Who knew there was such riveting sociopolitical drama behind those velvet ropes?New York Times Book Review Prince once told us not to hate him 'cause he's fabulous. But what does it mean to be fabulous? Is fabulous style only about labels, narcissism, and selfieslooking good and feeling gorgeous? Or can acts of fabulousness be political gestures, too? What are the risks of fabulousness? And in what ways is fabulous style a defiant response to the struggles of living while marginalized? madison moore answers these questions in a timely and fascinating bookTrade Review“Fabulous lives up to its title. Who knew there was such riveting sociopolitical drama behind those velvet ropes?"—New York Times Book Review“This joyful cultural analysis looks at fabulousness as a queer aesthetic and political statement.”—Francesca Carington, Tatler“Fabulous is an absorbing, engagingly written, and highly insightful study of how ‘beautiful eccentrics’ creatively self-fashion themselves to articulate identity, assert presence, and reclaim power on the streets and in the nightclub.”—Harvey Young, author of Black Theater Is Black Life"Fabulous does not simply track new club worlds, it takes us to them. Headline Publishing Group POP! The World of Pop Art
Book SynopsisPop art is one of the most pivotal movements in modern art. It challenged the conventional idea of fine art and recognised the pervasive nature of materialism and consumerism that had taken over 20th-century society. This beautifully illustrated book explores Pop art's origins in modern European avant-garde movements such as Cubism and Dadaism, prior to its true beginnings in early 1950's London with the Independent Group and their fascination with American popular culture – leading to the name 'Pop'.Guiding the reader through the work of some of the most well-known practitioners, such as Warhol and Lichtenstein, this compelling book also travels the world to examine how Pop art influenced artists as far afield as Italy, Spain, Finland, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Key figures include Japan's Yayoi Kusama and Italy's Mimmo Rotella. POP! The World of Pop Art explains how – and why – this movement appealed to so many diverse artists on so many levels, including often overlooked female artists who were central to the Pop art scene. Finally, POP! considers the influence of Pop art on other genres, in particular as the precursor to post-modernism and contemporary forms of art. With 15 faithfully reproduced documents, including items from the studios of a number of artists, POP! The World of Pop Art gives a unique insight into this celebrated movement.Table of ContentsIntroduction • The Precursors of Pop: The European Modernists • The British Independent Group • The Roots of American Pop Art • Pop Art and Ad Men (Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg) • European Pop Ripping Up the City • From Centre to Periphery: Other Pop Masters • British Pop Revisited • Body/Politics: Women as Subject and Object of Pop Art • Pop Around the World • The Legacy of Pop Art • Credits.

V & A Publishing Glam Rock: Dandies in the Underworld
Book SynopsisDrawing on the collections of the V&A, Glam Rock narrates the story of glam and explores its impact on fashion, theatre and film. In the early 1970s, glam rock changed the face of popular culture in Britain and, against a backdrop of a nation racked by economical and social crises, its flamboyancy and theatricality provided an excuse for a party and an escapist dream for musicians and fans alike. British acts like David Bowie, Roxy Music, T. Rex and Mott the Hoople - together with American fellow-travellers including Lou Reed, Alice Cooper and Sparks - drew on the original blueprint of rock and roll, as well as a host of other traditions, from Hollywood to the music hall, Berlin cabaret and Broadway musicals to science fiction and pop art. The resulting music was a wild blend of camp artifice and avant-garde decadence. By 1975 the era had come to an end, but glam never truly went away. Indeed, its attitudes and aesthetics have shaped much that has followed since, from disco to punk, the new romantics to Britpop, Prince to Lady Gaga.Table of ContentsFar Beyond the Pale Horizon -- When you Rock and Roll with Me - A Tall Hat and a Tattooed Gown -- Hollywood Highs -- Get Down and Get With It -- The Ballrooms of Mars -- I Could make a Wild Mutation -- Book After Book, I Get Hooked -- Some Kinda Temporary -- Biba-Nova -- Heartbeat, Increasing Heartbeat -- Science Fiction / Double Feature -- Tumbling Down -- After All

Harvard University Press The MilitaryEntertainment Complex
