Book SynopsisThis title offers a fascinating look at the one of the ancient world's most prized substances. Amber has fascinated mankind since the Palaeolithic era. Through exquisite visual examples and vivid classical texts, this book examines the myths and legends woven around amber - its employment in magic and medicine, its transport and carving, and its incorporation into jewellery, amulets, and other objects of prestige. Amber is a tree resin that has metamorphosed over millions of years into a hard, transparent, plastic-like polymer. In the ancient world it was treasured in its raw state, made into ornaments, sewn onto clothing, used to perfume oils and creams, ground into medicines, and burned as incense. It was dedicated to the gods and buried with the wealthy and powerful. Full of fascinating facts and stories, this book brings to life one of the world's most luminous substances.

Book SynopsisEvert Nijland (b. 1971) is one of the leading jewellery artists of his generation. Trained in the Conceptual Art and Minimalism of the 1990s at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, he developed a flamboyant and exuberant style, which drew on (art-) historical resources yet is thoroughly anchored in the present. A typical characteristic of Nijland is working with a variety of artisans. It enables him to integrate such diverse materials as porcelain, wood, textile or steel into his works. His use of glass in jewellery, in particular, is unparalleled. This publication presents an exciting review in opulent photographs of Evert Nijland's jewellery-making over twenty years. Montages of images are a particular highlight, in which jewellery from works of Western art is superimposed, serving Nijland as both a reference and a source of inspiration. Book Synopsis"When you land on this book, if you do not yet have an appreciation of butterflies or Chan’s workmanship, after reading, it will leave you in awe of both."—Beth Bernstein, Forbes “When I was a young boy, butterflies were flying colours – I knew not their name. Then butterflies became the Butterfly Lovers: a tragedy, a love story, a symbol of eternal love. As I grew older, I found them to embody the words of a great philosopher: life is but a dream; only we need to decide whether we want it to be the dream of a man, or the dream of a butterfly. I could not decide, and so I became The Butterfly Man.” – Wallace Chan Father of The Wallace Cut – an illusionary three-dimensional gemstone carving technique – and The Wallace Chan Porcelain – a ground-breaking material five times stronger than steel – Wallace Chan is a guiding light in the world of jewellery design. Always innovating, always testing boundaries with his materials and technique, Chan’s creations are as stunning as they are intricate. Compiled by jewellery experts, this book explores the cultural and personal significance of Wallace Chan’s most famous emblem: the butterfly. Winged Beauty: The Butterfly Jewellery Art of Wallace Chan features approximately 30 of his finest pieces. Enter a butterfly house of colourful gems, with brooches and necklaces so delicate they might have flown down and alighted on the page.Trade Review"Demonstrating both achievements, his signature bejeweled butterflies are the subject of a new book, Winged Beauty: The Butterfly Jewellery Art of Wallace Chan. In it, five jewelry experts discuss his technical advances as well as the artistry of these jeweled fantasies and Chan’s creative process. Illuminating the tome are color photos that bring the beauty of his pieces to life.” - Phyllis Schiller, Rapaport"When you land on this book, if you do not yet have an appreciation of butterflies or Chan’s workmanship, after reading, it will leave you in awe of both." - Beth Bernstein, Forbes

Book SynopsisThe form of this extraordinary bronze lamp, the most elaborate of several produced by Riccio (Andrea Briosco), is based on a Roman sandal, and its surface is covered with intricate reliefs modelled with a goldsmith’s refinement and crisp detail. The subjects evoke the populace of classical art and poetry, including a Nereid and Triton, Pan, harpies and innumerable putti, along with goats, musical instruments, shells, masks and garlands. Inspired by the Roman half-boot, the lamp is designed as a bizarre shoe balanced on a pyramidal base, and, as Ian Wardropper discusses in his essay, it would have provided its owner with much pleasure and intellectual stimulation. Early in its history, the lamp is known to have belonged to a series of distinguished Paduan collectors. Paired with Wardropper’s essay is a beautiful poem by James Fenton.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments by Ian Wardropper; The World of Andrea Riccio by James Fenton; Riccio’s Oil Lamp by Ian Wardropper; Notes Notes; Bibliography; Index

