  • The American Counter-Revolution in Favor of

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The American Counter-Revolution in Favor of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents the case that the origins of American liberty should not be sought in the constitutional-reformist feats of its “statesmen” during the 1780s, but rather in the political and social resistance to their efforts. There were two revolutions occurring in the late 18th century America: the modern European revolution “in favour of government,” pursuing national unity, “energetic” government and centralization of power (what scholars usually dub “American founding”); and a conservative, reactionary counter-revolution “in favour of liberty,” defending local rights and liberal individualism against the encroaching political authority. This is a book about this liberal counter-revolution and its ideological, political and cultural sources and central protagonists. The central analytical argument of the book is that America before the Revolution was a stateless, spontaneous political order that evolved culturally, politically and economically in isolation from the modern European trends of state-building and centralization of power. The book argues, then, that a better model for understanding America is a “decoupled modernization” hypothesis, in which social modernity is divested from the politics of modern state and tied with the pre-modern social institutions.Table of Contents1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG The End of the Democratic State: Nicos Poulantzas, a Marxism for the 21st Century

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis edited volume takes a close look at Nicos Poulantzas’s thought as a means of understanding the dynamics of the capitalist, neoliberal state in the 21st century. Nicos Poulantzas has left us with one of the most sophisticated theories of the state in the second half of the 20th century. Poulantzas’s influential theory draws inspiration from Marx, Lenin, Weber, and Foucault, among other thinkers, conceiving of the relationship between capitalism and the state as particularly original. This book aims to use Poulantzas’s theory of the capitalist state in order to understand important political and economic trends that have taken place since Poulantzas’s death in 1979. By entering into a dialogue with current Marxist and critical research in diverse fields such as political science, philosophy, sociology, history, and geography, this volume purports to evaluate the actuality of Poulantzas’s thought.Table of ContentsPreface: The End of the Democratic State Jean-Numa Ducange and Razmig Keucheyan Part I. • Crisis and Ontological Insecurity: Serbia’s

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Crisis and Ontological Insecurity: Serbia’s

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book develops a novel way of thinking about crises in world politics. By building on ontological security theory, this work conceptualises critical situations as radical disjunctions that challenge the ability of collective agents to ‘go on’. These ontological crises bring into the realm of discursive consciousness four fundamental questions related to existence, finitude, relations and autobiography. In times of crisis, collective agents such as states are particularly attached to their ontic spaces, or spatial extensions of the self that cause collective identities to appear more firm and continuous. These theoretical arguments are illustrated in a case study looking at Serbia’s anxiety over the secession of Kosovo. The author argues that Serbia’s seemingly irrational and self-harming policy vis-à-vis Kosovo can be understood as a form of ontological self-help. It is a rational pursuit of biographical continuity and a healthy sense of self in the face of an ontological crisis triggered by the secession of a province that has been constructed as the ontic space of the Serbian nation since the late 19th century. Trade Review“This book is essential reading for social scientists with a particular interest in Kosovo and Southeastern Europe, as well as for political scientists in international relations. It is also crucial for policy-makers … . Ejdus presents valuable insights into the Serbian politics of avoidance … . It is to be hoped that the book will also inspire international policy-makers to reflect more consciously upon their own politics of avoidance when it comes to the status of Kosovo.” (Pieter Troch, Comparative Southeast European Studies, Vol. 69 (2-3), 2021)Table of Contents1. • The Decline of Public Access and Neo-Liberal Media Regimes

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Decline of Public Access and Neo-Liberal Media Regimes

