Book SynopsisRelativist and constructivist conceptions of truth and knowledge have become orthodoxy in vast stretches of the academic world in recent times. In his long-awaited first book, Paul Boghossian critically examines such views and exposes their fundamental flaws. Boghossian focuses on three different ways of reading the claim that knowledge is socially constructed - one as a thesis about truth and two about justification. And he rejects all three. The intuitive, common-sense view is that there is a way the world is that is independent of human opinion; and that we are capable of arriving at beliefs about how it is that are objectively reasonable, binding on anyone capable of appreciating the relevant evidence regardless of their social or cultural perspective. Difficult as these notions may be, it is a mistake to think that philosophy has uncovered powerful reasons for rejecting them. This short, lucid, witty book shows that philosophy provides rock-solid support for common sense against tTrade Reviewanyone interested in a careful assessment for the considerations for and against social constructivism would do well to begin with Boghossian's book. * Mark McEvoy, Metaphilosophy *Fear of Knowledge is a clear and compelling work. * Travis Dumsday, Science Et Esprit *This is a great book for a seminar or discussion group. And its about time that someone wrote it. Happily, it was someone with Boghossians clarity, verve, and panache. * Graham Priest, Review of Metaphysics 25/07/07 *...the book does a fine job of assessing in brief compass the sort of relativism/constructivism advocated by Rorty and his fellow travelers, and Boghossian's sophisticated and careful arguments against that Rortian view are often ingenious and invariably telling. Aimed at non-specialists, Fear of Knowledge may well suceed in distancing those who are enamored of "postmodern relativism"...from their postmodern enthusiasms. * Harvey Siegel, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews *If only Boghossian's eminently reasonable book were required reading for every freshman considering entrance into the humanities... * Ars Disputandi *In both subject matter and execution, this book promises to become a small classic of philosophical analysis. * Choice *For all its sophistication and erudition, the writing is remarkably clear, free of specialized jargon, and accessible to nonspecialist readers. * Choice *...lucid and effective ... * Times Literary Supplement *This is a book that can be read in an afternoon and thought about for a lifetime. * Wall Street Journal *...a tour de force: subtle and originalbut accessible enough to be read by anyone with an interest in the subject. * Wall Street Journal *...this is an important book that should be widely read. * Philosophers' Magazine *Boghossian has written an excellent book ... it contains relentless exposures of confusion, falsehood, and incoherence. * John R. • Oxford University Press Defining Environmental Justice

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book will appeal to anyone interested in environmental politics, environmental movements, and justice theory. The basic task of this book is to explore what, exactly, is meant by ''justice'' in definitions of environmental and ecological justice. It examines how the term is used in both self-described environmental justice movements and in theories of environmental and ecological justice. The central argument is that a theory and practice of environmental justice necessarily includes distributive conceptions of justice, but must also embrace notions of justice based in recognition, capabilities, and participation. Throughout, the goal is the development of a broad, multi-faceted, yet integrated notion of justice that can be applied to both relations regarding environmental risks in human populations and relations between human communities and non-human nature.Trade ReviewSchlosberg's definition of environmental justice is theoretically grounded and empirically informed, resulting in a thorough and nuanced account... [T]he book is essential reading for researchers and students working on environmental justice, and will be of interest to justice theorists more generally... Schlosberg's account of environmental justice...is definitive. * Perspectives on Politics *David Schlosberg's Defining Environmental Justice is political theory at its best, providing an invaluable review of the contemporary literature, subverting traditional political categories and distinctions, and suggesting new directions for politics and policy.... Defining Environmental Justice breaks important ground not only in advancing political theory's engagement with nature but in crafting a theoretical and political framework that draws together moral consideration for nonhuman nature with environmental justice concerns... [Schlosberg] offers a powerful critique of liberal theories of justice and their often singular focus on distribution, offering a more inclusive notion of justice that embraces recognition, capabilities, and participatory democracy. * Ethics and International Affairs *Defining Environmental Justice should be required reading for anyone interested in understanding the environmental justice movement. David Schlosberg's careful, thoughtful study makes sense of the often perplexing notion of justice at the heart of the movement. Drawing on and extending recent innovations in justice theory, he argues that the "justice" of environmental justice is best understood not as a unitary concept but as a set of multi-layered, interconnected discourses encompassing distributive issues, recognition, participation and community functioning. He further makes the provocative claim that this expansive, plural discourse of justice can usefully be applied to humans' relationship with nature itself. The result is a richly nuanced and insightful contribution to the literature on social movements, justice theory and contemporary environmentalism. * Kim Smith, Associate Professor of Political Science, Carleton College *Table of ContentsPART ONE: JUSTICE IN THEORY AND PRACTICE ; 1. • Oxford University Press Selling the Korean War

