Scribe Publications City on Fire: the fight for Hong Kong
Book SynopsisA long-term resident and expert observer of dissent in Hong Kong takes readers to the frontlines of Hong Kong’s revolution. Through the long, hot summer of 2019, Hong Kong burned. Anti-government protests, sparked by a government proposal to introduce a controversial extradition law, grew into a pro-democracy movement that engulfed the city for months. Protesters fought street battles with police, and the unrest brought the People’s Liberation Army to the doorstep of Hong Kong. Driven primarily by youth protesters with their ‘Be water!’ philosophy, borrowed from hometown hero Bruce Lee, this leaderless, technology-driven protest movement defied a global superpower and changed Hong Kong, perhaps forever. In City on Fire, Antony Dapiran provides the first detailed analysis of the protests, and reveals the protesters’ unique tactics. He explains how the movement fits into the city’s long history of dissent, examines the cultural aspects of the movement, and looks at what the protests will mean for the future of Hong Kong, China, and China’s place in the world. City on Fire will be seen as the definitive account of an historic upheaval.Trade Review‘Antony Dapiran’s City on Fire combines relentless on-the-ground reporting with a deep understanding of the city’s political, economic and social undercurrents … Dapiran’s style is energetic and vivid, transporting the reader to the middle of a riot police baton charge or a panicked, tear-gassed crowd capturing the broad community support and new-found solidarity of the movement in a city that had a reputation for being cold and distant.’ -- Sue-Lin Wong * Financial Times *‘Ground-level reportage and erudite analysis.’ -- Isabel Hilton * TLS *‘Illuminates every phase, trigger and turning point, skirmish and tactic in what became ‘a fight for the very soul of the city’.’ -- Bron Sibree * South China Morning Post *‘It gives a sense of immediacy and lived experience which is powerful and compelling; there is a rawness to passages of the book, and a sense of the unresolved trauma that last summer marked.’ * Asian Review of Books *‘The events that have rocked Hong Kong over 2019 have bewildered and surprised people inside and outside the city. This is a timely, well-informed attempt to make sense of everything that has happened - critically important in view of the confusion, and contention, that this event has caused.’ -- Professor Kerry Brown, Director, Lau China Institute, King’s College London‘Instructive.’ -- Matthew Partridge * Money Week *‘City on Fire by Antony Dapiran, a lawyer and writer, offers a firsthand analysis and description of one of the 21st century's most significant struggles. China's authoritarian interference in Hong Kong was met by a unique and unprecedented popular uprising. This book provides a clear narrative and frontline perspective of a complex issue. It is the most comprehensive book about the Hong Kong protests from a professional observer.’ -- Ai Weiwei‘Excellent reportage that is of critical importance in understanding contemporary Chinese politics.’ STARRED REVIEW * Kirkus Reviews *‘His scrupulous account looks at the history, the legal dimensions and the likely future for the region under Beijing.’ FIVE STARS -- Robyn Douglass * The Advertiser *‘[A]n engaged and authoritative account of the movement.’ -- Linda Jaivin * Sydney Review of Books *‘Dapiran shows how the protests brought worldwide attention to Hong Kong and civil liberties in an autonomous region. Readers will appreciate how the author places the events of 2019 in the context of earlier episodes in Hong Kong’s history such as the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the 1967 riots. This fascinating read is essential for anyone interested in the current affairs of Hong Kong, specifically, and China, generally.’ STARRED REVIEW * Library Journal *‘City on Fire is Dapiran's follow-up to his earlier book about the Umbrella Movement in 2014. The much-longer sequel is deeply personal, based on riveting first-hand accounts and historical insights on the turmoil that erupted last summer. It is helpful that Dapiran, who is impressively versed in the nuances of Hong Kong's local dialect and culture, was present at both watershed moments.’ * Reuters, BreakingViews *‘[M]agnificent … [A] gifted writer who tells a compelling story of what the protesters have been up against, what they are fighting for, and how their tactics and goals have evolved over time … In addition to his strong descriptive powers, the author shows a keen understanding of human psychology and sociology, which adds another layer of depth to the reader’s understanding of the urgency of the demonstrations.’ * National Review *‘In smooth, heady prose that blends legal scholarship with the romanticism of a battle for independence, Dapiran shows … a city unhinged, on the verge of breakdown.’ * Japan Times *‘City on Fire provides a clear and authoritative account of the unfolding events, well-seated in Hong Kongese history, culture, and politics.’ -- David Ferrell * The Canberra Times *‘Readers interested in Hong Kong’s history and politics and the history of social movements will find this engaging, engrossing book to be crucial in understanding the role of political demonstration in contemporary Hong Kong.’ * Booklist *‘Dapiran goes right to the frontline to capture the unrest that plagued Hong Kong in 2019. He writes with journalistic prowess of what he witnessed among protestors and police, the tension mounting in each chapter.’ -- Will Higginbotham * Australian Book Review *‘In City on Fire, Antony Dapiran gives a rousing account of the protest movement from its beginnings in 2014 to the long showdowns in 2019 … Dapiran takes readers through the streets, alleyways, and subways of the city alongside the black-clad, yellow-hardhat-wearing, gas-masked protesters. He gets inside their skin, signing in to Telegram, an online social network used by the protesters to organise. Because Dapiran is with the crowds, he describes with great verve how the protesters operate without leaders, instead moving ‘like water’ to pop up and then evade the police.’ -- Jane Perlez * Foreign Affairs *‘What sets City on Fire apart most from books on both Beijing’s 1989 and Hong Kong’s 2019 is the unique mix of skills and experiences of its author. To say that Dapiran was well positioned to write City on Fire is the height of understatement — and not just because he did graduate work in Chinese cultural studies and wrote City of Protest. He spent day after day on the streets between June and November of 2019, a constant observer of everything from a vigil-like march by lawyers clad in black on 6 June (held to symbolise the idea that the extradition bill’s implementation would sound the death knell of judicial independence and true rule of law), to clashes months later between frustrated protesters and police itching for confrontation.’ -- Jeffrey Wasserstrom * Mekong Review *‘In his book City on Fire, an eloquent up-close account, Antony Dapiran is as focused on the aesthetics of the protests as on their political meaning. Hong Kong protesters, he observes admiringly, come up with the cleverest puns and make brilliant use of lanterns, candles, laser pointers, and Post-it Notes … He sees in the exceptionally rich protest culture a mash-up of themes from Hollywood action movies, Cantonese pop music, Japanese anime, and classical Chinese mythology.’ -- Barbara Demick * New York Review of Books *‘[A]n extensive narrative of the anti-extradition protests that shook Hong Kong [in 2019] … As it looks for the meaning of the resistance campaign, it goes beyond the simplistic binaries of optimism and pessimism as it ponders the future … one of [2020's] most crucial reads, not just because of its timeliness, but also its analysis of the historical and cultural significance of the act of dissent, which offers ways of thinking about the event in relation to the ongoing development of political awareness in Hong Kong … an urgent record that will sharpen our sensitivity to the past and what to look forward to in the years to come.’ -- Garfield Chow * Cha *

Renard Press Ltd A Letter to a Hindu
Book SynopsisDated the 14th of December 1908, A Letter to a Hindu was a letter written by Leo Tolstoy to Tarak Nath Das, a Bengali revolutionary and scholar, in response to a request for support for India’s separation from British rule, which argued that the Indian people should seek to free themselves from British rule through non-violent protests and strikes, and other forms of peaceful resistance. The letter soon gained international attention after it was published in the Free Hindustan, and it came to the attention of the young Mahatma Gandhi. Drawing on a variety of sources, cultures and teachings, Tolstoy’s letter was instrumental in forming Gandhi’s views on non-violent resistance – as Gandhi himself acknowledges in his introduction: ‘To me, as a humble follower of that great teacher whom I have long looked upon as one of my guides, it is a matter of honour to be connected with the publication of his letter’.Trade Review'One of the clearest thinkers in the western world, one of the greatest writers.' (Mahatma Gandhi) 'He is never dull, never stupid, never tired, never pedantic, never theatrical!' (James Joyce) 'The greatest of all novelists.' Renard Press Ltd In the Moss
Book SynopsisExponentially increasing levels of unemployment and simmering racial tension in Moss Side, inner Manchester, exploded into mass riots on the 8th of July 1981, following the siege of a police station. In the Moss frames the events from the perspectives of Janet, a student nurse working in A&E, and Nav, a Sikh police officer on the streets. Both crave a return to normality and just want to fit in, but when violence breaks out and a teenage boy is stabbed, they are thrust together and forced to confront questions that arise about what really happened in the Moss.Trade ReviewIn praise of Fridge, Zadow's first play: 'Every word of this script, from stage directions to dialogue, does so much heavy lifting, so that, for a slim volume, the emotional resonance is huge. I am very grateful to have had the chance to discover this talented playwright.' (Ellie Hawkes) 'I would highly recommend you pick up this delightful jewel of a play… an intricate, highly plotted story that twists and turns, leaving you feeling unsettled and yet strangely calm.' (Zoe Radley) 'This play is proof that you don’t need much to make a great story: 3 characters and 1 fridge.' (Anne Galmiche-Johnson) 'Zadow offers a powerful and thought-provoking look at the intricacies of memory, nostalgia and the tribulations of early adulthood.' (James Bell, A Younger Theatre)

Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd Business as usual after Marikana: Corporate power
