Silkworm Books / Trasvin Publications LP Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma's Struggle for
Book SynopsisBurma's pro-democracy movement emerged in 1988 when massive demonstrations swept across the country. This book gives an account of the movement, its emergence and growth, and Aung San Suu Kyi's prominent leadership role since its inception. Woven into this history is an outline of how Aung San Suu Kyi herself has become a highly respected pro-democracy icon internationally while being revered nationally as the "female Bodhisattva" who will deliver the Burmese people from the evil of the military regime. Lintner considers her strengths as well as her weaknesses, and traces her life not only in Burma, but also in India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Bhutan, and Japan. She was greatly inspired by her father, Aung San, Burma's independence hero who was assassinated when she was an infant, and also by Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Lintner analyzes the staying power of Burma's military regime and points out the obstacles to achieving what Aung San Suu Kyi is striving for: a free and democratic Burma.Trade Review"Bertil Lintner is an established authority on Burma . . . His succinct and insightful analysis focuses on post-1988 developments within the pro-democracy movement and the role of Aung San Suu Kyi, the NLD, and the '88 generation of student activists." -- Jeff Kingston * The Japan Times *"Lintner is a vetran reporter who has written several books on Burma. His expertise is widely acknowledged . . . While Suu Kyi still emerges as a remarkable, if somewhat test, saint . . . Litner's conclusion is pessimistic." -- Sholto Byrnes * The Independent *

Silkworm Books / Trasvin Publications LP Red Journeys: Inside the Thai Red-Shirt Movement
Book SynopsisRed Journeys is a firsthand account of the emergence and expansion of the red-shirt protests in Bangkok that took place in 2010. It traces the origins of the protest, focusing on the unique voices, stories, and motives of those who participated in the movement. Based upon hundreds of interviews and weeks spent alongside the red shirts in the middle of the protest, Sopranzetti vividly depicts daily life in the heart of the movement: its personalities, routines, rumors, and organization. As the peaceful occupation descended into violence and neared its tragic end, he describes the final moments of the protest when red shirts faced off with the Thai military. Styled engagingly between ethnography and daily blog, Red Journeys offers an unprecedented analysis of the biggest social movement in Thailand to date and highlights the discrepancies between the "official" media portrayal of the protest and the reality on the ground.Trade Review"He captures a sense of very ordinary people swept up into very extraordinary events for reasons that they can barely articulate beyond resentment at the society's deep unfairness . . . This is a brilliant little book - moving, eye-opening, unsettling." -- Chris Baker * Bangkok Post *

Silkworm Books / Trasvin Publications LP Armies and Societies in Southeast Asia
Book SynopsisWritten by a multinational team of experts who deploy their disciplinary strengths in history, sociology, social anthropology, political science, and philology to analyze a wide range of sources, including royal chronicles, missionary dictionaries, colonial archival documents, audio- and videotapes, and face-to-face interviews, Armies and Societies in Southeast Asia adds to the small but growing body of publications on warfare in Southeast Asia and colonial armies. This volume will be of interest to Southeast Asianists and military historians alike as it not only covers traditional territorial grounds, thematic terrains, and temporal landscapes but also extends to individuals and further includes the national, regional, and transnational lives of military institutions.

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Democracy, State, and Society – European
Book SynopsisIn the years after the breakthrough events of 1989, the concept of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) came to be widely used as a synonym for the group of ten countries from the former Eastern Bloc aspiring to EU membership. This book is an attempt to demonstrate and assess the changes resulting from the EU enlargements of 2004 and 2007 and European integration processes, identifying both the similarities and the differences in the countries of the region. This volume is addressed to those interested in Central and Eastern Europe. It has two main aims: first, to present the recent alterations in the region resulting from the processes of European integration; second, to offer an account of the process of Europeanisation in the countries occurring after accession to the EU that goes beyond just conditionality mechanisms. The collection also attempts to reflect on and contribute to the discussion on how the changes taking place in CEE influence theorisation on Europeanisation -- a concept initially constructed in order to tackle the changes taking place in response to the processes of European integration in the old member states. The book is divided into four parts, each concentrating on an area where the changes seem to be most profound and most interesting from the point of view of theorising on the impact of the European integration processes: democratic consolidation in the region, collective identity construction, functioning of civil society and studies on foreign policy and international relations.Trade ReviewAll of the eighteen texts, contained in, and creating the complete work, can be found as an interesting view on many aspects of political and social life of the newest members of the UE and also on their interactions with the international area. -- Dariusz Milczarek, Professor, the University of Warsaw

