Book SynopsisThe modern chasm between "secular" work and "sacred" worship has had a devastating impact on Western Christianity. Drawing on years of research, ministry, and leadership experience, Kaemingk and Willson explain why Sunday morning worship and Monday morning work desperately need to inform and impact one another. Together they engage in a rich biblical, theological, and historical exploration of the deep and life-giving connections between labor and liturgy. In so doing, Kaemingk and Willson offer new ways in which Christian communities can live seamless lives of work and worship.Table of ContentsContentsForeword by Nicholas WolterstorffIntroductionPart 1: Foundations1. Red Wheel/Weiser A Book of Pagan Prayer

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSteeped in tradition - "Those of us who call ourselves Pagan owe a debt to all those who came before us" - and based on more than a quarter century of research and practice, A BOOK OF PAGAN PRAYER teaches us to pray in the ways of our ancestors for very modern times and concerns. Changes to this revised edition include rearranged chapters and prayers and the addition of two new chapters, all of which make the book easier to use. The chapters are now arranged in an order that follows a ritual and all the litanies have been moved to their appropriate chapters. Two new chapters - "General Requests and Offerings" and "Travel, Protection, Imprecatory" - combine two types of prayers out of the general "Petitions" into one. Prayers have been labelled with the deities to which they are addressed and arranged in logical order within each chapter. Prayers to new deities have, also, been added. In addition, prayers for Lughnasadh/Lammas and Midsummer, two of the eight great neo-pagan holidays, have been added.A unique collection of nearly 500 prayers written to fulfil the needs of contemporary pagans from a variety of traditions, A BOOK OF PAGAN PRAYER is a book to turn to again and again.

Book SynopsisNo more boring Seders! One chapter a year is all you need. A guide to help you invigorate your Seder, create lively discussions, and make personal connections with the Exodus story today. For many people, the act of simply reading the Haggadah no longer fulfills the Passover Seder's purpose: to help you feel as if you personally had gone out of Egypt. Too often, the ritual meal has become predictable, boring, and uninspiring. Creating Lively Passover Seders is an innovative, interactive guide to help encourage fresh perspectives and lively dialogue. This intriguing Haggadah companion offers thematic discussion topics, text study ideas, activities, and readings that come alive in the traditional group setting of the Passover Seder. Each activity and discussion idea aims to: Deepen your understanding of the Haggadah Provide new opportunities for engaging the themes of the Passover festival, including interactive readings and bibliodrama Develop familiarity with the Exodus story, as well as the life and times of the people who shaped the development of the Haggadah Reliving the Exodus is not about remembering an event long ago, but about participating in a conversation that provides hope and strength for the struggle to make tomorrow a brighter day. With this complete resource, you can create more meaningful encounters with Jewish values, traditions, and texts that lead well beyond the Seder itself.

  • Encountering God: El Rachum V'chanun—God Merciful

Jewish Lights Publishing Encountering God: El Rachum V'chanun—God Merciful

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIt is time to recover rabbinic lessons of late antiquity: God is a God of grace and love; human beings can aspire to goodness and promise; on Yom Kippur the two of them meetGod''s love energizes human potential and the world is reborn with hope restored. The God of Jewish tradition is far from the strict God of justice commonly understood to be the God of the Hebrew Bible. God's self-introduction to Moses atop Mount Sinai does indeed conclude with the image of punishment throughout the generations but begins with "God merciful and gracious," the imagery that finds its way into rabbinic liturgy and lore as solely the God of grace and compassion, pardon and love.To arrive at this selective perception of biblical tradition, the Rabbis of the Talmud deliberately misread the biblical text, and then fashioned a myth of God who dresses up as a leader of prayer and promises pardon if Israel will only repeat these merciful attributes as part of its prayer ritual on that day. Ever since, the Thirteen Attributesas the list comes to be knownbecomes central to Jewish prayer, accompanying the liturgy for holidays generally, and framing the opening and closing services of the holiest day in the Jewish year, Yom Kippur, the Day of Judgment itself. In this seventh volume in the Prayers of Awe Series, contributorsmen and women, rabbis and laypeople, scholars and artists from across the spectrum of Jewish life, and representing the US, Israel, the UK, Germany, France, Canada, and Australiachart the importance of these Thirteen Attributes of God. They explore the kind of God Jews meet in prayer and the consequent self-reflection about the human condition that Judaism recommends on the basis of its idealized image of God as, above all, merciful and gracious.

