North Atlantic Books,U.S. Just Dope: A Leading Attorney's Personal Journey
Book SynopsisFor readers of Dopesick and In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, a celebrated cannabis attorney''s personal look at the War on Drugs and what comes next for the drug legalization movementGetting high is something most of us do, and in many cases do safely--yet drugs remain a singular public enemy. In a ranging blend of memoir, pop culture, policy critique, and social analysis, LA-based criminal defense attorney Allison Margolin explores why--and what we can do about it.Informed by Margolin’s experiences as a drug user, advocate, and the daughter of California’s most renowned (and infamous) cannabis attorney, Just Dope offers a look at where our current drug policy fails. It exposes the true history of drug prohibition in the United States, sharing why it started, how it evolved, and where it stands now. And it looks unflinchingly at the false dichotomy between “good” drugs and “bad” drugs and Margolin’s experience with programs like D.A.R.E that misguidedly ask you to “Just Say No.”For readers of All Day is a Long Time and In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, Just Dope is an experiential tour-de-force of personal essay and whip-smart policy critique—and a vital call to knowledge and action.

Charlesbridge Publishing,U.S. In Defense of Liberal Democracy: What We Need to
Book SynopsisIn Defense of Liberal Democracy is a clarion call for today''s divided time: a bold reaffirmation of the liberal democratic principles that have carried America through each crisis in its history--and can do so again.Merging expert historical, political, and economic analysis, In Defense of Liberal Democracy shows how our recent technological revolution--what high-profile economist Manuel Hinds calls the Connectivity Revolution--has led to a crisis of divisiveness. Assessing the angry rhetoric and polarization of current political and social discourse in the US, Hinds considers the dangers of seeking populist solutions to our current upheaval and shows how the traditions and institutions of liberal democracy restored prosperity, freedom, and social equity during the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and other periods of political instability. Hinds examines our national past and present (up to and including the 2020 presidential election) to illustrate how current events can be as dramatic as any historical legacy in warning us of the danger of abandoning our democratic principles.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Congressional Contempt Power: History, Practice &
Book SynopsisCongress''s contempt power is the means by which Congress responds to certain acts that in its view obstruct the legislative process. Contempt may be used either to coerce compliance, to punish the contemnor, and/or to remove the obstruction. Although arguably any action that directly obstructs the effort of Congress to exercise its constitutional powers may constitute a contempt, in recent times the contempt power has most often been employed in response to non-compliance with a duly issued congressional subpoena whether in the form of a refusal to appear before a committee for purposes of providing testimony, or a refusal to produce required documents. This book examines the source of the contempt power, reviews the historical development of the early case law, outlines the statutory and common law basis for Congress''s contempt power, and analyses the procedures associated with inherent contempt, criminal contempt, and the civil enforcement of subpoenas.

This book examines Latin America as a national security threat with a focus on Iran''s increasing activities with Venezuela; drug-trafficking related violence in Mexico and Columbia; and Cuba''s lack of cooperation in antiterrorism efforts.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Political Ecology of Soil Erosion in West Africa:
Book SynopsisThis book looks at theories of nature-society relations and development, applied to soil erosion and environmental change in West Africa, and Ghana. Acknowledging the importance of power relations for environmental management, the book begins with an examination of the field of political ecology, alternately the "political economy of the environment." It assesses the role of this sub-discipline within geography and anthropology, and its role in practical conservation planning and the management of soil erosion. Political ecology tilts towards a structuralist approach, hence social theories (actor oriented studies and structuration theory) sensitive to actor analysis are examined as complementary frameworks. Structuration theory is discussed as attempting to tie the concepts of structure and actor together and provide a basis for the study of political, economic, socio-cultural and environmental contexts. These theories connect to the issues of livelihood and household analysis, gender relations and the economic, ecological and Green political variants of the paradigm of sustainable development.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Political Ecology of Agricultural History in
Book SynopsisThis book takes an incisive, political ecology perspective of the development of agriculture in the West African nation of Ghana (formerly the British colony of the Gold Coast), focusing on agricultural, socio-cultural, economic, political and environmental issues during the pre-colonial (pre-16th century), colonial and post colonial periods (after 1957, up until 1992, the start of the last Republic). This integrated approach for the study of agricultural development and environmental change is very relevant to the Ghanaian context. Here, complex historical, political and socio-cultural factors have been combined, within a fairly short period, to contribute to an environmental metamorphosis. A complicated mosaic of indeterminate vegetation climaxes, such as depleted and secondary forests, derived savannah and savannah woodland, has gradually replaced the primeval rain forest, deciduous forest and savannah. Problems include soil erosion and desertification risk. This, largely due to human agency, is explainable by examining the political and economic relations behind the resource exploitation methods devised by the different actors in the political, economic and social system.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Safe School Initiative: Attack Prevention &
