The University of Chicago Press Say No to the Devil

Book SynopsisWho was the greatest of all American guitarists? You probably didn't name Gary Davis, but many of his musical contemporaries considered him without peer. Bob Dylan called Davis one of the wizards of modern music. Bob Weir of the Grateful Deadwho took lessons with Davisclaimed his musical ability transcended any common notion of a bluesman. And the folklorist Alan Lomax called him one of the really great geniuses of American instrumental music. But you won't find Davis alongside blues legends Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite almost universal renown among his contemporaries, Davis lives today not so much in his own work but through covers of his songs by Dylan, Jackson Browne, and many others, as well as in the untold number of students whose lives he influenced. The first biography of Davis, Say No to the Devil restores the Rev's remarkable story. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with many of Davis's former students, Ian Zack takes readers through Davis's difficult beginning as the blind son of sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South to his decision to become an ordained Baptist minister and his move to New York in the early 1940s, where he scraped out a living singing and preaching on street corners and in storefront churches in Harlem. There, he gained entry into a circle of musicians that included, among many others, Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and Dave Van Ronk. But in spite of his tremendous musical achievements, Davis never gained broad recognition from an American public that wasn't sure what to make of his trademark blend of gospel, ragtime, street preaching, and the blues. His personal life was also fraught, troubled by struggles with alcohol, women, and deteriorating health. Zack chronicles this remarkable figure in American music, helping us to understand how he taught and influenced a generation of musicians.

Book SynopsisCharles Mingus is one of the most important - and most mythologized-composers and performers in jazz history. Classically trained and of mixed race, he was an outspoken innovator as well as a bandleader, composer, producer, and record-label owner. This book tells his story.Trade Review"Will likely long stand as the definitive account of the genius, and enigma, that was this great bassist, bandleader, and composer. Certainly no one has heretofore delved as deeply and thoroughly into what made him tick." W. Royal Stokes Blog "'Better Git It In Your Soul draws the reader to listening to its subject's productions. If already familiar with Mingus' music, a reader may return to favorites with fresh ears and deeper insights... Gabbard's greatest personal contribution to understanding Mingus is his contextualization of events through his own broad, well-informed perspective." DownBeat "Offers several lenses through which to view Mingus and his music-the milieu in which he lived, wrote and played; literary life; closest musical associations; and as a coda his experience in film... There is much in Better Git It In Your Soul to limn one's understanding of and approach to Mingus' tremendous body of work as well as the challenges he faced and orchestrated as a black artist in America." The New York City Jazz Record "This is a wonderful book! This book completely absorbed me... You really took me in with your own emotional palette." NPR/On Point with Tom Ashbrook "An important contribution to not only the study of Charles Mingus but also of the evolution of postwar jazz."-STARRED REVIEW Library Journal "A solid addition to the literature of jazz." Booklist "This isn't simply a new telling of Mingus' life story, although Gabbard does an excellent job of that in just under 100 concise and nicely paced pages. Gabbard also takes a deep dive into specific aspects of Mingus' output. Most notably, he performs forensic work in exploring how Beneath the Underdog came to be." PopMatters "Gabbard examines the musical career of one of the giants of Jazz, Charles Mingus, offering a look at the man beyond his sensationalized musical career and personal mythology." Publishers Weekly "Krin Gabbard uses his own unique perspective to illustrate the famous musician's life and genius." -- Darcy Peters Smooth Jazz News "14 of the Best Gifts for a Music Snob Who's Heard Everything: Krin Gabbard's bio is as idiosyncratic as the great jazz bassist and composer that is its subject. There aren't many places you can go to read comparisons between Mingus and Philip Roth as well as detailed musical analysis of his epochal and hard-swinging compositions." New York Magazine, The Strategist "Gabbard's careful attention to new and underutilized resources and dedication to placing the many dimensions of Mingus's existence in their larger contexts should indeed enhance readers' appreciation of Mingus as a musician, composer, arranger, writer, poet, and bandleader." Book SynopsisA new collection of unseen photographs of New York City's 1970s punk heyday, by one of the icons of the city's golden age of new wave, Blondie's Chris Stein.A new collection of unseen photographs of New York City's 1970s punk heyday, by one of the icons of the city's golden age of music, Blondie's Chris Stein. For the duration of the 1970s - from his days as a student at the School of Visual Arts through the foundation of the era-defining band Blondie and his subsequent reign as epicenter of punk's golden age - Chris Stein kept an unrivaled photographic record of the downtown New York City scene. Following in the footsteps of the successful book Negative, this spectacular new book presents a more personal and more visceral collection of Stein's photographs of the era. The images presented here take readers from self-portraits in his run-down East-Village apartment to candid photographs of pop-cultural icons of the time and evocative shots of New York City streTrade Review"...[It] is a fascinating document, not only of the punk scene of the early and middle 1970s but more generally of New York City in its years of chaos, decay and creative energy." —Luc Sante, New York Times"Although most well-known for his iconic images of Debbie Harry, which were documented in his book Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, Chris Stein’ was shooting plenty of other subjects in 1970s New York City. His new book Point of View collects these often overlooked personal frames into a single place." —Popular Photography"A far cry from the New York that Sinatra extolled, the city as depicted in the photographer and Blondie co-founder Chris Stein’s new book of images from the 1970s and 80s, Point of View: Me, New York City, and the Punk Scene, is certainly rough around the edges." —Art Newspaper "Who better to document the gritty punk heyday of ‘70s NYC than one of its most influential luminaries? Book SynopsisBruce Springsteen might be the quintessential American rock musician but his songs have resonated with fans from all walks of life and from all over the world. This unique collection features reflections from a diverse array of writers who explain what Springsteen means to them and describe how they have been moved, shaped, and challenged by his music. Contributors to Long Walk Home include novelists like Richard Russo, rock critics like Greil Marcus and Gillian Gaar, and other noted Springsteen scholars and fans such as A. O. Scott, Peter Ames Carlin, and Paul Muldoon. They reveal how Springsteen’s albums served as the soundtrack to their lives while also exploring the meaning of his music and the lessons it offers its listeners. The stories in this collection range from the tale of how “Growin’ Up” helped a lonely Indian girl adjust to life in the American South to the saga of a group of young Australians who turned to Born to Run to cope with their country’s 1975 constitutional crisis. These essays examine the big questions at the heart of Springsteen’s music, demonstrating the ways his songs have resonated for millions of listeners for nearly five decades. Commemorating the Boss’s seventieth birthday, Long Walk Home explores Springsteen’s legacy and provides a stirring set of testimonials that illustrate why his music matters.Trade ReviewContributor Lou Maser interview on "One-on-One with Steve Adubato" http://steveadubato.org/bruce-springsteen-s-impact-on-music-history.html— One-on-One with Steve Adubato "E Street Radio" SiriusXM interview with contributors Daniel Wolff Lauren Onkey— E Street Radio - SiriusXM "Local Leaders Never Stop Reading" by Amanda Capps http://www.greenvillebusinessmag.com/2020/03/05/299879/local-leaders-never-stop-reading— Greenville Business Magazine "Springsteen at Seventy," by Wesley Stace https://www.nybooks.com/daily/2019/09/21/springsteen-at-seventy/— New York Review of Books "Long Walk Home endeavors to examine the impact the art and the artist have had on individual people around the world. Book SynopsisA major new contribution to the study of African music, Soweto Blues tells the remarkable story of how jazz became a key part of South Africa's struggle in the 20th century, and provides a fascinating overview of the ongoing links between African and American styles of music.Trade Review"Through interviews with a multi-generational cast of literally hundreds of South African musicians, Gwen Ansell retells