Prayers and liturgical material Books
Liturgical Press OnceAndComing Spirit at Pentecost
Book Synopsis Father Brown completes his look at the great seasons of the liturgical year, making the rich insights of modern biblical exegesis conveniently available to all, with this volume for the season from Easter to Pentecost. During this season the Church reads consecutively from the Acts of the Apostles, recounting the external life of the Church after Pentecost. The accompanying readings from the Gospel according to John portray the internal life of Christian disciples and promise a coming Paraclete to be sent by the Father. Father Brown''s title A Once-and-Coming Spirit signifies these two great biblical sources that he reflects on. He shows how these readings speak to our time as we live out the external history of a visible Church while internally drawing life from Jesus as branches on the vine. His comments offer an opportunity to appreciate the intent of the season after Easter and to prepare ourselves for the intensified gift of the spirit at Pentecost. Trade ReviewHomilists, liturgists, and those who draw inspiration for their prayer from the lectionary texts will appreciate this concise set of reflections on the liturgical readings from Easter to Pentecost. The Bible TodayStudded with insights that are spring-boards to reflection or discussion. The Pecos Benedictine. . . an excellent book for spiritual reading during this season and, given the thrust of the book, it could also prove useful for a college level course or a serious adult education group focusing on the church.Emmanuel

Canterbury Press Norwich The Spirit of Witness: Liturgies, prayers, poems
Book SynopsisThe term ‘witness’ has become synonymous with evangelism, but true witnessing is usually found in dissenting: it refuses to bow to idols, or to take the easy road, or deny Christ and all he died for. This collection is rooted in that belief that having the mind of Christ means we will do things differently. It offers practical resources for pastoral care that celebrates people on the margins of the church, and provides liturgies for those who suffer racism or injustice, who experience tragedy and loss, who raise their voices in protest or lament, and more. These texts do not carry the stamp of approval of any church body, but will bring the light of the gospel where it is needed. Arranged in six sections, it includes contributions from well-known and new voices covering the themes of: • Witness in Ordinary Time • Communion • Birth and Baptism • United in Love • Suffering Presence • Death and Resurrection

Wild Goose Publications Known Unknowns: 100 contemporary texts to common
Book SynopsisSinging a new song is not an optional extra, but a faithful response to a divine command. This command is the opening phrase of Psalms 96 and 98. And, St John the Divine says, this is what the saints in heaven are doing all the time. But, on earth, things are not so easy. Sometimes it's because the latest new song in the old hymnbook is two centuries old. Or the congregation has been told by some sadist that it doesn't sing well'. Or sometimes the organist can only play what s/he hears on the radio. Or the guitarist can do anything, as long as it's only three major chords. However, even in such dire straits, the divine command has to be obeyed. So what if we kept familiar tunes hymn tunes or folk tunes and set words to them in 21st-century idioms? What if we gave some ancient psalms a makeover, replaced threadbare wedding and funeral songs or dealt with the things that people actually talk about when they're not in church? And what if most of the suggested tunes were so well known that even if musicians took the huff people could still sing the verses on their own? What if you looked under the covers of this book and began to upset the quiet of the place in which you are presently standing by beginning to hum? This book amounts to a modest proposal from the Wild Goose Resource Group on how to make the most of minimal congregational song resources in an accessible and resilient way.