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the reasons behind the declining fortunes of public access channels. Public access, which provided perhaps the boldest experiment in popular media democracy, is in steep decline. While some have argued it is technologically outmoded, Caterino argues that the real reason lies with the rise of a neo-liberal media regime. This regime creates a climate in which we can understand these changes. This book considers the role of neo-liberalism in transforming notions of public obligations and regulation of media that have impacted non-profit media, specifically public access. Neo-liberalism has tried to eliminate public forums and public discourse and weakens institutions of civil society. Though social media is often championed as an arena of communicative freedom, Caterino argues that neo-liberalism has created a colonized social media environment that severely limits popular democracy. Table of Contents1. Public Access in Decline.- 2. The Frankfurt School and its Aftermath.- 3. Public Interest Standards from Radio to Public Television.- 4. The Emergence of Public Access Television.- 5. Neo-liberalism the Public Sphere and the Decline of Public Obligation.- 6. Access Under Attack: Some Examples.- 7. Book SynopsisFar from displaying a uniform pattern, European integration varies significantly across policy areas and individual countries. Why do some member states choose to opt out of specific EU policies? Why are some policies deeply integrated whereas others remain intergovernmental? In this updated second edition, the authors introduce the most important theoretical approaches to European integration and apply these to the trajectories of key EU policy areas. Arguing that no single theory offers a completely convincing explanation of integration and differentiation in the EU, this thought-provoking book provides a new synthesis of integration theory and an original way of thinking about what the EU is and how it works.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- The European Union as a System of Differentiated Integration.- PART I: THEORY Intergovernmentalism.- Supranationalism.- Constructivism.- PART II: POLICIES The Single Market.- Economic and Monetary Union.- Security and Defence.- The Area of Freedom, Security, and Justice.- Conclusions: Integration and differentiation in the European Union.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents a Marx that is in many ways different from the one popularized by the dominant currents of twentieth-century Marxism. The dual aim of this edited volume is to contribute to a new critical discussion of some of the classical themes of Marx’s thought and to develop a deeper analysis of certain questions to which relatively little attention has been paid until recently.Contributions of globally renowned scholars, from nine countries and multiple academic disciplines, offer diverse and innovative perspectives on Marx’s points of view about ecology, migration, gender, the capitalist mode of production, the labour movement, globalization, social relations, and the contours of a possible socialist alternative. The result is a collection that will prove indispensable for all specialists in the field and which suggests that Marx’s analyses are arguably resonating even more strongly today than they did in his own time.Table of Contents1. • From Broke To Brexit: Britain’s Lost Decade

Springer Nature Switzerland AG From Broke To Brexit: Britain’s Lost Decade

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPerhaps the most extraordinary period in modern British history, the years between the Great Recession and Brexit have often been dubbed ‘the lost decade’ because of the economic and political turmoil caused by those two great events. Michael Burton outlines how the first led to the second, assisted by a rare confluence of other, often unrelated, social and political factors that delivered the shock Leave verdict in the EU referendum of 2016. These included the longstanding grievances of voters in former industrial areas feeling left behind by globalism, stagnant incomes after the recession, austerity, the rise of social media, the refugee and Eurozone crisis in Europe, the deep split in the Conservative and Labour parties over the EU and rising wealth inequalities. The author also charts the chaotic political landscape that ended in the final Brexit deal. This book is ideal for the general reader as well as for students of politics, history and economics needing a concise and well-explained account of this turbulent period in British history.Table of ContentsIntroductionThis will briefly outline the book, explaining as above why the decade was so momentous and why the recession, austerity economics and Brexit are all linked.Chapter one: Britain in the depths of the Great RecessionThis chapter sets the scene in 2009/2010 outlining the undercurrent tensions in British society even before the recession such as income inequalities, generational divides, immigration, regional disparities, globalism, which were later to become starkly apparent during the next decade.Chapter two: austerity BritainThis chapter looks at the Cameron government’s austerity policies and considers their impact and whether they were necessary. Chapter three: the great dividesThe recession exposed great divisions within UK society, between prosperous London and the poorer outlying regions, between wealthy homeowners in London and young people struggling to get on the property ladder in the capital, between the baby boomers and Generation X. The Cameron government initiated ‘the Northern Powerhouse’ to drive growth to poorer regions but it was in the secondary cities, the Rotherhams, Barnsleys and Blackburns where local economies were weakest and where welfare cuts as part of austerity as a result had the greatest impact.Chapter four: the rise of the far rightThis chapter looks at attitudes to the EU within the UK and at the rise of immigration as a political issue following the big influx of EU workers in the mid to late 2000s. It then examines the rise of UKIP and how, in response to its polling success, David Cameron responded with his fateful decision to hold a referendum on the EU which led to Brexit.Chapter five: interregnum: Olympic UKThis chapter looks at a year, 2012, which appeared to tell the world that the UK was a cosmopolitan, multi-racial, open-minded society, in contrast to the message sent out by the referendum result four years later. The chapter covers the London Olympics, the sense of optimism which it briefly generated and the impact on the public mood, symbolized by internationalist London Mayor Boris Johnson. Chapter six: the disruptersThis chapter looks at one of the features of the lost decade, the rise of social media which disrupted established media providers and led to the rise of ‘fake news’ when it came to election coverage and public perceptions of controversial political issues. Politicians on the fringes were able to bypass traditional media and appeal directly to the public without the intervening firewall of informed commentary. The EU referendum campaign would ultimately be won through social media.Chapter seven: foreign quarrelsThis chapter looks at how international issues impacted on the UK, primarily from the rise of Isis in the Middle East and its attraction for some young Muslim males in the UK, the fall of Gadaffi in Libya, and the Syrian civil war and consequent refugee crisis. These all contributed to a rise of xenophobia reflected in growing support for UKIP. By the time of the EU referendum refugees from the Middle East and Africa, asylum seekers, homegrown Islamic terrorists and EU working immigrants were all conflated by unscrupulous politicians into a single threat that would boost the Leave vote.Chapter eight: Cameron makes historyThis chapter covers the 2015 general election and examines the impact of the recession on the public and on the public finances and at the socio-economic challenges Cameron now faced. It also covers the 2014 Scottish referendum which should have been a wake-up call to the possibility that a EU referendum could end in Leave.Chapter nine: headlong into BrexitThis chapter looks at the eventful year following the 2015 election. It covers the referendum campaign and the poll itself, Cameron’s resignation, the election of Theresa May, Corbyn’s own post-referendum troubles with his Shadow Cabinet and the start of the Brexit process. In particular it considers the reasons why the country – to the shock of the political class – voted Leave and examines the socio-economic profile of the Remainers and Leavers that exposed the deep divide in the country. Chapter ten: capitalism in crisisThis chapter looks at the disastrous general election campaign which saw May lose her majority and Corbyn emerge as the unlikely hero of Labour, cementing its leftwards march. Political commentators attributed much of his electoral success to young voters, furious about the Brexit result and at the government’s austerity. In a sign of post-referendum confusion, the middle classes tended to vote Labour while working class voters – mainly Leavers – backed the Conservatives. The elections also saw the disappearance of UKIP.Chapter eleven: party loyalties under pressureThis chapter looks at the negotiations for a Brexit deal during 2018 and early 2019 and the way Brexit broke traditional party loyalties among Labour and Conservatives. This chapter will cover the negotiations up to when (or if) the UK leaves the EU.Conclusion:This summarises the key undercurrents of the decade and sees Brexit and its impact on the UK body politic as the expression of underlying socio-economic changes in Britain.