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHow presidents spark and sustain support for wars remains an enduring and significant problem. Korea was the first limited war the U.S. experienced in the contemporary period - the first recent war fought for something less than total victory. In Selling the Korean War , Steven Casey explores how President Truman and then Eisenhower tried to sell it to the American public.Based on a massive array of primary sources, Casey subtly explores the government''s selling activities from all angles. He looks at the halting and sometimes chaotic efforts of Harry Truman and Dean Acheson, Dwight Eisenhower and John Foster Dulles. He examines the relationships that they and their subordinates developed with a host of other institutions, from Congress and the press to Hollywood and labor. And he assesses the complex and fraught interactions between the military and war correspondents in the battlefield theater itself. From high politics to bitter media spats, Casey guides the reader through the domesTrade ReviewSteven Casey has drawn a masterly analysis of what is certain to become the standard work on its subject.... The whole study is, moreover, conveyed with real verve and at a cracking pace.... An exceptionally good book which does full justice to the complexity of the comestic politics of the Korean War and the rold of the media, official institutions, and politicians in shaping public opinion. * Matthew Jones, Journal of American Studies *Casey provides the best account to date of the relationship between domestic politics and the war in Korea.... His book is a significant contribution to the literature on the Korean conflict and the relationship between politics and diplomacy during the early years of the Cold War. Most impressive is the author's ability to place the war in a broader context. * Thomas W. Devine, H-Diplo Roundtable Reviews *As a study on the complex relationship among the executive branch, congress, the media, and the public within a constitutional democracy, Dr. Casey's Selling the Korean War is unparalleled in both detail and insight. It is a major addition to the literature--in any language--on the Korean War, and merits a careful read by all who share an interest in the subject. * Sung-Yoon Lee, H-Diplo Roundtable Reviews *This careful study not only fills a notable gap in the literature on the Korean War, it also makes a valuable addition to the short list of books dealing with the conflict's impact on domestic affairs inside the United States. Although Casey's main purpose is to explain ' the government's efforts to sell the war at home,' he achieves much more in persuasively challenging the conventional wisdom about well-known key events and advancing perceptive new interpretations of old issues. * James I. Matray, H-Diplo Roundtable Reviews *This well-written and thoughtfully argued study...warrants reading not only by specialists on the Korean War but also by those interested in the crucial foreign policy debates which occurred during the final third of Truman's presidency. * Wilson D. • Oxford University Press The God Strategy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume offers a timely and dynamic study of the rise of religion in American politics, examining the public messages of political leaders over the past seventy-five years. The authors show that U.S. politics today is defined by a calculated, deliberate, and partisan use of faith that is unprecedented in modern politics. Beginning with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, America has seen a no-holds-barred religious politics that seeks to attract voters, identify and attack enemies, and solidify power. Domke and Coe identify a set of religious signals sent by both Republicans and Democrats in speeches, party platforms, proclamations, visits to audiences of faith, and even celebrations of Christmas. The updated edition of this ground-breaking book includes a new preface, an updated analysis of the last Bush administration, as well as a new final chapter on the Jeremiah Wright controversy, the candidacies of Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin, and Barack Obama''s victory.Trade ReviewThe God Strategy is a sobering look at just how deeply imbedded religion has become in the contemporary American political psyche. Both the person of faith and the non-believer should fear what is revealed in this carefully crafted review of modern campaign strategies to 'get the God vote'. Domke and Coe demonstrate, with stunningly clear examples, just how the union of government and religion tends to degrade the integrity of both. * Rev. Barry Lynn, Executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State *Religion has become central to American politics. The God Strategy is a superb overview of what happened and how it has impacted our democracy. David Domke and Kevin Coe have done the nation a service. * George Lakoff, author of Don't Think of an Elephant! *Domke and Coe have done a masterful job of giving us insight into the mix of religion and politics. The God Strategy taught me much about a field I thought I knew. Anyone who wants to understand how the deeply religious character of America could be used to effect coming elections needs to read this book. * Joel Hunter, Pastor and Member, Board of Directors of the National Association of Evangelicals *The God Strategy offers an intriguing look at what has become one of the most powerful shaping forces in American political life. Like it or not, religion has for years been establishing the parameters of public debate. As Domke and Coe make clear, this is unlikely to change anytime soon. * Ron Reagan *Table of ContentsIntroduction A New Religious Politics ; Chapter One One Nation Under God, Divisible ; Chapter Two Political Priests ; Chapter Three God and Country ; Chapter Four Acts of Communion ; Chapter Five Morality Politics ; Chapter Six Religious Politics and Democratic Vitality ; Chapter Seven Act II ; Appendixes A to E

