  • A Multidisciplinary Approach to Capability in Age

Springer Nature Switzerland AG A Multidisciplinary Approach to Capability in Age

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book provides insight on how to interpret capability in ageing – one’s individual ability to perform actions in order to reach goals one has reason to value – from a multidisciplinary approach. With for the first time in history there being more people in the world aged 60 years and over than there are children below the age of 5, the book describes this demographic trends as well as the large global challenges and important societal implications this will have such as a worldwide increase in the number of persons affected with dementia, and in the ratio of retired persons to those still in the labor market. Through contributions from many different research areas, it discussed how capability depends on interactions between the individual (e.g. health, genetics, personality, intellectual capacity), environment (e.g. family, friends, home, work place), and society (e.g. political decisions, ageism, historical period). The final chapter summarizes the differences and similarities in these contributions. As such this book provides an interesting read for students, teachers and researchers at different levels and from different fields interested in capability and multidisciplinary research.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Microsimulation Population Projections with SAS: A Reference Guide

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book provides a step-by-step overview on how to build a microsimulation model with SAS. It shows how to convert an already existing multistate projection by age, sex, education and region into a microsimulation model. Two new dimensions are then added, either the labor force participation and the sector of activity, and/or some examples of outputs and alternative scenarios that would not be possible with standard demographic methods. The book also describes how to adapt the model for other countries or other purposes. It also provides details on how to extend and adapt the model for other purposes as well as other use of microsimulation with SAS. The book suggests codes that are easy to understand, so they can be replicated or adapted for other purposes. As such, this book provides a great resource for people with beginner to intermediate knowledge in SAS.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Introduction.- Chapter 2. Getting Started.- Chapter 3. Converting a Cohort Component Model into a Microsimulation Model.- Chapter 4. Adding New Dimensions.- Chapter 5. Building Alternative Scenarios.- Chapter 6. • Towards Bayesian Model-Based Demography: Agency,

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Towards Bayesian Model-Based Demography: Agency,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book presents a ground-breaking approach to developing micro-foundations for demography and migration studies. It offers a unique and novel methodology for creating empirically grounded agent-based models of international migration – one of the most uncertain population processes and a top-priority policy area. The book discusses in detail the process of building a simulation model of migration, based on a population of intelligent, cognitive agents, their networks and institutions, all interacting with one another. The proposed model-based approach integrates behavioural and social theory with formal modelling, by embedding the interdisciplinary modelling process within a wider inductive framework based on the Bayesian statistical reasoning. Principles of uncertainty quantification are used to devise innovative computer-based simulations, and to learn about modelling the simulated individuals and the way they make decisions. The identified knowledge gaps are subsequently filled with information from dedicated laboratory experiments on cognitive aspects of human decision-making under uncertainty. In this way, the models are built iteratively, from the bottom up, filling an important epistemological gap in migration studies, and social sciences more broadly.Trade Review“The material collected by Jakub Bijak and his team constitutes a valuable resource for scholars interested in modelling individual decisions, not necessarily restricted to migration processes. … Researchers who already gained some experience in social simulation will receive many inspirations for improving their own research and rise to the next level. In this way, this book has the potential to advance the art of modelling in the social sciences.” (Thomas Fent, European Journal of Population, Vol. 38, 2022)Table of ContentsPart I: Preliminaries: Chapter 1. Introduction.- Chapter 2. Uncertainty and complexity: towards model-based demography.- Part II: Elements of the modelling process.- Chapter 3. • Decline and Prosper!: Changing Global Birth Rates

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Decline and Prosper!: Changing Global Birth Rates