Book SynopsisWith the rise of drones and computer-controlled weapons, the line between war and video games has blurred. The Military-Entertainment Complex traces how the realities of war are inflected by their representation in entertainment. War games, in turn, feature an increasing number of weapons, tactics, and scenarios from the War on Terror.Trade ReviewLocked and loaded, this astonishing account of the ‘military-entertainment complex’ exposes the links between military technologies and popular media, the alignments and affinities among defense agencies, video game companies, and Hollywood studios. With tactical precision, Tim Lenoir and Luke Caldwell show how the militarization of contemporary society is driven less by political interests than by economic interests, revealing the ways in which the entertainment industry and its commercial practices shape the imagination of postmodern warfare. This is a provocative, high-octane book about the war games of everyday life and the future of digital culture. Epic pwn. -- Colin Milburn, University of California, DavisWhile the term ‘military-entertainment complex’ conjures images of dystopian collusion, what Lenoir and Caldwell uncover is far more disturbing: collusion is unnecessary. By avoiding authenticity in favor of adrenaline, billion-dollar video game franchises, such as Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, do more to create a cultural acceptance of war than military PR could ever hope to achieve. Games have not been co-opted by the military, but rather the opposite. Civilians have transformed war into a consumer product, reducing its emotional resonance to that of a theme park ride, all in service of reaching a larger audience. -- Walt Williams, Lead Writer, Spec Ops: The Line

Edinburgh University Press American Culture in the 1950s
Book SynopsisThis book provides a stimulating account of the dominant cultural forms of 1950s America: fiction and poetry; theatre and performance; film and television; music and radio; and the visual arts. Through detailed commentary and focused case studies of influential texts and events - from Invisible Man to West Side Story, from Disneyland to the Seattle World''s Fair, from Rear Window to The Americans - the book examines the way in which modernism and the cold war offer two frames of reference for understanding the trajectory of postwar culture. The two core aims of this volume are to chart the changing complexion of American culture in the years following World War II and to provide readers with a critical investigation of ''the 1950s''. The book provides an intellectual context for approaching 1950s American culture and considers the historical impact of the decade on recent social and cultural developments.Trade ReviewThe 1950s has been transformed in the scholarly literature from a "tranquillized" decade to an almost "tumultuous" one, and therefore is badly in need of a restorative balance. This is the achievement of Martin Halliwell's superb account of a postwar period that, for all of its familiarity, remains tantalizingly elusive. By showing the persistence of the varieties of cultural modernism, he advances the retrospective understanding of a decade that was not merely the lengthened shadow of the Cold War. His book is thoughtful, expansive and engaging. -- Stephen J. Whitfield, Professor of American Studies, Brandeis University, Massachusetts The author has a good command of the variety of cultural forms in the period and has planned the shape and contents of the book thoughtfully. -- Professor Lucy Maddox, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. Bloomsbury Publishing (UK) Soweto Blues
Book SynopsisA major new contribution to the study of African music, Soweto Blues tells the remarkable story of how jazz became a key part of South Africa's struggle in the 20th century, and provides a fascinating overview of the ongoing links between African and American styles of music.Trade Review"Through interviews with a multi-generational cast of literally hundreds of South African musicians, Gwen Ansell retells a story of political ferment, illegal shebeens, underground music, exile and, ultimately, triumph, while tracing the ongoing development of the music up to the current day. Soweto Blues is both valuable and fascinating, a must-read for serious fans of South-Africa music." - Global Rhythm, October 2004"The value of Ansell's text lies in the thoroughly comprehensive way in which she frames the lives of the South African artists who were brave enough to chant down apartheid." -Jazzwise, Kevin Le Gendre, March 2005"...a hard-hitting discussion of how apartheid impacted the lives of ordinary people and musicians alike-and how struggles against it fostered new roads in music.... Soweto Blues is well researched, intimate, and powerful: a ‘must' for any fan of South African music and history." -Library Bookwatch, 4/05"...a hard-hitting discussion of how apartheid impacted the lives of ordinary people and musicians alike-and how struggles against it fostered new roads in music.... Soweto Blues is well researched, intimate, and powerful: a ‘must' for any fan of South African music and history." -Library Bookwatch, 4/05"Soweto Blues