    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAs early as the 1970s, Wolfgang Rahs (*1952) was inspired by the avant-garde art scene in Graz by the contemporary art festival Steirischer Herbst and the Forum Stadtpark collective, one of the action groups and joint ventures of artists from different genres; he is also member of the artists’ union Gruppe 77. Educated in metalcraft and goldsmithing at the Ortweinschule in Graz, Rahs alternates in his works between jewellery, installation, performance, and processual pieces — free works that reflect the concept of jewellery in an all-embracing manner. His examination of myths (Skythisches Stillleben), of conditions he encounters (Verdammte Brosche), and of his own existence (Mauspfad Köln) plays a key role. An impressive publication on this exceptional artist whose work challenges and therefore expands our traditional understanding of jewellery. Text in English and German.

Book SynopsisMargit Jäschke (*1962) lives and works as an independent artist in Halle (Saale), Germany. It was here in the 1980s that she studied at the Burg Giebichenstein art school under Renate Heintze and Dorothea Prühl. The title of her publication is symbolic of her oeuvre: Kairos is the Greek god of the fortuitous moment, who can only be caught fleetingly by his forelock. It is this precious moment that Margit Jäschke seizes, harnessing it to fuel her creativity. Discover this renowned artist’s multifaceted oeuvre, which blurs the boundaries between jewellery, painting, and sculpture. Book SynopsisRare stones have fascinated people for thousands of years. Their extraction is never free of conflict, but at the same time the trading and processing of stones brings together people from the most remote regions of the world. In Germany, the town of Idar-Oberstein is considered a hub for gemstone trading and processing, and students come from all over the world to study and work here with rare materials. In LithoMania, part of the Design Lab exhibition series at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin, students from the Idar-Oberstein campus of the Trier University of Applied Sciences explore the complex ambivalence of gemstones, going beyond their use in jewellery design through objects, drawings, photographs, and texts. Since 2019 the exhibition series Design Lab has invited various design labs, organisations, and students to present their current projects and to enter into a dialogue with the Kunstgewerbemuseum collection. Book SynopsisThe Italian goldsmith of the “Paduan School” Giampaolo Babetto is famous for his jewellery – geometrically distinct shapes arranged into refined entities of extraordinary perfection and beauty. However, the artist’s wide-ranging spectrum also includes furniture design, silverwork, sculptures, liturgical utensils, and architecture; even his design drawings possess an autonomous character and artistic value. In addition to Christian iconography, his sources of inspiration include the fresco cycles of Renaissance artist Jacopo da Pontormo but also echo Minimalism, Neoplasticism, Neoconstructivism, and “arte programmata/cinetica.” The Entity of Being presents the first overarching survey of the virtuoso Babetto. Book SynopsisThe Art & Times of Daniel Jocz presents the entrancing and challenging work of American jewellery artist and sculptor Daniel Jocz. There is a spontaneous quality to the work, yet it is always rich with meaning. His open spirit is fully embodied in the 2007 neckpiece series An American’s Riff on the Millstone Ruff. Inspired by the extravagant scale of 17th-century Dutch ruffs at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, he decided to update them with automobile paint. Jeannine Falino takes an in-depth look at the twists and turns of Jocz’s long career, from his early geometric sculptures to the fashion-forward flocked Candy Wear collection, and from his ruminations on Marlene Dietrich in the form of necklaces featuring enamel smoked cigarettes to the wall reliefs he explores today. Wendy Steiner considers Jocz’s place in the avant-garde through the lens of fashion and culture, while Patricia Harris and David Lyon explore his involvement in the rollicking Boston jewellery scene of the late 20th century.