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisGlobally, women are having half as many children as they had just fifty years ago. Why have birth rates fallen, and how will low fertility affect our shared future? In Decline and Prosper!, demographic expert Vegard Skirbekk offers readers an accessible, comprehensive and evidence-based overview of human reproduction. Readers learn about the evolution of childbearing across different populations and how fertility is related to (changes in) our reproductive capacity, contraception, education, religion, partnering, policies, economics, assisted reproduction, and catastrophes. Readers will explore the future of family size and its impact on human welfare, women’s empowerment and the environment. Skirbekk argues that low fertility is on the whole a good thing, while recognizing the challenges of population aging and “coincidental” childlessness. A balanced, integrative examination of one of the most important issues of our time, Decline and Prosper! drives home the fact that we must ultimately adapt to a world with fewer children. The book will be invaluable to anyone who is interested in the far-reaching effects of global fertility, including researchers and students of demography, social statistics, medical sociologists, family and childhood studies, human geographers, sociology of culture, social and public policy.Trade Review“This book assembles many findings, facts, insights, and opinions related to fertility … . The book is easy to read … .” (Nico Keilman, Journal of Peace Research, March 1, 2023)“Dr. Skirbekk’s prescriptions could help ameliorate some problems young men are experiencing throughout the developed world.” (Jessica Grose, The New York Times, nytimes.com, February 15, 2023)“Vegard Skirbekk’s Decline and Prosper! Changing Global Birth Rates and the Advantages of Fewer Children is a welcome reality check. … ‘… the breadth of this book is, in fact, its great strength.’ And with this, I wholeheartedly agree. Decline and Prosper! is a concise and engaging overview of what we know about low fertility, how we got there, and why it will almost surely persist. And, ultimately, that things will be fine.” (Joshua Wilde, Population and Development Review, September 14, 2022)“It is a valuable resource, presenting much research on fertility around the world. … I recommend it to anyone interested in human fertility and demography.” (Frank Götmark, overpopulation-project.com, September 6, 2022)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Measuring Fertility.- How Many Children Can Humans Have Biologically?.- Fertility from the Dawn of Humanity through the 19th Century.- The Demographic Transition: Fewer Deaths and Fewer Births, Eventually.-Contemporary Global Fertility. The New Have-Nots: Childlessness in the 21st Century.- More Education, Fewer Children.- An Era of Choice: Childbearing Has Become More Planned.- Fertility Preferences: How Many Children Do People Want?.- Delaying Parenthood, For Better and For Worse.- Finding a Mate: Contemporary Partnership and Conception.- Money Matters: The Economics of Fertility.- Fertility in the Aftermath of Disaster.- New Times, Old Beliefs: Religion and Contemporary Fertility.- Contemporary Fertility from an Evolutionary Perspective: Are the Fittest Still Surviving?.- How Low Will It Go? Book SynopsisThis volume explores generational differences in alcohol consumption practices and examines the changing role of alcohol across the life course. It considers generational patterns in where, how and why people buy and consume alcohol and how these may interact with identity and belonging and considers how drinking alcohol in adolescence, adulthood, middle-age or later life takes on different functions, meanings and tensions. Alcohol is shown to play an important role in biographical transitions, such as in the coming of age rituals that mark the passage from adolescences to adulthood, whilst drinking alcohol in adulthood and in later life takes on new meanings, pleasures and risks in light of shifting roles and responsibilities relating to work, leisure and the family. The empirically-informed contributions draw on a range of diverse disciplinary backgrounds and a range of cultural contexts provides a nuanced examination of the role of alcohol at different life course stages and explores both continuity and change between generations.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Alcohol, Age, Generation and the Life Course.Part I: Alcohol, Generations and Social Change.- From Abiding to Accelerating to Anomic: Generational Waves of Change in Irish Drinking Culture, 1845-Present.Realities or Mythologies: England’s rural pubs and the life course.Biographical and Generational Perspectives on Drinking in a Mediterranean Culture.‘I Would Never Dream of Drinking on a Lunch Hour, But…’: Intergenerational changes in attitude towards alcohol consumption.Part II: Alcohol, Youth and Adolescence.- Alcohol Use, Age, and (In)Appropriateness: Young adults’ conceptions and performances of ‘age’ in contexts of alcohol use.If You Can’t Beat Them, You Join Them’: Peer pressure and drinking to belong among Nigerian youths.Shifting Conceptions of Moderation, Risk and Danger amongst Non-Drinking University Students in the UK: A Case Study of Hyper-Moderation.Part III: Alcohol in Adulthood.- Blackening the Bride and Stripping the Stag: The Role of alcohol, gender and age in prenuptial wedding rituals.Female Drunkenness and the Life Course in Victorian Lancashire.De-Gendering Alcohol through Food Pairing: Women’s Shifting Position as Culinary Consumers in Japan.‘There’s nothing classy about a drunk 40-year-old’: Drinking biographies and ‘sobriety stories’ amongst women who stop drinking in midlife and beyond.Part IV: Alcohol in Later Life.- Alcohol Use, Its Meaning and Impact in Older AgeAlcohol Consumption in Older Drinkers and Its Links to “Successful Ageing”‘I Don’t Drink Much Now ‘cos I’m Old’: The Life-course and changing drinking practices among older male adults in Nigeria.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines how COVID-19 has often enhanced social and economic marginalisation in different places and societies around the world. It explores the reality that selective deglobalisation is occurring and over and above the human tragedy which has been experienced, many societies and economies have had to adapt to the new reality which they find themselves in. Governments have been challenged to improve health care and provide economic relief and stimulus packages to sectors as diverse as tourism and education which have had to develop new ways of coping. Resilience theory is drawn on to help explain some of the creative responses which we observe, while in other places deep-rooted concerns for the future are a stark reality. By describing how the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing geographic, social and economic marginalisation, particularly for the most vulnerable places, societies and economic activities globally, this book provides insight into the impacts and implications across the world and reflects on the different experiences. Springer International Publishing AG Opening up the Debate on the Aging Society:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book documents, verifies and brings to life the issues and debates that are created around the aging society. It carefully offers a series of opinions that attempt to illuminate the fact that the aging society goes beyond aging and includes a series of changes in terms of family, social ties, relationships, and the way human beings perceive society. The book contributes substantially to the discussion of this new type of aging, the new types of families, and the new types of relationships, as well as in the application of cutting-edge analytical strategies to understand the trends and patterns of these new modes of social structures. The book includes detailed perspectives on how decisions need to be made, mindsets need to be changed, and precautions need to be taken to positively deal with these new realities. The evidence presented in this book suggests that if this does not happen, the danger of thanato-politics appears, which, denying reality, will lead humanity into difficult labyrinths, perhaps without any "Ariadne's thread" that will allow a glimpse of the way out. The translation from Spanish to English was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Note about the methodological and conceptual use of this book.- Chapter 2. Book SynopsisIs death inevitable? Until now, the history of mankind has been marked by this fatal fact. Religions, borders and progress are born from an ancient fear of death, comfort from this fear man often found only in religious paradigms. But according to José Luis Cordeiro and David Wood, the incontrovertible fact of death is no longer an absolute certainty - science and technology are preparing to tear down the final frontier: that of immortality. This accessible book provides insight into recent exponential advances in artificial intelligence, tissue regeneration, stem cell treatment, organ printing, cryopreservation, and genetic therapies that, for the first time in human history, offer a realistic chance to solve the problem of the aging of the human body. In this book, Cordeiro and Wood not only present all the major developments, initiatives, and ideas for eternal life, they also show why there are a number of good arguments for seeing death for what it is: the last undefeated disease.Enter any drugstore or bookstore, and we confronted with a mountain of nonsense concerning the aging process. Society seems obsessed with aging. That is why The Death of Death is such a refreshing delight, able to cut through the hype and reveal a balanced, authoritative, and lucid discussion of this controversial topic. It summarizes the astonishing breakthroughs made recently in revealing how science may one day conquer the aging process.Michio Kaku, theoretical physicist and author of The God Equation: The Quest for a Theory of Everything We are entering a Fantastic Voyage into life extension, crossing different bridges that will take us to indefinite life spans. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe U.S. government conducts a population census every 10 years, adds up the counts by geographic location, and uses the resulting numbers in formulas to allocate seats in the House of Representative and Electoral College, and to make public funding and tax decisions. It has served as an essential tool of representative democracy since 1790. The raw data from the census also serve as a decennial snapshot of the nation, a very long list, organized by household, ideally of all people resident on census day, with additional information on the name, age, race, sex, geographic location, and other characteristics for each individual. Americans recognized early in their history that the raw data, the list, could serve additional governmental functions, and over the centuries, erected guardrails to prevent improper use. They are encapsulated in the presidential proclamations announcing the upcoming census. The information collected from individual households is for aggregated use only, and cannot be used for the “taxation, regulation, or investigation” of individual persons or businesses. Americans have heeded the call to “stand up and be counted.” They also engage in an ongoing conversation to make sure that the information is used properly and ethically, that the census serves as a tool of representative democracy and advances the rights – including human rights -- of all Americans. The record, however, reveals that there have been failures to meet this goal and that as a result the information provided by the responding public sometimes has been misused, causing considerable harm to vulnerable individuals, groups and entities. Today, as governments and social media are suspect for their exploitation of data about individuals, the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry in the United States during World War II provides a chilling example of such misuse of census data. This book reveals how census officials stepped beyond their normal roles as unobtrusive monitors of American demographic life and helped justify and administer the relocation and incarceration program. Census officials mobilized the substantial administrative and technical resources of the 1940 census, to map the neighbourhoods where Japanese-Americans lived, and planned their systematic removal. The officials then built “census-like” data systems to track the “evacuees” for the duration of the war, monitor their lives in the camps, and certify which “loyal” evacuees might be released from the camps for military or civilian service. After the war, census officials drafted an official history of their activities, but did not publish it. This book has lessons for policy makers and ordinary Americans alike, as we confront the new digital world in which we live. And it speaks to two of the great issues of our time: distrust in the institutions of government and the victimization of minorities.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Introduction.- Chapter 2. Book SynopsisThis open access handbook examines the phenomenon of South-South migration and its relationship to inequality in the Global South, where at least a third of all international migration takes place. Drawing on contributions from nearly 70 leading migration scholars, mainly from the Global South, the handbook challenges dominant conceptualisations of migration, offering new perspectives and insights that can inform theoretical and policy understandings and unlock migration’s development potential. The handbook is divided into four parts, each highlighting often overlooked mobility patterns within and between regions of the Global South, as well as the inequalities faced by those who move. Key cross-cutting themes include gender, race, poverty and income inequality, migration decision making, intermediaries, remittances, technology, climate change, food security and migration governance. The handbook is an indispensable resource on South-South migration and inequality for academics, researchers, postgraduates and development practitioners.Table of ContentsChapter 1 South-South Migration, Inequality and Development: An IntroductionHeaven Crawley and Joseph Teye PART I Conceptualising South-South Migration Chapter 2 The Enduring Impacts of Slavery: An Historical Perspective on South-South Migration Veronica Fynn Bruey and Heaven Crawley Chapter 3 Recentering the South in Studies of Migration Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh Chapter 4 Writing the Camp Yousif M. Book SynopsisThere are many detailed accounts of nineteenth-century emigrants, of their journeys and settlements abroad – but what of those they left behind? This book delves into the heart of Georgian Britain to explore the role that the men and women of the Scottish Borders played in the mass emigration of the early nineteenth century. Although most never departed themselves, their perceptions of wealth, poverty, morality and community shaped the flow of emigrants from the rural south to the wide and expanding British Empire, as well as its North American rival, the United States. Scouring the records of grand estates, humble Kirks, flamboyant newspapers and family correspondences, the author returns the Scottish Borders to the centre of Scotland’s agricultural, industrial and demographic revolutions. Standing on the sharp edge of rural transformation, the Borders played both archetype and exception, pioneering the way from a regional past to an imperial future.Table of ContentsContents: Finding a Place for Sending Communities – The Myth of Clearance – Poverty and the Promise of Emigration – The Established Church v.

