Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Tipping Point: Britain, Brexit and Security in

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBritain is facing big security challenges in the 2020s. The decade to come will not be as favourable as the two past decades. For a country as ‘globalised’ as Britain, security challenges cover a wide spectrum - from terrorism, international crime and cyber attack through to the prospects of war in its own continent or even, again, for its own survival. Brexit has entered these equations and turned them into a political tipping point, from which there is no hiding and no turning back. Tipping Point looks at the immediate and long-term security challenges Britain faces - from security and foreign policy to the crisis of liberal democracy - as well as Britain's security capabilities.Trade ReviewThe world is unstable and dangerous. Yet the UK's sense of future purpose and direction is unclear. There is little consensus, indeed the country is divided. This exceptional book makes a compelling and in some respects surprising case for a strategic surge, an innovative national strategy to guide us through the post-Brexit era. The UK must find a route through a gathering storm, and fast. To do this we need some statesmen and some old-fashioned honest statecraft. If those who have our future in their hands are uncertain about what to do, it's easy. Hire Mike Clarke and Helen Ramscar, fast. * General The Lord Richards of Herstmonceux GCB, CBE, DSO, Chief of the Defence Staff, 2010-2013 *The authors brilliantly chart the road ahead to the Tipping Point: the Brexit end of a United Europe just as America's "moral leadership" becomes a void, and China fills the gap. They tell us with striking insight how to survive and get to the other side. * Lord Saatchi, Former Conservative Party Chairman *In a period of significant change in Britain, Clarke and Ramscar have outlined some of the key security challenges facing the United Kingdom in the coming decades. The questions raised in this book, as well as the authors’ call for a new emphasis on long-term strategic thought, merit our attention. * Henry A. Kissinger *’Tipping Point’ captures the core dilemma that faces Britain today: we once thought we knew who we were, how the world worked and our place in it - even if there were lean as well as better times - but now we have to understand that we are adrift and in peril. The political thinking, the instruments of power, and the alliances that kept Britain afloat for decades either no longer work or are running on fumes, and what lies ahead jeopardizes our security and prosperity unless major action is taken. Brexit is the prism through which this will be viewed, but Brexit is neither the cause nor the solution. Unless Britain now understands and accepts some uncomfortable truths, sets aside outmoded policy, capability and method, and invests leadership, energy and resources in resetting how it acts at home and on the world stage the prospects are poor. This book explains why and points to what must now be done. * General Sir Richard Barrons, KCB CBE, Former Commander, Joint Forces Command and one of the Chiefs of Staff leading UK Armed Forces. *For many of us who operate global enterprises out of the United States, we have long looked to London as a gateway to Europe. With the recent election confirming that Boris Johnson will lead Britain out of Europe early in 2020, that once dependable pathway will be blocked and the future of American business’ relationship with Britain will hang in the balance. Tipping Point, clearly explains the forces at play and the challenges facing Britain today. This understanding of global economic pressures, social forces and security vulnerabilities provides an valuable guide. Tipping Point is a must read for business leaders who seek to understand an evolving, and potentially, deteriorating Britain. Thankfully, in layman’s language, experts Michael Clarke and Helen Ramscar have written a prescription for a restored, revitalized Britain. They call for the creation of a “strategic surge” in resources and the political will to stabilize Britain and give it the chance to return as a trusted partner in the wider world. I certainly hope Tipping Point is widely read by government leaders, business executives and anyone who wishes to understand Brexit, Britain and the future of European stability. More importantly, I hope the recommendations offered by Clarke and Ramscar are adopted. Much depends on it. * Sally Susman, Executive Vice President, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Pfizer Inc *Clarke and Ramscar provide a strong grounding on which to understand Britain’s security futures and also to understand the challenges that face Britain well beyond Brexit. Looking at both the national and the global as well as the historical and the emergent, this book is written for both the scholar and the lay reader to inform and suggest the challenges that Britain faces and what it takes to find vigor in the face of them. * Professor David Galbreath, University of Bath *Table of ContentsIntroduction Britain's Long-Term Challenges 1. Book Synopsis“We need more writers with bite. We have lived in the flatlands too long,” writes John Barnie in one of his ‘observations’ (‘Art in the Flatlands’). And bite he delivers. Ranging across politics, history, culture, ecological disaster, the meaning of truth, poetry, what we mean by identity and more… Barnie shares a window onto the world that is both erudite and particular. Leaning towards pessimism in a darkening world, these observations are often provocative, not from any bullish desire to antagonise, but as the result of mining a rationalist line of thought with an honesty and consistency that is applied as much to the author as to his subjects. There is a clarity here that some may find uncomfortable, but the aim is always dialogue above agreement; intellectual engagement above cheap solutions and sentimentality. Barnie asks us to think, consider and dig deeper, but most of all he asks that we “…live richly among our secondary self-created meanings, while recognising them for what they are. To face without flinching the nullity of the great void.” (‘Varieties of Meaning’) Tsunami Days is a vital collection of essays for those prepared to engage with its unflinching observations.

