Inner Traditions Bear and Company The Fourteen Holy Helpers: Invocations for
Book SynopsisA step-by-step guide to calling on the Fourteen Holy Helpers for healing, success, guidance, and love • Shares modern updated versions of the medieval prayers of the Holy Helpers, one prayer for each of the 14 saints and one prayer to call on all of them together • Explains how, even though these 14 saints are connected to Catholic belief, they are universal in their powers of assistance and will come to the aid of anyone who calls on them • Recommends a healing stone to enhance the effect of each prayer and explains how to use the prayers to create protective amulets for you and your home and write a letter of invocation for love and success The art of invocation--calling on spirits and higher forces for assistance--has been practiced in folk magic traditions for centuries, with roots going back to early pagan and shamanic times. Called on for more than 1,000 years, the Fourteen Holy Helpers are a group of Catholic saints venerated together because their intercession has been shown to be particularly effective in difficult times. Although they are part of the Christian tradition, these spiritual helpers are universal in their powers of assistance and will come to the aid of anyone who calls on them. In this guide to invoking the Fourteen Holy Helpers, Christiane Stamm presents modern updated versions of the medieval prayers of the Holy Helpers, which were transmitted to her directly from the spirit world. She explains how, even though these 14 saints are connected to Catholic belief, their invoked powers connect to the original energies dwelling within humans and the Earth and calling on them works as a form of natural magic. She shares short biographies of each saint and details how to access their powers of healing and protection through writing out and reciting their specific prayers during the full moon. The author shares 15 prayers--one for each Holy Helper, used to support healing for specific ailments or issues, and one prayer that is especially powerful because it calls on all 14 Helpers together. For each prayer she recommends a healing stone that can be added to further enhance the effect. The author also explains how to use the prayers to create protective amulets for you and your home and write a letter of invocation for love and success. Offering a step-by-step method to call for spiritual assistance, this book helps us realize the profound power of prayer and belief and reveals how magic still exists in our modern world.Table of ContentsMy mission Do you want to be healthy? Church House Publishing Stations of the Resurrection: Encounters with the
Book SynopsisThe New Testament gospel writers record nineteen resurrection appearances, from the first encounter with Mary Magdalene on Easter morning to Paul’s life-changing experience on the Damascus road. Stations of the Resurrection offers reflections on each of these episodes from the bestselling poet Malcolm Guite and the much admired writer and bishop, Guli Francis-Dehqani, accompanied by colour illustrations from the priest-artist Iain McKillop. Bishop Guli draws on her first hand knowledge of Middle Eastern culture to explore these stories and Malcolm Guite offers a sonnet in response to each of them – many published here for the first time - with reflections on the texts that inspired them. This imaginative and inspirational resource also includes the complete Stations of the Resurrection liturgies from Common Worship Times and Seasons that commemorate each of the nineteen events, allowing the book to be used for both personal devotional use and liturgical celebration.

Book SynopsisOur Father is the God of all comfort, the God who strengthens us, the God who sustains us - but He is also the God who forgives us. Understanding our sin and understanding the magnificence of our King and LORD go hand in hand. From the Book of Common Prayer to Bible verses to contemporary teachers, Confessions of Sin and Assurances of Pardon contains 100 prayers to lead and focus your mind on the problem of sin and God's answer of salvation. Use this resource to enrich Bible studies, devotionals, family worship, or even church services.Trade ReviewJesus taught us in the model Lord's Prayer to cry out to God to forgive our sins and give us a heart of forgiveness toward others. Worship that includes regular prayers of confession forms in us a life of repentance. I commend this work where Pastor Griffith has gathered a wealth of prayers from the rich history of the church and from the present day as well. -- Mark L. Dalbey (President, Covenant Theological Seminary, Creve Coeur, Missouri)In whatever venue it is used, the goal is to draw worshipers to the throne of grace to find grace to help in time of need; that together they may entreat, "Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, Bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, Redeemer of the world, grant us peace. Amen" (11). I highly recommend this book for ministers, worship leaders, men, women, girls and boys. -- Michael PhilliberConfessions of Sin and Assurances of Pardon: A Pocket Resource is a user-friendly guide to the invaluable and oft-neglected practice of confession, and it is a great help to congregations and individuals looking to draw close to God. -- John Sowers (Author and President of The Mentoring Project)Confessions of Sin and Assurances of Pardon is, in large part, a collection of excerpts from various Christian traditions, and is an outstanding resource - especially for pastors and those who craft liturgy - to connect their worship communities to the broader Church. I highly recommend this book, and plan to use it liberally in my own context. -- Scott Sauls (Senior pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee and author of 'Jesus Outside the Lines' and 'Befriend')

