downtrodden lies the inconvenient fact that those doing the organizing, messaging, protesting, and campaigning are predominantly drawn from this country’s more upwardly mobile educated classes. Poses are more important than policies. DeBoer lays out an alternative vision for how society’s winners can contribute to social justice movements without taking them over, and how activists and their organizations can become more resistant to the influence of elites, nonprofits, corporations, and political parties. Only by organizing around class rather than empty gestures can we begin the hard work of changing minds and driving policy.Trade Review“This is strong stuff.” —Sam Tanenhaus, The New York Times Book Review“[O]ne of the sharpest and funniest writers on the internet. I don’t agree with everything he says, but he’s always thoughtful and he pushes me to think. I hope his new book, How Elites Ate the Social Justice Movement, will be read especially by those on the left, because the left is where his heart lies and the failings of the left seem to break his heart most.” —Pamela Paul, The New York Times“DeBoer’s writing can be withering, as the best polemics often are, and few people will agree with all of his arguments. Book SynopsisThe Levellers, formed out of the explosive tumult of the 1640s and the battlefields of the Civil War, are central figures in the history of democracy. In this thrilling narrative, John Rees brings to life the men-including John Lilburne, Richard Overton and Thomas Rainsborough-and women who ensured victory and became an inspiration to republicans of many nations. From the raucous streets of London and the clattering printers' workshops that stoked the uprising, to the rank and file of the New Model Army and the furious Putney debates where the Levellers argued with Oliver Cromwell for the future of English democracy, this story reasserts the revolutionary nature of the 1642-51 wars and the role of ordinary people in this pivotal moment in history. In particular Rees places the Levellers at the centre of the debates of 1647 when the nation was gripped by the question of what to do with the defeated Charles I. Without the Levellers and Agitators' fortitude and well-organised opposition history may have avoided the regicide and missed its revolutionary moment. The legacy of the Levellers can be seen in the modern struggles for freedom and democracy across the world.Trade ReviewA profound and scholarly account of the Levellers . . .The book combines the military-political history of the English revolution with an account of the social and ideological struggles that produced, out of the backstreets of 17th-century London, one of modernity's first revolutionary social movements -- Paul Mason * Guardian Books of the Year 2016 *Rees likes his subjects, as should anyone who values democracy and social justice. Book SynopsisThis book examines how asbestos activists living in remote rural villages in South Africa activated metropolitan resources of representation at the grassroots level in a quest for justice and restitution for the catastrophic effects on their lives caused by the asbestos industry. It follows the Asbestos Interest Group (AIG) over a fifteen-year period through its involvement in grassroots research, in legal cases and in the compensation systems for asbestos-related disease. It examines how the AIG became grassroots technicians of translocal paperwork, moving texts back and forth between periphery and center, pushing documents through the textual mazeways of the courts, medical institutions, the compensation system and various government agencies. The book addresses rhetorical mobility and the extent to which, given the AIG’s position on the periphery, it has been able to enter the voices and interests of villagers into formerly inaccessible forums of deliberation and decision-making.Trade ReviewTrimbur demonstrates the transformative power of grassroots literacy in mobilizing the poor and resisting big industries. He merges activism with analytical rigor – adopting a creative style layered with the personal, narrative, and theoretically nuanced – to leave us with a text that will inspire us for similar forms of political engagement and academic relevance. * Suresh Canagarajah, Pennsylvania State University, USA *This is a richly detailed and illuminating study of asbestos activism in South Africa. The author’s commanding approach helps us see that justice is served, and denied, not only by control over knowledge but also by control over the modalities of participation in knowledge production and the uneven status, distribution, exchange, and circulation of these between and among periphery and metropolis. * Bruce Horner, University of Louisville, USA *This innovative book provides a fascinating textual history of asbestos activism and the struggles of invisible people to be counted as legitimate citizens in the aftermath of apartheid. Trimbur provides a powerful analysis of the struggles to connect grassroots literacy to the written record, arguing for