• Living in the Plastic Age: Perspectives from

Campus Verlag Living in the Plastic Age: Perspectives from

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisA comprehensive discussion on the complex role of plastics in society-nature relationships. The anthology Living in the Plastic Age focuses on the multidimensional facets of plastics and microplastics from different disciplinary angles. Small plastic fragments (microplastics) and larger plastic waste can be found even on the remotest island. Plastic waste all over the planet is the visual footprint of humanity’s consumerism and mass production. Plastics shape the relationship between society and nature in such a profound way that we can today speak of the “Plastic Age.” This anthology aims to question the role of plastics in our society and the implications plastics have for the environment and human health. The detection of this emergent contaminant opens up a new field of scientific engagement for natural sciences on the effects of (micro-) plastics for the environment and the social sciences on new governance regimes on marine litter as well as on solution strategies to combat plastic waste. • Introduction to Physics and Chemistry of Combustion: Explosion, Flame, Detonation

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Introduction to Physics and Chemistry of Combustion: Explosion, Flame, Detonation

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMost of the material covered in this book deals with the fundamentals of chemistry and physics of key processes and fundamental mechanisms for various combustion and combustion related phenomena in gaseous combustible mixture. It provides the reader with basic knowledge of burning processes and mechanisms of reaction wave propagation. The combustion of a gas mixture (flame, explosion, detonation) is necessarily accompanied by motion of the gas. The process of combustion is therefore not only a chemical phenomenon but also one of gas dynamics. The material selection focuses on the gas phase and with premixed gas combustion. Premixed gas combustion is of practical importance in engines, modern gas turbine and explosions, where the fuel and air are essentially premixed, and combustion occurs by the propagation of a front separating unburned mixture from fully burned mixture. Since premixed combustion is the most fundamental and potential for practical applications, the emphasis in the present work is be placed on regimes of premixed combustion. This text is intended for graduate students of different specialties, including physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, computer science, mathematics and astrophysics. Book SynopsisTHE ART OF PLASTIC Plastic is everywhere. It permeates our everyday lives, is inexpensive and available worldwide. Thanks to their literally astonishing plasticity, plastics soon began to fascinate artists as well - both as a symptom and a symbol of mass culture. In the brief history of the "Plastic Age" the versatile substance transformed though: from the epitome of progress, utopian spirit, and democratization of consumerism into a threat. Plastic World offers a broad panorama of the artistic use of plastic and a position towards a matter that matters to us all. Through more than 100 objects, assemblages, installations, environments and films by some 50 international artists, this catalogue explores a spectrum ranging from the euphoria of pop culture in the 1960s and the futuristic influence of the space age, to the "trash" works of Nouveau Realisme and the ecocritical positions of today. • The Computational Structure of Life Cycle Assessment

Springer The Computational Structure of Life Cycle Assessment

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisLife Cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool for environmental decision-support in relation to products from the cradle to the grave. Until now, more emphasis has been put on the inclusion quantitative models and databases and on the design of guidebooks for applying LCA than on the integrative aspect of combining these models and data. This is a remarkable thing, since LCA in practice deals with thousands of quantitative data items that have to be combined in the correct manner. For this, one needs mathematical rules and algorithmic principles for carrying out an LCA. This book presents the first coherent treatment of the mathematical and algorithmic aspects of LCA. These computational aspects are presented in matrix form, so that a concise and elegant formulation is achieved. This form, moreover, provides a platform for further extension of analysis using perturbation theory, structural theory and economic input-output analysis.Trade Review"Heijungs and Suh's Computational Structure of Life Cycles Assessment fills a gap in the methodological literature supporting life-cycle assessments (LCA). It provides a consistent approach, terminology, and notation previously lacking and only partially addressed by archival literature and standardization efforts. Much of the book focuses on the computational aspects of inventory analysis using linear algebra. The construction has atleast three advantages. First, the method is compatible with current inventory data collection and management practices…Second, the computational structure forces the practitioner to account for the full life cycle of material and energy flows and explicitly accounts for "complications"….Third, the matrix structure facilitates impact assessment and interpretation as currently applied by LCA practitioners…Even though the linear algebra concepts used are quite basic, the text is really designed for the atleast somewhat experienced LCA practitioner or the graduate student with some level of comfort in applying mathematical models to complex systems…Finally, the computational structure presented is complete in taking the practitioner from inventory analysis through interpretation.. Practitioners who read this text will benefit from the author’s experiences in applying LCA and developing LCA methods…" Journal of Industrial Ecology, 7:2 (2003)Table of ContentsPreface. 1. Book SynopsisThe phenomenon of "cancer villages" has emerged in many parts of rural China, drawing media attention and becoming a fact of social life. However, the relationship between pollution and disease is often hard to discern. Through sociological analysis of several villages with different social and economic structures, the authors offer a comprehensive, historically grounded analysis of the coexistence between the incidence of cancer, environmental pollution and villagers’ lifestyles, as well as the perceptions, claims and responses of different actors. They situate the appearance of "cancer villages" in the context of social, economic and cultural change in China, tracing the evolution of the issue over two decades, and providing deep insights into the complex interactions and trade-offs between economic growth, environmental change and public health.Trade Review"This book is an important contribution to China studies and scholarly research on environmental health. Comprising 10 chapters, several of which were first published in 2013 in Chinese, the publication of this English-language edition provides a detailed and informative collection of reports on collective medical claims about China's rural population living in deteriorating environmental conditions."- Suvi Rautio, The China Journal, Volume 86, July 2021 "Impeccably researched and carefully crafted, this work offers a timely and sobering inquiry into collective claims of victimization associated with polluted water and air in rural China."- Jing Jun, Tsinghua University"Chinese "Cancer Villages" is a meticulously researched and emotionally charged book that makes important advances in the fields of China studies, environmental health, rural sociology and anthropology."- Bryan Tilt, Oregon State UniversityTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface. Book SynopsisContainment barrier systems are among the most widely used technologies for remediating contaminated sites. Various structures have been engineered to address site-specific needs, while barrier selection depends largely on whether regulatory requirements are prescriptive, or performance based. This publication provides an introduction to the design and construction of different containment barriers for low-level radioactive waste generated from remediation activities: basal (bottom) liners, final covers, in situ vertical barriers and in situ permeable reactive barriers. Practical aspects of each structure are discussed in theoretical case studies, which allow remediation project designers, implementers and regulators to make more informed decisions about the use of these barriers.

Book SynopsisPlastic pollution is a growing environmental problem that is attracting increasing interest across society, from academics to the general public. A significant factor in the wide public interest in plastics is its visibility; present throughout urban and rural environments, washing up on beaches and even visible from space. However, 'invisible' microplastics and nanoplastics are also an issue. With growing plastic production and usage, plastic waste within the environment will continue to increase. This increased input along with its persistence leads to accumulation and increasing ecosystem exposure, with as-yet unknown consequences. This book brings together a collection of chapters written by world-leading experts in environmental plastic pollution inputs, fate, effects and solutions. It provides an accessible overview of the current scientific understanding, future implications and key considerations for the management and mitigation of plastic waste within the global ocean.Related Link(s)