Book SynopsisFollowing the attack at Columbine High School in April 1999, the Secret Service and the Department of Education initiated a study of thinking, planning and other pre-attack behaviours engaged in by attackers who carried out school shootings. That study, the Safe School Initiative, was pursued under a partnership between the Secret Service and the Department of Education. This book examines the Safe School Initiative, whose objective is to attempt to identify information that could be obtainable, or "knowable", prior to an attack. That information would then be analysed and evaluated to produce a factual, accurate knowledge based on targeted school attacks. This knowledge could be used to help communities across the country to formulate policies and strategies aimed at preventing school-based attacks.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Vietnam: Service Sector Growth
Book SynopsisThis book provides an overview and examination of the Vietnamese services sector. Vietnam is growing rapidly as it transitions from a state-planned economy to a hybrid economy with an expanded private sector. Besides broadening its international trade relationships, in recent years Vietnam has committed to liberalising its industries and strengthening its intellectual property laws through bilateral treaties, regional associations, and accession to the World Trade Organization. Service industries account for a growing share of Vietnam''s economy, as new businesses seek services like banking and logistics while consumers with rising income demand education, retail, and telecommunication services. Liberalisation and foreign investment have increased the supply of services in Vietnam, but many industries are still hampered by shortages of skilled workers and good infrastructure, and by a weak business environment in which regulations impede commerce and state-owned enterprises have many advantages.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Moroccan Culture in the 21st Century:
Book SynopsisWhat does Moroccan culture mean to a group of Moroccan academics at this decisive conjuncture and turning point of the 21st Century characterised by the advent and the shaking impact of the Arab Spring? How does culture, broken down in terms of intergenerational values, cultural identity related to language, language behaviour, socio-political debate, the meaning of space and place, and the meaning of ancient festivals fare in today''s Moroccan socio-cultural and socio-political contexts? Marrying theory and fieldwork, the authors in the six chapters that constitute the present book volume have tackled the above themes insightfully and discussed them by using in-depth analysis and investigation. They have given a firsthand, autochthonous account of aspects of Moroccan culture in the wake of the recent and still reverberating events that have swept across much of North Africa and part of the Middle East.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Maritime Territorial Disputes Involving China
Book SynopsisThis book presents policy and oversight issues for Congress arising from (1) maritime territorial disputes involving China in the South China Sea (SCS) and East China Sea (ECS) and (2) an additional dispute over whether China has a right under international law to regulate U.S. and other foreign military activities in its 200-nautical-mile maritime Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). China is a party to multiple maritime territorial disputes in the SCS and ECS, including, in particular, disputes over the Paracel Islands, Spratly Islands, and Scarborough Shoal in the SCS, and the Senkaku Islands in the ECS. Maritime territorial disputes involving China in the SCS and ECS date back many years, and have periodically led to incidents and periods of increased tension. The disputes have again intensified in the past few years, leading to numerous confrontations and incidents, and heightened tensions between China and other countries in the region, particularly Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Change in the Middle East: Implications & U.S.
Book SynopsisThe political change and unrest that have swept through the Middle East and North Africa since early 2011 are likely to have profound consequences for the pursuit of long-standing U.S. policy goals in the region with regard to regional security, global energy supplies, U.S. military access, bilateral trade and investment, counter-proliferation, counter-terrorism, and the promotion of human rights. The profound changes in the region may alter the framework in which these goals are pursued and challenge the basic assumptions that have long guided U.S. policy. This book assesses some of the policy implications of recent and ongoing events in the region, with a focus on Egypt, Iran, Syria, Libya, Israel, Tunisia, and Bahrain.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Government Transparency & Secrecy: Measures,
Book SynopsisFrom the beginning of the American federal government, Congress has required executive branch agencies to release or otherwise make available government information and records. Some scholars and statesmen, including James Madison, thought access to information -- commonly referred to in contemporary vernacular as "transparency" -- was an essential cornerstone of democratic governance. Today, the federal government attempts to balance access to information with the need to protect certain information (including national security information and trade secrets) in order to achieve transparency. As a consequence, access and protection are often in tension with one another. This book first assesses the meaning of transparency and subsequently examines the statutes, initiatives, requirements, and other actions that make information more available to the public or protect if from public release. Also discussed is whether existing transparency initiatives are effective in reaching their stated goals.

