Book SynopsisIn this book, Jabari Evans examines Chicago's controversial Drill rap scene and the always-on nature of social media for these musicians, who are often tasked with maintaining constant connection across multiple platforms in order to both affirm their street authenticity locally and promote themselves to an imagined audience of global Hip-Hop fans. Drawing on empirical studies, ethnographic fieldwork, and prominent members of Chicago's Hip-Hop scene, Evans explores the role of social media as an economic resource supporting artistic labor and the implications, both positive and negative, of relying on these platforms for success. Clout, a term heavily used by Drill rappers, refers to the way their influence on social media is measured according to numeric metrics including likes, views, re-posts, and followers. Ultimately, Evans argues that while Black youth of Drill effectively use Hip-Hop cultural norms to harness the power of clout and gain individual celebrity, this success comes with ambivalence over unwanted surveillance of their private lives and the need to rely on negative stereotypes as central to their identities.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFor many music fans, metal was visual before it was aural. The album artwork that caught one's attention, the t-shirt worn by a friend, or the film that introduced fans to new bands were important to metal culture even before one musical note was heard. Varas-Díaz and Nevárez Araújo explore the visual dimensions of metal music from the specific socio-historic, geographic, and political positionality of Latin America and the Caribbean. They position metal music's visual dimensions as storytelling devices to understand and challenge the legacies of social oppression faced in these parts of the world, a process marked by coloniality. In this context, the visual register of metal music allows creators and consumers to engage in four distinct strategies (i.e., seeing, revealing, inverting, and appearing) as part of what the authors have termed extreme decolonial dialogues. The authors support their position by using a diverse lens to examine a plethora of essential aspects of the visual dimensions of metal music: album artwork, clothing, film, traditional and virtual sites, activist practices, and even their research endeavors, all of which are constituent of metal music's visual culture. You will never see metal music in the same light again.

  • Lexington Books Examining Blank Spaces and the Taylor Swift

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisBlank Space: Taylor Swift and Contingent Identities examines Taylor Swift's art, her public image, and Swiftie fan communities. It features discussions of several Swift songs, with attention to the poetic effects created by their lyrics. The author argues that these songs offer a consistent focus, throughout Swift's career to date, on personal identities that evolve through relationships with particular other people. He shows how in Swift's songs, narrators reflect on how their identities change over timeeven in some cases, over the course of the song. The book builds on this discussion of Swift's art to consider the artist's image, exploring how multiple forces interact to shape this image and give it meaningforces including the artist's management team as well as critics and fans. According to the author, the distinctive characteristics of Swft's art and Swift's public image help to create the unique Swiftie fan communities that have emerged and flourished. The book includes two different studies of Swifties' communication practices, one centering online interactions and the second in-depth interviews with Swifties. It concludes with attention to the implications of Swift's selection as Time magazine's 2023 Person of the Year.

  • Lexington Books Pandemic Playlist

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPandemic Playlist: An Exploration of COVID-inspired Popular Music takes readers back to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the music industry. Focusing on those artists who responded directly to the pandemic with their music, Kevin Farrell explores a selection of songs written and recorded about COVID-19. These songs range from the hilariously tongue-in-cheek to the painfully earnest to the self-righteously angry, coming from musicians obscure, world famous, and up-and-coming. Farrell argues that these songs, both originals and repurposed covers, are best classified by rhetorical approach, rather than musical style, identifying four basic categories of COVID-inspired popular music: the Coronavirus Anthem (Bono's Let Your Love Be Known, Alicia Keys' Good Job), Pandemic Pop (Cardi B and iMarkkeyz's Coronavirus, Curtis Roach and Tyga's Bored in the House), the COVID Cover (Gal Gadot's Imagine, Juvenile's Vax That Thang Up), and Pandemic Protest (Ian Brown's Little Seed Big Tree, Kid Rock's We The People). Through a study of these songs, and many more, this book seeks to understand what the pandemic and the music it inspired can teach us about the previously unimaginable.

  • Lexington Books Conveying Lived Experience through Rock and Pop

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisConveying Lived Experience through Rock and Pop Music Lyrics explores rock and pop music lyrics of the last seventy years to elucidate a broad spectrum of themes about the collective human experience. The opening chapters discuss personal topics, with a first chapter about developing a romantic relationship and a second chapter about breaking up. Subsequently, lyrics describing nostalgia, that is, the longing for the past, as well as those about leaving home, going on the road, and returning home are considered. More social topics are treated in chapters devoted to lyrics about the outsider in society, those experiencing mental illness, and alcohol and drug use. Next, songs of social and political critique are surveyed, followed by an examination of utopian and dystopian lyrics. Finally, rock and pop songs about religious topics are considered, first with a chapter on the use of the prophetic voice, and then with a description of lyrics about hell and the devil, as well as heaven, angels, and God. This broad survey of several hundred songs, using a close reading approach, shows how rock and pop lyrics convey the lived experience of people in contemporary society.