  • The Politics of Religious Tourism

CABI Publishing The Politics of Religious Tourism

Book SynopsisAddressing a dearth of literature in this area, this book provides a comprehensive overview and framework of study of the politics of religious tourism. Existing work shows awareness that politics is present but the approach has been one of benign neglect, and/or a priori assumptions about the role of politics in the management of sacred sites. Previous literature is fragmented into various perspectives and approaches that best serve different disciplinary interests. By understanding the politics of religious tourism through the various perspectives and approaches from the discipline of political science, law, public policy, and other fields, this book: Focuses on how power is exercised regarding religious tourism. Looks at the governing institutions of religious tourism including the role of relevant governmental bodies such as ministries of tourism or national tourism boards, ministries of religion and/or culture. Covers the role and influence of religious governing institutions, such as state-supported church/mosque officials, and universities. This book will be of great interest to researchers and students of religious tourism, pilgrimage, as well as related subjects such as political science, economics, sociology, tourism, law studies, and religious studies.

Boasting 1,250 hi-tech flats, a swimming pool, restaurant, gardens and shopping arcade, the complex quickly attracted a long list of the affluent and influential. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisA new progressive generation is on the rise in the United States, reflected in the mushrooming rolls of the Democratic Socialists of America (90,000 mostly twentysomething members), Marxist explainers in Teen Vogue, and perhaps most famously of all, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.The Rise of a New Left is the first book to look closely at this new politics. Propelled by interviews with AOC and the other key figures and organizations who have shaken up American politics, the book includes portraits of groups like the Democratic Socialists of America, the Sunrise Movement, and Justice Democrats, explaining who they are, where they come from, and what they want. Investigating the panoply of strategies employed by the new movements and their relationship to politicians from Bernie Sanders to Nancy Pelosi, the book describes how the generational focus on insurgent electoral campaigns both aims to transform the Democratic Party and threatens to be captured by it.Written with panache by a member of this rising generation, this book immerses the reader in a youth culture the likes of which hasn't been seen since the Sixties.Trade ReviewThe Rise of a New Left is an engrossing behind-the-scenes account of our decade's breakout political movement. It is also an invaluable second draft of history that readers and scholars will consult for many years to understand the opportunities and challenges of socialist organizing in the first decades of the 21st century. -- Atossa Araxia Abrahamian, author of The Cosmopolites: The Coming of the Global CitizenI was on the verge of getting sad about politics, again. Then I picked up The Rise of a New Left, I was reminded of all the energy on the young left, and I started feeling hope again. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisStalinism on Trial analyzes judicial politics in Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. It examines the relationship between the Spanish Republican government and its Soviet ally by way of a micro-history of the prosecution and trial of a communist (but anti-Stalinist) party, the Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista (POUM; Workers' Party of Marxist Unification). The state prosecuted the POUM for espionage, treason, and rebellion against the government, but convicted its leaders only of the third charge. The prosecution took place amidst repressions and show trials in the USSR. Jonathan Sherry challenges interpretations of Soviet involvement in Spain that attribute political repression to vacuous notions of Stalinism and the reputed all-powerful hand of Moscow. Interrogating the notion of the Moscow Trial in Spain he evaluates the political influences that shaped the prosecution using materials from various archives, especially the Fundación Juan Negrin. The Republic's prosecution of the POUM leadership should be understood within the context of a broader effort to reconstruct the Republic's penal institutions. Throughout the prosecution, Negrin's judiciary remained dedicated to a liberal conception of justice that attempted to preserve the individual rights of the defendants. In the struggle for control between Spanish Republican officials and Soviet-affiliated advisors, the former prevailed over the latter, with Negrin acting as a skilled mediator. The trial represented the finale of the contentious debate about what form justice should take in a nation in the throes of revolution and civil war. The judiciary rejected the contemporaneous Moscow trials in both form and content, and sought to reinforce the legitimacy of the Republican government internally and internationally. Rather than providing Soviet representatives an opportunity to extend their campaign against Trotskyism to Republican Spain, the prosecution constituted a sharp rebuke of Soviet politics. 3 in stock