This first full scale monograph on the artist offers the breadth of Krentzin’s engaging creations, which he based on his love of toys, movement, and the mechanical arts. Book SynopsisThe first book celebrating Dolce & Gabbana Alta Gioielleria, a kaleidoscope of creativity in which formal invention is accompanied by rediscovery of historical Italian craftsmanship. Dolce & Gabbana Alta Gioielleria (High Jewelry) inaugurated its first collection in Taormina in 2012. Ten years after that memorable date, the fashion house has decided to celebrate this precious universe of art, beauty, and knowledge in a book for the first time. The creations of Dolce & Gabbana Alta Gioielleria have always been one-off pieces. While the exceptional quality of gems and diamonds is certified by the most renowned international gemological institutes, the goldsmithery which is carried out entirely by hand in the brand s workshops by skilled goldsmiths reinterprets highly refined processes, such as milgrain, filigree, and twisted wire. It embodies an extraordinary heritage of tradition and know-how, forging material to transform it into a work of art. Miniatures, enamels, corals, and marvelous gems from the most important deposits in the world and magnificent diamonds, some of which are characterized by the unprecedented Dolce & Gabbana cut, are the absolute stars of this volume. Edited by Carol Woolton, it reveals the unique creations of Dolce & Gabbana Alta Gioielleria to the general public for the first time.

For its 175th anniversary, Constantin Wild, great-grandson of the company’s founder, has been out on the trail of history. Book SynopsisThe art of metalworking has been practiced continuously ll over the world. In this, the Islamic world is no exception. But if we look at the objects unearthed at archaeological digs or in the museums and private collections that have patiently collected them over the centuries, one cannot help but be surprised by the almost infinite quantity of materials, shapes and decorations created both by renowned artists and anonymous craftsmen. Metalworking is a highly important and characteristic sector of Islamic art, and the diffusion of these works in contexts other than where they originated is highly significant evidence of this fact. There can be no doubt that these artefacts were produced by a highly-advanced and structured society whose boundaries and remarkable technical expertise we are still unable to place in wider contexts, most notably historical and social. Prof. Giovanni Curatola took the objects in the Aron Collection as a cue for a meticulous comparative study of medieval Islamic metalwork, making this book a fundamental addition to the literature on the subject.

