Rizzoli International Publications Summer Wheat
Book SynopsisThe Future (and the past) is Female: Summer Wheat's whimsical, often tongue-in-cheek tableaux in rich jewel tones punctuated with bright neons, teem with fantastical figures that imagine tribes of women hunting, collaborating, celebrating, and ultimately replacing millennia of images of male rulers and warriors. Summer Wheat's unique formative experiences with art growing up in Oklahoma were shaped by the aesthetic and conceptual drive of the images that surrounded her from the rich textures Native American weavings to the brilliant hues of Lisa Frank Trapper Keepers. Bridging those early influences with the canon of Western art (from ancient sculpture to medieval tapestries) and popular references such as astrology and music videos, the artist's work centers female archetypes 0in her expansive practice of painting, sculpture, and large-scale installation. For the artist's first monograph, curator Jen Sudul Edwards discusses the wide range of subjects that inform Wheat's work and p

Taylor & Francis Health Behavior Change
Book SynopsisThe new and updated edition of Health Behavior Change: Theories, Methods and Interventions, provides a complete understanding of health behavior change, from its theoretical building blocks to the practical challenges of developing and testing an intervention. Based on the latest evidence in the field, the authors present a theory-driven, scientific approach to understanding and changing health behaviors, examining the theories that explain health behavior, the techniques that most effectively change health behavior, and the methods and statistical approaches essential to generating the underpinning evidence. This approach is presented in the context of both health promoting behaviors such as healthy eating, and health risk behaviors such as smoking, and considers not only the role of individuals but also other important influences on health behavior including the environment, policy, and technology.Among other additions, the revised edition includes the following feTrade Review"With cutting-edge information and critiques of theories and techniques of behaviour change, and methods of collecting and analysing data, this important go-to book is for all those wanting to understand, practise or teach the science of changing behaviour, especially in relation to health."Susan Michie, Professor of Health Psychology and Director of the Centre for Behaviour Change, UCL"Prestwich, Kenworthy and Conner have given the field a delightful gift – a thorough and thoroughly accessible soup-to-nuts look at the complexity of health behavior change. Their volume gives the reader all of the important facets of the behavior change conundrum – how to measure and intervene on relevant constructs, where those constructs fit in both conventional and newer theories, and how to consider the many environmental and contextual factors that are often just as if not more influential. This volume is one-stop-shopping for the student or health professional who wants a contemporary summary of all there is to know about theories of and approaches to health behavior change."William Klein, Associate Director of Behavioral Research, National Cancer Institute "What changes behaviour? How good are internet-based interventions? Do worry and rumination change behaviour? How can we reduce risk of bias in an experimental study? What is the right sample size? How do I quickly find useful literatures? These are just a few of the myriad questions this timely, authoritative compendium addresses that should prove indispensable to students, teachers and researchers alike."Professor Dame Theresa Marteau, Behavioural Scientist, University of Cambridge"This book provides an excellent overview of various psychological constructs, mechanisms, and intervention approaches that can be used to modify health behaviors. The book covers a broad range of health promotion strategies and behavior change techniques, including those that leverage technology, environment, and health policy. The book is considered a cornerstone of information because it provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the field, making it essential reading for students and researchers alike. Novice researchers can benefit from the book's clear explanations and practical examples, while seasoned researchers can use it as a reference tool to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field. By addressing a range of health promotion strategies and behavior change techniques, the book offers readers a broad understanding of how to modify health behaviors effectively. The inclusion of technology, environment, and health policy also highlights the importance of considering these factors when designing interventions. Overall, the book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in understanding and modifying health behaviors. It provides a wealth of information on various approaches to behavior change and offers practical guidance on how to design and implement effective interventions."Prof. Dr. Ralf Schwarzer, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany"I highly recommend the 2nd edition of this book to students and researchers interested in the psychology of health behaviour change. The authors have done an excellent job in providing an overview of the various personal, social, cultural, environmental, policy, and technological factors that influence engagement in (or avoidance of) a variety of health behaviours. I particularly like the discussion of key questions in the form of "Burning Issue Boxes". These boxes, in conjunction with the emphasis on critical skills toolkits, the overview of a wide array of methodologies as well as analytical choices for health behaviour change data, should equip the readers of this book with important critical skills to evaluate the evidence underpinning the various theories outlined in the book. I also very much like the focus on contemporary issues, such as the replicability crisis and potential solutions, the impact of COVID-19 on health behaviours, and the interface between health behaviours and climate change. This second edition is a very valuable resource for anyone interested in health psychology and behavioural science."Nikos Ntoumanis, Professor of Motivation Science, University of Southern DenmarkTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Sociality