Book SynopsisMichael Oakeshott (1901-90) made his reputation as a political philosopher, but for a long time it seemed as if he had little interest in politics before 1945. His major pre-war work, Experience and its Modes (1933) was an examination of the nature of philosophy and its relation to other forms of thought that made almost no mention of politics. However, it has become increasingly clear that this initial judgment was misleading. A posthumous collection of early essays, Religion, Politics, and the Moral Life (1993), proved that political philosophy was a lifelong concern. Nevertheless, the belief that Oakeshott was relatively uninterested in politics, at least in the 1920s, has persisted. This volume dispels that notion for good. It contains two previously unpublished works, a manuscript entitled ''A Discussion of some Matters preliminary to the Study of Political Philosophy'', and the first version of a course of lectures on ''The Philosophical Approach to Politics'' that Oakeshott gave between 1928 and 1930. These works establish that politics was a central concern in the first decade of his intellectual career, and show beyond any doubt that the ideas of Experience and its Modes actually grew out of Oakeshott''s prior philosophical interest in politics.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisR.H. Tawney is an iconic thinker in British left-wing circles, whose writings during the early-mid 20th century helped to forge the direction of democratic socialist thinking and Labour Party policies. This book provides a fresh and accessible guide to the ideas of Tawney for new readers and to set straight the record of what Tawney''s political thought really is, warts and all, in place of the rather over-simplified picture painted by the major commentators. It shows how Tawney's ideas changed over nearly 40 years of writing, as his own life experiences and the traumatic events of the two World Wars and their aftermaths drew him to a more secular and practical interpretation of politics. The book renders a service to scholarship, being based on original research, including examination of the Tawney Archive at the LSE, and makes use of unpublished works of Tawney.

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis Uncertainty about the future of the government and strong anti-political sentiment dominated Italian politics in 2007. Following a government crisis in February, rooted in the question of Italy’s role in Afghanistan, Prime Minister Romano Prodi was able to re-establish his coalition, but in the spring it suffered a clear setback in local elections amidst a climate of growing unpopularity. Initial chapters in this volume analyse these events as well as some important initiatives aimed, in different ways, at containing public disaffection towards the political class: the establishment of the Democratic Party, the electoral referendum campaign, and Silvio Berlusconi’s announcement of the birth of a new, center-right political party. As demonstrated in following chapters, the government did still manage to achieve a degree of success during the year in combating tax evasion and reducing the budget deficit as a result of increased tax revenue and more effective control of public expenditure. A number of redistributive goals were achieved in this way, as the volume’s examination of government social policy makes clear. Final chapters complete the picture of the state of Italian society in a year characterized by a fragile government facing a number challenging issues subject to veto: the liberalization program and the uncompleted introduction of fiscal federalism, the ever-challenging management of the national health system, the role of the Bank of Italy, the relationship with the Catholic Church and the legislation on de facto couples, crime and security.Table of Contents List of Abbreviations Chronology of Italian Political Events, 2007 Compiled by Rinaldo Vignati Introduction: Instability, Anti-politics, and Frustrated Aspirations for Change Mark Donovan and Paolo Onofri Chapter 1. C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd The Kurdish Question Revisited

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Kurds, once marginal in the study of the Middle East and secondary in its international relations, have moved to centre stage in recent years. In Turkey, where the Kurdish question is an issue of national significance, and in Iraq, where the gains made by the Kurdistan Regional Government have allowed it impose its authority, moves are afoot to solve 'the Kurdish Question' once and for all. In Syria, where the Kurds have borne the brunt of the Islamic State's onslaught as they defended their three self-declared cantons of Afrin, Kobane, and Cezire, and in Iran, where they struggle to express their cultural distinctive--ness and suffer disproportionately at the hands of the Islamic Republic's security and intelligence services, the pictures is less positive. Yet the situ--ations in both countries remain in flux, affected by developments in Iraq and Turkey in a manner that suggests we may have to revise the notion of the Kurds being forever divided by the bounda--ries of the Middle East's political geography and subsumed into the state projects of other nations. The contributors to The Kurdish Question Revisited offer insights into how this once seemingly intractable, immutable phenomenon is be--ing transformed amid the new political realities of the Middle East.Trade Review'A timely and wide-ranging work on aspects of Kurdish history, identity and culture, placed in the context of wider developments affecting the politics of the Middle East. C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Arab Political Thought: Past and Present

