Taylor & Francis Ltd Protest Analysing Current Trends
Book SynopsisThe politics of the twenty-first century is marked by dissent, tumult and calls for radical change, whether through food riots, anti-war protests, anti-government tirades, anti-blasphemy marches, anti-austerity demonstrations, anti-authoritarian movements and anti-capitalist occupations. Interestingly, contemporary political protests are borne of both the Right and Left and are staged in both the Global North and South. Globally, different instances of protest have drawn attention to the deep fissures which challenge the idea of globalisation as a force for peace. Given the diversity of these protests, it is necessary to examine the particular nature of grievances, the sort of change which is sought and the extent to which localised protest can have global implications. The contributions in this book draw on the theoretical work of Hardt and Negri, David Graeber and Judith Butler, among others, in order explore the nature of hegemony, the Occupy movement, the Arab Spring, the responTable of Contents1. Rocky Mountain Books The Third Dive: An Investigation Into the Death
Book SynopsisBased on the provocative film documentary of the same name, The Third Dive investigates the shocking death of a world-renowned conservation activist. When experienced diver and award-winning filmmaker Rob Stewart (Sharkwater and Sharkwater: Extinction) drowned while diving off the coast of the Florida Keys in 2017, it was a shock to the world's environmental movement.Reports suggested that Stewart was encouraged to perform a dangerous and ultimately fatal dive by a reckless Svengali-like instructor named Peter Sotis. Some bloggers went so far as to report that Sotis survived the dive by clawing his way onto the boat first, leaving Stewart to drown.A civil case was launched which directed blame at Horizon Divers, the company that had taken Stewart out on the dive. The allegation was that they had not done their jobs properly and left him to die in the water.Through interviews and investigative reporting, The Third Dive is a compelling read that attempts to uncover the mysterious and disturbing circumstances surrounding Rob Stewart's untimely death.

Icon Books In Search of the Lost Chord: 1967 and the Hippie
Book Synopsis'Danny Goldberg is probably one of the purest, most reasonableguides you could ask for to 1967.' Ex-Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. 'Weaves together rollicking, rousing, wonderfully colourful anddisparate narratives to remind us how the energies and aspirations of thecounterculture were intertwined with protest and reform . mesmerising.' The NationIt wasthe year that saw the release of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts ClubBand, and of debut albums from the Doors, the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix andJanis Joplin. The year of the Summer of Love and LSD; the Monterey Pop Festivaland Black Power; Muhammad Ali's conviction for draft avoidance and MartinLuther King Jr's public opposition to war in Vietnam. On its 50th anniversary, music business veteranDanny Goldberg analyses 1967, looking not only at the political influences, butalso the spiritual, musical and psychedelic movements that defined the era, providing a unique perspective on how and why its legacy lives on today.Exhaustively researched and informed byinterviews including Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary and Gil Scott-Heron, InSearch of the Lost Chord is the synthesis of a fascinating andcomplicated period in our social and countercultural history that was about somuch more than sex, drugs and rock n roll.Trade ReviewHippie 101-a kaleidoscopic snapshot of the Big Bang fifty years ago, three parts social and musical history, one part personal memoir, a sweeping overview that also manages to be up close and personal. Bravo. -- Joel SelvinDanny Goldberg has done something I would not have thought possible: with diligent research, sharp prose, a clear mind, and an open heart, he has rescued a period of history from the clichés that had previously defined it. -- Eric AltermanThis extraordinary book transports us back to a 'moment' when, as Goldberg writes, the phrase '"peace and love" was not meant or taken ironically.' Beginning at sixteen, Goldberg was a participant in the rise and cresting of the hippie movement, the hippie ideal, which has been trivialized and disparaged in later decades. He cuts through the obfuscation and recreates the sense of magic, wonder, intimacy, and community that was in the air and you could breathe it in. If you want to know, or remember, what it was like to be alive and part of that historic wave, I can think of no better guide than In Search of the Lost Chord. -- Sara DavidsonIn a time of the harshest dissonance, Danny Goldberg's In Search of the Lost Chord arrives like soma from a heaven