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Sacramentary of Ratoldus (Paris, Bibliothèque
Book SynopsisEdition of complex and important early liturgical work. The highly complex combined sacramentary and pontifical presented here, preserved as Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, lat. 12052, was apparently written to the order of Ratoldus, abbot of Corbie (d. 986), but in fact has along and complicated history. The sacramentary descends from a book compiled at Saint-Denis, later augmented with material relating to Dol (in Brittany) and Arras, while the pontifical, such as it is, descends in large part froma book drawn up for Oda, archbishop of Canterbury (941-58). Moreover, late-tenth and eleventh-century additions show that Corbie was merely the last link in a fascinating and sometimes puzzling chain. The work is thus of considerable importance to scholars and this edition, with introduction, will be warmly welcomed. Dr NICHOLAS ORCHARD is Deputy Slide Librarian at the Courtauld Institute of Art.Trade ReviewThe introduction is full of rich and thought-provoking details, which cast new light not just on Ratoldus but on the wider liturgical history of both northern France and England in the tenth-century. The edition which follows is exemplary. * JOURNAL OF ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY *

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Ordinal of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity,
Book SynopsisSecond of two-volume edition of twelfth-century Ordinal from Fécamp, giving a detailed view of monastic liturgy. The abbey of Fécamp, reformed in the early years of the eleventh century by William of Volpiano, abbot of St-Bénigne at Dijon, was a key institution in the development of Norman monasticism in the middle ages. As one of the most energetic monastic reformers of his time, William was noted for the attention he paid to the liturgy of the many abbeys he superintended, and his liturgical cursus was influential in English and continental monastic houses. The Fécamp Ordinal, edited here from a manuscript of the early thirteenth century, but transmitting the liturgy observed in the abbey some two centuries earlier, is the first complete source of William's liturgical work tobe printed. It is expanded by readings from complementary Fécamp service books, creating a text which gives a particularly detailed view of medieval monastic liturgy. The first volume contains the Temporale; this volume contains the remainder of the Ordinal (Sanctorale, Commune Sanctorum and Miscellanea), together with comprehensive indexes. DAVID CHADD teaches in the School of Music at the University of East Anglia.Trade ReviewInvaluable in promoting a deeper understanding of monastic life in [medieval] Normandy. JNL OF ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY One of the most important publications of its kind to have appeared in recent years, [it] assumes a central place in the study of monastic liturgical practice in the Middle Ages.... The result is a sort of super-ordinal hardly, if ever, matched in one medieval manuscript alone. And it is all managed with perfect clarity.... This edition shows that the study of medieval liturgical books is in safe and expert hands. Without doubt [the author] deserves our most sincere congratulations. * PLAINSONG & MEDIEVAL MUSIC *

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Leofric Missal: I. Introduction, Collation
Book SynopsisNew edition of, and commentary on, one of the most important liturgical books to have come down to us from the late Anglo-Saxon church. Oxford, Bodleian Library, Bodley 579, the so-called 'Leofric Missal', is for the most part not really a missal, but a late-ninth or early-tenth-century combined sacramentary, pontifical and ritual with cues for the sung parts of various masses by the original, possibly French or Lotharingian, scribe. Subsequently, over the course of a hundred and thirty or so years, the sacramentary-pontifical-ritual was considerably augmented, first most probably for thesuccessors of Plegmund, archbishop of Canterbury (890-923), the man for whom it was probably originally compiled, then later at Exeter for Bishop Leofric (1050-72).Trade ReviewA work of tremendous intelligence and discrimination.... An excellent edition and an extremely persuasive account of a complex but central document. * SPECULUM *

Canterbury Press Norwich The Spirit of Witness: Liturgies, prayers, poems
Book SynopsisThe term ‘witness’ has become synonymous with evangelism, but true witnessing is usually found in dissenting: it refuses to bow to idols, or to take the easy road, or deny Christ and all he died for. This collection is rooted in that belief that having the mind of Christ means we will do things differently. It offers practical resources for pastoral care that celebrates people on the margins of the church, and provides liturgies for those who suffer racism or injustice, who experience tragedy and loss, who raise their voices in protest or lament, and more. These texts do not carry the stamp of approval of any church body, but will bring the light of the gospel where it is needed. Arranged in six sections, it includes contributions from well-known and new voices covering the themes of: • Witness in Ordinary Time • Communion • Birth and Baptism • United in Love • Suffering Presence • Death and Resurrection