However, the process by which a bill can become law is rarely predictable and can vary significantly from bill to bill. In fact, for many bills, the process will not follow the sequence of congressional stages that are often understood to make up the legislative process. This book presents a look at each of the common stages through which a bill may move, though complications and variations abound in practice.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Victims & Executioners: American Political
Book SynopsisIn recent years, much has been written on how the moral meaning and significance of the Holocaust has been appropriated in popular and political discourses in the United States. Authors such as Peter Novick and Norman Finkelstein have argued that the Holocaust has been "Americanised", often detracting from its European origins and the problematic moral questions it poses. This work goes further by focusing on the particular framing of the Holocaust in U.S. official and public discourses with particular reference to foreign policy debate and how this contrasts with the "civil religion" of Holocaust commemoration in the United States. It traces the way in which such debates have been structured around various assumptions made about the victims on the one hand, and executioners on the other. It also traces how the relationship between the Jewish victims and German executioners in American public discourse has been affected by pragmatic and political considerations at various historical junctures, particularly those concerning the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Israel.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Global Trends 2030: Transformational Trajectories
Book SynopsisThis book forecasts the world of 2030, which predictions estimate, will be radically transformed from our world today. By 2030, no country, whether the U.S., China, or any other large country, will be a hegemonic power. The empowerment of individuals and diffusion of power among states and from states to informal networks will have a dramatic impact, largely reversing the historic rise of the West since 1750, restoring Asia''s weight in the global economy, and ushering in a new era of "democratisation" at the international and domestic level. In addition to individual empowerment and the diffusion of state power, two other megatrends will shape our world out to 2030: demographic patterns, especially rapid ageing; and growing resource demands which, in the cases of food and water, might lead to scarcities. These trends, which are virtually certain, exist today, but during the next 1520 years will gain much greater momentum. Underpinning the megatrends are tectonic shifts (ie: critical changes to key features of our global environment that will affect how the world "works").

Nova Science Publishers Inc European Integration: Building Europe
Book SynopsisThe main objective of this publication is establishing an understanding of the process of European integration and hence the current European Union that has resulted from this process. As this is a complicated development that includes many different areas, this book will focus on the main fields in which the integration has been settled; politics, economy, law, and social aspects. Thus, a comprehensive approach to all these fields will provide both general and professional readers with sufficient knowledge to understand the process and form their own opinion about it. Each chapter has been developed independently, and hence can be read autonomously in order to understand a specific topic, policy, or problem in the European Union. Reading of the full book will provide a wide perspective of the process, as the chapters are connected; forming different groups based on similar themes, the combination of these wider groups providing the general approach to the whole process of European integration.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Irans Ballistic Missile & Space Launch Programs:
Book SynopsisWhy does Iranian acquisition of ballistic missiles or Iran''s pursuit of a space launch capability matter, especially to the Congress? For decades, most in Congress have viewed Iran with concern because of its nuclear program and its support of anti-U.S. and anti-Israel militant movements in the region. Although it is not certain that Iran has made the decision to develop a nuclear weapon, it is taking steps to drastically reduce the time needed to obtain nuclear weapons should a decision be made to do so. It is the prospect of an Iranian nuclear weapon mated to an effective missile delivery capability that is especially worrisome to most. This book examines the current and prospective Iranian capabilities that challenge U.S. national security interests, with a focus on its ballistic missile and space launch programs.

