Taylor & Francis The Cultural Study of Music
Book SynopsisWhat is the relationship between music and culture? The first edition of The Cultural Study of Music: A Critical Introduction explored this question with groundbreaking rigor and breadth. Now this second edition refines that original analysis while examining the ways the field has developed in the years since the bookâs initial publication. Including contributions from scholars of music, cultural studies, anthropology, sociology, and psychology, this anthology provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of music and culture. It includes both pioneering theoretical essays and exhaustively researched case studies on particular issues in world musics. For the second edition, the original essays have been revised and nine new chapters have been added, covering themes such as race, religion, geography, technology, and the politics of music. With an even broader scope and a larger roster of world-renowned contributors, The Cultural Study of Music is certain to remain a canonical text in the field of cultural musicology.Trade Review"The strength of the text is its breadth of analysis: the essays are brief, pithy, and thought-provoking. Basic Books The Hip Hop Wars
Book SynopsisHow hip hop shapes our conversations about race -- and how race influences our consideration of hip hop Hip hop is a distinctive form of black art in America-from Tupac to the Pulitzer Prize-winning Kendrick Lamar, hip hop has long given voice to the African American experience. As scholar and cultural critic Tricia Rose argues, hip hop, in fact, has become one of the primary ways we talk about race in the United States. But hip hop is in crisis. For years, the most commercially successful hip hop has become increasingly saturated with caricatures of black gangstas, thugs, pimps, and hos. This both represents and feeds a problem in black American culture. Or does it? In The Hip-Hop Wars, Rose explores the most crucial issues underlying the polarized claims on each side of the debate: Does hip hop cause violence, or merely reflect a violent ghetto culture? Is hip hop sexist, or are its detractors simply anti-sex? Does the portrayal of black culture in hip hop undermine black advancement? A potent exploration of a divisive and important subject, The Hip Hop Wars concludes with a call for the regalvanization of the progressive and creative heart of hip hop. What Rose calls for is not a sanitized vision of the form, but one that more accurately reflects a much richer space of culture, politics, anger, and yes, sex, than the current ubiquitous images in sound and video currently provide.

Transworld Publishers Ltd Adrenalized Life Def Leppard and Beyond
Book SynopsisMeet Phil Collen. You may know him as the lead guitarist in Def Leppard, whose signature song Pour Some Sugar on Me is still as widely enjoyed as when it debuted in 1988. Maybe you've heard of him as the rock star who gave up alcohol and meat more than 25 years ago. Most likely you've seen him shirtless - in photos or in real life - flaunting his impeccably toned body to appreciative female fans. But it wasn't always like this. Collen worked his way up from nothing, teaching himself guitar from scratch as a teenager by imitating his heroes. He slogged it out in London-based pub bands for years, long before Def Leppard formed and transformed from unknowns to icons (all thanks to a little album called Pyromania), from playing openers in near-empty arenas to headlining in those same stadiums and selling them out every night. But as Collen discovered, true overnight success is a myth. Like the other band members, he had to struggle and fight his way to the top; in tTrade ReviewWild...packed with juicy tales about everyone's favourite nine-armed pop-metal superband * Rolling Stone *Raw and captivating… Collen proves that he is one man who was able to go beyond the ordinary and redefine the rock and roll genre of music… Fans get to know Collen on a more intimate basis, thanks to this authentic memoir. Transworld Publishers Ltd The Progressive Patriot
Book SynopsisWhat does it mean to be English? What does it mean to be British? Is the cross of St George a proud symbol of a great tradition, or the badge of a neo-Nazi? In a world where British citizens can lay bombs to kill their countrymen, where religious fundamentalism is on the increase and where the BNP are somehow part of the democratic process, what does patriotism actually mean? Our identity can change depending on what company we are in. But problems arise when someone tries to tell you what you are, based on your skin tone, religion, accent, surname, or whatever. This book is Billy Bragg''s urgent, eloquent and passionate response to the events of 7 July 2005, when four bombs tore through a busy morning in London, killing 52 innocent people and injuring many more. Faber Music Ltd How to Play Jazz Piano
Book SynopsisDiscover Pam Wedgwood’s exciting world of jazz piano! How to Play Jazz Piano is a fun and simple introduction for young players with a basic knowledge of how to play the piano (about Grade 2 standard). It includes an introduction to improvisation, covers swing, syncopated rhythms, basic chords and scales and modes.Trade ReviewThis book does what it says on the cover, and does it with clarity, style and immense skill. There is a logical progression of 15 sessions that explain the fundamental elements of jazz, covering: understanding syncopated rhythms, how to swing, playing from memory, understanding basic chords and chord symbols, playing in different popular styles, scales and modes used in jazz, the beginnings of improvisation, and suggested listening to provide inspiration. There are also online resources available via a QR code or directly from the Faber website. I tried out some of the sessions with one of my pupils who loves jazzy pieces, but the thought of playing jazz with its different chords, blank bars and modes filled her with horror. We found that this book led us through all these potential pitfalls comfortably and most enjoyably. She got carried away and went leaping ahead – we then practised what we had learned about syncopation and swing on her Burgmüller piece! I can see this book becoming a classic ‘how to’ book, being tremendously helpful for GCSE music, teachers who want to teach ABRSM jazz exams, and for all pianists. I am delighted to say that Pam Wedgwood has done it again. Fiona Lau, Music Teacher Magazine, November 2018