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Taiwan’s Exceptionalism
Book SynopsisTake a look at the political map of the world and you will see that almost every piece of land belongs to a state. This division – in contrast, for example, to the split created by a valley between two mountains – is man-made, imaginary, and arbitrary, and therefore can be easily questioned. Indeed, in addition to the multiple disputed borders that permeate the world map, some countries are not recognized or partially recognized. Other states decide whether a certain political unit can be recognized as sovereign. Again, even though their decision concerns imaginary divisions created by borders, accepting or rejecting them has far-reaching consequences in real life. The unrecognized country stays outside of a club of sovereign states, which makes cooperation with its members very difficult or even impossible. It has no choice but to invent novel ways to conduct external relations. Moreover, this specific international situation has a major impact on its politics, people’s lifestyles, culture, etc. This book is about just such an exceptional entity in the international community of states – Taiwan. It explains how the island’s specific international situation influences the developments in its external and internal affairs.Taiwan’s Exceptionalism shines the spotlight on two areas that are heavily influenced by Taipei’s unique status – its external and internal affairs. Additionally, each chapter of the book addresses the active role of Taiwanese society in shaping their international fate. First, it introduces the reader to Taiwan’s international legal status; next, it turns to the consequences of the island’s specific situation for international relations in the South China Sea, as well as in the US-China-Taiwan triangle. Having set the historical and political background for the following chapters, the volume draws attention to important phenomena in Taiwan’s internal affairs that are closely related to the status of the island. They examine Taiwan’s democratic development and challenges, civil society activism, indigenous tourism clusters, eco-tourism and the image of the island in Polish dailies. The authors believe that all of these facets are exceptional in the sense that they all bear the imprint of the island’s distinct international situation.Table of Contents1. Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Censorship of Literature in Post-War Poland: In
Book SynopsisCensorship of Literature in Post-War Poland in the Light of Confidential Bulletins for Censors from 1945 to 1956, reconstructs and presents ways to censor literature (and, contextually, other fields of art) submitted for evaluation to the main censorship office in Poland during the first 11 years after WWII. The source material consists of confidential Bulletins – periodicals addressed to the officials of the censorship office. The book is divided into three main parts, each preceded by an introduction and concluded with an extensive bibliography.Part One: In Search of a Definition: What Were the Confidential Bulletins for Censors? Characteristics of the Source Material presents basic information about the Bulletins – their goals, structure, and material presented in them. The analysis concludes with the definition of confidential Bulletins of the censorship office.Part Two: Literature and Current Literary Phenomena Preconstructs the image of literary life presented in the Bulletins from 1945 to 1956. On numerous occasions, the Bulletins provided helpful guidelines in censorship practice. They discussed the job of dealing with literary texts and often gave examples of works published just a few months earlier or those that had not passed the scrutiny. The Bulletins published materials discussing literary phenomena and other issues. The ones previously unaccounted for (including film, radio and theatre), as well as the institutional background of control, I discuss briefly in the last part – Camera Censorica. What Else was Discussed in the Bulletins?.The materials presented in these confidential periodicals came from the Bulletins headquarters, field offices, and the work of censors. At the end of my study, Author let the censors speak. In the chapter Before the Proper Summary, or the Censor as an Artist: The Literary Work of the Functionaries of Mysia Street and Its Environs, Author cite evidence of the literary ambitions of political functionaries – as censors had been called in the 1950s.

NIAS Press Red Hills: Migrants and the State in the
Book SynopsisSeveral million rural inhabitants of Vietnam's northern deltas made the decision to move home during the 20th century, seeking to make new homes in the country's highlands. Their decisions and the settlements they created had wide-ranging effects on their home communities and on the people and environment of their destinations. Many migrations were made in response to policy decisions made in Hanoi. The book offers a historical analysis of the political economy of migration, stimulated by the French colonial and independent socialist states. It shows how socialist policies especially changed the face of the highlands, as settlers from the plains turned the hills 'red'. Placing people's experiences in the context of government policy and national history, this book explores their anticipations, difficulties, achievements and disappointments, highlighting the geopolitical importance of the highlands. It can be read as a contribution to migration studies in Southeast Asia, but also as a grassroots history of 20th-century Vietnam. Written in a lively reading style and illustrated by numerous maps and photographs, this study promises to become a classic in Vietnamese historical studies.

Book SynopsisSze-yuen Chung is a veteran Hong Kong politician and an important figure in the development of Hong Kong over the past forty years. He has played a significant role in Hong Kong's political, economic, educational, and social development from its time as a British colony to its designation as a Special Administrative Region of China. Indeed, he is probably the only native son of Hong Kong who was closely and actively involved in the entire process of transferring Hong Kong's sovereignty back to China. These memoirs record Chung's personal experiences in Hong Kong's political scene in the two decades between 1979 and 1999 and his role in the Sino-British negotiations that led to the transition from British colonial rule to a position of autonomy under Chinese sovereignty.Chung's reflections — much of which are published here for the first time — are a valuable source of information on this important period in the history of Hong Kong. It will be of interest to all those who wish to know what actually happened during those pivotal years when the future course of Hong Kong was determined.