is the book South African jazz lovers have been praying for. The book is conceived to be a useful resource to anyone interested in South African jazz—in South Africa and abroad—with varying levels of knowledge about the music. Soweto Blues was a long time in the making. With luck, it will inspire more people to explore the incredible jazz that has come out of South Africa." -- allaboutjazz.com, January 15, 2006"A comprehensive, informative, and essential companion to South African history. It illuminates the important link between history and culture, and in particular the role of artists in the transformation of South African society. Exquisitely researched and documented, Gwen Ansell's book is a labour of love and a gift to all South Africans."-Barbara Masekela, South African Ambassador to the United States"There's an immense amount of research behind each chapter, but this fascinating history is far from dry. What makes her rich politico-musical opus a joy to read is its anecdotal approach. The author lets the musicians talk [which] brings her pages to life and makes the whole book swing."-ThisDay (Johannesburg) -- Tom Rymour, ThisDay (Johannesburg) * Blurb from reviewer *"This book brings together in powerful co-existence the experiences of some of the greatest South African of the past 100 years. It is not only essential reading for all music students, music lovers and jazz aficionados, but also an important document about history and memory in South Africa. Carefully researched and vitalized by interviews, documentary evidence, and critical commentary, this book holds between its covers the many, sometimes contradictory, voices that have helped shape the society that South Africa is today. A moving and inspiring read, and a fine achievement."-Professor Christine Lucia,Chair of Music, School of the Arts, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa * Blurb from reviewer *"As guitarist Ray Chikapa Phiri states in reference to the anti-apartheid struggle, 'The music won'--eventually. Broadcaster, producer and author Gwen Ansell not only provides a great overview of that victorious struggle but also peels away the white-and-black curtains to show a society as diverse (ethnically and musically) as any on earth. As to be expected in a book about jazz and the blues, the U.S. figures prominently, from the storied visits of the Confederate warship Alabama to Capetown (and the "coon music" festivals it inspired) to U.S. South Africa musical collaborations with the lives of Paul Simon, etc. But this is undeniably the story of the music from the most critical perspective, the musicians', and their comments and testimonies liberally yet purposefuly intersperced throughout the book. Particularly compelling is the story of the music's role during the 'dead years' from the aftermath of the Sharpevilel massacre to democracy's beginnings a decade ago. The closing chapter illuminates the new battles being fought by and within the musical forces, such as social issues and identity questions, plus the traditional 'township' sound versus new directions. Whether as history lesson, music journal or social decument, the power of Soweto Blues is, like the music itself, inescapable. --Michael A. Edwards, Jazz Times (UK) 12/1/04 -- Michael A. Edwards * Blurb from reviewer *"Brilliant...the book is well written and those interested in learning about life under apartheid will appreciate its broad chronicling of this troubled time." -Choice, 3/05 * Choice *Table of ContentsIntroduction; Chapter 1: Where It All Started; Chapter 2: New Sounds of the Cities; Chapter 3: Athens on the Reef; Chapter 4: The Land is Dead; Chapter 5: Underground in Africa; Chapter 6: Jazz for the Struggle, and the Struggle for Jazz; Chapter 7: Home Is Where the Music Is: South African Jazz Abroad; Chapter 8: The 1990s and Beyond: Not Yet Uhuru; Appendix: Interviewees and Recordings; Bibliography

HarperCollins Publishers Inc Dress Code
Book SynopsisA New Yorker Magazine Best Book of 2022 * An Esquire Best Nonfiction Book of 2022 * A Town & Country Must-Read Book of 2022 * A Fashionista Summer Read“Smart, funny, and impressively thorough.”—The CutIn the spirit of works by Jia Tolentino and Anne Helen Peterson, a smart and incisive essay collection centered on the fashion industry—its history, its importance, why we wear what we wear, and why it matters—from Elle Magazine’s fashion features director. Why does fashion hold so much power over us? Most of us care about how we dress and how we present ourselves. Style offers clues about everything from class to which in-group we belong to. Bad Feminist for fashion, Dress Code takes aim at the institutions within the fashion industry while reminding us of the importance of dress and what it means for self-presentation. Everything—from societal changes to the progress (or lack thereof) of women’s rights to the hidden motivations behind what we choose to wear to