  • Towards Economic Inclusion in the Western Balkans

Springer International Publishing AG Towards Economic Inclusion in the Western Balkans

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe countries in the Western Balkans have been severely affected by the wars and conflicts that led to the breakup of former Yugoslavia, by political instability and the effort of creating new states, weak economies and high levels of unemployment, poverty and social exclusion, and inequality. As revealed by recent surveys, such as EBRD’s Life in Transition Survey and Eurofound’s European Quality of Life Survey, life satisfaction in the region is far below that elsewhere in Europe. In recent years they had achieved a strong impetus of economic growth with falling rates of unemployment and increasing optimism for the future. However, the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has brought about a sudden reversal of these trends and a renewed deterioration in the economic outlook, and an increase in social hardships that heralds a repeat of past failures in economic inclusion policies. This book identifies the key challenges in the areas of economic inclusion, focusing on the themes of labour markets, vocational education and skills, female entrepreneurship and the integration of migrants. It considers the opportunities for solutions to “build back better” once the recovery from the COVID-19 crisis begins, and offers proposals for more acceptable, equitable and effective economic inclusion policies.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: Key Challenges for Economic Inclusion in the Western BalkansPart I: Labour Market InclusionChapter 2: A Low-Wage, High-Tax Trap in the Western BalkansChapter 3: Envelope Wages in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Incidence and Distributional ImplicationsChapter 4: Horizontal Job-Education Mismatch in Kosovo: Is There a Gender Gap?Chapter 5: Cross-national Comparison of Job Types: Analysis Using the EU LFS and Albanian LFSPart II: Vocational Training and SkillsChapter 6: The Professional Training Programme in Montenegro: An Active Labour Market Policy or a Way to Fill the Structural Gap?Chapter 7: The Quality of Vocational Training and the Position of the Individual in the Labour market in SerbiaChapter 8: The Apprenticeship System in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Myth or Reality?Part III: Female EntrepreneurshipChapter 9: Case Study on Female Entrepreneurship in Bosnia and HerzegovinaChapter 10: Female Entrepreneurship in Albania: Financial Incentives and DisincentivesChapter 11: Economic Inclusion of Women Entrepreneurs During Covid-19 in Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and HerzegovinaPart IV: Integrating Returning MigrantsChapter 12: The Relationship between Migration and Pensions Policy: The Case of AlbaniaChapter 13: The Role of Voluntary Return Migration in Supporting Economic Development in Albania Chapter 14: Immigrant Entrepreneurship and Resilience during the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Case of Croatia Part V: ConclusionsChapter 15: Towards an Inclusive Model of Development in the Western Balkans