that is still up there if you look hard enough. One the great gambits of the rightist culture has been to paint the 1960s, and the hippie movement in particular, as some stammering, slothful stoner movie. As an eyewitness, I can testify it was much, much more. Danny Goldberg's highly informative missive from that long, strange trip not only reminds veterans of the glorious possibilities of the age but also serves as an excellent primer to onward generations. -- Mark JacobsonGoldberg plunges into a thorough, panoramic account of the culture, politics, media, music and mores of the year to demolish the idea that it was trivial. He has researched and interviewed widely - his section on underground newspapers is impressively detailed - and he's been there with many of the principals through all these years. Some of the stories, like the development and popularization of LSD and the saga of the Monterey Pop Festival, have been told before (though readers may be surprised to learn that psychedelic music's launchpad was a Nevada dive called the Red Dog Saloon). But Goldberg's deep purchase on his subject and his storytelling ease make it fresh. -- The New York TimesGoldberg is fascinating on the origins of political activism, from the Cold War peace movement and the fallout from the Korean War. * The Sunday Times *Goldberg brings a personal passion that itself illustrates the lasting resonance of the hippie era. * Publishers Weekly *At the core of Goldberg's readable, entertainingly anecdotal book is a chronicle and summary of what the Sixties cultural moment has left posterity. * The Times *Goldberg has created a detailed insight into an important snapshot of our history whilst also banishing the popular cliché of the hippie movement... In Search of the Lost Chord is also a timely reminder that people power does indeed have an effect and that change is always possible. * Buzz *

Verso Books We Fight Fascists: The 43 Group and Their
Book SynopsisIn 1946 many Jewish soldiers returned to their homes in England imagining that they had fought and defeated the forces of fascism in Europe. Yet in London they found a revived fascist movement inspired by Sir Oswald Mosley and stirring up agitation against Jews and communists. Many felt that the government, the police and even the Jewish Board of Deputies were ignoring the threat; so they had to take matters into their own hands, by any means necessary.Forty-three Jewish servicemen met together and set up a group that tirelessly organised, infiltrated meetings, and broke up street demonstrations to stop the rebirth of the far right. The group included returned war heroes; women who went undercover; and young Jews, such as hairdresser Vidal Sassoon, seeking adventure. From 1947, the 43 Group grew into a powerful troop that could muster hundreds of fighters turning meetings into mass street brawls at short notice. The history of the 43 Group is not just a gripping story of a forgotten moment in Britain's postwar history; it is also a timely lesson in how to confront fascism, and how to win.Trade ReviewBrilliant, compelling and very timely. This is the sort of history we should all know about, especially in these troubled times, but were never taught at school. -- Keith Lowe, author of The Fear and the FreedomInspiring... the fundamental questions it raises have yet to disappear from our political landscape. -- Daniel Trilling * Guardian *A new, comprehensive history of the group. * The Economist *Sonabend's debut brilliantly chronicles the 43 Group's lightning-fast progress from a homespun organization with a handful of Jewish ex-servicemen...to a surprisingly sophisticated one with up to 2,000 members and intelligence and surveillance branches. * Haaretz *The 43 Group's extraordinary resilience and bravery deserve to be far more widely appreciated. * Morning Star *Sonabend delights in these madcap tales of the 43 Group's violent confrontations with their fascist opponents and the ways the members managed to elude the (sometimes-fascist-sympathizing) police. -- Mari Cohen * Jewish Currents *Daniel Sonabend brilliantly captures...a tale of often bloody, and occasionally terrifying "organized chaos." * Times of Israel *Sonabend combines academic rigour with an easy, readable style, all of which helps to throw into sharp relief the difficult questions the story raises. * New Statesman *A timely book...Sonabend deserves credit for resurrecting this story * Literary Review *This important book is not simply a trip down memory lane, but a warning from history. It should be mandatory for those who do not see themselves as bystanders. * Jewish Chronicle *Thrilling...full of unforgettable characters, clandestine activities, deception, surveillance and more than a few full-blooded street brawls...A must read for all antifascists * Hope Not Hate *Not for the politically faint-hearted, have a milk shake handy whilst reading. * Counterfire *Sonabend rescues the '43 Group' from...obscurity...a victory * Chartist *Readable and well-researched...a timely reminder that militant anti-fascism not only has deep historical roots but can also be an effective bulwark against the extreme right. * Patterns of Prejudice Journal *