align ourselves with a particular social group—can be tracked through clothing. Veronique Hyland examines thought-provoking questions such as: Why has the “French girl” persisted as our most undying archetype? What does “dressing for yourself” really mean for a woman? How should a female politician dress? Will gender-differentiated fashion go forever out of style? How has social media affected and warped our sense of self-presentation, and how are we styling ourselves expressly for it?Not everyone participates in painting, literature, or film. But there is no “opting out” of fashion. And yet, fashion is still seen as superficial and trivial, and only the finest of couture is considered as art. Hyland argues that fashion is a key that unlocks questions of power, sexuality, and class, taps into history, and sends signals to the world around us. Clothes means something—even if you’re “just” wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Trade Review“Controlling what you wear is a proxy for controlling what you do,” Hyland writes in this examination not only of fashion but also of sartorial life more generally. Hyland finds meaning in what we wear, whether in the nineteenth-century vogue for bloomers or in courtroom attire, which is chosen to convey its wearer’s respectability.” — New Yorker “Smart, funny, and impressively thorough.” — The Cut “Whether you realize it or not, every outfit you choose makes a statement, telling the world who you are and who you want to be. With a rich sense of history and firm grasp on the current culture, Véronique Hyland is your fashion trend translator. Her debut essay collection—wry, thoughtful, and always provocative—is a must read for anyone who cares about clothes…which is to say, everyone.” — Nina Garcia, ELLE Editor-in-Chief and Project Runway judge “This riveting, mind-expanding book made me see the world differently. I'll be thinking about Hyland's funny, incisive observations for years to come -- she has a way of putting things that makes the world snap into focus with its colors slightly sharper and brighter. You will not be able to stop talking about the things you learn from this book!” — Emily Gould, author of Friendship and Perfect Tunes "Anyone who opts in to wearing clothes (and even those who opt out) should pay attention to this book." — Library Journal (starred review) "Véronique Hyland's tremendous essay collection is for fashionistas who like their frock talk served with politics." — Shelf Awareness, starred review

Intellect Books Fan Phenomena: Supernatural
Book SynopsisSupernatural premiered on September 14, 2005, on what was then called the WB Network. Creator Eric Kripke was inspired by Jack Kerouac’s On The Road, putting his heroes, brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, in a big black ’67 Impala and sending them in search of the urban legends that fascinated him. The series attracted a passionate fan base from the start and was described as a 'cultural attractor' that tapped into the zeitgeist of the moment, reflecting global fears of terrorism with its themes of fighting unseen evil. The chemistry between the lead actors, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, contributed to the show’s initial success, and Supernatural found its niche when it combined demon-hunting adventures with a powerful relationship drama that explored the intense, complicated bond between the brothers. Supernatural is as much a story of familial ties, love and loyalty as it is of 'saving people, hunting things.' Fan Phenomena: Supernatural explores the ongoing fascination and passion for a show that developed a relationship with fans through eight seasons and continues to have an impact on fan culture to the present day. Essays here explore the rich dynamic that has developed between fans and producers, actors, writers, directors, the show creator and show-runners through online interactions on Twitter and Facebook, face-to-face exchanges at conventions and representations of fandom within the show’s meta-episodes. Contributors also explore gender and sexuality in the show and in fan art; the visual dynamics, cinematography and symbolism in the episodes as well as the fan videos they inspire; and the culture of influence, learning and teaching in the series.Trade Review'If you love Supernatural, you’ll love this book. ' -- Jeanne Griggs, Necromancy Never Pays'I thoroughly enjoyed this book and appreciated learning new things about my fandom. My personal opinion? Go ahead and just buy this book now; the well rounded articles, essays and academic viewpoints are well worth this books induction into your collection. That’s what’s so great about Fan Phenomena: Supernatural, it presents a variety of perspectives from bloggers to academics to actors that have appeared on the show, all of whom are part of the Supernatural fandom in their own way.' -- Yvonne Popplewell, The GeekiaryTable of ContentsIntroduction – Lynn Zubernis and Katherine Larsen Teaching Through Supernatural: Using SPN in the College Classroom – Paul Booth The Monstrous Male Body – Bridget Kies I See What You Did There: SPN and the Fourth Wall – Lisa Macklem Post, Reblog, Follow, Tweet: Supernatural Fandom and Social Media – Jules Wilkinson Fan Appreciation no.1 Ash48: The Vidder Family Don't End With Blood: Building the Supernatural Family – Mary Frances Casper Supernatural: Making a Difference is the Meaning of Life – Mary F. Watkins Media Limited Authentocrats: Culture, Politics and the New