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn incisive examination of the intersection of global art and political resistance.NO Rhetoric(s) examines a subject intensely debated during the last three decades but rarely a topic of its own: art as an agent of resistance, whether as a rhetorical stance or critical strategy. In the face of today’s discourse on revolt and insurrection, it is necessary to ask whether the gesture of “negation” still has an emancipatory potential. NO Rhetoric(s) contributes a deeper understanding of the different logics of resistance at play between art and politics. Showcasing a diverse array of voices, this volume presents contributions on topics as varied as sexual dissidence, ecology, and geopolitics in the digital age. Through this interdisciplinary show of force, the collected authors, artists, and scholars shed light on how art approaches the most urgent issues facing today’s society.

Book SynopsisThis book, part of the new wave of political sociology in EU studies, examines the dialectics of construction/deconstruction of the European civil service through a succession of empirically grounded case studies. Breaking with the usual representations of ‘Eurocrats’, it sheds light on a hidden aspect of the current European crisis: a crisis of social reproduction which affects the European civil service in a heavy context of management reforms, enlargements, institutional changes and the euro crisis. This in turn has a number of consequences in terms of internal tensions, power, and more broadly, the capacity of EU institutions to create convergence between diverging national and economic interests, and to embody a European future.European Civil Service in (Times of) Crisis will be of interest to students and scholars across a wide range of disciplines, including politics, sociology and public administration, to practitioners working in and with the EU institutions, as well as those wishing to know more about the EU. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Palgrave Policy Essential maps and assesses key changes in the Whitehall model over the last two decades. It argues that the traditional Whitehall model is being replaced by a system of ‘New Political Governance’ (NPG) centred on politicised campaigning; the growth of political advisory staff relative to the permanent civil service; the personalisation of bureaucratic appointments; and the creation of a government machine that is ‘promiscuously partisan’. It provides a snapshot of the institutional changes that are unfolding at a critical moment, as Whitehall prepares to support Ministers in carrying out the Brexit process while addressing a series of long-term structural challenges from the demographic pressures of the ageing society to the impact of climate change. Austerity since 2010 has had a further transformative effect on Whitehall, with drastic reductions in the civil service workforce, the restructuring of government agencies, and a reconfiguration of the traditional roles and responsibilities of the permanent civil service.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: Government by ‘Permanent Campaign’Chapter 3: The Growth of Political Advisory StaffChapter 4: The Personalisation of AppointmentsChapter 5: A ‘Promiscuously Partisan’ BureaucracyChapter 6: Conclusion

Book SynopsisIn 1952, politicians from Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg formed the first Ad Hoc Assembly with the aim of drafting a constitution for a future European Political Community. Rediscovering this previously neglected origin of parliamentary Europe, Kari Palonen investigates the significance of the Ad Hoc Assembly for the politicization of European integration. He delves into how the assembly functioned as a project of European integration after the Second World War, interpreting it as a moment in the political theory and conceptual history of parliamentarism that opens new perspectives on the later stages of the parliamentarization of the EU.

Book SynopsisThroughout India''s long and chequered history, Hindus, Muslims, and other communities have consistently adapted while preserving their shared identity. India has long stood as a sanctuary for its diverse minorities, allowing them to nurture their faith and culture. However, contemporary India faces a profound distrust between its major communities. Centuries of mutual suspicion have given rise to new terms like ''persecution complex,'' ''self-denial,'' and ''victimhood.'' Even more disconcerting are phrases such as ''holocaust,'' ''massacre,'' ''pogrom,'' and ''genocide.'' The need for dialogue is undeniable, but the ground reality tells a different story. This book also casts a spotlight on the role of left-liberals in perpetuating this divide. Polarised Times is an essential exploration of the pressing issues that demand our attention, urging us to rekindle the bonds of unity and diversity, for India''s future stands at a crossroads.

