Book SynopsisIf we see that our contemporary condition is one of war and widely diffused complexity, how do we understand our most basic ethical motivations? What might be the aims of our political activity?A War on Peopletakes up these questions and offers a glimpse of a possible alternative future in this ethnographically and theoretically rich examination of the activity of some unlikely political actors: users of heroin and crack cocaine, both active and former. The result is a groundbreaking book on how antidrug war political activity offers transformative processes that are termed worldbuilding and enacts nonnormative, open, and relationally inclusive alternatives to such key concepts as community, freedom, and care. Book SynopsisDoes anthropology have more to offer than just its texts? In this timely and remarkable book, Stuart Kirsch shows how anthropology canand why it shouldbecome more engaged with the problems of the world. Engaged Anthropology draws on the author's experiences working with indigenous peoples fighting for their environment, land rights, and political sovereignty. Including both short interventions and collaborations spanning decades, it recounts interactions with lawyers and courts, nongovernmental organizations, scientific experts, and transnational corporations. This unflinchingly honest account addresses the unexamined backstage of engaged anthropology. Coming at a time when some question the viability of the discipline, the message of this powerful and original work is especially welcome, as it not only promotes a new way of doing anthropology, but also compellingly articulates a new rationale for why anthropology matters. Trade Review"Engaged Anthropology is a compelling, thorough, and important contribution." * Collaborative Anthropologies *"Dense and detailed, and at times quite personal." * Anthropology Now *"This book is an essential resource for graduate programs, graduate students, and any scholar seeking meaningful ways to strengthen their ethnographic research." * Journal of Anthropological Research *"A sophisticated and passionate account of anthropology put into practice in a variety of political and social contexts. . . . required reading in undergraduate and graduate courses, and for scholars working on decolonisation, Indigenous rights, collaborative anthropology, extractive capitalism, climate change and sovereignty." * Anthropologica *"Engaged Anthropology successfully demonstrates the dynamic relationship between ethics, research, and political commitment." * Anthropology and Humanism *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations ix Acknowledgments xi Map of Cases xv Introduction 1 1 • How Political Commitments Influence Research 20 2 • When Contributions Are Elusive 50 3 • The Search for Alternative Outcomes 82 4 • When the Intervention Fails, Does the Research Still Matter? 107 5 • How Analysis of Local Contexts Can Have Global Significance 136 6 • The Risks of Intervention 165 7 • Dilemmas of an Expert Witness 180 Conclusion 223 Notes 231 References 249

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisA free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Multiculturalism as a distinct form of liberal-democratic governance gained widespread acceptance after World War II, but in recent years this consensus has been fractured. Multiculturalism in the British Commonwealth examines cultural diversity across the postwar Commonwealth, situating modern multiculturalism in its national, international, and historical contexts. Bringing together practitioners from across the humanities and social sciences to explore the legal, political, and philosophical issues involved, these essays address common questions: What is postwar multiculturalism? Why did it come about? How have social actors responded to it? In addition to chapters on Australia, Britain, Canada, and New Zealand, this volume also covers India, Malaysia, Nigeria, Singapore, and Trinidad, tracing the historical roots of contemporary dilemmas back to the intertwined legacies of imperialism and liberalism. In so doing it demonstrates that multiculturalism has implications that stretch far beyond its current formulations in public and academic discourse. Trade Review"The book is extremely ambitious, in terms of both perspectives and geographical scope – and it does well on each. I believe it will be very useful to scholars and students in the field, and can therefore recommend it wholeheartedly." * Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development *