Messenger Publications A Calvary Covenant: The Stations of the Cross
Book SynopsisThe Stations of the Cross unfold for us a story of the passion and pain – where all sources of evil are connected: jealousy, betrayal, cowardice, injustice, cruelty and weakness. Jesus takes everything on himself and assumes all human suffering. The Stations of the Cross are in the present tense: Jesus is condemned, Jesus takes his Cross, Jesus meets, Simon carries, Veronica wipes and Jesus is stripped. It is our tears that flow down his cheek, our pain that is felt in his bruised, battered body. The Stations of the Cross is a prayer in motion. They spell out for us that suffering and death do not have the last word because God cares for all creation.

Messenger Publications Occasional Prayers for the School Year
Book SynopsisThe book is intended for busy teachers, chaplains or anyone who often reaches for a prayer or service, but finds themselves grabbing material from many different sources. The author has worked a Jesuit school for over 20 years, where school gatherings are common and are always prefaced with prayer. She has regularly searched for and written different prayers to suit moments in the school year, to suit a moment in time. Sometimes she had time to prepare and other times, she found herself running along corridors to pull something from her files or turning to the internet while the bell was ringing! She often wished she had a book under her arm that she could trust would always have something to suit. So she put her prayers together as a "go to" for people who lead prayer, who provide calm and stillness for others but may have felt frantic in ‘finding the right piece.’ She has also included a couple of poems from young people as an example of how they continue to inspire her. Messenger Publications Our Wounded God: Beyond, Beside and Within Us
Book SynopsisThe Stations of the Cross etch a story of pain and humiliation in the life of Jesus. There are parallels closer to home as well as across our world, be it in Ukraine, Nicaragua, Iraq or Pakistan that are ‘twinned’ with Gethsemane and Golgotha. This book invites us on a journey as we discern and dialogue for new horizons of gospel service as a church on a Synod path. We are part of a body that is greater than our own individual bodies. We have hearts and souls. Through Baptism, the Eucharist, the shared commitment of our resources, the living out of radical forgiveness, the inclusive service of compassion to all and the willingness to make sacrifices with the lowest, the least and the lost will lead us to be called the ‘body of Christ.’ This book invites you to consider, if as a church, we are part of the un-noticed, the un-recognised and the forgotten that makes us feel their pain and humiliation. This book helps us to discover the paschal (‘pass over’) significance of the cross as a response to the suffering that sears many lives today. Here we can embody the words of Jesus: ‘This is my body given for you.’ Through this proclamation, we can call ourselves the Church. This book sees Jesus as the guardian of the wounded and the tortured. It invites us, like Simon of Cyrene and Veronica to embrace and caress the open wounds that scar innocent lives. The Stations of the Cross lead us, like the Centurion who pierces the side of Christ, to recognise divinity at the heart of humanity.Trade Review‘a rich, if eclectic, source of rare sensitivity, astute insight and hope-filled companionship...’ * The Pastoral Review *