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book demonstrates the vitality of Arab political thought and its major controversies. It shows that the key players involved, far from being constrained by a theological-political straitjacket, have often demonstrated strong critical thinking when tackling religion and philosophy, anthropology and politics. Setting these thinkers and their works within two centuries of upheaval in the Arab world, Georges Corm demonstrates how Arab critical thought has been marginalised by powerful external forces: the military, the academy and the media. In its place has risen a hegemonic Islamist thought, used cannily by certain Arab regimes and their Western protectors. Closely tracing the successive transformations of modernist Arab nationalism, Arab Political Thought offers a blueprint for understanding the libertarian Arab Spring, as well as the counter-revolutions and external interventions that have followed. This invaluable guide comprehensively distills the complexity of Arab intellectualism. Any return to peace in the region will rely heavily upon recognition of the powerful dynamics underlying this school of thought, which is both critical and profane, and a far cry from the outdated politico-religious image it has acquired.Trade Review'Draws a comprehensive and detailed framework of Arab political thought... [Arab Political Thought] will help students of International Relations escape the 'Orientalist' trap that creates a stereotype regarding the shared wisdom of the Middle East.'

Welsh Academic Press Political Chameleon: In Search of George Thomas

Book SynopsisGeorge Thomas, the former Labour Cabinet Minister and Speaker of the House of Commons, was the sycophant supreme of the British political system and arguably the most divisive figure in twentieth-century Welsh politics, whose transformation from a radical young socialist to Viscount Tonypandy, a fervent supporter of Margaret Thatcher and servile courtier to the English Royal Family who was perfectly described by poet Nigel Jenkins as 'The Lord of Lickspit'. Drawing on previously unpublished material from Thomas' vast personal and political archive in the National Library of Wales, and interviews with many who knew him during his career, award-winning journalist Martin Shipton reveals the real George Thomas, the complex character behind the carefully crafted facade of the devout Christian and ultra British-loyalist, and discovers a number of surprising and shocking personae - which have previously been unknown, downplayed or overlooked - of this ultimate Political Chameleon whose political legacy now lies in ruins: The devious draft-dodger during World War Two. The Communist sympathiser controlled by the Soviet Union. The secret Freemason. The self-proclaimed teetotaller who enjoyed alcohol in private. The close acquaintance of a controversial financier. The spiritual sidekick of a Saudi Arabian oil minister. The duplicitous informer for Harold Wilson. The shameless betrayer of the people of Aberfan. The die-hard opponent of devolution with a spiteful antipathy towards the Welsh language. The unscrupulous fixer of Honours and master of patronage. The 'confirmed bachelor' and Methodist lay-preacher who sought the company of 'rent boys'. Martin Shipton also investigates fresh evidence relating to the explosive allegation that Thomas was a child rapist and a predatory sexual abuser of young males. This is the book that his dwindling number of supporters feared and the book his political opponents have been waiting for. Political Chameleon dissects George Thomas chapter by chapter, exposing him as a sanctimonious hypocrite whose religious veneer was a sham.Trade Review'George would have done anything to advance himself. University of Exeter Press Devon Women in Public and Professional Life,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHighly Commended for the W.G. Hoskins Prize in the Devon History Society Book of the Year awards. This book is one of the first to study the regional role of women in public and professional life, breaking new ground in early twentieth-century local and gender history. Covering politics (Eleanor Acland and Clara Daymond), medicine and education (Dr Mabel Ramsay and Jessie Headridge), and a variety of voluntary organizations (Florence Cecil, Georgiana Buller, Jane Clinton and Sylvia Calmady-Hamlyn), it shows how women worked individually and in collaboration to create new opportunities for women and girls in a large, mainly rural, county far from London and the industrial heartlands of England. These biographical studies are based on original research and reveal the huge public contribution made by these eight women, who up to now have been largely hidden from history. Devon Women in Public and Professional Life, 1900–1950 is a contribution to the history of women in Britain between the wars, a period that has received less attention than the Edwardian era and the two World Wars. It also fills a major gap in the history of Devon women, on which almost nothing has been published, and on Devon in the inter-war period, similarly neglected by historians. Book SynopsisThis book traces the re-emergence of nationalism in the media, popular culture and politics, and the normalization of far-right nativist ideologies and attitudes in Austria between 1995 and 2015, within the framework of Critical Discourse Studies. In doing so, it brings together a range of theoretical and empirical approaches to identity politics, contemporary popular culture, far-right populism and commemoration. While contradictory yet intertwined tendencies towards renationalization and transnationalization have often framed debates about European identities, the so-called refugee crisis of 2015 intensified and polarized these debates. The COVID-19 pandemic, as another major crisis, saw nation-states react by closing borders, while symbols of banal nationalism proliferated. The data under discussion here, drawn from a variety of empirical studies, suggest that changes in memory politics—the way past events are collectively remembered and tied into current political discourses—are also linked to the dynamics of migration; the influence of financial and climate crises; changing gender politics; and a new transnational European politics of the past. Accordingly, the authors assess current challenges to liberal democracies, as well as fundamental human and constitutional rights, in relation to new trends of renationalization across Europe and beyond.