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFilms for the Colonies examines the British Government's use of film across its vast Empire from the 1920s until widespread independence in the 1960s. Central to this work was the Colonial Film Unit, which produced, distributed, and, through its network of mobile cinemas, exhibited instructional and educational films throughout the British colonies. Using extensive archival research and rarely seen films, Films for the Colonies provides a new historical perspective on the last decades of the British Empire. It also offers a fresh exploration of British and global cinema, charting the emergence and endurance of new forms of cinema culture from Ghana to Jamaica, Malta to Malaysia. In highlighting the integral role of film in managing and maintaining a rapidly changing Empire, Tom Rice offers a compelling and far-reaching account of the media, propaganda, and the legacies of colonialism.Trade Review"Offers an astute political analysis of colonial film's development in Britain and makes an outstanding contribution to film history. . . . a wonderfully rich resource for anyone interested in the field, an education for those who are unfamiliar with the subject and a must for historians’ shelves." * Journal of British Cinema and Television *"[T]his volume provides a sophisticated perspective on the transformations of colonial cinema through the lens of the [Colonial Film Unit] as part of a shifting context for representation and sovereignty." * Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History *“With this book, Rice makes the case for the importance of film to the wind-down of the empire and to independence movements of the 1960s.” * CHOICE *"Like other works on British colonial filmmaking, the narrative of the CFU [Colonial Film Unit] in Films for the Colonies explains how the simultaneous construction of the metropole and the colony through moving images was an essential process of British colonialism. What is unique about Rice’s approach is his effort to centralise colonialism within broader histories of British cinema, particularly by emphasizing the CFU’s work in relation to that of the canonical filmmaking of the British documentary movement. As such, Films for the Colonies is essential reading for scholars interested in the visual history of colonialism and the global history of documentary and other ‘useful’ genres." * Reviews in History *"The first in-depth study of the British Colonial Film Unit (CFU), it provides a meticulously researched survey of a cinema corps that has been largely neglected by historians of British film. . . . Films for the Colonies provides a sturdy foundation for future studies of the CFU, one that scholars can build upon to shed further light on the unit’s rich, underexplored body of surviving films." * Journal of Visual Culture *"This book shows the depth of available material and the kinds of media histories that can be researched and written based on that material." * Journal of Religion & Film *"Films for the Colonies will prove essential reading for the growing community of scholars interested in the history of media in European colonies. . . . this is an attractively packaged, absorbingly written history of a fascinating subject. It will prove equally valuable to scholars interested in British film history, the global history of film, or the end of the Empire." * Journal of Cinema and Media Studies *"This essential book, while very aware of race, seems to navigate an internal complexity between making visible the colonized subjects and the colonial agents outside the frame, and a disquiet in articulating the very violence of the racial representations within." * Screen *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Accessing Digitized Materials Timeline Introduction 1. • The Fabrication of Labor Germany and Britain

University of California Press The Fabrication of Labor Germany and Britain

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis monumental study demonstrates the power of culture to define the meaning of labor. Drawing on massive archival evidence from Britain and Germany, as well as historical evidence from France and Italy, The Fabrication of Labor shows how the very nature of labor as a commodity differed fundamentally in different national contexts. A detailed comparative study of German and British wool textile mills reveals a basic difference in the way labor was understood, even though these industries developed in the same period, used similar machines, and competed in similar markets. These divergent definitions of the essential character of labor as a commodity influenced the entire industrial phenomenon, affecting experiences of industrial work, methods of remuneration, disciplinary techniques, forms of collective action, and even industrial architecture. Starting from a rigorous analysis of detailed archival materials, this study broadens out to analyze the contrasting developmental pathways to wage labor in Western Europe and offers a startling reinterpretation of theories of political economy put forward by Adam Smith and Karl Marx. In his brilliant cross-national study, Richard Biernacki profoundly reorients the analysis of how culture constitutes the very categories of economic life. • Exceptional America What Divides Americans from