Institutions of governance that weathered great turbulence in the past are now disintegrating. The economy, once the celebrated ''India story'', is in a shambles. Large sections of the media genuflect to the ruling dispensation. Meanwhile, the grand old party of India remains trapped in its glorious yesterday and unsure about its future. In 2014, named after the year the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance first came to power under Narendra Modi, Sanjay Jha takes a long, hard look at what all of this means for India. What are the reasons for the Congress''s acute lack of Oppositional ability? Can the party look beyond the easy fallback of the Gandhi-family charisma and embrace transformational change? Book SynopsisWhy do young men and women from the West join an extremist organization like ISIS? Why are we seeing the rise of aggressive right-wing politics in countries such as India, Turkey and USA, the expansion of Islamist terror, massacres in Western metropolises, wars in the Middle East? And in what way is the politics of anger and violence connected? In this outstanding book, Pankaj Mishra argues that the roots of our age of anger lie in the great economic and political revolutions of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in Europe and the traumatic social and political changes they brought. Boldly argued and with a canvas that stretches from Savarkar in India to Rousseau in France, Age of Anger is a must-read to understand the world today

Book SynopsisThis book offers a concise and yet diverse study on the Chengzhongcun. It has a broader scope, both geographical and temporal, than existing works on this topic. The typical Chinese urban informal settlement is related to morphologically similar communities to be found elsewhere in the world. The chapters’ themes were inspired by the methods in historical geography, citizenship studies, and new cultural geography. What is truly unique to this book is that ten years after the basis material of this book was defended, it is enriched with practical experience and first-hand observations of the rapidly changing Chinese city. As urbanization in China slows, this book will interest sociologists, urbanists and scholars of China.Trade Review“For historians, geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, architects, political scientists, urban planners and art historians who share the same interest in urban studies, including global and local urban history, urban planning and governance, urban artistic practices, and urban tourism, this book may offer scholastic inspiration, bring inter-disciplinary dialogue, and point the way for future research in this field.” (Fanghao Chen, Urban Studies, Vol. 60 (5), 2023)Table of Contents1. • The History of the Republic of Turkey: Grandeur

Academic Studies Press The History of the Republic of Turkey: Grandeur

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisA comprehensive, readable history of the Republic of Turkey that gives equal weight to all periods in the first century of the Republic of Turkey. The republican order of Turkey seems not to have changed much since its foundation in 1923, but there were dramatic transformations: From Atatürk’s modernization dictatorship in the 1920s and 1930s, over the massive migration into the cities and the military coups in the second half of the twentieth century, up to Recep Tayyip Erdoğans electoral autocracy since the 2010s. This book makes us understand Turkey’s historical trajectory in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the fate of its various communities and ethnic groups—in particular Alevis and Kurds—and argues that a particular trait of Turkish political culture is its constant fluctuation between confidence and contention, grandeur and grievance.Trade Review“Maurus Reinkowski’s The History of Turkey: Grandeur and Grievance offers a critical retelling of Turkey’s triumphs and tragedies, providing an empathic exploration of the country’s past over a century. This expertly crafted work illuminates the country’s moments of grandeur and delves into its deep-seated grievances. Through an engagement with state-of-the-art research, Reinkowski’s keen eye for detail allows him to paint a vivid picture of Turkey’s complex history, surpassing standard textbooks. In a time of political crisis, Reinkowski’s engaging yet sober book offers a much-needed update to the perhaps overly optimistic scholarship of the last two decades. Impeccably researched and eloquently written, The History of Turkey: Grandeur and Grievance is an indispensable resource for scholars, students, and anyone seeking a critical understanding of Turkey’s past, present, and future.” — Alp Yenen, Assistant Professor of Modern Turkish History and Culture, Leiden University“In his thought-provoking introductory chapter, Maurus Reinkowski aptly observes that Turkey is a country that evokes anything but indifference. This rings acutely true in 2023, as Turkey not only faces presidential elections but also gears up to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic. The History of Turkey provides an invaluable companion to unlock the historical context of these events. Covering a period from 1912 to the present, the book offers a nuanced, meticulously researched and vividly narrated historical overview. It serves as a comprehensive and widely accessible guide to Turkish history and historiography that also features insightful discussions of Turkey’s most recent decades. By skillfully embedding key developments within their broader historical and cultural contexts, the rich narrative invites readers to explore the complexity and diversity of Turkish history and allows them to recognize enduring legacies and reverberations of the processes depicted in the book.”— Barbara Henning, professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Ottoman and Turkish History“This work is the culmination of some forty years of diligent language practice, intensive research, meticulous observation, and genuine engagement with the societies of Turkey. The result is a profound piece of scholarship with pages full of intellectually sophisticated analyses and magisterial detail that provide a new interpretation of the land, state, and people. Well-grounded in a wide range of old and new scholarship, it is a highly accessible account of Turkey from both a comparative and global perspective. This book will eloquently but at the same time disturbingly and constantly remind readers how firmly the genesis of state ideology is built on the foundations of the late Ottoman and early Republican period. It is essential reading for introductory and advanced courses on Turkey and the Middle East, and for those who look for a concise, yet authoritative account of the region in order to understand the state, politics, and society in depth. There is no equivalent study of this quality for Turkey; Reinkowski deserves considerable praise for a work that should receive much attention.”— Metin Atmaca, Professor of Ottoman and Middle East History, Social Sciences University of Ankara"This work of Maurus Reinkowski is an indispensable tool for those aiming to have a profound knowledge on present-day Turkish politics, or to understand this complex society. Having been trained in late Ottoman history and Middle East politics, Reinkowski is a keen observer of political and social developments in contemporary Turkey, also known officially as Türkiye. This study is chronologically organized, beginning with the historical roots of modern Turkey, followed by the Kemalist Republic (1923-1950), the period of 1950-1980, and recent Turkish history. What makes this book so appealing is its concentration on contemporary Turkish developments following the military coup of 1980. It discusses structural conditions leading to a crucial break from Kemalism, commenced with the so-called ‘Turkish-Islamic Synthesis’ ideology of the 1980s, continued by the economic liberalism of Turgut Özal, finally leading to the AKP-era presidential system accompanied by populism and authoritarianism. Reinkowski handles numerous topics, which still bear the quality of actuality, in a precise, informative and balanced manner."— Selçuk Akşin Somel, Sabancı University, Istanbul“This mature work combines affection for the subject with detached insight; serious questioning with a positive approach. Drawing on the current state of research, Reinkowski appreciates Turkey's potential and grievances, but also highlights the dead ends of its ultranationalism. Reading his insightful narrative reveals a central challenge: how to build up trust and democratic confidence in the dynamic, but troubled post-Ottoman country that is Republican Turkey? This work differs from many traditional books on modern Turkey that overemphasize Atatürk, while ignoring the late-Ottoman context and new developments of the twenty-first century.”— Hans-Lukas Kieser, Historian, University of Newcastle, Australia, and University of Zurich, SwitzerlandTable of ContentsPrefaceIntroduction Farewell to the Ottoman Empire The Kemalist Republic, 1923–1950 Precarious Pluralism, 1950–1980 The Promise of Islamic Conservatism, 1980–2013 The Road to Another Republic, 2013–the Present Update on Turkey in the Years 2021–2023 AcknowledgementsTimelineAbbreviationsIndex