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction: Nationalisms old and new Ruth Wodak and Markus Rheindorf 1. Book Synopsis"[Kramer's body of work is] precise and sumptuous . . . a song of emotion, but with a great lucidity about the humanity of simple people."—Swiss Federal Office of Culture, Swiss Grand Prize for Literature citation"You need to read Pascale Kramer's books because they take you on a journey. You board a small ship that enters the human body, and what you felt while reading follows you for days after you've closed the book."—Elle (France)"Restrained, chiseled, implacable, the novels of Pascale Kramer perfectly master the art of creating a diffuse discomfort. Poignant."—Marie Claire (Switzerland)When a young woman returns to her childhood home after her estranged father's death, she begins to piece together the final years of his life. What changed him from a prominent left-wing journalist to a bitter racist who defended the murder of a defenseless African immigrant? Kramer exposes a country gripped by intolerance and violence to unearth the source of a family's fall from grace.Set in Paris and its suburbs, and inspired by the real-life scandal of a French author and intellectual, Autopsy of a Father blends sharp observations about familial dynamics with resonant political and philosophical questions, taking a scalpel to the racism and anti-immigrant sentiment spreading just beneath the skin of modern society.Pascale Kramer, recipient of the 2017 Swiss Grand Prize for Literature, is the author of fourteen books, including three novels published in English: The Living, The Child, and Autopsy of a Father, which was named a finalist for the La Closerie des Lilas, Ouest-France, and Orange du Livre prizes. Born in Geneva, she has worked in Los Angeles, and now lives in Paris, where she directs a documentary film festival about children's rights.Trade ReviewAdvance Praise for Autopsy of a Father Finalist for the La Closerie des Lilas, Ouest-France, and Orange du Livre Prizes “Restrained, chiseled, implacable, the novels of Pascale Kramer perfectly master the art of creating a diffuse discomfort. Book SynopsisNAUTILUS BOOK AWARD SILVER MEDALIST — SOCIAL CHANGE & SOCIAL JUSTICEWhen the election is over, the work is just beginning. The future of America depends on what you do after you vote. Today, women in the United States are more educated and politically ambitious than ever before. However, the record numbers of women running for office, casting votes, and marching for change haven't translated into full and equal political participation. Despite significant progress, women are less likely than men to engage in a range of important political activities—from speaking up on the issues they care about to holding their representatives accountable. Equal parts information and inspiration, After You Vote is both a primer and call-to-action for women of all ages who want to exercise their voices and engage more fully in civic life. It's the ultimate guide to political engagement, filled with practical (and proven) tactics to help women make their voices heard and have an influence on the issues they care about most. This book will help you: • Brush up on civics—federal, state, and local • Prioritize your issues • Use the most effective advocacy tactics • Stick with it for the long haul (politics is a marathon, not a sprint!) The question isn't if you can create change on behalf of the issues you care about. You can. The question is: What's at stake if you don't?Trade Review"After You Vote is an invaluable resource for women ready to create change. This smart, accessible guide arms you with the knowledge you need to make our political systems work for you—and the tools you need to fight for the causes you care about. Keep this book close as you take on the world!" —Emily Koh, director of strategic initiatives, TIME'S UP "After You Vote is a tremendous, well-timed, and highly accessible resource with proven and practical tools for women who are looking to use their minutes wisely to make the greatest impact, and it couldn't have come at a more critical time: women's political participation is more important now than ever." —Erin Loos Cutraro, CEO and founder, She Should Run "Courtney Emerson's new book, After You Vote, is a critical call to action empowering all women with the skills and resources to make an impact. Now, more than ever, we need women harnessing their full collective power to build a more inclusive and diverse political landscape." —Kathy Hochul, 77th Lt. Governor of New York and former Member of Congress "I know so many women who want to be more politically active but who hesitate, feeling lost or disillusioned with the current state of things. But, as After You Vote makes clear, the reality is that it's never been more important to get involved and fight for the causes you support. Let this brilliant book help you get started!" —Giovanna Gray Lockhart, founder, NYWCTable of ContentsContents Introduction: We All Have IssuesPart I: Let’s Get Civic-alChapter 1: Gender Gaps in American PoliticsChapter 2: Federal GovernmentChapter 3: State GovernmentChapter 4: Local GovernmentPart I WorkbookPart II: Tools for InfluenceChapter 5: Your Issues, Your VoiceChapter 6: Voting Chapter 7: Lobbying and AdvocacyChapter 8: Campaigning Chapter 9: Sustainable EngagementPart II Workbook Part III: Strengthening Our DemocracyChapter 10: Campaign Financing Chapter 11: Representative RepresentationChapter 12: Voter Access and ParticipationPart III WorkbookConclusion: A Call to Action Resources for ImpactEndnotesAcknowledgementsAbout the AuthorIndex