Book SynopsisThis book develops a very particular concept of sociality: a holistic way of understanding how human beings have come to care about and collectively provide for their welfare as a species and to recognise each other's needs in terms of shared social rights. It tells not so much a success story as a hopeful story. It provides a new way of looking at how our rights to life's essentials have been in the past, are now and can in the future be understood. It is, potentially, a book for anyone interested in the human condition but will be especially interesting for those engaged in human service provision, community action, social development, welfare law and political debate, and particularly useful to students of social policy and human rights. It is a radically revised edition of Social Rights and Human Welfare, first published in 2015. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Writing History
Book SynopsisThe third edition of Writing History provides students and teachers with a comprehensive overview of how the study of history is informed by a broader intellectual and analytical framework, exploring the emergence and development of history as a discipline and the major theoretical developments that have informed historical writing. Instead of focusing on theory, this book offers succinct explanations of key concepts that illuminate the study of history and practical writing, and demonstrates the ways they have informed practical work. This fully revised new edition comprehensively rewrites and updates original chapters but also includes new features such as:- new chapters on postcolonial, environmental and transnational history;- chapter introductions setting them within the context of historiography;- a new substantive introduction from the editors, providing a useful road-map for students;- an expanded glossary. In its new incarnation Writing History is, more than everTrade ReviewBerger, Passmore and Feldner have assembled a remarkable and essential book for our times. It is at once a tour of the discipline of history and its major currents as well as a series of meditations on its future pathways. Students and scholars alike will draw enlightenment and inspiration from it. * Jeremy Adelman, Henry Charles Lea Professor of History, Princeton University, USA *A valuable resource for students seeking a solid historical framework for their own historical inquiries, the updated edition features vital trends in historiography, from animal history and cultural history to the social biographies of material culture objects. Integrating the history of the discipline into assessments of its diverse practices, the authors succeed in making both methodology and theory accessible. * Susan A. Crane, Associate Professor of History, University of Arizona, USA *Writing History: Theory and Practice takes a broad view, attempting to say something about most areas of historiography. It shows the imaginative ways in which different historians use various theoretical tools. * John H. Arnold, Professor of Medieval History, University of Cambridge, UK *Writing History: Theory and Practice was already one of the best collections of essays on historical writing. Now the third edition expands its reach while incorporating the most recent developments. Authored by a seasoned team of experts, this volume leaves few stones unturned as it considers the intellectual roots of the discipline, the engagement of historians with other fields, and the state of contemporary practice. Each of the nineteen chapters is a brilliant standalone contribution reflecting on key aspects of historical scholarship, but they also fit together remarkably well to provide a comprehensive account of Western historiography and the major turns of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The result is an accessible, indispensable survey of history’s complex and fascinating theoretical terrain. * J. John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Tragedy of Property: Private Life, Ownership
Book SynopsisRussian novels, poetry and ballet put the country squarely in the European family of cultures and yet there is something different about this country, especially in terms of its political culture. What makes Russia different? Maxim Trudolyubov uses private property as a lens to highlight the most important features that distinguish Russia as a political culture. In many Western societies, private property has acted as the private individual’s bulwark against the state; in Russia, by contrast, it has mostly been used by the authorities as a governance tool. Nineteenth-century Russian liberals did not consider property rights to be one of the civil causes worthy of defending. Property was associated with serfdom, and even after the emancipation of the serfs the institution of property was still seen as an attribute of retrograde aristocracy and oppressive government. It was something to be destroyed – and indeed it was, in 1917. Ironically, it was the Soviet Union that, with the arrival of mass housing in the 1960s, gave the concept of private ownership a good name. After forced collectivization and mass urbanization, people were yearning for a space of their own. The collapse of the Soviet ideology allowed property to be called property, but not all properties were equal. You could own a flat but not an oil company, which could be property on paper but not in reality. This is why most Russian entrepreneurs register their businesses in offshore jurisdictions and park their money abroad. This fresh and highly original perspective on Russian history will be of great interest to anyone who wants to understand Russia today.Trade Review‘The Tragedy of Property is the story of how Russia came to be as it is: a land of aspiration and anxiety, of challenge and opportunity, and of endless unasked questions. Manchester University Press Writing the United Kingdom Constitution