University of California Press Exceptional America What Divides Americans from

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy did Donald Trump follow Barack Obama into the White House? Why is America so polarized? And how does American exceptionalism explain these social changes? In this provocative book, Mugambi Jouet describes why Americans are far more divided than other Westerners over basic issues, including wealth inequality, health care, climate change, evolution, gender roles, abortion, gay rights, sex, gun control, mass incarceration, the death penalty, torture, human rights, and war. Raised in Paris by a French mother and Kenyan father, Jouet then lived in the Bible Belt, Manhattan, and beyond. Drawing inspiration from Alexis de Tocqueville, he wields his multicultural sensibility to parse how the intense polarization of U.S. conservatives and liberals has become a key dimension of American exceptionalisman idea widely misunderstood as American superiority. While exceptionalism once was a source of strength, it may now spell decline, as unique features of U.S. history, politics, law, culture, religion, and race relations foster grave conflicts. They also shed light on the intriguing ideological evolution of American conservatism, which long predated Trumpism. Anti-intellectualism, conspiracy-mongering, a visceral suspicion of government, and Christian fundamentalism are far more common in America than the rest of the Western worldEurope, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Exceptional Americadissects the American soul, in all of its peculiar, clashing, and striking manifestations.Trade Review“A fresh contribution to the literature on US exceptionalism by exploring the divisions within US society over a range of key issues, including welfare, economic inequality, the justice system and foreign policy. Drawing on key facts and figures, Jouet presents an engaging analysis of the fundamental contradictions shaping the USA today. . . . Jouet’s book covers a wide range of subjects, including legal studies, political sociology/science, criminology, comparative studies, history and economics. This book will spark a renewed discussion about what makes America exceptional.” * London School of Economics Review of Books *"[Jouet] takes a long look at the notion of American exceptionalism in this thought-provoking new book. . . . he tackles his subject with a multicultural point of view, considering anti-intellectualism, fundamentalism, sex and gender roles and the politics of mass incarceration. The book takes the reader right up to the present; Jouet finished writing it just after the 2016 presidential election." * The Mercury News *“Exceptional America is the type of book with which you have to laugh in order not to cry.” * New York Journal of Books *"I found Jouet’s book to be engaging, easy-to-read, and thought provoking, and I found myself sharing many of the author’s intriguing statistics and findings out loud with my peers as I was reading. More importantly, though, Jouet unveils the forces driving political polarization and the kind of uniquely American beliefs that led to election of President Trump. He helps explain many far right stances that cosmopolitan liberals may otherwise dismiss as bigoted or uninformed." * Ameri Quests *"Exceptional America, deftly analyzing a host of peculiar features characterizing American society, should be read both by Americans wishing to reflect on the causes of their country’s profound polarization and by non-Americans seeking to better understand a nation that, despite its pervasive cultural influence, at times appears strange and unfathomable." * Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books *Table of ContentsPreface Introduction 1 • One Nation, Divisible 2 • From the American Enlightenment to Anti-Intellectualism 3 • Th e Exceptional Influence of Christian Fundamentalism 4 • Th e Culture Wars of Faith, Sex, and Gender 5 • Between Democracy and Plutocracy 6 • Millions Standing against Their Own Economic Interest 7 • Mass Incarceration, Executions, and Gun Violence in “the Land of the Free” 8 • America and the World Conclusion Acknowledgments Notes Index