The Chinese University Press Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms
Book SynopsisThe period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (907 to 960 BCE) has long been treated as an anomaly in the history of China, an age of great disunity between the empires of the Tang and Song dynasties. Breaking with previous scholarship on China's middle period, this book presents individual studies that focus on the art, culture, and politics of the interregnum, challenging not only the underlying assumptions about the unitary nature of dynastic culture, but also its value as a category of historical analysis. Understanding these decades as a time of important transition, in which the incipient cultural shifts of the mature Tang dynasty turned into the foundations of Song society, this volume also highlights the complex narrative processes that gave birth to Song culture.

Book SynopsisBased on rare first-hand historical data, the author presents the analysis of the East Turkestan from the perspective of Islamic social structure, the origin and evolution of thoughts on national revolution, the internal structure of the independence movement and the power structure of the Republic, international relations, and international politics. Since it was first published in 1995, the original Japanese edition of this book has been recognized as the most authoritative research work on the independence movement of East Turkestan so far. The English edition of this book has been greatly revised and enriched to provide valuable references for the prominent issues of Xinjiang today.Trade Review“Understanding the complex involvement of powerful outside forces, a brutal world war, and an opportunity for groups that saw a chance at independence requires careful examination, and Professor Wang’s book does an admirable job in doing so. His exceptionally well-written book offers numerous insights, many based on materials that range from diaries and documents to memoirs and personal interviews. Altogether, Wang’s recently translated account strengthens our understanding of Xinjiang’s mid-20th century conundrum.” —Linda Benson, Professor Emerita, Oakland University“This research, now available in English, is an important addition to the growing library of work on modern Xinjiang and Uyghur history.” —James Millward, Professor, Georgetown University

Springer Verlag, Singapore Islam and Politics in Bangladesh: The Followers of Ummah
Book SynopsisThis book conceptualizes the politics of Bangladesh through an Islamic concept called ummah or the global brotherhood of Muslims. It demonstrates that, against the backdrop of geopolitics, capitalism and free flow of ideas, localization of this global religious concept at individual level, institutional level, major party platforms and state has cemented the current political condition in Bangladesh in which religiosity, religious intolerance, Islamization and extremism take place. By exploring the effects of ummah in Bangladeshi politics, this book shows how major political parties have mainstreamed political Islam in the country. The book rejects the long standing scholarly claim of religious-secular distinction in Bangladeshi politics and argues that with most Muslim-dominated states, there are no major secular parties in Bangladesh. There are only Islamic parties, which are more or less Islamic. The purely ‘rational’ domain of politics in Bangladesh is long lost, and political Islam sets the framework for politics in the country. The reason behind this logic of Bangladeshi politics is formed, contained and expanded by ummah. Table of Contents1. Introduction2. Providing a comprehensive overview of India–China relationship and the role of the USA in the context of India’s economic and security cooperation in the region, it argues that India–China relations are too complex to be defined through the binary of friendship and enmity, since it includes an element of cooperation, competition, coordination and as well as conflict and confrontation. The book also opens new avenues for research. Springer Verlag, Singapore Mainstreaming the Tribal Areas (ex-FATA) of
Book SynopsisThe book addresses why the Pakistani state is facing persistent challenges in extending and consolidating its governance (authority) throughout its territories, especially in the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (ex-FATA)? Even after the de jure merger, the question still remains valid that how Pakistani state could establish its governance in these tribal areas? Through multi-dimensional approaches and multi-pronged analysis of state-centric (top-down), society-centric (bottom-up) and state-in-society (mixed-horizontal) approaches, the book explains factors and dimensions that pose challenges to Pakistani state governance in ex-FATA. The main hypothesis is that societies, where state governance is absent, turn to informal governance and create informal institutions as a substitute for the weak central state governance thereby challenging the domination and control/authority of the state. The book presents policy recommendations for bringing these tribal areas into the mainstream governance system of Pakistan.Table of ContentsChapter 1: State Governance in the Ungoverned Territories of Developing States: The Conceptual Framework.- Chapter 2: Geography, Socio-economic and Political set up of FATA: An Overview.- Chapter 3: Challenges to State Governance in FATA: Society-centred Approach.- Chapter 4: Challenges to State Governance in FATA: ‘State-in-Society’ Approach.- Chapter 5: Challenges to State Governance in FATA: State-centred Approach.- Chapter 6: Extension of State Governance (Authority) in FATA: Prospects.- Chapter 7: Conclusion.- Index.