a story of political ferment, illegal shebeens, underground music, exile and, ultimately, triumph, while tracing the ongoing development of the music up to the current day. Soweto Blues is both valuable and fascinating, a must-read for serious fans of South-Africa music." - Global Rhythm, October 2004"The value of Ansell's text lies in the thoroughly comprehensive way in which she frames the lives of the South African artists who were brave enough to chant down apartheid." -Jazzwise, Kevin Le Gendre, March 2005"...a hard-hitting discussion of how apartheid impacted the lives of ordinary people and musicians alike-and how struggles against it fostered new roads in music.... Soweto Blues is well researched, intimate, and powerful: a ‘must' for any fan of South African music and history." -Library Bookwatch, 4/05"...a hard-hitting discussion of how apartheid impacted the lives of ordinary people and musicians alike-and how struggles against it fostered new roads in music.... Soweto Blues is well researched, intimate, and powerful: a ‘must' for any fan of South African music and history." -Library Bookwatch, 4/05"Soweto Blues is the book South African jazz lovers have been praying for. The book is conceived to be a useful resource to anyone interested in South African jazz—in South Africa and abroad—with varying levels of knowledge about the music. Soweto Blues was a long time in the making. With luck, it will inspire more people to explore the incredible jazz that has come out of South Africa." -- allaboutjazz.com, January 15, 2006"A comprehensive, informative, and essential companion to South African history. It illuminates the important link between history and culture, and in particular the role of artists in the transformation of South African society. Exquisitely researched and documented, Gwen Ansell's book is a labour of love and a gift to all South Africans."-Barbara Masekela, South African Ambassador to the United States"There's an immense amount of research behind each chapter, but this fascinating history is far from dry. What makes her rich politico-musical opus a joy to read is its anecdotal approach. The author lets the musicians talk [which] brings her pages to life and makes the whole book swing."-ThisDay (Johannesburg) -- Tom Rymour, ThisDay (Johannesburg) * Blurb from reviewer *"This book brings together in powerful co-existence the experiences of some of the greatest South African of the past 100 years. It is not only essential reading for all music students, music lovers and jazz aficionados, but also an important document about history and memory in South Africa. Carefully researched and vitalized by interviews, documentary evidence, and critical commentary, this book holds between its covers the many, sometimes contradictory, voices that have helped shape the society that South Africa is today. A moving and inspiring read, and a fine achievement."-Professor Christine Lucia,Chair of Music, School of the Arts, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa * Blurb from reviewer *"As guitarist Ray Chikapa Phiri states in reference to the anti-apartheid struggle, 'The music won'--eventually. Broadcaster, producer and author Gwen Ansell not only provides a great overview of that victorious struggle but also peels away the white-and-black curtains to show a society as diverse (ethnically and musically) as any on earth. As to be expected in a book about jazz and the blues, the U.S. figures prominently, from the storied visits of the Confederate warship Alabama to Capetown (and the "coon music" festivals it inspired) to U.S. South Africa musical collaborations with the lives of Paul Simon, etc. But this is undeniably the story of the music from the most critical perspective, the musicians', and their comments and testimonies liberally yet purposefuly intersperced throughout the book. Particularly compelling is the story of the music's role during the 'dead years' from the aftermath of the Sharpevilel massacre to democracy's beginnings a decade ago. The closing chapter illuminates the new battles being fought by and within the musical forces, such as social issues and identity questions, plus the traditional 'township' sound versus new directions. Whether as history lesson, music journal or social decument, the power of Soweto Blues is, like the music itself, inescapable. --Michael A. Edwards, Jazz Times (UK) 12/1/04 -- Michael A. Edwards * Blurb from reviewer *"Brilliant...the book is well written and those interested in learning about life under apartheid will appreciate its broad chronicling of this troubled time." -Choice, 3/05 * Choice *Table of ContentsIntroduction; Chapter 1: Where It All Started; Chapter 2: New Sounds of the Cities; Chapter 3: Athens on the Reef; Chapter 4: The Land is Dead; Chapter 5: Underground in Africa; Chapter 6: Jazz for the Struggle, and the Struggle for Jazz; Chapter 7: Home Is Where the Music Is: South African Jazz Abroad; Chapter 8: The 1990s and Beyond: Not Yet Uhuru; Appendix: Interviewees and Recordings; Bibliography