  • There Is No More Haiti

University of California Press There Is No More Haiti

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is not just another book about crisis in Haiti. This book is about what it feels like to live and die with a crisis that never seems to end. It is about the experience of living amid the ruins of ecological devastation, economic collapse, political upheaval, violence, and humanitarian disaster. It is about how catastrophic events and political and economic forces shape the most intimate aspects of everyday life. In this gripping account, anthropologist Greg Beckett offers a stunning ethnographic portrait of ordinary people struggling to survive in Port-au-Prince in the twenty-first century. Drawing on over a decade of research, There Is No More Haiti builds on stories of death and rebirth to powerfully reframe the narrative of a country in crisis. It is essential reading for anyone interested in Haiti today. Trade Review“Beckett’s deep and thoughtful ethnography effectively demonstrates that disorder is not the absence of order, but is a structured confluence of scripts and externalities that are profoundly felt by people in Haiti.” * LSE Review of Books *“While the author seeds his book with historical context, his strong narrative style emphasizes individual people... who work in the informal economy and with whom he becomes fast friends while meticulously studying their lives.” * Diplomat & International Canada *"In There is No More Haiti: Life and Death in Port-au-Prince, Greg Beckett combines a decade of ethnographic research with a novelist’s sensitivity to style to create a deeply empathetic and theoretically expansive portrait of urban life in Haiti between 2002 and 2006. . . . Overall, the book is a remarkable contribution to Haitian studies, presented with such accessible and beautiful prose that it is suitable both for experts and undergraduates." * H-Net *"At once poignant and urgent, There is No More Haiti develops a slow and intensively empathic ethnography that unfolds . . . through, and despite, a furiously rapid, chaotic historical moment marked by multiple crises." * New West Indian Guide * "There Is No More Haiti is an essential book for thinking about Haiti today." * Religious Studies Review *Table of ContentsList of Photographs Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Book SynopsisWater for All chronicles how Bolivians democratized water access, focusing on the Cochabamba region, which is known for acute water scarcity and explosive water protests. Sarah T. Hines examines conflict and compromises over water from the 1870s to the 2010s, showing how communities of water users increased supply and extended distribution through collective labor and social struggle. Analyzing a wide variety of sources, from agrarian reform case records to oral history interviews, Hines investigates how water dispossession in the late nineteenth century and reclaimed water access in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries prompted, shaped, and strengthened popular and indigenous social movements. The struggle for democratic control over water culminated in the successful 2000 Water War, a decisive turning point for Bolivian politics. This story offers lessons for contemporary resource management and grassroots movements about how humans can build equitable, democratic, and sustainablTrade Review"Water for All beautifully illustrates the relevance and the power of history as a discipline. Book SynopsisCrimes in Archival Form explores the many ways in which human rights facts are produced rather than found. Using Myanmar as his case study, Ken MacLean examines the fact-finding practices of a human rights group, two cross-border humanitarian agencies, an international law clinic, and a global NGO-led campaign. Foregrounding fact-finding, in critical yet constructive ways, prompts long overdue conversations about the possibilities and limits of human rights documentation as a mode of truth-seeking. Such conversations are particularly urgent in an era when the perpetrators of large-scale human rights violations exploit misinformation, weaponize disinformation, and employ outright falsehoods, including deepfakes, to undermine the credibility of those who document abuses and demand accountability in the court of public opinion and in courts of law. MacLean compels practitioners and scholars alike to be more transparent about how human rights fact production works, why it is important, and when its use should prompt concern.Table of ContentsContents Acknowledgments and Dedication List of Abbreviations Notes on Terminology Introduction 1. Book SynopsisDepartures supports, contextualizes, and advances the field of critical refugee studies by providing a capacious account of its genealogy, methods, and key concepts as well as its premises, priorities, and possibilities. The book outlines the field's main tenets, questions, and concerns and offers new approaches that integrate theoretical rigor and policy considerations with refugees' rich and complicated lived worlds. It also provides examples of how to link communities, movements, networks, artists, and academic institutions and forge new and humane reciprocal paradigms, dialogues, visuals, and technologies that replace and reverse the dehumanization of refugees that occurs within imperialist gazes and frames, sensational stories, savior narratives, big data, colorful mapping, and spectator scholarship. This resource and guide is for all readers invested in addressing the concerns, perspectives, knowledge production, and global imaginings of refugees.Trade Review"Departures works best as a critical manifesto ‘by and for refugees.’ Bold and provocative, it will not fail to spark conversations in the coming years." * Review of International American Studies *"Departures illuminates us in a brave and stimulating way on many layers and levels. Book SynopsisAs news spread that more women died from breast and cervical cancer in India than anywhere else in the world in the early twenty-first century, global public health planners accelerated efforts to prevent, screen, and treat these reproductive cancers in low-income Indian communities.Cancer and the Kali Yugareveals that women who are the targets of these interventions in Tamil Nadu, South India, hold views about cancer causality, late diagnosis, and challenges to accessing treatment that differ from the public health discourse. Cecilia Coale Van Hollen's critical feminist ethnography centers and amplifies the voices of Dalit Tamil women who situate cancer within the nexus of their class, caste, and gender positions. Dalit women's narratives about their experiences with cancer present a powerful and poignant critique of the sociocultural and political-economic conditions that marginalize them and jeopardize their health and well-being in twenty-first-century India.Trade Review"An exemplary ethnography. . . . Book SynopsisAs Hong Kong is integrated into the People's Republic of China, ever fewer people in the city identify as Chinese. Two Systems, Two Countries explains why. Two Systems, Two Countries traces the origins of Hong Kong nationalism and introduces readers to its main schools of thought: city-state theory, self-determination, independence, and returnism. The idea of Hong Kong independence, Kevin Carrico shows, is more than just a provocation testing Beijing's red lines: it represents a collective awakening to the failure of One Country Two Systems and the need to transcend obsolete orthodoxies. With a conclusion that examines Hong Kong nationalism's influence on the 2019 protest movement, Two Systems, Two Countries is an engaging and accessible introduction to the tumultuous shifts in Hong Kong politics and identity over the past decade.Trade Review"Carrico’s goal is to provide 'an introduction to the main schools of Hong Kong nationalism, giving readers the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of independence activists and recognize their intellectual contribution to the study of the politics of Hong Kong and China'. • China Coup