the centrality of participation in this process. * Carolyn McKinney, University of Cape Town, South Africa *At a moment when the advances of the post-apartheid era have been called into question as never before, John Trimbur’s textual history of the asbestos activists of the Northern Cape serves as a timely reminder not only of even darker times but also of collective struggles that did have positive social and economic effects. Paying meticulous attention to the widest range of textual and extra-textual sources, Grassroots Literacy and the Written Record examines how South Africa’s highly profitable asbestos-mining industry devastated the lives of miners and their communities in the Northern Cape and how those miners and communities fought successfully for compensation. -- David Johnson, The Open University, UK * Journal of Southern African Studies, 2022 *Table of ContentsIntroduction: Circumstances, Motives, Methods, and Theories Chapter 1. Book Synopsis Well before the far-right resurgence that has most recently transformed European politics, Austria’s 1999 parliamentary elections surprised the world with the unexpected success of the Freedom Party of Austria and its charismatic leader, Jörg Haider. The party’s perceived xenophobia, isolationism, and unabashed nationalism in turn inspired a massive protest movement that expressed opposition not only through street protests but also in novels, plays, films, and music. Through careful readings of this varied cultural output, The Art of Resistance traces the aesthetic styles and strategies deployed during this time, providing critical context for understanding modern Austrian history as well as the European protest movements of today.Trade Review “This book is remarkable for closing an important gap in Austrian Studies scholarship on contemporary politics and specifically the cultural responses and resistance to far-right wing governments in Austria… a must-read for all scholars who seek a better understanding of cultural resistance to extreme right-wing movements in early twenty-first-century Austria.” • Journal of Austrian Studies “Fiddler’s book stands out for the range of works in different media that she discusses. These include acts of everyday protest (demonstrations, speeches, graffiti, dance, etc.), as well as literary texts, films, and dramas… An excellently researched and well-written study, The Art of Resistance will prove an invaluable resource for scholars interested in cultural protest against the far right not just in Austria but around the world.” • Modern Language Review “It is a fascinating book that demonstrates the extent to which the distinction between culture and politics has become blurred—in Austria as elsewhere… Allyson Fiddler’s book helps us to understand the complexity of factors behind the new culture of protest.” • Austrian History Yearbook “…a [groundbreaking], lucidly written, meticulously researched magnum opus surveying Austria’s, but above all Vienna’s, culture of dissent at the turn of the millennium. The passionate archivist Fiddler expertly disentangles the complexities behind protest art in a country once dubbed Insel der Seligen.” • Austrian Studies “The Art of Resistance is a comprehensive, vigorously written treatment of a topic that transcends Austrian Studies. It is clearly the product of extensive research and an intimate familiarity with the subject matter.” • Geoffrey C. 1 in stock

Book Synopsis Across the West, the explosion of social movement activity since the late 1960s has constituted a “participatory revolution” that has posed profound challenges for formal political parties. Through an analysis of new interviews, institutional documents, and a host of other largely unexploited sources, Daniela R. Piccio provides a rich and empirically grounded exploration of the wide-ranging responses to these movements. Focusing on Italy and the Netherlands since the 1970s, Party Responses to Social Movements demonstrates how political parties have incorporated the demands of movements to a surprising extent, even as both have grappled with fundamental and inevitable tensions between their respective roles and aims.Trade Review “The book is clear, well written, and well documented, and deals with an innovative and rather understudied topic…[It] is without a doubt an excellent work, one that significantly contributes to our knowledge of both parties and movements, and their relationships. It is highly recommended reading for graduate students and researchers from various disciplines and especially those working on social movements’ impact on the political process. Besides this, it will be also a model for other studies on different cases and it will help to develop further comparative analysis.” • Análise Social “Piccio’s work is a fine empirical study that will fill an important gap in the scholarly literature on parties and movements. It is clearly written, very well-organized, and is designed in a way that generates stimulating and suggestive comparisons.” • John Markoff, University of Pittsburgh “A pleasant and interesting read with a well-thought out design. Party Responses to Social Movements is an accessible and interesting read on an understudied topic. It is well-conceived and its approach to its subject matter is both careful and convincing.” • Bert Klandermans, Vrije Universiteit AmsterdamTable of Contents List of Tables and Figures Acknowledgements List of Abbreviations Introduction Chapter 1. Book Synopsis‘Defying Vichy takes us into the heart of the French Resistance: the Dordogne region (in) this moving account of the darkest and brightest period in French history.’ – Matthew Cobb, author of The ResistanceVichy France under Marshal Pétain was an authoritarian regime that sought to perpetuate a powerful place for France in the world alongside Germany. It echoed the right-wing ideals of other fascist states and was a perfect instrument for Hitler, who drew more and more power and resources from a beaten France whose people suffered. Resistance was an unknown until a small number sought to make a stand in whatever way they could. Each would play their part in destabilising the Vichy state, all the while rejecting the Nazi occupation of their eternal France. The Dordogne was one of many hotbeds of early refusal and its dramatic stories are here told against the backdrop of the rise and fall of Vichy France. These stories, like so many others of often ordinary people – men and women, young and old – tell of a period of betrayal, refusal and heroism.Trade Review'Pacey and engaging ... a fascinating contribution to the field.' -- Robert Gildea'A meticulously researched and valuable contribution to the history of the German occupation.' -- Caroline Moorehead"A vivid and evocative account ... • Charged: How the Police Try to Suppress Protest

Verso Books Charged: How the Police Try to Suppress Protest

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCharged is an essential investigation into the role of policing protest in Britain today. As the UK government tries to suppress all forms of dissent, in their pursuit of more control, how do the police manage crowds, provoke violence and even break the law?Since the 1980s under successive governments the police have been allowed to suppress protests, using aggressive tactics - from batons to horse charges to kettling. The landscape of how police deal with protest changed following criticism of the police during the 1981 Brixton riots. New military-style tactics were sanctioned by the Thatcher government, in secret. Over the next forty years those protesting against racism, unfair job losses, draconian laws, or for environmental protection were subject to brutal tactics. In the aftermath, media attention denigrates protesters while the police are praised and continue to act with impunity.Looking through these moments of conflict widens our understanding of policing public order to reveal the true character of the state. Since the 1980s successive governments, from Thatcher to Johnson, covertly plot to suppress protests, using standardised aggressive tactics - from batons to horse charges to kettling. Through undisclosed documents and eyewitness accounts the authors reveal organised police violence against miners at Orgreave, print workers at Warrington, anti poll tax campaigners, student protestors and Black Lives Matter. The voices of protesters however have been undeterred.Trade ReviewBrilliantly readable, it carries you with it every step of the way. One forgets how frightening authority is and the detail on police behaviour is dreadfully shocking and distressing. It never assumes what you might believe or what you might already know and at the end leaves the reader in no doubt as to what has happened in this country. -- Emma Thompson, actor and activistMatt Foot and Morag Livingstone have carefully documented the organised violence and secret police tactics used to attack trade unionists and others who have exercised their right to protest in Britain since the early 1980s. They uncover the way that successive Home secretaries and chief police officers have covertly worked together, deploying and legalising draconian tactics to defend vested interests from active legitimate dissent. If you want to know the dark history that has led us to the current police bill and to understand how the powers it contains would be used, I recommend that you read this book. -- Sharon Graham, Unite the union general secretaryMeticulously details violent state suppression in the protection of capital; backed by a propaganda machine. Exposed is the unofficial but permanent government with sharp attention to every detail. This is a story of how justice has been repeatedly stolen in this ruthless war against the right to protest. Read every word because you are holding history in your hands. Our history -- LowkeyFoot and Livingstone have done a magnificent job of intertwining analysis of the legal system with history, showing us how the thing we call 'the law' morphs with what those in charge of the justice system want it to do. This is a