Transcript Verlag Amnesty International and Women’s Rights:
Book SynopsisAmnesty International's (AI) focus on civil and political rights has marked their work with a gender bias from the outset. In the first comprehensive look at AI's work on women's rights, Miriam Ganzfried illustrates the development of their activities regarding women's rights issues over twenty years. Through interviews with staff members and activists and unprecedented access to archive material from the Swiss and the German AI sections, she shows how women activists strategized to make AI increase its work on women's rights. Additionally, the book demonstrates that, despite the leadership's commitment to the Stop Violence Against Women campaign, internal resistance hampered the integration of women's rights into the organization's overall work.Trade Review"The book is a humbling reminder of how difficult it has been to arrive at an agreement that women's rights are human rights. It will no doubt serve as a key reference for tracking progress on the integration of women's rights within AI and in human rights discourse more broadly in the years to come." ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Rocking St. Petersburg: Transcultural Flows &
Book SynopsisIn this remarkable book, David-Emil Wickström traces the transcultural flow of popular music production emanating from St. Petersburg, a central hub of the Russian music scene. With a specific focus on the post-Soviet emigrant community in Germany and their event 'Russendisko', Wickström -- himself a trumpet player in two local bands -- explores St Petersburg's vibrant music scene, which provides an electrifying platform for musical exchange. The findings shed a new light on Soviet and post-Soviet popular music history and even Russia's relationship to Ukraine. Wickström demonstrates the filtering processes embedded in transcultural flows and how music is attributed new meanings within new contexts. This innovative book not only promotes a deeper understanding of the role of popular music in society, it also enables a better comprehension of cultural processes in the second decade after the fall of the Soviet Union.

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Ukraine's Euromaidan: Analyses of a Civil
Book SynopsisThe papers presented in this volume analyze the civil uprising known as Euromaidan that began in central Kyiv in late November 2013, when the Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych opted not to sign an Association Agreement with the European Union, and continued over the following months. The topics include the motivations and expectations of protesters, organized crime, nationalism, gender issues, mass media, the Russian language, and the impact of Euromaidan on Ukrainian politics as well as on the EU, Russia, and Belarus. The goal of the book is less to offer a definitive account than one that represents a variety of aspects of a mass movement that captivated world attention and led to the downfall of the Yanukovych presidency. The authors comprise well known and younger scholars who work on contemporary Ukraine and its neighbors.

Oxford University Press The Movement and The Sixties Protest in America from Greensboro to Wounded Knee
Book SynopsisThis is a broad history of the various reform and radical groups of the 1960s who went under the name of the Movement. It demonstrates what profound influence the Movement had upon the period and the reasons why it fragmented and disappeared in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This is the first major interpretative history of this subject.Trade Review"Terry Anderson has written the best book yet on the broad protest movement that dominated American life in the 1960s. Unlike earlier writers, who focus on elites or just one group, he offers a kaleidoscopic view that stresses the grass-roots involvement of American youth as they challenged both the politics and the values of their elders in a frontal assault on the established Cold War culture. It is a tour de force."--Robert A. Divine, George W. Littlefield Professor in American History, University of Texas at Austin"A splendid study, exhaustively researched and engagingly written, and a useful--indeed essential--corrective to the new conventional wisdom about a tumultuous era."--George C. Herring, Professor of History, University of Kentucky"A marvelous tour de force....Anderson's book is an indispensable tool for anyone trying to understand the perplexing range of movements during the 1960s. It should be on the bookshelf of every serious student of social activism."