Messenger Publications Journeying to the Light: Daily Readings through
Book SynopsisJourneying to the Light is intended to be read daily through the period from Advent Sunday to the Epiphany. It is largely based upon one of the Eucharistic readings each day. There are variations, and it can be adapted to be used whatever the length of Advent, and for individual or group use. The author weaves contemporary trends with biblical themes and with events of his own life. It has at its heart the Incarnation; anticipated by the prophets; joyfully experienced through the words of Luke, and proclaimed to the nations through the visit of the Magi, as recorded by Matthew. The author is an Anglican priest, but as this book is based upon the the Revised Common Lectionary, it is ecumenical in its reach, as many of the readings coincide with those appointed for both the daily Mass in Roman Catholic Churches and in Anglican Churches. Equally, the daily reflections, may be of use to all individuals who are seeking to establish a regular period of contemplation and space through Advent and Christmas, which is traditionally full of distraction and busyness. Bishop Brendan Leahy is joined by Archbishop John McDowell of the Church of Ireland in commending the book for our use, and two Church of England bishops add their voices to suggest that a deepening of our reflection, throughout these days of joyous hope, helps us to seek further the source of the light that was coming to humanity, that is Jesus, son of Mary, redeemer of the world. A Church-goer, a seeker after truth or, quite possibly in these tumultuous days, a Christian soul whose path has become darkened or distracted in recent years will find some thing in these pages to encourage them beyond written texts of any kind to set their eyes towards the light and their heart to the divine.Trade Review‘a light touch, balancing profound commentary with personal anecdote’ * Search Journal *‘Filled with striking insights based on experience, this is a book to buy, read and, in time, reread.’ * The Irish Catholic *‘What a genuinely lovely thing this is. Wild Goose Publications The Road Chosen: Poems, stories and reflections
Book SynopsisJesus unflinchingly walked the road that he had chosen, knowing its cost. In our lives we find ourselves on roads not always of our choosing, often puzzling, sometimes full of light when faith seems easy, sometimes darkened and troubled. As we journey through the events of Holy Week we find Jesus sharing that human perplexity and struggle, always fully engaged, determined to accompany us on the journey that lies ahead, giving us confidence to pray and act for the needs of those close to us and for the needs of the world. Janet Killeen uses a variety of perspectives to get close to the events of Holy Week. Some of the events are far from holy: treacherous, hostile and increasingly isolating for the Man at their heart, who comes to us in his isolation, in confrontation and rejection, in the sorrow and anguish he experienced, so that we might never be alone. Janet Killeen studied English and American literature, and taught in a London comprehensive school for over thirty-five years. She has published poems, short stories and two novels, and is a regular contributor to Wild Goose books.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd A Liturgical Play for the Medieval Feast of
Book SynopsisA newly identified medieval play for the Feast of Fools, with a new English translation and musical edition ready for performance. Scholars and non-scholars alike have long been fascinated by the medieval "Feast of Fools", the annual celebration on or around the New Year that came to be known for its inversion of established hierarchies, its boisterousness, and its scurrilous, even sacrilegious, clerical behaviour. However, we now know that many of the most obscene and subversive practices associated with the feast were, in fact, the misunderstandings, exaggerations, or even fabrications of overzealous ecclesiastical reformers. Our most reliable information about the Feast comes from the scant extant liturgical items that clerical communities actually used during their celebrations. This book shows that the twelfth-century Ordo Joseph from Laon, in France - a play long-known to scholars, telling the story of Joseph the patriarch and his brothers -- is in fact a drama for the Feast of Fools, long hidden in plain sight, intended for performance at Epiphany. It situates the play within the context of the cathedral community's history of biblical exegesis under its school-master Anselm of Laon, proposing "performative gloss" as an important new tool for understanding how medieval liturgical dramas generated meaning. It Includes a new Latin edition of the text, accompanied by an English translation, as well as a musical reconstruction that harnesses the music of Laon's liturgy and finally makes possible a performance of this spectacular, newly identified Feast of Fools drama.Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Notes on the Text List of Abbreviations Introduction: A New Play for the Feast of Fools Part I: Study 1: The Ordo Joseph in Context 2: The Scriptures and the Staging 3: The Joseph Story as Model and Reversal 4: Anti-Jewish Sentiment and the Passion Part II: Text, Music, and Commentary Text and Translation The Music of the Ordo Joseph Notes and Commentary Bibliography Index

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Women's Books of Hours in Medieval England
Book SynopsisEnglish translation of a variety of texts from women's books of hours, with introduction, notes, and an interpretive essay. The book of hours is said to have been the most popular book owned by the laity in the later middle ages. Women were often patrons or owners of such books, which were usually illustrated: indeed, the earliest surviving exemplar made in England was designed and illustrated by William de Brailes in Oxford in the mid-thirteenth century, for an unknown young lady whom he portrayed in the book several times. This volume brings together a selection of texts taken from books of hours known to have been owned by women. While some will be familiar from bibles or prayer-books, others have to be sought in specialist publications, often embedded in other material, and a few have not until now been available at all in modern editions or translations. The texts are complemented by an introduction setting the book of hours in its context, an interpretive essay, glossary and annotated bibliography.Trade ReviewHas something of interest to those interested in women writers [.] is also a helpful text for those interested in medieval women readers. * YEAR'S WORK IN ENGLISH STUDIES *