Book SynopsisOur unwritten Constitution is past its sell-by date. If the Union is to be preserved we must recognise the UK as a federal country along the lines of Canada and Australia, and soon. Such is the argument made by Brice Dickson in this lucid and timely intervention to the debate on Britain’s political future. A federal structure, he reasons, could maximise the benefits of cooperation between semi-autonomous regions while at the same time paying due respect to the nationalisms that exist within constituent parts of the country. The devolution of powers to the home nations, coupled with the trials and tribulations associated with Brexit and reform of the House of Lords, point to grave risks in the UK’s current constitutional position. Dickson proposes a Constitutional Reform Act which would federalise the nation, provide a modern Bill of Rights, formalise allocation of public expenditure to devolved regions, and contain a clause setting out the 'purpose' of the UK.The UK has an enviable record in rising to a variety of challenges down the centuries, but the fallout from our recent history makes greater certainty and predictability imperative. This urgent analysis by one of our leading constitutional experts points to how that might best be achieved.Trade Review‘Brexit has heated-up the debate about the merits and defects of our constitution, whether we should do something about it, and if so what. Brice Dickson makes a characteristically thoughtful and stimulating contribution to the discussion.’ — Lord Pannick QC‘Brice Dickson argues that now, post Brexit, our constitution needs to cement the Union. He’s right. We don’t need a fully written constitution, but we do need seriously to address and respond to the forces that are pulling the four home nations apart. The United Kingdom’s survival depends on it.’ — Adam Tomkins MSP, Professor of Law, University of Glasgow‘The turmoil surrounding Brexit has caused many to doubt whether the UK’s uncodified constitution is still fit for purpose. Brice Dickson plausibly suggests that a new, federal constitutional settlement may offer a way forward. Here we have a masterly essay by a highly respected constitutional analyst, who possesses the rare gift of elucidating complex issues without ever dumbing them down.’ — Gavin Drewry, Emeritus Professor of Public Administration, Royal Holloway, University of London‘In recent years, a number of jurists and academics have argued that Britain needs to follow almost every other democracy by enacting a codified constitution. Are they right? The debate is likely to intensify after Brexit. Writing the United Kingdom Constitution offers an excellent introduction to the issues.’ — Vernon Bogdanor, Professor of Government, Kings College London, author of Beyond Brexit: Towards a British Constitution‘Brice Dickson believes that a full-blown written constitution would unleash an endless debate of irreconcilable demands. Instead, he urges a new Constitutional Reform Act to enshrine an acknowledged constitutional federation so as to keep the component parts together in a Union that is looking rather fragile of late. Federalism, well-designed, can help preserve unity to the extent desired but also to respect diversity and distinctiveness appropriate to the parts . If the UK is to survive as such, it needs an acknowledged federal form of government. If the only way to attain that objective is to enact a minimalist model, Dickson's ideas command close attention. The ideas in this book are as important as they are urgent.’ — The Hon Michael Kirby. Book Synopsis*** The New York Times Bestseller ***'Lucy Adlington tells of the horrors of the Nazi occupation and the concentration camps from a fascinating and original angle. At the height of the Holocaust twenty-five young inmates of the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp - mainly Jewish women and girls - were selected to design, cut, and sew beautiful fashions for elite Nazi women in a dedicated salon. It was work that they hoped would spare them from the gas chambers. This fashion workshop - called the Upper Tailoring Studio - was established by Hedwig Höss, the camp commandant's wife, and patronized by the wives of SS guards and officers. Here, the dressmakers produced high-quality garments for SS social functions in Auschwitz, and for ladies from Nazi Berlin's upper crust. Drawing on diverse sources - including interviews with the last surviving seamstress - The Dressmakers of Auschwitz follows the fates of these brave women. Their bonds of family and friendship not only helped them endure persecution, but also to play their part in camp resistance. Weaving the dressmakers' remarkable experiences within the context of Nazi policies for plunder and exploitation, historian Lucy Adlington exposes the greed, cruelty, and hypocrisy of the Third Reich and offers a fresh look at a little-known chapter of World War II and the Holocaust.

