In this definitive biography, written with unprecedented access to the man himself, Adam Sisman offers an illuminating portrait of a fascinating and enigmatic writer. In Cornwell''s lonely childhood, Adam Sisman uncovers the origins of the themes of love and abandonment which dominated le Carré''s fiction: the departure of his mother when he was five, followed by ''sixteen hugless years'' in the dubious care of his father, a man of eneTrade ReviewUltimately it's about love ... this is a very emotional book. John le Carré had an utterly heartbreaking childhood ... This is the best biography of 2015 - a rare achievement that invites rereading -- Edward Wilson * Independent *Compendious and compelling...Sisman is excellent at the nuts and bolts of writing and of being published...it must be difficult to write the life of a man who is still very much with us, and in the public eye, no matter how much liberty the biographer has been given to tell the story, warts and all. This book helps students and educators to better understand emotions and their significance in social life and in education. Book SynopsisThe bitter fighting in the so-called Falaise-Argentan Pocket in August 1944, during which the Allies encircled and destroyed a substantial part of Hitler's forces in northern France following the D-Day landings, marked the last major battle of the Normandy campaign. Despite this, tens of thousands of German soldiers managed to escape through the infamous Falaise Gap. It was as the Allies continued to pursue the retreating enemy forces that the planners considered or drew-up a number of further airborne operations. As James Daly reveals, three operations, namely _Lucky Strike_, _Transfigure_ and _Axehead_, might well have been part of the last of the fighting in the breakout from, Normandy itself. The first of these, _Lucky Strike_, was intended to see General Montgomery's 21st Army Group strike to the north-east in the direction of the River Seine, where bridges near Rouen were to be taken by the British 1st Airborne Division. _Transfigure_ was to be a major operation with the aim

Book SynopsisWar for England''s Shores examines the Kriegsmarine''s S-Boat offensive along the English Channel and the North Sea from 1940 to 1945, together with British and, later, Allied responses to nullify that threat. Very fast, and armed with torpedoes and mines, S-Boats posed a serious threat to the convoys that were forced to run close along the British coast on a daily basis. Despite the significance of this campaign and the real threat to the whole British war economy, it has been, until now, strangely overlooked by historians. Indeed, the book highlights issues around the maritime identity of those states and navies that see themselves in oceanic terms, at the expense of engagement with, and operations in, coastal waters.Using an array of archival materials from Britain, Germany and the USA, The War for England's Shores examines why the Germans failed to make the most of this opportunity to disrupt British trade. G H Bennett analyses how the British slowly countered the threat by embraci

The 8th and 9th Battalions left the Regimental Depot in Richmond in late September and moved to Frensham on the Hampshire/Surrey border, where they trained hard until bad weather forced a move to barracks in Aldershot. They arrived on the Somme front at the end of June 1916, but were not involved in the fighting until 5 July, when the 9th Battalion captured Horseshoe trench and Lieutenant Donald Simpson Bell won the VC when he destroyed a German machine gun position. On 10 July both battalions took part in the capture of Contalmaison, a village that had been a first day objective. A second VC was awarded posthumously to Private Will

Book SynopsisThis innovative book provides clear and straight-forward strategies which help students to understand the conventions of academic assignments and what lecturers expect from their work. Simplify Your Study is organised around nine core units which focus on the sticking points' of university study, including organisation and planning, reading and note-making strategies, producing essays, critical thinking, delivering presentations and preparing for exams. Packed with tried-and-tested strategies for success, this essential resource will help students of all disciplines and levels to achieve their academic potential.Accompanying online resources for this title can be found at bloomsburyonlineresources.com/simplify-your-study. These resources are designed to support teaching and learning when using this textbook and are available at no extra cost.Trade ReviewFor many students in higher education academic study can be daunting, stressful or frustrating. Consciously or unconsciously, these students use the same studying and learning techniques that they acquired at school, but fail to achieve their potential. Here's their problem: those techniques are not fit for 'academic' purpose. However, students never learn this because they receive feedback on their output (e.g. assignments, exams, etc.) rather than on their input (i.e. how they study). Peter Lia has dedicated his career in higher education to empowering students to take more thoughtful and strategic approaches to academic studying and learning. In this refreshing book, he breaks with tradition and encourages students to approach their assignments with creative methods. Out go the endless pages of notes, and in come charts, tables, drawings and templates that encourage students to think logically and critically about their academic work. The result is the demystification of studying and learning in higher education and a more inclusive and fulfilling experience for students. * Iria Giuffrida, William & Mary Law School, USA *This book simplifies the process of learning and working and will make learning accessible and enjoyable. Peter Lia is a rare master of his craft and every education institution should take note of his creative wisdom. * Ranjita Dhital, University of Reading, UK *This book blends supportive and inspirational material to provide students with a structured, practical and creative approach to academic assessments. It is a well structured, step-by-step guide and I would highly recommend it. * Benita Cox, Imperial College London, UK *Peter Lia's Simplify Your Study is a new resource that will be perfect for my students, as our module is all about Essential Study Skills. The book starts with a deep dive into our current inspection model, discussing some of the current pressures within the system, and comparing our inspection approach to that of other countries and sectors. It moves on to show how Ofsted and school inspections are perceived and portrayed - using first-hand accounts, academic papers, government publications, and media reports - and pulls together some of the current thinking on how the model could be improved. The author ends with her own proposals for a more meaningful and humane school accountability system. She suggests we rethink what we do, and how we do it, with a call for wide-ranging consultation leading to evidence-informed reform of the school inspection process.