  • Oxford University Press Discourse on Civility and Barbarity

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn recent years scholars have begun to question the usefulness of the category of ''''religion'''' to describe a distinctive form of human experience and behavior. In his last book, The Ideology of Religious Studies (OUP 2000), Timothy Fitzgerald argued that ''''religion'''' was not a private area of human existence that could be separated from the public realm and that the study of religion as such was thus impossibility. In this new book he examines a wide range of English-language texts to show how religion became transformed from a very specific category indigenous to Christian culture into a universalist claim about human nature and society. These claims, he shows, are implied by and frequently explicit in theories and methods of comparative religion. But they are also tacitly reproduced throughout the humanities in the relatively indiscriminate use of ''''religion'''' as an a priori valid cross-cultural analytical concept, for example in historiography, sociology, and social anthTrade ReviewTimothy Fitzgerald is one of the most important scholars raising questions about the category of religion today, and in this essay he makes significant new contributions. He broadens the range of the discussion to include important but neglected categories that arose along with the category of religion, most notably the secular and the political, and he traces the emergence of this discourse in English-language texts dealing with travel and governance, showing that they emerge much later than is widely assumed. Anyone seriously interested in religion simply must take seriously Fitzgerald's central claim: it is wrong to think of religion as something that exists in and of itself, as an observable, objective domain essentially distinct from other domains such as politics and economics. * Gregory Alles, Professor of Religious Studies, McDaniel College and author of Religious Studies: A Global View *This important book continues Fitzgerald's investigations into the rhetorical uses and abuses of religion" and related terms. Here Fitzgerald leads us into close readings of primary texts from the early modern era, and shows that "religion" and "politics" and "economics" are not value-neutral descriptive categories, but modern inventions that serve the interests of a new kind of state and a new kind of market. With relentless logic, Fitzgerald cuts through the confusions, anachronisms, and nonsense that surround the modern use of these terms. In so doing, he helps us see that the way that Western social sciences have constructed the world is not inevitable, and that we need not see non-Western others through only one lens. This book will be of tremendous benefit not only to those in religious studies, but to political scientists, sociologists, and historians as well. * William T. Cavanaugh, Associate Professor of Theology, University of St. Thomas *In this perceptive study, Fitzgerald shows us just how the assumption that religion is essentially about personal belief becomes a crucial step in the construction of 'religion' as the name of a universal human experience. His emphasis is on changing configurations rather than binaries, which leads him to argue that in taking 'the religious' as the binary opposite of 'the secular' one is subscribing to an ideological enterprise. Discourse on Civility and Barbarity is an important contribution to the growing critical literature on the idea of Religion as an essentialized category. * Talal Asad, Author of Formations of the Secular *Table of ContentsNOTES; BIBLIOGRAPHY; INDEX

Book SynopsisHere is a vividly written and compact overview of the brilliant, flawed, and quarrelsome group of lawyers, politicians, merchants, military men, and clergy known as the Founding Fathers--who got as close to the ideal of the Platonic philosopher-kings as American or world history has ever seen. In The Founding Fathers Reconsidered, R. B. Bernstein reveals Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton, and the other founders not as shining demigods but as imperfect human beings--people much like us--who nevertheless achieved political greatness. They emerge here as men who sought to transcend their intellectual world even as they were bound by its limits, men who strove to lead the new nation even as they had to defer to the great body of the people and learn with them the possibilities and limitations of politics. Utilizing the results from the Black Youth Project, a groundbreaking nationwide survey, Cohen focuses on what young Black Americans actually experience and think--and underscores the political repercussions. Featuring stories from cities across the country, she reveals that black youth want, in large part, what most Americans want--a good job, a fulfilling life, safety, respect, and equality. But while this generation has much in common with the rest of America, they also believe that equality does not yet exist, at least not in their lives. Book SynopsisThe hidden history of African uranium and what it means—for a state, an object, an industry, a workplace—to be “nuclear.”Uranium from Africa has long been a major source of fuel for nuclear power and atomic weapons, including the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. In 2003, after the infamous “yellow cake from Niger,” Africa suddenly became notorious as a source of uranium, a component of nuclear weapons. But did that admit Niger, or any of Africa's other uranium-producing countries, to the select society of nuclear states? Does uranium itself count as a nuclear thing? In this book, Gabrielle Hecht lucidly probes the question of what it means for something—a state, an object, an industry, a workplace—to be “nuclear.” Hecht shows that questions about being nuclear—a state that she calls “nuclearity”—lie at the heart of today's global nuclear order and the relationships between “developing n