Book SynopsisOver the last two decades, globalisation has accelerated international migration flows, particularly of skilled labour. Yet increasing migration by skilled workers from developing countries («brain drain») has raised serious concerns internationally about the adverse development impact on their countries of origin. This book, however, highlights the positive aspects of skilled labour migration as scientific diasporas are playing a growing role in the transfer of technology, skills and knowledge («brain gain») to their home countries. This is a very significant development in a globalised world where science, technology and knowledge can trigger economic and social transformations. The book presents solid empirical evidence of the contributions scientific diasporas make to their countries of origin, based on primary surveys of skilled migrants from Colombia, India and South Africa employed in Switzerland, a major destination country. The findings lead to a better understanding of the motives for migration, the profile of the scientific diaspora communities in Switzerland, and the varied ways in which they help their home countries. The book makes a significant contribution to the international policy debate and dialogue on migration and development. In particular, it shows how to leverage the potential of scientific diasporas as agents of home country development, by identifying good practices and offering specific recommendations for the countries of origin and of destination.Table of ContentsContents: Gabriela Tejada/Jean-Claude Bolay: Foreword – Jean-Baptiste Meyer: Preface – Jean-Claude Bolay: North-South Scientific Cooperation: a Challenge for Sustainable Development – Marie-Claire Caloz-Tschopp: Scientific Diasporas, Migration and Development. • The Republic and the Riots: Exploring Urban