great piece of bottom-up history because the authors write in sympathy and solidarity about what it's been like in recent times to be a protestor on the receiving end of these changes -- Michael RosenFoot and Livingstone show without a shadow of doubt that the suppression of protest over the past 40 years is essentially a strategic choice made by the elite in the neoliberal era. -- Adrian Weir * Morning Star *When you read Charged, you will see ours is one of many struggles, past and present. -- Chris Peace * Tribune *An important study of how history influences the present. -- Kirsty Brimelow QC * The Times *Timely and important. -- Chris Nineham * Counterfire *Table of ContentsForeword: Michael Mansfield QC Introduction: Secrets and LiesPART 1: Maggie Thatcher's Bootboys 1. • Iconomy: Towards a Political Economy of Images

Anthem Press Iconomy: Towards a Political Economy of Images

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIconomy: Towards a Political Economy of Images argues that imagery of all kinds has become a definitive force in the shaping of contemporary life. While immersed in public politics and private imaginaries, such imagery also operates according to its own logic, potentialities, and limitations. This book explores viral imagery—the iconopolitics—of the pandemic, U.S. Presidents Trump and Biden, Black Lives Matter, as well as the rise of a “black aesthetic” in white artworlds. Having arrived at the term “iconomy” in the years just prior to 9/11, and tracking its growing relevance since then, Smith argues that its study does not require a discipline serving nation states and globalizing capitalism but, instead, a deconstructive interdiscipline that contributes to the politics of planetary world-making. Trade Review“A well documented and welcome history of the genesis of a new concept: iconomy.” – Peter Szendy, David Herlihy University Professor of Comparative Literature and the Humanities, Brown University, and author of The Supermarket of Images.“Charting the image economy’s historical and current coordinates with model perspicuity, Smith reveals timely political insights.” – T. J. Demos, Patricia and Rowland Rebele Endowed Chair in Art History, UC Santa Cruz, and author of Beyond the World’s End: Arts of Living at the Crossing. “Unparalleled historian and theoretician of the visual articulations of contemporaneity, Terry Smith provides an erudite and highly useful conceptual framework and historical background for understanding and criticizing the economies that images inescapably form part of in today's cultures. Iconomy is a must-read for anyone who wants to engage critically with contemporary regimes of imagery.” – Jacob Lund, Associate Professor, Aesthetics and Culture, Aarhus University, author of The Changing Constitution of the Present.“Iconomy gathers forceful evidence that images are indeed capital today. In Post-Fordist societies, as Terry Smith makes clear in this important book, the exposure value of images inaugurates a new political economy we are still struggling to understand : an eye-conomy” – Professor Emmanuel Alloa, University of Freiburg, Faculty of Philosophy, Fribourg.Smith's Iconomy is unabashedly about the present: it tracks the author's shifting perception about the political role of circulating images in contemporary society over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, the Donald Trump presidency, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Part 1, comprising six brief, roughly chronological chapters, delves into the history, theory, and politics of the image as a form of social currency, surveying ideas proffered by thinkers such as Plato; the iconodules and iconoclasts of Byzantium; and Marx, Benjamin, and Debord. Weighing the value of an amorphous definition of iconomy—a coinage created by theoreticians and marketers alike in recent decades—Smith (Univ. of Pittsburgh) acknowledges that the term is indicative of the essential unknowability and immeasurability of the digital world. The eight chapters in part 2 depart from a genealogy of the image to address the power of digital and video images in the contemporary world. In grappling with the role of image regimes in the wake of the pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, the January 6th Capitol riots, and "Trumpmania," Smith shifts toward an activist methodology. Though new media concepts such as AI, memes, and NFTs are not discussed in depth, the book's juxtaposition of aesthetic theory with critical perspectives on contemporaneity is refreshing —A. Book SynopsisMarcus Garvey, Claude McKay, Claudia Jones, C.L.R. James, Stokely Carmichael, Louis Farakhan-the roster of immigrants from the Caribbean who have made a profound impact on the development of radical politics in the United States is extensive. In this magisterial and lavishly illustrated work, Winston James focuses on the twentieth century's first waves of immigrants from the Caribbean and their contribution to political dissidence in America.Examining the way in which the characteristics