Book SynopsisCharles Haddon Spurgeon was passionate about congregational worship. Arising from devout affection, the frustration he found while using the the compilations of hymns available in his day, spurred him to compile this selection of hymns for use in his congregation. Over 1,000 psalms, hymns and spiritual songs include not only direct praise, but doctrine, experience and exhortation, enabling the saints to edify one another in their singing. Cross–references to Spurgeon’s other works ensure that this will be a valuable addition to any library. This beautiful gift edition includes a foreword by Spurgeon scholar Tom Nettles added Spurgeon essay ‘How Shall We Sing?’ elegant hardback cloth bound cover Trade ReviewPersons frequently ask me how to get started reading poetry. Reading the rich texts found in this hymnal is a pretty good way to learn how to read and enjoy poetry, but it is an even better way to feed your soul with these beautiful Psalms and hymns. -- Jim Scott Orrick (Professor of Literature and Culture, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)

  • St Augustine's Press Passover Haggadah for Christians

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisOver the past few decades an increasing number of Christians have sought to celebrate the Last Supper, which was a Passover seder, as a way of better understanding Easter. Several Passover haggadahs aimed at Christians are presently on the market. But all have sought to celebrate the Passover outside of the context of the Old Testament itself. The seders resulting from using these haggadahs are rewrites of the authentic haggadahs and do not recapture either the usage that the Jewish people have experienced throughout the ages or the Last Supper that Jesus celebrated with his Disciples. Yet the authentic seder is greatly to be preferred, because it includes the historic context of the Last Supper and, consequently, the real base for understanding Easter. In A Passover Haggadah for Christians, Bruce Fingerhut, president of St. Augustine’s Press, presents a haggadah for a Passover seder similar to the one that Jesus Himself celebrated. And it presents a commentary that shows the important divergences that Jesus presented in the Last Supper (e.g., washing the feet of the Disciples, leaving the room for Gethsemene after the third cup of wine, speaking of his betrayal in terms of the one who dips his bread with Him, and, of course, presenting Himself as the bread and wine of the celebration). By employing a complete and authentic seder service, A Passover Haggadah for Christians allows participants to discover for themselves the great preparation that the Last Supper, a Passover seder, was for Easter and to take in the beauty, inspiration, and “flavor” of Passover on their own terms, and not simply as an event on the way to a final position already foreseen, as a looking at the past with the eye of the future. But the service itself is so bountifully important and prescient for Christians, the little “aha moments” that one gets by being led by the hand become “AHA MOMENTS” when one is given the actual words Jesus spoke, has seen the significance of it in light of His own life, and participates in the service as a disciple. A Passover Haggadah for Christians comes complete with full explanations of the celebration itself and their meaning for Easter, Biblical references, facing Hebrew and, for the main prayers said by all, transliteration of the Hebrew, a glossary, and musical scores. In fact, a Jewish family could use A Passover Haggadah for Christians by ignoring the Christian explanation (which is in color) for the seder itself, but reading it at a later time. By doing so, they would understand a great deal about Christianity too. After all, our ignorance of one another goes both ways.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisSoon after Pope Paul VI promulgated Sacrosanctum Concilium more than forty-five years ago, a small group of liturgy specialists replaced the liturgical reforms mandated by Sacrosanctum Concilium with a more secular liturgy. As a result, most Catholics are unfamiliar with the document's actual direction. The contributors to this volume seek to restore those elements of worship lost to these secular interpretations, such as the sacred music, art and architecture, scripture and liturgical translation, and the relation of the liturgy to the mission of the Church.

Book SynopsisThe book is intended for busy teachers, chaplains or anyone who often reaches for a prayer or service, but finds themselves grabbing material from many different sources. The author has worked a Jesuit school for over 20 years, where school gatherings are common and are always prefaced with prayer. She has regularly searched for and written different prayers to suit moments in the school year, to suit a moment in time. Sometimes she had time to prepare and other times, she found herself running along corridors to pull something from her files or turning to the internet while the bell was ringing! She often wished she had a book under her arm that she could trust would always have something to suit. So she put her prayers together as a "go to" for people who lead prayer, who provide calm and stillness for others but may have felt frantic in ‘finding the right piece.’ She has also included a couple of poems from young people as an example of how they continue to inspire her. • Our Wounded God: Beyond, Beside and Within Us

Messenger Publications Our Wounded God: Beyond, Beside and Within Us

Book SynopsisThe Stations of the Cross etch a story of pain and humiliation in the life of Jesus. There are parallels closer to home as well as across our world, be it in Ukraine, Nicaragua, Iraq or Pakistan that are ‘twinned’ with Gethsemane and Golgotha. This book invites us on a journey as we discern and dialogue for new horizons of gospel service as a church on a Synod path. We are part of a body that is greater than our own individual bodies. We have hearts and souls. Through Baptism, the Eucharist, the shared commitment of our resources, the living out of radical forgiveness, the inclusive service of compassion to all and the willingness to make sacrifices with the lowest, the least and the lost will lead us to be called the ‘body of Christ.’ This book invites you to consider, if as a church, we are part of the un-noticed, the un-recognised and the forgotten that makes us feel their pain and humiliation. This book helps us to discover the paschal (‘pass over’) significance of the cross as a response to the suffering that sears many lives today. Here we can embody the words of Jesus: ‘This is my body given for you.’ Through this proclamation, we can call ourselves the Church. This book sees Jesus as the guardian of the wounded and the tortured. It invites us, like Simon of Cyrene and Veronica to embrace and caress the open wounds that scar innocent lives. The Stations of the Cross lead us, like the Centurion who pierces the side of Christ, to recognise divinity at the heart of humanity.Trade Review‘a rich, if eclectic, source of rare sensitivity, astute insight and hope-filled companionship...’ * The Pastoral Review *

Book SynopsisEinander ins Bild setzen.