Academic Studies Press Siddur Hatefillah: The Jewish Prayer Book.
Book SynopsisHebrew University Professor Emeritus and Israel Prize recipient Eliezer Schweid (1929-2022) is widely regarded as one of the greatest historians of Jewish thought of our era. In Siddur Hatefillah, he probes the Jewish prayer book as a reflection of Judaism's unity and continuity as a unique spiritual entity; and as the most popular, most uttered, and internalized text of the Jewish people. Schweid explores texts which process religious philosophical teaching into the language of prayer, and/or express philosophical ideas in prayer’s special language – which the worshipper reflects upon in order to direct prayer, and through which flows hoped-for feedback. With the addition of historical, philological, and literary contexts, the study provides the reader with first-time access to the comprehensive meaning of Jewish prayer—filling a vacuum in both the experience and scholarship of Jewish worship.Table of ContentsTranslator’s AcknowledgementsTranslator’s Introduction: Eliezer Schweid as Worshipper in the State of IsraelAuthor’s Preface: My Path to the Jewish Prayer Book (Siddur Hatefillah)Introduction: The Siddur (Jewish Prayer Book): Its Sources, Goal, and Theological Basis Worship of God and the Process of the Sacred Congregation’s Formation and Expression Prayer as a Form of Primal Expression of the Human Soul Torah and Prayer: The Problem of Love and Sin in the Relations between God and the Human Being The “Name and Kingship” Blessing as the Fundamental Rubric of Standing before God in Prayer Establishing the Covenant of Faith between the Individual Human Being and His God Principles of Faith Keriyat Shema—Covenant of Love between God and His People The Poetics of the Shema and the Shemoneh Esrei The Shemoneh Esrei Prayer: The Kedushah (Sanctification) and Ḥaninat Hada’at (God as Giver of Knowledge) The Shemoneh Esrei Prayer—Requests by the Individual in the Assembly: Teshuvah (Repentance) and Forgiveness The Shemoneh Esrei Prayer: Redemption, Healing, and Livelihood The Shemoneh Esrei (Eighteen Benedictions) That Are Really Nineteen: Redemption from Deepening Exile The Shemoneh Esrei—Responding in Anticipation of Complete Redemption Types of Biblical Poetry as a Source of Prayer Between the Poetry of Prophecy and Prayer The Poetry of the Psalms: Personal-Soulful and Societal-Political Messages Hymnal Song for the Sabbath Day. Boydell & Brewer Ltd A Liturgical Play for the Medieval Feast of
Book SynopsisA newly identified medieval play for the Feast of Fools, with a new English translation and musical edition ready for performance. Scholars and non-scholars alike have long been fascinated by the medieval "Feast of Fools", the annual celebration on or around the New Year that came to be known for its inversion of established hierarchies, its boisterousness, and its scurrilous, even sacrilegious, clerical behaviour. However, we now know that many of the most obscene and subversive practices associated with the feast were, in fact, the misunderstandings, exaggerations, or even fabrications of overzealous ecclesiastical reformers. Our most reliable information about the Feast comes from the scant extant liturgical items that clerical communities actually used during their celebrations. This book shows that the twelfth-century Ordo Joseph from Laon, in France - a play long-known to scholars, telling the story of Joseph the patriarch and his brothers -- is in fact a drama for the Feast of Fools, long hidden in plain sight, intended for performance at Epiphany. It situates the play within the context of the cathedral community's history of biblical exegesis under its school-master Anselm of Laon, proposing "performative gloss" as an important new tool for understanding how medieval liturgical dramas generated meaning. It Includes a new Latin edition of the text, accompanied by an English translation, as well as a musical reconstruction that harnesses the music of Laon's liturgy and finally makes possible a performance of this spectacular, newly identified Feast of Fools drama.Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Notes on the Text List of Abbreviations Introduction: A New Play for the Feast of Fools Part I: Study 1: The Ordo Joseph in Context 2: The Scriptures and the Staging 3: The Joseph Story as Model and Reversal 4: Anti-Jewish Sentiment and the Passion Part II: Text, Music, and Commentary Text and Translation The Music of the Ordo Joseph Notes and Commentary Bibliography Index

Boydell & Brewer Ltd 'Charms', Liturgies, and Secret Rites in Early
Book SynopsisA re-evaluation of the mysterious "charms" found in Anglo-Saxon literature, arguing for their place in mainstream Christian rites. Since its inception in the nineteenth century, the genre of Anglo-Saxon charms has drawn the attention of many scholars and appealed to enthusiasts of magic, paganism, and popular religion. Their Christian nature has been widely acknowledged in recent years, but their position within mainstream liturgical traditions has not yet been fully recognised. In this book, Ciaran Arthur undertakes a wide-ranging investigation of the genre to better understand how early English ecclesiastics perceived these rituals and why they included them in manuscripts were written in high-status minsters. Evidence from the entire corpus of Old English, various surviving manuscript sources, and rich Christian theological traditions suggests that contemporary scribes and compilers did not perceive "charms" as anything other than Christian rituals that belonged to diverse, mainstream liturgical practices. The book thus challenges the notion that there was any such thing as an Anglo-Saxon "charm", and offers alternative interpretations of these texts as creative para-liturgical rituals or liturgical rites, which testify to the diversity of early medieval English Christianity. When considered in their contemporary ecclesiastical and philosophical contexts, even the most enigmatic rituals, previously dismissed as mere "gibberish", begin to emerge as secret, deliberately obscured texts with hidden spiritual meaning.Trade ReviewThe book represents a major advance to our knowledge about Anglo-Saxon ritual practice, for Arthur's study permits us now to take charms and secret writing seriously as much for their theological and devotional depth as for their popular significance. Rare is the event - and to be celebrated - when one comes across a book that opens up an entire genre for new appreciation -- EARLY MEDIEVAL EUROPECiaran Arthur's overview of this fascinating corpus of literature, with each example scrutinized in its manuscript context and set against the background of a learned Latinate tradition, contributes much to our understanding of the relations between magic and liturgy in late Anglo-Saxon England. * SPECULUM *Scholars and students of Anglo-Saxon England will find this book an invaluable re-assessment of many of the Anglo-Saxon texts that have been labelled `charms', and it will also interest scholars concerned with folklore more generally. * ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW *Provocative and erudite [its] arguments are consistently stimulating, discerning, and persuasive. This book makes a major contribution to knowledge, as it sheds an enormous amount of light on the least well-understood corpus of writings from Anglo-Saxon England. * ANGLIA *[F]or researchers focusing on the belief systems of early medieval England, or of early medieval Europe more broadly, this must be very strongly recommended. Any university library with a collection on medieval religion needs to obtain a copy. * READING RELIGION *Table of ContentsIntroduction Kill or Cure: Anglo-Saxon Understandings of Galdor By the Power Vested in Me: Galdor in Authorised Rituals Ite Missa Est: The Liturgical Nature of 'Charms' Crops and Robbers: A Case Study of the Vitellius Psalter In the Beginning Was the Letter: The Cosmological Power of 'Gibberish' Conclusion Bibliography