It was intended to be the world's environmental conscience, an anchor institution that established norms and researched policy, leaving it to other organizations to carry out its recommendations. In this book, Maria Ivanova offers a detailed account of UNEP's origin and history. Ivanova counters the common criticism that UNEP was deficient by design, arguing that UNEP has in fact delivered on much (though not all) of its mandate.

University of Notre Dame Press Decentralization and Democracy in Latin America

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe nine essays in this collection represent the first book-length treatment of one of the major changes that have shaped Latin America since independence: decentralization of the state. Contributors argue that though the assignment of political, fiscal, and administrative duties to subnational governments has been one of the most important political developments in Latin America, it is also one of the most overlooked. This volume is divided into three sections. Part one presents an overview of the topic by the editors; part two considers the political origins of decentralization; and part three examines decentralization and economic reforms.Decentralization and Democracy in Latin America explores the causes of decentralization in six significant case studies: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Venezuela. Shorter analyses of Uruguay and Peru are also included. The essays in this volume find substantial common ground across regime types, historical periodsTrade Review"The book... adopts a predominantly political focus in its analysis of decentralization. The concentration is on process rather than outcome—and what outcomes are discussed are those at the level of intergovernmental relations, rather than the results on the ground. This approach has the virtue of concentrating the analytical focus, and the editors have done a splendid job in ensuring that the various contributors not only focus on the same issues and adopt broadly but not entirely the same approach, but even engage in a certain level of interchange—occasionally a mild disagreement—between the chapters. The book also has a strong sense of history—something often lacking among the more committed advocates of decentralization." —Perspectives on Politics“The authors of Decentralization and Democracy in Latin America are primarily concerned with understanding the dynamics of state reform and decentralization in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela." —Latin American Research Review"Montero, Samuels, and the contributors are to be congratulated for producing a volume that is coherent, integrated, and timely. Graduate students and professionals will not only find it useful empirically and analytically but also will consider it a mine for endless propositions and hypotheses for testing and investigating. Overall, Decentralization and Democracy in Latin America is a valuable and solid volume." —Perspectives on Political Science"This edited volume brings together some of the finest works on decentralization in Latin America produced in the U.S. in recent years. The book is sound, both theoretically and empirically, and the different chapters nicely complement each other. ...this book is likely to become part of the reading lists of Latin American politics seminars." —The Americas"This book deals with an interesting topic, but at the same time offers the reader an excellent starting point for understanding the phenomenon in its contextual and comparative dimension without losing the particular development of each individual country. It is without doubt a well-written book." —Political Studies Review