Peter Lang AG, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften The Republic and the Riots: Exploring Urban

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn 2005, the deaths of two teenagers in Clichy-sous-Bois provoked three weeks of rioting in French banlieues. Cars were burned, buildings were damaged and young people clashed with the police in unprecedented scenes of violence. The government declared a state of emergency as the riots spread across France. Two years later, the French public were met with familiar images when riots broke out in the Parisian suburb of Villiers-le-Bel. What were the underlying causes of these episodes of extreme violence? What did the riots signify? What do they tell us about French society? This book takes the reader inside the world of the banlieues and explores the nature and causes of the riots. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork conducted in Villiers-le-Bel, the author offers a unique insight into the motivating factors behind the violence. On a larger scale, the book examines the relationship between the underprivileged suburbs and the French republican model. The author explores a triad of interconnections: between republican ideals and the reality of daily life in the banlieues; between national projections of unity and localized realities of disunity; and between figures of authority and ordinary citizens.Trade Review«In contrast to the many security-orientated interpretations that dominated political and media discourse on the riots, this is the first English-language study that penetrates to the underlying social, political and even ideological factors that help explain those violent events. Through meticulous fieldwork and an impressive grasp of the history of immigration in France and its social consequences, Moran elucidates how the links between immigration, identity and citizenship have been used and sometimes misused in dominant political discourse, and how the ideology of French republicanism has not kept pace with the evolution of French society. This is an illuminating book that constitutes a much-needed corrective to the stock interpretations of the riots.» (Professor G.G. Raymond, University of Bristol) «In this extremely captivating and well-written book, Matthew Moran asks whether the riots of 2005-2007 represented an outright rejection of French society and its underlying republican values, or constituted a desperate plea for social inclusion by the hundreds of people involved. [...] This highly compelling volume (...) succeeds both in deftly relating the recent French riot to what Moran calls the modern ‘blind spot of French republicanism’ and in elucidating on variations in the propensity to engage in urban disorder.» (David Waddington, Modern & Contemporary France April 2012) «The book provides an extremely useful insight into the social, political, ideological and religious netherworld of a French society that is experiencing serious fractures on its housing estates.» (PBo, Bulletin Quotidien Europe 18/9/2012)Table of ContentsContents: Detailed analysis of the riots and their interpretation – Exploration of the notion of French republicanism and the relationship between this abstract concept and the reality of the banlieues – Examination of the evolution of the French banlieues and the challenges facing these areas – Case study of Villiers-le-Bel based on qualitative fieldwork – Macro-analysis of republican ideology and its representation as well as pragmatic interaction with people involved in the riots on both sides.