Book SynopsisThe work of Esther Brinkmann is characterised by the meaning she bestows on the ring, its relationship to the hand and, perhaps most surprisingly, to its case. The Swiss artist prefers processed and textured materials, which now also include new component forms, techniques, and substances since her time living in China and India. She established a further education training program in jewellery design — a unique undertaking in Switzerland — at the Haute École d’Art et de Design (HEAD) in Geneva. Here, her knowledge and autonomy in her work have already shaped several other artistic careers. This publication presents Esther Brinkman’s oeuvre from the past 30 years and highlights for the first time the remarkable strength and the freedom that distinguish the artist’s rich career. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisAlongside Erasmus of Rotterdam, Johannes Reuchlin (1455–1522) is one of the most important European humanists whose works marked the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The year 2022 marks the 500th anniversary of the Pforzheim-born jurist, Hebraist, and religious philosopher’s death, cause indeed for an exhibition and publication to bring jewellery, writings, and language into a stimulating dialogue and to offer new meanings to the titular mystery of signs. At the fore stands the human quest for understanding and tolerance, which has lost none of its relevance today. One particular focal point comprises selected manuscripts and works by Reuchlin, highlighted from new perspectives. An additional emphasis is placed on objects that reflect Reuchlin’s cognitive world through script and symbols from the resplendent collection of the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim [Pforzheim jewellery museum]. With contributions by Jonathan Boyd, Beatriz Chadour-Sampson, Matthias Dall’Asta, Cornelie Holzach, Wolfgang Mayer, Susanne Nagel, Katja Poljanac, Stefan Rhein, Nathan Ron, Isabel Schmidt-Mappes, Pierre Vesperin, and Anja Wolkenhauer. The 20th competition demonstrates the variety of works at a high level: 121 silversmiths from 21 countries submitted hollow- and flatware or free-formed works. An expert jury was again assembled this year: Dirk Allgaier, head of Arnoldsche Art Publishers, Stuttgart; Dr. Claudia Banz, curator for design at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin; and JaKyung Shin, silversmith and assistant professor at Seoul National University, Korea, selected 67 impressive silver works. Book SynopsisSince the late 1980s, American jeweller Keith Lewis (*1959) has been consistently tackling issues of Queer identity and politics in his figurative and narrative jewellery, including a groundbreaking series of memorial jewels addressing the impact of the AIDS crisis on himself and his community. Often witty, sometimes shocking, frequently erotic, and surprisingly moving, his jewellery is an act of remembering and witnessing, and a joyous assertion that desire and pleasure, wonderful ends in themselves, can collapse historical distance and connect the past and the present. Written by Damian Skinner and featuring four of Lewis’s artist talks documenting key preoccupations and series, this monograph surveys a bold, provocative, and ambitious body of work that deserves to be widely known.

Book SynopsisThe discovery of the Oberstein company Jakob Bengel as a prominent jewellery manufacturer has liberated Oberstein from the stigma of being the “underdog” of the German jewellery industry. Wilhelm Lindemann and Christianne Weber-Stöber document in this current study its independent contribution to the evolution of early German jewellery design between 1910 and 1933 using Bengel as an example. Highlights from the collection of Drs. Margarete and Heribert Händel, hitherto unpublished pieces of Bengel jewellery, and contemporary designs attest to the exceptional level of production as part of the reformist ideas of the Deutscher Werkbund, the German Schools of Art and Crafts, and the Bauhaus. Book SynopsisContemporary gold- and silversmithing encompasses a vast range. Increasingly, a daring, (self-)critical, and inventive scene is edging its way to the fore, focusing on challenging the innovative expansion of classical forms and motifs of jewellery, vessels, and hollowware. Purpose, function, and our normative understanding of beauty are placed on a new footing through experiments with materials and performative stagings. Socially relevant considerations and artistic references inform the objects’ designs and are an invitation to an entertaining yet recondite “tour de plasir” featuring some 150 works by 28 artists - proof once more of gold- and silversmithing’s controversial creative potential today. He gives things an unexpected meaning. Inspired by movement and his fascination with the visual quality of materials and objects, shapes, and colours, he creates a synthesis of supposed opposites, and it is this new context that elevates these connections into something precious. The four series of jewellery presented in the book take a poetical look at the perpetual becoming and passing of life and of things, reflecting the complexity of these existential themes, at times with humour, other times with foreboding. In 2022 the artist himself described it thus: I was always fascinated by the endless cyclical flow of things, be they in nature or in the man-made world; the movement of growth aimed at the fleeting moment of its realisation, the consummation of this moment, followed by decay and finally a new beginning.Text in English and German.