Book SynopsisIn the four years that passed after the Party''s leaders, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, fell away, ''the damaging cycle of rot and convulsion that Democrats seem unable to break out of'' continued to plague the party in the face of the rise of Trumpism, even after a historic midterm win. Never before had it had presidential candidates as disparate as Sanders, Biden, Buttigieg, Warren, and Bloomberg. Never before had the standard campaign playbook been thrown quite so far out the window, especially after the appearance of COVID in the winter of 2020. Behind Edward-Isaac Dovere''s fly-on-the-wall account of this period is a critical look at Democrats'' search for a message and an identity, the energy gathering for more progressive policies, shifting geographic and demographic voting trends, and the recalibration of what the party stands for.

For the next three weeks, the trucker convoy led a protest unlike any other, complete with bouncy castles, pig roasts, and late-night dance parties. But to the media and government, it was a hate-filled insurrection requiring the unprecedented invocation of the federal Emergencies Act.In this timely and provocative book, author Andrew Lawton combines his own on-the-ground reporting and countless hours of interviews with the Freedom Convoy''s organizers and volunteers to tell, for the first time, the whole story of the convoy.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis edited collection details and analyses the dramatic changes that the international political economy of energy has undergone in the past decade. This change began with the increasing assertiveness of Russia when the oil price rose above the $100 mark in 2008. This, combined with the rise of shale oil and gas, made the USA all but self-sufficient in terms of fossil fuels. The collapse of the oil price in 2014-15, Saudi Arabia’s new strategy of defending its market share and the increasingly tense and controversial relationship between the West and Russia all worked to further strengthen the geopolitical dimension of energy in Europe. The global result is a world in which geopolitics play a bigger part than ever before; the central question the authors of this volume grapple with is how the EU – and European small states – can deal with this.Chapter 4 of this book is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.comTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: The Changing (Geo)Politics of Energy in Europe.- Part I: Inside–Out: Projecting EU Rules and Ideas.- Chapter 2: Regulatory Power or Market Power Europe? Springer Nature Switzerland AG Theorizing Central Asian Politics: The State, Ideology and Power