Book SynopsisThis book seeks to investigate gender differences in final year undergraduates’ employment expectations of their starting jobs, including salary, occupational and working region expectations, and to identify factors that have contributed to gender differences in these expectations. It employs an on-site self-completion questionnaire survey and a follow-up semi-structured interview carried out in a university in Central China. The study adopts the conceptual perspective of ‘choice and constraint’, which means that male and female final year undergraduates are able to make their own choices towards employment expectations; however, their choices of employment expectations are limited by a number of constraints. Empirical studies find that there are gender differences in employment expectations. This study further reveals the influence of gendered economic roles, experienced or perceived sex discrimination in China’s graduate labour market job preferences and parents’ expectations on those gender differences in employment expectations.Table of ContentsContents: Background of the Study – Review of the Relevant Literature and Theories – Research Design and Methodology – Gender Differences in Final Year Undergraduates’ Salary Expectations – Gender Differences in Final Year Undergraduates’ Occupational Expectations – Gender Differences in Final Year Undergraduates’ Working Region Expectations – Discussion and Conclusion.

Book SynopsisItaly is one of the most recent immigratory destinations in Europe, having long been one of the continent’s most important sources of emigration. Due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean, the Italian peninsula is a crossroads of complex transnational movements and represents a unique and dynamic context for the study of contemporary migration and its representation through the diverse channels of media, literature and film. The product of a two-year interdisciplinary research project into representations of migration to Italy, this volume brings together scholarly contributions from the fields of migration studies, linguistics, media, literature and film studies as well as essays by practitioners and activists. It provides both a multi-faceted snapshot of how diverse representations of immigration capture experiences and affect decision-making dynamics and an in-depth study of how media, literature and cinema contribute to the public perception of migrants within the destination culture.Table of ContentsContents: Marco Binotto: Invaders, Aliens and Criminals: Metaphors and Spaces in the Media Definition of Migration and Security Policies – Marco Bruno: The Journalistic Construction of «Emergenza Lampedusa»: The «Arab Spring» and the «Landings» Issue in Media Representations of Migration – Mahmoud Zidan: The Image of Italy and Immigrants to Italy in the Media: A Destination or Place of Damnation? – Federico Faloppa: Media and Migration: Some Linguistic Reflections – Andrea Pogliano: Framing Migration: News Images and (Meta-)Communicative Messages – Gabriela Jacomella: The Silence of Migrants: The Underrepresentation of Migrant Voices in the Italian Mainstream Media – Anna Meli: Training Journalists on Immigration: Experiences and Reflections – Eugénie Saitta: Ethnicity and Organizational Processes in «Mixed» Media: The Case of Yalla Italia – Grazia Biorci: Beyond Hybridization: Metaphors and New Visions in «Migrant Literature» in Italian – Nora Moll: Narrative Strategies, Literary Imaging and Reflections on Identity: Constructing a Narrative Community in Italy – Emma Bond: «Skin Memories»: Expressions of Corporeality in Recent Trans-national Writing in Italian – Maria Grazia Negro: The Decentred Gaze of Postcolonial Literature on Italians Past and Present – Daniele Comberiati/Linde Luijnenburg: New Postcolonial Art Forms: Timira as Multi-Genre Object Between Cinema and Literature – Derek Duncan: The Postcolonial Afterlife of Primo Levi – Loredana Polezzi: Migrant Writing as (Self-)Translation: The Transnational Trajectory of Giose Rimanelli – Vito Zagarrio: Imagined Journeys: Italian Directors and Immigration – Guido Bonsaver: Accented Voices in Contemporary Italian Cinema – Millicent Marcus: Federico Bondi’s Mar nero: Channelling the Geographic Unconscious – Paolo Russo: Migration Told Through Noir Conventions in La sconosciuta and Gomorra – Alessandro Jedlowski: Nigerian Migrants, Nollywood Videos and the Emergence of an «Anti-Humanitarian» Representation of Migration in Italian Cinema – Áine O’Healy: Witnessing History, Recounting Suffering: The Documentary Project of Andrea Segre – Alessandro Triulzi: Roaming to Rome: Archiving and Filming Migrant Voices in Italy.