Highly recommended.” Afua Hirsch, author of Brit(ish)  You’re a black man.    Aggressive. Athletic.  Feared. Fetishised.  Policed. Politicised.   It’s limiting. It’s tiring. And it’s not true.    What makes a man in the 21st century? For generations ‘being a man’ has meant behaving in a very particular way. It has meant being strong, sexually assertive and overtly heterosexual. Assumptions around masculinity have been the root cause of countless problems which, to this day, continue to affect the whole of society.  When the question of masculinity intersects with race, these assumptions too

Now, in The Estate, she shines a light on the challenges faced by so many of our citizens and provides heartwarming and inspirational stories of how they have been helped to help themselves. Book SynopsisThe West feels lost. Brexit, Trump, the coronavirus: we hurtle from one crisis to another, lacking definition, terrified that our best days are behind us. The central argument of this book is that we can only face the future with hope if we have a proper sense of tradition political, social and religious. We ignore our past at our peril. The problem, argues Tim Stanley, is that the Western tradition is anti-tradition, that we have a habit of discarding old ways and old knowledge, leaving us uncertain how to act or, even, of who we really are.In this wide-ranging book, we see how tradition can be both beautiful and useful, from the deserts of Australia to the court of nineteenth-century Japan. Some of the concepts defended here are highly controversial in the modern West: authority, nostalgia, rejection of self and the hunt for spiritual transcendence. We''ll even meet a tribe who dress up their dead relatives and invite them to tea. Stanley illustrateTrade ReviewThis is a rich and reflective book, based on wide reading and personal experience. * Literary Review *Whatever Happened to Tradition? is stuffed with marvellous vignettes… the reader is left feeling grateful for the abundance of knowledge and the ebullient conviction with which it is shared. -- Allison Pearson * Telegraph *The writer he most resembles is Roger Scruton… Since Scruton died last year, there is a vacancy for a political philosopher who will defend the traditions of this nation with all his heart and all his considerable brain. I suspect we may have found his successor. -- Allison Pearson * Telegraph *This book is brilliant. It's really radical in a way that all the other stuff that says it's radical is not. It really gives you an idea that there is something else outside this airless bubble of the self we are stuck in today. I find that kind of inspiring. -- Adam Curtis, filmmakerHe persuasively presents tradition as rooting us in the world and in society, and as subtly adaptable. -- Jane O’Grady * The Daily Telegraph *Roger Scruton’s death deprived public discourse of its most intelligent and cogent defender of tradition, but Tim Stanley’s Whatever Happened to Tradition? steps bravely into the breach. * Church Times *Tim Stanley suggests in his engaging way that fidelity to the past determines future happiness — for our civilisation, not just our souls. -- Christopher Howse * The Spectator *The book is warmly recommended...it is full of fascinating fact and anecdotes...it is such a refreshing challenge to the sad and lazy assumptions of our age. * faith.org.uk *Table of ContentsIntroduction PART ONE 1 Defining Tradition 2 The West’s War on Tradition 3 The Invention of Tradition 4 The Uses of Nostalgia PART TWO 5 Hurrah for the Old 6 Tradition and Identity 7 Tradition and Order 8 Tradition and Freedom 9 Tradition and Equality 10 Tradition and Faith Conclusion Notes Acknowledgements Index