of the societies they left shaped their perceptions of the land to which they traveled, Winston James draws sharp differences between Hispanic, Anglophone, and other non-Hispanic arrivals. He explores the interconnections between the Cuban independence struggle, Puerto Rican nationalism, Afro-American feminism, and black communism in the first turbulent decades of the twentieth century. He also provides fascinating insights into the peculiarities of Puerto Rican radicalism's impact in New York City and recounts the remarkable story of Afro-Cuban radicalism in Florida. Virgin Islander Hubert Harrison, whom A. Philip Randolph dubbed 'the father of Harlem radicalism', is rescued from the historical shadows by James's analysis of his pioneering contribution to Afro-America's radical tradition. In addition to a subtle re-examination of Garvey's Universal Negro Movement Association-including the exertions and contributions of its female members-James provides the most detailed exploration so far undertaken of Cyril Briggs and his little-known but important African Blood Brotherhood. This diligently researched, wide ranging and sophisticated book will be welcomed by all those interested in the Caribbean and its émigrés, the Afro-American current within America's radical tradition, and the history, politics, and culture of the African diaspora.Trade ReviewSuperbly written, full of well-digested and considered detail, it is a historic chronicle. -- Edward SaidA brilliant, nuanced and sensitive re-examination of the history of Caribbean radicals and radicalism in the United States. Between 1987 and 1999 a new project in activism had emerged unshackled from past ghosts. Through innovative use of civil rights' era non-violent disobedience, guerrilla theatre, and sophisticated media work, ACT UP has helped transform the world of activism. This anthology offers a history of ACT UP for a new generation of activists and students. It is divided into five sections which address the new social movements, the use of street theater to reclaim public space, queer and sexual politics, new media/electronic civil disobedience, and race and community building. Book SynopsisA dazzling and infuriating portrait of fifty years of corporate influence in Washington, The Wolves of K Street is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction—irresistibly dramatic, spectacularly timely, explosive in its revelations, and absolutely impossible to put down.In the 1970s, Washington’s center of power began to shift away from elected officials in big marble buildings to a handful of savvy, handsomely paid operators who didn’t answer to any fixed constituency. The cigar-chomping son of an influential congressman, an illustrious political fixer with a weakness for modern art, a Watergate-era dirty trickster, the city’s favorite cocktail party host—these were the sort of men who now ran Washington. Over four decades, they’d chart new ways to turn their clients’ cash into political leverage, abandoning favor-trading in smoke-filled rooms for increasingly sophisticated tactics, such as “shadow lobbyi

  • Morbid Symptoms Relapse in the Arab Uprising

Saqi Books Morbid Symptoms Relapse in the Arab Uprising

Book SynopsisSince the first wave of uprisings in 2011, the euphoria of the Arab Spring has given way to the gloom of backlash and a descent into mayhem and war. The revolution has been overwhelmed by clashes between rival counter-revolutionary forces: resilient old regimes on the one hand and Islamic fundamentalist contenders on the other. In this eagerly awaited book, foremost Middle East and international affairs specialist Gilbert Achcar analyzes the factors of the regional relapse. Focusing on Syria and Egypt, Achcar assesses the present stage of the uprising and the main obstacles, both regional and international, that prevent any resolution. In Syria, the regime''s brutality has fostered the rise of jihadist forces, among which the so-called Islamic State emerged as the most ruthless and powerful. In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood''s year in power was ultimately terminated by the contradictory conjunction of a second revolutionary wave and a bloody reactionary coup. Book SynopsisNewcastle’s most notorious riot lives on in the lyrics of Cold Chisel’s 1980 song Star Hotel, grainy YouTube videos and Novocastrian mythology. But beneath thecompelling images of surging crowds, hurled beer cans and flaming police cars was a radical intent that has been all but forgotten …The Star Hotel in Newcastle has become a site of defiance for the marginalised young and dispossessed working class. To understand the whole story of the Star Hotel riot, it should be seen alongside other moments of resistance, Newcastle-style, such as the 1890 Maritime Strike, the Rothbury miners’ lockout in 1929 and the recent battle for the Laman Street fig trees. Radical Newcastle brings together short essays from academics, local historians, journalists and present-day radicals to document the region’s radical past.