Book SynopsisWe are entering, we are told, a post-liberal age. Authoritarian populism is in the political ascendant, and notions of permissiveness, multiculturalism and “identity politics” have allegedly failed us, meaning that we must now fall back on some notion of tradition. However, it’s not only the usual, conservative suspects who have got on board with this argument, but centrist politicians who, at least notionally, are hostile to the likes of Donald Trump and UKIP. Authentocrats examines this populism of the centre, and exposes how its spurious concern for “real people” is part of a broader turn within British culture (as exemplified in the brute masculinity of Daniel Craig’s James Bond, the allegedly "progressive" patriotism of nature writing, and a televisual obsession with the World Wars), as it withdraws from the openness of the Nineties under the bad-faith supposition that there’s nowhere to go but backwards. In their declaration that the left can only save itself by becoming less liberal, Authentocrats charges liberals themselves with fuelling the post-liberal turn, and asks where the space might be found for an alternative.

Rutgers University Press Frank Millers Daredevil and the Ends of Heroism
Book SynopsisIn the late 1970s and early 1980s, writer-artist Frank Miller turned Daredevil from a tepid-selling comic into an industry-wide success story. Frank Miller's Daredevil and the Ends of Heroism is both a rigorous study of Miller's artistic influences and innovations and a reflection on how his work on Daredevil impacted generations of comics publishers, creators, and fans.Trade Review"Part of what makes Young's book so readable and compelling is the knowledge that, underneath all of the analysis, there is a highly intelligent man who knows the boy he was, struggling to figure out what to make of this creator whose early work meant—and continues to mean—so much to him." * Los Angeles Review of Books *"This analysis of the man without fear—rendered by the man without fear of merciless vigilante violence—makes for exceptional reading … Unlike far too many ponderous, jargon-laden academic studies, Young gives us a refreshingly conversational and astutely engaging exploration of the visual genius and often warped sensibilities of one of the most important practitioners of the comics form." * Print Magazine *"Young's warm veneration of Miller's aesthetic and disdain for his fascist tendencies make for a personal and engaging read, even for those who are not fans of comics or graphic novels … Highly recommended." * Choice *"An incisive and focused discussion of an understudied era in the Daredevil series that provides a rewarding exploration of how the superhero reflects and shapes broader areas of culture." -- José Alaniz * author of Death, Disability, and the Superhero: The Silver Age and Beyond *"Knowledgeable with regard to the commercial and aesthetic contexts of the superhero genre, but also willing to risk more personal reflection, Young helps us to read these pivotal, powerful works of popular culture afresh." -- Benjamin Saunders * Director of Comics Studies, The University of Oregon *"Young’s Daredevil will be a necessary resource for personal research on subjects such as ‘auteur’ comics, the ‘gritty’ turn in superhero fiction, and the role of ethics and religion in superhero comics." * Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics *"Frank Miller’s Daredevil and the Ends of Heroism joins superb formal analysis to searching moral self-reflection as Young charts his growing disillusionment with Miller’s work without losing sight of the qualities that drew him to it in the first place. If comics studies has yet to fully resolve or even approach the contradictions of Frank Miller, Paul Young has at least shown us one way we can start." * Journal of Comics and Culture *"The Top 75 Community College Titles: January Edition: The best of all the titles appropriate for two-year colleges reviewed in the January issue of Choice." * Choice *"A deeply personal, informative, and astutely analytical work which paints the moral complexities and themes coursing through Miller’s work on Daredevil in the 1970s and 1980s." * Studies in Comics *"The author delves deeply into the life and work of Frank Miller, his influences, his vision of Daredevil and how he successfully re-engineered the Man Without Fear and his rogue’s gallery and supporting cast. Full-color page and scene reproductions from Miller’s run on Daredevil are examined and the author fleshes out how Miller’s innovative layouts, story-telling techniques and unique take on the character changed the way superheroes were viewed." * Collector's Corner *Table of Contents Acknowledgments A Note on the Texts and Images Introduction: Dealing with the Devil 1 Our Story So Far 2 Into the Snake Pit 3 The Unholy Three 4 Comics for Comics’ Sake Interlude: Daredevil versus the Catechism Conclusion: Exposé Notes Index