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn this study of the politics of economic reform, Javier Corrales argues that the key struggle is between the executive and the ruling party. He puts this argument to the test by examining closely the events in Argentina and Venezuela during the 1990s.Trade Review“In Presidents Without Parties, Javier Corrales makes a significant contribution to the growing literature on the comparative political economy of state and market reform. . . . By weaving together arguments from the political science literature on parties and executives with analytical perspectives drawn from rational choice and public choice approaches, this book is ‘controversial’ in the best sense by challenging much of the conventional wisdom and scholarship on the politics of economic reform.”—William C. Smith,University of Miami“This book represents the field of comparative politics at its very best. Javier Corrales argues compellingly that the nature of Executive-ruling party relations is key to understanding the sustainability of market reforms in middle-income developing countries—an insight that has been steadily borne out over the past few years in Latin America. Perhaps most impressive is the amount of original thinking and fieldwork research that went into this project. The book is a welcome addition to any reading list for courses in economic development, comparative politics, and Latin American studies.”—Carol Wise,University of Southern California“This book will be a required reference for anyone interested in how reform programs are adopted—or rejected—in Latin America. Venezuela and Argentina are fascinating and troubling cases of the political dilemmas faced by presidents in the ebb and flow of political and economic processes.”—Janet Kelly,Caracas, Venezuela“By focusing on the relationship between the executive branch and the ruling political party, Corrales provides an interesting and ambitious explanation for the recent institutional demise of the two nations. While the details of this relationship differ for Argentina and Venezuela, the overall thesis which Corrales advances is very appealing. . . . Corrales's views do justice to Latin America’s complexity—a complexity which, sadly, is frequently misinterpreted or ignored. . . . He presents an important model for understanding the crisis of governability in Latin America. This is no small feat.”—Leo Zaibert Times Literary Supplement“Corrales does a good job of explaining several ways in which executive party relations influence reform dynamics.”—C. H. Blake CHOICE“The publication of Javier Corrales’s excellent book is very timely. In Presidents Without Parties, Javier Corrales has provided an excellent analysis of the distinct outcome of economic reform efforts in Argentina and Venezuela.”—Mark P. Jones Perspectives on Politics“This is an excellent book. On occasion it is a bit ostentatiously academic and that might put off undergraduates; but, graduate students and their mentors should find it a valuable contribution to our understanding of modern Latin America.”—Joseph Tulchin E.I.A.L.“All scholars working on the topic of policy reform should read this outstanding book, as should all students of Argentina and Venezuelan politics and economics.”—William C. Book SynopsisDemocratisation does not ensure better representation for everyone, and some sectors of society not equipped to take advantage of these opportunities. Small industry in Mexico, Kenneth Shadlen shows, is an example of a sector whose representation decreased during democratisation. Shadlen uses interviews and archival research to provide new evidenceTrade Review“This first-rate account of small industry politics in Mexico shows how democratization can actually hinder effective representation for weak actors. Meticulously researched and argued, Democratization Without Representation sets the standard for the Mexican case and will be required reading for students of business politics more generally.”—Strom C. Thacker,Boston University“This fine book makes an important contribution both to the comparative literature on the quality of democracy in post-transition settings and to the growing literature on comparative business politics in Latin America. By deftly weaving together new archival evidence and interview material, Shadlen provides a fresh—and provocative—angle on the challenges that free-market economic reforms and political democratization pose for small business in developing countries. The book makes a convincing case that the democratization of authoritarian-corporatist regimes can ironically weaken the representation of small business in the policy arena. This, in turn, has sobering implications both for the quality of democracy and for overall economic performance, especially in terms of employment generation.”—Richard Snyder,Brown University“This criticism aside, the book is a valuable contribution to debates about business, democracy, and development.”—Peter Kingstone Political Science Quarterly“These two monographs on government-business relations in contemporary Mexico (Shadlen’s Democratization Without Representation and Macleod’s Downsizing the State) share the same publisher as well as the virtues of careful research and documentation, creative synthesis of theoretical strands from political science, economic sociology and new institutional economics, an explicit comparative angle and accessibility for non-area specialists. These books can be confidently recommended as texts in graduate courses on comparative politics, sociology of economic organizations, business management and public administration.”—Kun-Chin Lin Political Studies Review“The book represents a thorough and comprehensive study of small industry politics in Mexico, drawing from more than 100 interviews and extensive archival research. . . . [The book makes] an important contribution to the study of Mexican political economy and will be of great interest to scholars of that discipline.”—Caroline Beer Perspectives on Politics“Given the extent and depth of the author’s contribution to understanding small industrialists from the inside out, Democratization Without Representation is very much a worthwhile read. Book SynopsisIn the turbulent years before World War II, U.S. strategic planners struggled with the question of Canadian security. Franklin Roosevelt took a unique interest in America's northern neighbor and persistently encouraged Canada to do more to ensure its own defense especially through alliance with the U.S. This aspect of foreign policy resulted in a delicate balancing act between U.S. officials who sought to downplay the strategic importance of Canada and Canadian leaders who saw American overtures as a threat to Canadian sovereignty. The first chapter discusses Roosevelt's early efforts between 1933 and 1937 to increase Canadian interest in North American defense. The second follows events up to the outbreak of war. Although Canada had been seen as part of the rival British Empire, Canada now became a natural ally in hemispheric security efforts.