  • Who is Charlie?: Xenophobia and the New Middle

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Who is Charlie?: Xenophobia and the New Middle

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the wake of the attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris on 7 January 2015, millions took to the streets to demonstrate their revulsion, expressing a desire to reaffirm the ideals of the French Republic: liberté, égalité, fraternité. But who were the millions of demonstrators who were suddenly united under the single cry of ‘Je suis Charlie’?In this probing new book, Emmanuel Todd investigates the cartography and sociology of the three to four million who marched in Paris and across France and draws some unsettling conclusions. For while they claimed to support liberal, republican values, the real middle classes who marched on that day of indignant protest also had a quite different programme in mind, one that was far removed from their proclaimed ideal. Their deep values were in fact more reminiscent of the most depressing aspects of France’s national history: conservatism, selfishness, domination and inequality.By identifying the anthropological, religious, economic and political forces that brought France to the edge of the abyss, Todd reveals the real dangers posed to all western societies when the interests of privileged middle classes work against marginalised and immigrant groups. Should we really continue to mistreat young people, force the children of immigrants to live on the outskirts of our cities, consign the poorer classes to the remoter parts of the country, demonise Islam, and allow the growth of an ever more menacing anti-Semitism? While asking uncomfortable questions and offering no easy solutions, Todd points to the difficult and uncertain path that might lead to an accommodation with Islam rather than a deepening and divisive confrontation.Trade Review"Todds highly contrarian analysis of the Charlie movement and his strident tone have drawn widespread criticism. But the very boldness of his claims, backed up by hard data, commands attention. No student of the marches can ignore this deeply unconventional book." Times Literary Supplement"The value of Todds book lies in the persuasive counter-narrative that debunks the Manichean interpretation of events that has thus far prevailed in media and political circles."Times Higher Education"The book offers a deeply reflective analysis of the Charlie Hebdo affair in Paris, and uses it brilliantly to explore and criticise the inner tensions and selective historical amnesia of French society that are taken to be responsible for its current Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. It shows with great insight and wisdom how to deal with these disturbing trends."Bhikhu Parekh, House of Lords"Who Is Charlie? stands out from all that has been written on the two massacres that took place in Paris in January 2015. It is an impressive analysis and a gripping read - I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Emmanuel Todd's concern is not merely to trace the cause of these crimes but to reflect on them as a way of understanding the structural contradictions of contemporary France - a nation that continually invokes its Jacobin legacy (liberty, equality, fraternity) and yet allows that legacy to be undermined. This book is a brilliantly argued polemic and essential reading for understanding Islamophobia as a symptom of neo-Republican France in crisis."Talal Asad, CUNY Graduate Center"Who is Charlie? is an important little book, timely and pertinent, and not just for what it says about France. In all Western societies it is the middle classes who enjoy what globalization has created and it is the middle classes who would keep the dispossessed excluded by means of wage inequality and control of education. At the same time, no longer buttressed by the metaphysics of religion, an anxiety haunts the vacuum of the hollow culture that has replaced Catholicism and Protestantism. Charlie seeks a scapegoat, needs one, and the kind of hysteria that gripped France after the events of 7th January is capable of manifesting itself in countries outside of France."Irish Left Review "Perceptive and chilling"London Review of BooksTable of ContentsPreface to the English editionIntroductionCHAPTER ONE: A religious crisisThe terminal crisis in CatholicismReligious decline and the rise of xenophobiaCatholic France and secular France: 1750-1960The two Frances and equalityFrom the One God to the single currencyFrançois Hollande, the Left, and zombie Catholicism2005: a missed opportunity in class struggle?Difficult atheismCHAPTER TWO: CharlieCharlie: middle class and