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisFor his 2007 critically acclaimed 33 1/3 series title, Let's Talk About Love, Carl Wilson went on a quest to find his inner Céline Dion fan and explore how we define ourselves by what we call good and bad, what we love and what we hate. At once among the most widely beloved and most reviled and lampooned pop stars of the past few decades, Céline Dion's critics call her mawkish and overblown while millions of fans around the world adore her huge pipes and even bigger feelings. How can anyone say which side is right? This new, expanded edition goes even further, calling on thirteen prominent writers and musicians to respond to themes ranging from sentiment and kitsch to cultural capital and musical snobbery. The original text is followed by lively arguments and stories from Nick Hornby, Krist Novoselic, Ann Powers, Mary Gaitskill, James Franco, Sheila Heti and others. In a new afterword, Carl Wilson examines recent cultural changes in love and hate, including the impact of technTrade ReviewLike the whole world, I'm a fan of Carl Wilson's Celine Dion book. * Jonathan Lethem *An evergreen classic of music criticism--a love letter from a cerebral pop aesthete to the music he sincerely, almost sentimentally hates. * Rob Sheffield *Carl Wilson is a profound listener and an extraordinary writer. Along with being a tremendously important piece of criticism, Let’s Talk About Love is an agile, moving, and generous exploration of the music that accompanies us, welcome or not, on the travels we all need to make on our own. It is a beautiful, funny, unerringly concise book that invites repeated readings, new conversations, and a thoughtful engagement with the culture of our time. * John K. Samson *The book is laugh-out-loud funny, whip-smart about contemporary thought, and fascinating in its many voices, but, readers, beware—you may wind up humming that song for days afterward. -- Eloise Kinney * Booklist *[I]t’s a conversation worth having: as a dialogue between Wilson and his 13 disciples, with peers in social circles, and ultimately with oneself. Why we like what we like is always a fun topic to discuss, but it’s often more challenging and more enlightening to discuss the converse: why we don’t like what we don’t like… Any investigation into cool is incomplete without due consideration of too-cool-for. Wilson has provided a primer for that discourse. -- Kurtt Gottshalk * Brooklyn Rail *…the recently updated Let's Talk About Love—cheekily re-subtitled Why Other People Have Such Bad Taste and bundled with a host of excellent accompanying essays from the book's admirers including Krist Novoselic, Nick Hornby, Ann Powers, and James Franco—is a welcome excuse to revisit the main text in light of our current state of hyperspeed discourse. It's also a good excuse to catch up with Wilson, who continues to be an essential voice in the rock writer community while serving as Slate's music critic. -- Ryan Dombal * Pitchfork *Let’s Talk About Love…is not just a critical study of one Céline Dion album, but an engaging discussion of pop criticism itself. -- Elias Leight * LA Review of Books *In this gnostic context, Carl Wilson’s Let’s Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste, first published in 2007, was a counter-intuitive masterstroke. Wilson’s gamble—that even people who hate Céline Dion would be curious to read an entire book about why they hate her, and what that hatred might mean—paid off handsomely: Let’s Talk About Love was widely and enthusiastically reviewed outside the usual music-geek circles, Wilson appeared on NPR and The Colbert Report, and last year he was hired as Slate’s chief music critic, as plum a gig as a pop critic can expect in today’s collapsing media economy. -- Ellis Avery * Public Books *Freaking brilliant. -- Will Hermes * Hippies and Hipsters *Voted a Best Music Book 2014 * The Guardian *Carl Wilson’s 2007 entry in the 33 1/3 library of pocket-sized books about classic albums is one of the most celebrated in the series. The author goes against the critical grain, not because he defends the music of this much-maligned international phenomenon. Wilson spends most of the book putting Dion into social and cultural context that in the end does not win him over to her kind of music. Wilson’s book, unlike