Book SynopsisA pathbreaking book about world history, global justice, colonialism, and the climate. This new paperback edition features a new foreword by the author. Coursing with moral urgency and propelled by brilliant prose, this is more than argument. It's how we build the power needed to win.Naomi KleinA clear, new case for reparations as a constructive, future-oriented project that responds to the weight of history's injustices with the equitable distribution of benefits and burdens. Centuries ago, Táíwò explains, European powers engineered the systems through which advantages and disadvantages still flow. Colonialism and transatlantic slavery forged schemes of injustice on an unprecedented scale, a world order he calls global racial empire. The project of justice must meet the same scope. Táíwò's analysis not only discourages despair, it demands global resistance. Reconsidering Reparations suggests policies, goals, and organizing strategies. And it leaves readers with clear and powerful advice: act like an ancestor. Do what we can to shape the world we want our moral descendants to inherit, and have faith that they will continue the long struggle for justice. This understanding, Táíwò shows, has deep roots in the thought of Black political thinkers such as James Baldwin, Martin Luther King, Jr., Cedric Robinson, and Nkechi Taifa. Reconsidering Reparations is a book with profound implications for our views of justice, racism, the legacies of slavery and colonialism, and climate change policy.

That is at the heart of epidemiology, and it's what MacKenzie does beautifully in her book. Whether it's cultural practices with animals like bats, or the fear and delay in labeling it pandemic, to a woeful lack of funding for public health and vaccine research, or the misguided notion that disease will recognize boundaries just because people do-MacKenzie's fascinating book gives us the scope and scale to be able to put this pandemic in perspective and, it begs the question, will we learn from this in time to prevent to next one -- Molly Crosby, author of THE AMERICAN PLAGUE, ASLEEP and THE GREAT PEARL HEISTSome people write interesting autobiographical recollections of people, places, and events, while others offer an extensive and comprehensive anthology of a topic area.