Beautiful Creatures depicts some of the most spectacular beasts ever transformed into sparkling treasures and accompanies a forthcoming special exhibition in the American Museum of Natural History's Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals. The 120 pieces featured date from the mid-1800s to the present, representing species from the realms of land, air, and water. Gorgeous studio photography of the jewelry is complemented by images of iconic personalities, including ElTrade Review"The subtitle to Beautiful Creatures is Jewelry Inspired by The Animal Kingdom, but prepare yourself to see some of the most spectacular jewelry ever produced whose jumping off point was anything from a simple scallop shell or butterfly to some of the most incredible jungle inhabitants...The images are staggering, with accompanying text that offers you as much as you need to know as well as baiting you to want to see these pieces in the flesh, so to speak... This is a book for the jewelry aficionado as well for those who might have a passing interest in everything from ornithology to entomology to herpetology to batrachology to simple seashells. In other words, there are few creatures that have not been memorialized by these créateurs and incredibly gifted and skilled craftsmen. Get in line, wait for the opening of the exhibit at the Museum of Natural History, and get lost in the grandiosity of it all. In the meantime, you can be teased with the jaw dropping content of this book." — NEW YORK JOURNAL OF BOOKS "Founder of the online jewelry magazine The Adventurine, Marion Fasel is a jewelry historian and author. Her latest book, Beautiful Creatures: Jewelry Inspired by the Animal Kingdom, just dropped, and spectacular beasts transformed into sparkling treasures? Thrilling. Marion took the time out of her busy book-release schedule to answer our jewelry fan questions." — MEETTHEJEWELERS.COM"From Cartier’s iconic panthers to Bulgari’s snakes and JAR’s butterflies, some of the most imaginative designs by the world’s great jewelry houses and artisans take inspiration from the animal kingdom, creating spectacular objects dripping with precious stones to conjure wearable art. Beautiful Creatures: Jewelry Inspired by the Animal Kingdom depicts some of the most spectacular beasts ever transformed into sparkling treasures..." — ANTIQUES AND THE ARTS WEEKLY "Beautiful Creatures by Marion Fasel is smaller than the typical coffee table book, which means it’s more portable and affordable too. But still utterly gorgeous: this would make a fantastic gift for a jewelry lover or animal aficionado in your life." — DIAMONDS IN THE LIBRARY.COM "Fasel showcases the incredible creativity and diversity of animal-themed jewels and takes us through the history of influences and cultural shifts of the last 150 years....This menagerie of precious creatures is organised into the different habitats in which they dwell and is peppered with amusing and insightful gems of jewellery knowledge." — THEJEWELLERYEDITOR.COM "Beastly Bling: Jewelry in the shape of an animal often comes with extra meanings, writes historian Marion Fasel in her new book “Beautiful Creatures: Jewelry Inspired by the Animal Kingdom” (Rizzoli Electa). When Prince Albert got engaged to Queen Victoria in 1839, he gave her a gold engagement ring in the form of a circling snake, to symbolize everlasting love. This set off a snake-jewelry fad, illustrated in the book by a circa-1850 French snake bracelet made of emeralds, diamonds, silver and gold, with pink sapphires for the eyes. Animal jewelry can also carry a political charge. In the early 20th century, American suffragists were nicknamed Iron Butterflies in honor of their determination, and many wore small butterfly pins to signal their support of the movement. More frivolous highlights among the book’s 120 pieces are a starfish designed by Salvador Dalí and a zebra bracelet from American designer David Webb, who also made pieces that look like lions, fish and tortoises. A brooch in the form of a jellyfish, made of moonstones, sapphires, diamonds, gold and platinum, was designed by Tiffany’s Jean Schlumberger to help heiress and art collector Bunny Mellon recover from a jellyfish sting in 1967." —WALL STREET JOURNAL "Admirers of Marion Fasel’s The Adventurine have plenty to enjoy in her newest book, a knowing look at the animal kingdom depicted in gemstones and gold. In this friendly, intelligent romp through creatures that crawl, swim and fly, Marion pays homage to many-a-gilded creatures from renowned houses such as Cartier and Schlumberger, as well as anonymous makers throughout history. This darling book was done in association with New York’s American Museum of Natural History to mark the refurbished Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals. Marion’s choices are smart and fun, and include many of jewelry’s most iconic creatures." —NATURAL DIAMOND COUNCIL

Book SynopsisDiamond jewelry has long been symbolic of political power and authority in Europe. This book focuses on the individuals who commissioned and wore extraordinarily precious diamond ornaments from the mid-14th century until the democratization' of diamonds that followed the opening of mines in South Africa in 1867. This enthralling story covers seven centuries of history, showing the way in which rulers such as Charles V of France, Queen Elizabeth I of Great Britain, Louis XIV of France and Catherine II of Russia used diamond jewelry to reinforce their power and authority. As works of art, these precious creations mirror the successive styles of each period late Gothic naturalism, the culture of the Renaissance, Baroque splendour, Rococo elegance and the Imperial grandeur of the First and Second Napoleonic Empires. The recurring themes religion, sentiment, heraldry, military glory, miniatures and cameo portraiture are reinterpreted by each generation of jewelers. Like royal dress, diamond jewelry was worn to dazzle and impress at weddings, coronations, christenings and state visits and was presented as gifts reflecting princely generosity. Over the centuries, these displays proved remarkably successful as instruments of government, symbolizing the pride and glory of a nation. Arranged chronologically, Diamond Jewelry includes some legendary masterpieces of diamond jewelry.