most criticism, openly invites dialogue, even providing an email contact for readers to beat their own breasts for and against Céline Dion. -- Pat Padua * Spectrum Culture *The 33 1/3 series lets writers write (mini) book length tomes based on or inspired by an individual album. It's produced some intriguing experiments, like John Darnielle's novella inspired by Black Sabbath's Masters of Reality (a precursor to this year's debut novel, Wolf In White Van), but in 2007 Carl Wilson exploded the entire premise. He picked an album he hated - Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love - and used it to enter a discourse on what determines good and bad taste. Seven years later, "poptimism" is practically standard practice, and Wilson's tome is a massively influential text in pop criticism. This year, Bloomsbury separated it from 33 1/3 and let it stand on its own in an expanded editions with a whackload of new material. Wilson's original work seemed like it examined Celine from every possible angle, but the 13 new essays, from writers like Nick Hornby, Owen Pallett and Nirvana's Krist Novoselic, show that he may have left a few stones unturned. -- Richard Trapunski * Chart Attack *An expanded version of Wilson's 2007 book for the 33 1/3 series with additional thoughts from 13 writers including James Franco, Ann Powers, Nick Hornby and others. An incredible look at pop culture -- and Celine Dion. -- The Ten Best Books of 2014 * Papermag *Table of ContentsA NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER PART I Let’s Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste Carl Wilson 1. Book SynopsisThe long-awaited memoir from Will Sergeant, guitarist and founder member of the influential band Echo and the Bunnymen.Trade ReviewWith his dry, droll, vivid storytelling, Will Sergeant makes very clear the factors that shaped him, and therefore his band, into such a unique force . . . Sergeant sharply evokes the neurotic importance of music and clothes, his relief at seeing light alter so much darkness especially palpable in the aftermath of his new band's first gig -- Keith Cameron * Mojo *Sergeant's acerbic sense of humour in the telling of these tales means the memoir sometimes reads as if you're in the pub with him . . . Bunnyman manages to do what Echo & the Bunnymen did so brilliantly: be part of a wider story but create an autonomous enclave within it, subject to almost magical laws and precedents * Louder Than War *Engagingly down-to-earth . . . fondly nostalgic picture of 1960s and 70s Merseyside * Classic Rock *Evocative * Irish Times *Wonderfully vivid . . . brings to life an ordinary suburban existence and how music can offer new dreams and visions . . . fascinating . . . His pre-Bunnymen musical experiences are hilarious and self-deprecating * Caught By The River *An engaging coming-of-age story -- Ian Rankin * New Statesman *Wonderful . . . an evocative ride through childhood and teenage years . . . Sergeant writes with such atmosphere you can practically smell the chimney smoke and hear the rattle of glass bottles on milk floats . . . It's all recounted with generous helpings of the author's dry wit, as sharp and seductive as the innovative guitar lines he's contributed to so many great records * Record Collector *Will's story is peppered with evocative detail of growing up in the 60s and 70s . . . a strikingly honest journey . . . Book SynopsisTwenty years after its release, Phish’s double-CD collection A Live One has something rare and precious going for it: it still doesn’t sound like anybody else. Oversized, perverse, requiring an unusual amount of listener background knowledge? Yes to all. Yet the collective improvisations it captures, unprecedentedly coherent yet freewheeling and open-ended, are unique in rock ‘n’ roll. This book considers the music and moment of Phish's ecstatically inventive 1995 live document, a mix of weirdo acid-psych, ambient moonscapes, vaudevillian Americana, and riotous arena-rock energy, all filtered through bandleader Trey Anastasio's screwball compositional sensibility and the band’s idiosyncratic approach to spontaneous group creativity. It places Phish and their fandom in historical and cultural context, and picks apart the mechanics of their extended group jams. Which sounds an awful lot like poetry.”—Joshua Ostroff, Globe and Mail“The eye-opening essay by [Henry Louis] Gates . . . provides deep historical context for rap; it alone makes the book worth owning.”—Slate“Bradley and DuBois succeed in lucidly explaining how societal shifts have been reflected in rap lyrics. . . . Hip Hop is here to stay and rap lives forever—on the stage and now on the page!”