Scheele's illustrations are lively, animated and engaging, taking the text to a new level of connectivity with the readership. Scheele has always had a fluid and appealing cartooning style but here their graphic characterisation and ability to encapsulate ideas and emotions in striking visual metaphor is outstanding in its application, adding relatable layers to Barker's already accessible words. -- Broken Frontier

Canongate Books Amateur: A True Story About What Makes a Man
Book SynopsisShortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-FictionIn this groundbreaking new book, Thomas Page McBee, a trans man, trains to fight in a charity match at Madison Square Garden while struggling to untangle the vexed relationship between masculinity and violence.Through his experience of boxing - learning to get hit, and to hit back; wrestling with the camaraderie of the gym; confronting the betrayals and strength of his own body - McBee examines the weight of male violence, the pervasiveness of gender stereotypes and the limitations of conventional masculinity. A wide-ranging exploration of gender in our society, Amateur is ultimately a story of hope, as McBee traces a way forward: a new masculinity, inside the ring and out of it.A graceful and uncompromising exploration of living, fighting and healing, in Amateur we gain insight into the stereotypes and shifting realities of masculinity today through the eyes of a new man.Trade ReviewAmateur provocatively describes the ways in which an increasingly fragile patriarchal culture needs to keep men in their place. Daily Mail In Scenes from Prehistoric Life, the distinguished archaeologist Francis Pryor paints a vivid picture of British and Irish prehistory, from the Old Stone Age (about one million years ago) to the arrival of the Romans in AD 43, in a sequence of fifteen profiles of ancient landscapes. Whether writing about the early human family who trod the estuarine muds of Happisburgh in Norfolk c.900,000 BC, the craftsmen who built a wooden trackway in the Somerset Levels early in the fourth millennium BC, or the Iron Age denizens of Britain's first towns, Pryor uses excavations and surveys to uncover the daily routines of our ancient ancestors. By revealing how our prehistoric forebears coped with both simple practical problems and more existential challenges, Francis Pryor offers remarkable insights into the long and unrecorded centuries of our early history, and a convincing, well-attested and movingly human portrait of prehistoric life as it was really lived.Trade ReviewDecades worth of communicating archaeology on TV and a recent foray into crime fiction writing help make this book a highly compelling read * Spectator *An evocative foray into the prehistoric past... Penguin Books Ltd The Performer
Book SynopsisAn exploration of public performance in everyday life, by the leading cultural and social thinkerThe Performer explores the relations between performing in art (particularly music), politics and everyday experience. It focuses on the bodily and physical dimensions of performing, rather than on words. Richard Sennett is particularly attuned to the ways in which the rituals of ordinary life are performances. The book draws on history and sociology, and more personally on the author's early career as a professional cellist, as well as on his later work as a city planner and social thinker. It traces the evolution of performing spaces in the city; the emergence of actors, musicians, and dancers as independent artists; the inequality between performer and spectator; the uneasy relations between artistic creation and social and religious ritual; the uses and abuses of acting by politicians. The Janus-faced art of performing is both destructive and civilizing. This is the first in a trilogy of books on the fundamental DNA of human expression: performing, narrating, and imaging.

Book Synopsis'This forensic study of the Renaissance banking dynasty conjures up a world of art, literature, philosophy – and brutality' Telegraph 'Likely to become the standard work of reference on the members of the family that dominated Florence' TLS 'A lucid and beautifully illustrated family history' The Times Wealthy bankers, wise politicians, patrons of the arts, glittering dukes... so runs the traditional telling of the story of the Medici, the family that ruled Florence for two hundred years and inspired the birth of the Italian Renaissance. In this definitive account of their rise and fall, Mary Hollingsworth argues that the idea that the Medici were wise rulers and enlightened fathers of the Renaissance is a fiction. In truth, she says, the Medici were as devious and immoral as the Borgias – tyrants loathed in the city they illegally made their own and which they beggared in their lust for power.Trade ReviewThis forensic study of the Renaissance banking dynasty conjures up a world of art, literature, philosophy – and brutality * Telegraph, Book of the Year *Likely to become the standard work of reference on the members of the family that dominated Florence * TLS *A lucid and beautifully illustrated family history * The Times, Book of the Week *A beautifully illustrated and scholarly survey of five centuries of the Medici family * Literary Review *A vital acquisition for anyone who studies the Renaissance and seeks the true role of the Medici in the history of Florence * Kirkus *An excellent study of the Medici... Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Pocket Guide to Neurodiversity