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book brings together a series of innovative contributions which provide an eclectic view of how theorizing politics plays out in Central Asia. How are the concepts of governance, legitimacy, ideology, power, order, and the state framed in the region? How can we use the experiences of the Central Asian states to renovate political theorizing? In addressing these questions, the volume relies on the contributions of many young and local researchers, whose chapters are primed to address three key themes: exploring models of governance, revealing ideological justifications, and reframing state and order. Utilizing a range of single and comparative case studies from across the Central Asian space, this illuminating and original volume opens up a new space for political theorists, regional specialists and students of politics to begin reconsidering how we approach the theorization of regions of the world assumed to be on the periphery.Trade Review“Theorizing Central Asian Politics is a book that is destined to have a long shelf-life, due to its innovative approach that seeks to reframe theoretically the work of scholars with first-class knowledge of Central Asia, its languages, its politics and its societies.” (Luca Anceschi, Inner Asia, Vol. 21, 2019)“The editors aimed to plant a seed to discuss political theorization starting from practices in Central Asia, but they exceeded expectations. This book marks the development of new research trails that could be the roots of a reflourishing of general political theory.” (Gian Marco Moisé, Central Asian Survey, Vol. 38 (4), 2019)Table of ContentsTable of Contents Chapter 1. Book SynopsisThis book examines engagements with financial services in contexts of conflict. Using Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as case studies, it explores informal financial and business strategies and how these shift during conflict. Through a combination of regression analyses and panel data modeling with fixed effects, the project research indicates that conflict has a stronger effect on the nature of demand for credit and savings services than it has on the actual performance of financial institutions. In examining these patterns, the importance of networks and family becomes increasingly important—not just in the ways they are important to us as individuals, but as important determinants of post-war outcomes. The project focuses on intergovernmental structures of regional organizations as an institutional framework for a variety of independent processes in regions. It also challenges the perspective of democratic states as unitary actors and seeks to analyze the factors which favor or obstruct regional processes in different policy-fields. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis edited collection aims to analytically reconceptualise the Syrian crisis by examining how and why the country has moved from a stable to a war-torn society. It is written by scholars from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, all of whom make no attempt to speculate on the future trajectory of the conflict, but aim instead to examine the historical background that has laid the objective conditions for Syria’s descent to its current situation. Their work represents an attempt to dissect the multi-layered foundation of the Syrian conflict and to make understanding its complex inner workings accessible to a broader readership. The book is divided into four parts, each of which elaborates on the origins and dynamics of today’s crisis from the perspective of a different discipline. When put together, the four parts provide a holistic picture of Syria’s developmental trajectory from the early twentieth century through to the present day. Themes addressed include Syria’s postcolonial development efforts, its leap into socialism and then into neoliberalism in the late twentieth century, its politics within the resistance front, and finally its food and health security concerns.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: Syria in the Imperialist Cyclone.- Part I: A Historical Perspective of the Syrian Conflict.- Chapter 2: What Went Wrong: Understanding the Trajectory of Syria’s Conflict.- Chapter 3: The New Struggle for Syria and the Nature of the Syrian State.- Chapter 4: Syria: Strong State versus Social Cleavages.- Part II: Macroeconomy and Society.- Chapter 5: Macroeconomic Framework in Pre-Conflict Syria.- Chapter 6: The Syrian Conflict: Selective Socioeconomic Indicators.- Chapter 7: Lebanon Can’t Give Him a Future: Revolutionary Subjectivity and Syrian Rebel-Workers in Beirut.- Part III: The Politics of the Syrian conflict.- Chapter 8: Syria in the ‘Resistance Front’: Persistence through Reconfiguration?.- Part IV: Sectoral Analysis.- Chapter 9: The Political Economy of Public Health in Syria: Some Global and regional Considerations.- Chapter 10: The Political Economy of Thermidor in Syria: National and International Dimensions.- Chapter 11: Syria’s Food Security: From Self-Sufficiency to Hunger as a Weapon.- Chapter 12: Conclusion: China’s role in Syria’s National Security.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Foucault and Post-Financial Crises: Governmentality, Discipline and Resistance

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis title explains the causes of the financial crisis and the economic reforms that were created subsequently through a Foucauldian philosophical lens. The author sets out the approaches established by Foucault – namely governmentality, biopolitics and disciplinary mechanisms – explaining how these influenced the shift of production from a local to a global level, alongside a shift towards financialisation. Glenn applies Foucauldian principles to aid understanding of the self-corrective mechanisms applied to the financial system, and the interpellative processes that led to the emergence of a new mode of subjectification. Concurrently, this title examines the retreat of the state from the financial sphere. This shift, the author posits, did not mean the complete absence of governance; rather governance became more concerned with ensuring that financial behaviour was contained within certain limits.