Book SynopsisSix years after the Marikana massacre, we have still seen minimal change for mineworkers and mining communities. Although much has been written about the days leading up to August 16, 2012, and how little has been done, few have analyzed the policies and system that make such a tragedy possible. Lonmin Platinum Mine and the events of August 16th are a microcosm of the mining sector and how things can go wrong when society leaves everything to government and ""big business"". Business as Usual after Marikana is a comprehensive analysis of mining in South Africa. Written by respected academics and practitioners in the field, it looks into the history, policies, and business practices that brought us to this point.Trade Review“This publication, which starts by examining the long-term business relations between BASF and Lonmin, goes on to drill deeper into the hard rock of the persistent structures of inequality. By doing so we will understand that Marikana is not the tragic failure of an otherwise improving economic system but rather a calculated form of collateral damage.” – Bishop Jo Seoka, former president of the South African Council of Churches

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Transparent Lobbying and Democracy
Book Synopsis"The authors come up with some innovative tools, namely the “Catalogue of transparent lobbying”. They look at and evaluate the impact on both key stakeholders (lobbyists and targets of lobbying), monitoring of lobbying activities and sanctioning for breaches of rules. This tool holds out benchmarking capacity of sound framework for understanding of lobbying in the context of democracy, legitimacy of decision-making and accountability."David Ondráčka, member of global Board of Transparency International, head of Transparency International, Czech Republic"Transparent Lobbying and Democracy provides a comprehensive view into the phenomenon of lobbying... As a well-established scientist specializing in democracy, civil society and the public sphere, I see it as a useful and enriching contribution to the debate on lobbying, its necessary transparency and its role in the democratization process. This book has the potential to reach an international audience of experts and interested lay persons, and both complement and compete with publications on similar issues."Karel B. Müller, University of Economics in Prague, Czech RepublicThis book deals with the current, as yet unsolved, problem of transparency of lobbying. In the current theories and prevalent models that deal with lobbying activities, there is no reflection of the degree of transparency of lobbying, mainly due to the unclear distinction between corruption, lobbying in general, and transparent lobbying. This book provides a perspective on transparency in lobbying in a comprehensive and structured manner. It delivers an interdisciplinary approach to the topic and creates a methodology for assessing the transparency of lobbying, its role in the democratization process and a methodology for evaluating the main consequences of transparency. The new approach is applied to assess lobbying regulations in the countries of Central Eastern Europe and shows a method for how lobbying in other regions of the world may also be assessed.Table of Contents1 Introduction2 Democracy and lobbying3 Transparency in democratic decision making4 Methodology of research on lobbying regulation5 A theoretical model of lobbying6 Past and present practice of lobbying and its regulation7 Transparent lobbying in Central and Eastern European Countries8 Open Government and its impact on the lobbying environment in CEE countries9 Conclusion

Transcript Verlag Amnesty International and Women’s Rights:
Book SynopsisAmnesty International's (AI) focus on civil and political rights has marked their work with a gender bias from the outset. In the first comprehensive look at AI's work on women's rights, Miriam Ganzfried illustrates the development of their activities regarding women's rights issues over twenty years. Through interviews with staff members and activists and unprecedented access to archive material from the Swiss and the German AI sections, she shows how women activists strategized to make AI increase its work on women's rights. Additionally, the book demonstrates that, despite the leadership's commitment to the Stop Violence Against Women campaign, internal resistance hampered the integration of women's rights into the organization's overall work.Trade Review"The book is a humbling reminder of how difficult it has been to arrive at an agreement that women's rights are human rights. It will no doubt serve as a key reference for tracking progress on the integration of women's rights within AI and in human rights discourse more broadly in the years to come." ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Rocking St. Petersburg: Transcultural Flows &
Book SynopsisIn this remarkable book, David-Emil Wickström traces the transcultural flow of popular music production emanating from St. Petersburg, a central hub of the Russian music scene. With a specific focus on the post-Soviet emigrant community in Germany and their event 'Russendisko', Wickström -- himself a trumpet player in two local bands -- explores St Petersburg's vibrant music scene, which provides an electrifying platform for musical exchange. The findings shed a new light on Soviet and post-Soviet popular music history and even Russia's relationship to Ukraine. Wickström demonstrates the filtering processes embedded in transcultural flows and how music is attributed new meanings within new contexts. This innovative book not only promotes a deeper understanding of the role of popular music in society, it also enables a better comprehension of cultural processes in the second decade after the fall of the Soviet Union.