Book SynopsisMany aspects of Medieval Western Indian temple art have been the subject of scholarly attention. One type of temple-image which has been identified but heretofore unstudied is the portrait. This study brings together evidence of more than 200 images of historical lay people and ascetics from the medieval temples of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The author emphasizes Jain specimens, but also includes a number of notable Hindu examples. However, it is the evidence of the Jain portraits that is by far the most significant. This book provides some startling insights into the beliefs and practices of the Svetambara sect of Jainism in a period from about the 12th to 17th centuries. The analysis of lay portraits illuminates some very significant episodes in this period of Jain history. The discussion of monks' portraits presents much that is contrary to expectation. Evidence indicates that even Jain monks donated portraits of other monks. This is surprising since gifting is a practice commonly thought to be a lay prerogative and not allowed to ascetics. The reasons for these monastic donations are discussed and investigated, and reveal that the worldview of medieval Jain monks was often something very different from that portrayed in much of Jain scholarship to date.

Book SynopsisAfter the introduction into geometry, perspective and the representation of materials in vol 1, this volume constitutes a thorough and complete study on the fundamental aspects of graphically depicting a wide variety of jewellery. Having learned about geometry, perspective and representation of materials in the first volume, this second book in this two-part series delves deeper into the process of designing jewellery, from the first sketch to the final representation, with special emphasis on how to work on ideas, plan a collection, and design and depict a wide variety of pieces. The fundamentals of drawing different pieces, such as necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets, are carefully explained and illustrated in the book, which includes all the technical details to be taken into consideration when planning a jewellery piece, from the executive point of view. Book SynopsisChus Bures creates miracles. Each piece of jewellery that emerges from his workshop boasts a complex genesis, stemming from an intersection between his genius-level thought processes and his maverick lifestyle. From exploring the versatility of buttons, to accentuating the geometric planes of the human body (Infinity Lines, 1990), and using minerals to emulate and exaggerate human features (seen in the striking 'Mae Nam' Collection of 2000), Bures' work is always perplexing, always stimulating, and always innovative. He refuses to be cowed by convention, and delights in challenging his clients and models. The bodily focus of his work makes every piece a startling, and often uncomfortable, insight into humanity. Bures may be a maestro of metal - the gauzy chainmail-esque veils in his Crochet collection, 2000, attest to that. Yet he has mastered the emotional dimensions of his jewellery as well as its physical properties. The relationship between his pieces and the people who collect and cherish them is essential to his artistic praxis. In Chus Bures, Portraits & Jewellery (2016), this is realised through a series of intense portraits by Antoine d'Agata, Alberto Garcia-Alix, and Andres Serrano. These pictures reveal a transgressive melding of jewel and subject: man becomes metal and metal becomes man. Watch ideas take on physical form, and immerse yourself in Bures' world of wearable art.

Book SynopsisFrédéric Zaavy's brilliant career as a master jeweller shone like a meteor but flamed out far too soon. Zaavy considered himself heir to the legacy of Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, gem dealer to Louis XIV, and was chosen as the exclusive jeweller for the 21st century revival of Fabergé. Zaavy's artistic genius lay in painting with precious stones and in engineering remarkable settings to hold those stones almost invisibly. His works achieved a preëminence in the thousand-year evolution of French jewellery. The influences on his life and work were myriad. Nature, quantum physics, art, music, spirituality, poetry, literature, and even science fiction all shaped his extraordinary world view and taste. He was a philosopher jeweller. Stardust encapsulates the last year of his life, from the moment he learned he would soon die, right through to the end, with his life still at full throttle. With a text by acclaimed French philosophical writer Gilles Hertzog and a stunning visual narrative by celebrated photographers John Bigelow Taylor and Dianne Dubler, Zaavy's work and life are presented in a portrait of what was and of what might have been. Through reproductions of weapons, jewels and accessories, it soon became one of the first official suppliers of the Teatro alla Scala, as well as signing contracts with prestigious institutions including La Fenice di Venezia, the Costanzi in Rome and the Colón of Buenos Aires. The industrious Milan after the Unification of Italy, of the National and International Expositions, of the years between the two world wars and of the economic boom has seen the owners of Corbella always acting as protagonists, first in the theatrical sector, with specific supplies to the great lyrical interpreters, from Margherita Carosio to Renata Tebaldi, then in the field of the great Italian producers of costume jewellery, up to the production changes due to the globalisation of the 21st century. Text in English and Italian.