  • The Closing of the Gates: N'ilah

Jewish Lights Publishing The Closing of the Gates: N'ilah

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisN?ilah, ?the closing of the gates? is, in many ways, the most anticipated worship service in the entire Jewish calendar. Coming at the end of the 24-hour fast that characterizes Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement), it symbolizes the days of old when the gates of the ancient Temple closed at last, and with them, the last chance for prayers of atonement and reconciliation with God and with others. Nowadays, the synagogue service that replaced the Temple cult marks the occasion with heightened fervor: the only time all year when the gates of the ark that houses the Torah scroll remain open throughout the service; telltale melodies accompany the occasion; a final blast of the shofar (the ram?s horn) symbolizes the end of the fast and the new beginning that follows; special prayers celebrate the human capacity to create a life that matters beyond our own mortality -- and the presence of God who ?reaches out a hand? to invite us into the new Jewish year that N?ilah?s final shofar blast inaugurates. All of this is the topic for volume eight in ?Prayers of Awe,? the series devoted to exploring the depth of the Jewish High Holy Days. As with prior volumes, this one too comes with introductory essays on the history, theology, and deeper meaning behind the prayer experience. It then assembles some 40 short and accessible essays designed to unlock the mystery and depth of the occasion. Authors come from all walks of life ? clergy and laypeople, scholars and artists, men and women across the generations ? and from seven countries (Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Israel, the UK and USA).What music appreciation is to classical music, this series on prayer is to Jewish worship. This volume, in particular, explores Judaism?s timeless message of divine purpose and the ongoing search for meaning in a world of human frailty but also promise.

  • Passover Haggadah for Christians

St Augustine's Press Passover Haggadah for Christians

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOver the past few decades an increasing number of Christians have sought to celebrate the Last Supper, which was a Passover seder, as a way of better understanding Easter. Several Passover haggadahs aimed at Christians are presently on the market. But all have sought to celebrate the Passover outside of the context of the Old Testament itself. The seders resulting from using these haggadahs are rewrites of the authentic haggadahs and do not recapture either the usage that the Jewish people have experienced throughout the ages or the Last Supper that Jesus celebrated with his Disciples. Yet the authentic seder is greatly to be preferred, because it includes the historic context of the Last Supper and, consequently, the real base for understanding Easter. In A Passover Haggadah for Christians, Bruce Fingerhut, president of St. Augustine’s Press, presents a haggadah for a Passover seder similar to the one that Jesus Himself celebrated. And it presents a commentary that shows the important divergences that Jesus presented in the Last Supper (e.g., washing the feet of the Disciples, leaving the room for Gethsemene after the third cup of wine, speaking of his betrayal in terms of the one who dips his bread with Him, and, of course, presenting Himself as the bread and wine of the celebration). By employing a complete and authentic seder service, A Passover Haggadah for Christians allows participants to discover for themselves the great preparation that the Last Supper, a Passover seder, was for Easter and to take in the beauty, inspiration, and “flavor” of Passover on their own terms, and not simply as an event on the way to a final position already foreseen, as a looking at the past with the eye of the future. But the service itself is so bountifully important and prescient for Christians, the little “aha moments” that one gets by being led by the hand become “AHA MOMENTS” when one is given the actual words Jesus spoke, has seen the significance of it in light of His own life, and participates in the service as a disciple. A Passover Haggadah for Christians comes complete with full explanations of the celebration itself and their meaning for Easter, Biblical references, facing Hebrew and, for the main prayers said by all, transliteration of the Hebrew, a glossary, and musical scores. In fact, a Jewish family could use A Passover Haggadah for Christians by ignoring the Christian explanation (which is in color) for the seder itself, but reading it at a later time. By doing so, they would understand a great deal about Christianity too. After all, our ignorance of one another goes both ways.

Book SynopsisSoon after Pope Paul VI promulgated Sacrosanctum Concilium more than forty-five years ago, a small group of liturgy specialists replaced the liturgical reforms mandated by Sacrosanctum Concilium with a more secular liturgy. As a result, most Catholics are unfamiliar with the document's actual direction. The contributors to this volume seek to restore those elements of worship lost to these secular interpretations, such as the sacred music, art and architecture, scripture and liturgical translation, and the relation of the liturgy to the mission of the Church.