Rutgers University Press American Cinema of the 2010s: Themes and
Book SynopsisThe 2010s might be remembered as a time of increased polarization in American life. The decade contained both the Obama era and the Trump era, and as the nation’s political fissures widened, so did the gap between the haves and have-nots. Hollywood reflected these divisions, choosing to concentrate on big franchise blockbusters at the expense of mid-budget films, while new players like Netflix and Amazon offered fresh opportunities for low-budget and independent filmmakers. As the movie business changed, films ranging from American Sniper to Get Out found ways to speak to the concerns of a divided nation. The newest installment in the Screen Decades series, American Cinema in the 2010s takes a close look at the memorable movies, visionary filmmakers, and behind-the-scenes drama that made this decade such an exciting time to be a moviegoer. Each chapter offers an in-depth examination of a specific year, covering a wide variety of films, from blockbuster superhero movies like Black Panther and animated films like Frozen to smaller-budget biopics like I, Tonya and horror films like Hereditary. This volume introduces readers to a decade in which established auteurs like Quentin Tarantino were joined by an exceptionally diverse set of new talents, taking American cinema in new directions. Astra Publishing House Takedown: Art and Power in the Digital Age
Book SynopsisFarah Nayeri addresses the difficult questions plaguing the art world, from the bad habits of Old Masters, to the current grappling with identity politics. For centuries, art censorship has been a top-down phenomenon--kings, popes, and one-party states decided what was considered obscene, blasphemous, or politically deviant in art. Today, censorship can also happen from the bottom-up, thanks to calls to action from organizers and social media campaigns. Artists and artworks are routinely taken to task for their insensitivity. In this new world order, artists, critics, philanthropists, galleries and museums alike are recalibrating their efforts to increase the visibility of marginalized voices and respond to the people’s demands for better ethics in art. But what should we, the people, do with this newfound power? With exclusive interviews with Nan Goldin, Sam Durant, Faith Ringgold, and others, Nayeri tackles wide-ranging issues including sex, religion, gender, ethics, animal rights, and race. By asking and answering questions such as: Who gets to make art and who owns it? How do we correct the inequities of the past? What does authenticity, exploitation, and appropriation mean in art? Takedown provides the necessary tools to navigate the art world. Trade Review"Beautifully written, thoughtful and thought provoking, relevant to our times." —Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran "An eye-opening look at how contemporary political issues find their ways into the hushed halls of museums and galleries."— Kirkus Reviews"Marvelously lucid."—Hyperallergic "Farah Nayeri’s Takedown, about art and power in the digital age, is a timely book that is uniquely brilliant. The author, backed up by facts, maps out the crazy madness of our current art world which to a great degree reflects today’s extreme capitalism. In a clear and succinct manner, she unravels the giant game of power, money, and competition ingrained in cultural institutions, where issues of individual freedom, gender and religion are at play. The book is easy to read, interesting, and observant. In its conclusion, the author quotes Alice Procter’s answer to the question of how soon a changing of the guard in the art world will happen, 'I think some people have to die' – a fittingly controversial language." — Ai Weiwei"Farah Nayeri’s book is the most complete discussion to date of the impact of Black Lives Matter, #MeToo and 'cancel culture' on the visual arts – in the US, Britain, and France. It includes fascinating and illustrative examples, and concludes with a convincing argument as to why museums should show not only great historical art, but also new, untested art – from all communities. A must-read for every museum director." — Don Thompson, author of The $12 Million Stuffed Shark and The Orange Balloon Dog. Table of ContentsContentsPrologue1. The Clash of Art and Politics2.