zombie CatholicsNeo-republicanism1992-2015: from pro-Europeanism to neo-republicanismThe neo-republican reality: the ‘social state’ of the middle classesCharlie is anxiousSecularism versus the LeftCatholicism, Islamophobia and anti-SemitismCHAPTER THREE: When equality failsThe difficulties of secular, egalitarian FranceThe anthropology of a capitalism in crisisThe Europe of inequalityFrance, the Germans and the ArabsGermany and circumcisionThe great pro-European happening of 11 January 2015Russia: an exceptional caseThe mystery of ParisThe memory of placesThe four stages of the crisis CHAPTER IV: The French of the Far RightThe slow march of the National Front towards the centre ground in FranceA perversion of universalismRepublican anti-SemitismLe Pen, Sarkozy and equalityThe Socialist Party and inequality: the concept of objective xenophobiaMélenchon and inequalityThe insignificance of human beings and the violence of ideologies CHAPTER FIVE: The French MuslimsThe disintegration of North African culturesMixed marriages: Jews and MuslimsIdeologues and exogamyThe crushing of young people and the jihad factoryScottish fundamentalismMoving beyond the fear of religionIslam and equalityThe inequality of the sexesThe anti-Semitism of the suburbsConclusionThe real republican pastThe neo-republican presentFuture 1: ConfrontationFuture 2: the return to the Republic: an accommodation with IslamA foreseeable deteriorationThe secret weapon of the republican revival

Book Synopsis'Ukraine is not a brothel!' This was the first cry of rage uttered by Femen during Euro 2012. Bare-breasted and crowned with flowers, perched on their high heels, Femen transform their bodies into instruments of political expression through slogans and drawings flaunted on their skin.Trade Review"Femen and Everyday Sexism are two breakthrough movements to emerge in recent times, and they bring their own distinct 'manifestos' in book form. Both confirm that feminism is no longer a dirty word among twentysomethings but also that the ideology manifests itself differently from their campaigning Second Wave predecessors." The Independent "With Femen, we are dealing with something new ... Its activists are charting a new route for public discourse about women and religion, and making it an unabashedly universal discourse, venturing into realms where they may be hated, and they may yet pay a high price for this. But that they have gotten people talking, even shouting and crying, is undeniable, and it is good; only through debate and discussion, sometimes painful, often unsettling, will we progress." The Atlantic "Femen’s aims are straightforward, broad and radical. A war on patriarchy on three fronts, calling for an end to all religions, dictatorship and the sex industry." • Protesting Jordan: Geographies of Power and

Stanford University Press Protesting Jordan: Geographies of Power and

Book SynopsisA National Endowment for Democracy Notable Book of 2022 Protest has been a key method of political claim-making in Jordan from the late Ottoman period to the present day. More than moments of rupture within normal-time politics, protests have been central to challenging state power, as well as reproducing it—and the spatial dynamics of protests play a central role in the construction of both state and society. With this book, Jillian Schwedler considers how space and geography influence protests and repression, and, in challenging conventional narratives of Hashemite state-making, offers the first in-depth study of rebellion in Jordan. Based on twenty-five years of field research, Protesting Jordan examines protests as they are situated in the built environment, bringing together considerations of networks, spatial imaginaries, space and place-making, and political geographies at local, national, regional, and global scales. Schwedler considers the impact of time and temporality in the lifecycles of individual movements. Through a mixed interpretive methodology, this book illuminates the geographies of power and dissent and the spatial practices of protest and repression, highlighting the political stakes of competing narratives about Jordan's past, present, and future.Trade Review"Protesting Jordan offers readers of Arab politics and contentious politics alike a narrative of how protest shapes how states reproduce their power and, in turn, reshape protest. Jillian Schwedler blends a deep immersion in the Middle East with a firm grasp of contentious politics theory in this thought-provoking book."