University of California Press China Coup

Book SynopsisAn expert's take on how a coup in China could launch a transition to democracy. This short book predictscontrary to the prevailing consensusthat China's leader Xi Jinping will very soon be removed from office in a coup d'état mounted by rivals in the top leadership. The leaders of the coup will then end China's one-party dictatorship and launch a transition to democracy and the rule of law. Long-time diplomat and development banker Roger Garside draws on his deep knowledge of Chinese politics and economics first to develop a detailed scenario of how these events may unfold, and thenin the main body of the bookto explain why.Hisgripping, persuasive account of how Chinese leaders plot and plan away from the public eye is unique in published literature. Garside argues that under Xi's overconfident leadership, China is on a collision course with an America that is newly awakened out of complacency. As Xi's rivals look abroad, they are alarmed that he is blind to the reactions that ChinaTrade Review"I just finished reading China Coup and loved it. . . . By posing a provocative ‘what if,’ Mr. Garside expands the terms of our debate on China." * CHINADebate *"A compelling read and a convincing one. At the very least, if Canadians are worried about growing Chinese Communist influence in the free world, they can find in this book a key to unlock a twenty-first-century riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma." * Literary Review of Canada *"I decided to treat China Coup as a kind of Orwellian-but-with-a-happy-ending foray into speculative fiction. I knew I would need to take Garside’s claims with a grain of salt, as he would focus as intently on finding cracks in seemingly smooth facades as CCP propagandists, who create ‘semi-fictional’ texts of their own, strive to present those surfaces as flawless." -- Jeffrey Wasserstrom * Mekong Review *"The credentials of the author are burnished by a lifetime of close scrutiny of the People’s Republic, so in a field of many self-proclaimed experts, but fewer genuine authorities, Garside demands attention." * The Tablet *"Garside has had an illustrious career in the financial sector and as a diplomat, including two stints at the British embassy in Beijing. In China Coup he applies his extensive experience to map out a plausible scenario for Xi’s ouster. . . . Garside’s book serves as a timely reminder that there are deep divisions within the CCP, that many of Xi’s policies are vastly unpopular, and that he has powerful enemies among the party’s top leaders. Most importantly, Garside reminds us that the outcome of the 2022 party congress is not a done deal." * The Strategist *"Thought-provoking but not fanciful." * CHOICE *Table of ContentsPreface 1 · The Coup 1 The Coup 2 · Why a Coup? 2 Totalitarian China: Outwardly Strong, Inwardly Weak 3 The Looming Economic Crisis 4 No Trust, No Truth 5 Who Rules: God or the Party? 6 An Environmental Catastrophe 7 Coronavirus: Cover-up and Costs 8 America and the Fate of Xi 9 The Great Unfinished Business 3 · After the Coup, a Revolution 10 Launching the Revolution Afterword: One Life, Two Questions Acknowledgments Notes Select Bibliography Index

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Public Choice

Book SynopsisThe 1968 Nobel Prize for Economics was awarded to one of the founders of public choice theory, James Buchanan, yet many people have only the vaguest idea what public choice is. The book offers and unusually clear and accessible introduction to an important subject. McLean examines the workings of public choice from two related perspectives - collective action and the aggregation of individual preferences into social consensus. The book highlights the paradox at the heart of collective action- that self-interest in the public domain is frequently counterproductive. National defense and clean air are things we all benefit from - they are public goods - but we tend to resist contributing to them. The first part of this book examines how government choice in such areas is shaped, and by whom- political entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, interest groups and ordinary citizens. McLean uses the idea of a public market in which politicians sell what they hope voters will buy, and further considers

  • Individualism and Public Life

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Individualism and Public Life

Book SynopsisIn the spirit of recent works such as Habits of the Heart and The Closing of the American Mind, Ralph Ketcham''s Individualism and Public Life asks whether the individualism which has made possible so many of the material advances we enjoy may also be the cause of the shortcomings troubling our society today. By tracing the development of individualism from its origins in classical and Judeo-Christian traditions, and enlisting the insights of East Asian cultures, Ketcham re-evaluates the individualism which characterizes contemporary American society. He then poses a new politics of the public interest, including revised ideas of citizenship, leadership, and decision-making in a grand attempt to reconcile the individualism of American liberalism with a healthy conception of public life.