Book SynopsisAt the XXIst World Congress of the International Committee of Historical Sciences (ICHS/CISH) in 2010 in Amsterdam, the International Commission for Historical Demography (ICHD) decided to write an overview of its own history. Fifty years had gone by since the CISH XIst World Congress in Stockholm 1960, when historians took the first tentative initiatives to create a wholly new interdisciplinary commission for historical demography, a meeting place for a budding discipline where researchers in letters and science could meet, exchange ideas, cultivate and develop a new field. This book is the outcome of that decision. Demography, past, present and future is a common concern for all inhabitants of this planet. The variation is great, however, with regard to sources, social and political conditions, state of the art, technological development, national and local initiatives. In the course of half a century many changes take place. Keeping abreast of the gigantic streams of information and innovation in the field is demanding, even more so for a discipline with global dimensions and ambitions. The book makes fascinating reading, and preparing it has been a rewarding and thought provoking experience. The thirty-seven articles in the book represent as many different stories.Table of ContentsAntoinette Fauve-Chamoux, Ioan Bolovan and Sølvi Sogner: A Global History of Historical Demography.

Book SynopsisThis book is based on detailed interviews with a group of Irish women who have experienced marital separation. It links the women’s accounts with literature on the values and beliefs about marriage, women and family which were prevalent when they were growing up in Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s. The book chronicles their young adult years, the early stages of their marriages and the events and processes which led to their separations. It explores the women’s emotional reactions at the time of separating, the types of support which they found beneficial and the personal, social and financial consequences of having separated. Although the book is written from a sociological perspective, the combination of theory and practical insights make it accessible to a wide variety of readers. It aims to generate discussion and deepen understanding of an area into which there has been minimal research in Ireland and which poses a range of important questions for future researchers, practitioners and policy-makers.Trade Review«This informative and timely book is an essential sociological study based an the experiences of fourteen women who have been through marital separation in contemporary lreland. lt is a must for all couple's counsellors, relationship and family therapists and anyone interested in how patterns, roles and expectations in marriage are changing.» (Pauline Macey, Eisteach. Covering the years 1970 to 2010, it seeks to address the paucity of research on the British African-Caribbean male experience in leisure and sport as well as on the relationship between «race» and local-level football. The development of the club was intimately connected to wider changes in the social and sporting terrain. Based on a mix of archival and ethnographic research, the book examines the club’s growth over four decades, exploring the attitudes, social realities and identity politics of its African-Caribbean membership and the varying demands and expectations of the wider black community. In doing so, it shows how studies of minority ethnic and local football clubs can shed light on the changing social identities and cultural dynamics of the communities that constitute them.Table of ContentsContents: Combining history and sociology to write «black» sport – Immigration in Britain: Leicester and the first-generation of African-Caribbeans c.1900-1968 – Finding their feet: Grassroots football, Meadebrook Cavaliers and the second-generation black experience in Leicester – From parks team to football club: Social policy, generational change and grassroots football in Leicester – Re-inventing Cavaliers: Recession, modernisation and processes of «respectability» – Questions of «resistance» in local football in Leicester – «Real» solutions for «real» problems? Book SynopsisThis interdisciplinary book brings an empirical evidence that social capital is an important building block in the reintegration processes, migration challenges and economic dynamism of the SEE communities. Such a conclusion opposes the common belief that (re)establishing social relations in a post-ethnic conflict environment is difficult, or sometimes even impossible. These are indeed societies where trust in people and institutions remains low, but it is often replaced with other forms of social capital emerging on a daily basis, within and between different population strata, either formally but often informally. Most people who know the region are aware that formal and state institutions in South-East Europe enjoy very low levels of trust. Nearly everybody loves to point to ethnicity as the causal factor behind every difficulty. The authors of this groundbreaking study explore two basic questions: how do people meet their needs and the needs of others when official institutions do not function? And how do members of different ethnic groups experience the role of others and cross symbolic boundaries? The answers, constructed out of empirical evidence using a variety of methods, point to the crucial importance of social capital as an everyday resource, and to the essential role of ethnic, national, and religious diversity in enhancing people's life chances in an unstable environment. Eric Gordy, Professor of Cultural and Political Sociology, University College London Since Mark Granovetter many of us know that both over-socialised (macro) level, and under-socialised (narrowly individualist) representations of social world may lead to counter-effective policies. We need to focus on the meso level, where social cooperation is the most real and the most productive. That leads us to the concept of social capital. This is something the authors of this book understand very well. Moreover, applying it, they are able to shed light on human behaviour in the context of the two key phenomena of present day Europe: migration and capacity for self-help during the crises. Book SynopsisThe study deals predominantly with basic questions of Historical Demography that have so far not yet been tackled, as no adequate sources seemed to exist, or the effort for digging into these problems seemed outrageous. Many major gaps are filled in this study, based on two types of sources: 14 census-like nominal population listings for 126 parishes of the Zurich countryside, complemented by 52 parishes of adjacent areas, and four reconstituted communities with very early parish books. This allowed coming up with detailed population structures by year of age, sex and marital status for the year 1634, with regional variations. Full, detailed mortality tables by sex and for all ages could be calculated for the period 1634–37, by far the earliest mortality tables worldwide. Mortality during plague epidemics was analysed in detail, too, resulting in the first and only plague mortality table. Model life tables are presented as well, showing a pattern that differs strongly from what has been assumed so far. New insights could also be gained about premarital sex and the importance of remarriages.Table of ContentsIntroduction – Demographic Sources – Births, Marriages, and Deaths – The Population and its Development – Population Structures – Mortality – Population Crises – Longevity and Long-term Developments – Marital Status and Marriage Behavior – Fertility – Conclusions and Outlook