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Ukraine's Euromaidan: Analyses of a Civil
Book SynopsisThe papers presented in this volume analyze the civil uprising known as Euromaidan that began in central Kyiv in late November 2013, when the Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych opted not to sign an Association Agreement with the European Union, and continued over the following months. The topics include the motivations and expectations of protesters, organized crime, nationalism, gender issues, mass media, the Russian language, and the impact of Euromaidan on Ukrainian politics as well as on the EU, Russia, and Belarus. The goal of the book is less to offer a definitive account than one that represents a variety of aspects of a mass movement that captivated world attention and led to the downfall of the Yanukovych presidency. The authors comprise well known and younger scholars who work on contemporary Ukraine and its neighbors.

Zubaan The Mothers of Manipur – Twelve Women Who Made
Book SynopsisJuly 15, 2004, Imphal (Manipur, India): An amazing scene unfolds in front of Kangla Fort, the headquarters of the Assam Rifles, a unit of the Indian army. Soldiers and officers watch aghast as twelve women, all in their sixties and seventies, position themselves in front of the gates and then, one by one, strip themselves naked. The imas, the mothers of Manipur, are in a cold fury, protesting the custodial rape and murder by the army of Thangjam Manorama, a 32-year-old woman suspected of being a militant. The women hold aloft banners and shout, “Indian Army Rape Us” and “Take Our Flesh.” Never has this happened before and the army is appalled. Very soon, news of the protest goes viral. People around the country are shocked. Can this be possible? A naked protest in India by mothers? In this unusual book, journalist Teresa Rehman tells the story of these twelve women, the momentous decision they took, and how they carried it out with precision and care. In doing so she connects the reader to the broader history of conflict-torn Manipur and the courage and resistance of its people—in particular its women.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Organizing Occupy Wall Street: This is Just
Book SynopsisThis book is the first study of the processes and structures of the Occupy Wall Street movement, written from the perspective of a core organizer who was involved from the inception to the end. While much has been written on OWS, few books have focused on how the movement was organized. Marisa Holmes, an organizer of OWS in New York City, aims to fill this gap by deriving the theory from the practice and analyzing a broad range of original primary sources, from collective statements, structure documents, meeting minutes, and live tweets, to hundreds of hours of footage from the OWS Media Working Group archive. In doing so, she reveals how the movement was organized in practice, which experiments were most successful, and what future generations can learn.Trade Review“Occupy Wall Street (OWS) was a two-month occupation of Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan in 2011. … Throughout the book one gets the sense that what occupiers most wanted from the experience was a sense of community. … I found a lot of new words and new ideas in this book. ISEAS Rhizome vs Regime: Southeast Asia's Digitally
Book SynopsisIn Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar, democratic regression and the reconsolidation of authoritarian regimes have triggered the rise of social media-driven protest movements. These are pioneered by a new generati on of acti vist youth, distinguishing themselves from previous student and youth movements by the digitally mediated, decentralized and diverse nature of their protest. While experimenting with digitally mediated repertoires of action adopted and adapted from similar struggles elsewhere, these protesters forge transnational links that give rise to new protest assemblages across and beyond the region. This is exemplified by the social media-based #MilkTeaAlliance, in which the distinct protests in Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar and other countries are conjoined through extended solidarity and affinity ties in a common "generational" struggle against entrenched authoritarianism. The youth resistance in Hong Kong was instrumental in driving this trend.