Book SynopsisThe story goes that under the influence of blues and rock and roll, Britain suddenly started making spectacularly great music in the 1960s like some clever, quick learning cultural satellite of America. But Britain's mid twentieth-century pop music explosion didn't happen from a standing start. The reasons something so dazzling and multifaceted appeareed lie deeper than those legendary deliveries of blues records to Liverpool's port and the legacy of music halls. Featuring new discoveries and original insights, Why Britain Rocked: How Rock became Roll and Took over the World argues the Beatles' arrival, which stunned the world, really shouldn't have been surprising at all. From the Celts, Henry VIII, and the Quakers to Ira Aldridge and Paul Robeson, Why Britain Rocked uncovers the unique events and unexpected influences that encouraged British pop to be glorious, crazy, luminous, joyous, profound, melancholic, ferocious, anarchic, witty, smart and wonderful in all its ways.

Book SynopsisWhen LA musicians Russell and Ron Mael moved to Britain in 1973, they hit the pop world as Sparks and looked like Oddballs, even in the context of the Glam Rock movement that made them welcome. Soon defined by their weird and wonderful 1974 single This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us from the Kimono My House album, Sparks went on to release 21 albums over four decades, each record inhabiting a bizarre world of it's own. Their songs were peppered with puns and pop culture nods, as well as nostalgia and jokey images, all mixed up in a kaleidoscope of musical references ranging from rock to glam to disco. Book SynopsisIn this revised edition of his definitive biography of Dolly Parton, Stephen Miller has updated his original book on the superstar. Going behind the larger-than-life image to discover what makes Dolly tick, Miller gets to the core of a remarkable woman from a poor East Tennessee background who made it in the male-dominated world of Sixties Nashville and went on to build a respectable movie career. Talking to Dolly's family members, musicians and producers, the author explores Dolly's private life, including her closely-guarded relationships with her husband of nearly fifty years, Carl Dean, and her lifelong friend Judy Ogle. What emerges is a unique portrait of a strong woman who took control of her life, her music and a successful business career with resolute determination. Dolly loves making jokes at her own expense; perhaps the best joke has been how one of America's great singer-songwriters became a legend by being serious about her music while being frivolous about her image.

'Overgrown adolescent ruffians riffing away through a fog of booze, bed-hopping and fisticuffs [are] well represented here by Neill, but the author also rightly praises the music that established The Faces as the quintessential touring rock 'n' roll band.' Four Stars. Record Collector. 'It's unthinkable that Rod Stewart's much anticipated reminiscences will plunge headlong into the nuanced depths of musical delight and moral depravity as Neill's tome does... rich in detail and behind the scenes yarns.' Book SynopsisThe 306: Dawn is a new piece of music theatre from the National Theatre of Scotland. Based on real events, it charts the heart-breaking journey of three of the three hundred and six British soldiers who were executed for cowardice, desertion and mutiny during World War I (1914-18). 'You are a fucking coward and you will go to the trenches. I give fuck all for my life and I give fuck all for yours and I’ll get you fucking well shot' – Sergeant to Harry Farr. Joseph Byers (17) from Glasgow. Too young to enlist, Joe, like so many at the time, has lied about his age to join the other men at the front. However, his dreams of being a solider are quickly destroyed by the brutal realities of trench warfare and he soon finds himself in trouble with the authorities. Private Harry Farr (25) from London. Traumatised by the things he has seen and lived through as a serving soldier, Harry is suffering from shell shock and is now unable to fight. He has subsequently been convicted of cowardice, and as he waits to hear his fate, he dreams of his wife and hopes for a last minute reprieve. Lance-Sergeant Joseph Willie Stones (24) from Durham. Having used his rifle to block the entrance to a trench during fierce fighting, Joseph stands accused of casting away his arms in combat - an offence punishable by death. He thought he was protecting his men, but the top brass want to make an example of him to maintain discipline in the ranks. With a contemporary score performed live by the Red Note Ensemble, the songs explore the vulnerability and devastation of the battlefields, alongside the inner struggles of the men. Poignant and powerful, The 306: Dawn will be performed in a transformed barn in the Perthshire countryside.Trade ReviewBrilliantly interweaves the everyday with the extraordinary * The Times *