—Sidney Tarrow, Cornell University"Superbly researched, Protesting Jordan provides a fascinating and groundbreaking alternative history of Jordan. Jillian Schwedler skillfully unpacks and challenges traditional accounts of state-making in Jordan as a top-down process. An essential read for those seeking to better understand Jordan's history and how protests maintain state power."—Janine Clark, University of Toronto"Schwedler has crafted an extraordinarily rich portrait of the creation of Jordan and the fortunes of the Hashemite monarchy through the lens of those who contested its policies, its institutions, and sometimes even its very existence. In doing so, she demonstrates that protest has been a routine part of politics in Jordan since before the modern state was established."—Lisa Anderson, Foreign Affairs"It's not just the best book I've read about Jordan... but also one of the very best political science books I've read this year... Protesting Jordan should be a must read for scholars of the Middle East and of comparative politics more broadly, as well as for analysts, journalists and policymakers trying to understand the country's politics."—Marc Lynch, Abu Aardvark"[Protesting Jordan] gives a detailed and rich account of Jordan's social and political history, showing how repertoires of protest and repression created, transformed, and continue to afect state and society in Jordan. But the book is also written in a way that makes it essential reading for any scholar interested in protests, repression, and state development – not just in Jordan, but indeed anywhere else."—Curtis R. Ryan, APSA MENA Newsletter"Protesting Jordan is an important contribution to the study of protest. It is a cry and demand not only for scholars to carry on the critical work of studying popular struggle to illuminate its social significance but to forge novel approaches to understand the state, its political economy and urban form."—Deen Sharp, APSA MENA Newsletter"Schwedler's work pushes us to think about the effects of social movements above and beyond narrow conceptions of success or failure; the book traces and convincingly demonstrates the myriad ways that regimes learn from protest activity and deploy repressive state power through the construction (or lack thereof) of cities and communities."—Summer Forester, APSA MENA Newsletter"Protesting Jordan is a wonderful read and an ambitious model for writing contentious politics into political history. ... Schwedler is one of our field's great ethnographic writers, and her keen eye for meaningful details and almost-imperceptible shifts in power relations rendered this routine set of protests into powerful grounds for theorizing about the everyday work of contention."—Chantal Berman, APSA MENA Newsletter"Schwedler's approach is consciously interpretive and inductive....[A]nyone interested in interested in the relationship between popular opposition and state formation in Jordan will find a wealth of new empirical material and fresh analysis here."—Laurie A. Brand, Middle East Journal"Schwedler's scholarship shows how and why in-depth local knowledges are important: certainly to better understand local contexts, but also in order to reflect on 'generalist' scholarship and 'broader' theoretical debates."—Andrea Teti, Mediterranean Politics"Throughout the work, Schwedler challenges readers to rethink the politics of modern protests by interrogating their meaning under Jordan's authoritarian power structure. Protests are not static attacks on normality; they are frequent and normal expressions of commonplace struggles. They enable Jordanians to assert claims and challenge their regime's rules, but they also elicit autocratic responses. Protests represent frontiers where state power is exerted and negotiated and where the state itself becomes seen."—Sean L. Yom, Middle East Research and Information ProjectTable of Contents1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisDonald Trump’s campaign and presidency represented a radical departure from political norms that are often classified by media and researchers as ‘populist’. Instead, this book theorizes Trump’s campaign and presidency with reference to Mikhail Bakhtin’s "carnival" – a medieval festival of transgression, ridicule, and renewal. In this book, Lisa Gaufman and Bharath Ganesh provide a closer insight into the Trump Carnival, developing interdisciplinary perspectives on populism, misogyny, misinformation, and far-right vernacular culture. Building on the idea of the carnivalesque, this book focuses on the laughing culture of the Trump campaigns and presidency that vilified minorities, disparaged women, and ultimately emboldened the far right. Bringing Bakhtin into dialogue with key developments in contemporary politics, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in the Trump phenomenon, American politics, and populism.