Book SynopsisThe Museo del Gioiello in Vicenza - the only example in Italy entirely dedicated to jewellery - is renewed every two years: without permanent collections, it offers biennial exhibitions of unique and exclusive jewels in the evocative spaces of the Basilica Palladiana. For the third biennium since its inauguration (on display until 2020), the museum hosts 310 pieces of inestimable value, exhibited in nine thematic sections curated by as many internationally renowned experts. In presenting the masterpieces of this exhibition, this catalogue gathers the contributions of the curators which, far from the usual museum criteria of chronological or stylistic classification, restore the complexity of the jewel through multiple points of view, where the ancient dialogues with the contemporary and the masterpieces of the past are juxtaposed with those made with the technologies of the future. Text in English and Italian.

Book SynopsisSince ancient times, fashion jewellery in Italy has been, and still is, an important component of clothing. The history of fashion cannot be written without mentioning its jewels. This book presents 200 Italian fashion jewels that, spanning from the era of La Dolce Vita to the Pret à Porter of the Eighties, from '90s Minimalism to the Neo Baroque of the new millennium, define the aesthetic mirror of society and show the transformation of styles and customs, ambitions and conquests of women, the evolution of shapes and innovations of materials and new technologies. DIVA! Italian Glamor in Fashion Jewellery tells about fashion jewellery in its creative intersections with Italian excellence: craftsmanship, design and fashion. It is a typically Italian story based on the ability to combine creativity, manufacturing and industry, art and technology, beauty and innovation. The masters of costume jewellery enter a dialogue with the great stylists and the talents of design, three heterogeneous visions with a single great protagonist: the Italian fashion jewel. Text in English and Italian.

Five Continents Editions Gold, Silver & Brass: Jewellery of the Batak in

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe nearly 300 precious works shown here are artifacts of a once-flourishing jewellery tradition. The first book to examine the rich jewellery traditions of the Batak people in Indonesia is a gorgeous tribute to a vanishing way of life. Batak jewellery is characterised by a wide variety of materials and forms, and has many functions: Jewels can be status symbols, badges of rank, attributes of membership of a certain age group, amulets and talismans, or simply ornaments. Men, women, small children, and even babies were once adorned with gold, silver, brass, bronze, or the gold-and-copper alloy known as suasa. Today, the Batak wear traditional jewellery only for celebrations like weddings, and these stunning works are rapidly disappearing, being melted down or sold.

Book SynopsisThe exhibition and its accompanying catalogue are the first to examine the union of contemporary jewellery and the photographic image, demonstrating how each of these mediums is informed and enlarged by an engagement with the other. The works included, both historical pieces and recent creations by over eighty international art jewellers, suggest the richness of this encounter and the artistic strength embodied in this dynamic combination of object and image. The examples selected for the exhibition and catalogue traverse a remarkably wide range, from traditional and even sentimental formats (such as the locket) to entirely new formats. Drawing upon the abundance of imagery available today, from vintage daguerreotypes to analog and digital photographs, X-rays, and Internet jpegs, the artists whose work was selected for Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography express a stimulating range of ideas realised with a great diversity of materials and innovative jewellery-making approaches.