--Mary King, author of Freedom SongAnderson has written a very detailed and absorbing account of these events..a detailed description of events, this is a useful book * Socialist Review *"A disturbing tale, well told in exhaustive detail....It is the merit of Terry Anderson's book that it captures the tone, as well as the events, of a decade in which America finally emerged from cold-war simplicities and began the painful discovery of itself."--The Economist"Hundreds of voices resound in this thoroughgoing analysis of '60s radicalism....A highly accessible survey that should be the standard for years to come."--Kirkus Reviews"A valuable, refreshingly unbiased reassessment of the '60s legacy." --Publishers Weekly"Anderson's well-written, accessible history is much more than nostalgic reading for baby boomers, the great majority of whom sat on the sidelines during most of the decade while a minority acted. Neither is it a polemic in unquestioning defense of '60s activists. Instead, it attempts to understand the motives of 'the movement' and place its actions in the context of the times. In doing so, it provides a valuable counterpoint to the reductionist and revisionist views now prevalent."--The Christian Science Monitor"For those already tested in the political fires of the '60s, [Anderson's] book is a reminder to keep alert and stay active. For a younger generation, he provides a concise and closely packed history that precedes the roil and boil of today's political activity."--The Seattle Times"Perceptive....Anderson takes on all strands of the Movement."--Booklist (starred review)"Ably surveys a busy, complex era....This is a resonant book. Most of all, it recalls a not-so-distant past when Americans thought we could and should reform our society."--The Dallas Morning NewsThis volume is a lively account of the turbulence experienced by American society after two decades of Cold War...While the whole book is compelling, chapter 6, entitled "Power and Liberation", is particularly incisive...a welcome addition to the literature of the period. Written with both passion and control. * The Historian *"A fascinating, extensively researched account of a time when the younger generation opened pop culture's Pandora's box, and an estranged segment of America took to the streets and said: 'We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore.'...Dig it, man. It's a trip."--Fort Worth Star-Telegram"Anderson leaves no lunch counter unturned. It is all there, from Rosa Parks and the Summer of Love to bra burnings and the March on the Pentagon, complete with selected quotations from various songs of the era atop each chapter."--William McGurn, writing in The Wall Street Journala very detailed and absorbing account * Socialist Review, November 1996 *Table of ContentsPreface Introduction, Spawning Ground: Cold War Culture I. Oxford University Press Nonviolent Struggle Theories Strategies and Dynamics
Book SynopsisFrom Gandhi''s movement to win Indian independence to the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011, an expanding number of citizens have used nonviolent action to win political goals. While such events have captured the public imagination, they have also generated a new surge of scholarly interest in the field of nonviolence and civil resistance studies. Although researchers have produced new empirical data, theories, and insights into the phenomenon of nonviolent struggle, the field is still quite unfamiliar to many students and scholars. In Nonviolent Struggle: Theories, Strategies, and Dynamics, sociologist Sharon Nepstad provides a succinct introduction to the field of civil resistance studies, detailing its genesis, key concepts and debates, and a summary of empirical findings. Nepstad depicts the strategies and dynamics at play in nonviolent struggles, and analyzes the factors that shape the trajectory and outcome of civil resistance movements. The book draws on a vast array of historical examples, including the U.S. civil rights movement, the Indonesian uprising against President Suharto, the French Huguenot resistance during World War II, and Cesar Chavez''s United Farm Workers. Nepstad describes both principled and pragmatic nonviolent traditions and explains various categories of nonviolent action, concluding with an assessment of areas for future research. A comprehensive treatment of the philosophy and strategy of nonviolent resistance, Nonviolent Struggle is essential reading for students, scholars, and anyone with a general interest in peace studies and social change.Trade ReviewIt is not an easy task to capture a moving target, but Nepstad has successfully done so, having effectively woven the different threads of this emerging field together. Nonviolent Struggle provides a comprehensive overview of this still under-researched phenomenon and in that sense is