Book SynopsisOnly in France is demography essentially the population science: it is taught at school, newspapers feature the evolution of fertility rates in their headlines and the subject sparks ideological debates in the media. How did demography become a national identity issue? The French exception is attributable to a political history that reached fulcrums during the Second World War under the racist Vichy regime and then after the Liberation, with the development of population policies and the creation of the French National Institute for Demographic Studies (INED). The book is the first to retrace its controversial genesis and analyze its ramifications for the following decades. It shows how theories, institutions and demographic policies developed simultaneously in France. Its reflection on the links between ideologies, science and the state offers a model that could be applied to the history of many other scientific disciplines. Paul-André Rosental’s indispensable study examines the emergence of demography as an autonomous discipline and its association with the state in mid-twentieth-century France. Demography’s success in the immediate post-war years came in part from its dual concern with both "science" and "action," which allowed policy makers to claim both knowledge and expertise in addressing social problems. Rosental’s measured tone hides a provocative argument that should serve as both a model and a foil for others working in the history of the human sciences. Joshua Cole, University of Michigan. Book Synopsis War Hecatomb. International Effects on Public Health, Demography and Mentalities in the 20th Century, offers new insights on the impact of wars (namely, but not exclusively, World War I), by underlining its social and psychological consequences, particularly in public health, demography, and mentalities in different countries. Therefore, it is not just another book on World Wars, since it does not focus primarily on political, diplomatic, military or economic aspects. Instead, the work offers a brand new approach on these wars’ consequences, and especially on the civilizational significance of the Great War of 1914-1918. This original view over societies coping with the aftermath of the two world wars reveals how states and different agents were compelled to act and to face the new post-war reality, bringing to light an innovative social agenda while simultaneously trying to cope with the overwhelming phenomenon of physically and mentally scarred multitudes of veterans and their families. The book focuses on the consequences of conflicts in different perspectives and geographic locations. In twelve chapters, several aspects and effects of wars are analysed through different lens. The book draws on a four-year experimental study of sustainable mixed-use inner-city district development at the site of the former Nordbahnhof railway station, one of Vienna’s largest development areas. The mixed-use scenarios include mobility, care work, zero emissions, the sharing economy, creative clusters, “fair business,” networked services, and urban manufacturing. The goals are to deliver both collective and individual added value for users and to develop innovative buildings in an “urban base” for a long-term mixture of uses. This showcases best practice in sustainable urban planning. Book SynopsisWhat comes to people's minds when they think of security? Is there a relationship between global security threats and local, everyday events that influence our feeling of security? Drawing from telephone interviews of 1'000 Swiss citizens, this work attempts to provide a missing link between the spheres of personal and public security. Based on empirical data and using quantitative statistical methods such as correspondence analysis and logistic regression, security is conceived through the statements of common citizens. What emerges is a fascinating portrait of the different notions of security in contemporary Switzerland.

Book SynopsisAge is a complex cross-cutting notion for at least two reasons: the intricate interweaving of its biological and socio-cultural meanings and its dual significance as both a benchmark in an individual's life course and a foundation for social structure. This book offers new perspectives on age and ageing by combining achievements in the biological sciences and their different applications and interpretations in demography, anthropology, psychology and other pertinent disciplines. Thirty contributors from these various fields revisit the measures and the biological models of ageing, the borderline between normal and pathological ageing, the pertinence of chronological age as a benchmark along the life course, its interrelations with psychological development, with reproductive phases and other life events, the normalizing role ascribed by age classes and the risk of falling into ageism, the cross-cultural diversity and temporal changes of its meanings, the gender divide (real and perceived), as well as the rights that should be enjoyed at each age.