—Cornel West“These Rappers’ lyrics love. Cut. Curse. Fight. Teach. Play. Pray. Testify. They bring us the pace of sound. The swiftness of sound. The discordant way of looking at the world of sound. The Blackness of sound. The new bebopic beat of sound. These are word sorcerers who love language and hablar sin bastón (speak without a crutch).”—Sonia Sanchez“This monumental encyclopedia of rhymes is great for hip-hop newbies or longtime fans, lyric lovers and poetry devotees. It’s an invaluable reference on hip-hop history spanning from Afrika Bambaataa to Kanye West.”—Touré“Some readers of poetry still wonder where the rhymes went. One answer is they left the ends of the lines and went inside the poem. But rhyme also strongly re-emerges in rap. • Buddy Holly

    Equinox Publishing Ltd Buddy Holly

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisBuddy Holly occupies an enigmatic position in pop and rock music history, partly because of his premature death at the age of 22 in a plane crash in February 1959. Designated in Don MacLean's hit "American Pie" as 'the day the music died', this enabled him to be included in the trope 'the death of rock 'n roll', alongside the less drastic musical demises of Elvis Presley (joined army), Chuck Berry (imprisoned), Jerry Lee Lewis (disgraced) and Little Richard (joined priesthood). The view that Holly belongs only to the 1950s has often obscured the originality of his music. In an era when the music world was divided into hard rockers, soft pop balladeers and hardcore Nashville country & western singers, his songs transcended the boundaries. Equally innovatory was his use of the recording studio as a laboratory, a place to experiment with sounds. In addition, the two guitars, bass and drums line-up of his group the Crickets was the major contributor to the small group template for generations of rock musicians down to the present day. As well as becoming an influence on other musicians in a conventional sense, Buddy Holly has had his own lengthy musical and cultural afterlife. From the vantage point of 2009, a half century after 'the day the music died', Holly has been the longest-serving member of the rock immortals club, those singers and musicians for whom death seemed to inaugurate a new phase of their career. He has been re-embodied in a biopic, a stage show, in iconic images and numerous reissues of his recordings. While he cannot rival Elvis Presley in terms of sightings (nobody, I think, believes Buddy is still alive) or in terms of 'virtual' performance with his old band, he has been re-embodied in a biopic, a stage show, in iconic images and numerous reissues of his recordings. This book is partly based on the author's 1970 study in the "Rockbooks" series. But it aims to provide a new perspective on Buddy Holly by discussing his career and art in the context of his unique contribution to the swiftly-evolving music scene of the late 1950s and his posthumous 50 year multi-media career through films, stage-shows and copious reissues of his oeuvre.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1 The West Texas Musicscape and Buddy Holly's Musical Ideolect 1950-1955 Chapter 2 A Studio Career: Nashville -Clovis -New York 1956-1959 Chapter 3 On Stage 1956-1959 Chapter 4 The Recordings 1955-1959 Chapter 5 After The Day The Music Died - Memorialising Chapter 6 After the Day the Music Died - Presence and Representations Timeline

Book SynopsisAlthough he died in a tragic car accident at twenty-five, Clifford Brown is widely considered one of the most important figures in the history of jazz, a trumpet player who ranks with Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis, and a leading influence on contemporary jazz musicians. Now, in Clifford Brown: The Life and Art of the Legendary Jazz Trumpeter, Nick Catalano gives us the first major biography of this musical giant. Based on extensive interviews with Clifford Brown''s family, friends, and fellow jazz musicians, here is a fascinating portrait of a remarkable musician. Catalano depicts Brown''s early life, showing how he developed a facility and dazzling technique that few jazz players have ever equaled. We read of his meteoric rise in Philadelphia, where he played with many of the leading jazz players of the 1950s, including Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker; his tour of Europe with Lionel Hampton, which made him famous; and his formation of the Brown-Roach Quintet witTrade ReviewNick Catalano has done a superb job. This is a first-rate biography that is wonderfully readable. * Yorkshire Post *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ; Introduction ; 1. The Brown Family of Wilmington ; 2.