clearly one of the foundational academic works... Nonviolent Struggle is a must-read for scholars, students, practitioners and anyone with a general interest in conflict transformation, peace studies, social change and social movements. * Siddharth Tripathi, Democratization *Table of ContentsList of Tables and Figures ; Preface ; Acknowledgements ; Chapter 1: What Nonviolence Is and What It Is Not ; Chapter 2: Religious and Ethical Positions on Violence and Nonviolence ; Chapter 3: The Strategy of Nonviolent Resistance ; Chapter 4: Types of Nonviolent Action ; Chapter 5: Dynamics of Nonviolent Struggles ; Chapter 6: Outcomes and Consequences of Nonviolent Struggles ; Chapter 7: Armed Forces, Defections, and Nonviolent Change ; Chapter 8: The Global Diffusion of Nonviolence ; Chapter 9: Future Directions in Civil Resistance Research ; Appendix: Discussion Questions ; Endnotes ; Glossary of Terms ; References

Yale University Press The AntiEnlightenment Tradition
Book SynopsisPresents a controversial view of the origins of fascism, locating them in the eighteenth century with the advent of the Anti-Enlightenment, a far earlier date than most historians. This book contends that J G Herder, Edmund Burke, and Joseph de Maistre can be connected to the origins of the Anti-Enlightenment.Trade Review"Few scholars comprehend the nexus between Counter-Enlightenment discourse and fascist ideology as well as Zeev Sternhell. In Anti-Enlightenment Tradition, Sternhell provides a series of provocative and disturbing arguments to demonstrate convincingly just how fraught and intimate those linkages were. Anti-Enlightenment Tradition represents a landmark and transformative contribution to the political history of ideas."—Richard Wolin, author of The Seduction of Unreason: The Intellectual Romance with Fascism from Nietzsche to Postmodernism -- Richard Wolin"Zeev Sternhell is one of the most original scholars dealing with the historical roots of fascism and the European Right. This new book is a masterly synthesis which will generate vigorous debate and open new vistas for the understanding of contemporary political thought."—Saul Friedlander, author of The Years of Extermination -- Saul Friedlander"In his The Anti-Enlightenment Tradition, Professor Sternhell has provided us another work of impeccable scholarship and intellectual stimulation. It is recommended to all who are interested in the fate of our civilization."—A. James Gregor, University of California, Berkeley -- A. Book Synopsis"The authors come up with some innovative tools, namely the “Catalogue of transparent lobbying”. They look at and evaluate the impact on both key stakeholders (lobbyists and targets of lobbying), monitoring of lobbying activities and sanctioning for breaches of rules. This tool holds out benchmarking capacity of sound framework for understanding of lobbying in the context of democracy, legitimacy of decision-making and accountability."David Ondráčka, member of global Board of Transparency International, head of Transparency International, Czech Republic"Transparent Lobbying and Democracy provides a comprehensive view into the phenomenon of lobbying... As a well-established scientist specializing in democracy, civil society and the public sphere, I see it as a useful and enriching contribution to the debate on lobbying, its necessary transparency and its role in the democratization process. This book has the potential to reach an international audience of experts and interested lay persons, and both complement and compete with publications on similar issues."Karel B. Müller, University of Economics in Prague, Czech RepublicThis book deals with the current, as yet unsolved, problem of transparency of lobbying. In the current theories and prevalent models that deal with lobbying activities, there is no reflection of the degree of transparency of lobbying, mainly due to the unclear distinction between corruption, lobbying in general, and transparent lobbying. This book provides a perspective on transparency in lobbying in a comprehensive and structured manner. It delivers an interdisciplinary approach to the topic and creates a methodology for assessing the transparency of lobbying, its role in the democratization process and a methodology for evaluating the main consequences of transparency. The new approach is applied to assess lobbying regulations in the countries of Central Eastern Europe and shows a method for how lobbying in other regions of the world may also be assessed.Table of Contents1 Introduction2 Democracy and lobbying3 Transparency in democratic decision making4 Methodology of research on lobbying regulation5 A theoretical model of lobbying6 Past and present practice of lobbying and its regulation7 Transparent lobbying in Central and Eastern European Countries8 Open Government and its impact on the lobbying environment in CEE countries9 Conclusion