Book SynopsisThis book is a contemporary sociological account of the lives of older people in two different communities in Ireland, one urban and one rural. The book is based on primary research that examined the social and community participation of older people in Rathmore and Rathbeg using both ethnographic and survey approaches. The data presented provides insights into the nature of a community in a rapidly changing society and into older people’s contributions to that community. It points to realms of activity that offer genuine meaning and value in older people’s lives. A model of connectedness is developed in the study that identifies key characteristics and processes involved in sociability and solidarity within neighbourhoods and communities. A typology of ten relational patterns describes the different ways in which older adults may be connected within their communities. The author proposes an explanatory framework for understanding the complex and varied connections between people in communities. The book also demonstrates what older people in Ireland perceive as a good life.Trade Review«Students of Irish culture and society and of older people in Europe will find this book indispensable for developing an understanding of the ageing process in modern-day Ireland.» (Simon Roberts, Ageing & Society)Table of ContentsContents: Living in Rathmore and Rathbeg: An Introduction – Context of Ageing and Old Age in Ireland – Ageing and Social Policies in Ireland – Leisure and Social Activities – The Meaning of Place and Significant Communal Settings – Helping, Volunteering and Religious Practice – Relationships with Family, Friends and Neighbours – Explaining Connectedness in Rathmore and Rathbeg – Community and Friendship – Ageing and Community in Rathmore and Rathbeg: Summary and Conclusions.

Book SynopsisThe author focuses on how development-oriented non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and microfinance institutions (MFIs) are suited to the dual development process of improving the wellbeing and empowerment of the poor and other marginalized peoples (especially women) in Africa and other developing countries, focusing on Uganda. NGOs and MFIs are seen as a third approach (i.e. an alternative to state or market strategies) to achieving sustainable development and poverty reduction. The author discusses the following central issues: rethinking development strategies in Africa as a result of the failure of the state or market to deliver economic growth and poverty reduction, and the rise of the NGO sector to fill the vacuum; clarification of the on-going confusion between MFI performance and impact assessment; the inadequacy of economic reforms in Uganda to benefit the rural agricultural producers; NGOs and MFIs in Uganda as part of the development strategy and their potential to spur development; the commercialization of MFIs and its implications; lessons from successful MFIs in Uganda and globally; and an analysis of how NGOs and MFIs working together with the public and private sectors (in a triple partnership) can achieve sustainable development and poverty reduction in Uganda and other African countries.Trade Review«[…] a thoughtful study sure to provoke debate.» (Professor Gay Seidman, University of Wisconsin-Madison) «This is a book for everyone – academics and policy practitioners alike – who take an interest in […] the next generation of development strategies in Africa […]» (Distinguished Professor Emeritus Goran Hyden, University of Florida) «The book is a must read not only for academics and students working in the field but also for policy makers, aid workers, and business leaders who seek to bring about a positive impact not just for their organizations but for the people affected by their actions.» (Julia Büchele, African Studies Quarterly 13, 2013/4) «This book represents a thoughtful study of Africa’s past, its present development and provokes useful debates on the future paradigms and models for an appropriate and sustainable development of the so-called Dark Continent. The book is, therefore, very useful for academics, professionals, development activists and policy makers taking little or deeper interest in the future of Africa’s development. Even microfinance practitioners can have an overview of how the industry is faring in the continent. For the AU and NEPAD, the book comes as an additional impetus to their efforts of promoting African-led development. Students of African studies will find this book quite rewarding.» (Roland Azibo Balgah, Quarterly Journal of International Agriculture 52, 2013/1)Table of ContentsContents: Rethinking Development Strategies in Africa – Economic Reforms and Development Efforts in Uganda since 1986 to Present – NGOs and MFIs in Uganda: A Grassroots Approach to Development – Microfinance Institutions: Performance and Impact Assessment Reconsidered – Commercialization of MFIs and Sustainability: Positive and Negative Implications – What Works and Why? Book Synopsis Contemporary Jewish identity, integration and acculturation in Europe has become an urgent topic in view of the current wave of antisemitism and reliable research on the present state of Jewish identity is scarce. Lilach Lev Ari has chosen three ethnically diverse communities – Paris, Brussels, and Antwerp – that can shed a light on the identity and acculturation of the Jewish minority in Europe. To understand patterns of social integration of native-born and immigrant Jews in the three host societies she applies the correlational quantitative method and has conducted semi-structured interviews. The study can promote further understanding of Jewish continuity within the non-Jewish host societies in a situation, when there is a concern about the resilience and strength of the Jewish communities vis-à-vis new waves of antisemitism.