Book SynopsisAt least one in seven people are thought to be neurodivergent. So what exactly is neurodiversity? What does 'executive functioning' mean? What are 'spiky profiles'?In this simple guide, expert speaker and trainer Daniel Aherne provides a clear introduction to neurodiversity and the four most common neurodivergent identities of autism, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia. Using an analogy of a cactus needing a desert to grow in, he emphasises the importance of getting the environment right for neurodivergent people, rather than expecting them to adapt to the neurotypical world. Daniel, who himself has ADHD, also explains how neurodivergent people often have great strengths alongside areas of difficulty, and writes about the interplay between diagnoses, as well as unpacking tricky concepts such as working memory, sensory processing, communication differences and more.Busting common misconceptions and setting out simple tips and guidance for supporting the neurodivergent people around you, whether among your family, friends or at your school, college or workplace - or if you yourself are ND and want to improve the understanding of others - this essential guide will help us all celebrate neurodiversity and foster more inclusive communities.Trade ReviewThis is a great introduction to the complex world of neurodiversity. Every classroom should have a copy, for both educators to learn the basics from, and young people to begin understand themselves or others. The moments for reflection are going to be crucial for many individuals to think about changing their lives and those of others. -- Charli ClementA gripping guide to neurodiversity - Daniel clearly explains ADHD, autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia and provides a fresh, lively and personal account of human differences. A must-read for employers and educators with practical suggestions provided through a lived experience perspective. A true celebration of the power of thinking differently. -- Dr Lisa Harkry (CPsychol, FHEA)I wish this 'guide to Neurodiversity' was available when I started to navigate and appreciate how my son experienced 'the world differently to other people'. Daniel simply and concisely highlights key considerations that everyone should have an awareness of that can have a positive impact and be more neuroinclusive. -- Georgie Siddall, Parent, Carer and Facilitator for Families in Focus Early Years Parent NetworkIn our society, many stigmas and stereotypes still exist around neurodivergent people. This is due to a lack of awareness, understanding and societal expectations. With his fantastic and much needed work, Daniel creates not only awareness about the often unspoken, but he also challenges us in our thinking and encourages us to focus on the strengths and abilities of people that are neurodiverse. Featuring successful people that are neurodivergent gives hope and confidence to those that have never seen themselves in such positions and to the families that often feel they do not fit in the society. This book should be a must read for everyone - from teachers, families, leaders to any neurodivergent people that struggle with understanding why they seem to be different. The book gives a great understanding of different types and helpful guidance. At the end, we are all different and a more neurodivergent environment also helps to create an environment in which we all can thrive. -- Felizitas Lichtenberg, Global Head of Diversity & Inclusion at SumUpThis essential handbook works well for managers across all sectors. Clear and concise, it makes lively reading for managers and co-workers alike and offers an excellent go-to guide for better workplaces. Understanding neurodiversity is your first step in managing staff to improve their work life and yours, increasing team achievements and your organisation's performance targets. -- Professor Lynn Martin, Anglia Ruskin University, CambridgeDaniel Aherne's 'Pocket Guide to Neurodiversity' takes a thoughtful and insightful approach to guiding the reader into the rewarding opportunities available to employers in embracing the richness of neurodivergent people within their organisation. Daniel is an expert at gently guiding us, with kind curiosity, into the world of people with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. He provides moments for deeper reflection and consideration as to how we can all play a part in enjoying workplaces that benefit from their talents and are respectful of their needs. With his ability to help us challenge our misconceptions, Daniel provides us with a multitude of ideas to make the workplace more inclusive for neurodivergent colleagues. The Indigo Press Riambel
Book SynopsisFifteen-year-old Noemi has no choice but to leave school and work in the house of the wealthy De Grandbourg family. Just across the road from the slums where she grew up, she encounters a world that is starkly different from her own – yet one which would have been all too familiar to her ancestors. Bewitched by a pair of green eyes and haunted by echoes, her life begins to mirror those of girls who have gone before her. Within Noemi’s lament is also the herstory of Mauritius; the story of women who have resisted arrest, of teachers who care for their poorest pupils and encourage them to challenge traditional narratives, of a flawed Paradise undergoing slow but unstoppable change. In Riambel, Priya Hein invites us to protest, to rail against longstanding structures of class and ethnicity. She shows us a world of natural enchantment contrasted with violence and the abuse of power. This seemingly simple tale of servitude, seduction and abandonment blisters with a fierce sense of injustice.Trade Review‘Not only am I finding the book really fascinating but I’m getting through it really quickly as I’m compelled to turn the pages!’ https://www.instagram.com/p/ChpjzZVoD0Y/?hl=en ‘4 stars’ https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch7tYSoLqSr/?hl=en -- @zukythebookbum * Instagram *‘I absolutely flew through it.