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc The Political Thought of African Independence: An
Book SynopsisThe Political Thought of African Independence: An Anthology of Sources brilliantly frames the debates that captivated the world as former European colonies in Africa began their transition to sovereign rule in the 1950s and ’60s. Its wealth of key documents are enhanced by Gregory Smulewicz-Zucker's General Introduction, part introductions, headnotes, and annotations, providing needed contextual information and supports for readers.Trade Review"A great accomplishment. Not only does Smulewicz-Zucker's anthology bring together a diverse array of sources (54 in total), it also weaves together what are more or less canonical sources in twentieth-century African political thought with many unexpected, yet equally rich and illuminating, items. Smulewicz-Zucker has chosen material from all of the continent’s major regions, including . . . documents from more than two-dozen different countries, international and regional organizations, and conferences. Moreover, he has organized the material in a way that creates an engaging and powerful narrative articulating the complicated history of African independence. This outstanding collection will surely find its way into undergraduate courses in fields as diverse as African history, international relations, comparative politics, and even political theory." —Jeffrey Ahlman, Smith College, author of Living with Nkrumahism: Nation, State, and Pan-Africanism in Ghana (Ohio University Press, 2017)"These African voices will expose readers to the events and ideas that gave shape to African political thought—from aspirations for power within the Anglican church and control over defining local and national cultures, to asserting national identities and conceptions of regional and continental unity. Taken together, they open a window onto the myriad ideas of, and struggles for, independence in Africa." —Benjamin Talton, Temple University"Smulewicz-Zucker’s Political Thought of African Independence is an excellent collection. I'm not only impressed by the selection of texts but also moved by a number of the pieces included in the book." —Bill Fletcher Jr., former president of TransAfrica Forum"Smulewicz-Zucker's anthology of primary sources pertinent to the political imagination of, and ideologies informing, African independence is . . . a very welcome resource for teachers and researchers everywhere. The collection is vast and quite comprehensive, comprising four parts, each with a short introductory essay. The assemblage of such a diverse range of texts, traversing the length and breadth of the continent, is an effective way to challenge the teleology of the nation-state. The mini-introductions offer teachers numerous avenues for the exploration of the materials in the classroom setting, and for the development of lines of questioning for student writing assignments. By broadening the conversation beyond the political realm to incorporate religious, social, cultural, and (to a far lesser extent) gendered aspirations of autonomy and agency, Smulewicz-Zucker has provided a highly teachable and engaging pedagogical product." —Benjamin N. Hackett Publishing Co, Inc The Accessible Federalist: A Modern English
Book SynopsisThis modern English version of sixteen of Publius' most important essays is designed to set forth their argument in the clearest terms: the promise of the U.S. Constitution. Though The Federalist was itself written for the same purpose, the complexity of its prose and the meaning of several of its key terms have now passed out of currency—with the result that the original texts are now less able to communicate effectively to the uninitiated than they were when the first essays were published in 1787. Faithfully re-phrased for modern readers by an established and respected scholar of American political thought—and supplemented by quotations from the original texts—the selected essays included here offer today’s readers a judicious and effective first approach to The Federalist's most important ideas.Trade Review"I assign students to read The Federalist so they will grasp the ideas. But too often they can't get past the words. Adam Seagrave's The Accessible Federalist will enable readers of all backgrounds to understand the ideas that shaped the Constitution. It will also spur many readers onward to study and appreciate the original texts. I hope it gets wide attention and classroom use." —James H. Read, Professor of Political Science, College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University

Nova Science Publishers Inc Federal Emergency Management: Elements &
Book SynopsisThe federal government plays a significant role in emergency management, which generally refers to activities associated with avoiding and responding to natural and human-caused hazards. Emergency management in the United States is highly decentralised and contextual in nature: activities often involve multiple jurisdictions as well as a vast number of agencies, non-governmental organisations, and private sector entities. In addition, the number and type of actors involved in an incident will vary tremendously depending on the context and severity of the event. Similarly, the legal framework through which emergency management functions and activities are authorised is also decentralised and stems from multiple authorities. This book describes the process for requesting federal assistance for major disasters, emergencies, and fire suppression, with a focus on Presidential Policy Directive 8 and the National Preparedness System; the Federal Stafford Act Disaster Assistance; and federal disaster recovery programs.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Curing Analytic Pathologies: Pathways to Improved
Book SynopsisA wide range of problems have contributed to the unease currently pervading the Intelligence Community. A significant number of the most serious problems result from shortcomings in intelligence analysis rather than from defects in collection, organisation, or management. The obvious and very public failures exemplified by the surprise attacks of September 11, 2001 and by the flawed National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) of 2002 on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMD) have resulted in a series of investigations and reports that have attempted to identify the causes of those failures and to recommend corrective actions. This book examines and explores the pathways for improved intelligence analysis and curing analytic pathologies in intelligence gathering.
